Title
A name given to the resource
John Russell's F543A Record of service
Description
An account of the resource
John was ground crew, initially a Flight Mechanic Engines from 12 February 1943, having gained experience he received further training to Fitter II E from 19 October 1943. He was promoted to LAC 1 November 1944 and then corporal 1 November 1945. He joined the service in 14 January 1942 and was demobilised in 8 January 1947, he served mainly in Great Britain but was in Egypt from 27 March to 6 September 1945.
The donor kindly provided this additional information. 'My father recounted a number of anecdotes about his service and one concerns the entry on his service record where you will see it just says Cheddington. As you will be aware RAF Cheddington was at that time a USAAF base. I cannot verify this it is only what my father told me. The reason for the week at Cheddington was due to a dispute between Bomber Command and USAAF around the turn around time of the four engined heavies. The RAF said the Americans were taking too long compared to the RAF for engine servicing or replacements, not sure exactly but it resulted in a group of RAF personnel going to Cheddington to show them how the RAF did it. As I recall father said he was somewhat surprised to find rows of USAAF service personnel sitting on chairs in front of the aircraft while the RAF changed all four engines and brought the aircraft back on line.
He also told me about being on crash duty for the returning aircraft and of one instance when the airfield was attacked and having to run for the shelters.

After being here for nearly three months I still find it hard to determine where Ancient Egypt ends and where the modern begins, for this land is a strange mixture of old and new, startling contrasts and confusing customs and ideas.
From the door of my tent I gaze westwards and see more tents, and beyond them sharply rising ground of barren sandstone rocky ground, which converges into a high ridge of sandstone formation extenting [sic] away on the horizon into the desert.

The Prom’ was crowded it reminded one of Blackpool on August holiday week. Being a holiday weekend most of the people from the colonies came into the town, also a large number of Aussie, French, Tommy, Polish etc., troops came in on leave.
We remark upon the colourful scene the masses make [deleted] [indecipherable word] [/deleted] their shorts, shirts, print & silk dresses, stylish frocks etc.,
We chatted with several chaps and occasional girls untill [sic] about 9 PM when the moon came out accross [sic] the water and lent enchantment to the cool evening so we went for a walk to the gardens where we sat awhile beneath arches covered with wild rose’s’, [sic] then we decided to spend the remaining couple of hours at Henri’s small place. They had been very decent to us and most obliging, cheerful and very interesting so we had quite a party lasting untill [sic] well after midnight. We left them and walked along the sea-front towards the hotel, we were surprised to note that there were still a fair ammount [sic] of people around. We were twice stopped by enterprising females, this as most men know is rather [inserted] un [/inserted] usual, not the fact of being approached by them, but that we were approached when there were two of us together, the professional ladies normally stick to the single chap as no man even if he desires her wares would normally turn round to a companion and ask him to leave as he intends going with the girl. Being curious we talked with the second girl, she was only about 17 or 18 yrs, [deleted] she [/deleted] on being asked why she was on the streets she gave the usual reasons, poverty etc.
Its an amazing fact but true that these people have their pride, they will not accept gifts of money for nothing, they maintain begging is a lower form of earning a living than the other thing!
Two years ago I was horribly disgusted and despised such women but nowadays even decent respectable soldiers

realise that nothing can stop [inserted] the [/inserted] racket so we tend to shrug our shoulders and thank God that our sisters and friends are free from the possibilities of such things.
Palestine is wonderful country for broadening the mind its so much a melting pot of Europe’s best & lofty ideas together with its continental vices. Last night we listened to perfection in music, to-night, we hear the sorrowful story of how a girl’s soul is ruined, such is mankind.
Even though it was 1 AM as wont to rest, we had a dip before breakfast on our last morning in Tel Aviv.
We reluctantly left Tel Aviv by the 930 AM train which connected with the Kantara express at Lydda where we meet the boys who did the trips around the Holy Land that we did in Oct.
They are quite pleased with their holiday and we swap yarns.
We arrive back in Cairo at 1 AM and spend the night in a hotel returning back to camp the following day
So now we are once again back to the old Army routine, it’s pretty ikesome [sic] for the first couple of days but we soon [deleted] setle [sic] [/deleted] settle down again. We find some mail awaiting us in the Sgts Mess which is a welcome consolation against our having to return from leave. Although the luxory [sic] meals we had on leave were a pleasant change, we certainly appreciate the good meals our cook turns out at the mess. Tonight for example we both enjoyed the roast beef, potatoes, marrow, onions, and spinich, [sic] followed by the fruit salad sweet. Yes we have a lot to be thankful for in this army. And that my dear Anzac concludes the trip which cost us a tenner each but well worth it. So you may now relax your imagination and step out of that uniform into skirts again and become Kitty Meyers once more.

The dinner served French fashion is most enjoyable, almost worth the 30 P.T (6/-) we each have to pay for it, almost!. We return to our seats just prior to Ismalia being expectant of the influx of passengers we pick up at this pretty Canal town, we wish to make sure of our seats. [missing word] converation [sic] with our fellow passengers we learn that the New Chums would much prefer to be [inserted] in [/inserted] England despite air-raids etc., rather than this “dusty hot [missing word] hell louse bound country” (their words). They have only been here a few weeks, both are Londoners hence they prove interesting with their first hand account of war-time London also very reassuring.
Detraining at Kantara we cross the Canal by the ferry and manage to obtain a couple of seats in the train on the other side, there is a hours wait and we then pull out of the station. We obtain a “possie” on the floor, a couple occupy the racks, two on each seat and a couple in the corridor and thus we sleep the next 5/6 hours untill [sic] dawn. We have left the Sinia [sic] desert stretch behind and are now passing through cultivated country, orange groves, vinyards [sic] etc. Pulling into a fairly large town we are greeted by the usual quota of [deleted] Ab [/deleted] Arab hawkers and newsboys selling the “Palestine Post” one also see’s a number of tall lean Aussies around the place and a springling of Transjordan & Palestine Police, the later are nearly all [deleted] ex [/deleted] British Army men and are selected for [deleted] bl [/deleted] build & intelligence thus ensuring a very efficent [sic] organisation capable of meeting the difficult task of maintaining order under sometimes trying conditions.
We note with satisfaction the cleaniness [sic] of the country compared to Egypt, even the lower class Arabs seem a much improved type. We have the train at Lydda at approx 930 AM and go along the N.A.A.F.I. where have a snack and change a few pounds Egyptian into Palestine money which is about 6D difference in the £1. We then strike a couple of chaps who are also Tel Aviv bound so we hired a taxi and [missing word] the nine or so miles in 15 mins or so passing through the Arab town of [missing word] en-route. Selecting a hotel [missing word] the sea-front
[page break]
Dump our haversacks and make for a hairdressers for a shave and generall [sic] clean up (incidently [sic] you are amazed to see girls shaving and cutting the hair of the chaps) followed by a hot shower and change at the hotel. Being lunch time we stroll along the front to one of the numerous cafe’s have a whiskey & soda and a splendid lunch. Remember me telling you about this cafe? I stayed there a few hours when I spent a night in Tel Aviv last Oct.
It is owned by Henri a young German Jew, he was studying chemistary [sic] at the Cologne university when he had to get out of the country in 1935. His wife, a Belgium girl, came out with him sacrificing her family & country to be with him. Thelma, the pianist, is a Russian who married a German only to be divorced within a couple of years. Having thus lost her nationality she was a German by marriage, but not liking the country she made a trip to the States but had to leave within six months and take refuge in Palestine. She is now earning her bread playing the piano for 5/- per day having to work a 70 hour week.
She speaks English better than I do (result of two years in a London college) and has a command of French, German, Arabic Polish, Hebrew, and of course her native Russian. Karl a fellow student of Henri in Cologne, hails from Vienna he is absorbingly interesting, having travelled through almost every country [missing word] and a few months in the States, he maintains that much as he admires the cities of Paris, Berlin, London Naples, Rome, New York Vienna is the most beautiful city he has ever been in He earns his living working in the canteen at one of the Aussie [missing word] camps. Now for a stroll around the town, how clean it looks, what a nice shopping area – not so big as [missing words] course but very chic all the same. What is that building on the right with the modern tiled dome? just one of the synogoges, [sic] that tall building is the Jewish Nater [missing words] Everywhere we
