[underlined]POEM – “NOW IT WOULD SEEM A TIME”[/underlined]
Now it would seem a time for living:
Dead pinpoint maggot
Pricked on harsh leafback’s horn
The invulnerable worm bleeds
In his months’ granary.
Now it would seem a time for forgetting
Death and the discord of
My shaking body shocked limbs
The timeless wandering oh miracle
Of sleep in bleeding eyes
Moon’s malice ice-breathed
Salt of sickness strained
To some mother’s child
Unstroked hair burnt
Unloved under the polished tomb-arc
The valley of his rapid sky
And drug my lung-cells
Stimulus to mothwing heart
In adrenalin safety.
Now it would seem no time to mourn:
I holding no venom no fire-splash
No dreamsbreath under
The rippled mood’s ecstacy
I my strawthoughts plaiting
To their fast unconscious cowardice
Of my patterned dark.

[underlined]TRANSMUTATION [/underlined]
Often, oh! Often about this time,
Now, at this most magic hour
When dusk steals home like a tired child
On tides of daylight ebbing low,
The trees are stilled to a dream of rhyme
Held in the earth’s last golden glow
And the shadowy air is soft and mild,
And night seals flower from sleepy flower –
Often, alone, I lie and see
That stars have pierced the dusty blue
Till, silent in its witchery
The moon comes up. And I think of you,
How you’ve loved me under the stillness of light
(O! dreaming eyes and your broad brow!)
Bathed in a breathless quietness
When time was flowing for our delight ……
That you were with me, with me now! …...
Then rocking in flames of loneliness
The quivering dreams of beauty fall –
I hate each monosyllabic star,
And the once-loved face of the moon’s become
Dispassionate, impersonal –
A clammy death-mask, sweating, dumb;
Or a livid sore, or a leprous scar.

[underlined]THOUGHT [/underlined]
We strive for those high thoughts we cannot find :
Are cruelly bound by the inadequacy,
Not of the thought, but of the power to express.
We have eyes, and yet we cannot see –
The blessing of a procreative mind
Inherited from birth, and yet in gloom we grope.
Our thoughts are as lakes in a wilderness
Made parched and arid by our weakness’ sun;
Or as a man, who with great things undone,
And being old and tired, and nearly blind,
Beats angrily upon the bare walls of his room.

[underlined]HAUNTINGS[/underlined]
Is there no rest? All day they walk with me;
By night their unseen forms engulf my bed
And whisper through the dark, “It is unjust
You should be living still. We are the dead
Whom you call friends –why did you steal apart
And leave us? Why did you give in? Our trust
Was in your faithful hands and yet you failed.”
Once more I wake, and fill the room with light
And smoke a cigarette. The homely place
Takes on new calm, and my uneasy heart
Comes, lulled at fresh remembrance of your face
To peace.
But they’ll come back, another night.

[underlined]”IF I SHOULD EVER DIE”[/underlined]
If I should ever die, my love,
And leave you all alone,
Don’t sink me in a narrow grave
Nor raise for me a stone;
And let no man with book and prayer
Commend my soul to heaven,
That would be most depressing, dear,
More than dying, even!
I don’t like funeral services,
And, what is worse by far,
I suffer (on my mother’s side)
From claustrophobia!
I’d hate to have my friends and you
Clad in your clothes of crepe,
Weeping sorrowful tears for
My emaciated shape!
No! Take my ashes to the hills,
The wild hills that I love,
And scatter my dust upon the moor
With the painted sky above –
There, I’d be always near you,
And by you gaily flying ----
----But, I am laughing and glad and young,
And hold no thought of dying!

[underlined]THE FENS[/underlined]
We are not lost; beyond no far recall,
Who have loved the singing of the night
And won it surely; strongly held
Its quiet splendour to our hearts and deep,
Laughing its greatness to each conquered star;
Nor lonely to the sibilance of the wind
Across the paths of dark; but free
And lighter than a breeze on silent hills,
Than mist on meadows ………
From afar,
Lovely and great as ever, still we find
Constant to each, high sanctuary
In the supernal ways of love, and undispelled,
A beauty stronger than death that fills
The night with peace. Your hands creep
About my head and hold me. An infinite
Calm, a dreamless quietness lies over all.

[underlined]CHESS[/underlined]
Huddled round stove
To warmth of knee
I plot pent cunning
In harmless
Brain murder
Noting his hair
Above taut mind
Needlessly
I see the
Tumbled swinging
Smoke from cigarette
And burn scar on
My hand
Master a while
The power I take
I match brain vigour
To latent wood
And wonder thinking
Me futile
Less than pawn
Knowing no mover
And no win.

[underlined]IN FEVER[/underlined]
I would go to you now
And find release
From the burning thongs of fever
Searing my clouded eyes ……
I would go to you – the land
Of quietness, my only peace,
And lie for ever
Under tranquil skies
Of your cool hand,
Where gentle fingers
Smooth my sweating brow ……
If it were my last endeavour,
I would go where life lies,
Shunning not pain’s increase:
Sick and night-orphaned,
Safe from where delirium lingers,
I would go to you now –
Into your arms’ cool oblivion ……

[underlined]THE FULLNESS OF LIVING[/underlined]
(A prayer before action)
“….. But lovers in war-time
Better understand
The fullness of living
With death close at hand.”
Grant me, O Lord, once more to be with her,
To make my final homage at her breast;
And let me keep my night-long vigil there,
Before I am by hate and violence blessed.
Let me be brave. Shape though my lips to smile
And comfort her, well knowing I am weak;
And may she see no vision of despair
Within my eyes, and may my fear not speak.
All but our love, all else save that deny,
Let us forget, but for one shining hour,
We are to part; and through our deathless love
Teach us that death has lost its awful power.
Then, should I fall
Amidst the coming strife,
I shall have known how beautiful,
How beautiful was life.

[underlined]SONNET[/underlined]
[underlined]TO A DEAD POET[/underlined]
You died too soon. We could have been good friends,
And shared our youth; strode bravely hand to hand,
Felt the sweet pangs of danger, worshipped truth,
And the calm earth, and sunlight on the land;
Heard larksong in the clear air, found fierce new joy
Majestically, in winds, the scourge of rain
And the long, tremendous hush of sunset; shared
The quivering immensities of pain,
Know each, the haven of our hearts’ desires.
Yet the strange fates, for all of this, denied
My knowing you. But steadfastly I hope
When life is done, when I, too, shall have died,
I’ll see you there, enthroned - - - most individually
At peace, among the endless changing s of the sky.

[underlined]FUGUE - WINTER[/underlined]
We as one lying
Hollow locked from winter
Striving to penetrate
The eastward bluedrift
Singing by naked woods
And the interpolated
Spume of cloud
Ignore time’s setting
The bite of the weather
Hung in the bluechill
Of thin westwind.
We eye to eye burning
Ignore the half hidden
Grief of tomorrow
Stifle the bonebite
Melted to frozen earth
With load grass crying.
We as one living
Restrain the frantic hour
Analyse its careless haste
To hide in
The minutes flying.
We striving to break
The hours’ dark neurosis
To stay
The inevitable pendulum.

[underlined]ARMOURER[/underlined]
He is Death’s mercenary. Impersonal
The hands which sow the dragon’s teeth;
It is his work, with cable, winch and fuse
To hoist them one by one, each snug in place;
He is their brain, ordains each deadly flight,
Their blast and fire, the screaming shrapnel crust,
And sweats all day, out on the aerodrome.
He’ll not be there when Hell’s abroad tonight,
He will not ponder on the fugues of death
Nor see the place his murderous charges fall;
But once he’s done, across his leathered face
He’ll draw a veiny arm, and spit into the dust.
Back in his hut, he’ll smoke, and hear the News,
And sprawl across his bed with dreams of home.

[underlined]THIS IS OUR NIGHT[/underlined]
This is our night, this hour was blest for us,
Cherished in Hope, nurtured and tended
By two hearts’ Love when Hope seems gone;
All loneliness dies now. Pain is ended
O Love! This peace so well deserved,
This, our one Heaven, is here, is won!
And weary hearts, so long desirous
Each for this joy, again are light.
Such Love will be from Death preserved:
This, our hearts’ hour. This is our night.

[underlined]AIR RAID[/underlined]
From the harsh tides of paralysing sound
Swift sparks of resurrected pain appear
In choking fires of imagination’s twist,
Stirring torn heartbeats, quickened and profound
Which blind my brain into a sickening mist
And the ecstatic sunrises of fear.

[underlined]FOR C.R.W.[/underlined]
Killed March 7th, 1944
[underlined]Aged 21[/underlined]
Death, the last drawbridge, was lowered,
Spanning the moat of his mind,
Guiding his feet as he faltered,
Flung from the claws of the wind.
Pain, the portcullis, was lifted
From the last cell of his brain,
After an instant of anguished
Receding, triumphant in vain.
Regal, he crossed the still threshold,
Severed from war’s dull alarm,
Smiles as he strode with the sunlight
Into the high courts of calm.
