Warrant Officer Harold Kirby 1637087 was born in Kilbourne, Loncon in 1923, his job after leaving school was in the accounting department at London Electric Supplies. He initially tried to volunteer for the RAF but failed the medical, at that time. He was subsequently drafted in 1942. Skill training started with training as a Flight Mechanic, but during this was asked to volunteer to rain as a Flight Engineer. His first posting was as an Aircraft Fitter at No.460 Squadron, RAF Binbrook, although only for 6 months.
After Flight Engineer training at St Athan and then training on the Short Stirling and then the Lancaster with 1661 Heavy Conversion Unit at RAF Winthorpe, the first solo flight for the crew, the port landing gear would not lock, during the landing the gear collapsed, although there were no injuries.
First operational unit was No.467 Squadron at RAF Waddington a mainly Australian Squadron, the crew were here for July and August 1944, One operation 3/4th August 1944, to the V1 storage site at Trossy Saint Maximin had another bomber flying above their aircraft and dropping their bombs, one going through the wing, narrowly missing vital structures, this resulted in a gear up landing, due to hydraulic loss, but again there were no injuries resulting.
He was then posted along with the crew to No 97 Squadron, based at RAF Coningsby a pathfinder squadron, tasked to mark the targets for other aircraft,
In total two tours were completed before the end of the European war, after finishing as a Flight Engineer, Harold trained as a RADAR mechanic, before leaving the RAF.

Called up August 12th 1942. Initial training at Skegness August – September 1942.
Posted to Halton to train as Flight Mechanic (airframes) the first intake of conscripts to do this training there. Passed out sufficiently highly to go on to take Fitter course.
During the period at Halton volunteered to train as Flight Engineer. Called to take aptitude tests and medical, and was accepted. (Early in 1942 I had tried to get in as Navigator with two school friends, but was turned down on medical grounds. They were both accepted and were later shot down, so perhaps I was lucky). While waiting for the F/E course was posted to 460 Squadron. Arrived at Breighton to find that they had moved to Binbrook about two weeks earlier. Billeted at Breighton overnight, and transported to Binbrook the following day, where I worked for about six months servicing and repairing Lancasters. [inserted] June ? Nov 43 [/inserted]
Eventually instructed to report to A.C.R.C, St Johns Wood, to be kitted out as aircrew and then posted to St. Athan for F/E course. After passing out was posted to 1661 H.C.U. at Winthorpe, where I joined an otherwise all Australian crew captained by (then) P.O. Bill Ryan, with Les Sabine (Navigator), Jim McPhie (Bomb Aimer) Johnny Nichols (W/O) Bert Newing (Rear Gunner) and Norm Johnston (Mid-Upper). At Winthorpe training was on Stirlings, and after initial flights with an instructor we took off on our first solo. However the port undercarriage leg would not lower, and had to be wound down by hand, but would not lock. Instructed to fly to Woodbridge where on landing the port U/C collapsed and we spun round. No-one was hurt and we flew back to base in another aircraft that the pilot-instructor had followed us down in. No further panics and we were posted to 467 Squadron at Waddington via 5LFS Syerston.
On our first operation Bert shouted “corkscrew”, shots were fired, and a twin-engined aircraft (not identified) shot past our nose and vanished into the night. During the shooting a bullet passed through the rear turret making a hole through Bert’s flying suit, but it was not clear whether this came from the unidentified aircraft or another of our own shooting at it. In any case I began to think that there could be better ways of spending one’s time.
However things went a little smoother after that until our 11th Op which was a “daylight” to Troissy. Flying at the briefed height bombs started falling around us and one went through the port wing taking away the undercarriage. It was not possible to see the full extent of the damage and I was asked to feather the port inner engine, just in front of the hole that the bomb had made, in case of fire. We were soon left behind by the rest of the force and were all alone in the sky until the rear gunner announced that two single-engined aircraft were approching [sic] from the starboard quarter,. After what seemed to be an age he said “it’s all right, they’re Spitfires” and one of them escorted us to the coast. A close watch was kept on the port wing which seemed (imagination?) to be flexing more than the other, and it was decided to land at Wittering, which had, at the time, a grass runway, rather than going on to base. As the landing gear and flaps were out of action due to the loss

of hydraulic fluid we did a belly landing. Again no-one was hurt but the Skipper had a strip torn off him by Flying Control for spoiling their runway. When we saw the hole that had been made by the bomb it was found that it had missed both the front and rear spars only by inches.
After our 16th operation we were posted to 97 (Pathfinder) Squadron, then based with 83 Squadron at Coningsby, where we completed our first tour of 30 operations with a 10 hour trip to Politz in Poland. We went on to do a second tour, a shorter one of 15, and all but completed this with our 44th on the 25th April 1945.
The crew then split up and as I was no longer required for aircrew duties I chose a Radar Mechanics Course at Yatesbury, Wiltshire. After completing the course I was posted to West Ruislip, where I was able to live at home in Kingsbury and travel to Ruislip each day by tube, prior to being demobbed in November 1946.
Wanting to do something more technical than my earlier civilian job I joined the G.E.C. and trained as a Patent Agent at the Reseach [sic] Laboratories in North Wembley. Qualified in 1955 and retired in 1988, though still working one or two days a week. The rest of the time taken up by gardening, badminton, tennis or taking it easy.

Working up to a flight engineer but failing as he started working at RAF Halton training as a flight mechanic, then attending a fitter course. Volunteered for the flight engineer course at RAF Binbrook for six months servicing Lancasters, then Aircrew Receiving Centre St John's Wood for flight engineer course. After that at 1661 Heavy Conversion Unit at RAF Winthorpe with the 467 Squadron, to serve with an all Australian aircrew for the rest of the war. After demobilisation he joined the GEC as a Patient Agent at the Research Laboratories in North Wembley until he retired in 1988.

Sergeant W. Dixon’s RAF Navigator’s, Air Bomber’s and Air Gunner’s Flying Log Book, from 23rd September 1943 to 4th April 1945, detailing his training and operations as a Wireless Operator/Air Gunner. He was stationed at RAF Yatesbury (No. 2 Radio School), RAF Evanton (8 Air Gunnery School), RAF Bishopscourt (7(O) AFU), RAF Turweston, RAF Silverstone, (17 OTU), RAF Wigsley (1654 HCU), RAF Syerston (5 LFS) and RAF Skellingthorpe (61 Squadron). Aircraft in which flown: Dominie, Proctor, Anson, Wellington, Stirling and Lancaster.
He flew a total of 32 operations (6 day, 26 night). Targets in Belgium, Germany, Netherlands, Norway and Poland were: Bohlen, Bremen, Brunswick, Dortmund, Dresden, Duren, Dusseldorf, Flushing, Gdynia, Gravenhorst, Houffalize, Ladbergen, Lutzkendorf, Merseburg, Molbis, Munich, Nordhausen, Nurnberg, Politz, Rheydt, Rositz, Siegen, Trondheim and Wurzburg. His pilots on operations were Flight Lieutenant Burns, Flying Officer MacFarlane and Flying Officer Lambert. Includes numerous comments on operations, including “COULDN’T CLIMB OVER ALPS OPENED BOMB DOORS & TOBBOGANED (sic) OVER” and “ATTACKED BY 5 JU88’S 2 SHOT DOWN”.

Ten items. Sergeant William Warburton (1911 -1944, 1067053 Royal Air Force) flew operations as a flight engineer with 61 Squadron. He and his crew failed to return from operation in january 1944. Collection contains a scarpbook with contributions from most of the crew, letters to his father, letter to A Brander's father as well as Brander's logbook, research on his aircraft loss and locating relatives of the crew by M Warburton (nephew) and extracts from B Clak's diaries for December 1943.<br /><br />The collection has been donated to the IBCC Digital Archive by Michael Warburton and catalogued by Nigel Huckins.<br />Additional information on William Warburton is available via the <a href="https://losses.internationalbcc.co.uk/loss/124345/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">IBCC Losses Database</a>

Sergeant A P Brander’s RAF Observer’s and Air Gunner’s Flying Log Book, from 17th August 1942 to 27th January 1944, detailing his training and operations as an air gunner. He did not record the names of some of the bases he flew from, but it is thought he was stationed at RAF Little Horwood and RAF Wing (26 OTU), RAF Skellingthorpe (1485 (Bomber) Gunnery Flight and 61 Squadron), RAF Swinderby (1660 Conversion Unit), and RAF Coningsby (61 Squadron). Aircraft in which flown: Wellington, Halifax and Lancaster. He completed seven night operations. One other is noted as “Boomerang”. The final entry is “OPS BERLIN MISSING”. Targets in Germany were: Berlin, Brunswick, Magdeburg and Stettin. His pilot on operations was Flying Officer West.

An oral history interview with Chief Technician David Kennedy Hicks (b. 1922, 0574954 Royal Air force), memories of the Battle of Britain, his Royal Air Force record, and photographs of his Halton entry, his time in Southern Rhodesia and 56 photographs, many of his time in Southern Africa. Ken Hicks joined the Royal Air Force in 1938 as a Halton apprentice. He served with 202 Squadron at RAF Hornchurch during the Battle of Britain as an aircraft rigger. Subsequently he served on training unit in Southern Rhodesia and then in Egypt, staying in the Royal Air Force after the war.

[/underlined] Total of 418 Lancs & 9 Mosquitoes on a direct route from Ijmuiden on Dutch coast, due East to target with return north over Denmark. Fuel load normally 1750 galls. T.O.T. 2100hrs 10/10th Cloud. Wanganui marking. 25 a/c lost including two from 9 Sqn. P/O Black & crew + P/O Blayden & crew (all killed). Another 31 crashed on return due to adverse weather (low cloud & poor visibility).

Diversionary attacks made on Magdeburg & Leipzig. 9 Lancs & 9 Halifax lost (2.8% of total) & 104 damaged (most losses by fighters). (This attack was the 94th raid on Berlin since 1940). Total bombs dropped = 1099 tons HE + 1215 tons Incendiary making a total for the “Battle of Berlin” of 14074 tons and involving 3646 a/c dispatched to Δ.

Route out almost due east and back well south on Cologne via Le Tréport to English south coast. 28 Lancs lost (6.7%) inc P/O Ward of 9 Sqn for total tonnage 1400. Heavy snow fell during and after return.

Considered a most effective raid with fires & explosions seen from beyond Baltic coast.

[Underlined] 15/16th Feb(15th Raid) [/underlined] Total of 891 a/c (including 561 Lancs, 314 Halifax & 16 Mosquitoes), the largest force ever despatched to the ‘Big City’, plus 24 Lancs to Frankfurt and Mosquito attacks on 7 night fighter airfields. T/O between 5 & 6pm with return about midnight for a northerly route out over Denmark. Heavy flak experienced, particularly over enemy coast and the target. 42 a/c lost plus 4 crashed on return. 2642 tons dropped in 39 minutes.

Frankfurt – The Raid on 22/23 March ‘44
816 aircraft took part – 620 Lancasters, 184 Halifaxes and 12 Mosquitoes. An indirect routes [sic] was used crossing the Dutch coast north of the Zuider Zee and then due south to Frankfurt. This, and a minelaying diversion at Kiel, confused the Germans for quite some time. Hannover being forecast as the main target. A few fighters eventually found the Bombers.
The marking and bombing was accurate and damage being more severe than in the raid 4 nights previous. There was severe damage to the industrial areas along the main road to Mainz. All parts of the city were hit but the full force of the attack fell in the districts to the west.
33 aircraft were lost on this raid – 26 Lancasters and 7 Halifaxes. 4.0% of force lost.
Further interesting facts:-
162 B-17s of the Eighth Air Force used Frankfurt as a secondary target when they could not reach Schweinfurt 36 hours after this RAF raid, further damage was caused.
The three raids of the 18th, 22nd and 24th March were carried out by a combined plan of the British and American air forces and their combined effect was to deal the worst and most fateful blow of the war to Frankfurt.

This compares with a total of 255 raids, 20407 sorties, 45515 tons of bombs and 870 a/c missing during the entire war against Berlin 1940-45 inc.

[Underlined] 24/25th March (16th + final raid [/underlined] of the “Battle of Berlin” and the last large scale attack by BC.) This raid was delayed from 21st Mar by unsuitable weather. 811 a/c took part with 147 other from OUT’s on diversions. Weather was forecast as variable medium cloud with clear skies above and light northerly winds. In fact, winds were over 100mph from the north and this was not appreciated until late on, if at all with the result that navigation went hay-wire and aircraft were, literally, as newspaper headlines recorded the next day, but with a different meaning, “out all over Germany”. The route ran down to Berlin from the NW and the attack was planned to be concentrated between 10.25 and 10.43pm, but it started early and spread over an hour and many early aircraft (including mine) overshot the target on the first run and had to go round again, while others, even earlier, had to orbit & await the TI’s. The aircraft was then put on disposal until ATA pilot [obscured] it to deliver to the squadron. The Erks got a shock when [obscured] women collected these planes and flew them as good as any male pilot.
Then one day, we were all hauled out to put the black and white stripes on our aircraft. We were all half asleep slapping the paint on the wings and tail ends, ready for the invasion of France.
We were allowed knitting wool without coupons in air force blue – good job mum was a good knitter as she knitted me stockings to wear under the battle dress, jumpers and gloves which I could wear whilst filling the aircraft. Also a balaclava to keep my cars [sic] warm.
Aircraft in disposal were often covered in snow when ATA come to collect, which meant you used a rope one each side of the wing and tired [sic] to pull it to the win [sic] tip. It makes me shiver now to think how we coped with the winters in Scotland.
Having to fly with the aircraft you signed for and serviced. We lost 3 airmen from our site which were shot down over the North Sea. Thank god us girls all survived flying.
Leaving – Innes House
Getting back from the airfield one day we had a notice telling us we were being moved again. We gathered all our gear and

BERLIN – 24/25th March 1944
811 Aircraft – 577 Lancasters, 216 Halifaxes and 18 Mosquitoes. 72 Aircraft – 44 Lancaster and 28 Halifaxes lost. 8.9& of force.
The night became known in Bomber Command as ‘the night of the strong winds’. At every stage of the flight a powerful wind from the north carried Bombers south. This wind was not forecast accurately and it was so strong that various methods available to warn crews of wind change during the flight failed to detect the full strength of it. The Bomber stream became very scattered, particularly on the home flight and Radar-predicted Flak batteries at many places were able to score successes. Some of the Bomber force even strayed over the Ruhr defences on the return flight. Approximately 50 of the 72 aircraft lost were destroyed by Flak, most of the remainder being victims of night fighters. A Berlin report says that 14 Bombers were shot down by fighters in the target area.
The strong winds caused difficulties in the marking at Berlin with markers being carried beyond the target to the south west of the city. 126 small towns and villages outside Berlin recorded bombs. The majority of the damage in Berlin was in south western districts.
No industrial concerns were classed as destroyed but several important ones damaged. 5 military establishments were hit badly including the depot on the Waffen-SS. Leibstandarte Adolf Hitler Division in Lichterfelde.
This was the last major RAF raid on Berlin during the war, but the city was to be bombed many times by small forces of Mosquitoes.

Pilots flying log book for Ronald Mathers covering the period from 8 May 1942 to 30 September 1944. Detailing his flying training, operations flown and instructor duties. He was stationed at RAF Sywell, RAF De Winton, RAF Swift Current, RAF Harrogate, RAF Shawbury, RAF Castle Donington, RAF Turweston, RAF Silverstone, RAF Morton Hall, RAF Winthorpe, RAF Bardney, RAF Lulsgate Bottom and RAF Swinderby. Aircraft flown were, Tiger Moth (DH82), Stearman, Oxford, Anson Wellington, Lancaster and Stirling. He flew a total of 30 night operations with 9 squadron. Targets were, Berlin, Frankfurt, Braunschweig, Leipzig, Stuttgart, Marignane, Essen, Nuremburg, Schweinfurt, St, Medard en Jalles, Toulouse, Mailly le Camp, Brest, Lille, Bourg Leopold, Tours, Duisburg and Brunswick. His first or second pilots on operations were Pilot Officer Turnbull, Sergeant Ryan, Flying Officer Reeve, Flight Sergeant Redfern and Pilot Officer Campbell. The log book also contains hand written and typed printed notes of the 11 operations carried out to Berlin. Also contains four photographs of crew members, bomb aimer ‘Doc’ Brown, navigator ‘Tom Cave, wireless operator ‘Jock’ Donaldson and rear gunner ‘Nobby’ Bartlett.

Flying log book for navigators, air bombers, air gunners, flight engineers for R Gard, air gunner, covering the period from 7 March 1944 to 14 February 1945 when he went missing on operations. He was stationed at RAF Stormy Down, RAF Turweston, RAF Silverstone, RAF Winthorpe, RAF Syerston and RAF Waddington. Aircraft flown in were Anson, Wellington, Stirling and Lancaster. He flew a total of 17 operations with 463 squadron, 4 Daylight and 13 night operations. [bold] REMINISCENCES OF MRS JEAN CRAWFORD (nee Taplin) [/bold]
[bold] HOME LIFE [/bold]
The earliest I remember is a black kitchen range for cooking cakes and Sunday roasts in the oven and vegetables on the top. There was always a kettle on the hob, ready for tea. I had to walk to the village pump to fill a three pint milk can of water until 1946. We were in the council houses when they were built in 1939 (numbers 1-4). Numbers 5-8 were built in 1946/47. We used to fill a bucket full of ain water to flush the toilet. The water was not available although the taps and a cistern were there. A copper was in the corner of the kitchen to boil the washing in, heated by a wood fire underneath. Rainwater was used for bathing and washing. Electric coppers and cooker were used soon after the War in 1947/48. Bread was delivered Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. The Butcher came on Wednesday and Friday. Groceries were delivered on a Wednesday and you gave your order for the following week.
No central heating of course – as you let the kitchen fire out, we lit the living room five. Mainly wood was burned. My Dad had a cut in Charndon Wood. He would buy a section for pea sticks, bean sticks, firelighting wood (to be tied in faggots) and some thicker bits to be cut into logs. He brought this home in one of the first tractors- Standard Fordson and trailer.
In Winter we lived on rabbit stew and vegetables with dumplings. Dad shot the rabbits and sold them for two shillings and sixpence (half a crown) in the village. We always had a roast on a Sunday, cold on Monday with bubble and squeak as this was always washday. Mum made rissoles on Tuesday. We always had a fruit pie on Sunday, jam tarts for tea, suet puddings such as jam roly poly, spotted dick, or syrup dumplings. In the Summer, we lived on lettuce sandwiches – the lettuce was always out of the garden – never bought. We also had a pig in a sty which was killed once a year and stored it in the bedroom and kitchen. This made two big hams. At killing time there were chitterlings to fry. The fat to cut up and frizzled until all the fat was out which was lard. This left us with scratchings to eat cold with bread which were delicious. The liver was good also. I didn’t like pig’s head – mum used to make brawn.
Mum made all sorts of jams – plum, blackberry and apple, gooseberry, damson. Marmalade was made in January/February with Seville Oranges bought from the greengrocer. The fruits were either grown or relations gave them to you to make jam. We also picked blackberries off the hedgerows.
Another thing of course was chamber pots, always one under each bed for night use only.
At Christmas time some people had a Christmas Tree but we didn’t. My Gran and Grandad would fatter up a cockerel to about 7lbs. This was good cooked with our own vegetables. Gran used to make the pudding and boil in her kitchen copper (with the fire going underneath for 8 hours). She also kept chickens so we had eggs. She used to make rhubarb wine – which was her speciality. We children were not allowed to drink any!
When people died they were kept at home and often the coffin came out of the bedroom window and on the bier to Church. This was a trailer with four wheels and a handle and pulled along manually. The mourners walked behind, always in black.
[bold] WARTIME [/bold]
A Lockheed Hudson crashed by Gubbin’s Hole bridge in Mr Benfield’s field.
A Handley Page Hampden crashed down and all the crew got out. They thought they were in Holland and set fire to it!
I was staying with my Grandparents at Cuddington when a doodlebug switched off as it flew over and crashed at Brill. This frightened them but I was in bed asleep.

[bold] LEISURE [/bold]
As children we would walk down to Charndon Wood (where the rubbish tip is now) and would pick basketfuls of primroses and later on bluebells. The ground was covered in primroses so peaceful and safe. On the entrance bridleway to the wood gypsies would live for two weeks at a time with the horsedrawn caravans, making clothes pegs from the willow or nut trees, selling them round the village. My mother always bought some.
[bold] WORKING LIFE [/bold]
Two village pumps, one just opposite the Fox Public House and one left of the public footpath to the side of the Leach’s property. They were gravity fed pumps – the two wells were situated in Mr. Howlett’s field by Tim Benfield’s orchard.
In the Summers during the 1950’s and 1960’s the village men used to take a stick and hook and each cut a section of the churchyard and then visit the Fox Inn for light refreshment – a good time was had by all.
The brick lorries used to block the road from Calvert through Edgcott on their return from a day’s delivery of bricks at 20 m.p.h. They were not on piecework then!
After the Second World War women of the village would pick washing trays full of blackberries to sell to a manufacturer to make jam at 2 pence a lb. – going up each year. The youngsters would collect conkers, take them to a collecting point to make glue for the war effort – also rosehips for rosehip syrup and sheep wool off the barbed wire. We used to collect it in buckets, shopping bags or hessian sacks for conkers. Every lawn was dug up and vegetables grown.
Most village people that were not in the Forces were volunteered for the Home Guard. My father worked on the farm (he had a hearing defect). He was up at 5.30 to milk 40 cows by hand, (no heating). Home for breakfast at 8 a.m. – always fried egg and bacon and fried bread. He was back to work at 8.30 a.m. to clean the cowsheds down, sweeping and shovelling the much into a wheelbarrow, putting clean litter down when they stayed indoors in the winter. He swept the yard up when it was laid down to concrete in the late 1940’s. Dinner was at mid-day until 12.30 – 1p.m. depending on whether it was haymaking or harvest time. Milking again at 3.30 p.m. and back home at 5.30 to 6 p.m. depending on whether a cow was calving. In the summer it was back for haymaking and then harvest. Home then was 10 p.m. and a wash with a kettle full of hot water, no shower or bath. That was once a week job on a Friday night in front of the fire in the kitchen.
We went on holiday every other year. Mum would buy the food and make the menu out for the landlady who would cook it for us. Dad would have three pints of milk a day and more in the evening if he wanted it. It was always in a milk can.
[bold] VILLAGE PERSONALITIES [/bold]
Louis Busby lived in Rose Cottage as it is now. He was a very perky 5ft. 7ins. Dressed in a trilby hat, black trousers and dark shirt, very quick in movement and talk – a likeable man.
Old Mrs. Small, whose house was between Rose Cottage and the Post Office, had white hair which she used to put rag curlers in. A rounded lady, always pleasant. Freddy Bradburn found her dead in her cottage when delivering bread.

They were sisters – the same height – 5ft. 6ins. They were always so neat and trim and very polite and pleasant. They always wore hats and gloves.
Mr. Findlay was a shopkeeper in a little thatched shop where the brick shed is now next to Miss Mortimers. He was tall – 5ft. 11ins., slim and quick walking. He had a glass eye which always stared at you. He sold paraffin for the then much used paraffin stoves to cook on in the Summer.
Old Mrs. Butler – Peter Harper’s Great Grandmother. She was tiny – only 5ft 1in. who was very rounded and also had a glass eye. She always wore black.
Bele Hammond lived in the rectory. She was very much a spinster and always told you off for picking her apples up that had fallen over the hedge. She used to frighten me.
George Barratt lived next door to Manor Farm. He came from Norfolk – a real farm looking gentleman who was a chapel man and also liked hunting. He spoke well and was tallish.
Will Taplin – my father would say what he thought and upset people on several occasions. He used to go to see his father at Grendon Underwood and a neighbour of his told me it was like listening to two foreigners talking. They both had very broad Buckinghamshire accents. Dad used to help the Pensioners in his latter years. He was 5ft.8ins. tall, wore a cap, dark trousers and a jacket and smoked a pipe. He was also deaf but did have a hearing aid the last few years of his life. He loved playing Whist and Dominoes. If you were his partner and played the wrong card you were severely told off!! He died at 80 years.
[bold] EDUCATION [/bold]
Edgcott School closed in 1914/15.
My schooldays began in 1940/41 when my mother took me to school in a seat on her bicycle for 9 a.m. to Grendon Underwood Church of England School. I took sandwiches for my DINNER not lunch. Dinner at mid-day was eater in the playground. Playtimes were at 10.30 a.m. and 2.15 p.m. We did reading, writing and arithmetic, scripture each morning and learned our tables parrot fashion. We had sewing in the headmistress’s garden in the afternoon. 1946 saw me walking to school or maybe a bicycle. Outside toilets were emptied each Friday night. By this time we were having cooked dinners cooked in the canteen built in the playground. We also had cookery lessons in the Saye and Sele Room at Grendon Underwood.
During the war years the evacuees were billeted out to those who had room. Pat Lewis to Mr. And Mrs. Young, Manor Farm, Queenie Lewis to Mr. and Mrs. Barrett next door to Manor Farm. Ann Blue stayed with Mr. and Mrs. Stuchbury at No. 4 Lawn Hill. Betty Pollard, Freddie Bradburn with Mrs Pauline in May House. Shirley Hampton lived in Rectory Farm with her mother and Grandmother – this end nearest the Church when Mr. and Mrs. Dennis Busby lived there. They had a class of their own with their own teacher, Miss Barrett, a fiery woman.
When I was 12 and a half years old I went to Waddesdon Church of England School with all the same age, or older. These were Alan Golby and Brian Bates.
I’d ride my bicycle to Grendon Garage to travel by bus. It took some getting used to. I remember we played netball in shorts and T shirt. I left school at 15 – much to my mother’s annoyance. It was 14 but they put the school leaving age up by one year when it was my turn!

Reg Miles's memoir in three parts. Part one Reg describes his childhood in St Peter’s on the Isle of Thanet, his family, school, lack of money, and holiday jobs. Reg joined the Royal Air Force as an apprentice, known as a ‘Brat’, in January 1939. He went to RAF Halton No 1 School of Technical Training, which had four wings with a thousand boys. After a medical examination, he was issued with a uniform and became a Fitter 2 (engines), looking after pieces of airframe. They were taught square bashing and he was promoted to leading apprentice. Reg recounts the antics of one Johnny Shaw who was expelled out of the Air Force. They did work in the extensive workshops, spending a few months learning how to use hand tools. Each one had a flight in a Tiger Moth. Reg then worked on engines (Merlins, Pegasus) then on aircraft. With the onset of war, his study was compressed and took his examinations after two rather than three years, becoming an Aircraftman 1st Class. Reg was posted as the sole apprentice to 34 Maintenance Unit in RAF Shawbury, which recovered crashed aircraft. His first job was removing instruments from a Spitfire. He talks of the importance of packing Masters onto sleepers and sandbags during transport, otherwise the centre section would hit the walls of humpback bridges. He was also tasked to remove burnt Ansons from a hangar. Part two Reg narrates how a Coles Crane sank in the mud when they tried to retrieve a Spitfire from a railway embankment. On another occasion, an aircraft was stuck in the roof of a village pub. They also had to recover an aircraft from a Welsh hilltop. He missed Christmas one year when their low loader was obstructed near the village pub. One plane they had to extricate had mistaken a chicken farm for a field and caused damage to the farm. They once had to close the tunnel in Liverpool to tow an aircraft. Reg recounts some incidents in which people lost their lives. Reg was transferred to 67 Maintenance Unit in Taunton. He details how they had to chop off part of a B-17 to get it back to the depot. Reg also performed the role of armourer for a time. He was sent to St. Eval in Cornwall where his first job was a Spitfire which had landed on a dry-stone wall. The Germans blew up the hangar where a recently restored Hurricane was located. Reg sought an overseas posting and sailed to South Africa on the SS Mooltan. He portrays life on board ship before he arrived in Bloemfontein at 27 Air School Bloemspruit. Reg carried out daily engine inspections of the Masters aircraft. They also had to make airworthy 104 Harvards, which were in a poor condition. Reg expresses his disquiet over the treatment of the African labourers. Part three Reg volunteered for aircrew, sailing back with the Mauretania and was posted to RAF Lympne. He was then posted to RAF St Athan for flight engineer training. He received instruction on Lancasters before going to a Heavy Conversion Unit. He joined a Canadian crew but with Halifax aircraft and Merlin engines. He was posted to a squadron with Les Lauzon (pilot) and carried out about six operations. He badly injured his hand removing an elevator lock so did not fly when his crew went missing. Reg subsequently found out that the aircraft was shot down, but they escaped and were taken as prisoners of war. Reg then joined 420 Squadron at RAF Tholthorpe and Jimmy Tease (pilot). His job was to stand next to the pilot and operate controls. He saw aircraft shot down, including a B-17 and witnessed V2s. Reg recounts some of the incidents they had with their aircraft and how they were dealt with. He gives a description of the FIDO aerodromes. Reg describes how the aircraft was struck by lightning in one operation. Reg received his commission and went to RAF Nutts Corner in Northern Ireland, a Transport Command station where he trained to fly Yorks. His final posting was to 242 Squadron at RAF Stoney Cross. Reg discusses his post-RAF life.

The Observer’s and Air Gunner’s Log Book covering the period 15 June 1941 to the 16 August 1963. Manning qualified first as an Air Gunner on the 4 July 1941 and second as a flight engineer on the 1 September 1941. He was commissioned on the 4 July 1943 as a Pilot Officer and promoted to acting Flight Lieutenant in April 1944, and again to acting Squadron Leader in March 1946. He reverted to Flight Lieutenant in April 1947 but was made substantive Squadron Leader in April 1956 in the Engineering Branch. He retired 16 August 1963. There are very few entries relating to his time as a Gunner. Most entries are as Engineer.

In 1941 when I was 10 years old my family moved to Lawn Farm, Edgcott. My father rented the farm of off [sic] the landowners and farmed around the vicinity of Grendon Hall during the period of time that the War Department was there. You could access Lawn Farm by way of Lawn House Lane in those days, but the farm is no longer there and the lane is a dead end.
I attended Grendon Underwood School until I left at thirteen and a half. We didn’t go onto Waddesdon School then, you would stay at the same school for all of your school life. To get to school I would either bike or if I had a flat tyre I would have to run – because I was always late! We would take dinner with us or come home and eat. If we came home we would have to eat fast and then get back to school quickly. A typical days lessons during the war years would be learning about aircraft – the difference between the enemies and ours (our drawings of aircraft were hung all around the classroom), scripture, arithmetic, dictation, history and gardening! Mrs Ruth Dawson was the headmistress and it was up to us children to maintain her garden. One way of getting out of lessons was to leave your gas mask at home – you were supposed to take it everywhere with you, if you didn’t have it you were sent home for it. I used to leave mine in the hedge on the way to school – it worked every time!
I would work on the farm to help my father and one of my jobs was to take the shire horses to the blacksmith in Grendon. I would think nothing of riding one while leading another three, the roads were much quieter then. The only vehicles we would get through were army vehicles on manoeuvres. One day I remember riding a horse round to Grendon and I heard this loud rumbling, round the corner came a tank. Well it spooked the horse and I was left hanging on for dear life while this horse bolted. It eventually calmed down as they do. During the war while the War Department was in Grendon Hall some of the F.A.N.Y.S (First Aid Nursing Yeomanry) would hire our shire horses to ride them.
As youngsters we would have to make our own entertainment and on a cold winters night when there had been a snow fall and a good frost, a group of us from Edgcott and Grendon would go to Mill Hill with our home made sledges and have races to the bottom. Due to the lack of drainage in the fields then they would flood in the bad weather and then freeze over so we could safely skate as well. We could ride miles on our bikes or make camps in the woods. For bonfire night we would go round the village collecting wood with a trap. Someone would get between the shafts and pull it along while another person would sit on the top to hold it all down. We would have a good bonfire in the field next to No 1 Buckingham Road.
The war years were a very exciting time for us youngsters – at one time the army was camped in Grendon Wood and were having practise fights in the surrounding area using blank ammunition. There was also a practise bombing ground over towards the A41 where they had an old Bristol Blenheim and a mock up submarine for target practise. They would use 14 lb bombs and we could watch them from Edgcott. This area was under guard but the guards used to fall asleep and my friend and I would sneak in and play in the aeroplane that was used for target practice. One such night we were pretending to fly this plane when all of a sudden they started one of their practice bombing raids – you’ve never seen two boys run so fast – it scared the life out of us!! Another time a British aircraft crashed in a field near to the practice ground. My friend and I ran over to see what it was only to find that the crew had set the plane on fire – they thought that they had landed in Holland because the land was so badly flooded. They assumed they were behind enemy lines and had lost their way.

During the war the pub was shut a lot because there was no beer available, there were also no cigarettes or tobacco, people would travel miles to try and find some. The pub shut at 10 pm at night and all day Sunday in those days. On VE and VJ nights there was a massive bonfire outside the pub and every one was celebrating with a drink or a few. My dad would send me down to Old Finlays shop in the village to buy him 3 double Woodbines when they were available. I was allowed a penny to spend in the shop and Old Mr Finlay would serve someone with paraffin and then put his hand in the sweet jar for my pennyworth – they did have strange taste!
At the end of the war the Army moved out of Grendon Hall and it was used as a finishing school for wealthy, middle class Polish girls for a while and then by the National Fire Service. The land my dad rented was bought up by the Home Office and in 1961 Springhill Open Prison was opened, amid much debate amongst the village.
When I got married in the late fifties I got a job as a cowman for Tim Benfield at Rectory Farm. We lived at No 6 Lawn Hill, these were farm workers cottages then. I worked with Sammy Gibbons, the Goodwin brothers and Alan Young. I would walk down to Great Ground and call the cows. Then I would just walk back up the road with the cows following in single file to the milking parlour. You didn’t need to chase them from behind – they knew their routine. The milking parlour was an Alpha Lavelle and we would milk 50 cows. The milk would go into 10 gallon churns and be put on the milk stand that was at the end of the barns at Rectory Farm. It had to be there by 8.30 a.m to be collected by Nestles. We always had a can of milk for our own use. When my son Richard was about 2 or 3 years old he saw some milk bottles on someone’s doorstep and didn’t know what they were. It took a fair bit of explaining by my wife Jean to convince him of what they were.
In Edgcott at this time there were 6 farmers who had milking herds, these were Brooms at Lower Farm, Curtis’s at Yew Tree Farm, Benfields at Rectory Farm, Drapers and Barrett’s at Manor Farm and Rawlings at Perry Hill Cottage – these last three were council farms. Eventually the council built a new farm house at the bottom of Lawn Hill for Rawlings to move into, where Don Edmans is now.
Other jobs that I did on the farm included ditching (this was done manually with a spade) and hedge laying by hand. Each field would have its own pond for the animals to drink from and during the winter when it was frozen over we would have to cut a large square of ice from it and push this under the rest of the ice on the pond so that the animals could get a drink. I would also do some ploughing and drove a Fordson Standard tractor. It had a starting handle and the tractor would start on petrol and then you would have to turn it over to paraffin to keep it going. I would pull a 2 furrow plough and it would take about a week to plough an average sized field. We had to dress up warm then as there was no cab on the tractor so you were exposed to the elements.
During August and September I would be on call 24 hours a day for calving and the same during the spring for lambing. Haymaking was hard work, you had to pitch the hay with a fork, and you would be doing this all day. At about 8.30 pm we would finish as it started getting damp and we would all go down to Marsh Gibbon to the pub for a few beers. In the spring we would be sheep shearing, Edward Benfield would bring us down some beer and we would have one after each sheep – after 10 we would be happy!! I would take the wool to the field opposite the Horse Pond, farmers would come from all over to have their wool graded here. The company would take the wool away with them.
In 1962 we moved to Buckingham Road and I continued farming until 1966 when I started work for London Brick Company at Calvert. I went to Calvert because the pay was better and the hours were less – I had weekends off only having to work every other Saturday morning. Jean and I would borrow her dads (Mr Taplin) Morris 1000 and go to Aylesbury shopping on a Saturday. I would cycle to and from work leaving home at 6.30 for a 7.00 start, and finishing at 4.30. If you were a 1/4 of an hour late you would lose £5 of your wages, and if you had more than 3 days off sick in a year you would lose a weeks holiday.

The work was very hard and dirty. We were outside in all weathers. freezing [sic] and wet in the winter and very hot in the summer. It was very bad when it was windy – brick dust blowing all over. you [sic] had to be fit, strong and healthy, but the pay was very good. We were on peace work so the harder you worked the more you earned. My job was blocking which was stacking the bricks and grading them. At the end of the day we would be covered in gritty brick dust. Showers were provided for us to use, but I preferred my own bath. At this time during the mid sixties Calvert was running at its peak, lorries were waiting for loads and there were no bricks standing around. The drivers were not on peace work to begin with and would all go out in the mornings. By mid afternoon they would all be parked up in lay-bys waiting for each other and then they would all drive in a huge convoy back through Edgcott at about 4.30. The company then started up a bonus scheme based on the number of loads they could do in a day, then the lorries were rushing backwards and forwards all day. they were hand loaded then and if they were not loaded correctly they would throw their loads in to the ditches as they negotiated the bends through the village. Other drivers would stop and help to reload the bricks, but invariably the lorries would arrive at their destination without the correct number of bricks on. At Dunmead Turn by the prison playing field, Eric Jackman (farmer at Fox Farm) driving his tractor and trailer met an LBC lorry. The lorry lost its load all over Eric’s tractor and trailer.
LBC were a good company to work for, they paid well, they provided overalls and boots (for which we paid a contribution), there was a good club and family events were held at Christmas. They always bought the children a Christmas present. It was also a strong union company, you had to join! In the summer if the temperature went over 70 degrees, we were given a glass of orange squash. A union man and a works man would watch the thermometer and we only got a drink if it went over 70, at 69 degrees we would go thirsty!
There were fabricated houses and a hostel there that were provided for displaced persons from other countries after the war. There were a lot of foreign people working there and also most of the working population from the surrounding villages were there. This was due to the mechanisation of farms, therefore needing less labour, and the growth of industrialisation. Many men who 10 or 15 years before would have been farming were now at Calvert. They were a good lot of men at Calvert, very good company.
In the mid 1980’s LBC sold out to Hanson Trust and it then started going downhill. House building was slowing down across the country and cheaper bricks were being imported from Holland. There was a spate of gradual redundancies, in 1911 [sic] took my redundancy and changed my job.
I started a very different job as a caretaker at Grendon Underwood School. To start with I found it strange as the pace of life was slower and less physical than the work I had been used to. Gradually I started to enjoy it more, I kept a lot of my own tools there and would do repairs around the building. Twice I had the honour of being Father Christmas for the children’s Christmas party and by the time I retired in 1996 the staff got used to my teasing and leg pulling.
Hopefully this shows how the pace of life has changed over the years in the village and how occupations have also changed.

My late husband had a career in the Royal Air Force spanning the ages from 18 until 55. He served both as aircrew and on Air Traffic Control duties. During the war I was employed in Operations/Intelligence on Bomber Command Stations, &, on demobilisation remained on the “Reserve” for ten years.
At a time when there were [underlined] so many [/underlined] incidents to recall I will tell the story of one in particular that remains imprinted on my memory.
On the 1 December 1943 at 2240 hrs in a Stirling aircraft EH 880 from 75 Squadron based at MEPAL near Ely Cambs. as a member of the crew my husband was returning from an operational mission (The aircraft developed a problem and was diverted to R.A.F. ACKLINGTON in Northumberland)
The on-site impression of a policeman serving in the Northern Constabulary was that it was far too low and needed another 30' – 40' in height. Unfortunately this was not achieved and the aircraft crashed on Cliffe House Farm near AMBLE.
Five children aged from one to eleven were killed asleep in their beds in an upstairs bedroom.
Downstairs in the farm at this time the farmer and his wife Mr & Mrs Robson had been entertaining old

friends, Mr & Mrs Rowell, a butcher from Amble (they had been rolling the bacon of a pig that had been recently slaughtered).
Fire broke out in the wreckage as the bomber hit the house & split it in two. As the occupants escaped from the burning debris they noticed an airman in the field with his clothes ablaze Mr Rowell, regardless of his own safety succeeded in extinguishing the flames by rolling him on the ground.
One of the huge wheels of the A/C was in the sitting room & the stairs had been blown away & yet in a child's cot a baby doll lay unscratched. The Wreckage was open to the sky.
It is very sad to report that the remaining six members of the crew were killed – Mr Rowell received a commendation for saving the airman's life (my future husband).
He suffered very severe burns & other injuries & received dedicated treatment at R.A.F. Hallow.
He returned to operational flying three months later.
It was then on 13 March 44 [inserted] (Monday) [/inserted] when all the pre-activity for D Day was under way that 16 Stirlings were sent from 75Sqdrn to St Nazaire, Torrents & La Rochelle on the Bay of Biscay. My husband's A/C was forced to abandon the operation and returned early with a bomb on board

and crashed on the edge of Castle Combe the picturesque village in Wilts.
On abandoning the A/C the CO was the only one injured in climbing over a fence during his escape. It was a miraculous escape because shortly afterwards the plane blew up.
My husband was indeed, fortunate to survive 85 bombing missions over enemy territory.
As we approach the 50 Ani of V E Day it is a timely reminder of the gratitude that the “survivors” owe to those service personnel & civilians who were less fortunate.

These recollections and reflections were written by Patricia Hook, Ken's wife, who was a WAAF in the operations room at RAF Mepal. They are all very similar, concentrating primarily on the Stirling crash in December 1943, where Ken was the only member of the crew to survive and five young children were killed in the crash. Patricia also recalls another accident on 13 March 1944 when returning from a mining operation, again in a Stirling with the mines still on board, the aircraft over ran the runway at Castle Combe, the undercarriage collapsed and the aircraft caught fire and exploded but all the crew survived. Patricia also reflects on wartime events at the time of anniversaries.

Raymond Harris was a pilot who flew the Lancaster on 34 operations with No 9 Squadron. The log book runs from 19 September 1942 to 24th August 1945. After his initial flying at the No 9 EFTS at RAF Ansty, flying in the Tiger Moth, Raymond went out to No 32 EFTS RAF Bowden, Alberta, Canada, flying the Stearman and occasionally the Tiger Moth. He remained there until December 1942 when he was posted to No 37 SFTS, Calgary, Alberta to fly the Harvard and occasionally the Anson. He remained there until April 1943 when he graduated and returned to Britain. Raymond was posted to 3 (P) AFU RAF South Cerney, flying the Oxford. He attended a BAT course at No 1532 BAT Flt, RAF Bagdown Farm in August. He was posted to 17 OTU, RAF Silverstone & RAF Turweston, 2 November 1943 to fly the Wellington. In April 1944 he was moved to 1661 HCU at RAF Winthorpe flying the Stirling, until May when he was posted to 5 LFS at RAF Syerstone flying the Lancaster. In May Raymond was posted to 9 Squadron at RAF Bardney flying the Lancaster. He did his first operation to Nantes on the 22 May and his second with his crew to Martin-de-Varreville on the 28 May. He did operations to Ferme D'urville, Point du Hoe, Argentan, Gelsenkirchen, Limoge, Prouville,Vitry le-francois, Creil, Culmont Chalimoray, Vileneuve st George, Stuttgart, Camagnes, Rilly la Montagne, Bois de Cassen, Trossy, Etaples, Lorient, La Pallice, Bordeax, Givorg, Brest, Girzerigen, Karlsruhe, Flushing, Tromso (Tirpitz), Urft Dam, Munich, Bergen, Ijmuiden, Altenbeken, Dortmund-Ems Canal, Sassnitz, Arnsberg, Vlotho, Bremen and Swinemunde. He flew a Cook's Tour and also took part in one of the Post Mortem operations. He was posted to 50 Squadron at RAF Sturgate in June. [underlined] PRODECURES AND LIFE OF AN AIR GUNNER WITH A LANCASTER SQUADRON [/underlined]
Our Crew arrived at RAAF Lancaster 463 Squadron from Swinderly Heavy Conversion Unit, on 27th December 1943, at Waddington, 3 miles south of the City of Lincoln in Lincolnshire. Waddington became an airfield before the First World War. In our time it had been updated with three concrete runways and sealed taxiing tracks and aircraft dispersal points. No 463 was a new squadron made up from RAAF 467 Squadron that had been at Bottesford, Leicestershire. This was done to create a base with RAF 50 Squadron at a satellite air field at Skellingthorpe, commanded by RAAF Wing Commander Arthur W Doubleday, from Grong Grong NSW.
Our crew was made up as follows:

They were all sergeants doing their first tour. William Brookers was a Flying Officer on his second tour of 20 operations, the rest of them had to complete 30 operations. Flight Engineers were drawn from engine fitters who re-mustered to crew. Our Commanding Officer was Wing-Commander Rollo Kingsford-Smith, a nephew of Sir Charles.
The Station Commander and Base Commander was Group Captain Bonham-Carter RAF (later on an Air Commodore).
The decision as to when we operated and the targets were selected by the Commander-in-Chief, assisted by his staff at High Wycombe, the headquarters of RAF Bomber Command, Air Chief Marshall Sir Arthur T Harris.
The list of targets was composed by the War Cabinet. These would be German factories that produced U Boats, aircraft, guns, cannons, tanks, ships etc. for the German warfare. Other targets were oil, rail and road. There may be special targets such as find and sink the Bismarck, Tirpitz and other battleships.
The cities producing this were attacked (eg: Krupp in the Ruhr Valley). The main targets in Germany was attacked by up to 900 Lancaster bombers.
Mines were laid in U Boat harbour such as Lorient and Saint Nazaare. This was done at a height of 700 feet. The mines were lowered on parachutes to break the fall and exploded as a metal ship or U Boat passed over them.
All operations were made at night. No lights on except essential illumination.
The marking on 463 Squadron were JO and on 467 was PO.
The first letters of the alphabet became ‘A’ Flight while the rest became ‘B’ flight.
Our aircraft was JOT.

All aircraft would be kept in the open at dispersal around the airfield. The ground staff worked there and had small shelter huts for the gear etc.
If a pilot wanted to air-test his aircraft he would do it early, so that any faults could be rectified.
Perhaps the fitter would go up too. The fuel tanker may be waiting to top up. Some of the fuel tankers were driven by the WAAF.
A general briefing may be at 13.30pm and would be attended by all crews flying, heads of Crew members, Commanding Officers, Meteorologist Officer (quite often a civilian), Intelligence Officer to advice of the enemy defences, guns and fighter aircraft.
Aircrew on operations were sent on leave for a week, every 6 weeks, and this continued after a tour of operations. Ground staff was only granted leave every twelve weeks.
Lancaster bombers had a fuel load of 2154 Imperial Gallons of 100% Octane petrol. They had 3 tanks in each wing. Fuel consumption was up to 1/2 gallon a minute.
The ground staff for a Lancaster would consist of:
2 Engine fitters, 2 Airframe fitters (for moving parts, wheels etc. Armourers for hydraulics and ammunition. Then in a group, Bomb Loaders, Navigation aids GEE H2S, Instrument Makers, Parachute packers and folders. Transport around airfield was by truck and bus also push bike.
If there had no been night flying, the previous night all our crews assembled at the flight office at Squadron Headquarters. The Pilots would go to their Flight Commanders, the Navigators would go to their Flight Navigators, they would be given something to do or be lectured. Similarly the wireless operators and bombardiers went to their leader’s office.
The message may be received, say, 9am or later, as to whether we would be operating. This Would come from the Commanders of Group Headquarters using dedicated phones. Afterwards Security would disconnect the public phones, as they would monitor all outgoing phone calls made from High Wycombe Bomber Command.
The Flight Sergeant in charge of services would be asked if aircraft would be available (i.e. serviceable).
By this time the target may not be divulged but the petrol load and bomb load would be. If the fuel load was 2154 gallons of 100 octane, it meant a long flight (eg: Berlin). The aircraft would stand at 3/4 full.
The fitters E (engine) would be run the engines and test. Fitters A (airframe) would be check all moving parts etc. The armourer would check ammunition etc, and as they were sorted and loaded on the trolley and aircraft.
By then it would be lunch time and Pilots and Navigators would assemble and be told the target. By now the Adjutant clerk to the Wing Commander would have the Battle Order printed and posted on the notice board.

After lunch final arrangements would be made, aircrew meals at the Sergeants Mess times would be set.
Bomber Command specify the bomb load eg: size of the bombs and mixture including incendiaries. These were packed in canisters and held in by a bar of iron, that were released, allowing 4 1/2 pound bombs go, but the canisters came back.
Depending on the distance to be travelled for the night, it dictated the petrol load. A full load was 2154 gallons about 7 tons of 100 octane petrol.
If the aircraft sustained engine failure before the target, the operation, if over Germany, the bombs would be dropped if a target could be found and the operation would be aborted. A
Lancaster could fly unloaded on two engines but would gradually lose height.
There was specially constructed airstrip near the coast of East Anglia, to allow damaged aircraft to get down. It was of tarmac about 3 miles long a quarter mile wide. On hearing a radio call of “Mayday” or “SOS” a row of searchlights on each side would light up to cone or tunnel for the aircraft to pass under.
Our aircraft number was ME615. The letter may have significance to the factory where it was built.
The first aircraft to come to 463 Squadron came from the Jaguar Factory at Coventry.
Jaguar had their own airfield.
27/12/43, we were sent on a cross country training flight for 4 hours 10 minutes.
All new pilots had to do a “second dicky” to learn how an experienced crew went about their duties during an operation and listen to commentary. It was a quick course for a pilot to see how an operation progressed.
2/1/44 we were sent on our first operation to Berlin. However we had to abort over Holland due to glazed icing on the wings at 12,000 feet. This meant we could not climb to the desired height of 20,000 feet. This difficulty meant that we used fuel at a greater rate and may not get back from Berlin. I, as the experienced crew person, suggested we drop the bomb load, unarmed (safe) and return to base after 3 hours 55 minutes.
7/1/44 we were sent on a “bullseye”, consisting of a day flight to a target in the Irish Sea. It is a small rocky outcrop. This took 8 hours 15 minutes.
13/1/44 we did a test flight with the Flight Commander, Squadron Leader W Brill for 40 minutes.
On these flights the Navigator and Bombardier did not take part.
14/1/44 we went to Brunswick our first successful operation, for 5 hours 37 minutes.

17/1/44 we did some day ground firing over The Wash for 53 minutes.
21/1/44 we went on operation to Magdeburg for 6 hours.
27/1/44 at 17.47pm we took longer on operation to Berlin for 8 hours and 55 minutes.
Joe Freeman had been commissioned as a Pilot Officer.
28/1/44 at 00.16am we took our own aircraft, T for TARE, on operation to Berlin. On approaching the target a German night fighter came close and the rear gunner shot it down. It was a Focke Wolfe 190.
30/1/44 we went to Berlin, taking off 17.19 hours and lasted 6.33 hours.
15/2/44 to Berlin, taking off 17.30 hours and arrived back at base after 6.58 hours, in our own aircraft JOT number ME615.
19/2/44 To Leipzig taking off at 23.54 hours. Landed after 7.01 hours being 6.05 hours on 20/2/44.
20/2/44 to Stuttgart, taking off 23.57 hours landed after 7.21 hours airborne 7.18 hours.
24/2/44 took off for Schweinfurt, but port inner engine was failing, returned on 3 engines after dropping bomb load. Airborne for 5 hours.
25/2/44 taking off in JOK ME614 for Augsburg, airborne from 21.30 hours for 7.25 hours.
1/3/44 in our aircraft, JOT ME 615, taking off at 23.29 hours for Stuttgart for 8.15 hours.
Then Flying Officer Brooker went on a Gunnery Leaders Course at Catfoss.
8/5/44 in JOT 615, rejoined my crew whom had a stand in during my absence. Taking off at 22.15 hours for Brest Airfield, airborne for 5.04 hours.
10/5/44 taking off at 22.16 hours for Lille Railways yards etc. For 2.39 hours. The bomb load would have been heavier and fuel load reduced. No block busters.
11/5/44 take off at 22.23 for Bourg Leopold for 3.37 hours.
Crew then went on 6 days leave.
18/5/44 taking off at 22.40 hours to St Martin’s for a trip of 3.24 hours.
31/5/44 taking off at 00.23 hours to Saumur marshalling yards. Airborne for 5.10 hours. On 1/6/44, however, we received an order to return with another bomb load.

3/6/44 taking off at 12.55 hours for Cherbourg wireless installations for 3.34 hours duration.
6/6/44 D Day. Taking off in JO’L M130, for Pierre Du Mont, airborne for 4.29 hours. A gun emplacement near the coast.
8/6/44 to Rennes railway yards, airborne for 6.34 hours. Had to land away at Acklington and
10/6/44 returned back to Waddington base.
10/6/44 took off at 21.58 hours to attack Orleans railway yards. These were to retard Germany taking up positions in Normandy, also to prevent attack where French citizens would be in fairly large numbers.
Night operational flying time was 289.20 hours.
