Neepawa Serves The Wings of the R.A.F.
Many girls from the Neepawa district, employed as civilians, are helping to operate the big R.A.F. elementary flying school which is training student pilots drawn from many parts of the British Commonwealth ranging from Cardiff to Ceylon. Here are scenes on the airport, pictured by George Young, a Free Press photographer. Top, Miss Mabel Morley, of Riding Mountain, wheels her cart of oil bottles from one plane to another, greasing them up so that they are ready for flight. Bottom left, a Ceylonese student pilot, Leading Aircraftman Chelliah Pathy, 26, a law student selected by the Ceylon government to be a flier. Bottom right, Leading Aircraftman David Lewis, 19, from South Wales, just about to take off in a Tiger Moth.

FLIERS WELCOMED
Salt-Water Men in Neepawa
This is one of a series of articles dealing with the training establishments of the three armed services located in Manitoba.
By LESLIE G. BISHOP
New Brunswickers – not Blue Noses, please – set down in the heart of Manitoba to operate No [inserted] 35 [/inserted][deleted] 33 [/deleted] elementary flying school for student pilots of the R.A.F., miss their buckwheat pancakes and salt-water fish, but they are delighted with the way in which the people of Neepawa have taken them into their homes.
This was the report of J.W. Humphrey, managing director of the Miramichi Flying Training school, who formerly ran an automobile business in Moncton, N.B., and now is operating a big flying taxi business over Beautiful Plains.
The Moncton civilian company, which previously for 15 months operated No. 21 E.F.T.S. at Chatham, N.B., came to Neepawa two months ago, and ever since, R.A.F. men say, the food at the air school has greatly improved. On the food question, John Fallow, an airman from Devonshire, said he was surprised by the number of Canadians who are cafe-minded. He likes home cooking.
One of the founders and for some time president of the Moncton Flying club, Mr. Humphrey gave a business-like statement. The company has come to Neepawa for the duration. It brought a staff of 142 men from Moncton and, since arrival, has employed approximately 200 men and women from the Neepawa district. It still needs some 40 automobile mechanics who can be trained as aircraft mechanics. The town of Neepawa is helping to solve the New Brunswickers’ housing problem by sponsoring construction of 40 prefabricated houses through Wartime Housing, limited, Toronto.
While expressing some uneasiness on the buckwheat pancakes question, Mr. Humphrey said that the whole company was well pleased with the hospitality and friendliness of the people of Manitoba. He admitted that flying conditions were better here than in the maritimes “The weather is more suitable and the west seems to be one large landing-field,” he said.
Comfort Arrangements
He outlined the arrangements made for the comfort and relaxation of the airmen, which include organized sports, a Canadian Legion library, a theatre, canteens, a post office, a hospital and a barbershop. A classical music club is active under the direction of Flying Officer H.L.V. Tubbs.
Looking after the welfare of the R.A.F. airmen is Captain J.A. Banville, Saint John, N.B., Canadian Legion auxiliary services representative, a veteran who won the Distinguished Conduct Medal and the Military Medal while serving in the ranks during the last war.
Key men in the civilian operating company include: Mr. Humphrey, operating manager; R.C. Mills, assistant manager; C.C. Dryden, comptroller; C.J. Fitch, chief ground instructor; Ian Saunders, chief air engineer; W.H. Randall, station superintendent; F.H. Peacock, supply manager; W.J. Bergin, civilian personnel supervisor; and H.L. Bailey, quartermaster.
Squadron Leader G.E. Thompson, of Winchester, Hampshire, England, who is officer in charge of R.A.F. personnel and chief flying instructor at No. 35, received George Young, a Free Press photographer, and this reporter at the air school. He eloquently praised the kindness of Neepawa citizens to the R.A.F.
The air station increased its size by one-third in July. Unlike R.C.A.F. elementary flying schools, R.A.F. schools of this type use only air force men as instructors. Key men in the R.A.F. staff at Neepawa, Squadron Leader Thompson reported, include Flight Lieut. Eric Bradley, of Perth, Scotland, assistant chief flying instructor, and Flight Lieut. W.H. Brett, Northwood, Middlesex, England, administrative officer.
Squadron Leader Thompson has seen a lot of country since he started his travels in a tank, as a subaltern officer of Britain’s small tank corps in 1934. “When you close up the tank as you have to sometimes, the heat inside is terrific.” He joined the R.A.F. and became a pilot of Blenheim bombers.
Stationed at Medicine Hat
Before coming to Neepawa, he was stationed at the Medicine Hat R.A.F. school for 15 months, and he confessed that Alberta to him looked like one vast expanse of desert. Manitoba’s countryside, with its trees and green fields, seems much more like home to him.
He took us out to the flying field, where scores of little Tiger Moth planes were sailing about in the golden sunset sky. Miss Mabel Morley, of Riding Mountain, Man., a civilian employee, who used to serve maple syrup in a Neepawa cafe, was wheeling a tray full of bottles of a more precious amber fluid – oil – to a plane that stood on the tarmac. She was thrilled to be working with the air force.
We met one of the student pilots, Leading Aircraftman Chelliah Pathy, a Ceylonese law student, who was selected by the Ceylon government as one of a group of men to be trained as fliers. Asked what he thought of the Indian question, he said he was interested in flying, not politics. One of his classmates is a Hindu, Leading Aircraftman Vijayendra Kumar, of New Delhi, India, who won a B.A. degree in political economy at the University of Leeds, England.
The student pilots include eight officers who have transferred from the British army to the R.A.F.
Instructor Lands
Just landing was an instructor, Flying Officer Richard Magginson, 26, a rosy-cheeked Yorkshire farmer, who won the Diistinguished [sic] Flying Medal. As the pilot of a Blenheim, he dropped bombs on the Nazi tanks advancing to Dunkirk. “When we came back we could see tiny destroyers zig-zagging across the Channel. A trail of smoke extended up the east coast of England for 300 or 400 miles. It was the smoke-screen from Dunkirk.”
He told us a story, backed, he said, by the word of a reliable correspondent: In the early days of the war a British bomber, based on an airdrome in France, made a leaflet raid on Germany. As it flew back over the French border, the air gunner sat happily in his seat at the back. The plane, whose engines were behaving in a strange manner, made a pancake landing. The gunner got out and waited for the pilot and observer. They did not come. They had bailed out half an hour before, but as the speaking-tube had been shot away, the air gunner didn’t know about it.

Dear Mum, Dad, Yvonne & Moira,
Sorry I have not written for a few days, but we are having our exams this week, & I have been swotting quite a bit. I’m not worrying about the ground exams, it’s the final flying test that is the trouble. A lot of chaps go down the chute then.
We finish the course in a fortnight, & I hope to get some leave & go somewhere interesting, & we shall then be posted to S.F.T.S. if we have passed. We shall be staying in the same area.
I saw 49th Parrallel [sic] last night & it was queer to see the German sailors in Winnipeg, & recognise the places.
I’ve managed to get hold of a second hand camera for a dollar & half. It only takes small pictures, but it should be quite good. It’s just as difficult to get cameras here as at home I asked for a cheap one, in Winnipeg & the cheapest they had was $130 (about £27)!
I am writing this at night. I am rather hoping to do my night solo to-night, but it is not too easy so I may not manage it.
I receive your letters & airgraphs regularly, & the airgraphs only take about 14 – 20 days, & its grand to here [sic] from you. Please remember me to everyone
Much love
Terry.

Dear Mum, Dad & Moira, & Yvonne,
Just a line to give you my new address. We are going there today, which is rather sooner than I had expected.
Most of the old “B” Flight are going to Texas & Florida, & I am the only one going to Neepawa, but I shall no doubt soon make friends. Pete Lamb & Mac are also split up, which is too bad.
How is Jack getting on. I should like to know very much, also John & the other lads. I haven’t seen Denis since Sunday, so I don’t know if he has been posted.
All for now.
Love.
Terry.

Dear Mum, Dad & Moira.
I’ve just come back from leave, & am now waiting for posting.
Since I last wrote I’ve had a marvellous time Going to parties, shows, tobogganing, skating, etc.
We went toboganning last Sunday, & afterwards, at about midnight, Arthur Walker & myself decided to cut across the Assinaboine [sic] River to get home. We were nearly across when I stept [sic] on a soft piece of ice & went through. Luckily, I managed to break the ice, & get ashore, but I had to run all the way home as the temp. was 20° below, even so I had to break my trousers to get them off, they were frozen solid.
I’ve had 15 letters etc waiting for me Several from you, of all different dates. One air mail was dated 12th Dec. It only took 12 days to arrive.
I’m writing this now, as it gets to you fairly quickly, & I will write a letter later to-day.
Only seven of us have been chosen for single-engine aircraft, & only one chap I know so I shall have to start making friends all over again.
Love to all
Terry

Dear All,
I didn’t write before, as I wanted to find out if I’d passed. I have, thank goodness, but we’ve been in a bit of a panic as several chaps have been chucked off, & I wasn’t too [deleted] sh [/deleted] sure.
We are having the flight dinner to-night, but I can’t go, unfortunately as I am on Jankers again for not turning up on a parade. Rather a poor show.
I’ve had rather a poor week as I had to be before the Chief Flying Instructor for having a dog-fight with an instructor’s plane. However I got off O.K.
I have been recommended for single-engine planes although this doesn’t necessarily mean I shall go on them.
Thank you very much for the nice birthday telegram. It arrived just before my birthday. I’ve had quite a few Christmas cards. Did you get mine?
I’m writing an airgraph as we have heard there is practically no Airmail now. This probably explains why my letters have taken so long to arrive.
I am going on a fortnight’s leave to-morrow, & I’m going to Winnipeg, as we are not allowed to go to the [missing word] and as we don’t get a railway warrant, I can’t afford to go anywhere further afield.
If I go on singles I have a chance of going to one of three stations, of which one is Weyburn. In any case they are all fairly near there so I should see Don.
That’s all the news for now.
Love to all
Terry

A2 Flight 67 Course,
35 EFTS,
Neepawa Man.
17–12–42.
Dear Yvonne,
Thank you very much for your Christmas card & letter, it was very nice to hear from you. As you can see by the date, I am 20 to–day.
I have now finished the course here & I’m glad to say, I’ve passed O.K. & we are now hoping to get a couple of weeks Christmas leave before going onto the next course I’m hoping to go on single–engine planes, but I don’t know yet.
You ask what sort of a place we are in. Well Manitoba is several times larger than England but it is very sparsely populated. Neepawa, which is the 4th largest town in Manitoba & is marked as a large town on the map, is about the size of Severn Beach. This is Prairie country but t is different to what I thought. It is just hundreds of miles of flat wheat fields with woods, hills & lakes every so often Unfortunately all the wheat had been gathered before we arrived.
I wish we had been here in summer, as there are buffalo moose [deleted] deer [/deleted] elk
[page break]
deer, skunk & all sorts of animals in a mountain range near here, but the weather is too cold to go there on leave.
The temperature at the moment is about 15o below zero & we are told that winter hasn’t started yet!
Twenty–five of our flight went to a Turkey dinner in Neepawa last night The old Mayor, who is 82 is very proud of his town & in his speech he gave a list of places in the town 4 grocers, 2 drug stores 5 barbers 2 Hotels & salt plant etc. He said they were also proud to have their own water supply & sewers.
Still these people are plenty tough, the white people only came out here about 80 years ago & they had to spend the first winter in tents & I can tell that’s some show!
I like your request for me to send you stuff. Where do you think the money is coming from? It goes very quickly & I’m sure to be broke after Christmas. Still I’ll see what I can do.
We didn’t see much of the States but we did see the sky scrapers in Boston.
There are some very attractive girls here, but I’ve been too tired after flying so much to do much, but Christmas is coming. I suppose you’re going out with a Young Farmer
[page break]
Why didn’t you sing in the competition glamour girl. I know you’ve got a voice like an old goat but you think it’s good. I wish the old woman has made you sing for revenge & that would really have made everyone cry
Have we had any snow yet! Last night we had a blizzard & in about 8 hours there were drifts several feet thick everywhere And, girlie does the wind howl. When we get a really hard blizzard people have been known to go out of the house to cross over to a neighbour, & they’ve never been seen again.
I’ve got some very interesting photographs which I shall bring home with me. I managed to get a small camera for $1–50 (about 7/–) & it takes quite good little photographs.
I’ve also bought a watch, a fountain pen & a pair of skates.
The skates are pretty good & only cost a dollar. We have a rink on the camp, & I’m getting quite good.
Well I think that’s all the news for now Yvonne, so Cheerioh

[inserted] The ground is continually covered in snow of course & it glistens in the sun just like thousands of pieces of tinsel. [/inserted]
Dear Mum, Dad, Yvonne & Moira,
I have received several airgraphs from you lately & also one from Jack & Mrs Coram & also a postcard from you. I can’t understand why you haven’t received any letters yet. Have you received the parcel I sent you 2 months ago?
I’ve been corresponding with Denis for some time & have heard several times from him. He seems to be in a very pleasant spot.
This is the last week of our course. I’ve passed [deleted word] everything thank goodness, but I was very disappointed with my showing in the last flying test in fact I was very off form that day & am surprised I passed, although I don’t suppose I could have been too bad. However if they decide they don’t want so many pilots I should think I shall be one to go, although my instructor says my flying generally is above average (line[?]-shooting!!) Anyway flying is very pleasant this week, with nothing to worry about & I’m enjoying it very much. Doing several cross-countries, & have done my night solo O.K.
[page break]
I’m still hoping to go on singles & if I do there is a fifty-fifty chance I shall go to Don’s place.
We have quite a good skating rink here in camp now & have a fine time, as we have a half day off every day. I got a pair of skates for a dollar (really good one, with boots attached, of course) & am getting on quite well with it.
That chap in Neepawa I told you about, who comes from Bristol, has invited me to their Christmas dinner but I shall be on leave then. It is rumoured that we shall be getting 3 or 4 weeks leave which will be grand as they celebrate both Christmas & New Year equally here. The only trouble for us will be lack of cash probably. I don’t know where I am going, but I may go to Banff in the Rockies, or Minneapolis in the States.
I’ve had a Christmas card from John Fisher & I’ve heard from a couple more of my old I.T.W. pals & may be[sic] we shall meet at S.F.T.S.
We really have a marvellous set of instructors [deleted] here [/deleted] to our flight & my instructor P/O Shanley is grand. He played “tig” with us on the ice yesterday. He’s a very young chap, & very helpful.
I hope you have a very enjoyable Christmas & here’s hoping the war will be over by the next new year.
Love to all
Terry
P.S. Hope the 2 Fishes are still happy. P.P.S. Temp is about 15[degree symbol] below zero. P.T.O.

Dear Mum, Dad, Yvonne & Moira
I’m writing this letter in the canteen just before going to the station flicks.
[deleted] We [/deleted] I went into Winnipeg last week-end & stayed at the house of the people Don stays with. They are very nice people, Mr. Turnbull is a retired R.S.M (regular) & Mrs Turnbull is Scotch. They also have their married daughter Mabel with them. Unfortunately I was too tired to do much. I intended to go to a club, where they have dancing & a show & where a lot of the lads go. Anyway, I went to sleep, & when I woke up, it was too late to go.
The trouble with Manitoba is that the only places that sell beer are the beer parlours, which are few & far between, & very bare & unhomely. (Incidently[sic] “homely” in Canada means “ugly” so we’ve got to be careful what we say). You can’t drink even in the night clubs except on the Q.T. so I reckon you wouldn’t like it Mum. (better not show this to Gran.)
Incidentally, you talk about U.S.A. being more glamorous. Listen here folks in a recent census of North America it was decided that Winnipeg girls were second only to Hollywood for beauty. So sometime when I’m not tired I shall probably do something about it.
You’d love the shops here, Fishy. In the window of the Hudson’s Bay Stores there’s a big Father Christmas, who slaps his hands & laughs all day, you can hear him right across the street. He’s not real of course.
[Sentence missing due to inadequate scanning]
[page break]
Christmas trees outside their houses & they take people up in planes to see all the lights. All the stores vie with one another for Christmas [deleted] presents [/deleted] decorations.
We’ve now started night flying, & its quite good fun, but I prefer the day. I’m getting pretty good at aerobatics & not so hot on [deleted letter] instrument flying, so I’m hoping to go on single engine planes, though I’m not fussy.
This course ends at Christmas, so we are expecting a leave then & we should have a very good time, as people here really do celebrate, so I’m told.
I’ve been asked to call in & see the local butcher in Neepawa, as he comes from Bristol, & would like to see me. It seems that if you don’t rake[?] someone up for me to see, [indecipherable word] someone else does.
By the way, I nearly forgot, I [deleted indecipherable word] showed Mr & Mrs Turnbull [inserted]& Mabel [/inserted] the photograph of the group & they said you looked very young, mum, they couldn’t believe you were my mother. They also said Dad was a very handsome man. Ha, Ha I thought the photograph was a good likeness, but it couldn’t have been.
We can’t get any beer on the camp, so I’ve had practically nothing alcoholic since I came to Canada.
Well that’s all for now.
Much love
Terry

Dear Mum, Dad, Yvonne & Moira,
Sorry I have not written for a few days but I was on 3 days “Jankers”. I didn’t turn up for “Link” trainer, as I didn’t see the notice. Unfortunately on the 3rd day, I was late for a Janker parade & was “admonished” & given an extra day. Still I’ve finished now.
All I have heard from you so far is the cable. Thanks for that, but do you know it took [deleted word] a fortnight to arrive.
I have posted my Christmas cards. I could only get 9 so I had to spread them a bit. I meant to send one to Yvonne [deleted] to [/deleted] but I’m afraid I have lost her address. I sent one to Gran Ford after all. I was going to send one to John, Charlie & Basil, but they would have been hopelessly late. I hope Auntie Lot & Gran Chandler get [deleted] there [/deleted] theirs as I am a bit shaky on the address. Also ‘Auntie Cis’
By the way I see on your cable that you thank me for my airgraph. I sent a cable as soon as I arrived at Moncton. Did you receive it?
I am going to Winnipeg this week-end, & have been invited to Don’s friend’s house to stay. Don is also going to try to get there.
I’ve got plenty of solo hours in now, & am now doing a certain amount of aerobatics – I always do them at a safe height, & they are very enjoyable.
We had a very good show here this week. The company was the “Lifebuoy Jollies[?]. Advertising the soap, of course.
However, they were very good, indeed. In fact, it was in watching them that I got my extra dose of Jankers. Defaulters are not allowed to see camp entertainment, but I had to give out programmes & so was allowed to stay. I was so interested in the show that I forgot to parade again until too late.
By the way Mum, I haven’t seen any Hiltone[?] over here yet, but I’ll look out for it.
The radio programmes have been very interesting lately. They are as you probably know, all sponsored by advertising companies, but we have heard Veronica Lake, Lana Turner, Don Ameche, Ray Milland, Irene Dunne, Edgar Bergen & Charlie MacArthur, W. C. Fields & Jack Benny, in various plays. The plays are not improved by being cut off in the middle, while the announcer tells you that your liver is out of order & you need “Stinko”.
I hope you’re studying for your exams, fishy, & if you pass I may manage to get you something else beside a watch.
Any news of the pub. yet, Dad? I hope you get your wishes soon. When is the old dame at the Lion going to snuff it?
The local butcher in Neepawa used to live in Bristol & a friend of his has asked me to go & see him as he is very interested in the old town, still. There are really a tremendous number of chaps who came from England & they all introduce themselves & yarn about the Old Country.
Well, I think that’s all the news for now so Cheerioh[sic]

Dear Mum, Dad, Yvonne & Moira,
I have now been here a fortnight & have soloed O.K. & am getting in more solo hours. However the standard is still very high & there is a chance of being washed out any time.
It is now well below freezing point & the ground has been covered with snow for some time. We spent last weekend in Winnipeg, & had a very good time. The people are remarkably hospitable & all the flight were put up & fed at private houses. I bought a watch & fountain pen, & also an electric razor, as my skin gets very sore shaving with an ordinary razor. I went to see an American rugger match, Dad, but it is not nearly as entertaining as our rugger, as it is much less open & much more restricted. Winnipeg is a very nice town, much more open & spacious than England towns & the illuminations beat anything I’ve ever seen.
I’ve got into touch with Don who is stationed about 200 miles away, & he is going to try to get to Winnipeg on my next 48 hour leave. I should certainly like to see him.
Neepawa is quite a pleasant village although it is marked on the map as a large town. Cliff Freeman, Dicky Douse & myself sometimes go to see a film show there. In Winnipeg when troops are travelling
[page break]
(cont.)
and stop at the town for an hour or so, the people take a band, & girls down to the station & have a dance there. There is also an Airman’s Club, run for us & lots of College girls go there to dance with us.
The news in Africa is grand isn’t it. I can see the length of the war being shortened at last.
We have a cinema here in camp & we get quite good films.
This part of Canada seems to be very similar to U.S.A. & there are quite a few Americans about. In fact the people I was staying with are American.
I’ve had letters from John Fisher, who is at Detroit, & Pete Lamb. Pete has sent me some photographs taken at Moncton.
I hope you are all well & happy, & I shall look forward to hearing from you soon.
Please give my best wishes to everyone, especially Jack, & maybe when I am trained we can get in the same crew.
Love
Terry

Dear Mum, Dad, Yvonne & Moira,
Well, here I am at EFTS at last & I have had only one flight so far. The weather is fairly cold, but winter has not started yet.
I had a very pleasant journey here. The train was fairly comfortable, with bunks for sleeping We spent a day at Montreal on the way. I bought a sundae for 30 cents. It was terrific, with cream, icecream [sic], & all manner of other things. I bought six pairs of stockings but I won’t send them on, as they might not all arrive, or may be damaged. I hope you get the parcel I sent. It is difficult to send very much useful stuff that won’t get stale or damaged, & it is simply amazing the way the money goes. Pete Lamb & I went to see “Tales of Manhattan” in Montreal. It is a new film & crammed with stars. All seats are
[page break]
same price with no smoking allowed in Canada.
Montreal is nearly all French, but a very nice town. At night a huge lighted cross shines from the hill overlooking it.
We left Montreal at 7p.m & passed through Ottawa at night. We were given a packet of cigarettes & chocolate by “The knights of Columbus” in Montreal.
We are travelling through woods and lakes, woods & lakes for hundreds of miles. I should think that (not including the Great lakes), 1/3 of Eastern Canada is composed of lakes. We travelled along the edge of Lake Superior for some time & it was a very impressive sight with waves breaking on the rocks, the snow & the searchlight of the train illuminating the ground ahead. The hooters on the train make a devilish row. We passed a Hudson bay trading post, in a snowstorm, & it was just like at the flicks, a few shacks, 2 men coming along to it by canoe, with Indian shacks all round. It’s amazing the way this train stopped at stations consisting of 2 houses & a chapel. Some of the people must lead very lonely lives.
On Saturday we began to get to the wheat fields of Manitoba, & eventually reached Winnipeg. The people here are wonderfully hospitable & although we only
[page break]
stopped for 10 minutes we were given cigs & chocs. By the pilots & observers of last war in Winnipeg & apples & magazines by the Airmen’s Committee of women in Winnipeg.
We should get 48hrs leave once a fortnight, & if we go to their place in Winnipeg which is 3 hours journey from Neepawa, they will give us addresses of people who will put us up for the weekend. The people consider it an honour & pleasure to do this. I left Pete Lamb at Winnipeg, as he was going to Carron, Sask.
The food on the station is terrific. I don’t want to make you jealous but our regular breakfast is:- choice of 8 cereals, with grapefruit, glass of tomato juice, 2 eggs & bacon, toast & marmalade & coffee.
We had chicken for dinner on
[page break]
Sunday.
I hope you have received my letters. I have not heard from you yet but I don’t suppose I shall for a couple of day’s.
I shall be very interested to hear how everyone is, especially Jack, John & Yvonne. Does she still like farming.
Please remember me to friends, grans, gramp, uncles & aunts.
Hope you are happy & well & that Moira is studying for her scholarship.
Much love to all.
Yours.

6-1-43.
Dear All,
I’m writing a pretty detailed letter. I sent the airgraph on as these letters seem to take so long. I’ve had letters & airgraphs from you ranging from 23rd November to 12th December.
I’ve been writing pretty regularly so you should have been getting more than you have.
We are expecting to be posted to Weyburn on Saturday, & as I shall be very busy getting ready I’m afraid I shan’t be able to write everyone. I wished you’d thank Auntie Cis very much for the cable, Auntie Lot & Gran Ford for the airgraphs.
Thank you fishee for the card & airgraph. I’m glad to see you’re working hard, & I expect you will have done your 2 lengths by now. I expect you had a nice Christmas.
I’m sorry there wasn’t any more in the parcel. I’ve seen lots
[page break]
of things I wanted to buy for you all but having had my money stolen I’m afraid I couldn’t. I’m afraid there is no chance of seeing my money again now.
Thank you very much for the letters & Christmas card. It was nice to have so many at once.
I’m sorry to hear Gran Ford is not so well, & I sincerely hope she is better by now.
I didn’t write in more detail about the voyage as I didn’t think it would get past the censor.
I was only sick for the first day out, & it was more through stuffing myself with chocolate, oranges gassy lemonade & all the other rich food aboard than anything else.
You suggest I should send the stockings on, but I don’t know anyone going home & I don’t trust the post so I will hang on them.
I’m very interested to hear that Eric is on Ops. I hope he gets on O.K.
So Roy is going away eh? We are certainly scattered over the globe
[page break]
now.
[deleted] I got y [/deleted] I certainly had a marvellous leave in Winnipeg. Up to the 27th I didn’t do much, then I moved to Mrs Turnbull’s (where Don stays) which was near to where Arthur Walter, John Stockbridge (he is on singles with me) & Pete Worrall. We went playing skittles (they call it bowling here.) On New Years Eve we went to a party at the lady’s [deleted] sister [/deleted] [inserted] daughter [/inserted] where the lads are staying.
I drank a goodly drop of whisky , & considering I’ve never had any before I was not unduly affected. We were all taken home at about 5 a.m.
I got up at mid-day, & we went to a party at an American’s house. She is a oldish woman with a couple of daughters who comes from California. She has a marvellous house, modelled on an old English Tudor house.
Since then we’ve been ice skating, roller skating, bowling again, & tobaganning [sic], including falling in the river.
Mr & Mrs Turnbull & Mabel were very good & I had a splendid time altogether. I never got up before midday, the whole 13 days.
[page break]
I met a very attractive girl indeed in Winnnipeg & took her to a couple of shows. She’s a very nice girl & “doesn’t trust English airmen!!” although she likes them.
Unfortunately if I go to Weyburn I shan’t get another chance to go to Winnipeg, & that together with the fact that I shall be separated from all my new pals except John has left me rather cheesed. Still I expect I shall recover as usual. It will be very nice to see Don.
The S.F.T.S course takes from 12 – 16 weeks, when with luck I get my wings & start home again. Anyway I’m very glad I got onto singles, although it doesn’t necessarily mean I go on ops in them.
Well that’s all the news for now. I’ve only got 30 cents left to last me 9 days & I owe $6.50.
Much love to all
[underlined] Terry [/underlined]
P.S. Please send on the socks as I only have 3 pairs.
