Interview with Ronald Marlow
Ronald Marlow went to Middleton Council School, then worked at Forgrove Engineering. He joined the Air Training Corps, volunteered for the Royal Air Force training in London at St Johns Wood. He became an air gunner ad flew Wellingtons, followed by a post to Heavy Conversion Unit. Ronald was sent to 50 Squadron at RAF Skellingthorpe where he flew Lancasters on night and daytime operations in France during the Normandy campaign. After 32 operations as a rear gunner he was sent to gunnery instruction, crashing with a Wellington into woods near RAF Market Harborough. At RAF Driffield (466 Squadron) he served with Albert Hollings flying in Halifaxes Mk 3 as a mid-upper gunner. He carried out operations in Germany to Wiesbaden and Stuttgart. When demobbed he moved to Lytham St. Anne's and Blackpool. Ronald discusses operation cancellations with return to base, flights and preparation, reasons for joining, volunteering, crewing up, service and off-duty life, secrecy, mascots, rank structure, military service condition (temperature at high altitude and heated gloves), military discipline, anti-aircraft guns, aircraft damage during operations, searchlights, memorials, decorations, Bomber Command recognition and reunions.

George Warren’s observer’s and air gunner’s flying log book
Observer’s and air gunner’s flying log book for G C Warren, navigator, covering the period from 25 August 1943 to 16 March 1945, when he failed to return from an operation to Nuremburg. He was stationed at SAAF Port Elizabeth, SAAF East London, RAF Millom, RAF Peplow, RAF Sandtoft, RAF Hemswell, and RAF Wickenby. Aircraft flown in were Anson, Audax, Hind, Wellington, Halifax, and Lancaster. He flew a total of 19 operations with 626 squadron, 2 Daylight and 17 night operations. His pilot on operations was Flying Officer Cox. Targets were Essen, Ludwigshafen, Ulm, Bonn, Gelsenkirchen, Munich, Wiesbaden, Cleves, Dresden, Chemnitz, Duisburg, Pforzheim, Dessau, Kassel, Dortmund, and Nuremburg.

Frank Tolley's Royal Canadian Air Force flying log book for aircrew other than pilot
Frank Tolley's log book covers the period 29 December 1943 to 27 August 1945 and details his training schedule and operations flown. He served at RAF Fingal, RAF Malton, RAF Moreton-in-Marsh, RAF Sandtoft and RAF Kelstern. Aircraft flown in were Anson, Bollingbroke, Wellington, Halifax and Lancaster. He carried out 22 daylight and night time operations with 625 Squadron to the following targets in Germany: Bremen, Bremen rail bridge, Chemnitz, Cleve, Dessau aircraft factories, Dortmund, Dresden, Hamburg, Hanau, Hannover, Heligoland, Kassel aircraft factories, Lutzkendorf, Mannheim docks, Misberg oil refineries, Nordhausen, Nuremberg and Wiesbaden. His pilots on operations were Flight Lieutenant Russell and Pilot Officer Windrim. He also took part in Operation Manna supply drops to The Hague and Rotterdam, Operation Dodge and Cook’s tours.

Frank Fertich’s Flying Log book as air gunner covering the period from 24 January 1944 to 17 April 1945. Detailing his flying training and operations flown as air gunner. He was stationed at RCAF Mont Joli (9 B&GS), RAF Wellesbourne Mountford (22 OTU), RAF Croft (1664 HCU) and RAF Middleton St George (428 Squadron). Aircraft flown in were Battle, Wellington, Halifax, Lancaster, Oxford and Anson.Targets were Essen, Cologne, Oberhausen, Ludwigshaven, Duisburg, Scholven, Wurzsburg, Hannover, Hanau, Merseburg, Zeitz, Wiesbaden, Bonn, Goch. Pforzheim, Mainz, Dortmund, Zweibrucken, Hagen, Neuss, Chemnitz, Dessau, Hemmingstedt and Hildesheim. He flew 22 night and 8 daytime operations with 428 Squadron, a total of 30. The log book also contains a poem and hand drawn illustrations including a woman with a horse and a naked woman captioned '428 Ghost'. His pilot on operations was Flying officer Anderson.

Starts with commentary on family in Poland and names recorded on visits to Poland. Continues with account of early life, school and life in Poland before the war.
Flashback 1. Mentions first operation on 300 Squadron at RAF Faldingworth. Continues with account of training in England at Hucknall, Montrose and Western Zoyland. He then trained as an instructor and was posted as a flying instructor. He volunteered for operational duties and eventually was allocated to a bomber squadron at RAF Finningley training on Wellington where he crewed up before posting to RAF Faldingworth, Continues with description of first operation to Wiesbaden and mistakenly landing at RAF Fiskerton on return. Concludes with a 10 year old schoolboy's wish to be a pilot.
Flashback 2. Account of Tadeusz joining the Polish Air Force including the reasons for his ambition, early experience of gliding, labour camp and military training. Continues with account of flying training with various incidents. Describes events during German invasion and escape to Romania.
Flashback 3. Continues with events after arriving in Romania and then travelling onwards by boat to Beirut then onwards to Marseille, Lyon. Gives account of German invasion of France in May 1940 and his escape via Toulouse, Bayonne and St Jean de Luz and then by British ship to Liverpool.
Flashback 4. Writes of changing his name and of his career in the RAF after the war including continuing flying with 300 Squadron and his final operation to Berchtesgaden as well as prisoner of war repatriation flights and food drops in Holland. Continues with account of flying troops back from Italy and a visit to Berlin. He was posted to ferry aircraft of many different types.

Extracts from log book from July 1944 on No 1 LFS and 625 Squadron on operations flying Lancasters and Oxfords on beam approach training, and then onto 156 Squadron in September 1944 until May 1945. There is also a summary of operations flown on 156 Squadron, a list of the stations he served at, a Tiger Moth endorsement and Link trainer sessions. His first or second pilots on operations were Pilot Officer Maxwell, Flight Lieutenant Marvin, Pilot Officer Kelsey, Pilot Officer Pollard and Flying Officer Lambert. Completed 60 Operations plus Operation Manna and Operation Exodus. Operations 4-18 missing from logbook. This item was sent to the IBCC Digital Archive already in digital form. Notable events are that Charles Godfrey undertook a search and rescue operation in a Defiant and during the operation to Trossy St Maximin 4 August 1944 his aircraft, Lancaster ND811, was brought down by anti-aircraft fire. Whilst he survived and evaded, his pilot, Ian Willoughby Bazalgette was awarded the Posthumous Victoria Cross. The hand written notes added to the end of the log book give a description to the crash, and his attempts to evade capture. Pilot Officer Godfrey also took part in Operation Manna, Operation Exodus and Operation Dodge.

He was stationed at RAF Dishforth and RAF Middleton St George. Aircraft flown in were: Halifax, Lancaster and Oxford. He flew a total of 28 operations with 428 Squadron, 7 daylight and 21 night time operations. Targets were: Essen, Cologne, Oberhausen, Ludwigshaven, Duisberg, Scholven, Nurnberg, Hannover, Hanau, Mersburg, Zeitz, Stuttgart, Weisbaden, Bonn, Pforzheim, Mainz, Chemnitz, Dessau, Dortmund, Sweibrucken, Hagen, Hemingstadt and Hildesheim. Archie Henry Halliday's navigators, air bombers, air gunners and flight engineers flying log book
Navigators, air bombers, air gunners and flight engineers flying log book for Archie Henry Halliday from 30 August 1944 to 10 April 1945 detailing his training and operational duties. Training was with No.4 S of TT at RAF St. Athan and Heavy Conversion Units at RAF Lindholme and RAF Bottesford. All operations were flown with 101 Squadron with Flight Officer Withenshaw as pilot. He also flew non operational flights with pilots Flight Officer McKay and Flight Officer Hanney. Aircraft flown in training were Halifax Mk II and Lancasters Mk I and Mk III. Archie took part in 31 operations, on which 25 night operations in which he flew as engineer. The operations were to Karlsruhe, Osnabrück, Ludwigshafen, Ulm, Coblenz, Bonn, Büer, Osterfeld, Nürenburg, Merseburg, Duisburg, Zuffenhausen, Mannheim, Weisbaden, Kleves, Pforzheim, Cologne, Chemnitz, Dessau, Kassel, Essen, Dortmund, Misburg, Hanau, Langendreer, Bremen, Hanover and Paderborn in Germany and Brüx in Czechoslovakia.

Aircraft flown in were Manchester, Lancaster, Oxford, Flying Fortress, York, Dakota and Anson. He flew a total of 33 operations, 10 night operations with 9 Squadron, 14 night operations with 514 Squadron, 5 daylight and 4 night operations with 149 Squadron plus two Operation Manna. Targets were Hamburg, Mannheim, Nurnberg, Leverkusen, Monchen Gladbach, Berlin, Munich, Dusseldorf, Frankfurt, Stuttgart, Laon, Rouen, Wiesbaden, Hohenbudberg, Dresden, Bocholt, Hallendorf, Kiel, Rotterdam, and The Hague. His pilot on operations was<span data-ccp-props="{"201341983":0,"335559739":200,"335559740":276}"> Squadron Leader Payne. </span>The book also records flights on Operation Exodus, Cook's Tours and one Operation Dodge flight.
