Bottom left - newspaper cutting title 'Southwark "Pathfinder" on goodwill mission'. States that Warrant Officer A.J. Pearce of Southwark will be a rear gunner of a Lancaster of 35 Squadron when it flies to the United States on a goodwill mission. 16 Lancasters and two Yorks will visit America to take part in Air Forces day on 1 August. They will visit New York, St Louis, Los Angeles, Denver, Long Beach, San Antonio and West Palm Beach. It adds that during the war W/O Pearce completed 44 operations including some with pathfinder force. He was awarded the DFM in December 1945.

The 35 Squadron planes carried their own ground crew and all flyers were veterans of attacks on Germany. Met by General George Stratemeyer. Noted that Warrant Officer Arthur Pearce has just returned from goodwill tour of the United States with a view that Americans know nothing about Britain and have no idea of life outside their own home town. A bomber command air gunner with 44 operations to his credit he joined 35 Squadron a year ago and was selected to make the trip with Lancaster air craft. Starting from Graveley with stops in Cornwall, Azores and Newfoundland then to New York. Visited St Louis, Denver, Washington DC and other large cities.

First page biography of Dennis William Raettig with information on other family members. Father was in merchant navy and brothers both served during the war in the navy and air force. Dennis joined Royal Air Force as an engine fitter. Dennis married Joan Wray in 1952 and they had two children. Other documents cover grandfather who was born in Wittenburg Germany 3 February 1864 who became a ships captain. Both his children including Dennis Raettig's father followed in merchant navy. His father served on the Blue Funnel Line in world war one when he was torpedoed. List ships and positions, letters, history of grandfathers dog and a picture of the ship 'Clan Graham'. A letter to Helene and Hertha Rättig in Vienna written in German and a translation sent 7 November 1936 telling history of family in England during world war one and after. A letter from Max Rättig to Alfred Schlingnann talking about his life as a German in England during the First World War and changing his name. Followed by other letters to members of the family in Vienna, and New York and a photographs of the family. Continues with history and biographies of the second, third and forth generations, photographs, letters, list of family and kin and family trees.

Interview with Cyril Gosling
Cyril Gosling trained as an armourer at Kirby in Blackpool and was first posted to 49 Squadron where he worked on the guns and turrets. As part of his role he would go on flights in the bombers to check the guns accuracy by firing at drogues. On one occasion they had to make an emergency landing when the engine failed. He often rode on the bomb trolleys on their way to the dispersals.
Cyril was chosen to move to 617 Squadron as an armourer when the squadron formed at RAF Scampton. He met Barnes Wallis and knew Guy Gibson, often taking his dog for a walk. Cyril flew in one of the Lancasters as they carried out a test run over the Derwent Water dam. Cyril's memory of the day of Eder, Möhne and Sorpe operation was marred by a tragic event at the base. His friend had a 'dear John' letter from his girlfriend and took his own life in front of Cyril. After the war Cyril moved to Canada and was involved with the destruction of war equipment not longer needed. He was saddened by the fact that along with armaments, they had to destroy clothing which would have been gratefully received by families in England. During his periods of leave he and fellow RAF colleagues went to New York. They were treated in his words like 'Royalty' and put up in hotels for free and were introduced to Frank Sinatra and Bing Crosby. Cyril also remembers going up the Empire State Building when later the same day a B-25 Mitchell bomber crashed into it in during thick fog. Cyril return by Ship to England in September 1946.
