Mr. D. BOLDY served in this Unit with effect from 10-9-34 to 9-9-36 as a Cadet and from 10-9-36 to 24-4-1937 as an Active Member
During his service in both ranks I have always found him smart, Keen, and intelligent member.
He was far above the average College Student and is an exceptionally good rifle shot.

My darling Mummy and Daddy.
Thanks for your letters. I have lots of news today. Davey has been very nice to us, she took us to the pictures today, and then to Vals [sic], and then we rode up. She says to send her love to you. She will not be coming back next, but is going to Poona, isn’t that a shame? The picture was on Friday the 13th. We enjoyed it very much. I suppose you must remember Miss Lawson, well she is getting married next year. I think she was the music teacher. In any case it would be much [deleted] nicer [/deleted] [inserted] better [/inserted] for you to come to Naini as you will be with us. I am glad to hear you have got Dons [sic] pup and that she is very sweet. Fancy Don & Bill not liking her at all, but dog’s [sic] always hate pups. So Prince has become very friendly with her. I am so sorry to hear about poor old aunty Phyl. The second round of the Leslie tournament has begun. My class lost against Steve [sic] class this time 2-0, because
[page break]
two of our men were missing as they were hurt. I have not lost [deleted] ed [/deleted] any of my tennis matches yet. I am glad to hear the young eve gave two lambs, there must be quite a lot now.
I think Cinders is a jolly fine name for the Pup, especialy [sic] as she is smoky’s. [deleted] T [/deleted] Yes Mum I will work very hard now, as there is only a month left. We had a Caesar Test and I got 30 on 50, and 38% for Trignometry [sic]. I should have done much better in the Trig, I don’t know how I got such a little. No, the new Governor has not arrived yet I suppose he will be coming soon. I hope poor old Bill gets well soon. Give our love to Niersres . I heard from Lall again, they have just finished their pujahs. My class is playing the Specials [deleted] indecipherable letter [/deleted] in cricket tomorrow. It is knockouts. Steve’s class won their match against the X. Steve made 2nd highest score 1st inns, and highest score 2 inns. No more news today, with lots of love & kisses
from your loving son

My darling Mummy and Daddy,
Thanks for your letter. The first round of the Leslie Cup has begun. My class has played against the X, IX, XB, we lost against the [deleted] indecipherable letter [/deleted] XA 9-0, but beat the IX, XB, 3-0, 4-2. I played a IX standard boy in this tennis cup, but we only got through [deleted] indecipherable letter [/deleted] four games and it was time up as some boys had played before us. I was winning
3-1. And against a X boy he beat me 6-1, then I beat him 6-1, and the [indecipherable word] third set the score is 2-2 and we will finish it later. Steve won both his matches. The IX upwards are -30. Please send us some toothbrushes. I forgot to answer in one of you letters if either of us dropped our clubs, well any way neither of us did. Steve was right in from [sic] but did not make any mistakes. I went skating today and am getting on well. I am getting on in Music and Class, and will try very hard. There is only about a month and a half left for the exams. This year the exams
[page break]
have been changed. There are no more honours. And all the subjects have been arranged in four groups. It is compulsory to pass in one of each of the groups. The [deleted] Col [/deleted] Culhame Cup Tournament (Cricket) is beggining [sic] tomorrow. It is knockouts. I think we are playing the specials. I am glad to hear the dogs are more friendly. I wish they would make proper friends. How is the baby airdale getting on. Don’t forget to train her well. Have you given her a name yet? It gave two pictures of St. Pauls Sports in the newspaper, one of the visitors childrens race and one of the tug-o-war. I suppose you must have seen [deleted] it [/deleted] them. Please send me Rs 2-8 as I have to pay a rupee for Masses, a ruppee [sic] for the cambridge picnic and a ruppee for the class masters present. Never mind about the balance 8 as [deleted] [undecipherable word] [/deleted] as I have paid some up already. No more news today with lots of love and kisses from your loving

My darling Mummy and Daddy.
Thanks for your letters. Its a lucky thing that cobra was discovered, [deleted] indecipherable letter [/deleted] it would have been very dangerous with 15 of them around the place. I arrived from camp yesterday, safe and sound, and I had a good time. We had P.T early in the morning then [inserted] a [/inserted] Manover [sic] [deleted] s [/deleted] for about 3 hrs and 1/2 an hour parade at 3. We were free the rest of the time. [deleted] indecipherable letter [/deleted] We were allowed except to places out of bounds. I am glad to hear there are three more new lambs. I heard from Lall today and he has just finished some exams, and they are practicing for the sports. That blighter Ronald has not written for a very long time.
[deleted] Steve’s class, [/deleted] Most of the classes came for a picnic [deleted] t [/deleted] to Blowali [sic] on Thursday. And Steve came as well. There was parade when he came so I could not
[page break]
speak to him, but only waved out.
We are having practice matches for the inter class tournaments now. The march up from Camp was quite stiff. It was very cold [deleted] at camp [/deleted] in the mornings at camp. There was [inserted] interschool [/inserted] boxing but no tournament as other years. My weight stripped is 7 stone 13lbs. I hope the seeds are a sucess, [sic] dont forget to [deleted] put [/deleted] sow, lettuce, radish, peas, and [underlined] spring unions [sic] [/underlined]. I am glad to hear Dons wound is nearly allright, [sic] I hope they won’t fight any more.
We might finish our match with the 9th today. Counting our 2nd innings handicap, they are beating us by 7 runs so it ought [deleted] be [/deleted] to be quite exciting.
No more news today, with lots of love and kisses from your loving son

My darling Mummy and Daddy.
Thanks very much for the letters and money. Sorry for not writing on Thursday, but we had heats. I entered for most [deleted] things [/deleted] events but did not come in anywhere. We went to the range the other. [sic] [deleted] I [/deleted] day, I did not do to [sic] badly. Yesterday was the inter [deleted] cup [/deleted] school cup shooting.
Sherwood beat us in the first cup, and we beat them in the other two. P.S.C. has not fired yet. The VIII played the IX yesterday. They made 83 all out, and we were 60 all out, I made top score for my side, 19. We have not played the second innings yet. It will be very exciting. Our A are playing down at the flats today.
We are still having test now. We had Arithmetic last night and it was quite easy. I am enclosing the nestles pictures and wrappers. Yes we want the female pup of smoky’s.
[page break]
The same music mistress teaches Steve and me. I am getting on quite well in music now, and I don’t mind it at all. Yes the camp is in Bowali as usual, and I will give old Mrs. Cotton a look in. I won’t get up to any tricks in camp so you need not worry. Poor old Don must have had a bad bite for it to last so long. The days are fine and sunny now. The final heats are on [deleted] now [/deleted] today. I am entering in the half mile, I won’t stand a chance, but I am just entering for fun. The College [deleted] t [/deleted] are having the Sports [sic] concert on Monday, tuesday and wednessday [sic].
No more news today, with lots of love and Kisses from your loving son

My darling Mummy and Daddy. [deleted] Tha [/deleted]
Thanks for the nice long letters. I am glad to hear the dogs are getting on well. We went for a swim today and had a fine time. We tried swallow dives and what not. I tried the dead mans dive. that is headfirst with hands and I nearly turned a sumersalt [sic] in the water.
We leave our letter open on the desk and the class brother reads them and then closes them. Your letters to us are never opened or read by anyone.
The college supply [deleted] trews [/deleted] [inserted] vests [/inserted] to everyone every year. So you need not bother about them, (for club drilling I mean.) We dont [sic] know anything more about the Downes. I am glad to hear Nicholas [?] has got a job. Rs 75 a month is better than nothing. I am glad to hear Mrs. Ardall is much better.
The English is quite good. I will reply soon.
[deleted] An [/deleted] A European gave a conjuring show yesterday. It was very good. He rubbed out a line blind folded and stopped at letters written and called out what they were. Then boys wrote questions on a piece of paper and one
[page break]
of the boys read them to himself and he said (conjurer) what the questions were and gave answers. One question was Does my girl love me? He asked two boys to take a number from 1-15 and he said three. So the conjurer says two girls how can I tell you until I know which you mean. We all roared with laughter and then the show was stopped because it was getting late. There were two tricks left. One was to make milk float from a jug to a glass some distance away. He put some rise [?] in a [deleted] vase [/deleted] lota and then after a few minutes brought out water.
P.S.C are playing the band today. It is the finals of this tournament. I heard from Lall today. Havelock won the Cricket and football cup & Hockey has just begun. I fired 21 shots today with a 3.03. We are going to the Range on the 16th, 17th 18th We will fire 75 rounds every day. The rain is an awful nuisance here.
If we go to England will you make our home with Aunty Maisie? No more news, today.
With love David.

Dear Mrs. Boldy,
Thank you for your letter. Needless to say, I am very, very sorry that you are taking the boys away. However, the decision had to be yours, and I must bow to the inevitable. I can only wish them both every happiness and success in their new school at Naini Tal. I am very glad Stephen managed to pass his Junior whilst he was here with us.
I am sending on the Transfer Certificates herewith as I promised.
With kindest regards and every good wish,
Yours sincerely

My darling Mummy and Daddy.
Thanks awfully for your letters. We are glad to hear you are well, and we are the same. Send our love back to Nierses. Alright Steve doesn’t mind if he stays up for me. Your [sic] right about the groans but I think it is best as it will really be quite a big saving. We don’t really mind much. Please let us know exactly what we have to do, as how long we stay in Calcutta and if any one is meeting us or anything like that. And give us a list of what we have to buy as tennis rackets, shoes etc. We don’t need shirts or suits. I am glad to hear the season was not too bad. This arangement [sic] is awkward but it certainly does save a lot. And after all we are quite big enough to look after ourselves. But let us know what we have to do, as it will be so much easier for us. I hope you recieved [sic] my last weeks letter as you did not mention anything about Davey. It was very good of her to take us out wasn’t it? She remarked that she liked you awfully. I will try very hard. God bless and keep you
with love from us both

My darling Mummy and Daddy.
Thanks for your letter. We went for our Annual picnic today not to Kilbury but to the Chalbé, [?] as the barometer registered that there would be rain there. And it not only rained, but hailed. But at the Chalbé [?] is [sic] was lovely and sunny. We had quite a good time. It will be a surprise getting a midweek letter after such a long time, but I have no work tonight as we have just come from the picnic. Please do not send us a parcel this month, only the toothbrushes and 1 tube of toothpaste each as we have everything, and please do not send chutney or anything but send us some extra money for travelling down, as we stay at Bareilly for ten or twelve hours and we will go to the canteen and things like that. But we won't by [sic] anything from Indian shops so you need not worry. Oh! Thanks awfuly [sic] for the money. I heard from Lall again, he writes quite regularly, but not so Ronald. I have only had one from him. I am writing to [one indecipherable word] to Thank her once more, and I will ask her to drop you a few lines. She sends her love. It must be horrible with all the ticks knocking round the house. No more news today, God bless and keep you for us with love from [underlined] Dave & Steve. [/underlined]

My own darling Daddy.
Just a few lines to wish you a very happy birthday. God bless and keep you for us. I am glad to hear the new season has begun and hope it will be a very succesful [sic] one.
On Thursday our "A" played the Secretariate [sic] and beat them 5-1. So that is our first two matches won easily. The Command "A", P.S.C."A" and the Band "A" are rather good but even so I think we stand a good chance of winning.
The class tournaments are continuing the Specials and the VIII are leading with 22 points each, then comes the X 15 points and then the IX 14 points. We are slowly but surely coming up now and if the tournament continues for a fair time there is no reason why we should not get ahead. Well no more news today with lots of love & kisses from your loving son [underlined] David. [/underlined]

My darling Mummy & Daddy.
Thanks for your letters. I am glad to hear Daddy is nearly O.K. Our school B played the band B. We beat them by 55 runs. I played. I don’t think permanently though. I made 0 1st Inns & 12 second inns 2nd highest score. I caught a good catch 1st Inns. It was quite a good day today after a long time. We are allowed to swim again. Steve has dived from the low board and I have dived from the high board which is over 10 feet. Isn’t that good? Our B drew with the Command A. Our A are playing the Rarayan Club this evening. I saw a lovely airdale yesterday. It was worth Rs 160. It had a fine big head and a beautifully glossy coat. I am so

Glad to hear that Uncle Serob has fixed up quite a good job. I think Mrs. Coombes is teaching music this year. The poor old dogs will be missing you very badly. Well cheerio. With lots of love and kisses from your

My darling Mummy & Daddy.
Thanks for the letters, stamps and the toopaste [sic] toffee. We [deleted] t [/deleted] ate the toffee when we came out of Hospital 3 days ago. We had very slight attacks. I was only in Hospital 10 days & Steve 11. We are both perfectly alright now. My class lost against the 6th by 3 runs. I was in Hospital then. Steves [sic] class & my class is playing today. My class has 15 runs start each inns. We went in first and were all out for [deleted] 31 [/deleted] 31 counting the handicap. I made 5 only. Steves [sic] class went in and are 48 for 9 wickets last men in. We have stopped at present because of the rain. Steve made 6 out. The snaps [deleted] of [/deleted] were not too good but the dogs have come out very well. Some boys looking at the
[page break]
photos asked if you were my sister. We enjoyed the pickles in the first parcel. The parcel came 5 days after I handed in the receipt. Two of our football team boys are down with apendacitus [sic] Dusham is one of them. Thanks for the Rs.5. I have not heard from Lall or Ronald for some time now. Fancy Steve getting five failures. I can’t understand it. We were not allowed to write letters while we were in Hospital. Cadets are not allowed to shoot this time only those over 18. Fancy Daddy shooting an iguana in Ashuganj. Poor old Don could not have meant anything by jumping [deleted] out [/deleted] on to the bed. He must have wanted to be petted as well. I am glad to hear all the dogs are O.K. No more news today with lots of love and Kisses from your loving son [underlined] David [/underlined]

My darling Mummy & Daddy
Thanks for your letters. We are being brave Mummy & we hope Aierses gets into this Electrical Enginearing. [sic] I thought once that it might be cholera poor Bazil got. We had a bit of storm the other night and it rained quite a lot but it is quite clear again. I am getting on quite well in lessons and everything else. Every one at home must be very surprised at Bazils [sic] sudden death. He will be missed badly because he always seemed to put life into everything. Don’t send any more stamps for the present, we will write again when we need some. I let Steve wear my last years Sunday suit and he looks very nice. It is very short for me, but I don’t need any more suits because the Kaki
[page break]
shorts and white longs make [deleted] we [/deleted] me have three extra. Sylvia might not have gone back to Darjeeling on account of the earthquake, that is most probably the reason. Do you think Naini has more rain than Darj:?. Yesterday we were going round the lake we saw what is called the raft for beginners. It is a piece of wood like a box only submerged in the water to a depth of 3 or 4 feet and kept up with buoys. There are also two diving boards one is quite high and the other is a low one. No more news today with love from your

My darling Mummy & Daddy.
Thank you for your letters. I also wrote to Ronald Raymond and Mr. Bean & Aierses on the 6th but I have had no reply. No there was nothing particular in it nothing about the strap, but [deleted] indecipherable word [/deleted] said the bathrooms are very bad. Yes I wear a warm shirt and a pullover. The school does not take a record of heights and weights. I have not taken mine yet. You do not get monthly reports just three in the whole year. I hope your stiff neck will soon be allright. [sic] We are playing Sherwood A today. It is a tournament match. I hope we win. I received a letter from Lall today isn’t that fine.?. I was very pleased. I am writing to Cox today. It rained a bit about two days ago.
[page break]
The food is quite good here. Not as good as St. Pauls though. The days are flying and we will soon come home. I am glad the dogs are getting on. It makes us so happy to hear all about them, and how things are getting on. I will try and write 2 letters a week every week. [deleted] indecipherable word [/deleted] Hopkroft (1) is here the good singer who was in St. Pauls choir. He is a special. Lall said that the new Rector [deleted] was [/deleted] [inserted] is [/inserted] a good sport. No more news today with love from your loving
son [underlined] David [/underlined]
P.S. When you write to Aiesres ask him if he recieved [sic] my letters. What is Marcus’ adress. [sic]

My darling Mummy & Daddy.
Thank you for your letters. Yes you must have felt very lonely as well. Didn’t I tell you that when Don was a little more sure of himself he would fight. Uncle Bob right about Airdailes [sic] trying to drown the dog they were fighting. If we get a chance of taking Communion we will take it. The R.C. Father that takes the se [inserted] r [/inserted] vices here gives very [deleted] nice [/deleted] inserted] fine [/inserted] sermons. Our A played Sherwood A and they beat us 4-0. They have seven masters in their team. They advertised in the papers for masters who were good in all games. I wrote to Mr. Bean the other day. It said in the papers that the planters say St. Pauls Cricket team is very promising. St. Pauls beat the planters by 90 runs when they were on best

form. We recieved [sic] the pants and stockings [deleted] and [/deleted] from marcus [sic] and everything is allright. [sic] Tuesday is a holiday. And a brother is coming here the highest of all the brothers in Catholic schools he stays with us the longest. I don’t know what his name is. I am getting on well in class. I get the strap sometimes, but that is what will get me through. I have stopped wearing a vest now, because I have got clamitized. [sic] French has been very easy so far, but later on I suppose it will get stiffer. I hope the dogs don’t have another fight. How do they behave to each other in the house.? Do they still watch each other? My class boys are going to ask for a swim on tuesday [sic] I hope we are allowed. I won’t swim out far so don’t be worried. Will write in the middle of the week when the stamps come. No more news today
[deleted] yo [/deleted] love from your loving son David.

Description
An account of the resource
Letter from David Boldy to his parents with general conversation about attending St. Joseph’s College, Naini Tal. He comments about home news regarding dogs fighting and their behaviour in the house. He writes mostly about college sports news intertwined with snippets of daily school and religious life, and tells his parents that they will take communion if possible and that the priest gives fine sermons. The expected visit of a senior priest on the forthcoming holiday is mentioned. He reports good progress in lessons but that he gets the strap on occasion and is philosophical about it. His class are going to ask about the possibility of going for a swim.
