Dear Mrs Wilson
My son Frank was Rear Gunner in the plane which left base on March 30.31 and did not return.
My sympathy with you is therefore most sincere.
We are endeavouring from enemy sources to get early news and if we do, I shall write you immediately, I beg of you to let us know should you get any information.
We got your address from Oakington
Yours sincerely
J Fuller.

Dear Jessie,
After Saturdays effort in which I wrote 5 letters I missed you but have more to tell you today. I’ll start off by telling you I couldn’t get a long week end[sic] for next Friday so I shall not be home [deleted] for Xmas[/deleted] until Xmas.
Well now for some good news. We have had a change of rooms. From a cold and draughty room facing out over the channel[sic] we have moved to a big light room N0.124 with private bathroom and lav.[lavatory] It is much bigger than our long room and houses our seven beds comfortably. It is much warmer than 121 and has roll up black out screens whereas the other was permonantly [sic] blacked out. In the bathroom we have a hot towel rail and lino on the floor. As Hughie would

say “its Wizard.” A most amusing thing happened yesterday which the whole wing is still laughing over. Sunday morning we went outside for Church Parade and found everyone gazing up at the tower and fluttering from the flag pole was a pair of ladies [sic]knickers and on top of the pole was a jerry. Some one [sic] had pulled over a good joke.
I had a good a [sic] week-end with enough beer to make me merry Friday and Satuday night and last night went to the De la Ware Pavilion Theatre and saw a good variety. Mario de Pietro was top of the bill he was [deleted] marvelou [/ deleted] marvellous. Mum would have liked to hear him.
Went to a lecture by Rosita Forbes this afternoon. She was very conversant with things in Europe and had recently met with Hitler and Stalin and is evidently on speaking terms with all the important men and women of our time
[page break]
Have you received your money yet. I sent it by registered post on Saturday and when you pay Tickett see if anything has been done about my insurance. Heard today that we may be hear[sic] for about six weeks after Xmas but in my new room I shall not mind.
I haven’t [sic] heard from Tom yet and hope he is a bit more comfortable now. I believe [sic] I have forgotten Joyce in my letters lately so if she has noticed it tell her I am sorry. Not received yours or Milly’s cake yet but if you are hard up in fact I [deleted] v [/deleted] think it would be better if you saved your money Xmas.
Well good night my darling and keep smiling Xmas will [deleted] still [/deleted] soon be here Kiss Pam for me and ask her kiss you for me
Always your fondest

Dear Jessie,
Will you meet Mrs Vale at the barrier to catch the 7.48 AM Thursday Morning and follow instructions of my letter of Saturday. I still do not know for certain whether I am going but cannot get home in any case as I have had week end [sic] leave stopped till [sic] further notice because I was absent for Church Parade. There were about 50 missing and although its [sic] the first Ive [sic] missed I got tumbled and have had late night passes and week end [sic] leave stopped and my posting to Prestwick postponed. This postponement seems doubtful to me so I want you to come along in case. The reason I was absent for Parade was that I had had a bad night and was coughing a lot with a rotten cold. I’ve had this day or two [sic] and as I knew others dodged other Sundays I thought it would do me more good to stop in.
[page break]
Unfortunately only 24 turned out for Parade out of about 80 so they took the names of those present and some of the absentees got it in the neck including yours truly. Just my luck.
Well darling you [inserted] are [/ inserted] writing some very lovely letters lately in fact the one I had today seem [sic] to bring you right up right up before my eyes just as if you were telling me yourself.
When you go back Saturday [sic] you must take Pams [sic] birthday present with you as it will save me the postage and will send her a card from here. I hope you all manage all right on your rations and don’t [sic] get to [sic] slim. Is Mum keeping well Ask her to forgive my not writing and tell her I will at the first chance. All my love darling.
Until Thursday
Your far away

Thurs Evening
Dear Jessie,
Was very happy to have your letter this morning and to hear of those little homely incidents which I miss so much here. Please write as often as you can, it doesn’t matter how trivial little things seem to you at home but they do help to [deleted] me [/deleted] keep me in touch with things and not too feel so far away.
Well dear you wont [sic] know me when I come home. They intend to make Guardsmen of us here. We march along swinging our arms and I think we look very smart. Discipline is very hot here and there are all sorts of regulations coming along each day. Hats have to worn walking about the building and always one has to be in full dress with all buttons done up and boots on and if greatcoat is worn one must have gloves on. We have to be in by 10.15 PM and lights are out by 10.30. I find that to Parade correctly by 8.45 I have to clean my boots and buttons overnight.
[page break]
[inserted] 2 [/inserted]
As I told Mum yesterday we had two inoculations and a vaccination yesterday morning and by last night was feeling pretty bad I am glad to say that it is working off now. Otherwise I am feeling quite fit You’l [sic] have some strong man by the time I’m finished here.
There are about 500 of us and the place is all stairs and corridors and we all walk about with shoulders back and heads erect. It realy [sic] is fine thing for any man but one misses the ability to come and go as one pleases. Three places around here are out of bounds these are frequented by officers and we cannot go more than five miles away without a pass. Hastings is just within bounds though we have not been there yet. I intended going to the pictures last night and when we decided we felt too qued [sic] said we would go tonight but that did not come off as I had to collect some kit. That included pullover, scarf, three pairs of socks, holdall, housewife ante gas oilskins, shaving brush, button stick, plimsolls and two towels. We shall try tomorrow night.
Leave here is arranged for one long weekend
[page break]
[inserted] 3 [/inserted]
a month and one short one. The long one is from Friday after 4.30 P.M until Monday noon which would give us two full days together. O Boy how I am looking forward to that. The short weekend is from Noon Saturday until Midnight Sunday and does not seem to give us long enough together to justify the expense, it will cost 12/- to get home. As that is so I have got hold of a short week end pass to use so that three of us can go to Brighton for the day on Sunday. Dick and Mountstephen have got long end passes but I did not apply for the one as I was afraid it might clash with Xmas leave and I do not want to miss that.
You say it rained a lot at Southend well we have had rain every day and it has blown like hell the whole time. The spray from the heavy seas tarnishes old buttons in no time. We get up at 6.30 and do have to make our own beds and clean our sink and on Sat I think we have to scrub our room. Pamela was certainly right thinking I was at work. Was sorry to hear Pat and Joyce were not so well and hope they soon be right Us five from 0.5 were given one room but found it was
[page break]
[inserted] 4 [/inserted]
only for four so we cut the cards and of course I lost so I am in a different room though with nice fellows. This coursed [sic] me to be transferred to D Flight but I am trying to get back to B. For heavens [sic] sake don’t let anybody send a letter here addressed to Mr Redgrave as we have had it impressed on us that we are no longer Misters but 743047 L.A.C. Redgrave H.C. We get to bed pretty early last night it was quarter to ten and its nice to think you think of me under our eiderdown
I must tell you about Bexhill in another letter as I shant [sic] be able to get this in the envelope and don’t think how your letter took as long as I get them often. Give my love to all, and for yourself and Pamela my fondest love and Darling you don’t know how I miss you and I realise now more than ever how sweet you’ve always been
Ever your loving husband
Harry
P.S Am enclosing your 10/-

Mon Evening
Dear Jessie
I had a terribly tiring journey back Sunday night and did not get in until a quarter to twelve. By quite a coincidence I ran into the chap I travelled up with when crossing Victoria Station and so I had company from there. Dick Vale and Mountstephen got back this morning and caught the 7.48 from Southend. That’s the train I shall catch in a fortnights time. Just fourteen days Darling and I shall be with you for two whole days and three nights.
We’ve had a hard day today, just getting into our stride, we had an hours [sic] lecture and two hours drill this morning and two lectures and marching this afternoon. Breakfast was pretty awful this morning but dinner and tea was pretty good.
I’ve been talking to Dick this evening and would you pack and send on our book on Modern Marriage
[page break]
I can’t write any more tonight as all the chaps are talking and relating that weekend experiences. I went to bed early and am writing this in bed so forgive the writing
We have started Morse and have receive at six words a minute. Well it’s lights out so I cannot say any more
All my love
Harry

Tuesday Evening
Dear Jessie,
I’m laying on my straw mattress writing this and am feeling pretty tired. I suppose thats the effect of being up at half past six this morning. Theres not much to tell you so I will run through the day as we have spent it.
As I said before we were up at 6.30 A.M. and washed shaved cleaned my boots and buttons and got down to breakfast about half past seven to find a queue of about a hundred waiting but still eventually I got to the dining room. Had rashers of bacon and tomatoes two slices of bread and a mug of tea. The eats are all right but the tea is rotten. You grab a mug and go over to a metal ern [sic] rather like a small milk churn and turn on the tap. After that Parade at quarter to nine and was put in D. Flight. We then marched up to the De. [indecipherable word] Work Pavilion and into the
[page break]
the cinema to have two film lectures on Nav. Marched back to dinner and paraded again at quarter to two. Drill till 3 PM and then marched up to the Pavilion again for more film lectures. Dismissed at 4.15 and the boys and myself went straight out so that we could see something of the town before dark. Had some real tea in a cafe bought boot brushes and blacking in Woolworths. Had a stroll round and got a library book and settled down to write to you. Unfortun [deleted] et [/deleted] ately there is not a chair in the building, we eat on benches so I have to write this laying on my bed. May go to the pictures tomorrow so perhaps I may not have time to write. Hope Pam Mum Gwen & Joyce & Pat are all well. Love to you all
Harry xx

Dear Jessie,
Another nine days and I hope to start my long week end leave. The thought of that makes things much easier here I don’t know for certain that I shall get it but I shall certainly try hard.
Work has been much harder this week and we seem to be hard at it from after breakfast till tea time. The Training Wing has taken over another big house here and we do Morse and Navigation there. The house is about ten minutes walk away and that means an extra fourty [sic] minutes marching a day It is at the bottom of the main street and all the people turn out to watch us. We seem to be the star attraction here and more people each day come along to see us drilling and marching. The Morse came quite a surprise and we have got to be able to receive and transmit six words a minute before we leave here and twelve words before
[page break]
[inserted] 2 [/inserted]
before we finish our course. It’s a pity I did not know before as I find it rather hard to memorise the code. But still I shall soon master it.
We had a real “big noise” here today Sir somebody Barnet. He came to inspect the school and our rooms had to be spick and span and we had to show off our best parade manner.
I understand we have another inoculation tomorrow though I don’t think it will be as bad as the last. My vaccination is feeling a lot better now. we don’t get time to feel queer
You mention Income Tax, would you send the letter on to me or if it has got to be returned in a few days send it back with my address here telling the Income Tax people I have been called up.
Pamela will look very neat when she has had her hair cut. See that they do it nice.
If you turn the [underlined] main [/underlined] switch off for the fires and [deleted] th [/deleted] take the grille off you will find that the heater element is held in by two screws one at the top and one at the bottom. Whats [sic] happened is that the element wire has [deleted] broek [/deleted] broken near the terminal
[page break]
[inserted] 3 [/inserted]
and if you unscrew the terminal and [deleted] it [/deleted] take off the small broken piece of wire you can re-connect it screw everything up again switch on and Bobs your Uncle
I suggest you look up in the dictionary for reconnaissance and at the same time can check how I’ve spelt it. Its nearer than yours I bet.
You should have seen me sewing the metal eye in the top of my greatcoat this evening You would have laughed. Mind you I did it very well the only trouble I had was that in the housewife they issue us with the thread was in a skein and I got it all in a tangle and had to throw most of it away. I used the darning needle for the job. Was that right?
They spring a surprise on us this morning. In our inspections up to now we have always had our coats on and this morning the officers came along and inspected us whilst we were drilling with greatcoats off fortuneately [sic] I was well polished but one or two were caught out. I intend to behave myself as the punishments are having leave stopped or losing late night passes.
[page break]
[inserted] 4 [/inserted]
I had a letter from Tom on Monday and he seems to be doing plenty of fatigue duties and says that they are up to there [sic] eyes in mud.
Oh I nearly forgot to tell you we had a six mile route march yesterday afternoon and my feet were O.K. Its just as well they are as we are marching most of the time
Your letters all sound very homely so write as often as you can. I think you get more time than I do now. Here the whole thing boils down to either you stop in and write letters and clean boots and buttons or you go out and have time for neither
Still apart from missing you all and one or two comforts I am quite happy and feeling very fit
Well goodnight Dear and looking forward to when you can hug and kiss me
Always you loving Sweetheart
Harry
P.S. Thanks for the stamps and kisses for all xxxxxxx

Dear Jessie
We’ve had another inoculation today and my arm feels a bit stiff so I shall not be able to write so much tonight. It’s rather difficult [deleted] how [/deleted] because all the chaps are making their beds and blankets are flying about and curses are being hurled about the room.
We had a lecture from the M.O and he told us a good story.
Here it is.
Sometimes in middle age men get a structure. That is a closure of the life in the doings and to cure this they insert pipes down it. Well
[page break]
they have various sizes of pipes according to the size of the doings and one day a very large negro went in to a clinic for treatment of a structure and ranged on the wall were all sizes of pipes and the doctor took down the largest. On seeing this the negro says “Boss as don’t want to put no fire out [?] only wants to pea”. [sic]
Its [sic] raining and blowing like the devil today. Oh have you posted that book on.
Ever so pleased you are going to [deleted] rugh [/deleted] write everyday. [sic] I will do my best to do the same. Kiss Pam for me and some for yourself. Love to all

Dear Jessie
I am getting your letters quite regular now during our break from ten to half past and I look forward to that sit down with your letter and a cup of tea. Its a real joy Dear.
We've not been out anywhere this week except for our nightly stroll down the N.A.A.F.I. canteen. There we have a cup of tea and cake (twopence [sic]) and laugh over our days work they hope to have a radio and darts there soon but I suppose that will be after we've gone. Shorts and [correction was “any”] Gym [deleted] sp [/deleted] slips have been issued today and we start P.T. next week. Today has been easy owing to our stiff arms and we had pay parade this afternoon. I received five pounds. I am trying to wangle new boots on the strength of mine being too small. I hope its [sic] works.
Yesterday afternoon we had to write an essay on the Progress of the War. It was an awful shock but I struggled through and it sounded rather good when it was finished
Two of the boys are on a weekend leave so three of us are going

The morse is a bit of a bind How nice it would be [sic] learn it like we did the Three Course Method and 90° turn. You know you're by far the sweetest instructor I ever had.
Sorry to hear Mum is queer and hope she is better now Tell her I will write at the first opportunity. Had a fourpenny haircut in the hotel yesterday quite good. You seem to be getting some nice programmes on the wireless. I wish we had one here
Well its nearly tea time so cheerio till tomorrows letter and before I close todays letter from you was [inserted] the [/inserted] best so far you [sic] writing very well.

Dear Jessie
Did you think I had forgotten you. Well I roughed out part of this letter Saturday morning and then went out in the evening and got in too late to write it and went to Hastings for the day yesterday but will tell you more of that later.
This part I started Saturday morning. Thanks for Pams curl I bet she looks cute now and no thanks to the Abbey Road. But dont [sic] let that worry you I'll write to them from here In any case they cant [sic] have any more than £2 per month and they wont [sic] do anything about it. Had more kit issued this morning five brushes two pairs of pants extra trousers and I changed my boots for a new pair. I've put in my application for next week-end and will let you know as soon as it is confirmed.
It was lovely in Hastings yesterday. The sun shone all day and we left Bexhill immediately after church parade, Dick Mount and myself. We walked right out over the cliffs to Marina
[page break]
and from there along the prom into Hastings. There were crowds of people about and you would have thought it was midsummer. By then we had earned a drink so had a half pint and then went to Lyons for dinner. After that we climbed up to the castle and down again and along to the other cliffs, you know, where [inserted] we [/inserted] walked along to Ecclesbourne Glen. Came down from there and walked around the Old Town and back to Lyons for tea. By then it was dark and we went back on to the prom and watched the great waves pounding on the sea wall. [deleted] Dont [/deleted] Can you think of memories I had of our time there and it all seemed so much like doing the same thing, watching the waves, climbing the cliffs, sitting in the shelteres[sic] and having our meals out. The place [smudged] is full of R.A.F. chaps and they all had girls to walk out with but still we are respectable married men. For all that it would have been nice to just talk to a woman. Its an awful wrench to suddenly have nothing but male company all day every day. Still its [sic] got to be got used to. We walked almost all the way home again by the same road as you and I walked and got back about ten oclock. Not bad going in new boots did about twelve miles or more.
[page break]
This morning my feet were quite sore and to make it worse we had a very fatiguing time. Immediately after parade there was drill and something must have put our sergeants back up, because he was a devil. He made us double up and down the front time and again and my feet were smarting and sore. We had only ten minutes [sic] break and then a Maths test getting back to the Sackville about ten to twelve. I thought we [sic] going in to dinner but no another [underlined] forty [/underlined] five minutes [sic] drill with more running. He marched us back and something else annoyed him and he made us double up and down outside here with our greatcoats and respirators on. This afternoon we went to a lecture on the Maginot Line and finished the day about half past four I feel dead beat.
Well I think thats [sic] all for today so cheerio and
All my love to you all
Your always loving husband
Harry xxxxxx
P.S. Please excuse the writing but its most difficult perched up on this bed. H.C.R.

Dear Jessie,
After a great struggle I have got my long week end pass but this morning I realy [sic] thought we were going to be disappointed. As I told you Monday I had applied for it and it appears that there were a lot too many so the Flight Leader drew lots and I lost. When I got home last night the boys in my room told me I was unlucky. You can imagine how I felt. When the F.[Flight] Leader came in I was out but they all told him how miserable I would be and showed him your picture and Pams and said how anxious I was to see [deleted]them [/deleted] you. The outcome of their appeal was that the F.L. came in this morning and said that a chap named Steward might not want his pass. I met him and after much humming and haring he decided to let me have it. I'll tell you all the news Friday home about 7.P.M.
Lots of love
Harry

Dear Jessie,
Its [sic] been a lovely day here today. The sun shone brightly all day and it was realy [sic] warm. My aches have returned after three hours drill but a compliment from the Wing Warrant Officer made it worth while [sic] and we learnt that from now on we shall be putting a polish on what we have been taught.
Went up to the N.A.A.F.I. canteen tonight and had a cup of tea and listened to a pianist from NO.1 Squadron he was very good and I thoroughly enjoyed it. How do you like the new notepaper? Quite smart isn't it. Writing pretty awful but thats [sic] not too bad for a letter in bed. We had a lecture by P.O. Biard you know the one that won the Schneider Trophy in 1922. Isn't it annoying how one can

be mistaken in a man. When I first saw him I christened him "The Mannequin" [deleted] at [/deleted] [inserted] and [/inserted] yet when he was introduced to us in the lecture it turned out he was a test pilot for Supermarine Napier for twelve years and had had a most adventurous carreer[sic]. Hope you have managed the blackout curtains alright and the electric fire. I see you have had another liner stuck in the estuary which later caught fire. You seem to get all the excitement down there. We had a thrill today. An Avro Anson came over. Thats [sic] how tame things are here. If it wasn't for us training here the locals would not know there was a war on. I've settled down again now but it was hard yesterday after those few days at home.
[smudged]Kiss[/smudged] Pamela goodnight for me please do that every night and tell her I shall be home soon and for your sweet self well I can only say I think of you at least a hundred times a day and am sure you think of your

Dear Jessie
Thank you for your letter this morning. I dont think [deleted] you [/deleted] mine was quite so prompt but still you have more time than I do. I feel at a loss for any news tonight, the day has been just the usual routine Maths Signals Drill and mealtimes. Perhaps you'd like to know what we've had to eat today so here goes. Bacon and Tomatoes for breakfast but I don't know what happened to the Toms as we usually have them fried in halfs [sic] but this morning they were served from a big stewpan [sic] and were just like tomatoe [sic] soup. Cornflakes and bread and jam and tea completed the meal. Dinner consisted of steak and kidney pie cabbage and potatoes followed by custard and prunes. For tea we had a treat. individual meat pies shaped like those round pork pies. Unfortunately
[page break]
[RAF Crest]
they did not taste like pork but still were not too bad. Brown and white bread butter and jam and tea made up the meal. I eat quite a lot of brown bread now. slimming you see. Went to N.A.A.F.I. and had sardines on toast and a cup of tea for fivepence. By the way. I had to borrow two shillings this week. Roll on Pay Parade. Wuthering Heights is down here this week and everybody seems [deleted] too [/deleted] to be affected by [inserted] the [/inserted] sheer misery of this film. Remember we both remarked on it when we saw it. I'm sorry these letters have so much I about them but its very difficult to find anything else to write about and I hope you get some interest from them.
Well dearest its nearly lights out so heres [sic] a good night kiss x all to your sweet self. from
Your [underlined] faithful [/underlined] Husband
Harry.
P.S. Faithful. I've not had a chance to be otherwise.

Dear Jessie,
Was glad to hear you have payed[sic] the Abbey Road and I am writing to them this weekend about us paying the extra seven and threepence a month. Tomorrows pay day so I shall be sending you a Pound tomorrow to last you the fortnight. Its [sic] been quite amusing here over paying for our laundry. As I told you yesterday I had borrowed two shillings and by dinner time today had eleven pence left. My laundry came to fourpence and then I met Mount and he was broke so I had to lend him fourpence to pay for his this left me with threepence and [deleted] now [/deleted] no [deleted] ga [/deleted] cigarettes. Then we had some luck. Mount had fifty Players [smudged] sent [/smudged] him and so I payed [sic] [deleted] his [/deleted] him threepence and had ten fags. That’s [sic] how things are by pay day.
We are doing a lot of Maths and some of us

find it wants a lot of recalling so will you send on to me my Works of Mathematics Part 1. and that red exercise book that has a lot or workings in. We stopped in this evening doing Algebra and Morse. Some voluntary homework.
The Russians have shown themselves up in their true colours haven't they. I wonder whether [Correction. Was: weather] it means any widening of our conflict. I hope not we have quite enough to do as it is. Still no good worrying. I suppose we shall [deleted] won [/deleted] one day be back together again for good.
Give my love to all and remain assured of mine always
Harry xxxxx
P.S. Post those books at the first opportunity. thank you.

My dearest
Thank you so much for your lovely letter today it simply radiated love and its nice to have you writing these sweet things you would find so hard to say. I think I [deleted] feel [/deleted] understand just how you feel. When I think back over the years I feel a great and overwhelming gratitude for all you have been to me and the great happiness you brought me. The happy memories [Correction. Was “momories”] will have to carry us on to Xmas and we must make the most of the short time I shall be home. The leave has [inserted] been [/inserted] definitely fixed from the 22nd to the 29 [underlined]th[/underlined]. Only seven days. It's a disappointment [sic] but its more than some will get. Think of the men in France, they'd give a lot for that. Six volunteers from each flight were called for
[page break]
to stop behind for duty over the holiday. Nobody stepped forward so the names will be taken from a hat. But still if I am unlucky I shall get a weeks leave after Xmas and so be home in the new Year. Im [sic] afraid it will upset things at home if I am away but for myself as long as I get the seven days with you I shall be content. If I miss you it must be much harder for you and I'm beginning to understand that saying "They also serve only who wait". I at least have plenty of new friends. You must find one, male or female to go to the pictures with. At least it will not be so lonely. I dont like to think of you walking alne [sic][alone]and sitting alone and having to [deleted] the [/deleted] go home by yourself. You deserve more than that.
I will go to the Abbey Road over the Xmas and try and straighten out this business. Did Tickett say anything about my insurance? My books came on Monday so I have been able to dig into my work. As for not being to[sic] clever, I want promotion so that I can earn more money.
Have settled down in my new room and like it much better. Ive [sic] stopped in this morning
[page break]
[RAF Crest]
and done some work on Algebra and some Morse and several little jobs I needed done[sic] and am shortly going to bed. We had a most strenuous morning and the P.T. was killing. One solid hour without a breather of running and most difficult exercises and then a run back to the Sackville to change for drill. What a life. Ive [sic] lost my waist line and am almost as slim as when you first knew me.
Ive [sic] not heard from Tom. How is he and what is he doing? Ask Joyce to let me know. Well its nearly lights out and I want to clean my boots so good night my love Xmas will soon be hear[sic]. Look after yourself and my baby Pam and give my love to all.
Your ever loving

Dear Jessie
Its [sic] a wonderful day down here more like September than [Correction. Was “then”] December. The first bright day without a cold wind and the Promenade is thronged with people. I have just come in from the balcony outside my room and from there I could see Beachy Head and Eastbourne away on my right and Hastings to the left. I hope you went for a walk this morning. I imagined you and Pamela strolling out and would have given the world to have been with you. [deleted] Afl [/deleted] Alf Dick and myself strolled out after church this morning just to give the girls a thrill. We're doing well can't keep face with all the dates we have. I am going out to tea today with a local chap and his wife. They invited me
[page break]
[RAF Crest]
to their home and seemed quite happy at making one of the "brave and noble airmen" welcome in their home. Hes [sic] got a dart-board and we going to have few hours on it after tea. He tells me he is inviting his sister as well so it looks as if I shall be well away. Getting my feet under a table in a few weeks in a strange town is not bad going. Still its [sic] not like home.
I have enclosed some photos [sic] that Mount took when we walked to Hastings and I see he has described them on the back. You will recognise some parts of them.
We are having a Maths exam on Monday but as I am on guard duty [deleted] that [/deleted] I'm hoping I shall miss it. Guard duty consists of two hours on and four hours off through twenty four [sic] hours so think of me whilst you are in bed, marching up and down outside the hotel in the middle of the night. We have the next morning off so you can have some sleep In any case it will be a change to Maths, Drill, P.T.
Has Mum written to Milly about coming down during
[page break]
my leave because it will be the last chance for me to see her for a long time.
You probably think me crazy trying to get home just for a few days and then coming home again Xmas but I feel that once we leave here it will be months before we see each other again and I think every moment counts.
Can you arrange for Mum to mind Pamela Xmas Eve so that you and I could go to the Palace and meet the boys. Dick and his wife will be there and chaps from different [deleted] centres [/deleted] training wings are sure to find there[sic] way there during the evening and we can have a merry time.
This starts the third week without you and darling I'm [deleted] y [/deleted] just longing to see you again
All my love
Harry xxxx

My darling Jessie
Thank you for the Standard which I received this morning Its nice to be able to read about the home town. Have you had much snow. Its [sic] quite thick here [smudged]although [/smudged] it has not snowed since Thursday. Yesterday we did two hours drill on the snow covered Prom and a route march and snowball fight in the afternoon and this morning another route march. I can tell you I've had quite enough of this weather. I felt so tired after dinner that I had two hours sleep on my bed and feel [deleted] mucher[/deleted] much fresher now.
I have bought a Ronson lighter off of [sic] Grandy. He had sent to him as a gift with R.A.F. crest on it but as he has one already I bought it
[page break]
[RAF Crest]
from him. I'd better not tell you how much you would faint. Anyhow it's a brand new 21/- one. I shall have to go very careful until the twelfth.
As far as I can see I shall get a short week end on Pams birthday. We'll have a private little party to celebrate. [deleted] Thirtly [/deleted] Thirty chaps went to Scotland and I do hope and pray that I get home before I am sent North.
Over Xmas Grandy met a pal of his a traveller for Merry Miller cakes and flour and the outcome of the meeting was that he brought back a suitcase full of cakes gateaux and jam roll, in fact all the range of their products and after each meal we have a slice of cake or battenburg or some such fancy. We have bought a bottle of Robinson's L.B.W. and have before going to bed. Unfortunately we have to have it in cold water but still its refreshing.
So you[sic] going to be rationed for meat and sugar
[page break]
soon. The sweet tooths at home will have to learn to drink their tea without sugar if you are going to have puddings. Pamela will have to cut down on her meat.
[deleted] lab [/deleted] Maybe your troubles will be over early in the New Year. I hope so for yours and Pams sake.
Wish them all and yourself my very best hopes for a Bright New Year free from all worries and fears and between you and I the wish that very soon I shall be home with you for good to continue our very happy married life together
Forever your adoring
Harry xxxx

My Darling Jessie,
Have just received your letter of Sat-Sunday You old sprucer [sic]. I’m sorry hear [sic] you felt so queer I suppose the cold weather made your tummy ache more than usual. I went and saw Ruggles of Red Group on Saturday and had a jolly good laugh. With it was William Boyd in a western film which was also quite good and the two made the best programme I have seen in Bexhill. On Sunday night there was a terrific clutter at midnight all the chaps coming out of their rooms and singing Auld Lang Syne and throwing dustbins downstairs and all through the night there were ragging parties going round pulling chaps out of bed and generally pulling chaps out of bed and generally fooling around. The next morning we got [deleted] let [/deleted] lectured by e W.O. and warned that we have got to
[Page Break]
[RAF Crest]
behave ourselves from now on and were threatened with all sorts of punishments. During the morning they gave us two periods of P.T. [physical training] and stopped our break just to break us down. The Squadron W.O. [Warrant Officer] is properly on the war path this week and comes round watching us at drill and our Corporal told us that the instructors have been told to “sit on us”.
I’m sorry to tell you I shall not be home this week- end and I think I’m going to Scotland on the 15th. By next Tuesday I hope to know whether I shall get a pass and if so if whether I can use it as the A Flight boys went on the Saturday to get to Scotland on the Monday. I am not sure if we go on the 15th a Monday or have to get here on the Monday. Its [sic] rather difficult to explain but it boils down to the fact that I may not be home again before I go and darling I must see you before I leave. The idea buzzing round my head is for you to come to Bexhill for a couple of days towards the end of next week. I dont [sic] think it is advisible [sic] to bring Pam though I would love to see her but I think you would
[Page Break]
find it rather difficult. I would cost about £3. How are fixed for cash. I could help you out for most of it but I am not paid until the 12TH. Dear Jessie
Just read your letter of Tuesday and hope its [sic] now a bit warmer. All the snow has cleared away here but there is a bit warmed. All the snow has cleared away here but there is a biting East Wind in fact yesterday was the coldest I have ever been. We were doing P.T. [physical training] and the cold wind simply cut through us and my knees were blue. Hope Pams cold has not developed and that you are feeling better your-self. Was happy to hear that Mrs Franklin came round. Its [sic] nice to feel you are getting together both in similar circumstances. I have passed in the Maths exam we had and am on the list for posting to Prestwick. I still cant [sic] tell you definitely the date we are going and you must be prepared to come down here if it can be done. The reason I am in doubt about going is that when the names were called out for Prestwick I was not included, so I mentioned it to our Corporal who said I was going. Last night I went and saw Mr Yeats our W.O. [Warrant Officer]and asked him about it. He asked my name and when I told him
[page break]
[RAF Crest]
he said “You failed your exam” to which I explained that it was the other Redgrave so he checked up and found that was so. He then said he would tell me later as the draft had been made out for Prestwick. If you do have to come down here I may be able to arrange for Dicks wife to come with you then you would have something to do all day. Well I think thats [sic] all for now and will write again on Saturday. Give my love to all
Always your loving
Harry. xxxx
P.S. Am going to see “Man in the Iron Mask” tonight. Last Night there was a Wing Dance which I
went to.

Sat
My dearest Jessie,
I still have nothing official to tell you although everyone thinks we are going next Saturday so I am going out soon to fix up for you to stay here from midday Thursday. until Saturday. Before I finish this letter I will give you the address where to go and how we shall meet. Franklin and the other Southend boys are not going but Dick is writing for his wife to come down and you are meet at Southend Station to catch the 7.48 A.M. To do that you must catch the National bus at the Bell at 7.30. and hurry down the High Street and don’t [sic] forget you have to go on the other side of the railway bridge. From Fenchurch St. you go to Mark have and get a 3rd to Victoria. You come out practically on the station and you must get on the 9.45 from platform 13 which will take you Bexhill Central direct. As you get in about 11.30 I shall not be able to meet you until evening. The return ticket from Southend will be about 16/3 so you buy that I will meet expenses down here.
[page break]
Well Dear I have just come back from the Boarding House and everything is O.K. Enclosed is a card giving you the [deleted] d [/deleted] address and to get there you come out of the station and turn right and go down the first turning on right which takes you down alongside the railway until you get to the Post Office and then you turn left down Devonshire Road cross on to the Right hand side and go down until you get to Boots which is on the corner of Parkhurst Rd. I think its best if you wait until I call you for you after tea that is about 5.15. During the afternoon you could stroll out but dont [sic] stand about watching the airmen drill or you might cause some excitement. As far as I know Dick’s wife will be coming and you are to meet at the barrier of Southend Station in time to catch the 7.48 but if she is not there do not wait in case anything has prevented her coming which I could tell you in time.
I shall be very sorry to miss Pams birthday and would have loved to have seen her but things have tightened up here so much that to have chanced coming home without a pass would have been asking for trouble. Tell Mum Joyce and Gwen I shall be sorry not to have seen them but they will understand. This is a war and personal feelings do not count for much with the powers that be. Give my love to them all.
Your loving Husband
Harry. xxxxxx

Dear Jessie,
I had quite a fan mail this morning. One from you and Mum and one Milly. You want to know what the R.A.F. inscription means. I believe I’ve told you before it means “To the Stars through Adversity” and is very apt. We are certainly meeting adversity at Bexhill. Thank Mum for her interesting letter and from what she says you are getting more than your share of excitement. Milly says she will try and see us after Xmas. Will you ask Mum to write to her and ask her to come before the holiday as our leave is only from the 21st to the 27th. That means the day after Boxing Day getting up at 6A.M. to go back. We have been told that in the second week in January we shall be going to the Isle of Man and so we must make the
[page break]
[sic] of my Xmas leave. Its [sic] quite possible that once in the Isle of Man I shouldn’t see you for about three months so do you think it worth while [sic] getting a long week end [sic] next week in view of the fact that it will cost 12/6 to get home and the same again on the following Thursday. I shan’t have much money over the holiday but think it worth being hard up to see you. If you feel you would like me to have the week end [sic] let me know [underlined] by return. [/underlined]
We have just been issued with all our flying kit two flying suits helmet goggles three pairs of gloves and a pair of fur lined top boots valued in all at £15. I fail to see how we shall take all our stuff away in one kitbag but still plenty of time to worry about that.
Went to the cinema last night and saw Union Pacific and enjoyed it. Well I want to catch the post so goodnight my love.
From your loving
Harry xxxx

Dear Jessie,
Well we've got here at last and are in a big hotel. We went to Barking changed to Victoria and from there to Brighton and on to Bexhill A lorry picked us up at Bexhill Station and took us to the hotel. Had a good dinner and then a medical exam. After that we were given our rooms. There are five sleeping in my room on single beds with straw mattresses and pillows. Four blankets but no sheets and bare boards. There [deleted word] is hot and cold water laid on but no soap or towels. I think it is going to be very nice here though plenty of hard work and drill. The discipline is rather hot and we have been told what we can do and what not. Gloves must be worn with greatcoats and nobody [deleted word] can wear shoes and so on. Well dear we are just going out to recconoitre [sic] the district and find where we [deleted] go [/deleted] find a cup of tea. We have been warned about incorrectly addressed letters so be careful.

Dear Jessie
I am afraid I haven’t much to tell you yet other than to say I got back here about half past eleven. I had to wait until half past seven for a bus and then had to run down the High Street. This afternoon we started to learn semaphore signalling. You know how the sailors do with two flags.
Mountstephen has had his Radio rental transferred so we have got a wireless here now. Hildegard is just singing “The Natural Thing to Do”. This boy and girl song reminds [inserted] me [/inserted] of us.
I feel a bit blue tonight, miss you so much, but hope to see you again soon and have another wonderful week-end. Love to you and all and give Pam a goodnight kiss for me.
Always your adoring husband
