40 items. The collection consists of the service and private papers of Paolo Troglio (b. 1921), an aviere of Regia Aeronautica later attached to the Luftwaffe. Paolo was stationed in Italy, France, Greece, Albania, and on the Russian Front where he became a prisoner of war. He escaped and was posted to a Luftwaffe logistic unit with the rank of Gefreiter. Toward the end of the war, back in Italy, Paolo became an informant for the Resistance, to which he passed military intelligence. The collection comprehends photographs of barracks, aircraft, airfields, ordnance, and his friends in informal settings. There is also correspondence exchanged between Paolo and his family, letters from the 'Italia' partisan brigade, and a pair of Deutsche Afrika Korps googles. The collection also include correspondence about a war damage claim lodged by Angelo Bernabè, whose daughter would later be married to Paolo.

R.A.F. SHATTER ’SE[missing letters]
BIG RAID ON BALTIC COAST: 41 MISSING
‘Forts’ Wreck Two Other Vital Plants: Berlin Bombed, Too
IN the last 24 hours three huge factories vital to German armaments productions have been shattered by the Allied air forces.
R.A.F. bombers during the night flew to the Baltic coast town of Peenemunde, 60 miles north-west of Stettin, to make a heavy attack in bright moonlight on the “secret” research and development establishment there, the largest of its kind in Germany. Forty-one bombers are missing from the night’s operations.
This attack followed blows by U.S. Flying Fortresses raiding in daylight on –
Regensburg, on the Danube, site of Germany’s second largest aircraft factory, where the latest type of Messerschmitt fighters are made; and
Schweinfurt, 65 miles east of Frankfurt, where there are important ball-bearing works.
After raiding Regensburg the Fortresses flew on another 1,000 miles over the Alps to land at bases in North Africa.
The R.A.F.’s night attack was the first on Peenemunde. The Air Ministry communiqué announcing the raid went on:
[Italics] First reports indicate that the attack was well concentrated. A great number of enemy aircraft were encountered along the route. Several of these were destroyed.
Mosquitoes bombed objectives in Berlin.
Fighter Command intruders carried out many attacks on airfields and railway targets in France, the Low Countries, and North-West Germany. Four enemy aircraft were destroyed. Forty-one bombers and one fighter are missing. [/italics]
The attack on Peenemunde was made in conditions approximating to daylight. Like the U.S. attacks on Schweinfurt and Regensburg, it was a precision attack on a special objective of outstanding importance in the air war. The Peenemunde establishment deals with high-grade development work on aircraft, radiolocation and armaments.
Biggest Day of the War
These latest Allied raids, together with simultaneous attacks carried out yesterday on German airfields in Northern France and on air bases near Marseilles by bombers from North Africa, make up thhe [sic] most intensive day in the air since the war began.
To-day’s German communiqué reporting on the raids, said:
“The enemy dropped a large number of H.E. and incendiary bombs on places on the North German coast during the night. There were civilian casualties. Night fighters and A.A. guns shot down at least 37 aircraft.
“Enemy air formations which flew over Southern Germany in daylight yesterday lost 51 four engined bombers and five fighters. In two South German towns civilians suffered casualties.”
10 MILES OF SMOKE
Great Factory in Flames
The attacks by Fortresses on Regensburg and Schweinfurt celebrated the first anniversary of their initial blow at Europe.
Returning crews were jubilant over the results of the attack on Schweinfurt, reporting smoke billowing up to 10,000 feet over the target. A reconnaissance pilot later reported that smoke had risen 20,000 feet and was drifting for 10 miles.
Preliminary reports on Regensburg stated. “Regensburg appears really well pranged. Plenty craters. Smoke issuing from factory buildings.”
The Vital Targets
Brig.-Gen. Frederick L. Anderson, the Commanding General Eighth U.S. Air Force Bomber Command, said this after the raids:
”The recent attacks into Germany surely have caused the enemy to doubt the safety of any part of Axis Europe. Penetrations much deeper than any which some of our critics thought possible were but the beginning of the Daylight Battle of Germany. Germany is now wide open – no part secure.
“Between Our Jaws”
“We have celebrated this anniversary by sending out two large forces of Fortresses deep into Germany. One of these forces is continuing on south, almost a thousand more miles beyond its target, to Africa.
“We have taken up the ‘shuttle service’ across Europe, a service which was started by the R.A.F., but which both Air Forces will now carry out while demonstrating beyond all doubt that the end of German power is but a matter of time.
Allied Air Forces in Africa have now contacted those from England, and German [sic] is between their jaws.
“Although we cannot say that the end actually is in sight, the eventual end, the ultimate collapse of German resistance, due to the ever-spreading bomb cancer, certainly is obvious and inevitable.
“The real results of strategic, precision bombing can never be spectacularly or immediately apparent. But the final effects of the prolonged bombing of this kind are as inevitable as the chain of events necessary to build an enemy aeroplane. We are breaking that chain in several places and many other chains along with it.”
INVASION PRELUDE
Stockholm. Wednesday. – The Germans regard the Fortress bombardments of French airfields as the prelude to the invasion of France, say Berlin messages. – A.P.
FIRST “PRECISION BLOW” AT NIGHT
WE RAN THE GAUNTLET TO PEENEMUNDE
By Our Air Correspondent
THE important tactical feature of the attack on Peenemunde was that it was the first precision attack at night. Unlike the customary practice of saturating a target area embracing many industrial buildings, our bombers went out to bomb one particular building.
Ordinarily, identification of such a selected target at night is very difficult; to pin-point such a target at night it is necessary to wait for such conditions as bright moonlight, which gives an almost daylight effect, and clear weather.
Of course, such conditions have a disadvantage in that they expose our bombers to greater dangers from enemy night fighters. This would account for the losses last night. Peenemunde involves a round trip of nearly 1,300 miles, and our bombers would have had to run the gauntletf [sic] rom [sic] swarms of night fighters operating from the north-west coast of Germany, Denmark, and the whole Baltic area.
Selection of the works at Peenemunde fits into the present policy of reducing the offensive and defensive power of the Luftwaffe by striking at production and operational bases. Radiolocation production has been badly hit by two attacks – one on Friedrichshafen on June 20 and the other on Peenemunde last night.
[map]
[italics] Included in the air attacks of the past 36 hours have been raids on airfields and railways in the Calais-Lille-Poix area and other objectives in the Low Countries and North-West Germany. [/italics]

MORE TWO-WAY BLOWS ON GERMANY
R.A.F. DOUBLE ATTACK ON SCHWEINFURT
REGENSBURG PLANE WORKS DEVASTATED
BIG BRITISH FORCES OUT LAST NIGHT
The great R.A.F. and United States non-stop effort to crush Germany's air strength rose to a new height yesterday when massive forces of American heavy bombers from both Britain and Italy blasted Regensburg, in Bavaria, in the third two-way assault in four days.
Berlin Radio reported that a fourth double attack was in progress last night when it announced violent combats over Germany's southern and western frontiers between night-fighters and British raiders.
This followed closely on big night activities by more than 1,000 R.A.F. bombers. Most of these concentrated on two shattering blows – new tactics against Schweinfurt, in Bavaria, most vital bottleneck of the German arms industry, which had already been battered by day a few hours earlier by American heavy bombers from this country.
Thirty-five R.A.F. bombers are missing from the night's operations, which included attacks on objectives in North-West Germany and the completion of a very extensive mine-laying programme. Intruder patrols, from which one aircraft is missing, destroyed three enemy aircraft.
Last night two big forces of R.A.F. heavy bombers crossed the East and South-East Coast heading for the Continent. Later an alert was sounded in Western Switzerland.
Describing yesterday's operations, United States Strategic Air Forces in Europe said:
"Strong forces of heavy bombers of the Eighth A.A.F., escorted by A.A.F. and R.A.F. fighters, to-day attacked aircraft works at Regensburg, ball-bearing works at Stuttgart and other targets in South-West Germany.
[page break]
"The 15th A.A.F. from Italy joined in the attack on Regensburg. The escorting fighters shot down 27 enemy aircraft, three of our fighters were lost Thirty-one of the 8th A.A.F. bombers are missing."
The destruction of more than 25 German planes of more than 100 which attacked the bomber fleets from Italy was claimed in incomplete reports.
At Regensburg two plane plants were the objective: one at Prufening, making component parts, another at Obertraubling, assembling ME 109s. The latter was raided last Tuesday by the largest force ever sent out by the Mediterranean Allied air forces against a single target.
Photographs developed as soon as the British-based bombers got back from Regensburg showed that the target had been devastated.
Regensburg ranks among the main centres of enemy fighter production. Crews said they left columns of black smoke rising 10000ft high from the plane factories and flames that could be seen 35 miles away.
GUIDED BY FIRES
R.A.F.s Changed Tactics
The R.A.F., in making their first visit to Schweinfurt on Thursday night, departed from their usual tactics of one big cascade bombing on a target in one night.
Fires started on Wednesday by the United States Eighth Army Air Force were still burning on the arrival of our first force. The target was effectively marked and by the end of the second attack a large conflagration was seen, with smoke rising to a great height.
Hundreds of Lancasters and Halifaxes, by far the greater part of the force of well over 1,000 aircraft despatched on Thursday night, made two separate attacks at an interval of two hours. In the force were many Canadian and Australian crews.
The enemy began to lay fighter flares during the first attack which began at five minutes past eleven, but not a single flare was seen during the second attack. Zero hour for this was at five minutes past one.
Within a few minutes of zero hour an effective concentration of markers was laid. Great numbers of H.E. and incendiary bombs were dropped, and clouds of black smoke began to rise.
The fires were still burning to guide the second force, but again the target indicators were laid. There was much smoke over the target and the markers were needed.
The fires were rapidly extending and the smoke now rose to a great height.
The ground defences were strong initially, especially at the beginning of the first attack, but their efficiency decreased under the weight of bombing.
"The 50 or 60 searchlights around the town were standing aimlessly up on end," said a pilot in the first force.
When the second attack began the searchlights were again forming a ring and another strong barrage was put up, but once again bombing disorganised the ground crews and prevented any effective co-operation.
Some crews reported that they saw fires still burning in Stuttgart, last attacked on Sunday night.
There was better weather on Thursday night over a great part of South-West Germany than there has been in some weeks. The skies were clear and visibility very good.
With the defences in this part of Germany not so strong as around Berlin, cloud cover is less essential.
"The sky was perfectly clear all the way to the target," said a Lancaster squadron commander in the first force.
"Though there was no moon, there was brilliant starlight, and as we flew over the Continent we could see that the ground was snow-covered all the way. It was dazzlingly white round Schweinfurt."
Though a town of no more than 60,000 inhabitants, Schweinfurt is considered by the economic experts who advise in the choice of targets as the most important industrial centre of its kind in Germany or German-occupied Europe and probably the most vital bottleneck in the whole of the enemy's armament industry.
This is because its main factories used to produce about 50 per cent. of the total production of ball and roller bearings of all types available to the Axis.
Every branch of industry supplying the armed forces requires a large supply of bearings. All modern machines made for high performance would be useless without them.
The seven ball-bearing plants in Schweinfurt had a pay-roll of more than 20,000 – one third of the town's population. In scarcely any one other industry in any other town in Germany is there a higher proportion of industrial workers to the whole population.
Throughout yesterday aircraft of the Allied Expeditionary Air Force carried out a series of attacks on enemy-occupied territory. Marauder medium bombers of the United States Ninth Air Force attacked the airfield at Gilze-Rijen, Deelen, and Leeuwarden, in Holland. St. Trond, in Belgium, and military objectives in Northern France.
R.A.F., Dominion, and Allied Boston, Mitchell, and Mosquito bombers and Typhoon fighter-bombers of the Second Tactical Air Force attacked military objectives in Northern France.
The Marauders were escorted and covered by R.A.F., Dominion, and Allied Spitfires, and the Bostons, Mitchells, Mosquitoes, and Typhoons by R.A.F. Typhoon fighters.
From all these operations one Mosquito is missing, says a joint Air Ministry and American H.Q. communique.
For the first time this month the Marauders and their R.A.F., Dominion and Allied fighter escorts ran into determined fighter opposition. Four medium bombers and one fighter failed to return.
A medium-sized enemy merchant vessel was hit by a torpedo off the Norwegian coast during the hours of darkness early yesterday morning by a Beaufighter from a New Zealand squadron of Coastal Command, states the Air Ministry.
The attack took the enemy by surprise, and a huge orange explosion was seen on the merchant vessel, followed by a fire on the port bow.

3,000 sorties smash Nazi defence plane plants
GREATEST ANGLO-U.S. MASS ATTACK IN 24 HOURS
By BASIL CARDEW
[indecipherable rubber stamp]
IN the first full-scale two way attack on Europe, aimed primarily at destroying Germany's fighters, their airfields, and factories producing the planes, the Allied air forces have just made between 2,500 and 3,000 sorties in the space of 24 hours.
[map]
This tremendous air offensive covers the day and night of August 17-18, and was mounted both from Britain and the Mediterranean.
Taken in conjunction with the American raid on the great Messerschmitt factory at Weiner Neustadt, 30 miles from Vienna, at the weekend, the latest Flying Fortress assault on the Regensburg factory in southern Germany is believed to have partially stopped production of the very types of aircraft the Germans will need to repulse a Second Front.
REGENSBURG BLAZES
Short-range fighters are the spearhead of defence.
Reconnaissance pictures taken four hours after the Regensburg attack show that the Fortress bombs were accurate and caused great havoc.
At least four large buildings were still on fire when the spy plane passed over. All the six main workshops were destroyed, five of them severely.
The main assembly shop, the gun-testing range, large new shops that had recently been erected, the boiler house, office buildings, and several other small unidentified buildings or the great plant have been damaged or burned out, in some cases completely destroyed.
The target at Regensburg was Germany's second largest aircraft factory, makers of the latest type of Messerschmitt single-engined fighter planes. It was to have been the main production unit left to the enemy for its fighters after the plant at Weiner Neustadt, which was producing a third of the Messerschmitt programme, had been partially knocked out.
MIGHTY BLOW
Bomber Command's contribution to this onslaught on Germany's first-line defences against an imminent Allied invasion followed a few hours after the Regensburg raid, when a mighty force of home-based, long-range aircraft heavily attacked in bright moonlight the armament and radio development establishment at Peenemunde, 60 miles north-west of Stettin, on Tuesday night, and dropped 1,500 tons of bombs.
This large, secret factory produces the equipment for the German fighters that are at the moment No. 1 target for the Allies.
The bombers had to fly on as long a route as that to Berlin to hammer the factory, and they encountered many of the night-fighter squadrons and ground defences that have been greatly strengthened recently for the protection of the German capital. But the raid was devastatingly successful, although it cost 41 aircraft.
The rest of the 2,500-3,000 sorties
[page break]
OUR Stirling dropped on its starboard side and began to lose height. Luckily the bomb-aimer had just come up from his position and was sitting by me, so that he was able to help me to drag on the control and pull the Stirling level.
"All the way back it was difficult to control the aircraft. The bomb-aimer and I would get the Stirling level on its course and then down would slip the starboard wing and we would swing off our course.
"The flight-engineer helped matters by running three engines off the starboard tank, so lightening the starboard side of the aircraft. When we were near base I lowered the under-carriage and flaps and tried out how I could handle her like that. She answered to the control perfectly, and I glided down to a safe landing on the runway."
The Lancasters which attacked transformer and switching stations in North Italy on the night of July 15-16 did not return to England immediately, but, as before, when a force of Lancasters bombed the radio-location factory at Friedrichshafen, they used airfields in North Africa as an advanced base.
On Saturday night they returned

Alan McInnes memoir
A German Holiday 1944-45
Description
An account of the resource
An autobiography by Alan of his time as a prisoner of war. He describes the night they were shot down over Germany. Also his training with his mainly Australian crew. Then he goes into more detail regarding the operation when he was shot down.
He describes their capture, mistreatment and interrogations at various locations. After interrogations at Dulag Luft they were sent to a transit camp in Frankfurt then on by train to Heydekrug, Stalag Luft VI. Although their camp section was new it was cramped and basic. He describes camp life in detail. As the Russians got closer they were sent by train to an Army camp at Thorn. He read a copy of NCO education in the camp. These courses were extremely popular and supported by text books sent from the UK. Exams were sat and papers sent to the UK for marking. At Thorn they marched to Stammlager 357 but not for long. They then marched back to the railway and were sent to Fallingbostel. He describes the rail journey in detail, then in greater detail he describes camp life.
Later he was moved to an officer's camp at Eichstadt. This turned out to be an Army camp which refused them and they were sent to Sagan. He stayed there for a short time then was moved to Stalag Luft 3, then 111A. As the Russians neared they moved again. After a couple of days waiting in trucks they returned to their camp. The railway system was breaking down as the end of the war neared.
After the Russians reached them they were allowed out of the camp but still remained billeted there. He writes about his impressions of the Russians.
His journey home was delayed by rain that did not allow aircraft to fly.
His story ends with his retelling of the night his aircraft was shot down, his night in Brussels and his return to England.
