NUREMBERG WAS ‘LAID FLAT’ [inserted] No 9 27/8 1943 [/inserted]
[boxed] ‘German [missing word] H.Q. [/boxed]
Few towns, even in Germany, can ever have received so shattering a blow in 40 minutes as medieval Nuremberg, the Bavarian “holy city” of the Nazi Party, which was the target of the vast armada of bombers that roared for more than an hour over South-East England late on Friday.
The result was summed up in one pregnant sentence by a rear-gunner on his return. He said: “ I reckon we knocked the whole place flat.” Here is the story of this great raid as told to the Sunday Express by the men who made it.
‘We’ve finished the job properly’
By EDWARD J. HART, [italics] Sunday Express Air Reporter [/italics]
A Lancaster Bomber Station, Saturday.
NUREMBERG, centre of some of Germany’s most vital war industries, was a seething bonfire when our very strong force of four engine bombers left the scene. Crews returning at dawn brought glowing descriptions of the effects of their heavy bombs and incendiaries.
[2 maps]
[italics] “The searchlights be[missing letter]ween Mannheim and Frankfort were five-deep in a continuous be[missing letter]t – just like a flare-path,” said the skipper of “ R for Robert,” back [missing letter]rom Nuremberg. “Anybody caught by them would have a job to get out.” [/italics]
A solid red core of leaping flames, with columns of jet black smoke billowing up to 15,000 feet and visible 150 miles away, was the word picture painted for me by Flight-Sergeant John Crabb, of Glasgow, navigator of “S for Sugar,” making his twenty-second raid on Germany.
“I never imagined a town could burn like that,” declared the rear gunner of “A for Apple,” Sergeant Harry Smith, a Cardiff man, on his 37th raid.
Weather conditions were very favourable for the raiders. They had clear skies all the way and excellent visibility over the target.
Packed area
Despite an exceptionally large force of enemy night fighters, the attack was completed to schedule.
It lasted from 12.30 a.m. till 1.12 a.m. Lancasters, Stirlings and Halifaxes took part in it.
IN 42 MINUTES OVER THE TARGET THEY DROPPED ABOUT 1,500 TONS.
“I reckon we knocked the whole place flat,” said Sergeant Fred Lamble, of Leeds, rear gunner in “C for Charlie.” It was his 19th operation. “We’ve finished the job properly,” he added. “There’ll be no more Brownshirt parties in that part of Germany.”
Lamble seems to have had a thoroughly enjoyable night. “We had our first bit of fun about ten miles inside France on the way in,” he said.
“Illuminations”
“It would have done your heart good to see our fighters – bags of them – banging away at locomotives; pumping in their tracer bullets against a vivid background of blue searchlights. It reminded you of the illuminations in Blackpool – lovely to look at.”
NUREMBERG, HE SAID, WAS A GOOD RUNNER-UP TO BERLIN. ITS FIGHTER DEFENCES WERE HEAVIER THAN BERLIN AND COMPARABLE WITH PEENEMUNDE.
“With plenty of fire, smoke, flak and searchlights it was everything you could wish for,” he commented.
Only one thing marred his joy. In vicil [sic] life he was a concert singer. Over the target he had promised the crew the baritone solo of the Prize Song of “The Meistersingers of Nuremberg” but just as he started the intercom system failed.
Fierce combats
Lamble refuses to believe it was accidental.
Other crews brought back stories of fierce combats with night fighters. Gunners of “D for Donald” had two encounters.
Mid upper gunner Sergeant Harry Wilkins, a former municipal clerk at Hull, said a Ju.88 passed just above him while they were making their bombing run. He fired at it, but did not see the result.
His skipper, Flight-Lieut. Robert Munro, a New Zealand farmer on his 65th operation, told me: “I’ve

never seen so many fighters in South Germany before.”
Sergeant William Walton, of Perth, rear-gunner of “J for Johnnie,” damaged an Me.109 just north of Nuremberg.
“I saw him coming in on the port quarter about 500 yards away and gave him a five-second burst,” said Walton.
Captain of “J for Johnnie,” Flying Officer Bruce Smeaton, of Manchester, who left school to join the R.A.F., reported a heavy concentration of searchlights.
“They nearly caught us going in and coming out,” he said. This was his eighteenth trip. He was in the Berlin raid.
Flying Officer Kenneth Coates, skipper of “R for Robert,” said the searchlights were five deep in a continuous belt – just like a flare path. “Anybody caught by them would have a job to get out,” he told me.
Flight Lieutenant Gobbie, who took part in a previous raid on Nuremberg, is also of the opinion that the old town has really “had it” this time.
Several crews saw friendly torches winking at them as they passed over France. They agreed that London’s black-out last night was far from good.
“It shook me rather badly,” one officer said.
One of the Lancaster squadrons taking part in last night’s raid was the first to drop bombs on a German target in this war. On September 4, 1939, six of its Hampden light bombers attacked the naval installations at Brunsbuttel.
Lights full on
The Squadron’s commander, Wing-Commander P.W. Johnson, A.F.C., gave me this summary of the Nuremberg raid:-
“I would definitely assess it as a major success. Nuremberg is a difficult target to find. It was very heavily bombed, and fires were started on the best and brightest scale. There is no doubt that the enemy night fighter effort has increased tremendously in recent weeks, but our defence against it is improving all the time.”
The station senior intelligence officer adds this footnote:-
“It was a very successful attack with well concentrated fires. Our crews encountered hundreds of fighters, many of them with navigation lights full on. This is quite a new departure. I cannot attempt to explain it. It makes an obvious target for our boys, but it may be intended as a decoy.”
IT IS OFFICIALLY STATED THAT 33 BOMBERS ARE MISSING FROM THE RAID – A SATISFACTORY PROPORTION CONSIDERING THE SIZE OF THE OPERATION. THE GERMANS, CLEARLY AS PROPAGANDA, CLAIM THAT 62 WERE SHOT DOWN AND SAY THAT “THIS WAS PROBABLY ONE-QUARTER OF THE WHOLE FORCE.”
The enemy communiqué describing the raid rather contradicts this by describing it as “a terror attack by strong British formations,” and says that it caused casualties among the population and heavy destruction in residential areas.
The German radio added: “Irreplaceable historical monuments of cultural value, including some parts of the Old Town Wall, and numerous churches fell victims to the high-explosives of the terror planes.”

Arms city wiped out in 18 minutes
By EDWARD J. HART
[italics] Sunday Express Air Reporter [/italics]
R.A.F. Bomber Station, Saturday.
REMSCHEID, medieval Rhineland city and centre of Germany's machine tool industry, had its first and probably last R.A.F. raid early today.
It was a thunder-and-lightning attack and lasted 18 minutes. By then Remscheid had been blasted by a load of bombs greater than fell on London during the heaviest 13-hour blitz of May 1941, and at least ten times greater than any raid on Britain this year.
The first waves of Lancasters, Stirlings and Halifaxes went in at 1.13 a.m., the last came out at 1.31.
As they recrossed the Dutch coast 200 miles from their target the homing air crews saw the glow of blazing Remscheid reflected against a thick pillar of black smoke.
No second time
"I do not think we shall have to pay it a second visit," a senior intelligence officer told me after interrogating the crews at this Halifax station in the North of England.
"Devastation seems to have been on the same scale as the Wuppertal raid on May 29. I put it well up in the higher class of bombing successes."
This view was shared by Group Captain H. H. Brookes, who accompanied our raiders as second pilot of Z for Zebra. Remscheid, he told me, is a city about the size of York.
"It was completely wiped up in one go," he added.
'Mushroom' fire
Captain of Z for Zebra was Squadron-Leader Peter Bunclark, D.F.C., D.F.M. His D.F.C. was awarded last Thursday.
Here are some descriptions of the Remscheid blasting from air crews who had bombed Hamburg three times in the previous six nights.
"The whole place was blazing like celluloid," "Fires like molten metal," "Just a bubbling sea of gold, silver, orange and red."
A navigator said that the outline of the blazing mass below exactly corresponded with the contour of his target map. He thought it uncanny. Remscheid measures 1.1/2 miles from east to west and 3 1/2 miles north to south.
Hitting the spot
Sergeant Reg Sloggett, former railway clerk from Manchester, was bomb-aimer in X for Xmas, last Halifax to leave the target area.
"It was a blazing mass when we went in and got bigger all the time," he told me. "I saw several terrific explosions and some of our bombs hitting the spot."
It was a clear night and, although night fighters were up in large numbers, there were no encounters by Halifaxes from this station, two of which are missing. Fifteen bombers in all were lost.
Remscheid's pre-war population of 107,000 is believed to have been greatly increased by the influx of foreign workers and refugees from neighbouring blitzed areas.
In the centre of the town are some 25 factories making machine tools and aircraft parts.

I was born in Posieke District Bialyste[sic], Poland 17th March 1911 of Polish Nationality.
My father Franciszek Nogal deceased January 1931

both parents of Polish Nationality.
I attended schools at Wyszkow on River Bug District Warsaw. My father was employed by Polish Railways. I have two brothers and two sisters. My elder brother, Tadeuz Nogal, married with three children lives in Warsaw holding an executive post at Head Office of Polish Railways. His address is 87 Oliwska Steet, Warsaw 9.

Younger sister Vanda married to Stationmaster Wladyslaw Pudlo, with two children, lives at 30 Podhalanska Street, Nowy Sacz District Krakow.
I left school at 18 to volunteer to Polish Air Force. 1930 I became a Pilot with rank of Non-Commissioned Officer and was posted to one of the squadrons at Warsaw. After five years flying I applied to the Air Ministry for permission to join Officers’ Training College. Permission was granted and after exams I joined the College. My training lasted three years. At the end of that period I was promoted to Second Lieutenant (Pilot Officer) and

was posted to Lwow (Lemberg) South East of Poland where I was till the beginning of war 1939. I took part in short battle of Poland flying in reconnaissance squadrons. 18th September 1939 when all was over I flew to Rumania and landed near Czerniowice where I was disarmed and sent to Detention Camp at Tulcea. On the 22nd of October I escaped to Balcio which is a small fishing port on Black Sea where on the 5th November that year I boarded Greek ship Papagos and was on my way through Constantinople, Malta and Marseilles to join Polish Air Force in France.
13th November I arrived at Lyon. Through Winter 1939 and early Spring 1940 I was put in uniform again in the rank of Sous-Lieutant and was at Lyon Bron training to fly various types of French aircraft in preparation to join Polish Squadrons but in May 1940 I was sent on loan to French Air Force and was posted to No. 301 base at Chateaudun. There our main job was to protect the base against German sorties and evacuate aircraft and equipment to the South of France.
At the end of May I left France, flying from Marseilles to Algiers where I received an order from the Polish Authority in England to report as soon as possible to that Country, where Polish Squadrons had already been organised. As a result of that order I left Algiers by train to Oran and Casablanca, from Casablanca by boat to Gibraltar and again by boat to Liverpool. After a short rest at Blackpool I have [inserted] BEEN [/inserted] posted to R.A.F. Station, Benson, Oxfordshire for refresher course.
In December 1940 I joined Polish Squadron 305 at Syerston, Nottingham. On 3rd May 1941 I was shot down over Germany and taken prisoner of war.

1945 – after the war – I returned to England where I was stationed at various R.A.F. units in Great Britain, until I was demobilised in 1949. Meantime, in 1948, I married Miss Jean Margaret Glindon at the Registry Office, Epsom.
After my demobilisation I was employed by Messrs. E.L. Wallis & Son Solicitors, as Clerk/Interpreter at Hereford. My wife at that time lived with her widowed mother at Cheam, Surrey, working as a Hairdresser.
In 1949 our daughter Wanda Elizabeth was born.
By the end of September that year they moved to Kingston, taking a flat at 37 Lancaster Close. Two months after, I left Hereford and joined my family in Kingston, finding myself a new job with Moss Bros. London. March 1951 I changed my job again and joined Phillips Furnishing Stores, where I am up to the present time. I am responsible here for Central Merchandise Office, which consists of Buying Office, Wages Department, Petty Cash and General Office Manager, etc. etc.

28th August 1944.
Dear All,
Miss Thomas gave me the splendid news about Ronald early this morning and, believe me, all at home and at the office are delighted.
I thought first of wiring you, but wires give one such a shock at these times and you have had enough without me adding to them.
However, I [underlined] do [/underlined] congratulate you on your good fortune – you have been very brave and richly deserve your reward.
I cannot express quite what I feel, so will just wait until I see him.
Kindest regards,
Yours sincerely,

20th June 1944
Dear Mr. and Mrs. Riding,
The Cubs and I would like so much to say how very sorry we are to hear Ron has been posted "Missing".
To us all he has been, and always will be a hero in every sense of the word and we shall continue in the future as we have done in the past, to pray for his [underlined] safe return. [/underlined]
In the meantime may you both be strengthened with courage and fortitude during the very anxious period of waiting for news comforted, we hope in small measure, by the thought that many, many loving hearts are hoping and waiting too, with you.
Sincerely yours
Tiny Parkinson

HULL TIMES, MARCH 14, 1969
RODE THROUGH ENEMY TERRITORY ON BICYCLE MADE FOR TWO
[sketch] Shot down, he took part in French Resistance raids on Germans
IT IS DIFFICULT to imagine Ronald Riding taking part in armed sabotage raids in occupied France or in any country for that matter. But in 1944 a lot of men were finding that they could do things they had never imagined possible.
Desperate circumstances have always called for desperate actions and when it is a question of survival the quietest people can become very determined opponents.
With his wife Gwyneth and his 11-year-old daughter Lynn, Ronald Riding leads a peaceful unexceptional life at his home at Brocklesby – close First-lane, Hessle.
By day he works as an electrical engineer in the City Architect's Department at Hull Guildhall.
Twenty-five years ago, at the age of 23 Ronald was part way through his second tour of operations.
His first had been in the Middle East, but now, with No. 7 Squadron at RAF Oakington, he was seeing action over Europe.
The Allies were preparing for the D-Day invasion on June 6, and information had been received that the 21st Panzer Division were under cover in a strategic position north of Rouen.
On the night of June 5, Fg.-Off. Riding took off in a Lancaster bomber together with a main force of 200 aircraft in an attempt to flush out and destroy the Germans.
His aircraft was carrying flares as well as bombs, as No. 7 Squadron was then a pathfinder squadron.
As navigator, Ronald would have no time to let his mind wander from the job of getting the aircraft to the target.
All went as planned on the trip to France, and the crew silently prayed that their luck would hold out as they approached the target area.
At 01.00 hours, two hours after they had taken off, the enemy began to become more accurate with their anti-aircraft fire.
Flack was exploding all round the Lancaster, and suddenly the great aircraft recoiled from the impact of a direct hit.
The wireless operator was killed where he sat and the mid-upper gunner badly wounded. In the bomb bay the flares ignited and the aircraft became like a ball of fire.

FO RONALD RIDING
From the pilot came the command to bale out. The question arose of what to do about the wounded gunner, and Ronald and the rear-gunner elected to try to get him out of the aircraft.
Between them they hurriedly rigged up a static line which would open his parachute after they had helped him out of the aircraft.
At the controls, the pilot desperately fought to keep the blazing plane flying until the rest of the crew had left.
Finally, the injured man, by now barely conscious, was dropped into the night.
Ronald watched as the parachute opened, then dismay gripped him as the material caught fire and the gunner, perhaps mercifully, plunged to his death.
The rear gunner left next, and then it was Ronald's turn. He jumped. A few seconds later the skipper followed.
A tug on the ripcord and the parachute billowed out, causing such a jerk that Ronald lost both his flying boots.
He watched as the aircraft, now a mass of flames, careered crazily about the sky. It alarmed him. He thought it might cut back and collide with him.
He watched it all the way down as it passed below him and crashed into a forest.
A few minutes later he was down himself, after narrowly avoiding a watery landing in the Seine. He too found himself in a pine forest and around him were the sounds of guns being fired.
Now an electrical engineer in Hull City Architect's Department, Mr Ronald Riding looks with his wife and 11-year-old daughter Lynn at a map of the area of his wartime exploits.
[underlined] Ominous [/underlined]
Fortunately he had escaped injuries and he hastily hid his parachute before setting out with the intention, somehow, of finding his way home.
Around him were various noises. The most intense was the sound of dogs barking. It seemed as though every dog in the country was loose and terrified.
Then through all the clamour of dogs and guns came the more ominous sound of German troops – Incredibly they were singing.
Ronald set off away from the happy-sounding enemy. He thought of the ridiculous side of the situation – walking, alone, at night, behind the enemy lines and without shoes.
The first building he came to was a farmhouse, and after a few minutes debating with himself he plucked up courage to knock at the door and ask for help.
The farmer appeared at an upstairs window and promptly told him to go away. An argument ensued between the man and his wife, and eventually Ronald was admitted to the dwelling.
He was told that they would shelter him until the morning, but then he would have to go on alone. He was given a meal and later he slept.
At the crack of dawn the farmer sent him on his way, apologising for the fact that he could not let him have any shoes.
[drawing]
The Germans made a full-scale attack on their camp with troops and armoured vehicles.
[underlined] In touch [/underlined]
Throughout the day he stumbled on, keeping to cover in the thick woods of the area. Towards dusk he came across an old woman standing outside her cottage enjoying the evening and smoking a clay pipe.
Without hesitation she invited him inside and together with her husband fed him and found him a bed.
Ronald asked them how he could get in touch with "the organisation" – the resistance movement which could get him back to England.
Later the same day two of the old woman's sons came to see him. They departed after a few questions and returned later with six of the senior resistance leaders.
He was closely questioned, to determine if in fact he was an English aviator or a spy planted by the Germans. The men left with the warning that he was to keep under cover but not to leave the small farm.
For three days Ronald laid low, and escaped detection from the Germans by hiding under a pile of logs when they arrived unexpectedly one day and searched the premises.
[underlined] By tandem [/underlined]
On the third day the resistance members returned and gave him a French identity card and a pair of wooden sabots.
He was then taken from the farm and led to a road where he was shown his means of transport to the next meeting point.
This turned out to be a tandem and the next 15 miles were spent furiously cycling and staring at the back of a very determined French guide.
Eventually at a pre-arranged point they were picked up and taken by car to the central headquarters of the local resistance. This was a large farm with about 200 men living and training there to carry on the underground war against their oppressors.
The camp was quite well organised considering the difficulties under which the men were operating. Ronald later learned that it was supplied by air from England every two weeks with rations and arms, and that it was the training ground of new recruits from the cities.
One of the most noticeable things about the camp was the very young age of the people there.
Youths of 16 and 17 made up the body of the force. There were also two woung [sic] women wireless operators in communication with London.
[underlined] Instructor [/underlined]
The group held 12 German prisoners guarded by Russian and Italian soldiers. As he [indecipherable words] these men were hostages, but at the moment were made to be useful by doing the cooking and minor chores on the farm.
The first question he was asked was would he be willing to help the Resistance. When he replied that he would he was given a Browning machinegun and assigned the duties of training the raw recruits in its use. He was given an officer's rank and settled down to his new job.
All things being considered, he had very little choice. Although he knew that he should be trying still to reach hime [sic], he had the feeling that London knew where he was and was content to let him remain there.
After all, the work he was doing was as important in its own way as the main effort being directed from London.
[underlined] Fought convoy [/underlined]
The group was between 40 and 50 miles behind the enemy lines and the Germans were under constant pressure from the Resistance.
Their main targets were the scout cars and small patrols active in the area, and raids on these were carried out efficiently and regularly.
As they gained in confidence they began to look for more ambitious targets. One night they mounted an attack on a fairly large convoy and miraculously created havoc without suffering casualities.
A few nights later they attacked a battery of anti-aircraft guns, but this time they were not so fortunate. Many of the group were killed or wounded, but they managed to take back with them a handful of German prisoners.
Ronald's main worry was the lack of discipline among the youths with the group.
Prize possessions among the boys were jackboots or Luger pistols. To get these they would go out on their own, looking for solitary German soldiers. These men were killed without compunction and robbed of their possessions.
[underlined] Hostages [/underlined]
Apart from these over-enthusiastic youngsters, however, the group was close and well organised. They also had the support of the farmers in the area, who contributed food supplies often to their own detriment.
It did not surprise Ronald when at last the Germans decided to put an end to activities of the resistance group.
They did this in a way most calculated to bring them out in the open. They took 10 hostages in Rouen and threatened to shoot them if the actions continued.
A party of resistance members attempted to rescue the hostages but the Germans were waiting for [missing words] attempt ended it [missing words] the men were caught, questioned and publicly shot.
[underlined] Over-run [/underlined]
As a reprisal, it was decided to take similar action against the Germans by shooting the dozen or so prisoners held at the camp. This decision was arrived at after much consideration but was never carried out.
Before the appointed time for the executions, the camp was subjected to a full-scale attack by the Germans. At 5.0 o'clock one morning the farm was over-run by troops and armoured vehicles.
The resistance was all but wiped out, and it was every man for himself in the flight that followed Ronald managed to escape with a young French man, but later they decided to split up to give them a better chance of surviving.
For two days he kept out of sight, living as best he could. Then he heard that the British lines were close by and he tried to contact them without success.
The three days that followed were desperate. Nobody wanted to know an ex-resistance man. Word had spread that the Germans were looking for the ones who had escaped, and the penalty for assisting a man on the run was death.
[underlined] Better luck [/underlined]
Eventually he arrived at the town of Thiberville and asked again for help. Here he met with better luck, and for the next three weeks he was passed from family to family, always being kept out of sight.
Towards the end of August there was a leaflet raid on the town, telling the townspeople to leave as the Allied troops would be arriving very soon.
Ronald left with the family who were sheltering him and for the next 10 days camped with them in a small hut outside the town.
On the eleventh day he ventured back into the town and was greeted by a Toronto Scottish regiment marching down the road.
One week later he was back in London, after three months on the run behind the enemy lines.

Dear Mr and Mrs Riding,
No words of mine can possibly help alleviate the heavy hearts you both must have right now after hearing Ron is reported missing yet I feel I must write to let you know how deeply grieved and how much I sympathise with you.
Ron and I have been good friends for two years – we would pull one anothers legs, go out together and have plenty of fun, never did we have wrong words consequently you can tell I miss his pleasant company more than I care to openly show in camp.
I was asked to refrain from writing [indecipherable word] this to you since I believe our C.O. was sending confidential details along, these may prove to be sufficient to

Dear Mr & Mrs Riding,
We were all very grieved at the club on Saturday evening to hear that your boy is missing, the committee and members wish you to know that their thoughts are with you during this anxious time you are passing through.
It may be a little consolation to you to know I was wounded and taken prisoner in the last war and Mrs Wall was 7 months before she knew what had happened to me so you must never give up because it takes quite a long time for any particulars to be sent from an enemy country to England. Mrs Wall and I know what it means to you, and so how hard it seems Keep your chins up and put your trust in God [deleted word] and everything will come right.
With kindest regards
Yours Sincerely
W Wall.

My dear Mrs Riding
I have wanted to write you since I heard the news but thought I would wait a bit & perhaps you will be feeling a bit better by now. It has been a dreadful shock for us all, but in my own heart I feel sure Ronnie is safe. He couldn't be anything else, I feel so sure, - I know you have got a great hope for him & I have the same. He will come back to us one day. I say in my prayers every night for his safety, & trust God will bring him back. Ronnie is a good lad & I think of him next to my own son
[page break]
so you may be sure if thoughts & prayers can do anything – I will do my utmost for his return. Keep your chin up, Mrs Riding, & all will be well. I'll try & come & see you at my first opportunity. Remember us here to Mr Riding & Connie, & heres hoping for speedy news.
With love to you
Yours very sincerely
Dorothy [two indecipherable words]

My dear Mrs Riding
Please accept my deepest sympathy in this trying hour.
I am deeply grateful that you have written & told me. I do hope & expect that you will hear favourable news, though of course as you no doubt know & expect it will take a long while before you hear anything.
It came as rather a shock to me mainly because Ron and I were such good friends. I have his Photo in [deleted word] the few I brought out with me. One I took of hm at Greenwood threatening him with a snowball.
I'm keeping quite fit out here considering except for one or two minor risks. Fortunately for us we only have the weather to contend with & that is a lot to be
