On the outer wall of the cemetery, a perpetual light burns above a plaque that reads: “On 11 February 1945, against this wall, the bloodthirsty savagery of the Nazi-Fascists, disdainful of the universal laws of justice, killed hostages from the jail at sunrise in a barbarian reprisal.”]]>

Finalmente Romano sei venuto a trovarci.”

Amongst them the “devil”, a partisan who was arrested at that time. The “red devils”, members of the Patriotic Action Groups, were led by Romano (this was his nom de guerre), a man who skirted the line between reality and myth. The Nazis put a huge bounty on his head. He made his companions disguise themselves as fascist militiamen to fake an arrest… An infamous German marshal saw him and exclaimed: “Oh! Romano, you finally came to see us…”.]]>

Headquarters 324 Wing]]> IBCC Digital Archive]]> eng]]> Text]]> Text. Service material]]> MCurnockRM1815605-171114-0770002]]> Royal Air Force]]> Austria]]> Italy]]> Italy--Udine]]> Explains the differences between different kinds of shelters: tunnels;
re-purposed basements beneath substantial buildings; and small, private, concrete structures. Reminisces about heavy bombing which destroyed his home, how they were temporarily housed inside a tunnel and his subsequent life as an evacuee in the countryside. Narrates an episode in which German soldiers showed appreciation for piano music and later came back to enjoy the homely atmosphere of his flat. Describes the conflict as a relatively care-free period: his parents tried in every way to protect him from the horrors of war while farmers provided non-rationed supplies. Bombings were an unavoidable consequence in the state of war.
