Flying log book for Harry Whitaker, bomb aimer and navigator, covering the period from 21 May 1942 to 22 November 1946. Detailing his flying training, operations flown and instructor duties. He was stationed at 10 Advanced flying Unit RAF Dumfries, 19 operational training Unit RAF Kinloss, 1652 Conversion Unit RAF Marston, 9 squadron RAF Waddington, 158 Squadron RAF Lissett, 635 Squadron RAF Downham Market, 17 Operational Training Unit RAF Silverstone, 156 Squadron RAF Whitton, 35 Squadron RAF Graveley and RAF Stradishall and 148 Squadron RAF Upwood. Aircraft flown in were Tiger Moth, Anson, Botha, Hampden, Blenheim, Magister, Lancaster, Whitley, Halifax, Wellington, York and Dakota. He flew a total of 59 operations, one night operation with 9 squadron, 13 night operations with 158 squadron, 19 Daylight and 26 night operations with 635 squadron. Targets were Pilsen, Berlin, Leipzig, Stuttgart, Schweinfurt, Augsburg, Le Mans, Frankfurt, Essen, Nantes, Haines St Pierre, Calais, Duisburg, Dortmund, Aachen, Rennes, Angers, Foret de Cerise, Cambrai, Lens, Renescure, Wizernes, Coquereaux, Nucourt, Vaires, Cagney, Courtrai, Fervay, Falaise, Tirlemont, Stettin, Russelsheim, Kiel, Soesterburg, Le Havre, Domburg, Gelsenkirchen, Cap Gris Nez, Sterkrade, Bergen, Saarbrucken, and Bari. He also flew 6 operation Dodge and a goodwill tour of the USA with 35 squadron. His pilots on operations were Flying Officer Hale, Flight Lieutenant Johnson, Flying Officer Catlin, Flight Lieutenant Hardy and Flight Lieutenant Stockwell.

In June year 2000 as a result of a brief ceremony of remembrance at St. Georges du Viévre I made the acquaintance of Mr. Ronald H. Riding, a veteran English airman of the R.A.F. who had passed through our region during the war in dramatic circumstances. He spent many weeks here during which time he discovered the "Belle France" to use his expression. This period was however absolutely not the most favourable time to make a visit.
Ronald was a navigator on his second tour of duty in a crew of seven airmen flying in a Lancaster aircraft of a reconnaissance squadron. It had been the duty for several weeks to fly these single night missions over occupied France in order to establish the location and movements of enemy troop concentrations.
Ronald who had volunteered for aircrew in 1941 aged 20 years had trained in Canada to be an observer/navigator. This mission which commenced during the night of the 5th/6th of June was similar to previous operations but it was however to leave a permanent mark on his life.
At 01.30 hours 6th June close to Rouen a shell from the anti-aircraft batteries hit the Lancaster in the middle of the fuselage leaving two crew dead and two wounded. The pilot navigator and rear gunner away from the point of impact were unhurt.
With the aircraft now on fire and having fixed parachutes to their wounded comrades they 'baled-out' from the doomed aircraft which crashed into a garden in La Mailleraye. The rear-gunner broke his leg on landing, was treated in hospital and became a prisoner of war. The pilot, a Canadian, was caught after a few days dressed in civilian clothes; because of this he was tortured in Le Havre by the Gestapo; transferred to Paris for further interrogation and finished the war in a prisoner of war camp in Poland.
Ronald after his jump into the darkness found himself hung up in the branches of a tree in the forest of Brotonne. He had lost his flying boots but he was alive. Before the coming of the dawn, not being able to walk far without boots he found a small forestry workers house. (1) When he knocked on the door the inhabitants chased him away. Their patriotism and help being limited at this time by fear of denouncement to the Germans; The penalty for helping allied airmen being death or minimum deportation to a concentration camp.
The next house where he asked for help was that of Madam Guégan. This brave woman hid Ronald for three or four days. Her son Jean Pierre of 16 years helped Ronald in the forest to find and bury his parachute. Whilst at her house he heard the news of a very historic event, he now understood why his mission to locate the movements of the German Panzer Divisions and observe the crossings of the River Seine were important. Ronald who knew an invasion was imminent had not been briefed and was ignorant of Operation "Overlord"; when he was escaping from his burning aircraft Allied parachutists were dropping at Ste Mère L'Eglise and Pegasus Bridge. The longest day had commenced.
After a rigorous interrogation as to his identity Ronald was taken in by the Maquis Surcouf of Pont-Aude Mer and hidden by their Chief Robert Le Blanc and Section Chief Edmond Floquet (Codename Grande Jules). Our region has preserved its "Bocage"; an area of small fields and woods protected by high hedges and criss-crossed by small roads; paths and tracks favourable for the hiding of the partisans. However it was also an area suitable for the concealment of the S.S. Division and the Gestapo hunting them. The Maquis of Pont-Aude Mer were very active in the region, their technique of Guerilla attacks depended on mobility of movement. Given information by the Gendarmes of the Division at St. Georges du Vièvre regarding the movements of the Nazis, the partisans dispersed and then regrouped to sabotage

and harass the enemy. Consequently Ronald changed his hiding place three times. He had successive "Residents" at Le Landin near Hanville, (2) at St. Martin-St. Firmin, (3) and at St. Siméon (4) where he met another English airman, a Russian deserter, some Italians and many partisans.
On the 14th July (Liberation Day in France) a "Wartime Alert". The Nazi's commenced a concentrated series of attacks and reprisals in the region. In Pont-Aude Mer they machine-gunned and killed several civilians. In Saint Etienne L'Allier, (5) they searched several houses and arrested the inhabitants. They intercepted and annihilated a patrol of partisans. In St. Georges Du Vièvre they arrested the Gendarmes and for several days they refused under torture by the Nazis pilice to reveal the network of the Maquis. Ronald and John, the other airman succeeded in escaping from the Maquis hide-out and with others found a safe hiding place near to Epagnes. (6) However soon came the final command for a general dispersal of all the partisans so that the Nazis were not able to trace the Maquis.
After several days of evasion, tired and hungry and so far having escaped detection because of their blue workman-like clothes and wooden shoes Ronald and John arrived at the small hamlet of Le Brevédent, (7) about 10 km N.E. of Lisieux. Intrigued by the strange behaviour of these two young men Mr. Jules Joigne understanding their secret and difficulty immediately welcomed them and hid them in his small farm. Once again they had found a "safe house".
At the end of July the Maquis at Thiberville (8) decided to help. For reasons of security they were moved, hidden in a horse and cart, and escorted by two young partisans, Jean Bréhart and Jean Dufay with a senior partisan Gaston Prévost riding ahead on a bicycle to secure the route passing by Barville. (9) On arrival at Thiberville they were first hidden in the workshop of M. Prévost, and then moved to the Pork Butchers Shop of Madam Sénéchal, another brave lady. Finally Thiberville was liberated by the Allies on the 24th August and so finished Ronald's adventure in Normandy.
But the story continues. Ronald returned to England and Became an Instructor. The war was not finished, but fortunately he never again had to use his parachute.
Unfortunately his comrade John after some rest and leave returned to operational duties. During a bombing raid over Germany his aircraft was shot down and he was not given a second chance.
Since the end of the war, Ronald loves to return to Normandy, he appreciates the peace and calm. Few people of our region remember the unknown heroes who took part in the Liberation of our Country. Ronald himself does not forget his comrades in the Resistance or his "French Helpers" who risked their lives to give him shelter. Now when he returns he sees the children of those who sheltered him, they were four and five years old in 1944. They have grown up now and their parents are dead.
Ronald also wishes to remember and visits the many graves of the Allied airmen who are buried in the cemeteries of the small villages where they fell from the sky. He stands and remembers because the remains of his four comrades of the Lancaster have never been found or identified.
It was in front of the Memorial Plaque recording the sacrifice of the four Gendarmes of St. Georges in Vièvre that I met for the first time Mr. Ronald H. Riding. That day in front of the old Police Station there were no more of us than the crew of his aircraft which fell in the forest of Brotonne on "D-Day" morning 6th June 1944.

Pilots flying log book one for L V Rosser, covering the period from 4 March 1939 to 19 July 1943. Detailing his flying training, operations flown and instructor duties. He was stationed at RAF Kidlington, RAF Woodley, RAF Grantham, RAF Kinloss, RAF Topcliffe, RAF Linton-on-Ouse, RAF Dishforth, RAF Abingdon, and RAF Chipping Warden. Aircraft flown were Magister, Anson, Hind, Whitley, Halifax, Wellington, Martinet, Lysander, Defiant, Wellington, Hind and Hurricane. Observer’s and air gunner’s flying log book one, for K A L Killeen, navigator, covering the period from 3 April 1943 to 2 August 1946. Detailing his flying training, operations flown and duties with communications flights. He was stationed at SAAF Queenstown, RAF Childs Ercall (RAF Peplow), RAF Wratting Common, RAF Feltwell, RAF Witchford, RAF Gatwick, Buc, Reims, Frankfurt, Detmold and Buckeburg. Aircraft flown in were Oxford, Anson, Wellington, Stirling, Lancaster, Auster, Proctor, Fiesler Storch and Messenger. He flew a total of 29 operations with 115 Squadron, 7 day and 22 night. His pilots on operations were Flight Sergeant Thornton, Flight Lieutenant Shepherd, Flight Lieutenant Woods, Flight Lieutenant Dexter, Flying Officer Gould, Flying Officer Standen, Flight Lieutenant Pressland, and Flying Officer Halcombe. Targets were Courtrai, Le Mans, Duisburg, Boulogne, Aachen, Angers, Calais, Caen, Lisieux, Dreux, Gelsenkirchen, Le Havre, Valenciennes, Villers Bocage, Beauvoir, Nucourt, Chalon-sur-Marne, Emieville, Aulnoye, Homberg, Kiel, Stuttgart, Amaye-Sur-Seulles, Foret de Lucheux, Lille, Lens, Brunswick and Hamel.

South African Air Force observer’s or air gunner’s log book for W G Didcote, covering the period from 15 December 1942 to 9 November 1945. Detailing his flying training, operations flown, instructor duties and duties with 90, 186, 218 and 83 Squadrons. He was stationed at SAAF Oudtshoorn, SAAF Port Alfred, RAF Millom, RAF Silverstone, RAF Wratting Common, RAF Waterbeach, RAF Witchford, RAF Chedburgh, RAF Manby, RAF Tuddenham, RAF Stradishall and RAF Coningsby. Aircraft flown in were Tutor, Botha, Anson, Oxford, Tiger Moth, Wellington, Stirling and Lancaster. He flew a total of 32 operations with 115 Squadron. His pilots on operations were Flight Sergeant Carter, Flight Sergeant Gibson, Pilot Officer Rowe-Evans, and Pilot Officer Atkin. Targets were Berlin, Leipzig, Stuttgart, Nuremberg, Laon, Aachen, Rouen, Cologne, Dusseldorf, Essen, Friedrichshafen, Chambly, Cap Gris-Nez, Courtrai, Le Mans, Duisburg, Dortmund, Trappes, Ouistreham, Lisieux, Paris, Dreux, Nantes, Le Havre, Valenciennes, L’Hey, Watten, Vaires and Nucourt. He also flew one Operation Exodus flight and one Operation Dodge flight.

W. Freeman’s RAF Navigator’s, Air Bomber’s and Air Gunner’s Flying Log Book, from 1st August 1943 to 29th November 1944, detailing training, operations and instructional duties as an air gunner. He was stationed at RAF Stormy Down (No. 7 Air Gunnery School), RAF Hixon and RAF Seighford (30 OTU), RAF Binbrook (1481 (B) Gunnery Flight), RAF Blyton (1662 Conversion Unit), RAF Hemswell (No. 1 Lancaster Finishing School), RAF North Killingholme (550 Squadron), RAF Faldingworth (300 Squadron) and RAF Manby (No. 1 Empire Air Armament School). Aircraft in which flown: Anson, Wellington, Halifax and Lancaster. He completed a total of 31 operations (26 night, 5 day), on the following targets in France and Germany: Aachen, Acheres, Aulnoye, Caen, Caumont, Chateau L’Hortier, Cologne, Dieppe, Dortmund, Dusseldorf, Emieville, Essen, Flers, Foret de Nieppe, Foret du Croc, Karlsruhe, Le Havre, Mailly-le-camp, Maintenon, Orleans, Rennes, Revigny, Rheims, Rouen, Scholven, Siracourt and Vierzon. His pilot on operations was Pilot Officer Jones.

5TH APRIL 1943 SAW ME LEAVE TWICKENHAM to REPORT FOR SERVICE IN THE ROYAL AIR FORCE. MOST OF MY FRIENDS HAD ALREADY BEEN CALLED UP, SO IT WAS A RELIEF TO BE JOINING THEM AT LAST. EVEN SO IT WAS A WRENCH TO BE LEAVING HOME. I MADE MY WAY TO LORDS CRICKET GROUND NEAR REGENTS PARK IN LONDON, UPON REPORTING TOGETHER WITH MANY MORE, WE FILLED IN MASSES OF PAPER WORK & WERE KITTED OUT. FIRST A MASSIVE KIT BAG & EVERYTHING ELSE WAS JUST SHOVED IN. IT WEIGHED A TON. AFTER LUNCH WE WERE PARADED IN SOME SORT OF ORDER & MARCHED TO VICEROY COURT. A RECENTLY BUILT LUXURY BLOCK OF FLATS, WITHOUT ANY LUXURIES. THE FLOORS WERE PLAIN CONCRETE, THE ROOMS CONTAINED 1 BED AND 1 CUPBOARD PER BODY, OF WHICH THERE WERE ABOUT 1 DOZEN PER ROOM. WE WERE INSTRUCTED TO UNPACK OUR KIT, CHECK EVERYTHING FOR SIZE. ANYTHING NOT FITTING WAS TO BE EXCHANGED THE FOLLOWING DAY. PARADE THE FOLLOWING MORNING, IN UNIFORM WAS AT 8 AM, BREAKFAST WAS AT 7 AM BED HAD TO BE MADE UP IN ARMY FASHION, READY FOR OFFICER’S INSPECTION. A DRILL SERGEANT WAS ASSIGNED TO INSTRUCT US AND INFORM US ABOUT WHAT WAS TO BE EXPECTED, THERE WAS ABOUT 20 OF US IN OUR FLIGHT. OUR FIRST DAY WAS TO BE TAKEN UP WITH MEDICAL & INJECTIONS. SO OFF WE WERE MARCHED TO SOMEWHERE NEAR THE ZOO. WE WERE A RAGGED LOT, BUT HAVING DONE TRAINING & DRILL WITH THE HOME GUARD IT WAS EASY FOR ME TO FIT IN. THE MEDICALS & INJECTIONS & LUNCH TOOK ALL MORNING QUITE A FEW OF THE LADS WERE OVERCOME & LAID OUT ON BENCHES. THE SERGEANT WASN’T TOO PLEASED AT THIS, HE [missing words]

STAY IN YOUR BILLET UNTIL I COME BACK” I TOLD THE OTHER LADS WHAT WAS GOING ON & THEY ACCEPTED THAT IT WAS BETTER THAN HANGING AROUND FOR A COUPLE OF HOURS. SO OFF WE WENT AND IN 15 MINUTES WERE BACK AT VICEROY COURT. THE LADS WERE GLAD TO LAY ON THEIR BEDS FOR THE REST OF THE AFTERNOON, I MANAGED TO SEE THE SERGEANT IN THE KITCHEN AND SCROUNGED TEA & BISCUITS, WHICH WENT DOWN WELL. THE DRILL SERGEANT WAS QUITE HAPPY ON HIS RETURN TO SEE ALL HIS FLIGHT WAS ACCOUNTED FOR & DISMISSED US UNTIL 8 AM PARADE THE FOLLOWING MORNING, BUT WE HAD TO REMAIN IN QUARTERS, NO TRIPS INTO TOWN. THE FOLLOWING MORNING WAS TAKEN UP WITH CLASSROOM WORK ON AIRFORCE PROCEDURE & WORKING. AFTERNOON FREE TO GET OVER THE EFFECTS OF THE INOCCULATIONS. THE FOLLOWING MORNING WAS TAKEN UP WITH DRILL & MARCHING, AFTER A WHILE THE SERGEANT PULLED ME OUT & TOLD ME TO TAKE OVER. HIS WORDS WERE “LETS SEE JUST WHAT YOU DO KNOW”. SO THE HOME GUARD TRAINING WAS COMING IN USEFUL & ALL WENT WELL. IT WENT SO WELL THAT FOR THE REST OF THE WEEK I WAS GIVEN THE JOB OF DRILLING THE OTHERS WHENEVER THE NEED AROSE. TO MY ASTONISHMENT THE LADS TOOK IT WELL – WE HAD NO TROUBLE. MAINLY BECAUSE AT THE END OF THE DRILL SESSION WE WERE ALWAYS FIRST IN THE QUEUE FOR MEALS. WE WERE POSTED to [missing words]

THE COURSE WORK WAS AIRCRAFT RECOGNITION MORSE CODE SIGNALLING & GENERAL DRILLING ETC. THIS LASTED 6 WEEKS. THOSE THAT PASSED THE TEST WERE POSTED TO BRIDGENORTH IN SHROPSHIRE. HERE WE WERE INSTRUCTED IN THE WORKINGS OF THE FRAZER NASH TURRET & THE BROWNING 303 MACHINE GUN, AIRCRAFT RECOGNITION WAS AGAIN A MUST. ALL WAS CLASSROOM WORK WITH A MAJOR EXAM AT THE END OF A FUTHER [sic] 6 WEEKS, THEN OFF TO STORMY DOWNS IN SOUTH WALES. STORMY DOWNS WAS APTLY NAMED. THE DROME WAS ON THE HILLS CLOSE TO THE SEA & THE AIRCRAFT WERE AVRO ANSONS WITH A GUN TURRET MIDWAY ALONG THE FUSELAGE. THE PILOTS WERE THOSE BEING RESTED AFTER A TOUR OF OPPERATIONS. [sic] ALL OF US CADETS HAD NOT FLOWN BEFOR [sic] & THE PILOTS TOOK GREAT DELIGHT IN THROWING THE AIRCRAFT ABOUT TO SEE IF THEY COULD MAKE US AIRSICK. IT WAS A QUEER MEETING. WE STOOD AROUND IN OUR VARIOUS GROUPS WIRELESS OPS, BOMB AIMERS, NAVIGATORS, & AIR GUNNERS THE PILOTS THEN APPROACHED EACH GROUP AND ASKED INDIVIDUALS IF THEY WOULD LIKE TO JOIN HIS CREW. BY THE TIME HE CAME TO THE GUNNERS HE HAD ALREADY GOT THE OTHERS TOGETHER. THE PATHFINDERS ORDERED THE PLANES TO KEEP THEIR POSITION AND THE AIR WAS BLUE WITH PILOTS REMONSTRATING, IT WAS PANDEMONIUM. OUR PLANE WAS APPROACHING THE AREA AT THE CORRECT TIME AND THE PILOT DECIDED TO CIRCLE SOME WAY AWAY FROM THE ACTION UNTIL WE HAD THE ORDER TO BOMB ON THE RED FLARE. THIS WAS ACCOMPLISHED WITH DUE HASTE AND ACCURACY. ONCE THROUGH THE TARGET WE WERE CONTINUALLY HARRASSED BY GERMAN FIGHTERS. ONE IN PARTICULAR CAME FROM AFAR AND I COULD SEE HIS TRACER BULLETS GOING OVER THE TOP OF US. AS HE GOT WITHIN RANGE I OPENED FIRE AND HE PEELED OFF. I KNOW SOME OF MY SHOT HIT HIM. HE WHEELED ROUND AND CAME IN AGAIN, WELL OUT OF MY RANGE. BUT AGAIN HIS TRACERS WERE HIGH AND I SAT THERE FULLY EXPECTING TO GET THE FULL IMPACT. OUR PILOT WAS TWISTING AND TURNING [missing words]

THEN ON THE 31ST JULY WE WERE TO DO OUR 30TH TRIP AND THE LAST ONE OF OUR FIRST TOUR. THEN ON TO 14 DAYS LEAVE. A detailed account of Bill's time in the RAF, starting with drill at Lords, training at Bridlington and Bridgnorth then RAF Stormy Down. He passed the course and after seven days leave reported to Hixon for crewing up. He discusses training and his social life. He then transferred to Binbrook then Blyton, Hemswell, Elsham Wolds and N Killingholme.
He describes individual operations in detail. He and his crew were transferred to Faldingworth where the condition of their aircraft was poor. These were quickly replaced with new aircraft. His crew were successful and survived their 30 operations never to meet up again.
He concludes his memoir with seven tailender tales.

Description
An account of the resource
Frederick Pick’s Wireless Operator’s Flying Log Book covering the period from 05 September 1943 to 07 April 1945. Detailing his flying training and operations flown as wireless operator. He was stationed at RAF Yatesbury (2 Radio School), RAF Millom (2 OAFU}, RAF Upper Heyford (16 OTU), RAF Syerston (5 LFS), RAF East Kirkby (57 Squadron) and RAF Balderton (227 Squadron) and RAF Strubby (227 Squadron). Aircraft flown in were Dominie, Proctor, Anson, Wellington, Stirling and Lancaster. He flew on seven night four day operations with 57 Squadron and 19 night and three day operations with 227 Squadron, to Le Havre, Darmstadt, Stuttgart, Boulogne, Bremerhaven, Munchen - Gladbach, Wilhelmshaven, Bremen, Flushing sea dykes, Brunswick, Nuremburg, Walcheren, Harburg, Duren, Ladbergen, Munich, Heilbron, St Vith, Houffalize, Gravenhorst, Politz, Merseberg, Brux, Siegen, Horten, Lutzendorf, Hamburg, Wesel, Dortmund and Molbis. Total 33. His pilot on operations was Flight Lieutenant Robertshawe. On an operation to Munich on the 26 November his main navigation aid caught fire. Having extinguished the fire he used what equipment he had to assist the navigator to bomb successfully and return to base. He was awarded a Green Endorsement on 12 January 1945 by the Group Captain O.C. RAF Balderton.

Royal Australian Air Force flying log book for Robert Jubb, pilot. Covers the period from 23 November 1942 to 25 August 1946. Details his training, operations and post-war flying. He was based at RAF Bibury, RAF Lulgate Bottom, RAF Moreton in Marsh, RAF Riccall, RAF Holme-on-Spalding Moor and RAF Driffield. Aircraft flown were Tiger Moth, Wirraway, Oxford, Wellington, Halifax, Beaufighter and C-47. Serving wih 76 Squadron and 462 Squadron he flew 32 operations; 12 at night and 20 daylight. Not all targets are legible but those that are include Foret de Croc, Foret de Nieppe, Villers Bocage, Dijon, Brest, Sterkrade, Soesterberg, Le Havre, Gelsenkirchen, Kiel, Boulogne, Dusseldorf, Bochum, Duisburg, Essen and Cologne. Two flying log books for navigators, air bombers, air gunners and flight engineers for E.W. Cropper. Between them they cover the period 17 May 1943 to 6 October 1950. There is much overlap between them and an original log book was destroyed by fire.

Collection concerns Pilot Officer Robert Venter Jubb DFC (b 1922, 426609 Royal Australian Air Force), a Halifax pilot he flew operations on 76 and 462 Squadrons between July and November 1944 when his aircraft was shot down. He evaded capture but remainder of crew were caught and became prisoners of war. Collection contains his log book, newspaper cuttings, photographs (including his target photographs), documents, correspondence and operational route maps.
