28th Dec 1942.
My Darling,
If ever you get this note one of two things will have happened. I will either not be alive or will be a prisoner of war. In either case darling I shall be leaving you a great responsibility with our two lads, but I know that you will always do your best for them. Please dont [sic] coddle them. Many times they will do things that make you fear for them & their safety, but if they have the confidence to carry out there [sic] exploit dont [sic] try to hinder them You must encourage them to be self reliant.
[page break]
[underlined] 2 [/underlined]
If I should not come out of this war alive I would like them to complete [corrected] their [/corrected] vocational training then travel abroad if possible, & doing anything if necessary for say two, or 3 years. They will in that way gather a wealth of experience and get an outlook on life that will get them anywhere. Again dont [sic] forget to impress them that they will get nothing without working for it & that they will only get out of life what they put in it.
In conclusion dearest all I have ever done & do is for you & the boys although I have many times annoyed, disappointed & let you down.
I have always loved you & always will
Cheerio dearest
Yours Ian.

My Darling
Many thanks for your short note Received to day [sic]. Well I have now not operated for two nights & I dont [sic] think I shall be operating tomorrow either. The last op was Stuttgart. It was quite good too. We have had about six new crews in so that should relieve the pressure a bit anyway
I have one disappointment for you & that is my leave has been put back into April [corrected] about [/corrected] the 9th I think.
I have heard from Rex again. He told me that he had been to Gt Wyrley & had been chasing the Lawyers. Apparently there is some hitch with the Inland Revenue people, They apparently want some more duties.
[page break]

Poor old Bert is still getting trouble isnt [sic] he [deleted] re [/deleted]
I feel terribly fed up at times. That is one reason why I dont [sic] mind a lot of “ops” because the time just flies & one has no time to reflect. At times like this one at least I get awfully homesick.
Last night our crew went to Lincoln, The Skipper has his wife & daughter up for 3 days and I met them last night I felt miserable after wards though I wished you were here.
Still by my next leave should have finished my tour of ops & we can do something then to celebrate
If I can I shall get my
[page break]
[inserted] 3 [/inserted]
11 remaining trips in about 20 days then I shall come on leave then. What will happen afterwards I dont [sic] know. Where they will send me God knows. I think I might try to get transferred to Ferry Command. I dont [sic] fancy instructing anyway
I am pleased the boys are keeping well. It seems funny to have you talking about Davids [sic] School Clothes. Also I hope you have not been too upset by having your tooth out as you say you are doing tomorrow
Well my love Ill close now & see what is for supper
All my Love
Always yours

Dearest,
Many thanks for yours of this morning also the 16 /= Cheque, which I received at Wickenby before coming here.
Well first of all Ill [sic] give you the Gen. My Skipper was posted here as Flight Commander. So now him being the exalted Rank of Squadron Leader he can be a bit dictatorial so he said he wanted his own crew from Wickenby with him. So here we are.
This is a very nicely

Situated spot just a ten minutes bus ride from Grimsby & a bus every 20 minutes. The grub (up to present) is better than at Wickenby., but The Billets (2 Sgts in a Room) are 2½ miles from the Drome & ¾ mile from the mess.
The Billets themselves are very nice really 2 beds 2 chairs Table & Stove & Polished Lino on the floor.
I think I shall like it here.
Last night I went into Grimsby & to the flicks.
The suburbs of Gy [sic] are lovely The nicest approach of any town Ive [sic] been too [sic].
The town itself

[underlined]3[/underlined]
is a bit Dingy though Reasonalby (sic) clean. The Shopping area is spread out over the [corrected] town [/corrected] & in consequence The (sic) are patches of Drab [corrected] warehouses [/corrected] in between.
Adverting to your letters I have not yet written to Aunt Jessie but will do so tomorrow.
Now as regards the car. It will not be worthwhile licencing [sic] it after all because I shall soon have finished Ops & then will not be able to any Juice In the meantime I will write to Ghents. See what is happening

The insurance you have seems alright as it covers it while standing idle. By the way my leave still stands at 10th of April (I should not have many trips left to do then. I hope)
I hope you can [corrected] read [/corrected] this Pencil because I have no ink here yet. Oh! I did not tell you we have a Radio in our Room to [sic]. It is not fixed up yet but that is my first job tomorrow.
Today I have been down to Marham near Swaffham

My Darling
Just a little note to let you know I have written to the G.A. & returned them receipt Well one more trip done. We went to ST Nazaire on Monday it was a good trip & we got a good photo again. Scarcely any opposition at all. Just how I like it.
Did I write you yesterday I think I did? If I did I [smudged] probably [/smudged] told you that we had been to ST Nazaire anyway. Time is so funny I am damned if I know what day it is at all now. Still Ill [sic] start this & leave it open in case you write tomorrow
I only know that my leave
[page break]
seems to be a hell of a while coming round this time. I seem to have been back on duty ages this time. Gosh & I do miss you so. More after each leave than before I think. It is nearly six years since the great day (or night) & when we got married. I thought that after 15 years of digs I would at last settle in my own home. And out of that six years all we have had was about 2 yrs [years] I am getting browned off with it I shall be bloody glad when the whole show is finished.
My Boys too. I am missing all there [sic] little devilments. Still when one thinks of Harold Ashton, & Bert Burgess I suppose I have a [corrected] hell [/corrected] of a lot to be thankful for too.
Well my dear I must close now & get some shut eye
Good night darling. X X
[underlined] 24/3/43 [/underlined]

Well dearest no letter so Ill [sic] post this off.
I shall not be flying tonight again so I am going to Binbrook (our Parent Station) to get some blue changed if Pos.

Dearest, [deleted] honey [/deleted]
Many thanks for your letter of Monday. I am glad you have the car back. The Price was not bad but I would have made him wait for his money. Be careful when you are driving (By the way have you heard any more about the Austen?))
Now I still dont [sic] know whether I have failed that exam. I know I have passed one, so I cant [sic] say how long Ill [sic] be here yet Ill [sic] let you know as soon as possible though.
Today it has rained the first time for [indecipherable] we [deleted] when [/deleted] went to Penzance. I do miss you so there is only one consolation. When
[page break]
this course is finished there will be this worry. Just work your allotted hrs then you are [underlined] free [/underlined]
[underlined] Thursday [/underlined]
I could not get this finished off last night dear so I am doing it [corrected] now [/corrected]. I still have heard nothing
I expected a letter today. I dont [sic] know whether you have written or not but the mails have been all beggared up lately owing to the raids on Plymouth
If you could get D down here it would be nice but it is no use doing anything about it yet though. I could get you a warrant for travelling & you can get for ½ fare then. I would think that would be about a £1 or 30/=
Well Ill [sic] have to go now the Corporal is yelling

Dearest
Many thanks for your letters. I have not Received the parcel though. If you have sent it I may get it on Monday night. Has Pop done my watch yet? By this time you should be having your lessons with Arthur. If the weather up there is similar to this it will be grand. Yesterday was a scorcher. I spent all the morning on the beach with a book (I had to work in the afternoon though)
Well whether I have passed my exam or not I am off the course now & have re mustered as an Aero Engine Fitter so will in due course be getting transferred. I hope to Cannock. It may be Blackpool though. That would not be so bad either. Still I may be my luck to be sent to Scotland or some God forsaken spot off the map altogether. I cant [sic] say how long it will be before I go. It may be next week or it may be a month
[page break]
The Reason I re mustered as an Aero Engineer Fitter is because it is the best pay.
My Ear was the [corrected] cause [/corrected] of this re mustering I had another Medical Exam on Friday and they spotted it then the M.O. here is very thorough. He wanted to know how they had missed it at Polegate.
I have signed the Prop’l [sic] Form & am posting it today. Let me know how much they want before you remit the cash, and By the way did Spann sign that Certificate?
I received a letter from Dad yesterday too. he enclosed a couple of Stamps and 2/6 PO from Grandad.
He was quite perturbed our David so let him know how the “Wikka Chap” is getting on.
I must really close now dear because I am doing Guard duty today & it is almost my turn to go on.
Love to all
Yours ever
Ian.

Darling,
Many thanks for your long letter to hand today, [corrected] By [/corrected] the time you get this I shall be thinking about getting my stuff together & be wondering what the inside of a new camp is like I am sitting on P.A.R. Station with an hr & half to wait for a train to Bristol. I am on my way to HEDNESFORD. and I have got a 24 hr pass so that I can have best part of a day at Wyrley. How do you like it? Now you had better write to me at Dads for the week end. Then I can let you have my full address when I know it. There is one regret about leaving Newquay. Summer has just started the weather has taken up after being rough for nearly 14 days.
[page break]
Well I shant [sic] get my 7 days leave now for some time. I dont [sic] even know if I shall get 48 hrs off here. I doubt it? but any way you can come over to Wyrley. & I surely manage an odd sleeping out Pass now and again
I am anxious to see the Boys as well as you especially Tony. He [corrected] must [/corrected] be getting very interesting now.
By the way it looks as though you had better pay that 18/9 for the car insurance suspected what was the trouble really.
It seems funny that you have not heard from the Civil Liabilities sextion [sic]. They will probably have been in touch with the J.C. I though
[page break]
[underlined] 3 [/underlined]
I told you that I had 1 1/2 hrs wait at this place well I have a 6 hr wait at Bristol. I left Newquay at [corrected] 20.00 [/corrected] and will arrive at Wyrley at 13.30 hrs tomorrow.
This is a hell of a spot to get to and from. I shant [sic] be sorry to leave for that reason really all through it was so quiet & peaceful. [underlined] (more or less) [/underlined]
I have no idea how long the course lasts but I expect I shall be at Cannock Chase for 3 months or so anyway.
If the weather is good it should be a treat although the Flight Lft [sic] in charge of stores to let me that it was not a good station. Anyway if the grub is not much I am only a [corrected] 3 [/corrected] hour ride from Dads. It might pay me to get my
[page break]
Byke [sic] out there still Ill [sic] see when I get [underlined] there [/underlined]
The Officers here have been really good. The C.O. got me this 24 hr pass & a travel warrant etc [sic] & I also found out yesterday that he had requested me to be posted to there. Good of him wasnt [sic]?
Well Ill [sic] have to close now the light is bad & I cant [sic] do much in this gloom
All my love, & Ill [sic] see you soon sometime
All yours
Ian.

Darling
Thanks for the letter, I am pleased to hear that you managed a lesson or two. I would not go to Wyrley with Eric though it might seem funny to them. If you write to Dad’s ask him to see Fred & [corrected] Exchange [/corrected] some coupons for some transport coupons which you can cash anywhere, you should obtain a (Form RMS 5) to send for some to the Regional controller & state that your Dad covers about 90 miles a week. The consumption of that Morris is about 33 M. PG.
I hope you can read this I am sunbathing on the Beach. I have finish my work for today
[page break]
so I have lopped it. It is not so hot today though. Yesterday I was here well after noon & am getting as brown as a berry. In fact my face is copper coloured now.
I am having a grand time now I work like hell in the morning & then I am free in the afternoons I wish you & the kids were here too though. I have had a swim although the atlantic [sic] is a bit too chilly for me yet. If it was not the fact that 99% of the people here were in uniform you would think it was the holiday period at its peak with the crowds on the Beach.
There are crowds of kids here umpteen schools have been evacuated from the London area
[page break]
[underlined] 3 [/underlined]
Also there are Mothers and women too so the place is generally [corrected] crowded [/corrected] out There is at the moment a crowd of convent kids [corrected] buzzing [/corrected] around! & I can hardly hear myself think.
This scribble is far worse than my than my usual I know but I cannot get in a really comfortable position for writing
By the way cant [sic] you get any more tobacco now? I was rather disappointed that there was none in with my pullover which is very nice & Thank you for the same XXX. Oh! I passed the maths exam of it all (only just) & what do you think I came out top in PSycological [sic] Test. Competing against Mas BSc & Dr Ph etc [sic] also top in the Antigas [sic] exam & if I had taken the Aircraft Recognition exams I would have had 100%. I liked [indecipherable] stuck I would have a choice well into
[page break]
[underlined] 4 [/underlined]
By the way. You have never mentioned my watch once?
Will you ask pop to have a look at that Pocket Watch in the Dressing table draw I think that it just needs fingers.
[corrected] Boy [/corrected] Jove you’d Larf [sic] I [corrected] have [/corrected] just had a bunch of Br [indecipherable] of any things park their blooming carcasses next to me here (From a finishing school). One has just informed the world at large that she must just simply finish orf [sic] a letter to her Grandpopah [sic]! Dear oh Dear! Isnt [sic] Laife [sic] in this awful place Vaile! [sic] Gor [sic] Blimey!!!
I had to pack up this noon I couldnt [sic] stick that crush
[page break]
[inserted] 5 [/inserted]
So when I was coming Back to the hotel I was collared by this Sargeant [sic] to check over some stores so could not finish this note off.
In a way it is a good thing because I may have some news in the morning as to whether I am likely to be moved soon or not so Ill [sic] tell you if I can do
I have heard the news of the raids in L pool my word they have had it bad & of course it is worrying with you being so near too I shall be glad when that shelter is done.
By the way have you used that Gal [Gallon] of Petrol in [corrected] shed [/corrected] (The Bottom tin behind the door)
That Battery in the car is not much good. Run it on FULL CHARGE all the while & ask Pop to listen out for a new Battery (second hand) Still if you can manage a little
[page break]
longer Ill [sic] see what I can do.
Maybe Eric Woodward can get one? ask him. By the way you had better get Eric some Cigs or [underlined] something [/underlined]
[underlined] Thursday [/underlined]
Well I have been to the Orderly Room & the nearest they can tell me is that it may be a month or it may only be a fortnight before I am moved but they could not give me any [corrected] date [/corrected] when. I would think anyway that I would be nearer home.
I have just got your letter & I have already replied to
Q [underlined] 1 [/underlined] Re extra petrol
Q [underlined] 2 [/underlined] Re Remittance. That is the first time I had heard that you know how much you had to pay. Pay £ [underlined] 2-15.0 [/underlined] stating that 10/- had been deducted for Agency Commission.
Qu [underlined] 3 [/underlined] I have replied to this sometime back & said it was a good idea.
Love to all

Dearest,
Just a line in haste to tell you that I have got this far. I arrived here last night after not too bad a journey that at first did not look too promising.
I am afraid Dad is very poorly & looks it. He has gone as thin as a couple of match sticks.
It is good to hear that Tony is getting better it is not like him to be poorly though

My Dearest
Just a line [smudged] or two [/smudged] to tell you that I am still OK. I half expected a letter from you today. Still I s’pect [sic] it will be here tomorrow. I have enquired about those coupons for Pygamas [sic], and find out that none are issued, except of course to officers. The only coupons available to men of the services are 3 a year for Handkerchiefs. / I think it is a lousy trick Why should they diffentiate [sic] between Officers & Men to that extent they are all in the job together.
Further they have sheets to sleep in & men dont [sic] get that priveledge [sic] & comfort.
What do you think of the state of things in [corrected] Egypt? [/corrected] after 3 years of war we still havent [sic] got a quarter of the staff we need to defend our selfs [sic] never mind attacks it is a disgusting state [deleted] ey [/deleted] of affairs. I am afraid that the
[page break]
type of gov’t [sic] we have in this country is doomed after the war for ever. Thank goodness. The Germans were quite right when they said we were decadent. We certainly seem to have lost that iniative [sic] and drive that used to see us through. The Govt will loose [sic] us an awful lot of lives & territory yet before they wake up [deleted] that [/deleted] to the fact that it is action & not speeches that is wanted
Well love I must close now but I am missing you badly again this time. Still it wont [sic] be long until I am over again so till then all my love
Yours Ian

SHETLANDS 25-8-42
Dearest,
Tomorrow I expect you would get the letter that I wrote on Saturday telling you that I had arrived here. It is rather difficult to write a letter because there is so much that is VERBOTEN! Such as comments on the local weather & description of the camp & my work here etc. I can’t tell you much about the Island itself because I have not been
[page break]
[inserted][underlined] 2 [/underlined] [/inserted]
out of camp yet. However I hope to have a day at Lerwick before I leave.
The other chap & I are working like the devil to get our job finished as soon as possible so that we can get back to our own station but dont [sic] think we will be away before next Wednesday. However if you write put your name and address on the back in case of none [sic] delivery. I will wire you when I am about to leave then you will
[page break]
[inserted][underlined] 3 [/underlined] [/inserted]
know where to write to. By the way I should get your letters quicker than you would get mine. It is a two day post up to here.
How are the boys behaving now they are back. I suppose that they have told Grandad all about there [sic] adventures in the sea, on bykes [sic], & on Donkeys etc. I am anxious to know what they did on their last week. & what you did too. By the way how would to [sic] like a pair of “Fair Isle” gloves? I am not promising anything definite though yet.
[page break]
[inserted] [underlined] 4 [/underlined] [/inserted]
There was a funny [deleted] indect [/deleted] incedent [sic] this morning we get the Daily News broadcast at 8 AM over the camp loud speaker system. When it was switched on this morning there was a Record on playing “Home sweet home”.
Well dearest I must Ring off now & Roll into bed.
All my love to you & the Boys.
Yours Ian.

Dearest,
Just a line or two while I am waiting for a line from you. I have not heard since Friday. I was hoping for one today.
Well what do you think of his news now. I bet Pop is pleased. I hope we can keep it up now. Although if we get them out of Africa without opening up a second front It will release a lot of his Airforce to Bomb us, but that will be after they have recuperated their losses in Egypt which have been tremendous. Of course their powers of recuperation will be getting less & less now.
I am still as busy as hell now still I am enjoying the Course. It is the barrack life that is so upsetting I get awfully depressed if I stick around too much. I can understand Chaps continually going on the beer & getting hectic when They get away from their Camp, and those chaps going mad when they come off the Submarines.
By the way have you heard anything from Grandad? Did you write him about those coupons. Oh. would you send to Ipswich? or oblige me if you
[page break]
dont want to send from there as I have had a letter Again & I cant do anything myself for a fortnight anyway. Well I must close now & turn into my little narrow bed. so Good night darling. I wish I were actually saying that dont you?.

Dearest,
Thanks for the parcel & leter [sic] which I received yesterday (also the Wine). The delay was at this end & the Waaf [sic] officer who is in charge of the Roy’ [sic] [Royal] Mail Dept [Department] had gone on leave without appointing a deputy. She was recalled yesterday & hauled over the Coals. I contributed to the agony by reporting my delay etc.
Thanks again for the Pills wallet and Cig case not forgetting the onion too I am looking forward to my supper tonight. We are still quite busy here yet. I have not yet done any Cross Country flying may do a short trip tomorrow though. We are likely to pass near Delamaine on one of our trips but as I have
[page break]
The Sq [Squadron] /Leader for a pilot I doubt if I can get him to “Woble [sic] his wings” Still we will see what we can do when the time comes.
The weather here at the moment is mild here but mainly Misty which rather spoils local flying. The other chaps have come back off leave in the billet so things will be a bit more [corrected] cheerfull [/corrected] although they are not too cheerful as you may guess.
I was pleased to hear that the boys were OK & of course yourself. That Cold cure is really a preventative. It is “MIDGLEY’S ANTI-GRIPPE” sold by Taylors or Timothy Whites. Excellent stuff
Touching would [sic] my [indecipherable] is better so I shall not have to take any pills for a bit I hope. Well dearest I will close now

Dear Mrs. Wynn,
We very much regret to have to tell you that no information has come through regarding your husband Sergeant I.A. Wynn. No.1024298, although full enquiries are being made on your behalf.
We feel it is only right, however, that you should be informed of the grievous report which has reached us through the International Red Cross Committee at Geneva, concerning the crew of which your husband was a member, for although the information which this contains can but add most deeply to your already great anxiety, we believe that you would not wish it to be withheld.
A telegram from the organisation at Geneva reports that according to the official German Authorities, Pilot Officer G. Russell and Pilot Officer H.N. Petts lost their lives on May 26th. 1943, and also one member of the crew whose identity it had not yet been possible to establish. On receipt of this tragic news the Air Ministry has posted the two airmen whose names are given as "Missing, believed Killed in Action" but since the crew consisted of seven men you will understand that until further information is forthcoming the remaining five members must still be classified as 'missing'.
We realise what this report will mean to you, and we wish you to know that every effort is being made in order to

Dear Mrs. Wynn,
Although we are still, unhappily, without any news of your husband, Sergeant I A. Wynn No. 1024298 Royal Air Force, we are writing to tell you of a further report which we have now received through the International Red Cross Committee about Pilot Officer Russell and Flying Officer Petts, who were flying in the same aircraft.
The German authorities state that the burial of these two officers took place in the Military Cemetery at Venlo, Province of Limburg, Holland, thus indicating in what locality the disaster had occurred. We believe that you would wish to have this statement in your possession, and it is for this reason we are sending it on to you. Unfortunately no information was given regarding the other members of your husband’s crew.
You will know that our efforts on your behalf are continuing and anything which may come to our knowledge concerning your husband or any of his companions will be passed to you

WAS/GG/RAF/C.7289
6th January, 1945.
Dear Mrs. Wynn,
We are writing to tell you of a further sad report which has reached us by cable from the International Red Cross Committee in connection with our enquiries about the crew in which your husband, Pilot Officer I. A. WYNN, was serving.
The Organisation at Geneva has sent an authoritative statement from the Official Bureau in Berlin that three airmen flying in this aircraft, of whose names they were not aware at the time, were laid to rest in the Military Cemetery at Venlo. The numbers 280, 281 and 298 are quoted for the graves of these crew-members, who would seem to rest near to their companions, Pilot Officer Russell and Flying Officer Petts.
We realise how this tragic information, coming so long afterwards, must needs add to your anxiety and sorrow; but we can only tell you the German reports about those serving together are often sent through at long intervals, and it is unhappily not unusual for later records of burial to reach us which apply to airmen not originally notified as having lost their lives.
P.T.O.

The present military pressure around Venlo will not allow [inserted] of [/inserted] our continued enquiries through channels open to us in that area. We are, however, assured the War Graves Registration & Enquiry Section of the war Office will be making full investigations there whenever this becomes possible, and will forward their records to the Air Ministry who will inform the next-of-kin.
While we are sending you this grievous news with the greatest reluctance, realising its possible implications and what they will mean to you, we do not believe you would wish us to keep back any record we may receive about the crew and hope you will forgive the pain our letter cannot but bring you.
With again the assurance of our deep sympathy at this time.
Yours sincerely,

LONDON, S.W.1.
16 January, 1948.
Dear Mrs. Wynn,
It is not without hesitation that I refer again to the death in action of your husband, but I know you will wish to be informed of a report concerning his reburial which we received recently from the Army Graves Service in Belgium.
It has been found necessary to vacate the cemetery at Venlo and all the graves have now been transferred to the British Military Cemetery at Jonkersbosch, a suburb of Nijmegen. It is regretted that no prior notice of the transfer could be given but I feel sure you will appreciate the advantages of the reburial policy.
Where adequate arrangements cannot be made for the permanent upkeep of graves, the Army authorities arrange for reburial in special Service cemeteries where facilities are available for their proper care in perpetuity by the Imperial War Graves Commission. Your husband’s remains, together with those of Squadron Leader Turgel, Flying Officers Harvey and Marnoch and Sergeant Hudson, have accordingly been laid to rest in graves 8 and 9 of row C, plot XXIV.
The new graves have been registered in their names and when the time comes to replace the existing temporary crosses by permanent headstones, you will of course be consulted by the Secretary of the Commission regarding the wording of the inscription.
I do hope this somewhat belated information will be of comfort to you.
Yours sincerely
