An account of the resource
Five items. The collection consists of an oral history interview with Charlie Darby (b. 1924, 1897788 Royal Air Force), his logbook, a poem and two photographs. Sergeant Charlie Darby flew 30 night time and daylight operations in Halifaxes with 466 and 462 Squadrons from RAF Driffield as a rear gunner.

Observer's and air gunner's flying log book for Sergeant Charlie Darby, air gunner from 22 January 1944 to 16 January 1945. Charlie Darby was stationed at RAF Castle Kennedy and RAF Driffield where he flew Anson, Wellingtons and Halifaxes Mk 2 and 3. He took part in 30 night and daylight operations over Belgium, France, Germany and the Netherlands: Saint-Vith, Boulogne, Brest, Calais, Le Havre, Watten, Bochum, Bottrop, Cologne, Düsseldorf, Gelsenkirchen, Hannover, Jülich, Kiel, Koblenz, Ludwigshafen am Rhein, Magdeburg, Münster, Neuss, Oberhausen (Düsseldorf) Sterkrade, Opladen, Osnabrück, Wilhemshaven, Oostkapelle, Westkapelle. His pilots on operations were Flying Officer Evans and Flight Lieutenant Stuart. Operations include V-1 sites and army cooperation, with details on anti-aircraft fire, searchlights and attacks by Me 109 and Me 110

Extract from the flying log book for Herbert Davy, air gunner covering the period from 14 September 1943 to 3 October 1944. It details his flying training and operations flown. Bill Burnett’s Flying Log Book as Flight Engineer from 22 May 1944 to 20 April 1946. Initially with 1660 Heavy Conversion Unit before transferring to 5 Lancaster Finishing School and then 617 Squadron for operational duties in Europe. In January 1946 posted with 617 Squadron to RAF Digri, India with South East Asia Expeditionary Force.
Served at RAF Swinderby, RAF Syerston, RAF Woodhall Spa, RAF Waddington. Aircraft flown were Stirling, Lancaster I, Lancaster III, Lancaster VII.
Flew 25 day and 2 night operations with 617 Squadron to Brest, Westkapelle, Tromso (Tirpitz), Urft Dam, Ijmuiden, Politz, Rotterdam, Oslo Fjord, Bergen, Pootershaven, Bielefeld Viaduct, Nienburg Viaduct, Arnsberg Viaduct, Bremen, Farge, Hamburg, Swinemünde, Berchtesgaden. He also flew two Cook’s Tours and six Operation Dodge flights. His pilot on operations was Flight Lieutenant Goodman.
Includes a hand written note Dam Buster mines dropped in North Sea 31 March 1945.
