Interview with Giuseppe Pirovano
Giuseppe Pirovano remembers wartime memories as schoolboy at Affori, a Milan neighbourhood. Describes daily life in fascist youth organisations, with regimented schooling and political rallies. Mentions childrens plays and pastimes, such as assembling a kick scooter from scrap and recalls fascist militiamen intimidating and jailing dissenters. Recalls conscription dodgers and factory strikes. Gives an account of the 24 October 1942 bombing, which caused limited damage and describes the much more intense one of 10 September 1944. Gives a graphic account of its aftermath, mentioning the death of his father and widespread damage. Describes different shelter types stressing their inadequacy, mentions his experience as evacuee in the Brescia countryside while his father was employed by a manufacturing firm. Recalls Pippo strafing. Gives an account of his experience as trade union activist, describing his post-war career as mechanical engineer. Mentions his involvement in the memorialisation of the bombing war, reflects on the morality of bombing, and stresses how he feels grateful for the sacrifice of those who died.

Interview with Teresa Messali
World War (1939-1945)
Bombing, Aerial
Teresa Messali gives a brief account of her pre-war life with her large family in a farmhouse near Bergamo. She mentions Pippo; describes the pressing need to find shelter during the bombings and stresses how she frequently resorted to ditches. Teresa explains how her father and her younger sister used to dash to the train station during a bombing, looking frantically for something to steal. She recollects the fear of the Germans, how her father narrowly managed to escape roundups and how bomber crews were regarded as enemies as the Germans. Gives a detailed account of the hardship she endured in Milan, particularly her job as nursemaid during which she was often subjected to sexual harassment. Mentions her father getting drunk and beating her mother. Gives a brief account of the happiness after the end of the war and expectations for more serene moments. Compares and contrasts her wartime trials and tribulations with the lifestyle of younger generations.

Interview with Silvano Scarnicchia
Silvano Scarnicchia (b. 1925) recalls his first assignment as a soldier, when he was posted to an anti-aircraft battery defending a bridge in Piacenza. He also recalls a lunch with high-ranking German officers, especially the wartime dessert made of a potato topped with sugar and cinnamon, and singing “Rosamunda” (a popular song) together. Silvano describes his journey to Brescia on a lorry fitted with a wood gas generator. He also mentions how his commanders sent him on several operations because they knew he would not desert.
