We are both getting on very well. I am not finding the work [inserted] too [/inserted] hard. I sometimes [deleted] read [/deleted] revise some of the work they did last year. Tomorrow my class plays Stevies [sic] class in cricket, I am playing for my team. I am glad to hear the dogs have made friends. Fancy [deleted] [indecipherable word] [/deleted] Prince coming back to the bungalow by himself, such a small fellow. We were told nothing of going out so of course we must stay in school, but we do not mind. We are given [deleted] too [/deleted] [inserted] very [/inserted] little freedom. [deleted] W [/deleted] Our [deleted] school [/deleted] [inserted] college [/inserted] played a team in cricket and

He is a very nice boy. Let us know how Don & Bill [indecipherable word] behaved in the walk. One of the boys has got a white mouse. We felt very lonely the first two days and after that we were quite [deleted] q [/deleted] alright. Send our love to Bazil. And tell all the servants and Baboo’s and all of them that we are getting on alright and we are still think of everyone. My class boys asked yesterday if we could go skating and we were not even allowed to go with a brother [inserted] so dont [sic] send the skates [/inserted] why I dont [sic] [deleted] know [/deleted] know. We have nearly been in school three weeks. I will be writing to Ronald & Raymond soon. There is another small Paric boy from St, Pauls here. His [deleted] is [/deleted] name is Dangi boy. My darling Mummy and Daddy.
Thanks ever so much for your letter. Now that we know we are staying at Calcutta for two days and buy the things we need it makes us feel much happier. The only disapointing [sic] thing is that you won’t be there. It will teach us to fend for ourselves and it is time we learnt to. Yes there are other boys coming down with us. Some are big, the S.C boys. There is no need to worry as it is the same every here, and the boys are quite allright [sic] alone. Do we travell [sic] 2.nd class by train and 1.st class by steamer, from Calcutta? I think you will need a small trunk as we will not be able to fit the things we buy as well as our own kit. We won’t by [sic] suits going down but coming up, as I think our suits will do for the holidays. How many [deleted] hanckerch [/deleted] hankerchiefs [sic] shall we buy? Please thank Ally for her wishes and send our love to her. We had an Arithmetic [sic] test today, this years [sic] July paper. It was easy as nuts, I have not got my marks yet. I don’t think I got under 60, by comparing answers. Lall wrote again he is going to Calcutta for a time this year, so if we have any spare time we will look him up. Cox wrote
[page break]
a nice long letter today. He is in school [deleted] there [/deleted] in England, and won the Tennis Championship in the school. He is in the B for cricket. He says [deleted] he [/deleted] they had a pleasant voyage and thouroghly [sic] enjoyed themselves. One of the S.C. boys go [sic] pneumonia very badly and then suddenly after two days became normal and is getting much better. I think he will be able to sit for the exam. The lantern lecture that Brother Allen gave us was very fine indeed. The colouring in some of the slides was gorgeous, and it was most interesting too. The Cambridge boys get extra [inserted] food [/inserted] in a few days. I hope you got the letter wishing you for your birthday. This is my fourth letter to you this week, that is Sunday to Sunday, so no more news today, with lots of love and kisses from your loving son

My darling Mummy and Daddy.
Thanks awfully for your letter. I made a mistake about the football. My class lost against the XB 3-1, and the XB beat Steve’s class 1-0. Please let us know wether [sic] to send you a list or not. We have been having Mechanics papers the last two days and tonight we will do the July paper. I will let you [deleted] indecipherable word [/deleted] know what I get. I am getting on well in music now. I have learnt four pieces and am on my fifth and I have learnt four duets. I am revising everything now so you need not worry about my working. There are only ten days left for the exam. The cambridge picnic is on the 31st of [deleted] this [/deleted] [inserted] next [/inserted] month. It is not very cold now. Certainly nothing like Darjeeling. The winter line is beautifully clear now a days [sic]. Do you remember seeing it when you were here? It is a big circular horizon [deleted] [undecipherable] [/deleted] below which [deleted] in [/deleted] everything is a dark blue hue.
[page break]
Is there still water on the tennis court? I hope not as it will need some time to get into shape. I am playing for my class in the Individual championship. Two boys from each class enter for singles and two pairs of doubles. I am playing in both. I play one of Steve’s chums. He is very good indeed. But I will play my hardest against him. There are cups for the winners. What a shame that creeper was spoilt. I hope the Garden turns out as good as usual. Especially the sweet peas, [underlined] and ordinary peas [/underlined]. No more news today, with lots of love and kisses God bless and keep you both for us
your loving son [underlined] David [/underlined].

My darling Mummy and Daddy.
Thanks awfully for your letters. We went for our Cambridge picnic today and had a jolly good time. There was only one bad thing and that was going in the bus, I got terribly sick; that’s very funny as I do not usually get sick. We had the prize distribution today, and Steve got a nice cup for the [deleted] [undecipherable] [/deleted] cricket. We will not write to Calcutta as Daddy may have gone back when the letter reaches. I am glad to hear that you [deleted] can [/deleted] are staying with Aunty [deleted] indecipherable letter [/deleted] Phyl. It will be so much better than being alone. [deleted] Their [/deleted] There is no time to finish the tennis tournaments so I don’t know what will happen. We are taking the Billi [?] vaccine and tomorrow will be our last day. We will send you that list at Cambridge week time as Steve can look up what we need. We will buy all our clothes and rackets by ourselves our matron will get us all sorts of siezes [sic]. I will
[page break]
write to Daddy as you say he does not know when he will return. I think P.D.C is higher than St. Pauls, isn’t it? No Mum I won’t be a bit cocksure. Fancy finding an egg like that. How foolish of the bird not to lay it in a more convenient place. I am glad to hear the dogs are getting on nicely. I am sorry to hear that those wretched dogs won’t make up. We are dying to come home and see the dogs and cinders as she is a new addition to the family, and everybody else. How the days have flown only a fortnight and we go home. Shall we travel under age from Calcutta? I think we might. I got a pair of boots made by the College Moche [?] as I needed a pair. No more news today with lots of love and kisses, God bless and keep you both for us your loving son

My own darling Dad.
Thanks ever so much for your letter and all your news. Steve and I will stand a sporting chance in the senior doubles. We will both do our best to suceed [sic] in life and repay you for all you have done for us.
The inter-class tennis tournament has begun, my class don’t stand much of a chance. In the “A” Singles against the IX best of 13 games. I lost to Fosbury 7-1. He is dash good and I beat Brown 7-6. This evening we are playing the Specials so I play Steve and then Fardoonji. Not knowing that we were playing I played the whole of this morning, anyway I will do my best. I dont [sic] know when the individual playing will commence. I dont [sic] play games like hockey at present because I have a slight rupture.
There are two very important things for me to tell you. No. 1. If you possibly can please cancel that boat-train stuff, so that we can go into Bombay a day or two
[page break]
earlier and see our boy friends. No. 2. Tell Roy, the tennis shop fellow that he will have the pleasure of interviewing Steve and myself. You know that gut he put on my racket for which he charge Rs 10. Well it is only [deleted] indecipherable word [/deleted] cheap country gut not worth even Rs 4. How we found out [deleted] was [/deleted] was that Steve is having it strung on his racket and the man said it is cheap Indian gut.
We have now really settled down [missing word] hard work. We went across to Mum last evening and had a good feed. Mum was not too well but now that she has fed herself up a bit she is really looking fine again. We [inserted] have [/inserted] had a spot of rain lately and it has turned quite cold. Well no more news to-day. God bless & keep you for us.
With lots of love and kisses from
your loving son

NAINI TAL
12th October 1936.
My own darling Dad.
Thanks ever so much for your letter and all your news. We have both got back from camp safe and sound and as fit as ever owing to the early morning P.T. and the marching etc. We had a really grand time in camp and were all very sorry to leave.
I went to camp with Rs10 and returned with Rs9. of course I received Rs5 blue lights which enables you to buy stuff from the Canteen and I made Rs5 through – careful speculation!
In the Sports we got 7 cups not 8, but in camp the governor distributed the shooting prizes. I got a cup for .22 shooting I came first in it in all schools and a second for snap shooting and a cup [deleted] for [/deleted] as I was in the Langley cup which we won; So we are bringing home 10 cups this year, [deleted] Qite [/deleted] quite a haul. We won the Langley Cup and the M.P. Shield. Sherwood won the Alison Cup and P.S.C. the Cadet shield. So we have once more come off best. We have won the M.P.
[page break]
shield for the last six years.
Now that the Sports and camp are over I will study my hardest and try and do well in the Lessons. In Camp the doctor had an alsation and a great dane and the [indecipherable] which he had from a pup would do anything he told, to walk on the left of the road, to knock a person down, to jump over the other dog and they even play tug o war. It was terribly cold in camp and we have all got colds.
I have been playing games lately and I am much better for it. Thank God my hand does not hinder me [deleted] a [/deleted] in any way. The Inter-class tournaments are about to begin. Probably the tennis will also be on soon. Steve and I are playing together in the Senior Doubles and will do our best. We stand a sporting chance. Well no more news to-day. God bless and keep you for us. With lots of love and kisses from your
Loving son
David.

St. Josephs College
Naini Tal,
Sept. 28th 1936.
My own darling Daddy.
Thank you ever so much for your letter and all your news. We were very lucky and had a bright day for the sports. Though it poured heavily till about an hour before the concert and cleared up within about half an hour of it there was a big crowd present and the concert was a great succes [sic] on all three nights and especially so on the last night the one on which the people from town. Mummy enjoyed it thoroughly and much preferred it to last years one. After it of course we had the usual feed and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. We both did fairly well at sports. I got a 3rd for long jump, the half mile and the 220 yds that’s three cups and one for the [deleted] College rel [/deleted] open relay. I was in the College team, two 220’s and [deleted] 2 [/deleted] two 440’s. Steve got a cup for the pluckiest player, one for inter-class relay and the other for Tug-o-War. Steve’s Class beat my class in [inserted] the [/inserted] relay by less than a yard and we would have won only for the fact that one of our good runners was hurt and
[page break]
unable to run. Anyway we got [deleted] three [/deleted] seven cups between us which is fairly good. We have had a fine sports holiday. On Friday evening we went to the flicks and saw “Moscow Nights” which was quite good, having been for a ride in the morning. On Saturday we went skating in the morning, to the matinee in the afternoon, “Shirly Temple in The Littlest Rebel” which was very fine indeed and then to Vals. Sunday was ruined of rain. It rained from morning to evening without a break, so we only went skating. We were hoping for a holiday on Monday, but were not destined to get one.
I believe our College has done fairly well in the shooting, but we know nothing much at the present beyond the fact that we did the best where carrying off cups were concerned. Dad the next Time you see Mr Joseph please tell him I am very sorry for not writing, and will do so the first opportunity I get.
You will probably be charged for our spikes and running pants and tennis shoes but the cups make up for that, Steves [sic] cup for the pluckiest player cost Rs 21. It is very well cut. I have yet to get another prize for that 22 shooting, so we had a bigger haul than last year. Well no more news today, God bless & keep you for us, with lots of love and kisses from your loving son [underlined] David [/underlined]

ST. JOSEPH’S COLLEGE
NAINI TAL.
17th August. 1936.
My own darling Daddy.
Thanks ever so much for your letters and all your news. I was wondering how it was that I did not see the picture of our team in the Statesman, but our’s is the Delhi edition. Please God you won’t fade out for a long time and we can repay you for all you have done for us. The Olympic results this year are splendid. I read the account of the fight between Gunboat Jack and Freeman.
Yesterday was a holiday as it was a feast day and we were allowed out. We went for a swim in the morning and to the Matinee in the afternoon. The piece was Eddie Cantor in strike me pink; it was jolly good. In the evening we went to Vals and had quite a nice, though not so jolly as the last Saturday. A lady won the jackpot there with Rs 85 in it rather a big one.
The second hockey tournament has begun. Our “A” have drawn a bye and are in the semi-finals where they meet some
[page break]
Detachment team who beat P.S.C. “A” 3-1. This tommy team is however more name than anything else. Our “B” were knocked by the Band “A” 8-1. We lost only because we did not have our second strongest team out and because of funking and Brother Colagues had choice of the team. They were inexperienced. It was a crime not to have entered a “B” in the first tournament, it would have given us a double chance. The first match of our “B” against the hard “A” (3-1) the first goal our goalkeeper instead of kicking out funked & turned & the opposing forward just tapped the ball into an open goal.
We have not had much rain this month, only six inches so far; just as well as we have had more than our fair share of it so far. Well no more news today, with lots of love and kisses from your loving son

My own darling Daddy.
Thanks ever so much for your letter and all your news. It will be fine fun going for launch drives. We had 46” of rain this last month and the rainfall for the year so far is 87”.
I got into a spot of trouble the other day but it was [deleted] not [/deleted] [inserted] nothing [/inserted] much. I was trotting on the lower Mall, which is meant for horses and a dash [indecipherable word] with a tin [indecipherable word] on his head, suddenly came infront [sic] of me, so I pushed the [indecipherable word] and he fell but I did not go over him. I gave him a shout and went on. The owner went to the police and the Police inspector & Sergeant were very decent to me; they chatted about our teams and all that. They compromised the case and I had to pay Rs10. Brother Connelly was very decent and would not let me pay but payed himself. The matter is finished now.
We had the exhibition match
[page break]
against the Command on Thursday, and we beat them 2-1, but it was too late. We had two penalties one of which we missed. When there was a few seconds left the wing centred and Steve headed it in (the second goal) and the [deleted] indecipherable word [/deleted] boys took him off on their shoulders, The match was not as lively as the one against the Band “A”. During the game Steve got a knock on his knee and has been at Stone cross for a couple of days, but it is thank god getting on now.
The other day I [deleted] was [/deleted] read in the papers about the Indian airforce and from that it seems very insignificant. Anyhow if you let me know how an officer rises in the next few years from a flight Lieutenant and what the pay is. I will make up my mind. Well no more news today, God bless and keep you for us, with lots of love and kisses from your loving son
[underlined] David. [/underlined]
[underlined] P.S. [/underlined] I am taking a small part in the concert, there being only two [underlined] really [/underlined] long parts which two tall fellows are acting.

My own darling Daddy.
Thanks ever so much for your letter and all your news. We have had a very fine last Saturday and Sunday. I was not in time for the [indecipherable] as I was stuck in for French but afterwards in the evening we went to Vals and had a jolly good time. We had had some good luck at the jack pot machine and won a few rupees to the good. After the dancing Mum wanted to come away without having any more tries at the jack pot, but I said no and Steve & I put in 8 annas each and bought four tokens. With that [deleted] we [/deleted] I got the Jack Pot Rs29 4 annas and gave Steve R7 [deleted] Mum [/deleted] Mum 7 Mavis 7 and I 7. The next day we lost a little of it but are still well to the good.
The match against the Band “A” and the College was magnificent. We beat them 4 – 2, Steve played a fine game. You must have seen his name in the papers as one of the scorers. At half time they were leading [deleted] 3- [/deleted] 2 – 1 and our two [indecipherable] were [indecipherable]. We gave them
[page break]
a good yell and the Band trying to play [deleted] unfl [/deleted] rough set our fellows going and we knocked them all over the show even little Steve and in the end gave them a good hiding. We play the Command “A” in an exhibition match on thursday, having lost the tournament by one point.
We have had heavy rain this month. Thirty inches so far. Mum gets the papers for us every day now, so that we are well in touch with all the news. Brother Connolly likes the Review of Reviews very much and says you could not have given him a book he likes better. My hand is getting on beautifully and the only thing that will put it out now will be if I fall on it again. After a month there should be no fear of that even. Well no more news today, God bless and keep you for us, with lots of love and kisses from your loving son
David.

My own darling Daddy.
Thanks ever so much for your letter and all your news. Now that Mr. Furguson has come back work will be much easier for you. My height is 5 foot 5 inches and my wt. is 9 stine. I don’t know about Steve. Are you really growing half an inch a month?
While playing football the other day I was accidently tripped and fractured a bone in my hand. I went to Ramsay and had it attended to. It is getting on well. [deleted] but [/deleted] There is nothing to worry about. After a couple of months I will be able to play all games but I will not be able to box for a year or so.
Our “A” team played P.S.C “A” yesterday. We have at last broken our unlucky spell. We beat them 4 – 3. The game was a very fine one. The Command “A” and the Band “A”
[page break]
drew 2 – 2 so we are at present standing first in the league. We still however have to play the two best teams.
I actually passed in the French Test with 42. I came 5th out of 9 boys. The French Mistress had corrected three out of the four of my questions and I had got only 22 and she was bluffing herself that I had failed but in the fourth question Composition I got 20 out of 25. The highest marks were 67. Well no more news to-day, God bless & keep you for us. With lots of love and kisses from your loving son

My own darling Daddy.
Thanks ever so much for your letter. [deleted]In[/deleted] In spite of all the efforts the crop is turning out to be a big one. Will that be good for the firm or bad? Steve is in stonecross with a bad throat but it is nothing to worry about.
I played in the orchestra to-day and managed much better than the last time. If I play in it for a few days I will be O.K. I only missed 2 lessons two week out of 40.
Our “A” team played the Golden Hub in the semifinals. After extra time the match was a draw 2 – 2 so there will be a replay. The refereries[sic] were cheating very badly, we were winning till 15 secs before time up they score an equaliser. The man who shot was right in the goal mouth and Mr. Lewty did not bother to tackle him. Everyone was furious. Our forwards missed 2 easy shots in the first five minutes. However they played an excellent game. The finals of the tournament and the subsidory[sic] one will be played on the same day.
[page break]
Dave – 1936
We have begun swimming. The water is not too cold and we enjoy ourselves. We have also [deleted] at [/deleted] begun sticking in for an hour on Sundays and doing some work on non-study nights. I went out skating on Sunday and then came back to school.
The inspector is up in Naini but he has not been [deleted] to us [/deleted] here yet. Brother Colagne is expected here any day. We saw the [indecipherable] some time ago and had a long chat.
We are both just writing an ordinary letter to Aunty Maisie and Uncle Bob thanking them and saying how we are getting on at school. A number of the boys are going up for the Police. I think the air-force will suit me best. Steve would like to go up for doctoring. Well no more news today, God bless and keep you for us with lots of love and kisses

My own darling Daddy.
Thanks ever so much for your letter and the newspaper cuttings. They are most interesting. Yes thank God the Gowdowns were not burnt. I am glad to hear that there was not much jute[sic] burnt[deleted]d[/deleted]. I arrived safely from camp yesterday, after having a fine time. If we had a month of camp we would all come back strong men. While giving in rifles one of the boys rifles fell straight on my foot so I am not playing games for a few days. It was lucky that I had army [deleted]f[/deleted] boots on. [deleted] I w[/deleted] we saw Mummy today and had a long chat. Steve’s arm does not effect him in the least while playing tennis. In fact he is playing a much harder game now.
[page break]
I won a [indecipherable] in camp in one of the shooting competitions and was done out of one in another. I didn’t half curse the adjutant. Hockey has begun again. The Leslie Tournament (Hockey), Interclass begins on Sunday. I hope my class does something. We have had no more rain but it is turning quite cold now. The water in the morning is awful.
Never mind Dad you won’t be lonely much longer please God, as there are less than 60 days left.
My class played the xth[sic] in cricket this morning. We made less than 50 all out and they are still below us for six wickets. I made a duck. Well no more news today. God bless & keep you both for us.with lots of love & kisses from your loving son.
David.

Letter from David Boldy to his father with general conversation about attending St. Joseph’s College, Naini Tal.
Thanks were given for newspaper clippings his father sends. School camp has just finished and he won one of the shooting competitions, prize being one rupee. Had a gun dropped on his foot but all okay. Mother and Steve are both well. Weather is turning very cold.

My own darling Daddy.
Thanks ever so much for your letter. Well nearly everything is over now except camp. We set out for Bhawali on the 6th. I did not do to badly in the sports. I came 2nd in the half-mile and got a nice cup. My class won the inter-class relay so I got a medal also and a cup for football. Not at all bad. Steve [deleted] go [/deleted] won a medal for coming 2nd in place kicking. I will get my shooting medals on prize giving day. The sports were a sucess.[sic] We had a fine time during the holidays. Thank goodness it did not

Rain. There was quite a crowd of [indecipherable] boys at Jocksley Hall So we had a fine time. We have learnt a couple of very amusing drawing room jokes. The rink has been refloored and is quite nice now. I also went horse riding. I was still quite at home in the saddle. I did quite well in the last series of tests. I came 9th. That’s gone up two places from the [deleted] la [/deleted] first series. I lost in the boxing to one of my class boys. It was hardly a fight as [deleted] none [/deleted] neither of us went at it. The boxing has been very badly arranged and when boys of the same class come together, especially friends, there is hardly a fight. It has turned very cold these last few

days.
I recieved [sic] a letter from Lall Stoult, one of my old class fellows broke the record in his class for high jump. He did 5ft 3ins. he will most probably do much better in a couple of years as he is still young. Mummy has gone into Bhawali to-day with Doris Lucas and another student. In the end [obscured] person did not turn up at Mrs Hearness but [deleted] is [/deleted] it is much jollier at Jocksley Hall as there are people of our own [indecipherable] there.
Well no more news today
God bless & keep you & Mummy for us with lots of love & kisses from your loving son David.

My own darling Daddy.
Thanks ever so much for your letter. No dad we [deleted] have [/deleted] had never seen Queen Christina before. You must be thinking of Katherine the Great. I would [deleted] much [/deleted] prefer to take part in the drill than play for it. So would Mummy prefer that but I suppose I will have to play. Steve’s arm is definitely better. I heard from Lall the other day. He is getting on well and hopes to pass the G.C. We will most probably go out with Mummy. We played the X [underlined] th [/underlined] A and beat them 2-0. Bobby scored the first and I headed in the second. Our [deleted] be [/deleted] “B” won the semi-final and lost to the X B in the final. 1-0. Here we had got so far ahead that we could not be beaten even if we lost the “A” finals. We played the “A” final and after extra time the score was 3-3.
[page break]
So to finish off the match we tossed up as to who had won. The specials won the toss. The cups are beauties but there are not enough so from our whole class we have picked the teams to play against each other for the cups. My team has drawn a by and is in the final. The cups are well worth winning. I don’t know if I will be able to play for the orchestra as it will clash with the concert. We have had a fine spell of fair whether [sic]. Not a drop of rain for about a week. But it is threatening now to spoil our last Saturday. We are going to see to Chow Chin Chow [sic] today with Mummy. Mummy knows that I am acting as the last time I went out I had to be up in time for concert practice. Well no more news today. God bless and keep you for us. With lots of love & kisses from your
loving son

My own darling Daddy.
Thanks ever so much for your nice letter. Both Steve and I played for the orchestra today. It was a bit difficult being our first time, but we shall soon get into it. The piano is scarcely heard so it doesn’t matter much. [deleted] It [/deleted] The piano is put in so as to complete the harmony or something like that. We saw Mummy on Wednesday evening and last evening I accompanied her to the Capitol and then came back to the College boys. I had my first injection day before yesterday. My arm was a bit painful and didn’t feel too bright, but it did not knock me out. Steve will go soon. His arm is ever so much better. In fact it is very nearly normal. In the inter class tournament my class is still a few points behing [sic] the leading
[page break]
one, but we hope to catch up soon. The second football [deleted] team [/deleted] tournament has begun. P.S.C. “A.” beat a Ranicat team 3-0 and our “A” beat the Command “B” 12-0. With a little luck we might win this tournament. We have not [deleted] hear [/deleted] entered a “B” team this tournament as it would be useless to do so. I was very surprised to hear from Mummy that I had a bad report, especially as I have worked and seldom missed my lessons. The marks of the whole class were low. The boy came first only got two honours one of which was Urdu and that the Urdu master corrected. He got one or two 60’s and 50’s and the rest in the 40’s. I don’t know how I did so badly in Latin considering there were only two questions and I got one almost completely right by heart from the book. Mummy will explain why the marks are so low. Well no more news today. God bless & keep you for us. With lots of Love & kisses
from your loving son

My own darling Daddy.
Thanks ever so much for your nice letter. Steve is being careful of his arm so there is no need to worry. Cricket has stopped on account of the rain. I will be careful in future and will not get into trouble. This was my first row so its nothing. I have already paid up the four rupees from my own savings and will leave it at that as Mummy is spending a lot on us. I have already learnt my first [deleted word] concert piece and must now become perfect at it so as to be able to play it fast. Mummy came and saw us last evening before we went out. She gave us a surprise for not only was my pullover ready but also Steve’s. They both look very nice and fit us perfectly. Poor Steve had an apsis [sic] under one of his eye teeth. He had the tooth out and the apsis [sic] lanced. He is quite allright [sic] now except for a slight
[page break]
swelling which is only to be expected.
On Wednesday our “B” lost to the Command 5-1. And last evening they lost P.S.C. “A” 3-0. That’s good for them. Our “A” beat the Ghouska’s last evening 5-1. Our goalkeeper was missing as he had a dislocated ankle. We had a Latin Test yesterday. I do not think I did badly. I am getting on well in class, music and games. The other day we had a terrific downpour for a few hours. Our big field was simply flooded with water. In the interclass tournament my class is second. We are only three points behind the leading class. We will soon be having the knockouts. These are very exciting and rough. No more news today with lots of love and kisses God bless & keep you for us your loving

My darling Daddy.
Thanks ever so much for your nice long letter. I am glad to hear old Don came back. He must have been galavanting. I thought as much Bill would be a match for any of the dogs at Narsingdi. We went out with Mummy for the last Saturday and stayed at the Grand Hotel as Mrs Hearne’s was full up. I prefer Mrs Hearne’s. We had a fine time. The name of the College concert this year is, “The New Boy.” It is quite good and very witty at parts. I will most probably be acting. Please don’t tell Mummy a word about it, as it [deleted] shall [/deleted] will give her a surprise. On Thursday we went to All Saints College concert. It was very good. Mummy acted very well. Nearly everyone said she acted best. Till the evening it was a variety entertainment and then a play
[page break]
was acted, [deleted word] called “ Pedro the Torreador.” The band won this football tournament. They played an exhibition match with the Command last evening and beat them 4-1. The second tournament drawings are out and we play Command “B” first. [deleted] We [/deleted] We are only entering one team. My class teams are together now equal with the VIII and we are both coming first. This interclass tournament continues till the end of this month. A boxing trainer has come to the College and we are having training. So our Boys should do better in the camp boxing this year.
I forgot to say we went to the range some time ago to fire our course. I don’t know how much I [deleted] got [/deleted] scored but I haven’t done badly. I came 11.[underlined] th [/underlined] in class out of 24 boys. That’s not too bad. No more news today. God bless and keep for us. With lots
of love and kisses from
your loving son

My own darling Daddy.
Thanks ever so much for your letter. I am glad to hear you have settled down now. How is your leg getting on? I hope it is much better. The man Steve goes to for his electric treatment says it will be quite allright [sic] for [deleted word] him to play cricket. In fact he says it will do it good. Any way he wont [sic] play till we hear from you again. We saw Mummy yesterday when we went for a walk. She went to the “Barretts of Wimpol [sic] Street” after seeing us. She is also coming up to see us today. We read Mummy’s story in the Odd Moment magazine and it was quite good. We have been having our quarterlies these last few days but have not yet had our marks. French is the only paper that has been marked so far. I got 36 for it. That’s not bad considering I’ve only done
[page break]
it for one year. Our A team played the band A and lost 2-0. We had terrible luck. We missed about four or five sure goals. We still have a chance if the band lose a match. I am learning piece for the orchestra and will most probably play for the concert (if I am able) which will take place during the sports. I will try hard to get in. Steve is also playing. Since Steve has begun the electric treatment again his arm has got much better. D.V. he ought to soon have the normal use of it again. The weather here is not so bad either. But the rain is an [deleted] d [/deleted] awful nuisance sometimes. Well no more news today, God bless and keep you for us

My own Darling Daddy.
Thanks ever so much for your letter and all the news. Many happy returns of the day. [Deleted word] God bless and keep you for us. So Bill got the better of the fight. Its very surprising as the other dog is so much heavier. I am glad to hear you are nearly settled down now. Steve is being careful of his arm. He is playing cricket but not hockey or foot-ball. The rains have broken at last. We have nothing but rain now. We are going to the convent concert tomorrow. Our B beat P.S.C. B 2-1 last saturday. This saturday our A plays the “Reserve Police”. The matches of this tournament are league. Monday was a holiday for Brother Connelly’s feast. We went out with Mummy on Sunday and
[page break]
and went through Government house grounds. We also went skating. Mummy came to see us this evening and then went to the convent concert. At present we are having [inserted] an [/inserted] interclass foot-ball tournament. Each [deleted word] class entering an A and B team. So far my class has won all its matches A & B. I play for the A and am Captain of the B. That is my class A and B. [deleted word] Swimming is quite enjoyable now as the water is much warmer. My class played the VII in the cricket tournament and beat them by 7 runs even though our Captain was not playing. I only made 9 runs and was then caught. Just as I was getting set. No more news today [deleted word] God bless & keep you for us with lots of love and
kisses from your
loving son

My own darling Daddy.
I am glad to hear you arrived [deleted] saft [/deleted] safely. Thanks very much for the nice time you gave us when you were up here. We were given a holiday on Friday for winning the cup, but we were not allowed out. We went for a swim on Friday and today. The water has become much warmer and we can enjoy our swims now. In the last few days two Nuns in the convent have died. We have started football. [deleted] we [/deleted] My class played the VII today [inserted] (in cricket). [/inserted] We only finished one innings each. We were 100 all out and they were 84 including 10 runs start. I took three wickets today in five overs. Mummy came and saw us for a few minutes today. Dont [sic] forget to keep the dogs. I suppose you will have to give Bill away, but keep the others. There have been a few fires on the hills since you left. We have not been told
[page break]
about having to be inoculated so we will ask the nurse as she has most probably been told. We saw the regatta last evening. It was a hopeless show from beginning to end. There is no concert for the Principal’s feast this year as it takes too much trouble getting it up. We will have one during the sports holidays. We have not so strong a football team this year as last year’s but there aren’t any really strong teams up this year. The band is supposed to be good. They are the only team we ought to find hard to beat. Well no more news today as I have to play football. God bless & keep you for us with love & kisses from your loving son

My own darling Daddy.
Thanks very much for your letter and the fruits which Mummy brought me. Mummy comes to see me often. She came today and we chatted for a long time. I am so glad to hear Stevie is progressing favourably Thank God for it. Mummy got a letter from the nurse who took Steve down and she says that he will be able to play games in six months. I am working very hard now. We all thought at home that I had just managed to pass the S.C. Well I passed with credit. That is not so bad is it? I passed three subjects with good and four with credit. I only failed in two subjects out of sixteen. The three goods were Arithmetic, Algebra and Geometry. You will soon get my detailed results. Anyway I am sending you a copy as I

I played for Ireland. We lost 4-2 after leading [indecipherable word] 2-0. This time it was foot-ball. It is beautifully warm this year. Last it was uncomfortably cold. If you come up with Steve you will be here for the Summer which is about the best in the year. Mummy says I had better not take up any exams in music but [indecipherable word] just learn so as I will be able to play well. My details are as follows.
