“Adventures” Competition.
Dear Reader,
I am glad to be able to tell you that you have been awarded one of my prizes for your contribution to our competition, and that your name appears in the January 20th issue of CRACKERS.
As, however, the prize due to you is one in kind, and we sometimes have difficulty over import duties when such prizes are sent outside Great Britain – also, there is a possibility of danger in transit – we are following our usual course in such cases, and sending you a remittance for the value of the prize instead.
I therefore enclose a postal order for 2/6d. herewith, and I think you will agree that this is the better arrangement in the circumstances.
With congratulations and all good wishes,
Yours very truly,

October 5th.. 1928
My dear Daddy.
I hope you are quite well and happy. We are all quite well and happy. We went out for the last Saturday and had a very nice time. We went to the pictures it was a very nice piece. We had a dictation Test and I got 70. on a 100. We are going to skate in the [indecipherable word] Pujas. We got riding leave on Sunday and rode. Mummy asked the rector if she could take the Machatich’s out and he said, “yes.” We still play hockey. I have still got my pen and hockey stick. I have had them quite a long time. I took my one home and left it there. I will write on Sunday again. I was invited to Gwyither II’s party. Thank you for your letter. We will soon come home I will be very glad
[page break]
to see you. I think the Pujas will start on the 20th. The sports are the 19th.. I am ending my letter now. With [deleted] . [/deleted] lots of love and and kisses from

My darling Daddy.
Thank you for your letter. I think I have still got my last years running kit, I will see if it is in the linen room. It was a half holiday on Friday. Our team went to Kurseong to play Victoria + [deleted] a [/deleted] Gothals, we lost against Victoria the score being 4-0, and we lost against
Gothals 3-0, so we have lost the Newton cup, if Victoria beat Gothals by 3 goals then they get the cup, because they drew with St. Josephs. There are only 64 days left to come home. The weather is clearing up a bit. Mummy sent us the [deleted] l [/deleted] Little Folks magazine, we have now got about 4 or 5. We had an exam on wednessday [sic], it was an [deleted] e [/deleted] English exam, but we have not had our marks as yet. We had pictures up here last night, they were quite good, and
[page break]
it was on a small screen, but even then it was quite good. Havelock first XI lost against Lawrence first XI, but our second beat there [sic] second. The house matches are not finished yet but so far this is how the houses go
1. [underlined] ST. [/underlined} Lawrence. 28 marks.
2. [underlined] nd. [/underlined] Havelock. 26 " My house.
3. [underlined] rd. [/underlined] Clive 10 " Stevies house.
4. [underlined] th. [/underlined] Hastings [deleted] 16 [/deleted] 8 "
My house still has a chance of winning. There are no cups for the sports this year, I suppose because the school has not enough money. I am ending now
with love from your
loving [underlined] son [/underlined] David.
P.S. Kite flying season has come out. [underlined] [/underlined]

If you write one letter to both of us it will be quite alright [sic]. My house 1. [underlined] ST [/underlined] eleven beat Hastings house 1.[underlined] ST [/underlined] eleven

2.10.32. 1932.
My darling Daddy.
Thank you for your letter. The exam boys stay on very much later than the 1. [underlined] ST [/underlined] of December. I think I can arrange with one of the staff who are staying up, and has got a son 13 years old. I will let you know as soon as possible. We played Gothals yesterday and lost 4-0. Victory who beat us 1-0, beat Gothals 1-0. and so have won the Newton Cup. In the Latin [inserted] exam [/inserted] every boy in my form except one failed. The one who passed got 48. I got 30, really 35, but I got 5 marks taken away for talking, I only asked a boy if he had finished his paper. If those 5 marks had not been taken away I would have come 3. [underlined] rd [/underlined]. Our puja holidays will soon be starting. We have had some of the heats of the sports. The high jump, Long jump, and throwing the cricket ball in my class, but I came in none
[page break]
of them. It was out of another boy and me to come in the high jump for the final. but he just beat me. I cleared 4 ft-3 ins. [deleted] I I [/deleted] I think we are having some of the heats of the running races tomorrow, I hope to come in in [sic] [deleted] t [/deleted] some of the running things. Next year I will have a much better chance. In my class there is an obstical [sic] race this year. It is in some of the other classes too. This year there is going to be a house cup for fives.
In my class, my house boys are doing quite well. For the high jump 3 out of the 4 picked are my house, in long jump 3 out of the 6 picked are my house and in throwing the cricket ball 3 out of the 6 picked are my house, so I thing [sic] my house will get quite a lot of marks in my class.
I am ending now with lots of love and kisses from your loving son [underlined] David. [/underlined]

You will be glad to hear that I passed my theory exam with honours. I got 89. The other two boys also got honours, one got 83 and the other got 81. In my dorm, out of about 33 boys at least 15 have got watches, and last year out of the same number there were about two boys with watches. I hope everything is alright at home. Never mind we will soon be back again. It did not rain when we came up. Every Saterday [sic] is a half holiday Forms VI to IV are allowed on walking leave on Saterday's [sic]

Stevie the boy and myself went to the market to buy four pairs of socks and we got them for 5 annas a pair, isn't that cheap. Our first Exam will be next Saturday, It will be an essay on our holidays or something of that sort. [deleted] I [/deleted] My form master is M [underlined] r [/underlined] Doherty.
I think we are having pictures today with the schools own machine. The School's machine is a small one, and the films are silent. Wehave [sic] sent you both the tins of Guava jelly as we would have found it difficult to carry a tin like that up to school. So please keep it yourself and don't bother to send it to us. We have just been given our books. I am ending now with lots of love and kisses
from your loving
son [underlined] David. [/underlined}

ST. PAUL’S SCHOOL,
JALAPAHAR,
DARJEELING,
9.7.33.
My darling Daddy,
Thanks for your letter. I did not do very well in Divinity I got 44, but in Chemistry I came 2nd with 70. the 1st Boy getting 75. We are playing St. Josephs on Wednesday 1st XI match and on Saterday [sic] 2nd XI match. I have torn up the notes of the speech I gave, but I remember what [deleted] to [/deleted] I said so at the end of the letter I will write out the notes. Four of my form boys spoke including me, and the Rector said that the four best speeches of the day was given by my form the fourth form. We did not see poor Mummy yesterday and today because she is not well and does not want us to catch a throat from her. She very kindly asked Mrs. Apcar to take us out instead. Many happy returns of the day Daddy, [deleted] [indecipherable] [/deleted] God bless and keep us all. So sorry for wishing
[page break]
you so late. On Wednessday [sic] we went to Jalapahar and saw a concert. It was very good indeed.
All the forms are giving a concert very shortly. My form is acting “Shivering Shocks”, but we are changing the name to the “Secret of the Formula” or the “Hughes Murder Case.” I am the murderer, and I have an awful lot to learn.
Notes on Debate.
Motion. That the Expedition to Mt. Everest is a waste of Money [sic], lives, and Time [sic].
I am against the motion.
[Underlined] My Notes. [/underlined]
[underlined] Brave Men, the good Conquering Spirit. Courage. [/underlined] People say they are mad, what about when the areoplane [sic] was thought of as mad. A Scientist while inventing something is killed. The Expidition [sic] failed people laugh at the brave men who went up but he who laughs last laughs longest.
I made enlargements on these notes.
With lots of love and kisses your loving son [underlined] David. [/underlined]

My darling Daddy.
Thank you for your letter, and the pamflits [sic], some of them were very good ones. The under 15 XI played St. Josephs and they beat us 4-1 duly to the falt [sic] of our goal keep. Stevie played centreforward [sic] and I played right back. Our forwards could not break through their backs so this wednessday [sic] I am going forwards. Lets [sic] hope we win this time. We should have easily won the game. The first 15 minutes of the game the ball only came on our half once. Last night we saw a piece call [sic] “Head Winds”, it was shown with the school machine, and we enjoyed it. We saw Mummy yesterday and today and had a good time. I have come 5th this month. I know my dorm masters report. It is Jo in charge of the Dorm, and maintains
[page break]
good discipline. Jo a good lad in himself, and my conduct is very good quite good those two arent [sic] they? Have the trees grown much bigger? We went [deleted] [undecipherable] [/deleted] riding today and enjoyed ourselves. [deleted] At [/deleted]
At present the points for the Rectors Cup between St. Josephs [sic] and us are St. Josephs [sic] 7. St. Pauls [sic] 3. The total number of points amounts to 20 points. 6 marks for each of the two 1st XI matches and 4 marks for each of the two 2nd XI matches.
I am ending now with lots of love and kisses from your loving son.
[underlined] David [/underlined]
P.S. Ask Marcus to carry on collecting pamflits [sic] for us and when we are coming home he can give them to us.

My darling Daddy.
Thanks for your letter.
The 2nd XI played St Josephs [sic] again and this time we beat them 2-1. That made the points 7-7. The [deleted] [undecipherable] [/deleted] 2nd XI went to the pictures and we got a whole holiday. Stevie and I both played forwards this time. But yesterday our 1st XI lost against them 2-0 and they won the cup again. The rain spoilt the game for us. I go [sic] 78 in English and came 3rd.
We saw Mummy yesterday and today and had a good time. Yes we will take care of Mummy and not let her get ill again. We went for a ride today, and are getting nearly as good as jockeys now, I can control any horse in the stables

now. The weather is very bad at present and it does nothing but rain the whole day long. We are starting tomorrow, and the football houses matches will take place at the end of the year. I am glad to hear everything is alright at home. With lots of love and Kisses from your loving son [deleted] Da [/deleted]
