DATE 15th Oct./ 42 1942
My dear Douglas,
As you suggested that the news may reach you more quickly on this Special Air Mail form here is a trial letter which on the ordinary paper would be No 89. We were very delighted to have a letter from you on Tues. dated September 10th. It had come by Air Mail & bore stamps value 7 francs 50 cents, one 5 francs, one 1 franc, & one 1 franc 50 cents. The letter by registered post cost 11 francs. Of course I am keeping all the letters & no doubt the stamps will provide much interest in future. Today I have been to Burnley & have bought 2 pairs of socks & one shirt with collar attached. Next week I intend to get your parcel off. I was interested to learn that the Red X had added some little gifts to my first parcel. I wonder what they were. I have told you in a previous letter that the method of sending parcels to laghouat has been alterred [sic] & I imagine it will take longer to reach you but we must just hope for the best. I had a very happy little letter from John’s Mollie (Sheldrake). Did I tell you that Mrs Clayton thought the engagement would be announced quite soon & she seems quite pleased about it. I shall be writing for Dorothy’s birthday on November 5th & will tell her how pleased you were to have her letters. Goodbye now love . It does seem a very short letter. More news about your parcel next letter. Should be glad to learn you received the 2nd one all our love Mother & Dad.

My dear Douglas
This is a pleasant Autumn morning & I am wondering if it is cooler & pleasant with you too. We have reluctantly bid Goodbye to summer now. The lawns look damp & are covered with worm casts which means that mowing is [deleted] at [/deleted] almost at an end for this year. I have grown some Canterbury bells from seed & on Tuesday I planted them “into their flowering quarters” (says she optimistically). There are one or two very lovely gardens around here, tended like children by elderly retired gentlemen. They seem to be quite tickled by my enthusiasm & always stop to have a word in passing. The Canterbury bells seemed to be rather an idea to them I don’t think they had just realised the possibilities. Do you remember what a lovely display Grandad Hudson used to have at Chestnut Grove? I believe Dad thinks mine will compete favourably. I seem to be always writing gardens & books to you but they are my cheifest joys in these days of enforced separation. We have some beautiful thrushes in the gardens & I never see one without recalling the one on the gate in the Cheshire Lane. Weren’t we both thrilled with it?
[page break]
I wonder if you are recalling too, those pleasant days three years ago, when we wandered happily along the lanes gathering blackberries. In your letter of July 22nd you wonder if you will want to settle down around home when you return to it. I don’t think so. The present abnormal conditions are only a phase which will pass & pleasure in travel will return bringing no doubt greater realisation of joy & blessing. I often wonder if you & John will resume the old happy relationship. John says yes. I hope so too. You will both bring into the association new thoughts & ideas & a much wider outlook. I am looking forward to seeing John tomorrow. The last [deleted] night [/deleted] [inserted] time [/inserted] was when we were at Kensal & he brought Eric, from London, along to see me, one morning shortly after we heard that you were safe. It must be nearly two years. I am eagerly awaiting more letters. The last ones July 27 - 21 - 22 in that order. I am hoping to receive snaps too. In a previous letter I told you I had been able to buy a sponge [inserted] to send to you [/inserted] & now consider I was very lucky to get one cheap. There was one in a chemist’s window in town yesterday 13/11. In happier days we could have bought a similar article for 1/-. Before this letter reaches you I hope to have sent another next - of - kin parcel & will try to get shirts with collars attached. Goodbye now once again. With all our love & thoughts & prayers from Mother & Dad.

Writes that summer is over and mention planting seeds. Mentions that there are some nice gardens locally and that their garden would compete with grandad's. Garden is her chief joy which is why she mentions it in many letters. Wonders about the future and relationships. Catches up with news of family and friends. Eagerly awaiting his next letters.

My dear Douglas.
It was a great joy to us to have two letters from you yesterday. The dates were July 21st & 22nd & they acknowledged the snaps which have apparently given you pleasure. The one of me sitting in the deck chair is quite absurd. The camera has surely lied this time by making an old lady into a young one. The picture doesn’t show the white hair & wrinkles, but they are there alright a very forceful reminder of the flight of time. I have gained a lot of weight but Dad seems to go thinner every week. At present he is working extra time & that worries me, as I do feel he has enough to do in normal hours. To revert to the letters it was two weeks ago that we received one letter dated July 27th on a Thursday & on the following Saturday the post-card [inserted] dated July 31st [/inserted] with greetings from “the post-man” & later the cable, which messages brought much pleasure. It is grand to learn that Red Cross supplies have begun to arrive again &O that you have got a small amount of fuel on which to boil water for tea-making. I can well imagine how much you enjoy your cups of tea. I should miss that [inserted] or them [/inserted] more than anything. By ration is very severe 2 ozs each per week & I am thankful to a few people
[page break]
who do not use even that & so let me buy it from them. Yesterday I had a letter from Mrs Clayton with the news that John is coming home on Wednesday & would I try to go for a day while he is home so I shall go either Thursday or Friday & shall then be able to give you a little news of him. Presently I shall write to Mrs Bowers. It would have been Harry’s birthday tomorrow, Sept 30th. He was just that little younger than you wasn’t he? You mention sleeping out - of – doors & I am wondering what you sleep on. Do you drag your bed outside or just lie on the ground? It doesn’t sound very comfortable. The field of oats, across the way (which I have mentioned to you before) was cut yesterday but it does not look typical English harvest as it is very green. Much of it is in stooks but some lying on the ground as though it is useless & it does seem such a pity. We have not had any rain since I wrote to you last but every thing seems to be so thoroughly soaked & we have heavy morning & evening mist with about four hours sunshine. The birds are beginning to come for food again. It is some weeks since I first saw my very tame robin. I am hoping soon to hear of the safe arrival of your second “next – of – kin parcel” parcel & am wondering whether to send another pair of shoes or wait to see if the others are all right. My dear Douglas.
It is just two years ago today that I was the happiest person in the world. Two years ago on a Thursday night at 10-30 p.m. a telegram arrived as follows “Your son 755052 Sergeant Hudson now reported interned in Tunisia. Letter follows.” You can imagine, can’t you, just what the message meant to us. I remember how, soon after the messenger had gone the Servians came in in their car. Dad hurried out to tell the good news to them & instead of going home they stayed with us until 1-30. We were all very excited & Mr Servian kept saying he didn’t recognize me. “Mrs Hudson, you look twenty years younger”!! And as I told you, the good news brought a new lease of life & ever since, I’ve just kept on looking forward to your return home. We didn’t dream that the time would be so long. Two years – which I know often bring you an almost unbearable feeling of frustration & uselessness. And we just keep on hoping & praying for peace & reunion & a return to a more normal condition of life.
Our last news from you was the cable received last Saturday. By post earlier the same morning came the post-card with the greeting from the “post-man” which gave us much
[page break]
pleasure, & on the previous Thursday we had the letter dated July 17th. I am eagerly awaiting more news & looking forward to having more snaps. I am sorry we cannot send you more photos at present, as I have told you previously films are quite unobtainable.
The sun is shining this morning & the countryside looks fresh & clean after much rain. Our gardening for this year is almost over – it’s just a case of tidying up for the winter & I keep doing a bit at a time. We have just got a few roses & lupins, & the chrysanthemums are in bud but I’m afraid they are not going to bloom [inserted] We have a few flowers [/inserted] I must have put them in too late. It is very bleak & cold up here. Vegetation seems to be two or three weeks more backward than in the South & the field of corn just across the way is ripening so very slowly & gives the impression that it will not be much use. Dad is working extra time for a few days & I always feel a bit worried when he has extra duties. He is very thin but keeps on saying he never feels tired, so he must feel better than he looks. He has become very vain & spends a lot of time admiring himself in the mirrors. He evidently doesn’t “see himself as ithers [sic] see him”. Poor man!!! Have got a good book just now, “Jerry of the Islands” – another dog story by Jack London. Strangely enough although it is an old book it is quite topical being a story of a trading ship engaged among the Soloman Islands. Conditions on the Islands were foul then. For the sakes of our men it is hoped civilisation has brought about some improvement. Goodbye now love A few days nearer the greatest day of all. As ever our love & thoughts & prayers.

My dear Douglas.
Since writing to you last I have been very delighted to have your post-card = picture of Laghouat dated July 31st & your cable Laghouat 18th both received here on Sat. Sept. 19th. It is very wonderful news that my letters to you arrive in perfect sequence. It was a good idea to number them & makes a little more interest. Most of your letters reach us, but not quite in sequence. For instance your letter of July 17th arrived one Saturday then on the Monday we had ten dating from June 5th to July 14th then on the Thursday one dated June 17th. Last Thursday I just had one dated July 27th & since then just keep on looking for more.
It was good to have your cheery post-card with “Best wishes from the Post-man”. We heartily reciprocate the greetings [inserted] to the Postman [/inserted] & now eagerly await the letters giving more news of the post-man. It is a great relief to learn of the splendid help given to you by the different branches of the Red Cross Organization & I sincerely hope that the visit of the lady representatives will bring better conditions to you all. Rain is falling again this morning. It certainly has been a very poor summer & still we learn from radio & newspapers that the harvest is a bumper one. It is strange how different the weather has
[page break]
in the South when, = in these days of swift moving transport, = the distance between is so small. This morning our “lake” is nearly empty and the outlook from the dining room window not half so pleasant. It is only a very small reservoir & is filled from a larger one higher up the valley, but we do not understand why sometimes it is almost full for days then overnight it empties many feet lower. On these occasions our neighbour Mr Massey calls it “the black hole of Calcutta”. Yesterday my coalman arrived with 10 bags of coal – a most welcome visitor. I think I told you that the dealers wife told me we are to be rationed to five bags a month until the coal situation eases a lot. Here am I sitting writing without fire on this cold wet morning in September & more than ever now our maxim is “Early to bed early to rise.” By the time this letter reaches you the days will be much cooler for you all & I do hope supplies of fuel will be forth-coming Am glad you have tea. It would be real hardship to me without tea. My neighbour Miss Chester brought me 4 ozs last night & Mrs Banks let me have 4 ozs last week. Mrs Horne (Maurice’s mother) posted your letter from Cornholme. Mrs Banks took me up to see their [inserted] Horne’s [/inserted] cottage home up on the hill at [indecipherable word]. Do you remember the little farm just on the left? It is very nice but I don’t want to go back to Cornholme. Marsh-brook at Church Stretton would be better for me. Goodbye now love. As ever all our love & thoughts & prayers.

Thursday a.m. Sept. 17th. 42
My dear Douglas.
After a day or two of nice Autumn weather we are back again to cold & wind & rain. It seems really wintry with black-out at 7.45 p.m. & when we get up in the morning. I can well imagine that you will welcome the cooler weather & do not suppose black out will make any difference to you. It was a great relief to learn from your letters written towards the end of June that you had got more food parcels from the Canadian Red Cross. I told you they sent me your card acknowledging the parcel you received from them last November. I have intended to write to them before this, but writing has seemed very difficult lately. A letter from Mrs Clayton on Tuesday wonders why she has not heard from me, & I owe letters to everybody including John who wrote such a nice letter at the beginning of August. You will have had my letter long ago telling that at last his ambition had been realized & that he was now living under much happier conditions. Mrs Clayton's letter told that Bill had been to see her. He is now invalided out of the Army & has a good post in some pay department. Of course the tale may not be quite accurate. You know what she is./. [sic] It is strange to see all the factory chimneys smoking after the long weekend holiday. They do
[page break]
not really improve the landscape, but no doubt play a very useful part in the lives of the community I have just this moment received a letter from you dated July 26th. "It is about four days since I last wrote to you & then I sent two letters on two consecutive days [inserted] acknowledging [/inserted] nos. 53 & 55 containing snaps". Since writing that you "have received two more letters, & snaps, of you both at the wheel & just noticable [sic] are the deadly straight lines of the mower showing that you still maintain the art of uniformity when it comes to cutting the lawn." Now what exactly does that mean. - that uniformity ends with mowing.? I [sic] afraid it's the end of the snaps for the present at any rate as films are quite unobtainable. I am glad you have got a roll & portioned them so evenly. I shall just look forward all the time to having the photos & your precious letters./. [sic] The world looks very beautiful at this moment. The rain has ceased & great low clouds are rolling away showing clear bright blue & white. The sun is struggling to get through & the strong light on our few late roses & the reflection in the shimmering "lake" is very lovely. Thank God for delight in simple things. Tears are taboo for the duration but they were very near the top as I read of your dream. I don't want it to come true, love. As you say the impression would be very deep & so many things burnt today that we feel that capacity is almost reached. I am going to Cornholme today. Mrs Banks is going to alter a coat for me. So Goodbye for another short while
With all our love & thoughts & prayers. Mother & Dad

191 Halifax Road,
Nelson Lancs/. [sic]
England.
Monday. Sept. 14th./42
My dear Douglas.
This is a beautiful Autumn morning, with mist, & a rising sun which gives promise of a glorious day. We have been very fortunate with weather for our holidays this year. The June holiday was the best weather of the year & now this weekend (after a very poor spell of cold & wet) is grand again.
On Saturday I went into Nelson & sent the following message by cable. "Delighted cable received eighth. Twelve letters June 5th to July 17th. Dads holiday weekend. Staying home. Pleasant Autumn day All love Hudson." As I keep on Saying [sic] these cables are priceless to me. It would seem a very very long time to wait from July 17th for news of you. Some of your letters (June 15th & 17th) brought anxiety too, but I am trying to develop a strong belief in fatalism. Some-times I feel absolutely bewildered & very distressed but the mood passes & I realize that in quietness & confidence is my strength. I wonder, if, when you come back we shall still live in this small industrial town. The country around is very beautiful & with congenial companionship I would be very happy. Last night our neighbour called to ask us to go for a walk. Of course Dad wouldn't - refuse
[page break]
to go with him. I loved it, but how I did [one indecipherable word] of you & wish we could have [two indecipherable words] beauty together. On Saturday morning Dad had a letter from Mr Mackenzie of Messrs Jaffe & [underlined] Sons [/underlined] asking for your address. He said they had formed "a staff-comforts for troops & prisoners of war fund" & wished to know if you had any special desires & what brand of cigarettes you would prefer. So Dad told him your comforts would be books, socks, & soap, & tobacco for pipe-smoking, & your favourite cigarettes were Capstan, Players & Churchman. The letter was forwarded from Kersal. Although Jaffe's have this address, or should have, as Dad wrote to them from here acknowledging their Christmas gift. I suggested in a recent letter that you wrote to Mr Allan. It will be as well to keep in touch don't you think./. [sic] Well love I keep on reading your last lot of letters & do hope you are now enjoying cooler weather. Perhaps you will tell me the name of your friend from Wales. I like to picture the different boys. No doubt the pictures are all wrong but they bring some little interest until the time arrives for which we live & you can tell us of your strange life & adventures. Three years ago just at this time we were spending such happy hours together rambling in the Cheshire Lanes. There are no brambles around here no doubt the factory smoke has destroyed what [deleted] the [/deleted] bushes there were long ago. Goodbye now love, for a few more days - always nearer to the greatest day of all. Our love & thoughts - & prayers are ever with - you. Mother & Dad

Friday Sept. 11th/42
My dear Douglas.
I have not received any news from you since the cable on Tuesday a.m. The latest letter written in the last batch of 12 was [inserted] (is) [/inserted] dated July 17th. That was a good journey as that letter arrived two weeks ago & now, as ever, I am eagerly looking for more. In one of your letters you ask about the cables sent in June. I have one dated Laghouat 31st [inserted] 31st May [/inserted] received here on June 2nd. It is the one acknowledging your birthday greetings from everybody. The next one is Laghouat June 29th received here 30th as follows “Delighted cable 6th, regret delay in replying. Pleased my letters are arriving, well, all love. Hudson”. The next one is also dated Laghouat 29th & arrived here on July 4th. So it would seem that the one you sent on your own at the beginning of June did not get through. We are thankful indeed that so many do come through. It would seem a very long time indeed since July 17th the date of your latest letter. My thoughts are very often with Mr & Mrs Hole. Their anxiety must be terrible as they have no news whatever of Ted since just after Christmas. Last time I wrote to you, on Monday it was a dreary wet day. The weather brightened in the afternoon & since then we have had beautiful Autumn weather with sunshine almost all day long.
[page break]
We are hoping it will remain like this for Dad’s little holiday which starts tomorrow noon until Wednesday evening. The Works start again on Thursday. We are not going away. We did wonder whether to go to Leeds but after last weeks news re Jerry’s visit we thought we were better to stay at home & as you can imagine travelling is really unpleasant at least our last return journey was & we said “never again” until conditions become normal. I did intend to ask Grandad to stay with us again but we are realizing more than ever the terrible disturbance afoot & I could not make him comfortable. This morning I have received my egg ration, two, one each per month. It will be a month on Monday since the coal man brought me four bags of coal. That will be my worst difficulty. I am, as you know, such a cold creature. As you suggest it would be more comfortable all round if your marvellous sunshine could be divided I suppose you will have fairly recent news of the old country. We are beginning to miss the motor traffic from the roads now. A young couple just near us are very enthusiastic cyclists & they think conditions on the road now are grand. So it really is “an ill wind that blows nobody good.” Now love I am just going on my shopping expedition. I go early & get back before the buses become too crowded. Dad has had some difficulty in his homeward travelling lately. So many people who formerly used their own cars now use the buses. Goodbye now love as ever all our love & thoughts & prayers. Monday Sept. 7th/42
My dear Douglas. I wrote to you last on Friday Sept. 4th just after Dad had gone on fire-watching duty. We were all very thankful for a peace-ful [sic] night. I acknowledged, on Fri. your telegram for Dad’s birthday, which arrived, as I told you, on Sept. 1st, by post on the Tues. morning. It is Dad’s 4th birthday during war-time & with all our hearts we sincerely hope by the time for the next one, peace will be with us again. I cannot imagine what message I sent to you on June 12th did not meet with the censor’s approval & have no recollection of writing anything that may be of interest or value to Jerry in his desperate situation as I do not possess any such knowledge. We are all still anxiously awaiting news of Ted Hole. The Japanese have not yet allowed a list of prisoners to come through. My thoughts are very often with Mr & Mrs Hole. It is a long time for them to be waiting without any kind of news since just after Christmas.
Well love I don’t seem to have anything of interest to write about. We have had a very inclement week-end & have not even had the opportunity to mow the lawns. It was fine for about 4 hours this morning but at 1 p.m. the trickle begun again & it is carrying on the good work at 3 p.m. Hope it fairs up for Dad’s home-coming. We spent
[page break]
most of the week-end reading. I got a jolly good book (accidently) from the library. Thought I had picked up something light & fluffy by Olive Wadsley & when I got home found it was a good & interesting & instructive by Helen Waddell a story of Roman Catholicism & I like it. Here’s a quotation, “Remember that in any place where a good many men are living together, good & evil are found! If place could help, never had angels fallen from Heaven, - nor man sinned in Paradise. A wise wind keeps its own mastery”. Dad had a letter from Uncle Jim for his birthday & Uncle seems to be thoroughly enjoying his retirement. He says he is much better in health which is a good thing. Auntie has had a very trying time with Ken. So no doubt Jim will help to keep things going more smoothly. I have no news of John since his birthday when he was at Bedale & enjoying the beautiful country between spells of hard work. Strange that you two never fancied the Yorkshire Wolds in the old motor-cycling days. I hope your next letters will give the result of the Bridge tournament. It would be good news that you had been able to recommence journalistic activities. They did help to pass the time. Black-out time here is 8-17 now & it feels very near to winter. You will be thankful to have cooler days but I am dreading the cold as our coal supply is very inadequate. Shall have to go to bed to keep warm. All our love & prayers. Mother & Dad

Friday. Sept. 4th/42
My dear Douglas.
I have just bid Dad good-night as he has set out on his fire-watching duties so thought I would write to you as you have been ever in my thoughts since the last batch of letters arrived – ten on Monday, one on Thursday dated June 17th & one last Saturday dated July 17th. It has been a great joy to me to have all these letters but they also brought a degree of sorrow & anxiety. The latter [inserted] later [/inserted] letters give the impression that you are once again enjoying ? normal conditions for which I am more than thankful. It was grand to have your cable announcing the arrival, intact, of your first next-of-kin parcel & I am glad you are able to “cultivate” the Lifebuoy habit. Today I have been delighted to get a sponge which I hope to include in your next parcel. It is not a very good one (as I told you in my last letter they are almost unobtainable) but I thought it might help you to enjoy your “dips” even more than usual. It is strange to think of the water shortage when we have had so much more than the normal supply all summer. From what I hear the wet weather has been just in the North. Holiday-makers who have been south (& there are still a few) tell of days & days of uninterrupted sunshine while here
[page break]
we have had hardly a day when rain has not fallen at some time. Today has not been too bad, bright with little gleams of sunshine & also “little drops of water” at intervals. We have a lot of wind here up on the hill, which is rather fatal to tall growing plants. One of my beautiful chrysanthemums was broken at the week-end. I was very sorry as I was very proud of my fine plants. This morning I had a post-card from Auntie Maud & Eileen who are “having a restful holiday at Blackpool” much to Dad’s disgust. Auntie asks very kindly about you. I am wondering who was the friend who shared your “chambre” & your joke about the underpants. Was it Tony, Jimmy, Eric, or someone whose name I do not know? It was funny about your large calendar arriving after ten months. Was it broken or did it arrive in good condition. I wonder where it had been all that long time. It would be good to hear that you had got some of the other parcels too. You mention sending parcels more frequently via the Red X. This does not seem to me very practicable, following a long communication from them in May giving a lot of particulars & instructions about quarterly next-of-kin parcels to internees in Vichy controlled North Africa. We feel we must try to conform to rules & regulations but you may be sure the next quarterly parcel will be sent in good time. Let me know by cable if there is anything you specially need. Now Goodnight love. I know how much your thoughts will be with us tomorrow on Dad’s birthday. Always all our love & thoughts & prayers from Mother & Dad

Thurs. Sept. 3rd/42
My dear Douglas.
This morning I received what might truly be described as the most important letter of the last batch of twelve. One last Saturday (strangely enough the latest date, July 17th) ten on Monday & one today dated June 17th which confirms what I had read between the lines of the letter of June 15th. I daren’t comment – I want so much that you receive all my letters – but it was a great joy to learn from a later letter of your new friend from Wales. May you find peace & happiness in companionship. Who is the friend who shares the joke about the underpants? Is it Jimmy, Tony, or Eric or one I do not know by name. It is a great mercy that anything can help to develop a sense of humour under those circumstances. Before I close this letter I will count how many I’ve had from Laghouat. You say about 40 up to June 17th. Since then I’ve been delighted to have many more. I remember the last batch brought 23 from July 11th to August 15th. I was thrilled to bits. This letter of June 17th tells how eagerly you await your small parcel of soap & towels & your cable of August 18th announced their safe arrival & since then your [inserted] other [/inserted] cable told of the Lifebuoy habit & I’m pleased we can add just a little to your comfort. I do hope the next parcel reaches you safely as it is a nice
[page break]
one with soft underwear shoes size 7 a pair of thickish service socks which I fear may be too thick for your requirements unless you do have really cold weather. I saw a sponge in the market yesterday – just one, but quite an ordinary one such as we should pay 6d for in peace time & it was 4/6 so I left it there. The man said it was worth twice as much as it was impossible to buy them today. So I’m afraid we’ll just have to do without.
Well love I wonder if your thoughts have been like mine these few days. I’ve just lived over again those 3 days after the R.A.F.V.R. were called to service. The night of September 1st when all reservists were called by radio to report to Headquarters. The Saturday morning when we said Goodbye again thinking you really were going that time. The Sunday morning when Mr Chamberlain quietly & gravely announced that our country was at war with Germany. How merciful that we cannot see into the future. Little did we dream that the sad business would be carried on for more than three years. Do you ever recall Mr Denner’s affirmation & how sadly wrong he was? Now I will count my letters from Laghouat 66 letters received to date from Laghouat. The first one from Aumale is dated Sept. 17th. There is a big gap there which you will be able to fill in one day. Goodbye now love & on this special day of prayer my thoughts are with you if possible more that ever. God bless you always. All our love & wishes
Mother & Dad.

Monday a.m. Aug. 31st/42.
My dear Douglas.
About an hour ago the post-man brought ten letters from you dating from June 5th/15/20/23/27/30. July 2/5/9/14/ & on Saturday one July [deleted] 19 [/deleted] 17th. You can imagine my joy to receive all this news. I sent a cable to you on Saturday with a prepaid reply for 6/- acknowledging the letter of July 17th & two cables sent August 1 [deleted] 9 [/deleted] [inserted] 18th [/inserted] & x 20th (18th & 20th) & both received here on the 21st one in the morning & the other in the evening. We are thankful indeed to have all this news from you as I have been particularly anxious about you during the summer months. It is a great relief to learn that you have not suffered unduly from the intense heat. By this time no doubt you will be enjoying much cooler weather. Last week from Wednesday to Saturday we had real summer weather, but the heat was terrific & very trying after such a cool wet summer. During Saturday night there was a terrific change & yesterday was really cold again & we were thankful to see a fire. The rain fell in torrents until tea-time & now this morning everything hangs damp & heavy – a typical autumn morning.
Well love it is grand to read all your letters but my heart is sad too as I read between the lines the reason for the delay in your letters in early June. I know only too well how weary you are of the restrictions. I just keep on praying that you may have patience & courage for the day

of liberation which will bring new life to all of us. I am glad to learn of your grand companion from Wales & that you have the comfort of a degree of privacy in your small room. I suppose Tony & Jimmy are two of your party. But I have not known the name of the other one – a young Petty Officer I think you said. Well love your letters written in June tell of eager anticipation of the arrival of the parcels. It must have been a very weary wait until August 12th & I am so glad that [inserted] the [/inserted] small parcel arrived intact. It will be a great joy to learn that the other Red Cross parcel arrives safely as it contains things you really need. I will send another pair of shoes in the next parcel or would it be wiser to await your acknowledgement that the shoes sent are all right. I told you at the time that they were exactly like those you sent back home, only size 7, the others being 6 1/2. It’s wonderful how all the letters except No 11 have reached you. This morning I find I’ve made a bit of a muddle in my index. The last date is Wed. Aug 19 No 72. Last Monday Aug. 24th I wrote to you & posted the letter at Cornholme. I went over to see Mrs Banks for two hours. Letter No. 73. No 74 was written & posted at the pillar box up the road here on Friday afternoon after my journey to town in terrific heat. So I hope that the sequence remains unbroken. I should like you to write to Mr Allan Jaffe & [underlined] Sons [/underlined] Ltd. 101 Princess St. Dad called at the office one day in the summer but did not see anybody. We had a letter from Mr Tatham from Colwyn Bay. He said he had a letter from you & seemed delighted. Goodbye love once again. Always a little nearer the great glad day. All our love & thoughts & prayers.
Mother & Dad.

Friday August 29th/42
My dear Douglas.
I have just returned from a little shopping outing to Nelson & I have been thinking of you & Dad all the time. The heat has been terrible & I didn’t tarry longer than necessary. We’ve groaned & grumbled as the cold wet days of summer have passed away, & now the summer heat has come, it is quite over-whelming. I thought Wednesday was the hottest day of the year but each succeeding day is hotter than the last. As I told you in my letter on Monday Elsie came from Colne yesterday afternoon & it was a fine day but too hot to do anything but sit & talk. It is very many years since we met – she has not been to our home before - & she had a very interesting story to tell of her four years in West Bromwich. You can imagine something of what the last two were like. The people with whom she lived, now live in Yorkshire, - not far from Bradford, where Elsie now lives & she appears to be very happy paying frequent visits to her very kind friends. I do admire her courage & endurance. At present she is acting as companion – housekeeper morning & evening & working for Alfred (in connection with wool control) in the afternoons. She appeared to be very surprised with the beautiful country around here & in her short stay at Colne has seen much more of the country than I have. You know what Dad is – never wants to go anywhere. Last night he was on duty so he saw Elsie on the 9 oclock

bus to Colne before proceeding to the Works at Barrowford. We had a very [censored words] I’m sure I should not [censored words] up this morning I was [censored words] Tomorrow I am going to send you a cable with prepaid reply value 6/-. I am glad you asked us to revert to that method. It seems more satisfactory to me. We were very pleased to have a short letter from Mr Tatham this morning. He is staying at Colwyn Bay for a little rest & has probably written to you from there. He appears to be very pleased with the letter you sent him. By the time you get this letter the weather should be cooler & I am sure much more comfortable & easier to bear. I wonder if you have been thinking so much all this week about what happened two years ago. Two years ago last night the terrible message came & for many weeks life for me just stood still. Then came the glad news that brought a new lease of life but never in our wildest dreams did we imagine that the seperation [sic] would drag along to years. We just keep on hoping & praying that peace may come quickly.
I have no news of John since his birthday & am hoping he is still at the same place. My thoughts were so much with Mrs Clayton last night. I do hope she is all right. As you know she is now [censored words] Elsie brought the news that Dorothy & Eric have become engaged again. Also Mary & John. I have no particulars. Now love I will say Goodbye to you again & wander slowly, up the hill, in the blazing sun, to post your letter. I am always waiting for news of you. It is two weeks since the last letter, June 3rd arrived. Two cables on the 21st [inserted] August [/inserted] All our love Mother & Dad

Mon. a.m. August 24th/42
My dear Douglas.
It was a great joy to have two cables from you on Friday. One in the morning dated Laghouat 18th announcing the safe arrival of your first parcel & asking us to revert to prepaid reply cables the other about 7-30 p.m. dated 20th acknowledging our message to you on the 15th. I couldn’t describe my feelings when I learnt of the safe delivery of your parcel. I felt that you had some little pleasure, and I hope you are able to get water to enable you to “wallow” in the parcel’s contents. Now I shall look forward to hearing that you have got other things too. I am glad you wish us to start the prepaid telegrams. It feels so much more satisfactory to know the things are paid & done with, apart from any financial advantage. Hope to send a message towards the week-end. Last Monday morning I had a letter from you dated June 3rd making five of the small batch I had previously received one Saturday & 3 Friday. In my cable I acknowledged “four letters today” meaning Friday and Saturday, to save words Now I am looking forward to another lot.
I have just received a post-card from Elsie Tilley who is staying at Colne with Rev. & Mrs Jones. She would like to come out to see me one afternoon & I am suggesting Thursday & hoping it will be fine & clear so I
[page break]
can show off my view. The garden is looking quite nice too with hundreds of roses & calendulas, golden rod, lupins, chrysanthemums & other bits & pieces. I’ve had some lovely pansies just in front of the dining room window & they’ve always reminded me of our happy journeyings to Pennyffordd. You remember those beautiful bigs [sic] ones we brought from Mr Newbrook? Am reading two books at present. Nothing more extreme could be imagined “Bomber Command” & “Dear Mother”. The former title speaks for itself the latter prefaces a series of letters from a raw recruit. My sense of humour must be wrong. The work is too silly to be funny – reminds me, somehow of the “funny”? men on the radio who have to laugh at themselves, just to show their audience what is required of them.
Did I tell you that last Monday we received from the Canadian Red Cross in Ottawa the card you sent to them on [deleted] on [/deleted] November 12th/41 acknowledging receipt of a parcel. File A. Parcel No 6. Do you remember it. Your last letter mentioned that you have not had any Red Cross food parcels since Christmas. We are very sorry about this & do hope you have by this time received arrears of parcels. We learnt from the papers that there had been much delay in delivery of all Prisoners of War parcels. It is not surprising really. The marvel really is that so much does get through. Hope these funny pictures from Saturday’s Guardian are allowed to reach you. Goodbye now love for a short while. Always our love & thoughts & prayers from
Mother & Dad.

My dear Douglas.
The letter received from you on Wednesday [inserted] written 3/6/42 [/inserted] was not written in your usual cheery spirits & I am wonderingly anxiously about you all this long time. Of course I know just how utterly weary you must become, of the monotony of the daily round & the unchanging scene & there is so little I can do to relieve the conditions – just keep on writing my little bits of news & sometimes I find it difficult, too. You will remember only too well the circumstances that used to “irk” you so much in the long quiet evenings. I get [underlined] all [/underlined] the benefit ? Of that now & not only in the evenings. At meal-times too & believe me there are very many occasions when it is difficult to refrain from a mild form of hysteria. But always the mood passes & there is ever the great kindness which just makes conditions “livable”. And so we go on = always looking forward & hoping ever for brighter days. I have been very disappointed that all news of your Camp Echo has ceased. Has the work on it ceased also? I used to feel so glad to think of you with happy & congenial work (there is nothing more useful for passing time) & your last letters do not mention it so I am wondering. The little parcel I tried to send to you by Air Mail is still here. I am waiting
[page break]
to hear that you have received one parcel before I open it. I will send the letter on to you. The contents of the parcel will be useless as it has been packed since February. It was horrible reading of the Tarantula in your room. I sincerely hope you do not receive many such visitors. We are nearing the end of August & we hope the end of vermin – flies etc. Last night the dining reminded me of the first night at Worsely, but before we closed doors & windows for the night I spent some time with the fly-spray & there wasn’t one fly to be seen when we got up this morning. It is a pleasant Autumn morning with sunshine & a light haze which gives promise of great heat. We were awakened in the night by a terrible rain storm but all traces had gone when we got up. The ground dries up so quickly here. We have so much wind. This morning altho’ so bright & pleasant we have a mild gale & the wind is howling around the house as tho’ it was winter. In my letter written on Monday I told of a new batch of letters 3 Friday 1 Saturday & 1 Monday making 5 altogether the latest date June 3rd. These letters bring great joy to me & I am always looking forward to having them. I sent you a cable on Saturday as follows “Delighted cables August ninth & twelfth, four letters today, making 22 letters since July eleventh. Hope parcels arrive. All love Hudson.” The letter of May 27th contained the enlarged snap = making 14 photos in last batch of letters. Good isn’t it. You know just how delighted we are to have them. Goodbye now love. As ever all our love & thoughts & prayers. Mother & Dad.

Monday 8 a.m. 17/8/42
My dear Douglas.
I have just received your letter 2/6/42 making five of a new batch. We had 3 on Friday morning dates 19/27/28/ May & one Saturday [inserted] dated [/inserted] May 21st written on your birthday. I am so glad you had a good mail on your birthday. It is good to be remembered Strange that Mr Tatham’s letter of April 9th arrived on that day. Was it intended as a birthday letter? It was funny about the cables you telegraphed “delighted 3 cables from Calverley.” Meanwhile I had a letter from Auntie Maud saying she had sent birthday greetings to you. Uncle Jim & Auntie Gladys [deleted] said [/deleted] told Dad they were going to cable to you so naturally I thought those were the three you had received. [underlined] I wrote a letter of thanks to 106. [/underlined] Isn’t it funny? Auntie Una said she was sending a message. So now I must write a somewhat belated thank you to her. Well love my letter from you this morning is some-what “sad-making”. Spirits at Zero, evidently, when it was written. Probably the great heat was to blame. There is nothing I can do to help = only keep on praying that you may have wisdom & courage & patience. I know just how weary you must be of the seclusion & monotony but at least you [underlined] can [/underlined] keep on hoping for freedom & happiness again
[page break]
& when we remember that so many of those dear lads who worked & trained with you never will return we must try to be thankful that you have life & health. Last time Mrs Clayton was here (& every time we meet) she talked so much of the wasted years of our boys lives. Three years is a big part from youth. But perhaps the years are not really wasted for you must learn many things by such close contact with men of all sorts & conditions. My last letter from John, in response to my birthday wishes was a very happy one & at last he seems to be in congenial surroundings. Strange that he should have spent so much time in the Dales, which never made any appeal to him in earlier days. Well love the summer season is passing quickly away & no doubt you will welcome cooler days & freedom from the terrible flies. We read dreadful stories of the conditions on the war fronts in the desert where the flies live in clouds, not just mere hundreds. We think ours here are pretty loathsome. We have more in this house than anywhere before, - owing, no doubt, to the farm which is not very far away. We had heavy rain on Saturday after a very wet week but yesterday Sunday was a really lovely day for pottering in the garden tho’ not warm enough to sit out. This morning, strangely enough as your letter has just arrived mentioning it, the lake is once again rippling in the sunshine & the world in my immediate vicinity “looks very beautiful”. Now love Goodbye again. As ever all our love & thoughts & prayers are with you.
Mother & Dad.

Wed. a.m. Aug. 12th/42
My dear Douglas.
I wonder if you are remembering two years ago today. Every detail stands out so vividly & I can see again all the little tender gestures of love & affection. My beautiful roses bloom only in memories, but how precious they are! And how thankful we are for the hope that one day we may recapture the joy & happiness. I have just been writing to Mrs Bowers. It is two years ago tomorrow August 14th since Harry went out on his last long journey & I know just what a sad anniversary it will be. She is very brave.
This morning the post-man brought a 2nd p.c. of Laghouat. A picture of the road where you saw the woman spinning. I think the palm trees look beautiful but Dad thinks they look “daft” with the tufts at the top. Dad has been on duty again & on these occasions [inserted] occasions [/inserted] (can’t spell it) has two hours at home for breakfast. New rules are in the making, he says, which will mean no time off whatever – just go straight into the Works after duty. I wonder if he will, or can, go much thinner. I used to worry a great deal about it, but after seeing Jim, Maud, & Kenn, on war-time rations, allied with the urge for saving £.S.d. I’ve given up worrying. These slender forms
[page break]
seem natural to the Hudson family. Last night Lord Woolton announced biscuit rationing from August 23rd. If that is on the same [deleted] pos [/deleted] position as sweets we shall be better off. A month ago the sweet ration started 2 ozs per head per week. On Aug. 23rd it is to be increased to 3 ozs per head which I think is generous in these days of war. I was amazed to learn from my grocer that in pre-war days the mill workers used to buy 4 ozs of sweets every day. I am often wondering if any of the parcels have reached you yet. It does seem pretty hopeless sending anything worthwhile. On Sunday I read “The Call of the Wild” by Jack London & now Dad & I are sharing a new one by Warwick Deeping “Joan of the Tower” very weird & wonderful!! Not really impressed. Well love the days are just passing away & we feel to be starting winter again. Rain & cold persist & now it is blackout-time at 9-12. I seem to have got my dates a bit mixed at the beginning of my letter. Today as I said is Wed. August 12th so I have written my letter to Mrs Bowers a day too soon. Dad & I were remarking at breakfast time August 12th & grouse-shooting would have begun in pre war days & [indecipherable word] would have been devoted in our newspapers to the arrival, cooking, & eating, in London, of the first brace of birds. I hope you are now able to use the Cable & Wireless service, if it is an advantage to you. If not we will revert to the old prepaid reply system which seemed quite useful. Goodbye now love, again. Thank you for post-card dated 5/6/42. All our love & thoughts & prayers from
Mother & Dad.

My dear Douglas.
It has been a great joy to me to have your cable, dated Laghouat 8th, delivered by post this morning. At the same time I had a letter from Cable & Wireless from London as follows. “We thank you for your letter of the 3rd instant, & have pleasure in confirming that on June 30th we duly telegraphed the necessary authority for the acceptance of “Collect” telegrams from your son at Laghouat. In view of the notification you mention, however, we wired again on the 5th instant & have received confirmation that the necessary instructions have been repeated to the Camp Authorities at Laghouat, & we therefore trust that the arrangement will now work smoothly.” The latter sentiment I heartily endorse.
Well love it’s Monday morning again & it’s raining again – surely one of the wettest summer seasons ever. We have never had our garden tent out this year & scarcely ever have we been without a fire. The holiday week from June 25th was the best of the summer & we were fortunate indeed. Strangely enough, in spite of apparently adverse conditions “the earth bringeth forth & bud & giveth seed to the sower & bread to the eater.” The quotation is, I believe, from the eighth Psalm – one of the few remembered from school-days. To revert to the fruits of the earth – last night I gathered more raspberries & made two pounds of
[page break]
jam which looks “gradely”. From kind gifts from my neighbour (gooseberries) & the produce of our own little plot I have made as much jam as our ration for a year & we do know it is fruit & sugar. An extraordinary thing about living in this house altho’ it is a soaking wet morning the out-look is quite good. In spite of the poor weather the gardens look bright & we have hundreds of roses, pink, red & white. I am the winner in the competition for the first chrysanthemums & am very proud of my first bloom & believe it or not our apple tree has just produced six buds. Now to revert to your greetings cable. It is signed Douglas Hudson. The last three have had Douglas Hudson. Is it because you now have another Hudson in Camp? I am hoping you may have a guest named George Horne [inserted] Wireless Operator [/inserted] with you now. He was reported missing in June & his people are in great trouble. I wonder if you will remember what happened two years ago tomorrow by the day. You arrived home quite unexpectedly on 48 hours leave. It was such a short stay, you remember, in the house 11 a.m. Tues. & away again 12-30 p.m. Wednesday. Every detail returns so vividly to my mind = our little trip to the florists & my lovely roses & gladioli – our journey to town in the Rolls = all the new Sergeants on the same train = the return to the empty home. = Then the long days of waiting & wondering. Now it is a different kind of wondering & we just look forward to the days ahead when we may recapture together, joy, “& delight in simple things” Meanwhile – always all our love & thoughts & prayers are with you & our thanks for remembrance & wishes today.
Mother & Dad.

My dear Douglas.
It looks as if we must say Goodbye to summer now. This morning is Autumn with heavy mist – rain at 6-30 & everything out-of-doors looking still & damp & sad & need we wonder!! At present Dad & I just listen to the big news on the radio then we switch off before all the harrowing details of this terrible upheaval are defined. It is all so very distressing & bewildering. We were delighted to have your cable on Saturday last. The recent news of you is so welcome. I cannot yet begin to expect more letters from you as the last batch of 18 only ended about the 23rd of July & there is usually a delay of five or six weeks between them. The very last to arrive was the first to be written dated March 13th. It must have been lost somewhere tho’ there are no extra post-marks to verify my surmise. By the time they arrive here your letters bear five censor-ship marks & of course Laghouat post-mark & your post-card picture of Laghouat had four marks & the post-mark, every one very neatly stamped on the address part of the card which I thought was rather decent on the part of the censors. I have just had to leave my letter to attend to my grocer whose visit, fortnightly, is quite an interesting event. His load today included 12 brickettes. I am trying to make some provision against the wintry weather & coal, as you are probably aware is almost as precious as gold. It is nearly three weeks since the man left four bags on his usual round but that is not much
[page break]
to build up a winter reserve. To revert to the groceries – it is really wonderful what we can buy after nearly 3 years of war. This morning I have got my monthly ration of sweets 1/2 lb boiled sweets, butter scotch & lime fruits, & 1/2 lb of toffee things coated with chocolate. They are quite good. My soap ration is 1 lb for 2 weeks & speaking of soap reminds me of your next parcel. I thought to send you the 6 tablets of Lifebuoy, & perhaps a Palmolive (which I cannot buy at present) but according to the July edition of the “Prisoner of War” journal the total amount of soap in a parcel after July 1st is eleven ounces (11 ozs) each tablet counts 3 ozs. I am wondering now if they would allow the seven sent, in ignorance, in my parcel of July 25th. I received the July & August publications yesterday & a most courteous note. You must cable any further needs. I wrote to London on Monday about the cables muddle but so far there is no response. I hope you have got things straightened out now. We are more than thankful for the precious link the cables provide. Your latest letter was written on May 15th & I know it is no use expecting any more for some time yet. “The Prisoner of War tells me that Christmas parcels are now being packed. There is also a list of the contents but I won’t spoil the little surprise – only tell you that it reads good & I do hope you will all receive your shares safely. I also learn from the journal that at present 175,000 parcels are being packed each week in the United Kingdom & Canada at a cost of £87,500. What a blessed organization!! Goodbye now love & as ever all our love & thoughts & prayers are with you.
