Dearest,
I’ve realised that if I write tonight you’ll get a letter on Saturday morning, so I thought I’d try and give you a pleasant surprise. Incidentally, the reason why you don’t usually get one then is because I usually write at weekend so that you get one [deleted] Sat [/deleted] Monday, & then every other day after that.
I’ve just been realising how browned off I am because it’s a long time since I’ve seen you. I expect you’re feeling the same, but I don’t seem to have any energy or interest for anything – either work or recreation. Most of the time
[page break]
2
when I’m conscious, I seem to be working out how long it will be before I see you again.
Of course it would be better if I’d plenty to do, but, for the past fortnight or more, we seem to have had one long succession of clamps, when there’s been nothing to do except sit in the flight office. What it’s going to be like in the winter I tremble to think.
The farmers here are having a difficult job with the harvest, In the fields, near the aerodrome perhaps 1/3 to 1/2 of the corn has been cut & is in stooks, but there are days & days when it’s impossible for them to do any work at all.
We had a little light
[page break]

relief this afternoon. A chap who lives at Cartmel (DSO, DFC & bar) is a Lancaster pilot & came over to do some steep turns round his home. The C.O. went up in the Maggie to chase him, but it was the Lanc that did most of the chasing. When the C.O. landed, the Lanc did a beautiful beat-up of the aerodrome. It really was amazing to see the Lanc manoeuvring as though it were as light as a Tiger Moth. Flying Control reported him for low flying, but when the C.O. said it was a friend of his they withdrew the complaint.
I don’t think there’s
[page break]

any more news.
I seem to be doing fairly well as far as money is concerned. Practically everything I spend is on my mess bill, so that I need very little cash. I haven’t cashed a cheque this month, but I shall have nearly £10 when I go to Farnworth on Monday, so you don’t need to have much more than your fare.
I’m simply longing to see you again, darling. It makes me wonder sometimes whether it’s a good thing being married, as there’s such an ache when I’m away from you. Still, once I’d met you, there was nothing else for it,
[page break]

as I certainly shouldn’t be content to be merely engaged, or, even worse, have you as a friend. It’s simply wonderful to be married to you, darling, & I wouldn’t be un-married for anything.
All my love,
Harold
P.S. I took the V.R.s. out of my shoulder straps on my greatcoat last night. Unfortunately I unpicked your sewing on one of them, not realising I could do it without, so I’ll bring it on Monday for you to sew at your leisure.

Dearest,
I got your welcome letter at lunch time today, & like you, can hardly wait until next Monday.
I’m very interested to learn about Kendal. Frankly, I don’t know what to say, because I’d like to have you near me up here, but I’m a bit dubious about this P.T. racket. I don’t think you need worry about not getting the job. Mr. Wilson said that nowadays adverts might not get a single reply, or at most, one or two. The only question is whether you want to take it. Whatever you think will suit you best will suit
[page break]

me, & of course, if it means an extra visit to this part of the world, well and good.
Alice is going to send the bike to Grace, so she should have it in a day or two. I hope it proves useful.
I’m glad you like “The Man who was Thursday.” It’s very good, isn’t it, and a refreshing change from the ordinary novel. If you finish “Passed to You, Please”, perhaps you could bring it up to Farnsworth with you, but it doesn’t matter, as it’s more important for you to have a book to read than for me.
I’m sorry I was so cryptic about “I see Ice”, but we looked through the paper to see the film that would be
[page break]

most suitable for Mary, & decided on George Formby.
I’ve been looking at the Manchester Guardian this week. There’ll be a play on, “The Wind & the Rain”, & also, I think, Leslie Howard’s film “The Gentle Sex,” but I’ll have a look on Monday morning at the week’s programmes.
I think I shall probably wangle the extra day. The only snag is that officially we’re supposed to notify the Adjutant if we’re away from camp for a night, & if he finds that [deleted] O [/deleted] I shall be taking three days instead of two, he’ll put his
[page break]

foot down. Anyway, I’m not due in until Thursday morning, so I shall tell him that I’m going on a 48 & not turn up until Thursday evening.
You seem to have had some good weather. It has been lousy here until the last two days when there has been a little improvement. Even so, it was too windy last night for us to taxy. My pupil just gave up at one point, and it was as much as I could do to control the aircraft on the ground.
I’m sending the ring with this letter. I’m not very satisfied with it, especially as it’s too big, so chuck it
[page break]

away if it’s no good. Anyway, all my love went into the making of it, even if the results aren’t good.
Only five more days now, darling.
All my love,
Harold.
P.S. I’ve deliberately made the ring thicker than the other one, so that it won’t break so easily.

Dearest,
The parcel came this afternoon. Thank you very much, darling. I had been a little worried about it, as you’d said several days ago that you were going to post it.
I haven’t yet made formal application for my 48, but shall do so tomorrow. It will be on Tuesday & Wednesday of next week, but I shall try to wangle Thursday [deleted] off [/deleted] as my day off as well. I can’t promise that, but I’ll see what I can do, and as Bod will [deleted] by [/deleted] be C.F.I. that week (Basher on leave), I may be able to manage it.

If I can, I shall try to meet you in Manchester, probably at the bus stop, as I’m not sure how much time I shall have to go to London Road, so don’t wait for me at the station but go straight to the bus. If I can’t get off early, I shall go direct to Farnworth.
The weather has been simply filthy all day, & the grass where we park our aircraft is inches deep in water. If we fly tonight, which is more than a little doubtful, I shall put my gum boots on, because it’s no joke walking in that sort of grass in the dark.
I have written to Alice to thank her for the trouble she took about the furniture, & asking her to tell Mr. Dean to
[page break]

go ahead with the house. I’m inclined to agree with you about doing our own business ourselves in future, but when one is so far away, it seems a pity not to use people who are willing to help.
I’ve just realised that, all being well, I shall be with you a week tonight. Jolly good, isn’t it?
Get a camp bed if you think it would be worth it, but I don’t quite see why we need one, as we’ve already got your divan in case we should want to put anyone up.
I nearly had a taxying
[page break]

accident today! I was taxying out of dispersal on to the perimeter track, and the wind caught me as I was turning, & kept swinging me round. Perhaps you remember trying to taxy when it was windy.
Owing to the rain, there was water on the brake drums & my starboard brake wouldn’t work, so I just swung round, off the perimeter track, & came to a halt in a shallow ditch that some workmen had dug. Fortunately, there was no damage done, not even a scratch. The only sufferer was my amour propre!

Thursday
Dearest,
Sorry I didn’t get your letter off first thing this morning, but I was too tired at 2.30 a.m. last night to cycle round to the Mess to post it, & I didn’t get up until midday.
I’m very much tempted to send your watch with this parcel but I’ll play safe & keep it until I meet you.
All my love,
Harold

Dearest,
I went to St Anne’s yesterday to see Dad. He looks a lot better but isn’t very strong, & his back isn’t very sure yet. I think it did him good to see me.
The visit made me glad we didn’t go to Blackpool when you were up here. If I had to spend a holiday there I should go mad. Queues everywhere. It was impossible to get tea in Blackpool, & when I reached my train, 35 minutes before it started, there were perhaps a dozen seats left. When we set off there were 7 standing in my compartment. Fortunately, I was able to ring up the Mess from Preston, & order
[page break]

a late dinner, but otherwise I should have been famished.
I’m amused to find you wanting to keep my letters, as it was you who first insisted on our burning them. But I agree with you that after two years of marriage we are a lot closer together than I should have thought possible – more sympathique [sic], at least I think that’s the word for it.
I’ve finished the Twilight of France – on the train yesterday, & thought it very good. I’ll send it off tomorrow.
I was asked to go to the flicks tonight, but it was a Robertson Hare – Alfred Draycott film, & I’ve not much time for them. Instead I stayed in the Mess long enough to get caught in a storm on my way back to the billet,
[page break]

so I had to get straight into bed, where I’m writing this letter.
The films I’ve seen recently are: The Road to Morocco,
George Formby’s I see Ice (with Mary)
In Which we Serve – good, but a bit too much of a tribute to Noel Coward.
No Time for Love.
I’ve seen so many that I don’t think I’ll go again until I’m able to go with you.
I don’t see why Grace shouldn’t have my bike if she thinks it worth having. The back brake is u/s, the saddle is broken, & it’s permanently in top gear, but I’ll get Alice to send it on.
[page break]
4
I don’t think we can charge her anything, though, unless you want to. I think it would be better for her to have it as long as she wants it & then we can keep it or scrap it afterwards. It’s only a little thing to do for her, & I think she’s done a lot for us, so if she’d like it I should be very glad for her to have it.
It’s a bit rich, though, isn’t it, that she has to consider prisoners of war in this way in order to retain their services! I hope our chaps in Italy & Germany get the same consideration.
The watch is going steadily, has gained 15 minutes in about four days.
The Moodies seem quite

happy at Hillcrest. He says Mrs. Moodie is physically 100% better for the move
All my love, darling.
Harold.

Dearest,
I’ve just gone through a pile of old letters, most of them from you, tearing them up so that the batman can destroy them. I still think my old idea of keeping your letters is a better scheme; it simply cuts me to the heart to destroy them, as they seem almost like a part of you. Your letters are the nearest I get to you, nowadays, & that’s why they are so precious.
I’ve read a fair amount – about 80 pages – of The Twilight of France. I haven’t made as much progress as I expected, because it’s pretty condensed,
[page break]
2
and unless you read it carefully it becomes meaningless.
I am enclosing the bank’s monthly statement – forgot to send it earlier. In case I actually forget to include it, the amount is £103..16..5. Not bad is it?
Have you seen my address book anywhere? I haven’t had it for months, & I’m wondering whether it’s at Newhouse or in Farnworth. If you happen to see it (a green book, diary size) perhaps you’d bring it when you come to Farnworth (a fortnight tonight!)
Tuesday 4.30 p.m.
I’m finishing this off before going to the Mess for tea. Then I shall go to Grange & see Miss Westwood on the 5.30 bus,
[page break]
3
meet Gillegin at 7.15 in time to go to the flicks, catch the 9.30 bus, have a late supper, & start night flying at 10.30. Quite a full programme isn’t it?
I suppose the absence if references to my health convinced you that I’m O.K. By Friday, I was as fit as ever. I certainly wish I could have the special attention you gave me at Ossington. There’s nothing like it!
As for the bed at home, they are proposing to have it in the sitting room more or less permanently, as Dad’s back might go at any time, & Mother
[page break]
4
couldn’t look after him upstairs.
I don’t quite know what to say about your staying at Newhouse. It’s probably the most useful war job you could get (least wasted effort, I mean), & probably, all things considered, the most remunerative.
On the other hand, we shall lose more than we gain if you have to stick at something you don’t like. If it will be all right to leave them & we can find a place in Bolton, that would be the best thing from our point of view, but anything you decide will be O.K. with me, because it’s you who are primarily concerned.
If you think you’d
[page break]
5
be in Bolton for 2 years, I should say it would be well worth while to move. Have you found out whether it’s possible to get one’s furniture moved?
As for this business of buying a house, if your Mother will allow us the use of her capital, it seems to me to be a very good investment, almost regardless of whether we live in it or not. We ought to be able to sell it for more than we’ve paid for it, anyway.
Your watch stopped while I was at home, but in the last 24 hours it seems to have gained 5 minutes, rather
[page break]
6
than lost.
The Moodie’s have had a big bust-up with their landlady, & today have moved to Hillcrest, so I shall be interested to see how they get on with Mrs. Banks.
I don’t know what you imagined I’d expect Bert to want – a still born son? You’re as bad as Alice, who said that a certain woman had three children, twins!
All my love,
Harold.

Dearest,
Judging by the weather we’re getting at present, it’s going to be a long time before Grace finishes her hay. We did some night flying tests in a break in the rain, & the clouds were still 6-700 feet, & now its pouring down again. Still, if it’s not too wet this evening, I think I’ll go to the army camp to see “In which we serve.”
That will make the third flick in three days - too much really. On Friday, Mother asked me to take Alice out as she hadn’t been for a long time, & on Saturday, Mary begged
[page break]
2
to go. I don’t mind taking them, but I object to being unable to take you. I often find I have to start thinking of something else when I think on those lines, as otherwise our separation becomes unbearable.
We had nothing to do this morning, so we started working out 48s & leaves. I’ve put my name down for the 24th – 25th of August, & provisionally for the 10th – 19th of September, but I expect I can change the latter to any other dates that suit you.
I hope I haven’t put you out by this furniture question. It struck me as a bright idea, but I hadn’t realised that we should have nowhere to
[page break]
3
store it. We could put it in our garage, but it would get very damp there if left for any length of time.
Mary asked me to tell you that since your visit she has become the best in the class at drill!
Alice is rather perturbed at the prices we have to pay for things nowadays. She says we can have the carpet in her bedroom when we get a flat; it’s not a good one, she says, but would do as a makeshift. She also offers us a tablecloth & [deleted] tea clo [/deleted] afternoon tea cloths, & cutlery too, if we need it. It
[page break]
4
might pay us to have a look round the Manse to see what we can pick up!
Thanks for the book. I’ve looked at the introduction, so far, & it seems good. It will be all right for you to send your next list in, if you haven’t already done so, as I shall have finished it in a day or two.
The letter was most welcome last night, as I got it at 12.30 a.m., when I was wet through after walking from the station. I had a seat all the way from Bolton, but Lancaster station sickened me. There were hordes of people there who’d been to Morecambe, lots of them boys & girls of no more
[page break]
5
than 16 or 17, all tight, & necking openly in the most disgusting fashion. (Of course, I expect my disgust was heightened by the fact that I hadn’t got you with me!)
Still, it certainly was a scandalous affair, & it made me wonder what the country is coming to. My contemporaries never [deleted] whe [/deleted] went to those lengths when we were at the same age. It seems to me that something will have to be done about this moral deterioration, or else winning the war will be a waste of time. Yet when I consider a lot of the men on the camp, they are really no better, if
[page break]
6
usually a little more discreet. What do you think about this business?
I think you’ve perhaps got something in the idea of buying a house. I suppose we can raise the money (?) & it would probably be the best kind of investment we could make. I notice that there are usually several adverts of houses for sale in the Bolton Evening News, & Dad & Arthur Rigby, between them, know enough about houses in Bolton to be able to tell us what is worth having. (Buying & selling houses, & letting them, is one of Arthur’s sidelines).
I’m glad to hear about the cushions for the chairs. I think you must be getting through a terrific amount of
[page break]
7
work at Newhouse. I hope you’re not overdoing it. It’s a pity you can’t come & have a lazy time doing my job for a change. I’m fed up with having nothing to do.
I called about the bike, but there’s still no news. He’s had none in since May, so I expect we’ve a long time to wait yet. If you see one you want in Abergavenny, I should get it, because you’ll never want one more than you do now.
Railway voucher enclosed.
All my love, darling.
Harold.

Farnworth,
Saturday.
Dearest,
If this letter is a little disjointed you’ll have to blame it on Jennifer, who seems to find her chief amusement in playing with me.
I got here at 5.45 yesterday, coming on the 4.10 from Preston, - the one you & I waited for. In Bolton I met Norris Parker, who was very cut up because Geoffrey is missing – from the Hamburg raid a week last Thursday, when we lost 28. It was [inserted] his [/inserted] first trip after coming back from leave.
[page break]
2.
Dad wasn’t [inserted] completely [/inserted] better yesterday but he managed to go off to St Annes, although Alice carried his case to Bolton. He will be there a fortnight, from the 6th to the 20th.
Mother thinks it a good idea for us to try to get a house, difficult though it may be, & she suggests, if you like, that you should stay on here for a few days & have a look round after I’ve gone back.
She was very pleased indeed that we used this house when we wanted. I don’t think anything could have pleased her more. They both like
[page break]
3
our dinner service. Alice would swap hers for ours if we would agree, as she thinks it much nicer.
I’ve seen in the Journal an advertisement of an auction sale next Wednesday in Bolton. I think the only things of interest are easy chairs & possibly a sideboard. I suggested that Alice should go & look at them on Tuesday & buy a couple of chairs if they are suitable. I’m sending the advert. What do you think? Perhaps I can get Alice to ring you up on Tuesday if she goes to look & thinks they are worth getting. I’ve no idea what
[page break]
4
price we ought to pay. Would £10 for the two be too much or too little?
It’s been quite nice here, but but [sic] it’s not the same without you. I had the double bed in Mother’s room to myself last night. Mother was with Alice & Mary at her other grandma’s. It seemed an awful waste to be there on my own. When Mary came this morning, her first words were “Where’s Auntie Lilian?”
In just over a fortnight I shall see you again, darling, & then in another month I shall get some leave, so I’m beginning to think that the time will be
[page break]
endurable.
Bob has received the razor, & has had his best shave for six months, so it was worth getting it. Norman is now in Sicily.
All my love,
Harold.
On talking it over with Alice, she says she’ll go & have a look at the stuff on Tuesday, but she’d like you to reply by return – instead of phoning, to say (a) what you’d like her to try for
(b) what price she should go to.
You can be assured that she won’t buy anything unless she really thinks it worth the money.
[page break]
If you don’t think much if the stuff advertised, don’t hesitate to say so. She’s quite willing to get it for us, but just the same, she won’t be sorry to be let out of it.
Finally, Mother has just raised the storage question, to which my only suggestion is to get the auctioneer to store it for a few weeks.
All things considered, perhaps you would let Alice know whether you think it’s worth going on with, & if so, what you want, & at what price.
Harold

Dearest,
I’m writing this in the afternoon, just after getting up, so I don’t know whether a letter has arrived for me to reply to.
I hope I didn’t upset you with the suggestion that you should come to Farnworth this week-end. I don’t know if you will phone or not, but I’m not expecting you to decide to come. I don’t think you would be comfortable in Farnworth, because although it’s easy for me to be crowded in with the rest of them, it’s quite another thing for you. Mother wrote in her last letter that Dad’s back “went” again
[page break]
2
when he came home from Buxton, & she doesn’t think he’ll be fit to go to St. Anne’s this week. It’s a mess, isn’t it? After doing all he can to get it better, he’s suddenly reduced to the same state as before. I give it up,
11.0 p.m.
I stopped at this point, as I wasn’t feeling too good – in fact, I nearly paid a visit to the M.O. Now I’ve rested all evening in the Mess I feel much better & shall be all right after some sleep.
The trouble is that I haven’t slept well after being on all night, & so am feeling tired. In addition, last night there was a prang, & I had to walk through tall wet grass to have a look at it, & then sit in my wet things, so I think I’ve got a bit of a cold.
I was very glad to get your letter today, but am sorry
[page break]
3
that mine have been held up. You should have had one on Saturday, Monday, & today, so I haven’t been quite as remiss as would appear. (My pen has run dry.)
I’m enclosing a letter from Dora, giving their views on the possibility of getting a house in Bolton. Doesn’t seem very hopeful, does it?
You certainly had a picnic on Saturday, didn’t you! I should have loved to have seen you & Grace & the cart. I was going to add that you were clever enough to find a car, but since you had to walk back in the rain, you weren’t so well off after all.
As for getting the Austin, I don’t quite know. I’ll try & find
[page break]
4
out about using a borrowed car on Ops, but I naturally assumed that it would have to be one’s own.
I certainly don’t want to part with the chairs until we’re sure of something else. They’ll be far better than packing cases, which are what I feared we should have to sit on.
Your watch appears to be losing five minutes a day at present, so it isn’t doing too badly.
I should like to try on the pullover when you come to Farnworth next. I’ve got a shirt socks & towel to send you (there’s no need to wash anything). I’d have sent them today, but I didn’t feel up to it.
Two planes had to go to Bobbington for modification, so I went in another to fetch the two pilots back.
5
I feel there are lots of other things I want to tell you, but can’t remember.
On Monday I had a new experience – acted as time-keeper at the station boxing match. Personally, I thought the whole business rather disgusting, & have no desire ever to go to another boxing match. It seems crazy to stand there & get hurt for pleasure – don’t you think so?
Aircrew are now becoming milk drinkers. We are entitled to half a pint a day, & it looks rather funny to see a crowd of confirmed beer-drinkers standing round the bar drinking their milk.
You talk about the time
[page break]
6
passing slowly when you’re not with me, but I’m just the same. It seems at least a month since I started this O i/c racket, & years since I saw you. Actually it’s not quite a fortnight yet.
I wish I was with you darling, but it can’t be helped. If Hitler will only follow Musso’s example quickly, the war will soon be over.
All my love,
Harold

Dearest,
All yesterday & most of Saturday I had this thought at the back of my mind – there’ll be a letter on Monday. Although I had expected it, I was still very pleased to find it waiting for me at lunch time.
My night work is going on very well so far – two scrubs out of four. At this rate it will prove a rest cure. I think I shall finish my period on Thursday night & have Saturday off. Since I shall be on duty till 6.0 a.m. or later on Friday, I shan’t turn up at the flight on that day, but will catch the first convenient train to Farnworth & return on Saturday evening. If our house weren’t so full up I’d ask you to come too; in fact I could carry on my

night flying a day longer if it would give you more time to come. On the other hand, they would have to reorganise their sleeping arrangements – although they’d do it gladly.
My original idea was to have a day there to see what I could do about a house; it was only as an afterthought that I considered the possibility of your “mucking in” with the crowd. If you do decide to come, ring me up on Wednesday night & let me know whether you’d prefer me to have Saturday or Sunday off. I shall be in the Mess all evening, in any case, so you’d be sure of finding me, but don’t put yourself to the trouble of phoning if you’re not coming.
The weather is still quite warm, but we’ve had some

thunderstorms to break the heat wave. Incidentally, the crops have suffered quite a bit from the storms. I suppose Grace hasn’t managed all her hay yet?
I like the thought if your doing as you’re told. I must ask your Mother how she manages it!
You shouldn’t tempt me with stories of your cooking. It’s not fair on a poor husband who’s 250 miles away from your handiwork. It seems an awful waste to make things for your Mother & Grace & the Italians, when there’s a much more appreciative receptacle up here.
I’m glad to hear about the pullover. It almost makes me wish it were cold, so that I could

wear it. I’m going to collect socks & a shirt together this week & send them to you, I’ll also send one towel.
I rather fancy that I haven’t been winding your watch up enough, as I’ve been afraid of overdoing it, & so it has run down before I expected. Owing to this fact I can’t yet say definitely that it’s all right.
I haven’t heard from Mother since she’s been back in Farnworth, but I’ve no doubt the house was O.K. She was very glad we went there last week.
Three weeks today we shall be on our 48. I wish it were today, because I’m longing to see you.
Love,
Harold.

11.35 p.m.,
Dearest,
I’ve just got all the aircraft off, & I thought I’d write to you so that you would get a letter on Monday.
I’ve come across a bit in a book that I can’t resist quoting to you. A chap in Africa sees a white girl & says to himself “This woman comes from the Welsh Marches, somewhere between Ludlow & Ask, where the women have pale skins of an incredible delicacy, & straight eyebrows & serious dark eyes, & a sort of woodland magic of their own.” Don’t you think it’s silly? But it made me laugh, & I thought you might find it amusing.
4.0 p.m. Sat.
I stopped at this point,
[page break]

as the night became too hectic to concentrate on writing. I had 10 a/c u/s during the night, changed the runway, & had a Halifax down, as I had my hands full.
It’s very good to be able to work while it’s cool now, but sleep is impossible after about 1.30 p.m as these wooden huts, with inadequate ventilation, are like ovens. I intended going to see Miss Westwood after tea, but since it’s so hot [deleted] sil [/deleted] it seems silly to go out in my thick uniform.
I got a letter from a college friend of mine yesterday. His home is at Ingleton, near Carnforth, & I rang him up, but he wasn’t home on leave.
[page break]
3
He sent me the enclosed book, presumably because we knew both the author & the subject of the book when we were at Oxford. I’m sending it to you because I’ve read it & want to park it.
Otherwise, I don’t think there’s anything more to say except that I wish I were with you, darling.
All my love,
Harold.

TELEPHONE GRANGE 390.

Midnight.
Dearest,
I’m Oi/c tonight, so am using a quiet period to write this overdue letter. I shouldn’t have done this until the week after next, but the C.F.I. thinks that the P/O who’s been doing it this week is too inexperienced.
I was going to write to you last night, but I fell by the wayside. Yesterday morning I cycled out to Esthwaite, a very nice ride of about 15 miles & set off back at 8.0 p.m.
After I was more than halfway back, I met Stockdale & Sinclair, who dragged me back with them to the Swan at Newby Bridge, & then to the King’s Arms at Cartmel. – Quite a pub crawl, in fact. To crown it all, we went to Engel’s house in
[page break]
2
Cartmel for supper, and reached camp at midnight. By that time I’d cycled about 35 miles, & was feeling worn out, although I think it did me good.
This morning I went to Bobbington, near Wolverhampton. There was broken cloud at 1000 ft when we started, but over the sea (from Lytham to Rhyl) we were down to 300 ft, & trying to give ships a wide berth in case they were flying balloons – Quite a dice, I can tell you. At Rhyl I climbed up through the cloud, 5 or 600 ft thick, intending to turn back because of the Welsh Hills, but S. of Liverpool it was O.K., and we had a very good journey back in the afternoon.
Your letter gave me a thrill today. I’m delighted to think we’ve actually got some
[page break]
3
chairs, let alone a saucepan! What shakes me about your life at the moment is the straits you are put to to get into Aber. The sooner you live in a civilised place, the better, I think. It’s not too bad in this sort of weather, but it would be hopeless in winter.
The watch I’m not quite sure about yet. Twice it has lost time, once 5 minutes & once 1/2 hr., so I’m giving it a thorough check before I consider sending it to you. Perhaps by then it will be time for our 48, if the days will only pass quickly enough!
I’ll try & fix the petrol for you, but my biggest trouble will be finding a bottle, I expect.
I’ve got the perspex ring,
[page break]
and will finish it when I can.
[deleted] I’m [/deleted] Mother sent me the letter from Kingston, but there was no hurry, so I’m enclosing it with this.
I take a poor view of this way of spending a night. When I think that I could be with you instead of being stuck in this office until about 6.0 a.m., it’s enough to make one weep.
Still, perhaps the more I do this, the sooner I shall be able to be with you permanently, because that’s what I want. It’s pretty dim being away from you darling.
All my love,
Harold.
PS. Dad apologised for not having had enough time to write to you!

Dearest,
I got your watch back on Saturday (5/-) & it has kept perfect time since then. What annoyed me was the fact that the instrument basher had been on night flying, not on leave, so that I could have given it to you on Thursday had I known. He said that he had taken the whole thing to pieces & got rid of the old oil that had been clogging it up; it’s certainly going very well now.
It seems to me rather a pity that you should have to wait a month for it. If I can find a suitable box &
[page break]

packing, I’m going to send it on to you, but I promise I won’t send it unless I’ve made trebly sure that no harm will come to it.
Now the Group invasion is over, the C.O. is on leave, collecting his A.F.C. from the King. Incidentally, the main criticism last week was that we hadn’t got lightning conductors on some of our buildings!
Yesterday I flew over the Forestry camp that Farnworth Grammar School is running. I didn’t beat them up, but let them know I was there, & it was amusing to see the boys waving their handkerchiefs to me. If the weather is good on Wednesday, I’ll cycle out
[page break]

there & see the staff. Tomorrow night I think I’ll pay Miss Westwood a visit, as it’s a fortnight since I’ve been there.
I’m night flying tonight, but I don’t know whether it will clear up in time. It all depends on when a front passes over.
Incidentally, did you find the perspex ring? If you didn’t, it doesn’t matter, but if you send it back, I’ll try & finish it off for you.
What about the news from Italy? Looks hopeful, doesn’t it? Or do you think it will stiffen Italian resistance.
Personally, I suspect that every one of them really knows that
[page break]

he's beaten, & not Badoglio nor the King of Italy will be able to pull them together.
Anyway, we shall see.
All my love,
Harold.
P.S. I’ve asked Alice to call about your bike.

Dearest,
I hope you are feeling no ill-effects from our somewhat hectic 24 hours together. I’ve had a headache all day, but fortunately haven’t had to fly (too hazy), & shall go to bed for an hour after tea, as I am night flying tonight, weather permitting.
I had a comfortable journey back – a long conversation with a soldier between Bolton & Lancaster; then half an hour’s wait, when I managed to scrounge some tea & a sandwich although the refreshment room was closed. The train was late at Lancaster,

& I didn’t reach camp until 12.30 a.m. My bike had disappeared from the Mess, & I had to walk to the billet. The bike [deleted] [indecipherable letter] [/deleted] reappeared at lunch time.
The instrument basher is on night flying this week, so I’ll get the watch when he comes on duty tonight.
I expect to see you on 23rd of August darling, so I’m looking forward to that time.
All my love,
Harold.

Dearest,
Your letter arrived yesterday morning, and was very welcome. To receive a letter from you is a real tonic. Almost without knowing it, I divide the week up into days when I may expect a letter from you & those on which a letter is unlikely. Sunday is the worst of the week, because there’s no possibility of a letter then.
I don’t quite know when your parcel of chocolate will arrive, as it wasn’t collected until this morning, although I put it out for the post yesterday morning. With any luck you’ll get it on Tuesday.
I was flying last night
[page break]

in wizard weather – full moon & clear sky, but did only one detail as my second pupil did not turn up. (He’d had a headache & had taken Aspros before having a rest; as a result he woke up at 6.0 a.m.)
This afternoon I took three Home Guards up with me, & surprised myself by trying a bit of real low flying – tree top level & that sort of stuff. I’ve never done it before; I suppose I must just have been feeling that way.
I’m rather surprised that Grace wouldn’t consider the Hillman Minx. The peace time price for one used to be about £185, so I should have thought £200 would be about market price now. Of course, I don’t know if she’d be able to get
[page break]

a calf through those narrow doors.
I think you are quite right about moving into the house before you start the job. That means, really, that the house is more important. As soon as Mother returns home I think I’ll spend a day off in Bolton & see what I can do.
I was going to post this letter first thing tomorrow morning, but I’ll keep it open & get the railway vouchers. I’ve also got to see the Accountant Officer & fill up a form about my allowances, so if I remember one I’ll remember the other.
[page break]
4
I’ll certainly get the extra wool from Mother; she’s due in Farnworth on the 28th, so you’ll get it in August.
I’ll sort out the socks & shirt when I do my laundry on Monday night.
I’ll keep the watch when it’s ready, but the instrument basher went on leave on Friday & owing to my being asleep all morning, I wasn’t able to get hold of him. It will be next week before I shall get it, as he has locked it up in his box.
All my love, darling,
Harold

Dearest,
I hope you got the two letters I sent you at the beginning of the week. I seemed to spend a lot of time writing to you, all of a sudden, and now it seems ages since I last wrote.
I suppose the weather you’ve been having has been as bad as it’s been here. We had strong winds at the beginning of the week, & the last two days have been really wet; I should think we’ve had several inches in the past 24 hours.
I went to the Moodie’s on Tuesday. Their digs seem good – well furnished, plenty of light & sun & almost next
[page break]

next door to the railway station & bus stop. The landlady was a nuisance at first, but now, it seems, she can’t do too much for them.
They entertained me quite well, both with food and drink. Their sideboard is like a young pub, with whisky, gin, sherry & beer, but I contented myself with one glass of sherry. I don’t know whether it was my fault, but practically the whole of the conversation turned on various drinking parties at Shawbury, & after the first fifteen had been described, I kind of lost interest in the [deleted] st [/deleted] rest. Still, it was quite a pleasant change.
I’ve also had an invitation to spend an evening at Mrs Boddy’s, as she thought
[page break]
3
I should be feeling your absence rather badly. I am; & I accepted, but I’m night flying tonight, & tomorrow is my day off, so I don’t know when I shall go.
We had a bit of a flap this afternoon. I’d scrounged two aeroplanes, & I sent pupil A up in one, taking pupil B in the other, & arranged to give A some dual when I’d finished with B.
The circuit was crowded when I landed at 3.0 p.m., so I wasn’t surprised to see A doing an overshoot. By 3.30, when most planes had landed, I began to wonder, & by four
[page break]

o'clock, everyone was in a flap. We decided that he must have lost his nerve & wasn’t able to get down, so I jumped into the first plane I saw, intending to formate on him & so lead him down. I managed to catch up with him as he was approaching to land, & to my surprise he calmly went down & did a good landing.
When I got down myself, I was flabbergasted to learn that he’d [deleted] b [/deleted] kept going round again (for two hours, mark you!) because he hadn’t had a green from the A.C.P., & that wasn’t necessary. The only thing the A.C.P. does is to give a red if he wants you to go round again. I was so
[page break]
5
shaken by his clottishness that I wasn’t even able to tear him off a proper strip.
I discovered, after I’d sent the letter to Dad, that I’d forgotten to enclose the 10/- note. I’ll do it next time.
No jobs in the Telegraph as yet.
I’ve become very abstemious lately.. Last night, while I was sitting in the mess, a sort of streak of obstinacy made [deleted] be [/deleted] me refuse to have a drink with Riches & Facey & others. I shouldn’t have minded one drink, but I couldn’t have let it rest at that, & I didn’t fancy paying for a round
[page break]
6
of short drinks, so that I could have one. It was just as well I kept out of it, because after I’d gone, it became a real orgy, finishing up with a hose pipe playing in the Mess, and Riches being stripped practically completely.
I draw the line at that sort of thing myself.
How I wish I could see you, darling. Life seems very empty without you.
All my love,
Harold

Dearest,
I was delighted to get a letter from you this morning, so as there’s nothing doing today on account of the high wind – I spent the morning in the Mess, - I’ve come to my room to get some letters written. This evening I’m spending with Moody & his wife, so I shall be able to see what sort of a place they’ve got.
Before I forget, here’s the only advertisement in the Telegraph that seems worth considering: A firm wants someone, preferably young, to interview housewives about their needs – some sort of commercial travelling, I suppose. Must be prepared to
[page break]
2
to live in the N. of England, & be free to travel. Write, giving salary required etc., to:
A.W. 7830
Daily Telegraph, EC4
If you think it’s worth trying, bung in for it, you can always put the salary high enough.
I saw the instrument basher this morning, & he thinks he’ll have the watch ready for Friday.
I don’t think you need worry about the Hospital job, but the Y.W. seems very hopeful. I imagine they have a woman going round to give interviews & you’ll have to wait until she reaches the Cardiff district before she’ll be able to see you, so the delay is quite understandable
[page break]
3.
Which district will you ask for if they offer you a job?
As for Hereford, carry on if you find it O.K., but I shouldn’t do any more moving than can be helped i.e., if you go there, decide to settle permanently.
You seem quite satisfied with the bank balance & income tax; personally I’d sooner have the furniture than the money. The income tax is a complete mystery, but McMaster has received a similar quite incomprehensible form, so it’s possible there’s method in their madness!
By the way, I forgot
[page break]
4
to mention that I got my pants from the laundry, but my towel has disappeared from the Mess; fortunately it was just about worn out, but I’m taking no risks with my other towels.
I’m glad to hear you’re making good progress with the pullover. Judging by the sort of weather we’re having in July, I’m going to need it a lot sooner than I expected.
I’ve had a letter from Dad in Buxton. To judge by his remarks – only two leather [inserted] easy [/inserted] chairs & a number of padded forms to sit on, he isn’t having much comfort there, but he doesn’t complain.
Mother was delighted with the 10/-. I’ll enclose the
[page break]
5
letter so that you can read what it says. I’ll send Dad the other 10/-. He may find it useful.
You may find it dull at Newhouse, but I miss you more than ever. You see, the longer I’m married to you, the more I appreciate you & love you, & the harder it is to be parted. Roll on my next 48!
All my love,
Harold.
P.S. I trust you find the enclosed poem amusing. Perhaps you could send it back in a later letter.
[page break]
[underlined] Nacht Rappen [/underlined]
Swiftly, swiftly, goes the flarepath,
As we enter murky space,
Please, dear pupil, stay on zero,
And ignore my ashen face.
Hold that wing up, watch your airspeed,
Now a gentle turn, rate one.
What the …! How the …! Cripes! we've lost it.
Where’s that flaming flarepath gone?
Now we’re climbing, now we’re diving,
Now the gyro’s spinning free,
Now that old horizon’s [deleted] spinning [/deleted] [inserted] heaving [/inserted],
Soon we’re going to hit a tree.
There at last a friendly beacon,
Quick, before it’s lost to sight,
Flash a signal, get no answer,
Send the letter of the night.
Swiftly, swiftly, comes the flarepath,
Writhing like a tortured snake,
Like a drunken crab we’ve landed,
Wheels retracted, what a break!
[page break]
[underlined] Instructor’s Psalm [/underlined].
My pupil is a headache
I do not want.
He maketh me to lie down at night very weary.
He leadeth [deleted] be [/deleted] [inserted] me [/inserted] beside high tension wires.
Yea, though I walk on the clearest of days
I fear much evil
For he is with me.

I’ve finally completed my unpacking this evening. A bit late, no doubt, but it mainly concerned the odds & ends; I’d taken the spoilable stuff out earlier. I’d waited until Percy returned from his course – the other fellow who was here has moved to another room – before wanting to appropriate drawers to myself.
While I was unpacking I realised afresh how marvellously
[page break]

you look after me – everything in apple pie order when I come back from leave. Of course I like this immensely, but I appreciate even more the reason why you do it, & I only wish I could do more to show you how much I do appreciate it.
I gave your watch to a corporal this afternoon. I’ll find out how he’s got on in a day or two, & if he makes no progress I’ll take it back to the shop. If it’s humanly possible, I’ll get that watch going again for you.
I’ve discovered the Smith’s Library List in my case, so will send it with this letter.
We are now doing O i/c night flying for a week at a

time, A & B flight alternately. I think it should have been my turn this week, but I passed it on to Facey – under the excuse that he’d better get it done before he goes on leave. I had the impression that he hadn’t done his fair share of night flying in the past, so thought he’d better have a spell of it now. Anyway, every time I postpone it for myself, it means one less chance of doing it before the war is over. When he calmly [deleted] considered [/deleted] came up to me last night & said he couldn’t do it as he’d too many dates next week, I refused to consider a swap, but the laugh will probably be on me tomorrow,
[page break]
4
because Riches tells me that Facey isn’t feeling too good & will probably go sick tomorrow. Then I shall have to do it.
Sickness seems prevalent at the moment; Wyver went into sick quarters this afternoon, & Riches tells me he’s got a temperature, but personally, I feel very fit indeed.
After I’d finished my letter in Grange yesterday afternoon, I’d just missed the 5.18 bus, so went to see Miss Westwood to wait until 7.8. She was very kind, told me to come any time I liked, whether she was in or not (if the door was open), and allowed me to play her piano – an awful noise I made, I’m afraid.
[page break]
Monday 9.45 p.m.
I’m due to go night flying at half past eleven, as mine are the only two pupils ready in B Flt., so I said I’d take them. It looks very doubtful whether we shall fly, however, as there’s a terrific wind blowing, and we’ve had it unless it drops.
Thank you for the parcel, darling It arrived this afternoon, just another example of the care I was talking about at the beginning of the letter.
I got your letter this morning, too, so I’ve had a good day today.
It looks to me as though you are going to have your hands full with the Italians! Have you any Sicilians among them,
[page break]
6
and what have they said about the invasion? Where are you having the extra wash basin?
I’m glad Dad had the sense to send your coat. I’ll write to thank him when I get his address.
As for Bub & Elizabeth, I can think of two children that are going to surpass them in the future!
As usual, you decry your efforts in the preserving line. I’m prepared to bet that you do it better than anyone else, whether you’ve had any experience or not.
A furnished flat doesn’t sound so good as a house, but I should think it would be worth trying. Hereford would be better than Leominster,
7
but if it suits you, have a crack at it. [circled It] [inserted] A flat [/inserted] ought to be a suitable place in which we can organise some furniture of our own. I’ll certainly send Mrs Hudson’s letter along.
You say it seems ages since we were together. I discovered with a shock today that it’s not quite a week since we left Farnworth. It seems unbelievable to me.
At the moment I am thinking of organising a 48 for about the 15th of August, just over a month from now, as that ought to be about half way between leaves. If I can you at any time

by coming down, - say, when you set up in your new place, let me know, & I’ll try to fix it.
Your note with the parcel suggests that I try & find a place in Bolton. I’ll write to Arthur Rigby & ask him to keep a look-out for us.
The invasion in Sicily seems to be going well, doesn’t it? I’m delighted, because I hope it means the war will be over soon & we can be together again – for good.
All my love, darling,
Harold.

Dearest,
Your letter was very welcome indeed, this morning. It seems ages since I left you in Manchester.
I’m glad you got back safely, but very sorry to hear about the car. Grace had a narrow escape – I always say nowadays, that I feel safer in a plane than in a car - & she’s lucky to have got off so lightly.
I’m sending you this month’s statement from the bank, together with my income tax assessment. It all seems a lot of rot to me, - the assessment, I mean, - but the results seem

so favourable that I’m inclined to let it go. Let me know what you think about it.
I haven’t been able to go into Grange about your watch yet, as I’ve been flying until 5.0 or later, & haven’t been able to get in in time.
I’ll write to Mother tomorrow & explain about the bike & send her 10/- for the electricity.
Moodie told me how sorry his wife was that you weren’t coming back, & Bod said the same. I met Mrs. Boddy tonight at the flicks in Grange & she asked how you were going on & what you were doing. She was a bit

envious of the good weather we had, because she’s had friends here this week, & the weather hasn’t been fit for going down to the beach.
[underlined] Saturday 2pm [/underlined] After the flicks we missed the bus & walked to the station. As soon as we reached the ornamental gardens the train steamed in, and we ran like mad, just managing to catch it. I nearly collapsed when I got in the train!
The weather is bad today – I went to Blackpool this morning, to pick up Percy, who’d been on a course, and just managed to get back before it clamped properly. If there is no improvement, I’ll catch the 3.57 in to Grange and see about your watch. I’ll leave this open until I’ve been.
I don’t know if it’s worth your while to send that book on. I’d
[page break]

like to read it, but I’d sooner you had a book always handy, so it will be quite all right if you change it as soon as you’ve read it.
By the way, that gen I gave you about the C.O. was duff – it was merely a rumour.
I’m writing this in the flight, so you’ll have to excuse the last part.
All my love, darling,
Harold.
[underlined] Grange 4.50 p.m. [/underlined]
The watch will cost 18/6 & will take 8 – 10 weeks. I’ve brought it away with me & I’ll see if I can get it done on the aerodrome. If not, I’ll take it back.
Saw Jacob last night, walking home with his wife! He’s living out now. Jolly good thing, isn’t it, when you consider that they were separated two years ago.

Dearest,
It’s 9.45, & I can now consider myself more or less settled in. I’m still conscious of a feeling that only half of me is here; the other half, trust, is safely at Newhouse. As time goes on, I shall begin to accept as normal the fact that I am only half alive, & shall only notice the change when I become whole again, that is, next time I go on leave. I’m not putting it very well, I’m afraid, but I expect you know what I mean.
I hope you had a

pleasant journey, & that Grace was there to meet you. What we should do without her, I can’t imagine.
My day wasn’t too good. I started by combing the shops for a box of matches (after sending a p.c. to Dad), & was successful at, I think, my 7th attempt.
I spent a long time over my coffee, & then went to the library till 12.0 o’clock. I read “Postmarked Berlin” while I was there. It’s Harry W. Flannery & William Shirer all over again, but not so well done. Much duller, & more prosily written.
After a quick lunch at the Odeon, I went to the Gaumont to see a murder story

which was average, & an Abbot & Costello film which was rather better. I wasn’t very much in the mood for it, however, & was glad to go out & catch my train, arriving here without incident.
At the moment I am in Percy’s room, as he is on a course – accommodation is pretty tight here, & it’s just as well I sent that card.
That’s all for the moment except that I’ve been told the C.O. is to be posted. It will be just like getting a new Head at school, & wondering what changes the new one will introduce.
All my love, Harold. Pto
