I HAVE JUST BEEN DOWN HERE WHERE ALL THE FLOWERS ARE OUT. DADDY HAS ALSO PICKED TWO ORANGES OFF THE TREE FOR YOU AND WILL BRING THEM HOME NEXT MONTH THE ROSES ARE OUT TOO AND IT IS QUITE HOT.
LOVE
DADDY.
[inserted] Those oranges were Seville (marmalade oranges) & far too sour to eat. Such a disappointment since oranges were still something of a rarity [/inserted]

This comes to you from Spain, to show you the oxen they use for ploughing instead of horses. You see them in all the fields and ploughing the vineyards where they grow the grapes to make wine.

We have finished with Bordeaux & are off for Marseille, some 450 miles, early tomorrow. This will probably be posted at Toulouse en route tomorrow. Been a bit wet here today. Had lunch with the Elvington crowd, now at Merignac, the aerodrome here. They were considerably shaken to find I’d got to France before them & gave us hell of a time. However, shall not be at all sorry to get back to Marseille & some hot water – seems to be none in France, no fuel. No time to visit Spain on return trip. Photo is Vernet les Bain in Pyrenees
Love,
Hubby.

Very hot morning, not a breath of wind. After lunch a good stiff breeze had sprung up, so managed to take out a 12 ft. Sharpie. I took her a couple of miles out & right across the bay. Sluggish after Lima, & they always had a reputation as wet boats. They are! Came back thoroughly wet! Much cooler with the wind.

LA COTE D’AZUR
4. CANNES – Les Jardins et le Suquet
Left Paris 2120 last night, reached Marseille 1105, 25 m. late, & got down here 1525, 1/4 hour late. Felt very hot, tired, unshaved, hungry & dirty after over 18 hrs. behind French coal dust. However, following bath & shave, feel better but dont [sic] think I’ll go out tonight! The weather here is sure hot, but looks as if clouding up for thunderstorm out to sea S.E. Poppies are out all along the line from Arles onwards, also purple flags growing wild. Peach blossom all over, but lots more out, also geraniums & roses, & first hay crop ready for cutting. They get 3 lots! Swallows have arrived here.
Love,
Hubby.

I wanted you to see this place, originally a Phoenician fortress, guarding trade route, it stands about 2000 ft. sheer above the Mediterranean at the highest point between Nice & Monte Carlo. Nice rather reminds one of Blackpool! A sufficient deterrent!

Have taken a 23 ft. Stm out back of islands with Diana but January. This [indecipherable word] t [sic] letter today.

Am just finishing off packing & been in hectic rush all day. No time for letter. Got yrs. of 18th today. Am leaving Marseille 1700 hrs. & get to Paris 0820 tomorrow morning, so address letters to 87 Group, RAF, B.A.O.R. France same as before. We got boat ready yesterday, & as we stepped mast, it snapped like a carrot, so could only go out in a dish bottomed abortion. Marvellously hot here today, roses out & everything. Broad beans in bloom, & all the peach orchards, masses of [indecipherable word]

Been up here today. The village is perched on top of an almost sheer drop of about 2000 ft. Unfortunately cloud came up just after we got there, so only got a few glimpses of the Gorge du Loup below. One of party turns out t [sic] have been one of Courtauld’s technical experts! Much better today inside – had hell of a day yesterday. Took the coast road down, called in at St. Raphael, & hear Blondie has produced a son, not due till April. Leaving for Paris 1700 hrs. Monday. No letter from you all this week since Monday.
Love,
Hubby.

Got to Cannes at 0500 hrs. Sat, after Hotchkiss had completely broken down 12 Km. E. of Toulon. Broke down at 1700 hrs., but we were not rescued till 0200 next day! Slept 3 hrs. in car. Sat. foul, pouring rain for 18 hrs. on end, and in Cannes! So no sailing, & we got wet on inside instead! Today fine, but Dinah had to work, so 3 of us went off to Nice, La Tuchie & Monte Carlo, where we all got into Casino & were taken round the gambling tables! But did not play. Got back 3 1/4 hrs. – puncture only 1310 out. Too tired to send R.H. a p.c. tonight, past midnight, tell her why. Driven 160 miles today. Love, Hubby.

Writing this today so as you wont get so big a gap, it will go out tomorrow morning. No particular news of anything today so far. Tomorrow fortnight should be home, if weather in U.K. fit.

[underlined] 20th Jan. [/underlined] Came along this road on way down. Did’nt [sic] write yesterday as no post out till tomorrow morning, Mon., when shall be on way back. Dirty weather yesterday, but lovely today with light breeze, & just had best sail I’ve ever had down here in a real boat! 22 ft. with a 30 ft. mast, & she could move. We went right out beyond the islands off coast here, where we found a wind. Weather will break again tomorrow if I know it. Been having fresh news – may not shut shop after all. Writing more fully tomorrow.

Got here in the lemon Friday, p.m. Went to Grasse perfume factories yesterday morning – have got Babs a bottle, & a barrel for Winkle when you have used contents. This is distant view of Cannes as you see it from the coast road along the Corniche d’Or around foot of the Esterel. Today is as hot as early June chez nous, & I’ve shed all my winter garments! Am just starting for Nice & Monte Carlo with American party. Have been recalled, & got to go back tomorrow.

We got through Toulouse quicker than expected & came on to Bordeaux, 180 Kms in 3 hrs. 50 m, this afternoon. Toulouse was lousy – no hot water, & this morning the light failed at 0800, also the water supply. No hot water even to shave. The best hotel in place was dirty & like an ice house. This one at Bordeaux has central heating on. We expect to be here tomorrow night, & hope to poke our noses into Spain on way back if we can dodge snow, which was very high on the lemon. She wont climb in snow & gets uncontrolable. [sic]
Love, Hubby.

We got here yesterday, some 280 miles in under 7 hours running time. This afternoon ran over to this place, Vernet les Bains, & the photo gives you a good idea of this country side. [sic] I’ve been up to 6000 ft twice today, first time in an open jeep, with borrowed flying clothing. Second time in our Citroen, closed and warm. There is snow on the tops – the little fellow at the back is Canigou, 9000 ft. On to Toulouse tomorrow.
Love,
[underlined] Hubby [/underlined]

Got here today after lovely run along coast road. Visited St. Tropez on way but did not look to see if Benedictus had got back yet. There are some marvellous little spots along the coast here. This place I should imagine is rather like Brighton or Blackpool in peacetime, though all right now.
Love,
Hubby.
Writing when I get back Monday.
