COURSE 50.
10. A.O.S.
CHATHAM.
NEW BRUNSWICK.
CANADA.
JUNE. 6TH/42.
Dear Mum & all.
Hello again everybody how's things at 55, Kyffin Ave. I hope you're all keeping well & smiling.
I'm quite alright, plenty to eat, and feeling fine. The course gets harder every week, but so far we're keeping up with it by dint of hard work & extra study.
The flying part gets more interesting every time we go up, and we're getting to know the country around here off by heart.
I'll start on your letters now, one was written on April 24th & the other on May 12th, they came two days ago. I'm glad you
[page break]
2/
received the photos alright, Vera got hers too she says. The "Beating Retreat" at Albany was a little too small for identification purposes and I can't quite remember what positions we were in, but I'm somewhere near the back if that's any help.
I passed Glady's message on to Jack. I have had one passed on to me from you so we're square. I received Glady's letter last week & as yet have not replied to it, but I'm going to send it home so you can forward it to her for me.
She certainly does write an interesting letter, I really enjoyed it.
By the way mum, the News Letter from the Church says that Ronnie is on his way overseas, have you any "gen" on it all? If he's coming over here. I may
[page break]
3/
be able to see him.
The Daffodils seem to have done fairly well this year dad & at the price, I'd say they were worth growing. Sorry the wallflowers havn't done so well dad, maybe they'll come on again & pick up.
You might tell Ron that if he's serious about the farm-life, I'll go in with him, provided he comes & farms over here, as I know one or two farmers here & could get a good place if necessary. The country around here is really beautiful & I'd love to take a horse & go riding round. The forests here are tremendous and one could easily get lost in them. The main industries here are
[page break]
4/
farming, fishing & lumbering, so you can guess what the people are like. The rivers are full of drifting woods going down to the saw-mills & pulp mills, and all along the banks are stacks of newly cut spruce-wood. The smell of the resin & new wood is grand, and the sound of the saws & axes is like music on a calm day.
Leslie could probably do better over here as a joiner, as most of the houses are made of wood throughout, & of such varied design to give an English architect pink spots in front of his eyes.
I don't think I'd fancy his first job, although as he says things are bound to be different.
I'd like to slip over and do a bit of digging for you in the allotment & garden dad, it's
[page break]
5/
a long time since I [deleted word] did any work of that sort. David seems to be getting quite handy & he's still [deleted word] as cheeky as ever.
I'm glad to hear Grandma & Grandad & Aunts & Uncles are well. I haven't written to anybody except Grandma, Aunt René & Aunt Gladys so I suppose I'll cop it when I come home again.
Hope Jerry hasn't bothered you of late, I heard about Bradford, York, Sunderland etc., he seems to be getting busy again.
The shooting seems to be pretty good dad, hope you do better next time you go, I certainly wouldn't like to be the bloke you were shooting at.
Mum seems at last to have
[page break]
6/
decided to take a little rest for herself, keep it up mum.
Now for your last letter dated May 12th. Sorry you havn't had many letters for April, you may have got them by now.
I'm sorry to say Vera's letter is quite correct dad. I was eliminated for dangerous & reckless flying alright, it seems strange to me too, I can hardly understand [inserted] it [/inserted] myself, but there it is.
The check-pilot also said my flying was mechanical and said I'd make a good bomber-pilot. Mechanical flying as I understand, is knowing what the plane is going to do, and correcting for it before it actually happens, which is what is needed for bombers. Anyway, I'm out now, but there is one consolation and that is I know I can fly a
[page break]
7/
bomber, because I've flown the Ansons we use here, & we often take-over to give the pilot a rest and a smoke. A navigator's job is more interesting I think & I'll try and get through this first, before I decide to have a second shot at a pilot. Hope you weren't too disappointed dad, I had a bad time for a few days myself but I've got [inserted] over [/inserted] that now. Jack Kellett was eliminated the same way, as were nearly half the course at Arcadia. So far thirteen of our chums have been killed at Basic Flying School, so maybe it's as well we were eliminated. Even though we are not on service flying we've had some narrow escapes here and so far we've lost
[page break]
8
four lads in a month.
All the lads here are getting tired of the war & being so far away from home for so long doesn't help any.
Muriel & Jack Burden don't seem to be having such a good time these days, hope Muriel goes on alright, she's a grand kid, remember me to her mum.
I'm glad to hear Vera is looking better; she seems to enjoy her job a lot better than Stanleys, and her letters are always cheery. When she refers to you, she says it's her second home & your'e her other mum & dad, Bless her she's grand.
Mum I hope the Tomatoes do as well in the window as the geraniums did, then you'll be justified in putting the geraniums outside. I saw a window in Chatham the other night and it was full of geraniums just
[page break]
9/
like ours. I told the lady too, & we [inserted] had [/inserted] quite a discussion on different plants & things. Oh yes dad, I'm well in, perhaps I should tell you why. You see George and I and several of the boys in our class have joined a [deleted letters] choir at the United Church here & this lady happens to be the soloist soprano. The choir consists of about thirty women & young ladies, and about twelve airmen and eight civilians, so you can guess what it sounds like. A fortnight ago the twelve of us (the airmen I mean) sang a hymn unaccompanied & it must have sounded good because it's been the talk of the town since. However since then we've sung (the whole choir) Handel's Largo; Sibelius Finlandia,
[page break]
10/
Gloria in Excelsis, Gounos' Ave Maria, Jesu Joy of Man's Desiring & others that I can't just remember at the moment.
We really do enjoy the singing, and we'll be sorry when we have to leave here. The schedule has been changed again and at the end of this month we're leaving for the Prairies, Davidson, Saskatchewan is our next stop as far as we know.
I'm sorry I'm not able to send you the snaps of Niagara yet, but as soon as George shakes himself & sends the negatives for reprint, I'll be able to send them. Well dad I'll have to close as it's time for school. Love to all, Keep Smiling.
Cheerio for now.
Your Loving Son.
Ken.

Dear Mum, dad, & all,
Is life treating you well, and are you all free from colds etc? I hope so, because I'm doing fine and keeping well. Dad, I'll bet I can give you at least a stone, don't tell Vera but the scales went round to 13 stones the other day. Don't worry mum my waistline isn't any bigger; up to press; and at least I'm too heavy for a "tail-end Charlie" or Air Gunner.
I know I promised you an account of Niagara Falls before but I held on a little to try and get some snaps done to send with it, but the service here isn't good so I'll have

bordered by a broad stretch of grass, with a line of trees and shrubs down the centre. The whole highway for 87 miles is lighted & at night presents a wonderful sight. Now I'll carry on.
We stood at the side of the road for three minutes and then a gentleman pulled up for us & asked us our destination. We told him we aimed at Niagara Falls and he said, "Why that's fine; I'm going within 25 miles of there," so in we hopped and had a very pleasant drive for 60 miles. At St. Catherines our Good Samaritan bade us farewell, and again we took up our stance. A car came along practically immediately and we drove with this gentleman right to Niagara & pulled up on the road overlooking the Niagara Falls.
[page break]
4/
The whole journey of nearly a hundred miles took less than three hours, and our whole waiting time was less than ten minutes. George and I went down the steep winding road to a point directly opposite the American Falls on the Canadian sight. From one view-point we could see the water from both falls coming over the brink & crashing down onto the rocks beneath. The spray rose to over a hundred feet & though we were over half-a-mile away from the Fall itself we felt the spray. After taking a few snaps we sought a drier vantage point & climbed back up the road to the power house. From here we watched the rainbows made by rays of the sun on the spray, as they rose and fell with the increase and decrease in amount of spray coming up from the
[page break]
5/
foot of the falls.
We spent nearly an hour and a half drinking in the [deleted word] beauty of the Falls, until finally the craving of our tummies for nourishment, overcame our curiosity and amazement. Turning back, we climbed up the road and stood for a minute or two watching both falls. A voice from a car hailed us, and a gentleman asked us if we had made arrangements to stay the night. We narrated our experiences, and he drove us to the Y.M.C.A. where we were made very welcome, given a cup of tea & told to wait a minute & they would find us a room for the night.
The lady came back and told us she had arranged for us to stay with a Mrs. Arkell & gave us directions to
[page break]
6/
reach the house. The street car took us to the end of the road, and from there we walked down the road to the house we were looking for.
We introduced ourselves to Mrs. Arkell; an elderly lady, but with a twinkle in her eye & a jovial smiling face; and were shown our room.
We washed & spruced ourselves up in general and descended the stairs into the drawing room. Mrs. Arkell was waiting for us with a tea-wagon on which were toast, marmalade, tea, scones, biscuits, cookies & cakes. During our snack we made ourselves more acquainted and had quite an interesting conversation.
After clearing away the pots etc. Mrs. Arkell took us out to the car and we drove round Niagara for nearly two hours. We visited the Burning Well and the Observation Tower, and viewed the Falls again from
[page break]
7/
all angles. The Burning Well I have mentioned is supposed to be unique although I wouldn't like to vouch for it's authenticity. The well is fed by a spring, and the water contains some kind of chemical compound which makes it inflammable. It was discovered by some Indian or other many moons ago, or so they say and is the only one of it's kind in existence. However, the observation tower afforded a better view of the falls & was therefore more interesting. From our position we could see both falls at once, and through magnifying glasses we picked out the points were [sic] the barrel attempts were made, the smugglers' scow [?] on the upper rapids, and the Rock of Ages. After a while we climbed down the steep
[page break]
8/
road, and boarded the little steamer, "Maid of the Mist". The crew[?] gave us oilskin clothing, which we were thankful for later on, and we were taken right up against the foot of the American Falls, along the bottom of the falls, out past the base of the island and up to the Horseshoe Falls. The spray was terrific & if we hadn't have had oilskins on we would have been soaked. The currents set up by the falls are very strong and it beats me how the little steamer gets up so far, to the Horseshoe Falls especially. I've managed to procure one snap from one of the lads this morning, so it will have to suffice until the others are ready. The view is of the Horseshoe Falls, and you can see what the spray is like. In the middle centre you can see the Power House on the American side, and to the
[page break]
9/
left is the old smugglers' scow, the point where the barrel attempts were made are just left of the thin line fall in the middle left of the snap. The route taken by the "Maid of the Mist" is about what I've marked on the snap. You'll be able to see better when I get the other snaps done.
At 6.0 p.m. Mrs. Arkell took us back home and introduced us to Mr. Arkell & to her daughter and friend. Dinner followed at 6.30 p.m., consisting of chicken, potatoes, spinach, peas & thick gravy, we finished off with rhubarb pie, (made especially for us) and coffee.
After dinner we retired to the drawing room for a smoke and a chat. The ladies having previous engagements, left to keep them, and Mr Arkell, George and I went round to his friends house and had a very
[page break]
10/
enjoyable evening playing "Pool", the American idea of our "Snooker."
On leaving at 11-p.m. our host asked us, George & I, to stay all the following day & night, and his daughter would drive us back to Toronto in his car, but having promised George's cousin to be back the next day, we had to offer our thanks and withdraw as gracefully as we could. Mr. Arkell took us home in his car & after a cup of coffee we retired to bed, tired but quite happy. The next morning we were awakened by Mrs. Arkell at 10 a.m. and having bathed & dressed we partook of a hearty breakfast of porridge, ham & eggs, marmalade & toast. We left the house and went for a last look at the falls, then returned and packed our bags. After a light lunch we bade our hostess
[page break]
11/
farewell and took ourselves off to pay our respects and dues to Mr. Arkell, whom we located at his bank, (sorry I forgot to say, he's a bank manager), and after chatting for a few minutes, we thanked him for his kindness and generosity, and set our backs to the Falls and started off in the direction of Toronto.
We decided to go back by the inland route (we took the lakeshore route down), for the change, & were soon speeding along with an English lady & her husband. They told us that they had just seen their boy off, to his unit, as he had just been called up, so we assured them as to his future welfare by quoting instances of our own life in the service. We drove with these people to St. Catherines, and during
[page break]
12/
that time, they pointed out the various landmarks and general aspects of the country, which was very interesting. At St. Catherines we obtained a lift from a commercial traveller, and as usual he had a funny story or two to tell. As we left St. Catherines we started running into the fruit belt and the blossoms were out in bloom. The scent was wonderful, and the many colours presented a marvelous [sic] sight. On each side of the road for miles were the plantations of vines, apples, pears, plums, apricots, & peaches, and the scent made it seem like passing through a perfumery department. The road wound up and round the hills, through woods & across valleys, and still there we were acres of fruitland. At Hamilton we left our traveller, and were picked up by
[page break]
13/
two gentlemen in a large saloon car. We told them our destination, and were agreeably surprised to find that they were driving past the end of the street on which George's cousin lived. Settling back in our seats we again watched the fruitlands go flashing by. I can't really give you an accurate description of our journey through the fruit-belt, it's one of those things that have to be [deleted] believes [/deleted] seen to be really appreciated.
We joined the Queen Elizabeth highway again and drove along by the side of the lake to Toronto. We reached the apartment at 5.0 p.m. after a thrilling experience, which cost us nothing except 25c tram-fare, and afforded us nearly two days of luxurious travel and enjoyment, we raised our hats to
[page break]
14/
the kind people who had made it possible, and only wished we had the means to repay the compliment.
Mrs. Cameron, George's cousin's mother-in-law, made us a delicious tea & bade us keep silent until Edna & Harold came home for dinner. Over our coffee & cigarettes, (I smoked my pipe) we related our adventure and were acclaimed heroes of the day, on the strength of which we all went to the show and had a very enjoyable evening. The rest of our stay at Toronto was a mass of theatres, dinners, pictures and visits to friends, all of which we enjoyed immensely. Friday [deleted] night [/deleted] morning came around too soon and we had to leave our friends in Toronto and board the train for Chatham.
The journey down took until 3-0 p.m. Saturday from 9-0 a.m. Friday so you [inserted] can [/inserted] guess we were pretty tired when
[page break]
15/
we arrived here, although we didn't actually report until 10 p.m. We had a good look round & our first thoughts of surviving at Chatham for 18 weeks were pretty grim, or I should say 14 weeks as we thought then. However now we’ve been here eight weeks, we have other opinions and we'll be sorry to leave.
Well folks, if you're not bored, I'll write a little more.
By now Ron should have landed wherever he is, and there might be a chance of his coming here after all, as quite a few of our lads were issued with tropical kit to come here, and all the lads here wear summer uniforms of khaki. Anyway we'll keep on hoping. I'll write to him tomorrow if I have the
[page break]
16/
time.
Well mum I'll have to close as it's getting near time to go flying. Tonight we set off at 10 p.m. and should be back around 1 a.m., so don't worry about me. You know I'm getting quite good, even though I say it myself, and I find my job is very interesting. I'll be able to give you lots of laughs when I do get home, about our early navigation, it's really funny when you come down but not so funny upstairs.
That's all this time, the kites are revving up & navigators being called for.
Give my love to all, & remember me to friends. Keep well & smiling.
Yours till the prop. flies off,
Your loving Son.

Dear mum & all,
Hello dears, not long to go now, by the time this reaches you I should have finished here & be coming home.
We finished all our exams yesterday & are hoping they’re O.K.
It would just about break our hearts to fail now, after so many weeks of hard work.
Our wings – parade is to be held next Friday week, & I’ll be thinking of you all, hoping you’ll all be proud of me.
I received a letter from you
[page break]
2/
today dad dated Aug. 25th/42 so it didn’t take long to get here.
It seems queer that you havn’t [sic] received as many letters as Vee.
I made a point of either writing you both together, or alternately so you should have about the same. Thanks for the snaps dad, theyr’e real good. The nipper seems to get more like Ronnie every-day. I’m sorry to say I don’t think I’ll be able to bring him any banana’s, as the only ones there are in Canada are flown here every two days from New York to a little girl who is seriously ill. I’ll have a try though so tell him to keep on hoping. The other day I bought him a heavy lumber-jacket with a zipp [sic] down the front, so I’m hoping it will fit him. I could
[page break]

do with a kit-bag or two just to bring home the things I’d like to bring. So far I’ve collected, soap, towels, razor blades, stockings, socks, cosmetics, pull-overs, hair-pins, material for mum’s dress, silk scarves, and other trinkets etc. If theres’ anything special let me know, I’ve still got some money left. The big trouble is the bulk, as wer’e only allowed two kitbags & my own service kit is terrific.
I’m glad to hear the lad is doing fine out East, sometimes I wish I’d have joined up with him, however Canada is a good place. Glad to hear the tomato experiment turned out good mum, they should taste good. You

mum, Canada is spoiling us for coming home, although sugar and tea are rationed more here than they were at home when I left.
There is also some talk of wholesale rationing like there is at home, and I see this week soap, lard and cooking fats are to be rationed.
Seems dad we all have been reverting a little to the country life again lately. Only last week
I was out at a farm across the river from here and milked five cows, cleaned out over half a ton of muck from the [indecipherable word], separated the milk & churned the butter. I had a really enjoyable evening & am looking forward to going again. Last weekend we had a 48hr. pass & George & I went with Byron, Margarets’ brother (I’ve mentioned the Lobban’s before) to
[page break]

a logging camp up in the woods. We had a marvellous time & secured a pretty good story of the camp in pictures, which have not as yet been developed.
We travelled by lorry over miles of unpaved road and drove through a tunnel of pine trees to the camp.
The smell of the woods out here is grand, I wish you could have been with me. We rounded a corner and came upon the camp, the saw-mill was set up on the bank of the river and two teams of big horses were hauling up the logs from the log boom in the river to the saw-table; here the logs are clamped down and run against the circular saws which
[page break]
6/
trim the logs to shape. The logs are then transformed into beams, and are then put through another pair of saws which cut them to width. From this saw they are lifted up onto the tellers’ table who marks the logs in length & width & as they slide off the tellers’ table a man cuts them to proper length and other men carry them away to the respective piles or straight onto the lorries. While this is going on the piles of sawdust are continually growing & two men are kept busy moving it away from the saws & piling it elsewhere.
Another two men with horses are kept busy moving away the strips from the logs while others are piling the strip-wood to be taken away & used for stove & furnace fuel.
The whole camp worked like a
[page break]
7/
smooth, effortless, well-oiled piece of machinery, the men’s backs & arms moving in rhythm with the song of the saws. The spirit of friendliness in these camps is symbolic of the people of Canada, they work, sing, and play together as one large family. At 2.0pm. the mill stopped for dinner & the men insisted that we join them for dinner. We did, and how those men worked after such a meal beats me, all we wanted to do was lie down and sleep, but one curiosity kept us awake. We tried our hand at most of the jobs going, but the one job I liked was the foremans’; he’s the teller, & marks the logs as they come up from the saw-tables. Its’ a
[page break]
8/
very interesting job & requires a good knowledge of each kind of wood, sizes & lengths, as there isn’t time to measure anything & the different types of wood come through together. The time for us to leave came all too soon, and we rode back to Chatham in the lorries with about 6 tons’ of wood on each. When we reached the wood-yard we helped to unload and stack, & then Byron took us home, where we had a nice tea and a sleep. The mill has been moved this week & as soon as it is set up again we are hoping to visit it again. The men who work in these lumber camps are all huge men, with shoulders like doors, & arms like the logs they work on, one man was over 65 years old, and to see him carry three or four 16 foot beams at once, you’d think he
[page break]
9/
was in the prime of manhood.
I’m sorry I haven’t been able to give you a better description, but I can promise a better one [deleted] which [/deleted] when the photo’s are at hand.
I think I’ve about run out of things to say just now, and I really must do some work this afternoon. We fly again tonight, so I had to pinch some time to write this.
Tell Ronnie to look after himself, I hope he goes on swimmingly, I’ve been in the river a few times myself, but I have a hard job persuading my other foot to leave the safety of the bottom & perish with the rest of me.
Tell Leslie to keep on the good work & remember me to the lads

at Templenewsam when he goes. David, are you still looking after Vera for me? hope so; keep the rabbits fed David, I haven’t tasted one since I left England, “or arn’t [sic] they for eating?” O.K. nipper I won’t eat your pets, keep your chin up, maybe you’ll be able to fight me soon. That’s all this time folks, give my love to Uncs & Aunts, Grandma & Grandad & remember me to everybody, not forgetting Eric Mitchell & Pip.
Cheerio, Chins up.
Your Loving Son

RAF. STATION.
BARDNEY
SEPT. 4TH/43
Dear mum, dad, & David.
Sorry I couldn't write before. I've been very busy changing quarters, and then we were over Berlin last night. The officers Mess here is very nice, everybody tried to help, and there's no air of officialdom round the place either. We flew over the outskirts of Templenewsam this morning on our way home, but I couldn't see anything or anybody I knew. Tom says he [underlined] will [/underlined] come to Leeds this next leave and says he'll act as groomsman for me, “I think he likes riding round in cars”, so do you think he could come up on Friday night, as the trains are bad from Barnsley or Darton on a Saturday? I'll write again as soon as I can, so cheerio for now. Lots of love Ken. xxxx David xxxx

Nr. NEWARK.
NOTTS.
Aug. 26th./44.
Dear mum & dad,
Just a few lines to let you know I'm getting along alright. The weather down here isn't too good lately, plenty of rain, low cloud and morning fogs are the usual run of things, so it looks like we've had our summer for this year.
I'm hoping we'll have a few days fine weather for my leave though, because I'd like to take Vera and Derek to Scarborough for a few days, it will be a change for them at least. I'm on holiday all the time or so they tell me.
[page break]
2/
Here's a puzzler for you dad, two ladders one 30 feet long, the other 20 ft. long are leaning against the walls of a well, they cross 10 ft. about [sic] the ground so what is the width of the well.
[diagram]
We've been trying to work it out for several days now, but I can't remember sufficient "calculus" to do it though it can be done by straight mathematics.
Well I'lll [sic] have to close as the lads want some "gen", so keep well and look after yourselves.
Cheerio for now,
Your Loving Son

Dear Mum & Dad,
Just a few lines to let you know I've arrived safely at my new station.
As I said before it's a large hotel where we live and the quarters are quite comfortable; the food is quite good and there seems to be plenty of entertainment.
We have transport to take us to work and back every day so we shouldn't do too badly.
I expect we'll have quite a bit of flying to do before we do any "ops" so I don't see us

being very idle this next week. As Germany is about the only place left now I expect we'll see quite a lot of it again but I'm not particularly worried about that.
Well I can't think of any more to say now so I'll close and write again as soon as I can.
Keep well and smiling I'll be alright here so don't worry.
Goodnight & God Bless,
Your Loving Son,

Feb. 2nd/45.
Dear mum & dad,
Here's just a few lines for now in answer to your letter.
Glad you've heard from Ron & Les I'll bet their meeting will last for a long time in the letters it certainly will have made things brighter for our Ron, I'll be home to see the photo's the beginning of March.
I see in the paper the "Ities" did less work than we did, 200 of them moved less snow in two hours than four British workmen did.
I suppose David will be fed up now the snow has gone, unless his puppy claims all his attention.
Vera and Derek are still O.K. she says the snow put her off, the pram would have been too heavy.
Well that's all I can get on here so I'll say Goodnight & God Bless;
Your Loving Son Ken [kisses] David [kisses]

Dear mum & dad,
Hello all here's just a few lines to let you know I arrived back safely. My flight Commander had made things right for me so nobody is any wiser except that I'm a trip behind the rest of the crew but that doesn't matter much at all.
I was certainly lucky to see you dad we very nearly caught the bus down to town; hope you got home O.K. with the coke.
Well that's all I have for now so I'll close & write again soon.
Goodnight & God Bless.

OFFICERS MESS.
R.A.F. SYERSTON.
Nr. NEWARK.
NOTTS.
MAR. 5TH./44.
Dear all,
Thanks for your letter of the 1st, sorry I've not written lately I'll not make excuses I've so many letters to answer it puts me off every time I try to start.
The old squadron isn't the same now, but I'm not thinking of going back there for a long time yet, if I do go back at all, don't worry about that. I'll go when they send me but no sooner.
Glad to hear of Jack's baby, he'd be proud alright if he knew, has she had any definite news yet of him?
Where did mum go for your pants dad? not Austin Reids did she? my shirts were less than 25/- when I got them there. Still their stuff is good wearing so maybe it's
[page break]
2/
worth the extra.
Glad you've heard from Ron, but sorry he's got Rheumatics in his shoulder; I keep having a twinge in mine now and then but mine's not Rheumatics.
Hope Les does get home, I'm trying to get next weekend off but I don't know if I'll be able to for sure yet.
Sorry you got the taxi bill instead of Vera, I told them to send it to Sycamore Ave. but they must have got mixed up with the addresses. I don't quite get the bit about Auntie Reno knowing it was coming and you didn't, who told her anyway; and it's quite usual for people to send bills or they wouldn't get paid.
Glad Ron's cable got here more or less on time, he's getting good at timing them isn't he?
Hope the snow's gone now; I used to
[page break]
3/
enjoy it when I was at school but I don't now, it causes too much work. We got nearly a foot of it and we've not finished clearing it yet; I discovered a complete set of new muscles when I'd shovelled for a couple of hours, but I've worked them in now, tomorrow should see that last of shovels and picks I hope, although the airfield is still white over except for the runways.
Remember me to Pip when you write dad and thank her for her best wishes, I'll drop her a line when I can, and Mrs. Fillingham too.
The coupons are alright dad, glad you could use them; would you send the book back they have a bad habit of checking up every now and then and if we havn't the books we're for it, they're getting pretty keen now on coupons.
[page break]
4/
You wouldn't think Uncle John was 43 he doesn't look or act it usually does he?
It sure is funny how news gets around, I'll bet you were suprised [sic] on the phone when he said that.
I'll work out my flying miles tomorrow, my log-book is up in the office right now. I think Ron has more miles by land and sea than I have by quite a good margin. I did a 3,000 mile trip to Halifax then over 2,000 to Georgia by rail, did at least a 1000 miles by car in Florida. after 500 miles by train to get there, then 1500 miles to Trenton, over 1000 miles by train in trips to Toronto and 200 by car to Niagara and back, then 1200 miles to Chatham, from there 300 miles to Halifax and 2,500 miles back to Liverpool by boat, in trips up and down England from Bournemouth to Leeds to Bournemouth to Luffenham to Swinderby.
[page break]
6/
to Bardney and now Syerston puts another 1000 miles by rail making 14,200 miles by my reckoning which isn't bad considering the cost of travel these days. At a guess I'd say I'd done around 75,000 miles by air, three times round the world very near.
Well time draws on, it's my bed-time so I'll close for now.
Look after yourselves and keep well, tell David to be a good lad.
Goodnight and God Bless.
Your Loving Son.

SEPT. 4TH./44.
Dear mum & dad,
Just a few lines to let you know I'm still alive and kicking.
This last fortnight I've been writing to various places at Scarborough to try a [sic] book for my next leave. Most places were full up and others won't have young children so I've finally booked a bungalow at Knaresboro' down by the river side, for a week 9th. to 16th. I shan't be there until the 11th. owing to my leave dates but it's worth it to give Vera a change for a few days. I did
[page break]

suggest that Vera and her mum should go on the Saturday but I don't know yet whether they will or not.
I'm going straight out there on the Monday so I won't have time to see you before I go; still we'll be down when we get back I'm trying to get nine days this time too.
Well dad several of the places you used to talk about like Bapaume, Arras, Ypres & Mons have come up again this last week; thank goodness there hasn't been the slaughter this time that there was then; we do seem to be pushing him around now don't we; I can't see him lasting much longer now can you?
[P.T.O].

Well and how is mum these days hope you're keeping well and looking after yourself.
Were you out at the Shaftesbury when Vera called on Wednesday? it rained too hard for her to come down again this last weekend.
I'll have to close now, so keep your chins up and keep smiling.
Your Loving Son.

Dear mum and dad,
Just a few lines in answer to your letter of the 28th/44.
Hope you're back at work alright dad and your leg is much better.
There's been no damp down here at all since we arrived, the weather has been really grand, though it looks like we might get a drop of rain before morning.
The crew are coming along fine though we're a mixed crowd alright. The pilot F/L. Gumbley comes from New Zealand, the engineer and wireless operation hail from London, the bombaimer from Derby and the gunners from Hull
[page break]
2/
and Preston so you see we're quite a cosmopolitan crew. Unfortunately none of my old crew are with me but we'll manage alright I reckon.
I'm glad to hear Ron has received his shirt alright, it's a bit of a do when they can't get stores out there we've held Italy long enough now.
I don't know really what to think of the war except that it's a nuisance, Jerry seems to be patching up his armies again and it may last ages yet or maybe it's his last stand we don't know.
All I'm bothered about is getting my tour done quickly and then
[page break]
3/
taking things easy while some of the others have a go.
Well hello again it's Thursday now, I didn't have time to finish before. As you say we'll have to watch Derek he's a real treat to watch too, Vera says she had him in the tramcar and he was laughing at everybody, one lady said his smile was like the sun breaking through the clouds I think it is too.
You were talking about Arnhem well I've seen and spoken to several of them, infact some of them were brought back to our 'drome, they were tired alright and a lot were wounded but they weren't licked they'd have gone back there and then if they'd been allowed to and they all knew what they had been sent to do and
[page break]
4/
they did it too. If the weather had been better we could have done more for them but as it is now they did their job and anyone who says Arnhem was a failure should come down here and talk to the lads who were there.
Well I can't think of anymore to say just now except we havn't done anything yet except some "stooge-flying".
That's all for now, keep well and look after yourselves.
Your Loving Son

OCT. 25TH./44.
Dear mum & dad,
Thanks for your letter of the 22nd. it arrived yesterday.
I'm glad to say I'm quite alright again though I did lose a few pounds in weight, however I can that O.K. so maybe some good came of my little complaint.
On Sunday afternoon we went on a seven mile route march because there wasn't anything else to do. The C.O. led the column and he certainly did get along, we went round in under two hours without a break so you can guess we were pretty tired after that.
[page break]
2/
I'm glad to hear Leslie's photograph is a good one, you'll be [underlined] able [/underlined] to see all four of us now with one glance round the room.
I was looking up the Naval "gen" the other day and according to the latest list there hasn't been an H.M.S. "Coquette", since before the Spanish Armada sailed up the channel, so I reckon as you say that Les' ship is a brand new one.
Didn't the picture "Behold I stand etc" used to be hung up over the gas-light between the two [deleted] pictures [/deleted] [inserted] windows [/inserted] in [deleted word] our bedroom in Arthur Street? I've seen it since of course but I seem to remember it best
[page break]
3/
as it hung there; the old tie-frame has come in handy too, a good example of "mend and make do".
Reading about Gladys and the “Glass” reminds me of the book "Road to Endor,” a story of two officers who escaped from a Turkish prison camp by using such a device to fool their captives; it's quite a good story and it's authentic too apart from the glass of course which was a fake it's quite easy to remember the positions of letters in a circle and easier still to answer questions by auto-suggestion, still if people like to believe it it's a good way to pass an evening or two.
[page break]
4/
Glad to hear Grandma & Grandad are still keeping fairly well and Aunt Muriel too, how's Aunt Lil and Uncle John these days have they been over lately? and has Arthur heard any more about the Navy?
I'll have to drop Gladys a line, my correspondence has gone all haywire these last few weeks or so.
Tell David I'm trying to get him some stamps, we've quite a few chaps from Australia & New Zealand here but their mail only arrives about once a month.
I can't think of any more to write just now so I'll close & say Goodnight.
Cheerio, chins up & keep smiling.
Your Loving Son.

Dear Mr & Mrs Riding,
I have been hoping to see you but these [indecipherable word] of leave etc. all fizzle out and it looks as though it will be some time yet so I thought I'd drop you a line to say how sorry I am to hear of your news of Ron. I'm sure nothing anyone can say will relieve your present anxiety – but perhaps it will help a little to know that we sympathise very deeply with you and await further news anxiously. May it not be long before you have better tidings.
[page break]
Stuart wishes to join me in this too.
I hope you are both keeping as well as possible and that it won't be long before I see you again.
With love
Kathleen.

Tuesday
Dear Alex,
Thanks a lot for your letter, I was pleased to see that you had a good time when you were on leave and hope that you have been able to get home again since, or have you been too busy!
It seems ages since I was on leave, it will be about eight weeks since I had leave from OTU., anyhow I could just use some right now but don’t think we shall get it from here as we go right to a Squadron, and we should be going some time this week as we only have one more trip to do here.
Last night was the first night we [inserted] have [/inserted] had free for a week, the rest of the week we have been flying, however we were scrubbed quite a few nights due to weather and
[page break]
our misfortune to strike U.S kites, which besides keeping us on the ground also ruined our night. Friday night was one of these nights, the kite wasn’t fit and we hung about until it was too late to do the exercise which I had been looking forward to as we were going to be diverted on our return, and was annoyed when I found out that they came down at Riccall. I believe they had a wizard night in Leeds.
Mary’s brother, the one in the Eighth Army, is back in this country, and the Saturday before last they had a binge which I was invited to but couldn’t make, at least it turned out that I could have done if I had just hopped it and I certainly wish I had. We were due to fly on the Saturday night but was [deleted] to [/deleted] scrubbed too late for me to catch the
[page break]
train and Sunday was a stinker of a day so again no flying, and therefore I could have made it. This weekend they had another binge and again I had to fly so have been rather cheesed off, however we only have one more night of it here and it might be tonight.
Roland Northedge was married a week last Saturday at a small village near Lincoln, I was invited but again the sorry tale, I couldn’t make it, anyhow I sent them a wedding present and received some of the cake so it must have happened. I was rather surprised when I learnt that he was going to be married as I never knew he was engaged again, but knew that he was going out with a girl. She was a bus conductress, has a twin sister, which I thinked [sic] foxed Bill at first,
[page break]
and is a farmer’s daughter which is all the ‘gen’ I know about her, however I guess I shall meet her some time, perhaps soon. We might be posted to the same ‘drome as Bill, as there is a Rhodesian Squadron there and they are trying to get as many Rhodesians [deleted] there [/deleted] as possible and the AOC. asked Arthur the other day if he would like to go there. Arthur is getting his commission very soon, it appears that all pilots in V Group get their commissions, he also put in a word for me so that after I have been on the Squadron for a short time I shall put in for one.
Well I guess that is all the ‘gen’ for the present so TTFN.
All the Best,
Mervyn
[page break]
30 November 1943
Mervyn is coming to the end of his posting at RAF Winthorpe, near Newark (he left that Friday) and is longing for some leave. The intensity of the workload is apparent in this letter as so much time seems to be spent on standby which is seriously curtailing boozing expeditions. Here he mentions Mary’s brother serving in the eighth army who was home on leave and having a night out. Also, he enviously refer to some fellow aircrew who had made an emergency landing at Riccall and had a wizard night out in Leeds.

Dear Mrs Wilson,
I feel I just had to write you, and express with you my deepest sympathy during this anxious time of waiting of news of our loved ones. I had your lovely letter forwarded on to me, by [indecipherable word] parents , you see I am Gei’s girl friend, and I guess I am feeling this blow pretty badly too. I can well understand
[page break]
just how this is affecting you, as when I heard from Mrs Ferrier in Cananda, she told me you had three small children, and I [indecipherable word] then that God would surely take care of them, and that one day soon, I know your husband, and all the boys will turn up smiling. They must for all our sakes, and the boys had such faith in your husband, that I feel it will only take time for them to be once more back amongst us. I feel if we trust in them, they can’t let us down, and
[page break]
we will keep on praying very hard, and I feel sure our prayers will be answered, so until then keep your chin up, along with all of us.
Yours Sincerely

Dear Dad,
As I probably told you in my last note, I’m now on leave. We’ve been having such beautiful weather I thought I’d get away this time without taking my coat. But lo & behold when leaving on Sunday it was snowing & was bitterly cold.
Couldn’t get a train to York & had to go to Hull & thence to Leeds, where I stayed once more with Mrs Aberaydi.[?] She got a shock at seeing me on my own for we hadn’t been over to her place since Christmas. She and the old boy got very upset & got all the home addresses from me. The old laddie is a helpless invalid from the last war & loves to have someone to
[page break]
natter to.
I had a day in London & it was even snowing down there. Ran into numerous blokes I knew including Doug Johnson, whom I’d not seen since his accident at [indecipherable word]. He got on to Mosquito’s & had bags of Berlin trips. Also Kev Shanahan[?] who was shot down over the Dover about a week before us. They all got out but the engineer & I think [two or three indecipherable words] young Kevin Dennis had a foot ….agged off.
[one indecipherable word] A.I.F. lads taken in Greece & Crete, [two or three indecipherable words] round London awaiting repat. At the moment I’m down in Dorset staying with Wally’s people, in this very quiet little village. I had intended going down to Torquay but the weather isn’t the best & I wouldn’t get any swimming unless I went into a heated pool.
I think most of the rest of the crew went up to Scotland this leave.
[page break]
We celebrated Anzac day last week by getting airborne and doing our first operation as a new crew. It was a pretty easy stage to the Frisians & we got a certain amount of ribbing as “Janoks” when we got back & found we were the only kite on the A squadron who’d been hit by flak. It was just a small bit through the windscreen which made [two indecipherable words] home cold & uncomfortable [two indecipherable words].
It looks as though, thank God, we’ve had it [indecipherable word]. I don’t give a damn actually [indecipherable word] we are left over here on transport, sent to another theatre of war, or returned home on repatriation. I’ve been considering getting stuck into a few exams to take out a civil navigation licence but so far, as usual, I’ve been too tired & lazy.
Incidentally did South African snapshots ever turn up yet. I hope they didn’t go astray. Regards & love to all, Pat.

Dear Eileen,
I guess you should be home from your Sydney spin by the time this arrives. How did it go anyhow? I hope you put your watch back the usual 2 hours on return. On is 4 now days since the completion of “[underlined] our [/underlined] clocks”.
Must first acknowledge receipt of the £20, which I can transfer to my savings bank over here – I'm holding fairly well at the moment having had no decent break for 8-10 weeks.
I've had 2 days in Leeds this week – went to a couple of dances & saw 2 shows. Nothing very exciting. I fact I was very disappointed in “The White Cliffs of Dover” which the London papers gave a good crit. when first released. It got very sloppy in parts.
I think Roger & I must have been the only 2 people in Leeds whom the Quake failed to awake – even the rest of the crew heard & felt it.
[page break]
However I made up for it the prev [sic] week when I heard all the explosions but thank God they were a fair way off.
Must also [underlined] also [/underlined] acknowledge receipt of your photograph. Excuse me for saying you have put on weight but I don’t suppose the camera can be blamed for that – or for the handover?
On the same day I had Christmas greetings from both Aunt Cis & from 64 Chapel St so you might acknowledge them. Tough luck you missed out on a subject. Pleased Doreen got through. And how is the nipper going? His should soon be coming out, should they not?
Heard anything further re your destination for next year. I imagine you are hoping for another high school in preference to going back to the “bush”.
The surrounding fields & potato patches here are covered in a thick coating of ice & the “Joe Erlas” have been skating on it for days. Hence we are still flying very little.
[page break]
However we are gradually waking through it & with a bit of luck should soon be posted. Could go anywhere but the odds are we’ll stay in the same vicinity. The weather wouldn’t be much better but conditions would improve a hundred per cent.
Thanks a lot for your most recent hamper which arrived last week & was most acceptable, particularly the tinned fruit of course. The tinned soups etc aren’t much good to us but you might occasionally send along a tube of Kolynos for I dest [sic] this English wartime toothpaste. The tinned milk was also acceptable although we’ve lately had to do without cocoa as the taps are frozen up. To get water means walking right over to the mess & if you walk [inserted] it [/inserted] there is no necessity to make your own beveridge [sic] as there is usually some up there.
In any case thanks a lot for what you’ve been doing for me. Don’t forget to forward your impressions of Sydney. Did you manage to get yourself a boy friend yet? Thanks for the photo.
Regards & the best for ’45. Love Pat

Dear Eileen,
I feel rather guilty about my failure to keep up correspondence but it hasn't been entirely my fault & I hope you'll maybe see your way clear to forgive me once more. Actually I don't really know when last I wrote you but at least I know I'm a few behind you.
No doubt you've heard from home that I've now been on a squadron for a month or so & like it very much here. The do treat us exceptionally well.
Glad to know you had such a grand leave in Sydney. No I didn't see Sydney. Strangely enough I suppose it is alright for a start but sightseeing bores me these days particularly in this country where they try to sell you the same dilapidated old ruins everywhere you go. I suppose you are again settled
[page break]
down to work again by now. Pardon me for not writing sooner to wish you birthday greetings but it is better late than never so here's all the best. Maybe the cable got there anyway.
As a matter of fact I've just had nine days leave myself. Being very weary indeed – we had done 5 trips in the last week before it – I set off for [indecipherable word] Kemp's farm in Somerset & there had 4 or 5 days of rest, fresh air & good tucker. Thence I had a couple of days in London where I saw a couple of shows & went along to the Hammersmith Palais one night. It is about the largest dance hall in London & you may have heard their bands for they both made quite a few records – Lou Preager & Sydney Simone - & they are both hot stuff.
Rog. & I then started on our way home, [deleted] calling on [/deleted] intending to go on to Leicester Notts or Leeds to finish up. We were passing through Bedford at lunch time so stayed there when we found we could get accommodation at a very nice appointed pub.
[page break]
We got back after 10 1/2 hrs travelling & changing onto numerous trains & buses. You've no idea how isolated it is out here. We were back on ops. again last night & had rather a shaky do. None of us got scratched but there are cannon & bullet holes all through the kite & in places there are great strips hacked off. Old Bill Bullen was very lucky for there are holes all through & around his turret. Still we were all in one piece so why worry.
I had a letter from Brendan [illegible word] & he was very down in the dumps indeed. He'd just lost his skipper at least half a dozen other chaps with whom we'd trained also “went in” from his squadron. Maurice McNamara also got the chopper from there. Still I'm being very cheerful aren't I?
I must also write Doreen & Dan from whom I received letters yesterday. Everyone seems quite well & hapy at the moment. Kev did fairly well with he Inter. By the way while I think of it don't bother to send me any further parcels for they are no longer necessary as we get all we want her – besides the old egg & bacon before & after each op.
Regards &O best wishes for the present.
Your loving brother Pat.

Dear Marie,
For some reason or other we have had very little Australian airmail over the last month. I am not blaming you at all for everyone seems to be in the same boat. I guess some of it must have gone astray somewhere. On the other hand I must apologise for my laxity. I’ve just returned from 9 days leave. Prior to that I had five trips to 3rd [one indecipherable word] in a week & was rather [two indecipherable words] for a start. However I started off with 5 days in the country.
With the aid of sleep, milk & eggs I was pretty fit when I left Dulverton for London. Of course I stayed once more with Ivan & Mrs Kemp & they are jolly decent to us. You may remember Bren & I went
[page break]
down there last June. Had a couple of days in London. Saw 2 shows & went along once to Hammersmith Palais where we struck a couple of decent bands – Lou Preager & Sydney Simone. You may have heard their records. Saw a very cleverly acted stage show. “Tomorrow the World” but thought the story rather weak & overstressed. We struck one glorious day in London [two indecipherable words] the fog & rain & Rog & I [two unreadable words] away the afternoon in [three or four indecipherable words].
She [two or three unreadable words] to talk us into [deleted word] [four or five unreadable words] we decided to [two or three indecipherable words] & have a day or so in Leicester or Leeds or somewhere. We were passing through Bedford at dinner time so hopped off there. Managed to get accommodation at a very nice little pub so had 2 quiet days there. Again saw a picture show & patronised a couple of hops.
People in there towns always are most hospitable to us & give us a
[page break]
very decent spin. What is more they always believe the line[?] we shoot – which I’m afraid is more than I can saw[sic] for our gallant Allies. I collected 3 parcels this morning & believed[sic] me I was pleased to see those pygamas[sic] – just what the doctor ordered. Thanks indeed – it is a pity they hadn’t arrived just a couple of days sooner but that is a mere detail. Also got a nice hamper from you as well as [one indecipherable word] from [one indecipherable word], I think it might actually be an idea if you [three or four indecipherable words] henceforth. We get [three or four indecipherable words] here & as we [four or five indecipherable words] irregular [four or five indecipherable words]. At least I should say perhaps weariness is stronger than the hunger. Moreover we get pretty good leave (one week in six) & the A.C.H. do us pretty well into the bargain. Hence I don’t think I’m justified in putting you to any further trouble over parcels – But believe me I did really appreciate them when I was on that last station – contd. on another
