Description
An account of the resource
Observer's and air gunner's flying log book for Bomb Aimer Eric Frederick Coling from June 1942 to February 1953. Detailing his training schedule, operations flown and post war duties. Served at 44 Air School, South Africa; 16 Operational Training Unit, Upper Heyford; 1660 Conversion Unit, RAF Swinderby and RAF Skellingthorpe. Aircraft flown were Anson, Oxford, Wellington, Manchester and Lancaster Mk 1, Mk3. Eric completed a total of 13 night time operations but on the fourteenth was reported as missing. The operations were carried out as bomb aimer over targets in Italy and Germany: Turin, Milan, Hamburg, Mannheim, Nuremberg, Peenemünde, Berlin and Hannover. His pilots on operations were Pilot Officer Dennis and Flight Sergeant Code. In his proficiency tests Eric was described as 'average' and as being 'keen and reliable'. His post war flying is recorded.

<p>Observer's and air gunners flying log book for Warrant Officer HVT Ward, flight engineer, from 15 September 1942 to 9 September 1945. Detailing his training schedule, operations flown and instructional duties. He was stationed at: RAF St. Athan, RAF Waddington, RAF Wigsley, RAF Syerston and RAF Skellingthorpe.<span class="Apple-converted-space"> </span>Ward flew in the following aircraft: Oxford, Manchester, Lancaster Mk1 and Mk 3, Halifax and Stirling. As a flight engineer he carried out 34 operations, 26 night time operations with 44 Squadron followed by a second tour of<span class="Apple-converted-space"> </span>four daylight and four night time operations with 463 Squadron. Targets were (in order): Genoa, Hamburg, Turin, Stuttgart, Mannerheim, [sic] Nienburg, Gronde river (Gardening), Duisburg, Essen, Berlin, Düsseldorf, Lorient, Milan, Wilhelmshaven, Nürnberg [sic] (Nuremberg), St, Nazaire, Lutzkeneron [sic], Würzburg, Bremen, Wesel, Frage [sic], Nordhausen, Komutov [sic], Juvencourt [sic] (Juvancourt). His pilots on operations were: Pilot Officer Walker, Flight Sergeant Elger, Flight Lieutenant Walker, Flying Officer Riggs and Flying Officer Findlay. In between tours he served as a flight engineer instructor on1661 Conversion Unit, 1654 Conversion Unit and No. 5 Lancaster Finishing School. Ward also took part in Operation Exodus and a Cooks Tour. Ward's log book also records his time spent in a Link Trainer and his time at the controls of an aircraft. After the war he joined the Royal Auxiliary Air Force and flew in Auster aircraft as an air observation post with pilot Captain Huggins.</p>

F T Dunn’s Air Bomber’s Flying Log Book covering the period from 24 September 1942 to 22 November 1943. Detailing his flying training and operations flown as air bomber. He was stationed at RAF Mount Hampden as pupil pilot 3-21 Aug 1942, South African RAF Grahamstown (44 Air School), RAF Honeybourne and RAF Long Marston (24 OTU), RAF Riccall (1658 HCU) and RAF Pocklington (102 Squadron). Aircraft flown in were Oxford, Anson, Whitley and Halifax. He flew on 12 night operations with 102 Squadron. Targets were Hamburg, Mannheim, Nuremburg, Milan, Peenemunde, Montlucon, Modane, Hanover and Berlin – log book annotated on this date ‘Shot up Halifax crashed in mid-air over base’. Annotated ‘Killed in action’. His pilots on operations were Flight Sergeant Hughes and Warrant Officer Brooks.

He also completed 5 Cooks tours. Targets were Essen, Dortmund, Dusseldorf, Wuppertal, Munster, Bochum, Cologne, Montchanin, Krefeld, Mulheim, Turin, Hamburg, Milan, Peenemunde, Berlin, Mannheim, Munich, Montlucon, Hannover, Leipzig, Dresden, Dessau, Kassel, Zweibrucken, Nurnberg, Bremen, Bottrop, Osnabruck, Kiel, Potsdam, Berchtesgaden, The Hague, Rotterdam, Brussels, Lubeck, Juvincourt and Bari.

J A Dellow’s Air Bomber’s Flying Log Book covering the period 1 August 1942 to 28 May 1945. Detailing his flying training and operations flown as air bomber. He was stationed at RCAF Picton 31 B&GS), RCAF Mount Hope (33 ANS), RAF Kinloss/Forres (19 OTU), RAF Wigsley (1654 HCU), RAF Waddington and RAF Dunholme Lodge (44 Squadron) and RAF Manby (Empire Air Armament School). Continues with some personal recollections, promotions and courses. Concludes with return to Sri Lanka and service in the Royal Ceylonese Air Force. Notes that he was the first Ceylonese Commander of the Royal Ceylon Air Force and he died in 1974.

The collection concerns Squadron Leader Robert AM Palmer VC, DFC and Bar (115772, Royal Air Force) and contains his log books, photographs, fact sheets, newspaper cuttings, documents, correspondence and a substancial history of his last operation. <br /><br />He flew one hundred and eleven operations as a pilot with 75, 149 and 109 Squadrons and was killed 23 December 1944 when leading a daylight operation as an Oboe marker.<br /><br />The collection also contains 51 items in a <a href="https://ibccdigitalarchive.lincoln.ac.uk/omeka/collections/show/2178">Photograph album</a>.<br /><br />The collection has been donated to the IBCC Digital Archive by Penny Palmer and catalogued by Nigel Huckins. <br /><br />Additional information on Robert AM Palmer is available via the <a href="https://losses.internationalbcc.co.uk/loss/221528/">IBCC Losses Database</a>

Robert Palmer’s RAF Pilot’s Flying Log Book from 12 April 1940 to 12 May 1942 detailing his training and operations as a pilot and instructor. He was stationed at RAF Desford (No. 7 Elementary Flying Training School), RAF Grantham (No. 12 Flying Training School), RAF Harwell (No. 15 OTU), RAF Feltwell (75 Squadron), RAF Mildenhall (149 Squadron) and RAF Lossiemouth and RAF Lakenheath (No. 20 OTU). Aircraft in which flown: DH82 Tiger Moth, Anson, Wellington, Magister. Records 3 night operations with 75 Squadron, and 9 night operations with 149 Squadron on the following targets in France and Germany: Bordeaux, Boulogne, Bremen, Dusseldorf, Gelsenkirchen, Hanover, Lorient, Ludwigshafen, Mannheim and Wilhelmshaven. His first or second pilots on operations were Pilot Officer Horton and Pilot Officer Gilmore.

Based at Portage La Prairie (No. 7 Air Observers School), Paulson (No. 7 Bombing and Gunnery School), Winnipeg (No. 5 Air Observers School), RAF Kinloss (No. 19 Operational Training Unit), RAF Winthorpe (1661 Conversion Unit), RAF Syerston (106 Squadron), RAF Bardney (9 Squadron), RAF Woodhall Spa (617 Squadron), RAF Swinderby (1660 Conversion Unit), RAF Skellingthorpe, RAF Sturgate and RAF Waddington (61 Squadron). Aircraft flown: Anson, Battle, Whitley, Manchester, Lancaster and Stirling. Records a total of 35 night operations. Targets in France, Germany, Italy and Norway are: Angoulême, Berlin, Bochum, Brunswick, Clermont-Ferrand, Cologne, Dortmund-Ems Canal, Essen, Gelsenkirchen, Hamburg, Hanover, Krefeld, Leverkusen, Lyons, Magdeburg, Mannheim, Metz, Milan, Modane, Mölbis, Mulheim, Munich, Nordhausen, Nuremburg, Oberhausen, St Etienne, Tonsberg, Turin and Wurzburg. Later notes include a Cook's Tour flight and participation in Operations “Dodge”, “Spasm”, “Wastage” and “Frontline”. His pilots on operations were Flight Sergeant Brown, Pilot Officer Whetter, Flying Officer Ham, Squadron Leader Howroyd, Flying Officer Cole, Flight Lieutenant Hadland, Flight Lieutenant Lipton and Flying Officer Bain. <br /><br />This item was sent to the IBCC Digital Archive already in digital form. Navigator’s, air bomber’s and air gunner’s flying log book for E D Keen, flight engineer, covering the period from 30 July 1943 to 18 May 1946. Detailing his flying training, operations flown and instructor duties. He was stationed at RAF Woolfox Lodge, RAF Witchford, RAF Leicester East, RAF Tarrant Rushton, RAF Keevil, RAF Tilstock, RAF Saltby, RAF Marston Moor and RAF Linton-on-Ouse. Aircraft flown in were Stirling, Anson, Blenheim, Audax, Dakota, Oxford, Halifax, Lancaster, Liberator and Master. He flew a total of 24 night operations with 196 Squadron. Targets were Boulogne, Montlucon, Modane, Mannheim, Hannover, Kattegat, Kassel, Bremen, others were special duty operations including Paratrooper drops, supply and container drops. His pilots on operations were Warrant Officer Holloway and Flight Sergeant Green.

Part 1 - family background with information on relatives and family photographs.
Part 2 - war service of Flying Officer James Gordon Bennett Burnside flight engineer. Covers training as flight engineer. Then follows short descriptions. listing number sent and losses, of the 28 operation he flew. Targets include: Düsseldorf, Bochum, Oberhausen, Krefeld, Hamburg, Milan, Mannheim, Berlin (several times), Antheor Viaduct, Hagen submarine part factory, Hanover, Chalindrey, Revigny, Coutra, Kiel and Stuttgart. He then went to RAF Wigsley on a heavy conversion unit. Gives some details of his time there including a fatal crash at Lincoln, when civilian were also killed on the ground. Subsequently went to RAF Balderton and RAF Winthorpe from where he flew Cook's tour as his last sortie. Includes several photographs. Continues with account of crash of Stirling and biography of Squadron Leader Ronald George Churcher a friend of Jim. Jim Burnside was released from service on 1 January 1946. Includes portrait photograph of James Burnside, as well as maps showing airfields he served at, photograph of memorial plaque. Jim and wife.

H. W. Bennett’s RAF Observer’s and Air Gunner’s Flying Log Book, from 23 April 1937 to 14 June 1943, detailing training, operations and instructional duties as an Air Observer, Air Gunner, Bomb Aimer and Navigator. Includes bombing and photographic reconnaissance operations with 88 Squadron as part of the RAF Advanced Air Striking Force (AASF) in France 1939-1940, and later Bomber Command operations with 97 Squadron. Based at RAF North Coates Fitties (No. 10 Air Observers Course), RAF Feltwell (214(B) Squadron), RAF Boscombe Down (88(B) Squadron), RAF Acklington (No. 7 Armament Training School), RAF Evanton (No.8 Armament Training School). With 88 Squadron, as part of the Advanced Air Striking Force in France, he was based at: Auberive, Mourmelon-le-Grand, Moisy, Les Grandes Chappelles and Houssay. Following evacuation from France, bases are: RAF Sydenham (Belfast) (88 Squadron), RAF Swanton Morley (88 Squadron), RAF Coningsby (97 Squadron), RAF Lichfield (27 OTU) and RAF Whitchurch Heath (also known as RAF Tilstock) (81 OTU). Aircraft flown: Hawker Hart, Westland Wallace, Saro Cloud, Short Scion, HP Harrow, Hawker Hind, Fairey Battle, Douglas Boston, Blenheim, Manchester, Lancaster, Wellington, Whitley, and Anson. Various 88 Squadron targets with the AASF are recorded, such as gun posts, bridges, road/rail junctions, enemy troop column, convoy and concentrations. Records a total of 30 completed night operations with 97 Squadron. His pilots on operations were Flying Officer Riddell, Flying Officer Maclachlan, Warrant Officer Rowlands, Squadron Leader Dugdale, Flying Officer Rodley, Flight Sergeant Croppi, Flight Sergeant Crouch, and Sergeant Stephens. Targets in France, Germany, Italy, Norway and Poland are: Bordeaux, Bremen, Brest, Cologne, minelaying Danzig Bay, Duisburg, Dusseldorf, Essen, Frankfurt, Gdynia, Gironde, Hamburg, Kassel, Mannheim, Neustadt, Osnabruck, San Jean de Luis, Trondheim, Turin, Wilhelmshaven and Wismar.
