Roy Horsburgh’s Royal Canadian Air Force Observer’s Flying Log Book
R Horsburgh’s Observer’s Flying Log Book detailing operations and training flown as Observer covering the period 25 October 1942 to 23 August 1943. He was stationed at RCAF Virden (19 EFTS), RCAF Brandon (12 SFTS), RAF Abingdon (10 OTU), RAF Marston Moor (1652 HCU) RAF St Eval, RAF Elvington (77 Squadron) and RAF Graveley (35 Squadron). Aircraft flown in were Tiger Moth, Crane, Anson, Whitley and Halifax. He flew eight anti-submarine sweeps with 10 0TU, four night operations with 77 Squadron and 10 night operations with 35 Squadron (total 14) Targets were Bochum, Dusseldorf, Le Creusot, Gelsenkirchen, Hamburg, Essen, Remscheid, Mannhein, Turin, and Berlin. Logbook annotated “missing” on this operation.

Details include numbers of aircraft and other details, Followed by record of 277 and 198 squadron Squadron RAF Martlesham covering fighter and other air sea rescue operations during recovery of Brennan's crew which had ditched near Dutch coast on 22 June 1943. J G Madge’s Observer’s and Air Gunner’s Flying Log Book detailing operations and training flown covering the period 18 November 1942 to 10 November 1944. He was stationed at RAF Morpeth (4 AGS), RAF Little Horwood (26 OTU), RAF Marham (1483 (B)G Flight), RAF Stradishall (1657 HCU), RAF Wratting Common (90 Squadron), RAF Barford St John (16 OTU), RAF Swinderby (1654 HCU), RAF Syerston (5 LFS), RAF Coningsby (97 Squadron) and RAF Warboys (NTU) . Aircraft flown in were Botha, Welllngton, Stirling, Martinet and Lancaster. He flew 17 night operations with 90 Squadron and 2 night operations with 97 Squadron. Targets were Mining (4), Hamburg (3), Remscheid, Turin, Peenemunde, Berlin (2), Nuremburg, Monchen Gladbach, Kassel, Mannheim, Leverkusen and with 97 Squadron Ladbergen and Rheine. His pilots on operations were Flight Sergeant Brayshaw and Flight Lieutenant Runnacles. On a training flight on 10th November 1944 his aircraft was posted as ”missing” and he was “ Death presumed” in May 1946.

His pilot for his first 'second dickie' operation was Pilot Officer Hellis. The log book also contains two target photographs of Berlin and an aerial photo of an airfield.

Observer’s and air gunner’s flying log book for F Williamson, air gunner. Covering the period from 27 December 1942 to 27 June 1944. Detailing his flying training and operations flown. He was stationed at RAF Morpeth, RAF Cottesmore, RAF Fulbeck, RAF Wigsley and RAF Syerston. Aircraft flown in were Botha, Wellington, and Lancaster. He flew a total of 19 operations with 106 Squadron. Pilot’s flying log book for Warrant Officer Ernest Smith, from 3 April 1943 to 29 June 1944, recording operations and instructional duties. He served at RAF Hixon, RAF Blyton, RAF Grimsby (Waltham), RAF Binbrook, RAF Wickenby, RAF Bircotes, RAF Church Broughton, RAF Finningley and RAF Lulsgate Bottom. Aircraft flown were Wellington, Lancaster Mk 1 and Lancaster Mk 3. Records a total of 23 operations (3 cut short) as a pilot with 100 Squadron, 460 Squadron, 12 Squadron and 626 Squadron, on the following targets in France, Germany and Italy: Berlin, Cologne, Dusseldorf, Essen, Frankfurt, Gelsenkirchen, Hamburg, Hanover, Kassel, La Rochelle (gardening), Mannheim, Milan, Nuremburg, Remscheid and Rheydt. Also details duties as a qualified flying instructor in various training units, and includes several pilot and instructor assessments as being 'above the average'. Other notes include: 'SEPT 8TH 1943 ITALY SIGNS ARMISTICE', 'C FLT 12 SQD FORMED 626 SQD WICKENBY' and 'AWARDED THE DFC'. Also contains memorabilia including telegrams from July 1941 about serious injuries received in an air accident and a letter from 1950 confirming the award of the Air Efficiency Award.

Edward Milling's observer's and air gunner's flying log book
Log book for Sergeant Edward Milling from 16 August 1942 to 27 September 1943. Navigator Sergeant E Milling was stationed with 103 Squadron at RAF Elsham Wolds, and 166 Squadron at RAF Kirmington, where he flew Lancasters. The log book details 27 operations over Germany and Italy: Berlin, Bochum, Cologne, Dortmund, Duisberg, Düsseldorf, Gelsenkirchen, Hamburg, Hannover, Krefeld, Leverkusen, Mannheim, Mönchengladbach, Mulheim, Munich, Nuremberg, Peenemünde, Remscheid, Turin, Wuppertal. His pilot on operations was Warrant Officer Chesterton. The final three entries are made by the commanding officer reporting that Sergeant Milling's aircraft failed to return from Hannover. Stamped “DEATH PRESUMED”.

Aircraft flown: Dominie, Proctor, Defiant, Wellington IC, Manchester, Lancaster I and Lancaster III. Records a total of 23 night operations (plus three returned early), final entry reads “Bombing - Berlin failed to return”. Targets in Germany and Italy are: Berlin, Bochum, Cologne, Essen, Gelsenkirchen, Gulf of Danzig, Hamburg, Hanover, Kassel, Krefeld, Leverkusen, Mannheim, Milan, Mulheim, Munich, Nurnburg, Oberhausen, Peenemunde and Remscheid. His pilot on operations was Flying officer Hoboken, with second pilots Flight Sergeant Cheney, Sergeant Holburn and Flying officer Banfield.

He flew a total of 36 operations, 31 night operations with 214 Squadron and 2 daylight and 3 night operations with 576 Squadron. He also flew on 3 Operation Manna flights. Targets were Duisburg, Lorient, Fresian Isles, Cologne, St Jean de Luc, St Nazaire, Berlin, Hamburg, Kiel, Baltic Sea, Dortmund, Bochum, Wuppertal, Dusseldorf, Krefeld, Mullheim, Elberfeld, Gelsenkirchen, Aachen, Remscheid, Nurnberg, Nordhausen, Lutzkendorf, Plauen, Cuxhaven and Berchtesgaden. Operation Manna flights were to The Hague and Rotterdam.
