Darling, I have been indulging in a perfect way of spending, so that it is too late to go home & write you a long letter. I’ve bought some chamois leather to make a waistcoat for Barbara’s Christmas present (windproof to wear when autobyking etc) price 10/- - and 2 prs of stockings for me! They so rarely have my size in that I decided to be a devil & get some, artificial silk ones of good make. I’ll probably draw some out of my P.O.
Hope you got home safely & pleasantly. Good luck at Halton.
All my love
Ursula.

Stalag Luft III
Kriegsgefangenenlager Datum: 17th Sept 1944
No mail from you, dearest. I’m still in the dark as to how you have fared May onwards. We eagerly follow the daily progress of events (& of the Allies) but the time passes very slowly, more so than ever before. We have a library going at last. Unfortunately our Red X food issue has suffered a permanent cut of 50% - a general one I believe in all British P.OW. camps. We have been on this scale for a few weeks but, strangely enough, I feel it very little & am as fit as ever. My practice troubles continue though. I only manage 2-3 hours daily & those in the most distressing of circumstances but I am doggedly resolved not to give in now even if lack of ability forces me to do so when I become a free man once more. Incidentally if the fiddle youve bought for me has no “E” string adjuster, would you get one. Love to you & Francis John

The only events of note during the week were a tetanus inoculation & a vaccination. The former caused no trouble apart from a tender arm & the latter is still in a state of minor irritation[?]. Having had no fresh supplied since we left Luft VI my stocks of tobacco & cigs are running out. Also the stuff[?] of life is now in slightly shorter commons[?]. We have at last got electric lights in the billets & the evening hours in the flickering light of a lamp of pyjama cord & margarine (horribly smoky) are over, thank goodness. They were sore on the eyes. Most of the Army fellows here get their mail in 2/3 weeks (9 days is the record) our 5 months delay makes us very jealous. My fiddle difficulties are worse than ever. Sometimes wish I’d never started. Love to Frances. Always your[?] John

[one indecipherable word] very cheered to have your 62 & 13th July – opening paragraph of former heavily censored. Photos don’t in the slighted add to censorship delays. Many thanks for sending off music I need it badly now & am very short of strings. Could you please send at least 6 “A”strings – one only lasts me a month & the camp is very short of them. I loved your description of Frances, her ways & progress & send more anytime. [censored sentence] I believe I asked for a metal tea pot – please don’t bother now – we don’t cook our own food as before. [censored sentence]
Love ever yours John.

Yours of 29th Aug here, [censored word] still to come. Thrilled to hear of your Marathon to Chalfont etc & sorry the trip wasn’t more fruitful. You certainly do your level best, much more than any other wives, I bet. Best of luck darling but don’t overdo it. I am amazed at your energy – such a contrast to my helplessness. Was delighted to receive Kaysers studies – came in quick time & at an opportune moment. I badly needed fresh material. Am still short of strings. My instrument is repaired fairly well but I am still struggling to get practice room. I can’t see why you haven’t been getting my mail. I write as often as I can. I’m afraid this isn’t a very [censored words] side. [censored words] like the current news though. Love to both John

Kriegsgefangenenlager
Datum: 10th October 1943
New address for mail as above – parcels still to Luft VI. Another parcel from my darling wife – Music from Selfridges AND violin strings. Both are extremely welcome – wish I’d had that tutor months ago. I now have ample material [inserted] except strings [/inserted] for practice for at least a year, though I’d still like the stuff I asked for in my last letter. I badly new outdoor shoes, my feet now protrude from my present pair. I’d also like another comb & if poss. another lighter similar to the one already sent, which, if temperamental, does yourman [sic] service. This catalogue embraces [underlined] all [/underlined] my outstanding needs – my loving thanks to you, dearest, for your kind attention to all my wants. Still anxiously awaiting news of your home hunting efforts. Love to Frances & of course to you. John.

No fresh letters to acknowledge, yours to 14th Sept here. Hope mine are getting through at long last. Managing to do quite a lot of fiddle practice now sometimes in the strangest of places & most awkward circumstances. Have even spent a few hours in total darkness sitting on a pile of spuds in a shed, grinding out scales! Am still having trouble with instruments – my own has been re-assembled by enthusiastic amateurs here but its not strung up yet. I pray that the glue will hold. Have been able to taste for 2 months – even throughout a wretched cold which is going but slowly. Life is awfully dull – your letters & photos liven it up a lot & I’m eagerly awaiting news of house purchase. Weather luckily has been mild & dry for 2 weeks so that absence of coal not unbearable. Hope both my darlings are well. I long for you always. Love John.

Final [indecipherable word] today!
Kriegsgefangenenlager Datum: 10th November 1943
Very happy to have, today, yours of 6th Oct & glad to know that you’ve had some from me at long last. [One sentence censored] I’m always mild in comparison in my comments of local conditions which frankly a[remainder indecipherable] [two indecipherable words] the best. Interested to read of Touche’s pension – I have 14 yrs of previous service which I lose by it. However I must be thankful for what I get & will write to G.T. My Father tells me he has stopped sending tobacco & cigs until “contact is renewed.” Most donors seem to increase gifts when supply route [inserted] is [/inserted] threatened in the hope that at least a portion will get through. I get very tired at times, dearest, & long for you passionately. Hope you & Frances are fit. Always yrs

No mail from you, alas. The[sic] [there] has been a noticeable falling off recently. Hope you are getting mine now. I’d give a lot to be able to write more often. Life not much different here – no severe cold yet but awfully wet weather. a wooden hut, the [censored some words] has been allotted to us as a theatre - & we number 2000 – any show will have to be done many time for all to see. In one respect only is this camp an improvement on the last – facilities for organised education are slightly better & we have 4 small rooms available for classes. These of course are in constant use. I have no hope of a better place for fiddle practice & may have to desist [?] when weather gets really cold. I miss the photos of you & Frances which Ba used to take. I often gaze longingly at those I have, will 1944 see us together?? Fondest[?] John

The last month has been putrid for weather, not particularly cold but so wet! One result is that my senses have again vanished after 2 or 3 months service. I don’t expect to be able to taste again until next summer at the earliest. My own fiddle has been glued together again & is behaving quite well. Hope youre [sic] both well – Fondest love

Kriegsgefangenenlager
Datum: 5th December 1943
Your birthday will occur in 3 days time. Would that I could be with you then to wish you well personally & in my own fashion. However I shall think of you more than ever on the 8th (if possible – for you always in my thoughts). Do you ever contemplate the first gorgeous moments of our future reunion – and the subsequent bliss – I can assure you that I do – often. Please give your parents my warmest thanks for the generosity in lending us all that cash to enable you to try for a home. I wonder, though, how we can possible repay them. Am afraid that I shall never see my June parcel. I was looking forward particularly to the slippers and blanket – there’s nothing to be done about it though. Hope you have a really good birthday & a better one next year. My fondest love to you & daughter. Ever yours John

Heard results today of Music Exams sat at Luft III. Have passed the simple one – Grammar of Music & a cert is waiting at Royal Schools of Music, London. Try to collect it, please, I failed the papers on Harmony – the first exam failure of my life. The only fellow to pass was he who was trying to instruct us. The frost has failed & we’re back to the awful slush again My early morning efforts at fiddling have resulted in an awful cold – the 2nd already this winter. See if you can get any recompense from Red X for my June parcel which has been lost. Its an awful shame that all the labour in the blanket & money in the slippers should be wasted. I don’t expect they’ll listen but you could try. Still eagerly awaiting housing details. Wish mail was more satisfactory – in both directions. Love to you both. Ever yrs

Kriegsgefangenenlager
Datum: New Years Eve 1943.
In a few hours 1944 will be here. From it I hope for one thing above all else & that of course is to be reunited with my beloved wife & daughter. I send both of you my fondest love & warmest greetings coupled with every best wish for a year of happiness, with many similar ones to follow. I hope you are both well & coping with the anxious & laborious work of moving in & settling down I anxiously await news of progress. We are now in the grip of a real winter – wind & driving snow, now getting quite deep. Until it really started we had every possible form of precipitation with heavy frost alternating with slushy thaw. An impossible climate here. I’m not sorry to see the end of 1943. Quite the most unpleasant year of my life. Always yrs. John

My darling. No mail from you alas, since last year. I eagerly & anxiously awaiting news of progress with the house. I don’t know if I shall ever be free again but should I return I’d like to give Francis a grand present so that she will be able to associate my appearance with something pleasant & possibly get to love me on the strength of it. If & when my day of liberation approaches, would you search around for something she would really treasure, buy it & keep it [inserted] hidden [/inserted] until I come on the scene. The weather here continues atrociously, lots of Slush, fair amount of cold – most unpleasant. I’m keeping very fit though. Had a cig parcel from ‘The Wardens’ (bless them) my first for about 4 months I hope you are well & Frances too

Almost a blank year so far for mail from you. Only 1 letter & so I’m still in the dark as to where you are living & how you are coping. Having no winter at all here. The bitter cold was short lived & we’re back again to fearful slush. I’ve managed to get a new pair of boots out of the Red X store [censored words] We have here the worst climate imaginable but I’m extremely fit strangely enough although I have precisely no exercise. Ever since weve [sic] been here the Red X food store has been well stocked & the usual issue is 1 British & 1 Canadian parcel on alternate weeks. We thus get, I consider, ample sugar, tea, a little cheese, jam, prunes, and other delicacies. What I miss is bulky food eg bread & veg. I’m certainly [censored words] I love you so much, dear
John.

Datum: 6th February 1944.
Only 2 letters from you so far this year both of which were [inserted] of [/inserted] earlier date than I had before xmas – so I still don’t know anything of your location or mode of living. I have developed another cold (my third this winter) but so far has escaped flu which is prevalent (very). Otherwise I’m very fit but longing for you more than ever. For a change the camp is moderately dry underfoot & its possible to move about with[inserted]out[/inserted] discomfort. Had an excellent food parcel from Grunfelds Swiss friends, sent this time from Portugal. They are very, very kind. I’ll try to send a card of thanks if I can share one. Thanks to the generous cig & tobacco parcels (mentioned before) I have been able to help some room mates who are very short. Love both
John

Datum: 20th Feb 1944
My Dear Frances: I am afraid that it is already too late for this card to arrive before your birthday but at least it will tell you that I haven’t forgotten all about you. I hope you had lots of presents & that among them was one from me. Perhaps I shall be home in time for your next birthday & able to give you something myself. Mother writes a lot to me about you & I’m so pleased & proud to know what a good little girl you are. While I am away, I hope you will look after Mother well & see that she behaves herself always and is a credit to her daughter – she wants some looking after, I know but you must do your best. Have a happy birthday, Frances. Love

Datum: 5th MARCH 1944.
No mail so far this month but some tobacco from the faithful Miss Hoare. I’m greatly struck by the kindness of so many total strangers. Wish I could get a parcel (clothes etc) from you. Haven’t had one for 9 months now & supplies of socks & boot polish running low. No toothpaste at all. Can’t say I’m overjoyed at my promotion – anything that comes merely through passage to time isn’t worth having. Any chance of photos of you, Frances or home? I think of you constantly & try to imagine your activities. Frank P still not heard from wife. Am still slaving away at fiddle such drudgery & such miserable conditions for practice & NO progress! Hope you & daughter thrive
John

No mail to answer – alas! The camp is drying up a bit after the awful period following the thaw & I have recovered my good health & sense of taste. Since I’ve been a POW my zest for farming has diminished & has been replaced by an absorbing interest in music. Of course I spend hours per day on my fiddle, read a certain amount on the subject & listen to records whenever possible. There are many & varied recordings on the camp. My hope is that you & I can go into the subject seriously when we’re together. It has certainly made a tremendous difference to my existence here & my interest grows instead of flagging as with the other activities which I have from time to time taken up. Fondest love to infant (& you!)

Still no mail to answer. It’s a month now since the last. Weather here improving slightly – still a bit of snow lying about & heavy frosts every night. Being at my wits end for room in which to fiddle. I braved the scorn of the camp today & used a brick built dustbin cum incinerator (it wasn’t burning). It was pretty cold but otherwise satisfactory if smelly. Quest for space is a never ending struggle made [censored sentences] are still getting regular supplies of Red X Food despite increased mouths to feed but have suffered 3 cuts in spuds during the winter. However we aren’t on our knees yet. Frank P. has at last heard from Vera. We all wait anxiously but patiently for something to happen soon. Love to both, John

674 Items. Collection concerns navigator Warrant Officer J R McKenzie Valentine (1251404 Royal Air Force). The collection contains over 600 letters between JRM Valentine and his wife Ursula. It also contains his log book, family/official documents, a book of violin music studies and other correspondence. Kriegsgefangenenlager
Datum 16th APRIL 1944
No mail from you to answer. Have heard from Eileen Johnson & Fred Don. Could you thank both especially the later for the several he has sent (alone of all my friends). Hope you were able to give Frances a joyful anniversary. Winter has now gone, thank goodness, but signs of spring still wanting. Am extremely thankful to have survived the winter in such good health – especially considering how I pass my time. My practice in the incinerator is a great success – I get almost absolute solitude (dirt & cold also) for about 6 hours per day but also I make no progress. [censored] roceeds here according to flour. Has everyone gone to sleep in England? We wait patiently but old Jo seems to be the only active body nowadays. Please give someone a shake.
Love John.

Kriegsgefangenenlager
Datum 30th APRIL 1944
Nothing fromm you since the beginning of the month. How I miss it! Very cold here – I have felt colder all this month than during the whole winter – there’s no sign of spring yet either. Yesterday was my seven hundredth day of confinement. How many more I wonder? Have received 10 books from Sweden. Sender unknown. Unfortunately all were thrillers or Western Stories so I’ve handed them to the library. Still no sign of your parcels of last June, Sept or Dec & no tobacco or cigs for months. My fiddle has been repaired by a chap here & is very good now. Wish I could do it justice. I wonder if you realise how incredibly keen I am to master [underlined] solely [/underlined] for the purpose of playing with you. “Pretty – pretty” solos don’t interest me a bit. Hope you’re both thriving. Kiss Frances for me
John.

Kriegsgefangenenlager
Datum: 7/5/44
Over a month since I had any mail from you. Am longing for some daily. Had 2 small tobacco parcels from Miss Hoare (bless her) but no other for months. Frank P never gets any so I have pooled all my present stock & future receipts with him and another unfortunate. Shocking weather here – rain, mud & wind. Had a game of football today – my first exercise since last autumn! What little landscape that can be seen from here is as bleak as in mid winter. No leaves on the trees yet & the fields bare. The mail situation is shocking nowadays – Its impossible to keep up any correspondence with you, yet there’s so much I want to know about you & the house. My patience is being sorely tried! April was the worst month ever for letters. Fondest love to both. Keep well
John.

Once again no mail. Your precious letters have for some time been arriving in bundles but only once a month. Have had a few small anonymous tobacco parcels recently. Everybody is most kind but I wish I knew who they were. Am still practising violently – in my incinerator. In the opinion of the camp I’m “round the bend” (or mad) a common disease here. However I’m firmly convinced that I’m sane enough despite my taste for curious practice rooms. We’re getting [censored words] nowadays & all anxiously awaiting action somewhere. Are you hearing us? Hope you & darling daughter will have a holiday this year. Am a bit anxious about Leslie these days. Hope he is safe. Love to both John.

Unfortunately no mail from you to acknowledge but I have another from your Mother. I enjoy hearing from her. Would you tell her so & thank her? Could you tactfully make it known amongst my friends & relations that when writing to me concerning an anniversary of some sort (eg birthday) they need not express the hope or expectation that I shall be home before the next. I have been reading such expressions for long enough now to be sick of them & to distrust them entirely. Older POW’s have been wished the same thing for years now - & are they home? I’m very fit nowadays - working like a Trojan at my fiddle. It would appear now, though, that I shan’t emulate Nero. Kiss my big daughter for me. Love to both
John.
