My dear Douglas.
Yesterday I sent a cable to you “thrilled, two photos Monday, lovely autumn morning, wish well. all love. Hudson.” & now I am eagerly awaiting your reply. In one of your recent letters written in July you ask if have had all the replies [deleted] your [/deleted] [inserted] my [/inserted] cables to you. & by this time you will have got one or two letters assuring you of their safe arrival. My last letter, written to you on Thursday night, told of the safe arrival of your photos & how very delighted we are to have them. I do hope you haven’t had to sacrifice too much to pay for them. I just wish I could send you a little extra money occasionally.
Yesterday, when I sent the cable, was a most beautiful autumn day. with warm sunshine following a very heavy dew & the country looked very pleasant & fresh. Memories crowded thick & fast memories of the happy days when we rode so happily together down the Cheshire lanes. In one of your letters you say you hope we’ll have many more happy rides together. I wonder!!!
Following the lovely day yesterday today has been very poor. with rain & very heavy mist. almost like fog.
[page break]
I understand that this is a bad place for fog. & more than ever dread the winter as Dad has a long journey to the works. He has had a fortnight of night duties & it feels nice not to have to worry. I think about them for two weeks. He starts again next Tuesday & as winter approaches the hours are longer & Dad expects to have to stay at the works all day & night when his turn comes round once in eight days. I think I’ve told you before he has no actual duties – it is just a case of being on the spot in case it’s necessary.
Did you get the letter from Ted Hole? I hope you did. He wrote to [deleted] you [/deleted] [inserted] me [/inserted] such a nice letter & I have not yet replied to him. I think I told you he had been stationed in Iver but has now gone away again. It looks as tho’ [sic] John has not been moved yet. Mrs Clayton would have let me know, & think, especially if all hopes had been realized.
Grandad [sic] is going home on Tuesday. He has slept very well. & has seemed quite happy here. tho’ sic] there are a great many things not to his liking.
Now love I must say Goodnight again & hope I shall be able to write longer letters to you after next week meanwhile Dad & I send all our love. On 2nd thoughts I’ll leave my letter until morning. Perhaps there may be a letter from you. Monday morning. No luck re letters from you so I just go on hoping. At least it is (or they are) some thing to look forward to. Goodbye & God bless you always.

My dear Douglas
The time is now 7-45 a.m. & a very cold winter’s morning. When Dad went out 1/2 an hr ago “the world looked very beautiful” with a clear moon & stars shining from a cloudless sky but we still have the “Willett” summer time in operation & the mornings, for the purpose of the daily round, are very dark. Blackout time is over now at 8-53 but it is not by an [sic] means light by that time. Well love I have just been reading your letter dated September 3rd. It arrived, with five others, on December 15th, & is the last news by letter we have of you & is written from Aumale. Since then we have passed through the darkest days of winter, & the hope of Spring, with its new light & life brings much joy to us. I wonder if your Spring-time is anything like ours & if you are allowed to go out to see the return of life to all growing things. What a miracle it is! & to me it brings renewed faith & ever I am looking forward to the day when we can begin life together again. Do you ever try to picture your home-coming? & Do you ever wonder how much change we shall find in each other? Dad doesn’t alter at all. He just takes things
[page break]
as they come, in the old way. It may be, & is, comfortable to live with, under ordinary conditions. Extraordinary conditions cause the snag but why worry?? It doesn’t do any good.!!
Well love I am wondering so much if you have enough food & warm clothing? & if you all received from the Red X. the warm clothes we read about in the Chronicle. It really doesn’t seem worth while for us to send a parcel to you if it takes eight months to arrive. Auntie Una told that Joe received his Christmas parcel (he is not very far from Gordon) safely but the cake (which Mrs Fenwick made specially good in the hope it would keep better) was mouldy & the parcel was only on the way 3 months. I often wonder if you are able to listen in to the wireless programmes. Mr Cummins said you had radio at Aumale but you did not say anything about it & I wonder if I had misunderstood. I suppose you are a long way from him now. Perhaps there is another Padre near to you. I hope so. At least it is a link with civilization. About learning to play bridge!! You’ve surely made a request! I fear that the old lady would be a hopeless pupil, tho’, as no doubt you remember, Dad does know how to play. So perhaps the two of you might achieve something when opportunity offers. There are no facilities for learning here. Now love it must be Goodbye again. With all our love & thoughts & prayers from Mother & Dad.

Letter to Douglas Hudson from his parents
Description
An account of the resource
Writing first thing in morning and father has just gone out. Relates reading one of his letters from when he was in Aumale and says they have got through the dark days of winter and wonders if his spring is anything like theirs. Wonders whether he has enough warm food and clothing and if any had been received from Red Cross. Did not think it worth sending parcel if it would take 8 months to get there. Relates story of another persons parcels which only took 3 months. Discusses news from his camp including access to radio, the padre and learning to play bridge..

My dear Douglas.
This has been a very cold day with very strong east [inserted] wind [/inserted] & we have had to stay indoors. And now we are sitting beside a lovely fire, listening to a variety programme, & of course thinking of you all the time. At the moment two people are screaming away & making the most awful noise, & the audience is (or are) clapping enthusiastically, as if they enjoyed the noise. Now they are just warbling[?] about “When we were young in May” but it doesn’t appear to have been much of a tune by the way they are screaming [paragraph symbol] Well, love, the days are just passing away & all the time we are looking forward to days of joyous reunion. I only wish the time passed quickly for you too. & often when we are listening in & wonder if you are able to listen in too. I think Mr Cummin’s[?] letter said you had radio in the camp. It does seem a very long time [deleted] to [/deleted] since we had a letter from you, but I’m afraid very much mail has been lost & I wonder if you are not getting letters either. Yesterday we sent a cable to you with the usual prepaid reply & now I’m just looking forward to your message. I bought a calendar to send to you & do hope it
[page break]
reach[sic] you all right. It is such a pretty picture & will bring happiest memories of the days when we travelled so much together. Do you remember two years ago those happy afternoons in the Cheshire lanes? The weather was very much like we have had these few days. Very bright sunshine but cold when the sun has set. [paragraph symbol] Yesterday we went into town & Dad got a pair of new shoes. Did I tell you that all clothing is rationed & can only be bought by coupons? East adult is allowed 66 coupons for one year. We had to give 7 coupons for a pair of shoes. There is a very acute shortage of umbrellas now. It’s funny how things seem to disappear & then reappear. Do you remember the shortage of flash-lamp batteries? There are plenty of those now & we still have the very large one which we bought together, though I doubt if it will be much good now. They deteriorate with keeping don’t they? We not had a word from Calverley[?] since we heard that Grandad had arrived back [deleted] one/two letters] [/deleted] safely. Now it is time to prepare for supper – just the usual. Won’t it be just marvellous when we can all enjoy it together again? I will say Goodnight to you now & leave my letter open in the hope of a letter from you in the morning.
Monday morning & no luck re letters. It is dark now when Dad goes out & we don’t care much for groping about do we? Now love goodbye again. With all our love & thoughts & prayers from Mother & Dad.

My dear Douglas. Friday 24/10/41
This is a very cold day in October & I am just sitting by the fire to try to get warm before setting out to do my shopping so thought I could write a few lines to you. Not because there is anything new to tell you. It will be five weeks tomorrow since we had a letter from you. It has seemed a very long time & would have been a cause for anxiety if it were not for the assurance of well-being brought by the cables. I am going to send you one tomorrow & do hope I can tell you of letters received by morning post. We have enjoyed very pleasant Autumn weather these few days with clear skies & bright sunshine but this morning is raw & cold & we’ve just had a shower of rain. I suppose you have cooler weather, too, now, & I hope it is proving more comfortable than the intense heat mentioned in your last letter of August 28th. I often wonder what food you have now. The fruit, no doubt, is getting done, & I do hope you are able to have palatable substitutes. My grocer still brings tomatoes & says he expects to be able to supply them until Christmas.: Christmas! The name is so often in my thoughts now as it so rapidly
[page break]
approaches & though it will not be a festival of joyous reunions as in the old days the Spirit of Christmas will mean a great deal to us & we shall recall again with tender love & faith the Star of Bethlehem bringing its message of hope to each one of us. I had a very happy little surprise on Wednesday when I met Mr Exley. He was travelling in the district & just stopped the car to go into one of the mills as I was passing. He asked very kindly about you. & sent you all good wishes. It is quite an easy journey from his home to here by bus & we arranged for Mrs Exley & Barbara (four years old on Oct. 15th) to come along for a day & Mr Exley would call for them in the late afternoon. We had a nice letter from Miss Law yesterday. She said she had written to you, to the address at Le Kef. I do hope it will be sent on to you. It is not quite light when Dad leaves home in the mornings now, but he has been getting back about [deleted] a [/deleted] 5-30 to 45 each evening. He is on duty Saturday night (I dread that) & has to walk home all the way Sunday morning. It takes about an hour. Now love I’ve got nicely toasted warm so I will say Good bye to you & proceed to do my shopping. The sun keeps peeping out of the clouds so perhaps it will keep fine for me. & I quite enjoy the trip. All our love & thoughts & prayers 755052 Sgt. J. D. Hudson from Camp Militaire Mother & Dad. Annale Algerie North Africa.

My dear Douglas. Tues. 21/10/41.
We are still awaiting a letter from you. It is more than a week since we had the one dated August 28th. & the one before that dated August 8th. contained the precious snaps. which we are so delighted to have. At the moment we are listening in to a “request” programme & at these times you are very near indeed to us. This afternoon I’ve been to the pictures – never thought I should queue to see a picture but today I did – just for a few moments. There has been so much written & said about “Target for tonight”. so I went to the matinee at the Queen’s cinema this afternoon. I had the queer feeling that I had seen it all before but I know of course that the reason for that is in our affinity & in all our talks, & hopes, & fears for the future. That close association is priceless to me. & I am thankful indeed for all the dear memories which now are [underlined] mine:. This has been a very beautiful late Autumn day with marvellous visibility. & welcome sunshine. Tonight, with a very near moon we have frost & cold. It will 7 years on October 24th. since my operation & you will remember the severe wintry weather which prevailed at the time with snow at the end of the
[page break]
month. I suppose you will be having cooler weather too & I hope you will find it more comfortable than the heat mentioned in your last letter. People are beginning to talk about Christmas now. It is rather more than 9 weeks away. & I always think the Spirit of Christmas is very beautiful & inspiring. & you know that at that time our thoughts will be with you so much & we have our hopes, & our memories which mean so very much to all of us.
Wednesday morning & still no letter. What a blessing the cables are.!! It is again a very lovely morning, clear, with welcome sunshine, but very cold. I am obliged to go out there to do my shopping & on a day like this it is a real pleasure. & certainly I feel better for it. Most of the leaves are off the trees now & winter is approaching rapidly. & I’ve gone into warmer clothing already. The lounge in this house faces south & at the moment it is just flooded by sunshine. We think it will be a very warm room to use in winter. I’ve told you before that the house is on in a main road but you can guess it’s not very busy when I tell you that the milk carts etc – from the farms pass along with the men in them reading news papers while the horses just amble along & one of the men I saw appeared to be asleep. Isn’t it funny on a main road.? But nothing seems to be in a hurry here. & people just take their time getting in and out of buses, shops etc: Now love Goodbye again With all our love & 755052 Hudson thoughts & prayers Camp Militaire from Mother & Dad. Annale Algerie North Africa.

Sunday. Oct 19th/41
My dear Douglas.
It is now over a month since we had a letter from you. & we are thankful indeed that the cables which we are privileged to exchange form such a relief.
Your last letter received Aug. 28th. made a very quick journey. The other 2 August letters 2nd & 8th, were the only ones written in that month to get here. What a blessing the two snaps came through all right. It is a great joy to us to have the happy smiles of you & your friends.
Yesterday we enjoyed having Miss Law with us for a few hours. She is really very sweet & her stay with us was all too short. She arrived in a terrific deluge of rain & hail. I went to the bus to meet her & found the motor cycling outfit of happier days most effective protection against the weather.
We have 3 different bus routes from here to Burnley. One of them enables us to get on a bus just outside the gate & by changing buses at Hanle Syke ride practically to Miss Law’s house. & that was the way she returned home owing to the rapidly shortening day light with it’s
[page break
consequent early blackout. Dad is just busy filling in income tax forms. Do you know that income tax is now 10/- in the pound.? It is a very heavy drain. Well love, this morning is very dreary again with driving rain & wind, & our pretty “lake” has real waves beating on the sides. Although the weather has been so bad these few days, we don’t notice it the same from this house with its wide, open view & during these stormy days we get some very marvellous effects from light & shade.
I had a happy letter from Dorothy Preston (Pell) who is now living with her (2nd Lieutenant) husband near London. She says they are coming to her home for a few days very soon & would like to come to see us. I shall look forward to their visit & as Dorothy says we are all looking forward to the happy day when all the young people can meet again. Won’t there be some interesting stories to tell & hear?
How is the baby jackal.? No longer a baby now I suppose.! Is it still with you in camp & do it & the puppy still fraternize.?
My neighbour has just tapped on the window with fresh greens from her garden – a kind gesture which we do appreciate & which we are able to reciprocate with milk. Owing to control schemes, even in this agricultural area there is an acute shortage of milk & as you know I have usually a good supply. Now love I must say Goodbye to you once again & start my culinary duties. What joy when you are home again to share the results of my labours. Mean while all our love & thoughts & prayers
from Mother & Dad.

Tues. Oct. 14th/41
My dear Douglas.
It was a great joy to us to have your cabled message today. It is always such a relief to us to have such recent news of you. – to know that all’s well. especially so as the letters have been very irregular. We’ve only received three letters written in August 4th 8th (with two snaps) & 28th. & no news since. except the cables. which are really a great blessing & privilege. Mrs Bank’s was here when your message arrived this morning & she was so pleased to have such recent news of you. She gave me 2/- to get some little thing for you. I just can’t make people understand that I am not able to send things personally to you. but I shall probably put these varying sums of money into a book pool & try to get two or three across to you or still more likely place the money for your ultimate benefit in & from the usual channel. Well love I can still write to you of this beautiful countryside with lovely tints of Autumn giving us never failing pleasure.
During last night we had deluges of rain & today everything has looked so “washed” & clean & fresh. Except for the tidying up our
[page brake]
gardening days for this year are at an end. What joy & content they have brought to us!!
I’ve told you in a previous letter that we are hoping to plant an apple tree at the beginning of November. We shall tend it lovingly & carefully, hoping always that the time is not far distant for the joyous reunion which means life to us. It is a year on Friday since Dad finished at Prestwick. & for many weeks we were sleeping on the kitchen floor. [inserted] for safety. [/inserted] We often compare those disturbing conditions with the life here, and are thankful indeed for the respite which means rest & peace. We are expecting Miss Law on Saturday. I asked her to come for the day but she has evacuees from Worthing living with her. & Saturday morning is a very busy time for her, she says. I am looking forward to seeing her. Her outlook on life is unusual & inspiring.
Mrs Clayton asked, on Saturday if you had received her letters. She said she had written, but I wonder!! Did I tell you in Sunday’s letter that she wants us (Dad & I) [inserted] or me) [/inserted] to go stay for a weekend. ? Can you imagine anything less compatible than the two men folk??
Well I can scarcely keep my eyes open so will say Goodnight to you again with all our love & thoughts & prayers. from Mother & dad.

Sunday Oct. 12th/41.
My dear Douglas.
It seems a very long time since we had a letter from you & I’m always wondering how you are getting along. Yesterday Dad & I went to Manchester. Dad had to go to the College of Technology so I did one or two little errands including a visit to Mr Hazel[?] & I called for Mrs Clayton & we met Dad at the old spot & had lunch together. Mrs Clayton seemed to enjoy the change & she was not quite so full of groans & grumbles as usual. She seemed rather troubled that things are not too good with John who is still at the same spot & very disappointed. You will know from a previous letter that Dorothy was married on August 12th but it seems she didn’t marry the soldier after all. Mrs Clayton says the ‘groom [deleted] had [/deleted] [inserted] has [/inserted] a good post at the B.B.C. & they are living in a flat at Watford. I wrote to Dorothy at 9 Heywood St. about two weeks ago & sent her a dainty[?] marmalade jar but have not heard from her & am not surprised now I know she is not living there. Mrs Clayton says John has taken Marion in to tea on two ocassions[sic], so it looks as though all is happy & bright again. Funny isn’t it? Dad saw Mr Tatham[?] yesterday. His business is
[page break]
suffering rather badly & he is anticipating a full-time post in the A.T.S. – a post which seems to me some what strenuous. [paragraph symbol] He called at Sherratt & Hughes to try to arrange for two or three books to be sent to you but they were quite off-hand about it, so we just left it & I am going to see what I can do at Burnley. We’ve been wondering if it really is worth trying to get some books to you if the journey takes so many months, but we did just want you to have a gift from home if possible. Some one has recently mentioned that it is only ten weeks to Christmas, so we begin to wish the time to pass quickly away & we can look forward to Spring-time again. Life is just looking forward all the time isn’t it? Everyone seems to think how splendid that you are now out of the terrible war-fare. I know just how weary you do become of inactivity, but you have life & hope[?] which gives great cause for thankfulness from all of us. [paragraph symbol] Today Dad & I have been working in the garden in lovely Autumn sunshine – we cannot expect many days like it again this year. Early this morning we had white frost, & tonight again is very cold, & winter is definitely not very far away. I often wonder if you have been able to continue your boxing & do hope so. Now that the weather is cooler you will have resumed the physical training, walks, & games & the time will not drag quite so slowly away. Now goodnight love. With all our love & thoughts & prayers. Mother & Dad.

Thursday Oct. 8th/41
My dear Douglas.
I have been so busy sewing this evening & it is so warm that I didn’t notice the fire dying out & now I’ve been trying to coax it into blaze. In the old days no doubt I should have stuck a dozen or so matches in amongst the dying embers but not so today for matches are very precious indeed & Dad’s petrol lighter & the pilot light on my gas oven have both to work overtime. Now I’m wondering if you still have warm weather - at any rate it will not be so trying & difficult to bear as in the July & August days & if you have facilities for making a fire when the cool days of winter arrive. Strange how people worry about you in the heat of Africa. A letter from Miss Law a few days ago (the first we’ve had since we left [one indecipherable word]) expressed concern for you & did hope you did not suffer unduly. Auntie Lizzie wrote from Dewsbury & asked me to specially send to you love & best wishes for a speedy & safe return & also 5/-. I am going to try to send you one or two books if possible & will use the money with [inserted] on in [/inserted] the fund for the purpose. It is a very great relief that we have the cables as the letters
[page break]
are not coming through very well. August letters to date 2nd 8th with photos, & one nearly a fortnight ago dated 28th. & I’m afraid I should become very anxious if we [deleted] d [/deleted] could not exchange messages by cable. As I’ve previously told you it is always a very great joy & comfort to have your cabled messages. We are enjoying remarkable Autumn weather & today I walked through one of the pretty national parks here & had the unusual experience of walking amongst falling leaves - leaves of all shades & shapes - & the effect was almost enchanting - a very different world from the streets with rows & rows of houses & factories. Grandad was very interested in the long straight streets here he had not seen anything like them before. Yesterday I went to Cornholme to visit Mrs Banks & found very little change after very many years. So very many land - marks stirred memories - as ever - grave & gay. Mrs Banks is coming here for the day next Tuesday. She is just the same as ever - very sweet & kindly & I shall enjoy having her to visit me. Well love I will say Goodnight now as it is getting late & I have little interesting news for you. We had fog yesterday evening but rain cleared it all away before we [inserted] were [/inserted] up this morning. Winter seems to be coming along rapidly with black-out time from 7pm to 7am & how we dread it!! Dad will be out again tomorrow night. The weeks seem to pass very quickly I only wish it was the same for you. With all our thoughts & love from Mother & Dad.

Sunday Oct. 5/41
My dear Douglas.
We were delighted to have a letter from you yesterday, 28/8/41, & about 2 hours later your cable arrived & brought much relief. It was dated, 3rd, so it looks as though the delay had been from this end, last Saturday. But now we have had such recent news from you again we are much more content. What a boon these cables are! Especially lately when the mail is not too regular & our only letters in three weeks are the one 8/8/41 containing the precious snaps (what a mercy that came safely) & the one of yesterday. I’m glad you got Ted Hale’s letter. He told me he had written to you & I’ve not written to thank him yet. Tho’ I intend to do so today. The letter must have come air-mail. It made a quick journey. Ted didn’t say if he had sent the letter air mail or ordinary. Your letter of yesterday does not contain stamps of any kind, but in the top right hand corner the letters S.M. in very large type blue & of course the censors stamps. Well love we are pleased to know that the weather is cooling off a little for you now. We are puzzled by your remark “normal or natural taking of the
[page break]
sun now being denied”. Perhaps a previous letter which I have not received has told of restrictions in the exercise which you appeared to enjoy. I often wondered how you were able to play such strenuous games in the intense heat. Yesterday here was a most beautiful day & after lunch Dad & I set out for a long walk which was somewhat curtailed by cows cows everywhere & you know I’m just terrified of them. It is very beautiful country around here & we are thankful indeed for the peace & beauty of it all perhaps all the more noticeable after the experience of a year ago. At the moment I am listening to a radio programme of South American music “down Mexico way” & it brings memories & thoughts of [one indecipherable word] We will very often think of you & us don’t you think? We are amazed & very interested to learn from the Chronicle this morning definite news of your camp at Aumale & how the British residents at Tangier are providing winter clothing for you all while supplies reach you from the Red Cross in London & we are thankful indeed to read such good news. Now love it is Goodbye again & God bless you always all our love Mother & Dad

My dear Douglas,
I couldn’t tell you just how I felt on Tuesday morning when your letter, 8/8/41, arrived with two photos enclosed. But at any rate I can tell you that I was thrilled indeed. Thank you so much for taking the trouble to get them. It is such joy to look upon a recent photo of you, & also a joy to see so little change in your appearance. I expected to see you looking older but it is just the same dear face ad ever, & it is with deepest reverence & gratitude that I say Thank God that you are still alive & well. It is exactly a year ago tonight since the telegram arrived from the Air Ministry telling that you were safe in Tunisia & you already know what that has meant to me. To revert to the photos, if you had not told me in previous letters that you had put on a lot of weight I should have said you had not altered the least little bit. It is grand to see you looking happy, with your friends.
When your letter was written you were rather anxious at not having letters but about that time there seemed to be more than the usual disturbance & probably many of them were lost. We now seem to get all the cables safely & as
[page break]
you say they are a very happy link. The reply which you sent on July 1st was received here on July 15th & probably you have already got my letter telling you this.
Grandad is still here & seems quite happy & fairly well. This afternoon we have been to one of the parks, (there are 3 in Nelson), & it was a very pleasant little outing. The dahlias were very beautiful, & it was quite and easy journey as we could go by bus from home to the park gates.
Auntie Dorothy came again on Tuesday & seemed very happy (for once) about everything. Next Tuesday I expect she will come to go back with Grandad, then perhaps I shall have rather more time to answer some of your previous letters. There is so much to say & so much that I want to ask you even though the replies do take a very long time. Well love I am going to say Goodnight to you now as I am rather later than usual. I am sending a cutting from The Guardian announcing Don Chadwick’s wedding at Cheadle. I hope the censor will let you have it. Just in case he doesn’t Don was married at Cheadle on Sept, 20th to Heather Kenward. Did you know about the lady? Now to close I send all our love & very many thanks again for the precious photos. You’re certainly not “chubby! to me. Think they are pulling your leg. I like your socks!!!

My dear Douglas,
I am very late with my letter this time & am hoping it will not mean a big gap in your mail. Grandad arrived on Tuesday & I have not had much leisure since. I gave him breakfast in bed feeding him like a baby then at 11 am, I help him to dress. After that he does quite well, & as the weather has been fine he has kept having a little walk up the garden & one afternoon we managed a little further – up the hill. We hope to have a little bus ride but I doubt whether that may be a wise departure. He came for a week, but has decided to stay a little longer. I was delighted to have your cable last Wednesday. It only took one day & as you know I am always so thrilled to have such a recent message from you. On Wed. next Sept 24th will be the anniversary of the message that you were safe, interned in Tunisie. You know just what that meant to me, just received life & always the thought of glad reunion gives me strength & courage. It seems a long time since I had letters from you but I don’t worry now as I used to as I realize the many difficulties involved in their journeying. Just now I am
[page break]
writing to you & listening to community hymn singing from a R.A.F. camp. The July letter from your Padre, Mr Cummin, told how he had been at camp with you & that you had all joined in a sing song. So now when ever I hear music from the Forces my thoughts go out to you. Though I might add that they are never very far away from you & your letters & cables are read over & over again. You ask about the stamps, yes I have kept them – I have every letter you’ve written since the journey to Scotland on Nov 10th or was it the 11th – midnight anyway wasn’t it? Perhaps it as well that you are not allowed enough paper to start arguing. It would involve a great deal of concentration of which I am not yet capable – tho’ perhaps a little better than I was when we came here. Are you able to listen in now? I hope you can listen to the questions, answered by the Brains Trust, on Sunday afternoon at 5-15 p.m. There are ideas to argue if ever you want any more new ones. Today is a special day of prayer for members of the R.A.F. – as if that is necessary. Always “in the morning, & at the going down of the sun” we do remember the dear lads to whom so many owe so much. On Wednesday Sept. 24th is Harry Bowers birthday, & I must write to his mother. She is so brave & faithful & still believes that Harry will return. She has the idea that he is suffering from loss of memory. Poor Soul! She’s very sweet & did seem to enjoy being here some weeks ago. Now love it is Goodnight again with all loving thoughts for our own dear member of the R.A.F. & for all others known & unknown.
Mother & Dad.

My dear Douglas,
I hope that when you get this letter you will have previously had one from Dad posted yesterday. We had six letters from you last week, written in June & early July, & it is about 3 weeks since we had a letter dated Aug. 2nd. It is strange how the length of time before delivery varies, but it is very wonderful really that we do receive the letters safely tho’ as you say they are somewhat out of sequence. [indecipherable words] letters written from May 29th to mid July & now I have dated each envelope which makes more interesting reading. I am surprised to learn of the very changeable weather, but it is a good thing you do get the cooler evenings, otherwise I imagine that the heat would become unbearable. We feel to be rapidly approaching winter here, with black out time 7-50, & tonight it is quite cold – clear frosty cold with a beautiful sunset. It reminds me of a little walk we once took together through Alder Forest Park. Today I’ve been busy changing beds round ready for Grandad’s visit tomorrow. He is coming all
[page break]
The way by taxi & I do hope it will be a nice day as it is a very pleasant ride. I am still eagerly waiting for your photograph. Tonight an appeal from the Red X has been broadcast asking parents & relatives who have received photographs from prison camps to send them – on loan to the Red X organisation to help to keep records. What a marvellous work it is! I read in yesterday’s Chronicle that Sergeant Pilot George W. Fenton who figured in the film “Target for tonight” is reported missing. Fenton is an Old Mancunian who was twice boxing champion of his school a well known amateur swimmer & was a full-back for Broughton Park. He took up flying after a football accident. Did you know that? I remember you did not have [indecipherable words] in the Manchester Swimming Club days. I was so pleased to learn you are persevering with your boxing, & am just longing for news of you since August 2nd. I’ve only sent two letters to via Tangier. Do you wish me to continue to send some that way occasionally? I wonder if you’ve ever written to Jaffe’s. Do you think it might be wise to keep in touch with them occasionally – or don’t you? Well love the time to say Goodbye is here again. Last year at this time days just dragged wearily & hopelessly away. It is such a joy to me to look forward always to days of glad reunion again. How is the baby jackal? Hope you won’t keep it too long. Goodnight & God bless you always.
All our love
