THE TIMES THURSDAY DECEMBER 31 1942
GERMANS DRIVEN BEYOND KOTELNIKOVO
FALLING BACK ALONG THE RAILWAY
THREAT BY SOVIET LEFT WING
FIERCE ENEMY RESISTANCE AT MILLEROVO
The Red Army is pressing the Germans along the railway from the Kotelnikovo area towards the river Sal and Zimovniki, 50 miles farther on, where the enemy’s chances of making a long stand are doubtful.
The Russian left wing, having outflanked the Kotelnikovo battlefield, has captured several places and may constitute a serious threat to the retreating enemy. On the other side of the railway the Russians have progressed to the region of Tsimlyanskaya, on the lower Don.
Millerovo is being hard pressed, and the Germans report that they have reinforced their armies there with reserves of fresh troops.
MURDER PLOT IN ALGIERS
TWELVE ARRESTS
THREAT TO GIRAUD AND U.S. MINISTER
General Giraud stated yesterday at Algiers that 12 persons have been arrested in connexion with the Darlan assassination.
The plotters also intended to kill General Giraud and Mr. Murphy, the American Minister in North Africa.
Among those arrested are two persons closely connected with the help given to American landings in Algiers. No names are to be published, General Giraud stated that this was entirely a French affair. – [italics] British United Press. [/italics]
