My Dear Mummy and Daddy
I hope that you are both well and are not working too hard – talking about work, you’ve know idea, we have simply masses and hardly any time so please don’t think that its [sic] laziness if I only write to you once a week. all the evening is taken up doing prep; Except for the amount we get it is not too bad.
[underlined] It was lovely having you over on Sunday Daddy and I was terribly pleased to see you again [/underlined]
Since then nothing special has happened – just lessons -!
I have played hockey every day this week and enjoyed it very much – Di is vice hockey captain for our house and she is also in the first eleven for school (it is
[Page break]
her star game)
By the way I’ve got a chance of getting into the house hockey team if I play hard. I do hope I will – and I want to try for the Badminton as well
Tomorrow afternoon we will be going into Matlock to do some shopping - and after tea there is a Quiz – between the houses.
Six people out of each house are going to have questions pattered at them –
Sir has got to answer questions on sport and I have got to answer the Literature ones –
By the way, Mummy, could you go down to the Smiths on Hale Station and ask if they managed to get hold of the “Green Dolphin Country by Elizabeth Gauge [sic] for me
I have settled down now and am enjoying this term very much.
I was a bit muddled at the [missing word] beging [/missing word] of the week about arranging my preps
[page break]
And all the lessons seemed so hard to do but I’ve got fairly straight now I am O.K. again.
Please give my love to Margaret when you see her, and keep lots for both of you
I remain, always your affectionate

My dear Rosemary.
Sunday once more and at last it looks as tho’ the thaw has begun.
It is much warmer here today & there has been a considerable thaw which we all hope will continue although the Radio says that a blizzard is raging in Yorkshire.
Still I’m hopeful that the worst of the cold is past & that we shall soon get some mild weather to cheer us all.
I’v [sic] been wondering during the week what the conditions were
[page break]
[underlined] 2 [/underlined]
like at Darley Dale, from what I’v [sic] read & been told the snow in Derbyshire is as bad as ever, so I can imagine that you will be thoroughly tired of it by now.
As you know Grandma Gomersall is staying with us & I’m glad to say that we are all well.
I do hope my dear that you are quite well & happy.
How are lessons & prep. going along? I trust that you do not find them too hard work my dear & that you are do [sic] well & feeling satisfied with your progress.
[page break]
[underlined] 3. [/underlined]
By the way, did you manage to go to the concert on Friday? I expect that the heavy snowfall would prevent it.
Mummy is sending you a parcel of apples & oranges, she will send you some jam & sweets during the week, when she has got these and we hope that you will enjoy them dear.
We were glad to hear that you had finished your mits and that they were so admired, its quite amusing to have started a fashion eh! & I hope that your friends at school will enjoy making themselves pairs but they will have to hurry or they will be too late to use them this winter.
[page break]
[underlined] 4 [/underlined]
Mummy & I went to see the film “Virginen” [sic] last night, it is in Technicolour & quite pleasant but not very thrilling.
There is a sweet little girl in it about four years old who was very good.
Auntie Ruth at Coniston Cold has got another baby boy so now she & Uncle Edward have [deleted] [indecipherable letter] [/deleted] three boys and Grandma Gomersall has ten grandsons and four granddaughters.
Well my dear daughter that is all the news for the present so I will close this letter with lots of love from us all to you.
Goodnight & God bless you my dear.
Your ever loving,
Daddy.

[inserted] Long Eaton Advertiser [underlined] 10/11/77 [/underlined] [/inserted] 13
Visitors from famous Dambusters’ squadron
A Long Eaton man will be among a group of wartime fliers from 617 Squadron – The Dambusters – who are due to visit Matlock on Saturday, the 33rd anniversary of their successful attack on the German battleship Tirpitz which eliminated a major threat to the Russian convoys.
He is Mr. Ernie Twells D.F.C., of 2 Abbot Street, Long Eaton, who was a flight engineer with 617 Squadron and took part in all three strikes against the Tirpitz.
Members of the 617 Squadron Association are visiting the county at the invitation of Coun. Norman Wilson, chairman of he [sic] county council and himself a former R.A.F. jet fighter pilot.
LEGENDARY
Said Coun. Wilson: “I am delighted that the association was able to accept my invitation. It is appropriate that links should be forged between us because the squadron used the Derwent Dams during training for the legendary raid on the Rhur dams and of course Rolls-Royce engines powered their Lancasters.
There are already links between the present 617 Squadron and our social services department. Groups of problem youngsters have visited the squadron at R.A.F. Scampton in Lincolnshire. The visits have been beneficial and a regular programme has been arranged.”
Membership of the 617 Squadron Association is confined to aircrew who flew operationally with the squadron between its foundation in early 1943 and the end of the war in May 1945. There are 260 members scattered across the world.
The squadron wrote itself into aviation history on the night of May 16, 1943 with the Dambusters raid, using the bouncing bomb invented by Barnes Wallis who spent part of his early life at Ripley.
The Tirpitz operation began 14 months later, again using a Barnes Wallis bomb – the 12,000 lb Tallboy.
The 43,000 ton battleship, sister to the Bismarck, was lying in a Norwegian fiord from where it threatened the Russian convoys. This meant that British battleships had always to be hovering in the background in case the Tirpitz came out. not for nothing was she nicknamed the “Big Bad Wolf” by escort commanders.
The Royal Navy attacked with midget submarines and although two huge mines were exploded under the Tirpitz she did not sink.
SMOKE SCREEN
Then on September 15 617 Squadron staged their first raid. First they flew to Russia to get within range of their quarry in Alten Fiord. But the attack was thwarted by a smoke screen that hid the battleship within minutes.
The squadron returned to England but when the Tirpitz moved south to Tromso a second attack was mounted. Extra fuel tanks and more powerful engines were fitted to the Lancaster bombers but this time cloud hampered the bombing.
It was to be third time lucky on November 12. With German fighters from a nearby station failing to intervene, no cloud and no smoke, 617 Squadron made a perfect attack. Three Tallboys smashed into the Tirpitz and she rolled over and out of the war.
Leading the 20 members of the association will be Group Capt. J.B. Tait, who led all three raids on the Tirpitz. Wtih [sic] him will be seven members of the attacking aircrews together with survivors from the Dambusters’ raid.
After a reception and buffet lunch at County Offices, the party will visit Chatsworth House at the invitation of the Duke of Devonshire.

DAMBUSTERS HONOURED
MEMBERS of the 617 Squadron Association – the Dambusters – have had many honours conferred on them over the years, but Saturday as [sic] the first time they had been honoured by an English county when they visited Matlock.
The occasion was the 33rd anniversary of the squadron’s successful attack of the German prize battleship Tirpitz which eliminated a major threat to Russian convoys.
Twenty members of the association and 70 other guests went to the county offices at the invitation of County Council chairman, Councillor Norman Wilson, himself a former jet fighter pilot.
He presented Group Captain Willy Tait, the officer who commanded 617 Squadron and led the three attacks on the Tirpitz, with a solid silver salver, and Mr Tait handed over the 617 Squadron crest and a photograph of a painting of the Tirpitz raid.
Among the guests were Sir Denning Pearson, former Rolls - Royce chairman and in charge of the technical department during the 1939 – 45 war, Mr Eric Dyer, East Midlands Airport director and president of the Derby branch of the RAF Association, and Derbyshire’s Chief Constable, Mr Walter Stansfield.
Among the local members of the association were Mr Ernie Twells (68), of Abbott Street, Long Eaton, and his wife, Doris. Mr Twells took part in all three raids as a flight engineer.
The party had lunch at Matlock before taking up an invitation by the Duke of Devonshire to visit Chatsworth Park.
From left: Group Captain Tait, Mrs Twells, Mr Twells, Councillor Wilson and Mrs Wilson.
