In the Autumn and Winter of 1938/39 we observed from the Airfield boundary at Scampton, Hampden bombers landing at night using, in those days, the “chance light”, which lit up the landing path when the aircraft was on the last part of the landing approach.
I thought at the time, how great it would be to handle one of these massive machines. So I joined the R.A.F. V.R., and on 26th February 1939 had my first flying experience in a Miles Magister initial training aircraft at Waltham, near Grimsby. It was most exhilarating.
On the declaration of war on 3rd September, 1939 the R.A.F., V.R., was called up for service and I was despatched to N0.4 Initial Training Wing at Bexhill on Sea.
Further initial flying training was carried out at Perth and Prestwick in Scotland, followed by a period at the Advanced Training School at Sealand, Cheshire.
In July, 1940 I was posted to No 14 Operational Training Unit at Cottesmore where I could now, after some further training on Ansons, be able to fly the Hampden with which I had been so impressed in 1938/39.
Owing to restricted cockpit space it was not possible to have the usual dual instruction. So one went through the necessary flying instructions in a Hampden jacked up in a hangar with a compressor motor to activate the hydraulic system to operate the landing gear, flaps etc.
After having done a few exercises in the hangar one was allotted an aircraft with an instructor to oversee the engines being started and final preparations made for take off.
So finally the engines were opened up and the Hampden was eased off the ground and into the air. It felt great to be airborne on a particularly fine day being august 18th 1940.
After becoming [inserted] more [/inserted] familiar with the aircraft “dusk and dark landings” were undertaken. Take offs and landings were carried out by “pounding the circuit” and as the light faded and it became dark, one was then night flying.
At the beginning of November 1940 I was posted to 106 Squadron, then based at Finningley, as an operational pilot. Our first tasks were low level mining operations termed “Gardening”, at Brest, the Elbe, Keil and Lorient.
On 23rd February 1941 the Squadron moved to Conningsby which was a new airfield just opened, near Boston, Lincs.
[page break]
-2-
The operations of the Squadron now concentrated on sorties to Germany including the Rhur [sic] area.
On 4th April 1941 a low level attack was made at night against the battleship Sharnhorst [sic] and Gneisenau during a brief break in the high level bombing at the port of Brest. I had my aircraft damaged after a second attempt and I was really surprised to receive an award of a Distinguished Flying Cross which was the first decoration received by a member of 106 Squadron.
Formation bombing was practised with our Squadron commander W/C Bob Allen for a daylight raid with fighter escort on the battleships at Brest. Unfortunately the three squadrons which took part suffered heavy losses.
On 12th august, 1941 a similar sortie was carried out against the Gosnay Power Station.
Wing Commander Bob Allen was a great inspiration to the crews and he was decorated with the Distinguished service order during August.
On 3rd September, 1941, having completed my first operational tour I was posted to 14 O.T.U. Cottesmore as an operational pilot instructor and was awarded a bar to my D.F.C.
1940/41 was a period of experimental or pioneering work for the heavier onslaughts built up with the Lancaster.
I trust that the foregoing gives a brief idea of my experience with 106, Squadron, which had some excellent personnel in those days.

Dear Jessie,
You seemed to have excelled yourself at letter writing. I had one at tea time yesterday and two this morning. I’ve just written to the Abbey Road giving them particulars of my income and also told them that I had arranged with you to pay £2.7s per month. I hope you can manage that because that is the amount of interest and must be payed. Also I want you to draw from the bank £1.1.9 being the balance of the 7/3s for Sept. Oct. Nov. I am enclosing £2 one of which I want you to pay Ticketts. Sorry to hear you are hard up but still everyone seems to be in the same boat.
Hope you were successful in finding a young man up to a point I shouldn’t mind [deleted] but [/deleted] as you would

would [sic] know how far to go.
When I wrote the date on this letter it made Xmas seem very near just twenty days and I shall be home for a long time. The thought of that will carry me on. Well dear I’ve got to dash off to register this so tell you more later. Give my love to Mum and Joyce Gwen and Pat and think of me always as
Your loving husband

Dear Jessie,
This must be the longest you have had to wait for a letter but as you know I was on guard Monday and did not write last night because I did not know whether I was going to get my pass for the week end. I am glad to say it’s gone through all right, although I’ve heard rumours that there will be no leave until Xmas. Providing these rumours are wrong you can expect me about nine Fri evening. Friday afternoon is Pay Parade so I shall not get away until about four and shall probably have to go via Brighton. I’ve just come upstairs from a Maths Exam which the others took on Monday. That guard duty certainly did me a good turn as the exam paper took the boys by surprise in that it contained a logarithm and trigonometry
[page break]
questions. I had the chance to polish up those two branches. I finished the paper with nearly an hour to spare and think I have got them all right. For P.T. this morning we had a cross country run about half way to Hastings and back. Two months ago I should have said I couldn’t do it. They have worked wonders on me physically. Thanks for the Standard it’s very pleasant reading when one is far from home. and would like it every week. As far as I know we do not get a ration allowance to take with us it just goes to that mysterious “account”. I had a lovely tea on Sunday plenty of cakes and a chocolate gateax [sic] and a home made sponge sandwich it was all very homely and the sister was young and pretty though not to be compared with my sweet little wife. Our evening [inserted] at Xmas [/inserted] out will be the Saturday night and I hope that will be convenient for everybody.
Give my love to all and tell Pam Daddy is coming home. Get plenty of sleep before the week end dear as I shall want to talk to you for hours. Just you and I snuggled up close.
Bye Bye till Friday darling

Dear Jessie,
Well we've got here at last and are in a big hotel. We went to Barking changed to Victoria and from there to Brighton and on to Bexhill A lorry picked us up at Bexhill Station and took us to the hotel. Had a good dinner and then a medical exam. After that we were given our rooms. There are five sleeping in my room on single beds with straw mattresses and pillows. Four blankets but no sheets and bare boards. There [deleted word] is hot and cold water laid on but no soap or towels. I think it is going to be very nice here though plenty of hard work and drill. The discipline is rather hot and we have been told what we can do and what not. Gloves must be worn with greatcoats and nobody [deleted word] can wear shoes and so on. Well dear we are just going out to recconoitre [sic] the district and find where we [deleted] go [/deleted] find a cup of tea. We have been warned about incorrectly addressed letters so be careful.
The address is, and must be written

Sunday morn. 10.5.42
Dear Mum,
This is just a scribble to let you know that alls well from the “front line”! Thought I’d get it done now or you may not get a letter until the middle of the week.
Now for the latest. The Raf authorities here are in a panic & on Friday morning we found that all cadets who’d passed exams were either being sent on indefinite leave or being put on gun posts. It was just [deleted] my [/deleted] the luck of our flight to get in
[page break]
for this. The idea quite appealed to me at first & when they were nominating duties I rushed up & got with Denny & 2 more for the first post. This is high on the tower of the largest Raf hotel & overlooks the sea. We have no protection from the wind (which is keen up there) or, more important from Jerry bullets. We have a Vickers gun mounted on a low tripod. We’ve been called the “Suicide Squad” for even if Jerry doesn’t see us we’re just as likely to be mown down by our pals on another building at the back!! But it’s a great thrill & I’m itching for a crack at Jerry. Afraid our guns ain’t very effective but its satisfying
[page break]
[underlined] 3 [/underlined]
to have something to hit back with. We’ve arrange [sic] our duties from 2 o’clock one day to two the next so that we get 24 hrs on & 24 off. Get a bit of time for sleep on night on as we’re only there during dusk & daylight. So picture me up there under my tin hat & by my gun scanning the Channel horizon for Jerries. We are the only ground protection Eastb. has (hush!!!) but we get British fighter patrols now. Jerry usually dodges in when they’re elsewhere though as he did at dawn yesterday when I saw Bexhill, just down the coast go up in smoke. He was around all day & tried Eastb. at 9. at night. Luckily some
[page break]
Spits were about and chased them back to France before they could get in. We’re still living upside down – more so than ever but I hope we can get back to the Imperial soon. I’ve no clean things or anything handy! They found another body in the Cavendish the other day.
I am glad that Dave’s been up. He’ll like it & I’m sure it’ll do him good. He’s a [underlined] grand [/underlined] lad. If you see him again tell him I’m looking out for any amount of letters & tell him I’m standing firm on old England’s shore to face the foe. Even if I don’t bring one down it will be satisfying to know I’ve shown them what I feel & what
[page break]
we're made of. I little thought I’d have a chance so soon. We were told that we’d be here until the end of May at least. Just hard luck to get stuck here. I think we may be getting 48 next week-end but I’ll let you know later. [deleted] If so [/deleted] Just in case could you let me have £1 out of my money. I’m not short but I have to be prepared & I’ve been spending a lot on food.
Must go & get to Chapel.
Lots of love to all. Hows Mick?

Letter from Bill Akrill to his mother
Description
An account of the resource
Writes about measures after bombing attack - half the course to go on leave and other, including his flight, to man gun post. Describes how he and friend Derry rushed to get the first post. They are on a very exposed gun post with a Vickers machine gun and work 24 hour shifts. Mentions that they have fighter patrols but the Germans attack when they are not present. Mentions attack on Bexhill and attack on Eastbourne driven off by Spitfires.
Bill hopes to get back into the Imperial Hotel soon, since he has no clean things. Catches up with news of family and friends. Ends with cartoon drawing of machine gun post and aircraft being shot down in flames.
