Interview with Thomas Edward Noton
Thomas Edward Noton was born in Greenwich on the 4th of April 1923. Upon leaving school he began a toolmaking apprenticeship, however, before finishing the course, Noton decided to join the Royal Air Force at the age of eighteen. He explains why he chose the RAF over the Navy and the reservations of his father, who was wounded in the First World War. After training in London and Canada, Noton explains how his crew was formed at RAF Abingdon and their conversion to flying Halifaxes. On the 18th of June 1944, he joined 78 Squadron, stationed at RAF Breighton, where he completed 35 operations with the same crew and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross. Noton talks about operation procedures, including eating a meal of eggs and bacon before take-off, his flying experiences, and why planned celebrations following their final operation were cancelled. He also talks about joking and spending time with his crew, cycling around York, and attending the cinema or local dances in their free time. Noton then served in India, Indonesia, and Singapore before he was demobilised. He recalls returning home to complete his apprenticeship, marrying his wife, and his career as a production manager. Finally, Noton describes his lifelong friendship with a fellow crew member and his opinion regarding the government’s treatment of Bomber Command.

Mainly records his training and various postings in the Far East as navigator within Transport Command, with references to Singapore (Changi), Kuala Lumpur, Kuching, Saigon, Hong Kong, and Jakarta. Described as “A very reliable and conscientious navigator”, one of his assessments refers to him as an “Ex POW”, and a note on the first page says “1st Log Book lost by RAF 22/5/44”. His final posting was with Bomber Command, 138 squadron at RAF Wyton. Aircraft flown were Oxford, York, Auster, Anson, Harvard, C-47 and Lincoln.

Interview with Robert Boocock
Robert Boocock spent three and a half years in Japanese prisoner of war camps. As a young boy, he had a part time job in delivering ladies’ hats. He was conscripted into the Air Force and initially trained to become a wireless operator. After completing his training, he was posted to 242 Squadron on Hurricanes. He then was sent on a ship from Scotland to Java on the 7th of December 1941. Three weeks after getting to Java, he was taken prisoner by the Japanese and sent to a POW camp. From Java he was then sent to Changi and from there to a coal mine in Japan, where he stayed until the end of the war. He was then taken by train from there to near Nagasaki, on the day the bomb was dropped, and evacuated on an American troopship. He gives a detailed account of his experience. Recalls harsh punishment inflicted by the guards and food shortage. Remembers reading a book to the other prisoners in the camp. After the war, he worked for a chemical company before starting his own business.

Letter to Dennis Raettig from his father
Written at sea. Starts with some humorous banter. Mentions that the first thing he will get when they settle and but a house is a dog. Writes story of obtaining a snakeskin in Brisbane and that he will be up all night going through the strait where there are no lights on a dank weather. He mentions that the captain of the Rampura will get the sack for some unmentioned event. States that he will be in Fremantle in a week and talks about films he has seen or would like to see. He concludes talking about his son's possible future jobs and that no pets are allowed when docking in Australia.
