T.D.HAMPSON
ATTORNEY-AT-LAW
FREDONIA, KANSAS
September 4, 1945
Dear Mrs. Whybrow:
Mrs Hampson just telephoned me she had just received a very nice letter from you. I just happened to be dictating my morning’s mail and trust you will permit me to send you this greeting.
The war is over. A lot of things have come to pass since we first met a splendid English gentleman, an RAF Cadet, one May day a number of years ago here on Kansas soil. Fred’s sole experience has been one of resulting anxiousness, hope and resulting pride. Now he will soon be returned to civilian pursuits and in these he will excel as he has in his service for his Government. We are proud for you, Mrs. Whybrow, that you have such a son and we appreciate as one of the nice happenings of this war that it was our privilege to make his acquaintance.
Then too, our family through him has had a very fine contact with a lady who was first mentioned in our home by this lad in the words “my Mother.” The way Fred spoke these words impressed us with his love, admiration and pride in you. They implied, I wish you could meet “my Mother.”
Now that this conflict is history, we will remember those things dear to us growing out of it and one of them which we will always treasure is the feeling of friendship for you and your Fred.
Sincerely,
[signed] T. D. Hampson [/signed]

Dear Fred:
At lunch this noon, Mrs. Hampson calls to my attention the Americans celebrate the Signing of the Declaration of Independence July 4, next, and that date happens to fall on a Saturday.
Frances is home from the hospital and in good repair. We have had considerable wet weather and the inside house painting has not carried on as rapidly as expected. It may stretch out over a couple of three weeks yet; however, if you boys can stand the odor [odour] of fresh paint, we would like mighty well to have your company the week-end of July 4, beginning Friday evening, if convenient to you. We could very easily plan to meet you within driving range from Fredonia, by car.
Our invitation to you boys is always open and we particularly extend it at this time thinking it a very proper celebration of our Declaration of Independence to have lads of the Royal Air Force helping us.
Trusting that you and John or some combination of the Air Force can be with us, I am,
Sincerely,

Dear Fred:
Received your snaps and note this morning. I have hastily posted them to Frances who is a patient in Bethany Hospital, Room 304, Kansas City, Kansas. Last Saturday Frances underwent an operation for both of her eyes. She has been in darkness since that time and will be in the hospital for a few days yet. The operation was completely successful and we expect to have her home by the first of the coming week.
Whoever operated your camera was a pretty good photographer. Thanks, and I know Frances will appreciate the [deleted one word] [inserted by hand] snaps. [/inserted by hand] Give our regards to Jefferys and Rooke if and when you might see him and bear in mind we want the pleasure of entertaining you boys again soon.
In the absence of my wife, the painters have been getting a little work done.
Sincerely,
[inserted by hand] Francis will be pleased to receive prints for her friend Mary[?] Mack[?]. [/inserted by hand]

Dear Mr. Whybrow,
I received your letter the other day and I enjoyed it very much. It was just a week ago today that all you boys were here. It doesn’t really seem that long ago. You’re presence here certainly caused some excitement. You see, we don’t entertain British boys in Fredonia every day.
The dance was fun, wasn’t it? I’m certain I had a marvellous time and I’m so glad you did! I only

hope that you can come back for another week-end when its convenient. I’m sure everyone here would love to see you all again.
Tell Mr. Rooke and Sgnt. Whitefield that we are going to have another dance and that they should be here. Tell them “hello” for me too!
We had our big school dance or Prom. last Wednesday. Do you remember that large building we were in? Well, we decorated it up as a huge flower garden, with large baskets of flowers and

and[sic] little picket fences and trellises. It was really lovely and the dance band was really solid – it was grand! We had punch, a fruit drink, and cookies. The dance was from 8:00 until 12:00 and I think everyone had a grand time.
I have been playing tennis this afternoon and I’m tired. Some of my friends and I are going roller skating this evening. When I come home I will be worn out.
I must close now, but before I do, I’ve been seeing a silver plane over Fredonia. Is it your training plane? Have you flown over?
Sincerely yours,
Mary Margaret Verchère

BLUE MEADOWS
FREDONIA, KANSAS
May 19, 1946
Dear Mrs. Whybrow,
The thot [sic] of a visit by Fred thrills us. We request you help make the thot [sic] a reality. Your letter telling us of Freds [sic] plan was received a couple of days ago and following only a day or two a conversation in our home, which I think will be of interest, and which developed about like this.
I was in the orchard at Blue Meadows, the thot [sic] that struck me and very real, Fred Whybrow is going to show up for a visit and soon. Upon returning home so real was the impression from this that I mentioned it to Mrs. Hampson. She said, ‘Isn’t that strange? I had the same thot [sic] and started to mention it to Frances, and then didn’t.’ Frances in another part of the house and hearing her name mentioned joins us. We repeat. Frances said, ‘Wouldn’t that be just grand. I hope he does.’
[page break]
In these few words Frances spoke for all of us.
Imagine our delight, Mrs. Whybrow, when two days latter [sic] Mrs. Hampson received your lovely letter, which among other things, told of Freds [sic] plan to visit us on his way home.
We are expecting him and while he is here we will demonstrate to Fred not only is, ‘There no place in the world like England,’ but also there is not another Fredonia Kaus.
Of course we don’t know Freds [sic] schedule. Necessity may change his schedule and his plan. We hope not.
Our family has planned a vacation beginning July 15th for thirty days in Glacier National Park. This is in the state of Montana and only a few miles south of the south Canadian border. We would be most pleased to have Fred share this vacation with us. We have ample cabin reservation and it is one grand place for vacation, rest relaxation and fun, it has everything.

Dear Mrs. Whyhope:-
Coming home just now I note the absence of Mrs Hampson for the minute. From the looks of things she has been doing some letter writing. I notice an envelope addressed to you and that this note might be included.
Our way of living has changed so very much since it was first our privilege to know Fred. I remember at that time I was writing what big eaters we were and how we had family picnics. We don’t do that anymore instead our people are all too busy in war work if not in active military service to get together and then if we could it would be on limited rationed food. We do well though; We have nothing to complain about.
I wish you could personally know Mrs Hampson and Frances. Do you play bridge? I ask this to illustrate. When we met Fred we knew such a fine lad had a mighty sweet mother some place. We wrote to you. We liked you and in turn Dorothy wanted send to you some little token, plentiful here to show the esteem she and Frances felt. That was done. Well, Mrs Whybrow imagine my wife and daughters amazement when they find themselves receiving such prize gifts at your [one indecipherable word]
[page break]
Your expression this wise under conditions as now exist in your Country make them the more treasured. In the game of Bridge you would have “over trumped us.”
Do you give any attention to politics in the US? I am thinking particularly of President Roosevelt and the possibility of a 4th term.
If you choose pass this note on to Fred. We think of him often and our best wishes are always for him.
Mrs Whybrow this is just a happen so letter all because Mrs Hampson was away when I came in and leaving her desk open. I hope you don’t mind.
With sincere good wishes to you & convey to Fred my kindest personal good wishes, I am
Sincerely
J D Hampson

C/O Mrs. Alice Whybrow
Dear Fred
We have read the King’s English refined by Shakespeare; we have read it and listened to it as used by [inserted] the [/inserted] Prime Minister in moving the world.
Influential as the rhetoric of these named, they do not impress us or warm our hearts towards the English as did your long-looked-for-letter, received but a day or two ago by our family. To us you symbolize Great Britain’s military force in it’s armed men. When we hear of Great Britain’s activity, we attach to personalities like yourself the success or the reverse. This developes from our treasured acquaintance with you. Great Britain may have other Ambassadors, but so far as our family is concerned, Fred Whybrow was and is Ambassador Deluxe.
Tomorrow is our Independence Day. Just a year ago we enjoyed you and Rook in our home so much. We would not turn the clock back a year, but we would like to look forward to a time when we could really recount experience with you.
Fred, in the year that has passed, we have thought about you many, many times; as you know, we have had some correspondence with your mother and received some pictures of the members of the family. We have had a look at sister who made for you, “calf’s foot jelly”. We would like to know your family better.
I will say for you that in your deliberate way and for an Englishman, you are quite a kidder. When you wrote to us
[page break]

from Chicago, you mentioned you were going to write frequently, and if the measure of time when you did write was a frequency interval, we will have to write a new dictionary.
Fred, I don’t know what you anticipate as a life’s vocation but I suggest whatever it may be, you have opportunity to make use of a most exceptional talent, and that is to write a wonderful letter.
Mrs. Hampson and Frances think I should write this letter in longhand. I don’t choose to offer my scribblings in comparison to the manner in which you prepare your letters.
We will celebrate the 4th of July for all of us tomorrow.
With kindest regards and very best wishes, I am,
Sincerely

My dear Mrs. Whybrow,
I am delighted to tell you that we have received your lovely New Year gifts and the pretty cards. The pillow slips are lovely and are now doing duty in our bedroom. They look very pretty and fit our pillows as if they had been made especially for them. Bless your heart, for the kindness and generosity that prompted you to send them. When this war is over I am going to send you a nice present.
Frances was “thrilled” with the lovely little lace collar. It looks very pretty on her dress and she is quite proud of it. She treasures it because it came from England and from you. She also likes the card you sent and she expects to write and thank you.
Mother Hampson was very pleased with her card. She took it down to show Mrs Sutcliff, (her friend who came from England) and then she took it to show at one of her club meetings. Fred and Bernard Rooke went with her to call on Mrs Sutcliff, when they were here. I am sure Mother Hampson is going to write to you.

Our food rationing began in earnest February 22nd. We are now or will be by April 1st rationed on just about everything except clothing. However shoes are rationed.
This new system is copied from the English system. In preparing our meals it is going to require more careful planning and more time spent in preparation. But if you people can do it, the least we can do, is to do our best.
Tom and Fances [sic] and I are going to have a good time planting a Victory garden out at the farm and when the time comes I expect to do a great deal of canning. Here at home, in the flower beds, I am planting carrots and lettuce among the tulips.
We hope that Fred is in the best of health, please give him our very best regards.
The war conditions look much better for the “Allies” day by day and as you so well express it “We will hope that this New Year will bring the Blessings of Peace.”
Frances wanted me to ask and I join with her in the request: “If you have a picture of yourself that you could spare, we would so much like to have it. For we would love to have a picture of you.”
Thank you again for the lovely gifts and the attractive cards. With our very best wishes for health and prosperity to you and your family.
Yours very sincerely
Mrs.Thos. D. Hampson
