My dear Mum,
Received your air mail letter this morning just after my final signals exam, this I am glad to say completed them, and I know you will be pleased to know that I passed them all, so the road is clear now, so am now looking forward to graduation day next Thursday. I wish you could be here to see it but I know you will be thinking about me. To date I don’t know what we shall be doing after, perhaps I will get word next week, in any case I will cable you. I am very sorry the mail has been pretty scarce the last week or so – but now that I have achieved my aim I will have more time for writing. As far as I know I shall be returning to Moncton a few days after graduation, if this is so I shall spend the week-end at Mrs. Ashton and stop en-route at Montreal for a day before continuing on, then I expect I will be at Moncton for about three weeks before we are shipped home, so unless I get a job out here, it won’t be long before I am back in England. I have a few more snaps for you, so I will drop them in an envelope and post it the same time as this. Closing now all the best to Dennis & Bill.
Yours lovingly

My dear Mum,
Many thanks for your two letters received a week ago sorry not to have written sooner but have been very busy – exams etc. next week will see me through, then we have our flight party on Monday 27th followed up by Wings Parade on the 30th so have just two weeks to go, the time you receive this I should be just about through. Regarding stopping over here – this depends on the vacancies and whether they require R.A.F. instructors so as far as I can see, I shall be on my way home sometime in October. The exams are going well up to now – have another two tomorrow besides a final medical examination, have still two more night flights before my time is to date, at present it is over the 100 mark. Am still having some grand week-ends at Mrs. Ashtons and her meals are simply marvellous – the address is as follows:- 66 COLLIER ST., TORONTO, ONTARIO. Dennis was asking about Gina – well we still write to each other – the girls out here is just a mere friendship. No I haven’t heard anything from morriss [sic] since my last letter to them, but you know what these funds are. Thank Dennis for his two airgraphs received last Friday will write to him soon. Closing now all my best to Bill

My dear Mum,
Received your air mail letter of the 18th a few days ago, I don’t know why it is but they have been flying the feet off us, even though we have our total time in for the course, Monday we went up in the afternoon and again in the evening, so I was just dead beat the time we finished 1-30 am. We heard the final photography results this morning and we all passed so thats [sic] one off the list, we have another exam on Monday so I am just preparing for this. Well time is simply flying past am in the final month now, graduating on the 30th so I am looking forward to this day. I will do my best and see what I can get for Evelyn, ask Bill to enquire at the bank whether he can cable me a travellers cheque, I think you are allowed to send this, it would give me a larger scope in bringing a few requirements home. My knee is completely healed now, and am still having marvellous times at the girl friends, I hope you have received the snaps by now – I already mentioned that I received yours also my camera – thanks – Well must close now so hope to hear from you again soon. Regards to Dennis & Bill. To Evelyn xxxx Love. Reg xxxx

My dear Mum,
Received your air mail letter this morning after spending another marvellous week-end at my friends, it was more of a rest cure, for I have also been in the wars. I scratched my knee on the bunk last Tuesday, and although I attended to it, by Thursday it resulted in blood poisoning, so I reported sick and spent the next two days with a poultice on it, so by the week end [inserted] it [/inserted] was cleared up. We had our first long trip last week, to a station in Quebec and spending the night there, returned early next morning. My flying is practically complete now another few flights and my time will be in for the course. We start our final exams this Wednesday, so things are nearing the end. Yes Mum, I did receive your photos in the last letter I received. I expect mine will just about have reached you, by now. I hope you like them. My camera has come in very handy, its so compact, although I am also finding it difficult to get films I don’t think I shall need anything on my return, although you could suggest a few items for my party that are unobtainable at home, but I could get here. Well thats [sic] about all for now. All my best to Dennis and Bill, All my love to you

My dear Mum,
Just a few lines before I go to flight preparation for tonights [sic] trip, the first since last Friday so it has been a restful four days. I spent another marvellous week-end at Mrs. Ashtons, she certainly looks after me. My 14th week exams commence next week so am being kept quite busy all this week reviewing past work and then my finals starts with photography on the 15th week, so my goal is gradually being reached. I was very pleased yesterday when my instructor asked me for my log and chart for the previous nights trip, he said it had to be sent to ‘Command’, as it was the best in the class, I gained 84 percent that night, and the next trip 85 percent so I have been doing quite well lately. I received my camera today, together with an airgraph from Dennis, so am all fixed up now to take some decent shots, especially air-views. It took just under a month to get here, just as I expected, so that was quite good. It was also a change to read the old Daily Mirror and Pictorial again, compared with the papers here, sheets and sheets mostly advertisements. Well things are much the same since my last airgraph, a few thunderstorms, then scorching again, too changeable for my liking. All my best to Dennis and Bill. To Evelyn xxxx Love. Reg xxxxx

My dear Mum,
Received your air mail letter August Monday, no holiday for us, did manage to sleep in to 10 am, but this was due to us, for we had been flying til [sic] 2 am. I have now 60 navigating hours to my credit so I am well over half way in my flying total. It has been raining for the last two days so this has served as a break, although we have been on synthetics each night instead. I sent a few snaps on to you last week by ordinary mail so you should get them shortly after this. Have another 48 hour pass this week-end, so will make the best of it, before I commence my 14th exams, the following week. From now on there will be exams every week until I graduate, that is, on an average two subjects each week, this giving us sufficient time to swot in between each. Will write to Dennis and Bill as soon as I can, I hope you are all well and not working too hard through the holiday, for what I have been going through here I shall certainly need one when I come home. I must have a word with my instructor regarding the prospects of the work after the course, for want to get in something good. Will let you know the result later. Closing now

Dear Mum,
Just a few lines before I go up again, was flying all morning and am detailed for my first night flight, this is where my navigation will tell. We have certainly been putting the hours in, seven flights in four days, just beginning to feel fatigued so I hope it will slacken off within the next few days. We start our mid-term exams on Wednesday, these will last over a period of two weeks, so my evenings will be spent in the classroom from now on. I received Bills letter last Friday, so will write very shortly, I haven’t heard from you lately so I am hoping it is on its way. We were expecting four days leave after the exams, but this has now been cancelled, instead we are to be given a 48 hr. pass every other week, I shall of course spend this at my friends, for I am very welcomed there Well, Mum, I am practically half way through the course, and the rest of the time will pass very quickly, then I shall be home in no time, so Cheerio for now, will write as spoon as I can shortly. Regards to Dennis & Bill
All my love

My dear Mum,
Just looking at the date, and on the 6th I shall have been in the RAF. a year – does it seem like it? I was very pleased at the exam results, having come top in Navigation, 95 percent, also in Instruments, Maps, Magnetism 98 percent, and Signals 100 percent, quite a good percentage, hoping I can keep this up. My practical navigation, that is when flying is also good, according to the way I am marked on landing, so up to now everything is tops. We have been kept pretty well busy lately, all this week-end flying, it started to rain this afternoon so have had this opportunity to write to you and also a few other letters that have been outstanding. This is the first week-end that I have missed at my girl-friends and did I miss their Sunday dinner. I will try and send a few more snaps soon, do you think I have changed according to the others. And how are you all at home, plenty of hot weather, Evelyn still enjoying her sweets, will send some more soon. Well theres [sic] is not much more to say, only I am thinking of you all hoping to hear from you again soon,
Love. Reg xxxxx

My dear Mum,
Thanks for your letter 3rd June received last Saturday and am so glad Evelyn liked the parcels. I have been extremely busy lately, at present am in the midst of my 6th week exams, and will be delving into Meteology [sic] as soon as I finish this. Things are really moving now, another 4 weeks will be our mid-term exams and then exams practically every week after until I graduate – the finals commencing on the 14th week, so you must excuse me if I am a little late in answering your mail. Thank Dennis for his letters, I will write to him as soon as I can. By the way Bill was enquiring about a jacket so when you write, let me know his measurement across the shoulders. You needn’t worry about the cost of the things I send you. – You can save it up for me when I come home. Continuing 27th. Received your letter 14th, coming all the way without a stamp – yes I am spending most of my week-ends at the girl friends and appreciate their hospitality. Do you think it is worth it to send me my camera, as the one I have now is only a box one, very cumbersome. Heard the results of the exam today and I passed in every subject an average of 80 percent in each, so I hope to do as well in the others to come. Well mum, must close now, hoping you are all well and having good weather, it has been up to 90 degrees out here. All my love Reg xxxx

My dear Mum,
Sorry not to have written sooner but I have been extremely busy the last week or so, flying etc., yesterday 7 1/2 hours, came back dog tired, tomorrow we will be at it again so you see I have hardly a minute to spare especially with the other ground subjects. Its a good job I have somewhere pleasant to go to at the week-ends to relieve the monotony. I shall be going to my friends next week for my 48 hour pass, they are very nice people and we have a grand time together. Its been simply scorching the last week or so, this makes you dead-beat, how is it at home? Oh! by the way when Dennis writes a letter, could you let me have a snap of all of you, do you realize I haven’t got one at all. I hope you have received my snaps by now, I sent a few others last week, I expect this airgraph will arrive first though. I heard from my friend in Oxford that the works were allotting me a £1 a month from the Service Fund that has been just formed, it will be sent to you, this will help pay for my party when I come home. Well I must close now, for have my flight plan to prepare. So Goodnight for now and love

My dear Mum,
Received your letter from Glasgow this morning and am so glad you are having a good time, even with Evelyn to look after, it is a change. How did Dennis get on with the housework? I expect he had most meals out. Is the rationing still severe? I spent my week end in Toronto at my girl friends, well in with the family. It is a change from the camp, to get some lovely home-cooked meals – had my first strawberries yesterday. I am still working away on this course, how the exercises mount up. We have been up on another flight last week and have a further one tomorrow, this is where I start in earnest, handing the Pilot the course to steer, etc and the estimated time we shall arrive at each destination, so I am looking forward to this. It has been simply scorching the last few days, we were issued with summer outfits Friday but even with these I simply melt. I was flying in my shirt sleeves and even so it was still sweltering, whats [sic] it going to be like next month? Well, Mum there is not much to relate, only that I am having a swell time here such a lovely place in the summer, but would rather be at home with you all, so Cheerio for now and all my love to you
Yours Reg xxx

My dear Mum,
I must thank you for the two airgraphs I received from you Thursday and another one addressed to this station Friday, this taking a fortnight to arrive, so this wasn’t so bad. Are you receiving mine alright now? You needn’t worry about me now, I am terribly excited about this job, we started flying again Friday. I was at the Navigators table plotting and map reading, just in my line, of course it may not be so easy as time progresses, but with plenty of hard work, I shall make it. I expect by now you have been to Glasgow and back so I hope you had an enjoyable time. I have been writing to Nan as often as possible, it is very difficult to find the time now, so much homework to attend to. By the way you are planning my celebrations too early, although it is very sweet of you, it will be soon enough when you hear that I am coming home. I graduate October 1st. You have too much to do, than worry about this. I shall plan something in the meantime. I managed to get myself a good watch and struck lucky last week in getting a ‘Ronson’ lighter so I am all set now. Well things are much the same this end, I spent my 48-hour leave in Toronto this week-end and had a grand time. Next Sunday I have been invited out to dinner so this will be a nice change. Closing now all my love,
Yours Reg xxxx

My dear Mum,
Many thanks for your air letter, 14th and airgraph 27th April which I received yesterday, and I must say I am now receiving a constant flow of mail, which is very appreciable. I shall be here for the next 20 weeks so there should be no hold ups. The course will be complete by the end of October and I hope with success to be home by December, so keep your fingers crossed. This is quite a good station, plenty of hard work, but we have most week-ends off and a 48 hour pass every month so I shall see most of this country before I return. Toronto is a very nice city on Lake Ontario, last night I went to the Pleasure Beach, just like Blackpool used to be, coloured lights, the Big Dipper etc., we had a grand time. I hope by now you have managed to get that well earned holiday at Glasgow, I bet its nothing like peace-time. Thats [sic] one good point over here, no signs of a war at all, of course they have started rationing one or two items but nothing compared with you at home. The weather is started to get really warm, at present we are out on the lawn, me trying to concentrate, with Jack Benny on the wireless, we get good programmes out here. Dennis would like it plenty of swing bands, by the way thank him for his letter which I also received yesterday. Closing now, my regards to Dennis & Bill
All my love Reg xxxx

My dear Mum,
I expect you will be wondering when am I going to write but I hope the following will explain the delay. Firstly last week-end we were issued with a 48 hour pass from Friday night until Monday morning. This was the opportunity I had been waiting for, so quickly packing a few essential things I was bound for New York with my two pals. After travelling all night we arrived at Pennsylvania Station at 8.30 am Saturday. The next thing was, we reported to the Maple Leaf Club on 5th Ave. and before we could do anything we had an invitation for lunch at the Waldorf-Astoria, New York’s finest hotel, next tickets for a show, then two dances lasting until 3 am. What a day? [sic] and a scorcher too. We crawled back to our hotel The Chesterfield, dead beat. Sunday commenced with a tour of the Empire State Building, followed up by another show, what a riot, jitterbugging in the aisles, and finally a tea-dance at the Biltmore Hotel, from here we caught our train back to Montreal.

[underlined] PART. 2 [/underlined]
On reporting back to our station – Lachine we were posted to Air Observer School and so once again we were off packing etc., and managed to get away by Wednesday afternoon. I hope you received my cable which I sent Tuesday night. We arrived at Toronto about 9 pm and as we had a few days leave until Sunday we decided to tour the States. Thursday saw us in Niagara Falls. Buffalo, Erie, and Cleveland. Friday we arrived at Detroit and spent a grand evening with a Yank instructor. Saturday we were bound for Malton, via Windsor, London, Hamilton and Toronto, so ended the most hectic week I have ever experienced. Malton is about 15 miles outside Toronto which is quite handy to get in for a week-end, but from all accounts I shall have my hands full, flying until midnight, late classes til [sic] 11 pm, both these twice weekly and then of course private studies which is most essential for I intend to pass this course. Closing now, thanks for birthday cards which I received today. Regards to Den & Bill.

8/6/42.
Dear Grandma & Grandpa,
Many thanks for your card and letter which arrived on the 6th.
I am enjoying myself out here and the Rockies did look good with the sun and mist on them. I was very pleased to hear about Pat’s successes. They cheered me up and made me myself again. I’m sorry to here [sic] Grandpa isn’t too good on his old “props”. The heat and standing here aren’t too good on our feet. I had a fortnights leave a bit back and wished I was home and I could have gone to see Mrs. Baker for a day or two.
I wish you’d go and cheer Ma, Pa, Pat and June, up a bit when you go out for a run they are a bit like me “Down in the Dumps” still I should make an Observer, if not a Navigator or Bombadeir [sic].
Love & kisses,
Keith.

[underlined] 24 MARCH ’98 [/underlined]
[underlined] EMPIRE AIR TRAINING SCHEME [/underlined]
[underlined] 24 FEB ‘1942 [/underlined] We left HEATON PARK, MANCHESTER with it’s snow turning to slush at 3 AM. Our kit bags marked with the code FAUNA C SPRAT loaded with us, the train pulled out at 5 AM After [deleted] seral [/deleted] several stops, including CARLISLE we arrived at 330 PM at GOUROCK, SCOTLAND where we climbed aboard the S.S. ORBITA a 15,000 TON – CANADIAN PACIFIC LINE ship (she’d carried troops in 1914 – 18 and was scrapped sometime in the 60’s)
[underlined] 25 FEB ’42 [/underlined] moved out into the river about 6 PM and sailed at 10 PM.
We had drawn hammocks but there were not enough hooks for all – we slept on the mess deck – so unless you slung your hammock early you ended up on the floor or table!
Being FEBRUARY and the N. ATLANTIC the sea was a bit rough, most of the time The fire buckets [underlined] we [/underlined] had to empty frequently and refill with fresh WATER!!! Despite this I do remember sitting on an empty Biffo box on the stern to look at the moon and it’s [sic] reflection on the sea and to watch the phosphorescent glow of the wake as we pitched & rolled.
Being bored with nothing to do I volunteered to BAT for some RCAF aircrew returning home
On our last day the wind and sea “got up” and we slowed to about 2 KNOTS with the [indecipherable word] being lifted right out of
[page break]
4 PM. landed 630 PM. Train overnight to MONCTON. N.B. arriving 2 AM.
We were warned to beware the COLD – children were ice skating on the pavements, most houses had a small rink, a banking of snow filled with water, in their back garden. A parade ground on camp had been made into a large rink.
[underlined] 11 MARCH 1942, [/underlined] two days later, we left, by train at 1030 PM. with two blankets & our kit bags to sleep with & on, a bare wooden drop-four bunks on HARD unpadded slats.
A half hour stop at WINNIPEG brightened up 14 MARCH at 4 PM – coffee, “cookies”, “cigs and candy bars were given [inserted] to us [/inserted] by the town. A RCAF band played dance music while we danced with local “talent” on the station platform
Another night we ground to a jolting halt – an axle box was overheating – a hose cooled it down & a new shell bearing was slotted in & off we went.
After 4 days & nights we arrived on 15TH MARCH at CALGARY – at 3 PM. A 30 mins bus ride took us to 31 EFTS, DE WINTON, RAF STATION, where TIGER MOTHS fitted with cockpit canopies awaited us. You needed the canopy in winter – it was COLD!!
(All that was left in [underlined] 1983 [/underlined] was the rifle range butt, concrete bases of the buildings and the GUARD ROOM!!)
[page break]
of the air – the wind was so strong
My powers of control when sitting in the cockpit I found & my instructor agreed were not good enough to continue pilot training so I was “WASHED OUT.” I continued with ground school and was put forward to remuster to U/T. Nav. While awaiting my posting I also worked as “runner” in the station orderly room I also had two weeks leave on a farm at HARMATTON, OLDS.
[underlined] 27 MAY ’42 [/underlined] left DE WINTON, - 830 PM train pulled out at 9 PM – No not B.R. but CNR or CPR – to go the [sic] TRENTON, ONTARIO.
One loco driver was [indecipherable word] – LIVERPOOL and let me have a 50 mile, or so, ride on the foot plate. The engineer (fire man) didn’t have a shovel but a lever to control the automatic feed.
[underlined] 30 MAY [/underlined] Trenton, ONT, RCAF – remustered to U/T. Nav. 8TH JULY we were issued [deleted] whith [/deleted] with RCAF K D – the climate was quite warm.
[underlined] 16 JULY [/underlined] – moved to TORONTO, RCAF MANNING DEPOT TRENTON was full to the slams so 3 large parties were shipped out – about 40 went to TORONTO
The unit was for RCAF new recruits to be kitted out & given a bit of drill like ACR.
We were housed in CANADIAN NATIONAL EXHITION [sic] buildings – huge halls had rows & rows of 2 tier bunks – mine is 4 down and 12 across, I think!
[page break]
[underlined] 4 [/underlined]
DRUMMING OUT ceremony.
The man concerned had been caught & found guilty of stealing from his comrades. He was DRUMMED onto the parade – his tunic buttons and eagles were stripped from his uniform then he was DRUMMED OFF parade – a sight and sound never to be forgotten.
On some of our route-marches, the rest of the band, RCAF, joined the drummer to try to keep us in time. I took a ferry across LAKE ONTARIO to NIAGARA one Sunday PM where I bumped into a fellow YORKSHIRE man from SHEFFIELD I was from ROTHERHAM – 7 miles centre to centre.
[underlined] 16 AUGUST 42 [/underlined] – MALTON, TORONTO, NO 1 AOC. RCAF – we were the first RAF they had had and were “pre-warned” about some/most of our antics. The SWO took us off camp on the odd route-march & he was most upset when we started up with the old marching songs when outside the camp but wondered what had happened to us when we went silent & marched to attention on re-entering the camp gates.
[underlined] 31 AUGUST [/underlined] – visited and saw our first LANCASTER – I think it was the first one built in the factory on the airfield
[underlined] 4 DECEMBER ’42 [/underlined] – WINGS PARADE – with a layer of snow on the ground.
[underlined] 8 DECEMBER [/underlined] – Back to MONCTON.

at TORONTO. Snow did hold them up – the winds were high & with the snow & cold temperature the LOCOS were freezing up.
After Christmas several of us helped sort mail in the Post Office.
[underlined] JANUARY 2ND 1943 [/underlined] – paid – UK £1 NOTES – going HOME.
[underlined] 4 JAN [/underlined] – MONCTON – left by rail – 1 PM
[underlined] 5 JAN [/underlined] – NEW YORK – arrived – 5 PM
Boarded [underlined] QUEEN ELIZABETH (MARK I !!!) [/underlined] 7 PM.
[underlined] 6 JAN [/underlined] – Sailed 6 AM –
2 MEALS PER DAY – breakfast and late tea – in shifts.
US ARMY “SNOW DROPS” (MP’s) were “IN CHARGE”!!! We were 6/8 to a [deleted] cold [/deleted] cabin, U.S. troops in multi-storey bunks – packed like sardines
There was no smoking below decks and the promenade deck was, shuttered, blacked-out & out of bounds after dusk so I volunteered for GUN (.5 BROWNING) CREW. These were up on the top lifeboat deck – a bit wet & windy at times The ship rolled & pitched too – the dining tables were [indecipherable word] so it was as well to hang onto your plate or it [deleted] th [/deleted] would end up in a pile at one end or the other – grab it on its way back!!!
[underlined] 11 JANUARY [/underlined] – dropped anchor at 6 PM. – saw the harbour lights from my privileged place by the guns – 5 days at sea.
[page break]
train. Smooth track, stops and starts – after CNR/CPR! We left GOUROCK at 6 PM and arrived in HARROGATE at 3 AM.
Mail too & from CANADA was a bit erratic as we might expect and was of course all by sea.
We were able to order “food parcels” from stores to send direct to UK – I think we were rationed to one per month.
Cable and Wireless Co. had a system called EFM’s. (Expeditionary Forces Messages) They had a list of about 30 phrases and you could choose 3, writing the number for each on the form. You could add a birthdate or address but nothing else. They cost about 2/0d.
At times we did sit around, doing nothing, for long periods but in view of the numbers of us it was well organised.
The Canadian people were great and still are!!
I hope the above will help the story along. Sorry to be so late in compiling it – tempus fugit (as the scholars say)
