RESCUED FROM NORTH AFRICA INTERNMENT CAMP
BURNLEY BOYS HOME AFTER GREAT ORDEAL
RELEASED from interment in French North Africa by the recent invasion by American and British forces, several local men have arrived home this week and been joyfully welcomed by their families.
Among them are Marine George Latham, 40, Travis-street, Burnley, and Ordinary Seaman George Taylor 30, Grasmere-street.
Both were on board H.M. Cruiser “Manchester”, which was torpedoed in the Mediterranean on August 13th, while escorting a Malta convoy. The crew most of whom were uninjured, reached the North African coast, and were interned in a combatants’ camp in the Sahara, where for three months they suffered privations from overcrowding, bad sanitation and insufficient food.
LANDED HOME IN SHORTS
Marine Latham reached home yesterday wearing a pair of shorts, a shirt and an Army greatcoat. O.S. Taylor arrived in Burnley on Wednesday, in good time to celebrate his 20th birthday yesterday.
In interviews with an “Express” reporter, both men paid sincere tribute to the work of the Red Cross, though the parcels were generally rifled before the men got them.
“We would all have been invalids but for the parcels”, said O.S. Taylor. Though their homes are only a few minutes’ walk apart, the men had never met until they were informed in letters from home that they were in the same camp.
TERRIFIC FLIGHT
Fully recovered from his double ordeal of the Mediterranean convoy battle and later the terrible conditions prevailing in the internment camp at Laghouat, O.S. Taylor told an “Express’ reporter his amazing story.
“The Manchester’ was part of the escort for a big convoy for Malta,” he said, “and we had a terrible fight in the Mediterranean. I was on desk loading our gun for most of the time and I had a marvellous view of everything, including the sinking of the aircraft carrier ‘Eagle,’ which went down in about 15 minutes.
“We were attacked by ‘planes from about dinner-time one day until dusk, and had some remarkable escapes. We gave as good as we got though, and a lot of ‘planes were shot down. We got some sleep that night, but a dawn it all began again. Bombers, dive-bombers and torpedo-carrying ‘planes of all kinds came over. and there were sub-marines about too. One actually surfaced quite near, and we opened up on her. I believe we hit her too.
“In the Straits of Pantelleria the E-boats attacked us. We sank several by gunfire, but one of them got us with a torpedo, and we got orders to abandon ship. We were only about five miles from the shore then. I got into a Carley float, and just as dawn broke we were spotted by a French ship which took us in tow.
“We were jolly glad to get on dry land,” continued O.S. Taylor. “The local population received us in a friendly way and gave us fruit. We thought our troubles were over. Then we were all collected together and put on the train and spent about a week travelling across Tunisia and Algeria. Finally we got to a terminus of some kind and were transferred to motor ‘buses for the last stage of the journey to Laghouat, which is well inside the Sahara.
“BEAU GESTE” FORT
The actual camp is like the fort in ‘Beau Geste’ more of a fortified town than anything. It was already crowded when we arrived. The crew of the ‘Havoc’ were there and a lot of R.A.F. chaps too. Some of them had been there two years, ever since France capitulated.
“Conditions generally were terrible. We slept 48 in a room designed for 24 native troops. There was a water supply only a short time each day, and the heat and the flies make life unbearable. It was a good job we had our surgeon-commander and a few sick berth fellows with us, as there was a lot of illness of various kinds. Two fellows died during the three months we were there. We couldn’t keep clean, for one thing, as we had no soap.
“The grub was terrible, mostly macaroni and a kind of bread which tasted as bad as it looked. Our sardine ration worked out at one sardine per man every 10 days. We were given wine to drink, potent stuff it was too, but not very pleasant to the taste.
“Things got gradually worse, and for eight weeks there were no cigarettes at all. Previously we had missed a lot of cigarettes altogether. Finally we mutinied and refused to parade for counting. This had the desired effect, and there was some improvement afterwards.”
CAMP “UNIVERSITY”
“We had to amuse ourselves as best we could during the day,” said O.S. Taylor. “A ‘university’ was started, and I attended for mathematics and English. There were also some splendid lectures by various officers, particularly by one who served in the French Foreign Legion. Some of the fellows also got up a pantomime, which was as good as anything I have ever seen.”
Describing the scene when the news of the invasion came through on the wireless, O.S. Taylor said that it was on a Sunday morning when they heard a sudden yell from a group of lads who were listening to the wireless. When it was finally established that the news was authentic, everyone went mad and there was “some fun with the guards.” Red Cross parcels appeared, and there was general rejoicing. On the following Thursday they were all sent to Algiers and put on board a liner. reaching Scotland with incident. Everyone was granted a month’s leave, which is expected to be extended over Christmas.
TWICE TORPEDOED
Marine Latham, who had been torpedoed previously, and spent 9 1/2 hours on a raft before a small French vessel picked them up, was formerly employed at Ormerod Whitaker’s Oak Bank Mill. He joined the Royal Marines three years ago as a musician. He is well-known in local dance band circles as a trumpeter.
Whilst on active service he was attached to the fire control squad, and when the order to abandon ship was given he assisted in the work of lowering rafts and boats before jumping overboard, and with another member of the crew clambering aboard a spare raft.
As a souvenir of his adventure he has brought home a knife he made out of a piece of his iron bed. This was to cut the bread with which they were issue in Laghouat.
Marine Latham has been granted six weeks’ leave, four for overseas service and two for survivors’ leave.
Sergt. Observer J. Douglas Hudson, whose parents live at 191, Halifax road, Nelson, has also arrived home after spending two years in a Moroccan prison camp.
Able Seaman Arthur Turner (24), 137, Waids House-road, Nelson, another internee in Morocco, is expected home shortly. He has been torpedoed on three occasions.
Junior Third Officer Ellis (21), so of Mr. and Mrs. John Ellis, 15, Meredith-street, Nelson, was interned on October 23rd in Morocco, but his parents have had no communication from him since.
Another local man who it is hoped will arrive home shortly is Mr. W H. Clemence, 18, Wood-street, Brierfield of the Merchant Navy. Before being called up he was employed in a mill at Harle Syke.
News is awaited of Flight Sergt. Observer John Walsh, one of the three serving sons of Mr. and Mrs. Walsh, 14, Brockenhurst-street, Burnley, Flight Sergt. Walsh was interned at Mediouna, near Casablanca, after his Beaufigher of Coastal Command was shot down. According to one report, internees from Mediouna were taken on board United States vessels, but no further details have been forthcoming.

PRISONERS DIG 187-FT. TO FREEDOM
Captured, Freed
By MARGOT BECK
AFTER tunnelling 187 feet to escape from an internment camp in Algeria 29 soldiers were recaptured.
The armistice signed after the fall of Algiers set them free again, and some have just reached Britain.
Their camp, they told me, was at Laghouat, an oasis on the edge of the Sahara, and its conditions were appalling.
But it was the terrible boredom that affected the prisoners most. All day they had nothing to do but sit in the blazing sun thinking.
They decided to plan their escape, and started to dig a tunnel from one of the prison cells.
Dug in relays
For seven long months they dug in relays for 24 hours a day. As they went further underground they had to deal with the problem of lighting their work. They solved this by stealing some wire and joining it to the electric power.
Soon they had burrowed under the inner wall – then underneath the courtyard – under the thick outer wall, and finally out into the desert and freedom!
But not for long. Arab guards soon tracked them down, and they were sent back to prison.
Yesterday Sergt. J. D. Shanahan of Toronto, said to the “Sunday Chronicle”: “We heard the news of the Allied landings over the camp radio. At first it seemed too good to be true. The French, who were forbidden by the Germans to listen to Allied broadcasts, took a lot of convincing. We certainly were glad to leave that place.”

ENFIELD AIRMAN’S DEATH AND FUNERAL
SERGT.-AIT-GUNNER D.W. RANDALL
A FELLOW-OFFICER’S TRIBUTE
The “Gazette” regrets to record the death on Active Service of Sgt. Air-Gunner Douglas William Randall, of 58 The Sunny Road, Enfield. Aged 32, Sgt. Randall was for 2 ½ years and internee at Laghouat in Algeria, gaining his freedom in November, 1942, soon after which he was married.
In an interview with a “Gazette” reporter, a petty officer in the Royal Navy, who was in the same camp, spoke of the good work done by Sgt. Randall, who played a big part in the manning of the camps, He also produced a camp paper entitles the “Echo” and helped organise sports in the camp. His final effort on behalf of the men who were held captive behind barbed wire, guarded by French native soldiers, was the part he played in organising an escape party.
Sgt. Randall joined the R.A.F. at the beginning of the war and had taken part in a number of operation flights over Germany.
Prior to going into the Services he was employed at “Zet-a-lite’s” where he became a director and was very popular for his ever-present smile and good nature. He also engaged in free-lance journalism, writing articles for well- known newspapers and magazines.
At the funeral on Monday, the Royal Air Force was represented by Flying Officer Hoskins, and amongst the many sent were wreaths from the N.C.O.s of the Squadron; Officers of the Squadron; and his Squadron.

Dear Douglas,
I suppose the script of these few lines will come as a bit of a surprise to you, after not hearing from the old firm for such a long time. If you were to walk into the office now, you would hardly know anybody here, as most of the old staff have joined the forces. Brady, Foulsham (both brothers) Owen are in the R.A.F now stationed in India, and the majority of the others are in the Army or Navy. How do you like life in Algeria, are you fed up with the heat, we could do with some of it [deleted] lose [/deleted] over here, as we have’nt had much this summer. Well Douglas, the members of Jaffe’s contribute each week to fund, the purpose of which is to send comforts to members of our staff who are prisoners of war, or [inserted] on [/inserted] active service.
In this connection, as secretary of the fund, I am sending you 500 cigarettes, “Players Medium”’ I have already sent 250 about two weeks ago, so you ought to be receiving them about the same time that this letter arrives. The other 250, I am dispatching on Thursday next. I should be glad if you would kindly let me know if you would prefer that we send you other things than cigarettes, and I will do my best to see what can be done.
All at 101, join me in wishing you a safe and speedy return, and best wishes for good health and welfare. Yours sincerely. J Mackenzie

My dear Douglas.
Here I am again tho’ not yet fully awake. You will know from previous letters that Mrs Clayton has been here for a day or two & in consequence my correspondence has been neglected. And what a time it has been!!! You used to say “we never know that they’re up to” & believe me truer words were never spoken. Since Mr Clayton died so suddenly on Dec. 2nd I’ve heard such fantastic stories & am still as far away from the truth as ever. But I understand that next week Mrs Clayton will have two guests living with her. Miss Hetty, (you remember her, she was 80 when you & John were boys together but now she’s 72) & a Dutch business man. But I’d better go back to Wednesday, the day of Mrs Claytons arrival. It was arranged that she should get the 2.20 from Manchester and I would meet her at Nelson. She didn’t turn up so I came along home & Dad & I were just finishing our meal when she arrived. Almost the first words were “whatever made you come to live at a place like this”! & that was the burden of her song until she went away on Saturday. As we stood waiting for the 12 am at Nelson she said again “I can’t understand you living at such a place” & I was so angry I was forced to retaliate with “I don’t suppose Cheetham Hill will look really beautiful today”!! From all of which you will gather that the visit was not an unqualified success & really I was never more thankful to say Goodbye to anyone.
[page break]
Yesterday, was poor day for me – think I have a touch of ‘flu with pains all over - & I stayed in bed until 12.30 & was away to bed early at night. I sent your cable on Saturday advising you as I have done in previous letters that the Censor refused permission to send your small parcel. It is still here, neatly packed, as I had hoped to send it to you. It would be common sense to open it & use the contents while they are fit to use but I haven’t much heart to do so yet. Well love we are still awaiting your letters since the one written Nov. 25th. It is the longest gap in your letters, over 3 months, & always I am thinking of you & praying for you, & all the dear boys with whom you spent your happy childhood. How thankful we have been that they were as full of joy as we could make them. I know you will feel a sense of almost personal loss, as I did to learn [censored sentence] Mrs Clayton told us that Louis’s extraordinary mathematical knowledge is being utilized by the R.A.F. & that Peter is “resting” after a very strenuous time. John is still at the same place awaiting some fantastic happening, as usual. What a life!!! A letter from Auntie Maud on Saturday told that Uncle Jim was very poorly suffering from asthma & his Dr has told him he must not go back to the works. So theres a good post for somebody. Now love Goodbye again & all our love & thoughts & prayers are with you always. Spring is on the way & daffodils in the shops 6d each. Your favourite carnations 2/6 each. Mother & Dad.

My dear Douglas.
March 4th & Spring well on the way once again. This morning the wind is howling away, very true to type of March, but the snow is going very rapidly now & there are many little green shoots in the garden now. You know just how much they mean to me. As soon as I opened the door this morning there was my dear blackbird just beginning its song. It is always very wonderful to me. I remember last year the song became so loud & persistent that we felt to have more than enough but after the long severe winter the song of the birds brings great pleasure. Our “lake” is still frozen though the ice is now beginning to look more transparent. Always I am wondering what conditions you have in camp. It is very easy for me to visualize elemental conditions – the lovely sunrises & sunset the storms of sand & wind & rain, the heat, but not the cold & how I do hope that you have been warm & had enough to eat during these long winter months. As I have mentioned in recent letters Mrs Clayton stayed with us from last Wednesday to Saturday & how we did argue!! You know how Dad loves an argument! He got quite “peeved” about it. He would be surprised if he knew that we even “argued” him. Mrs Clayton contends that his influence for good on all the
[page break]
people with whom he has come in contact is boundless. I myself fear it is very limited but there it is. At any rate – his kindness is indisputable. I have just picked up the morning paper & this is what I read.
“Sir Thomas Barlow (you remember him don’t you) Director of Civilian clothing is preparing a scheme to put 2/3rd of the civilian population into standardised clothing, shorter skirts, trousers without turnups & coats with buttonless sleeves, & in order to stop extravagance & unnecessary expenditure there will be a very great reduction in the variety of colours & styles” Hope we have nothing more to worry us than that. Dad rang Auntie Maud up on Monday & learned that Uncle Jim is improving nicely, though still in bed. Dad intends to go over for the day on Saturday. Now love I have left my saddest news until the last. I know just how shocked & grieved you will be (as we were on Monday) to learn that Louis made his last journey at the end of February. I told you in my last letter that he was engaged on experimental work for the R.A.F. & [censored words] He was buried yesterday at Stretford. I tried to get flowers to send from Nelson but was not able to do so owing to very difficult wartime conditions. The funeral was at 12 noon so I could not have got there in time I wrote to Mrs Murray as soon as Mrs Clayton’s letter came on Monday & told her I knew you would wish to be associated with us in our message of sympathy. Will send you any further news. All our love & thoughts & prayers from Mother & Dad.

My dear Douglas.
Dad has just set out into snow which comes above his Wellington’s [sic] & as the bus service appears to be suspended he is walking to town where he hopes to get another bus to the works. Last time I wrote to you – on Wednesday morning – I fancied myself the herald of Spring but believe me the illusion has now vanished & winter’s [indecipherable word] grip is strong around us. And always I am wondering how it is with you. Your last letter written November 25th arrived on January 31st. Since then only the precious cables to bring reassurance & comfort. The one this week arrived on Wed March 4th at 11-30 a.m. from Laghouat 4 p.m. “ 3rd which is good isn’t it & always such a joy & relief to have your recent messages. The previous one seemed to have got itself a bit mixed & was marked “corrected copy from Laghouat” & was as follows E. J. Hudson 191 Halifax Rd. Delighted cable thirteenth love thoughts reciprocated await parcel [underlined] lated [/underlined] letter received January fourteenth writing always. Hudson.” I take it the message should have read “latest letter received dated Jan. 14th” & we are so thankful you get my letters quickly Your Wednesday cable told of latest [underlined] letter Feb 4th dated [/underlined] which is good. The letter wrote on Wednesday (before
[page break]
your cable arrived gave you the distressing news of Louis’s death. [censored sentence] I know you will be very troubled by the loss of a very dear friend. It does seem such a waste of precious life & outstanding ability. Did you know that his engagement to Barbara was broken off some time ago – Mrs Clayton told me the news when she was here. I consider her information about as reliable as Dad’s. You understand what that means don’t you & believe me these days of war & wholesale disturbance have brought no improvement. I used to wonder what our future together would be like without you (never for a moment imagining the future so near) & now I know. It all seems so futile! And Mrs Clayton babbles of Dad’s boundless influence!! Yesterday I did a bit of cleaning up of papers & came across all kinds of communications from the Red Cross & they reminded me that beyond the parcel of cigarettes despatched from the State Express Tobacco Co. in London we have not sent you a parcel. But there is nothing we can send that you really want. I wanted to try to get a fountain pen to you but according to the Red X that is not allowed. Nor can we send any kind of food, not even slab chocolate if we could get it nor tea cigarettes etc. Soap we could send but as I have told you in previous letters it is very severely rationed 4 ozs each per week for all purposes & as I understand that the Red X send it regularly now I have not done anything about it. Now Goodbye love once again All our love & thoughts & prayers are ever with you.
Mother & Dad.

An account of the resource
Writes that spring perhaps was not yet on its way as she stated in last letter. Mentions only getting cables as no letters since 31 January. Quotes from content of his last cable which arrived very quickly. Mentions death of friend and then two lines blacked out. Catches up with news and gossip of friends and acquaintances. Mentions correspondence from Red Cross and that apart from a parcel of cigarettes they have not sent anything else. Many of the things she wanted to send like a fountain pen were not allowed.

Sunday night. March 8th/42
My dear Douglas.
I have just seen Dad go out to his fire watching duties, on one of the worst nights imaginable, with snow falling heavily. The bus stop is just across the road & I was waiting to see him get on the bus when a car stopped & took him along to town so I am hoping the journey would not prove too bad. The weather has been very disappointing today. We waked to see the sun shining & lots of blue sky, but by mid-day greyness was spreading all around – then about tea-time the snow began to come down in earnest. It really has been a very rough winter with more snow than we have seen for some time. But now we have got to the 8th of March we can reasonably hope for sunshine soon. Well love we are still awaiting more letters. The last ones arrived on Jan 31st (dated to Nov. 25th) & I am ever hoping the post man will bring the most precious of all our letters. Of course we do understand that their [sic] are so many dangers & difficulties to be surmounted before the letters can reach us, & are truly thankful indeed for all the dear messages which do reach us. I have felt very sad & troubled all this week since learning of Louis’s death. It does seem such a waste of bright youth & ability. I have not had any further news that that sent to you in my last two letters nor do I expect to hear much more. As you used to say “everything is so casual” but it is a great sorrow to us to know that another of your dear friend’s has made
[page break]
the greatest sacrifice. I have just been reading again your letter dated November 16th which also arrived on Jan 31st & it is good to learn that you were receiving such splendid parcels from the Red X. With all my heart I hope you keep on getting them. The food question becomes increasingly difficult & rationing continues but we still have enough to eat & are very thankful. It is really rather wonderful that we are able to get so much after so many months of war & tho’ we do grumble sometimes “at the powers that be” we feel they’ve tackled a very difficult job very efficiently. I wonder if I told you in my last letter that Uncle Jim was ill with asthma & that Dad was going to see him on Saturday. Well, Dad rang up & learned that the invalid was much better & as travelling in war time is not very pleasant & very wintry conditions do not improve matters he decided to postpone the visit, which was very wise. Auntie Maud wrote that Gordon is now in Burma & that little Rosemary has been very ill with appendicitis. Joan seems to have had more than her share of trials lately. We can all imagine her acute anxiety. Tomorrow (no Tuesday the 10th) will be Eileen’s birthday so I must send her a line. Did I tell you she was at Pudsey now, doing the same kind of work in a more important sphere with much better pay. We have no news from that branch of Calverley since my birthday so conclude there is nothing exciting to report from there. So now love Goodnight once again. We are thinking of you always & just looking forward all the time to peace & joyous reunion. All our love & thoughts & prayers from Mother & Dad.

My dear Douglas.
I carefully number each of my letters now & am just wondering how many (or how few) of them fail to reach you. It will be interesting to know, tho’ the replies to letters now seem long delayed. We are still eagerly awaiting letters written since November 25th the date of the last one received from you on Jan. 31st. In previous letters I have told you that after a very long wait (from December 15th) we had 10 (ten) letters in the week from January 24th to 31st & since then have been eagerly looking for more. I keep on reading them over & over again & am so very sorry not to be allowed to send you anything you really need. No tea, or food of any kind, no sweets or chocolates, no cigarettes only through accredited dealers & two or three weeks ago I paid for 300 State Express cigarettes to be sent to you from the State Express Company in London. The transaction was done through a good class tobacconist in Burnley but the whole business seemed very casual that I keep wondering if you would receive the parcel or more correctly if it would be despatched to you. I do hope so. Well love these sad days of war are passing away & here we are almost in the middle of March with very wintry conditions. There is still a lot of snow around us although the roads are almost clear now. Yesterday I was sitting thinking about you – I spend hours doing that –
[page break]
& wonder what you were doing two years ago. So I just got out the pile of letters written from your “school” in the far north & could recapture very vividly the memories, gay & grave. How little in those day [sic] did we imagine what has come to pass!! Although sometimes my heart is full of sorrow & sadness I cannot help but be thankful that you [underlined] are [/underlined] here on earth. I know only too well how weary you must often [deleted] b e [/deleted] be of the inactivity & restriction but we can, & do, look forward always to days of peace & reunion & happiness again. Dad & I are just keeping on our quiet anxious way (you know just how it ever was) & very very often I feel as you do how futile it all is. Then I open the door & hear my dear birds singing their songs of hope & encouragement & take heart again. Do you have birds in the camp & are [deleted] are [/deleted] you able to see the lovely gardens in Laghouat about which I read in the book I mentioned in a previous letter? Once or twice I have sent cuttings of announcements & wonder if you have not received them. - Joan’s (Lander) wedding on July 5th Don Chadwick’s in September – You have made no comment so I just wondered. Now love it is time to begin my household duties. I have just drawn the curtains but it is a dark morning with heavy mist, & the snow lying around gives a chill outlook. I can picture your outlook very vividly & am so glad you sometimes go for a walk into town. It all means a little more interest. Now love goodbye once again As ever all our love & thoughts & prayers are with you. Mother & Dad.

Friday 7-30 a.m. 13/3/42.
My dear Douglas.
The days are lengthening rapidly & Dad has just gone out into a light world with lots of frozen snow & bitter cold. = I suppose we forget but it seems a very long time since we had such a long spell of severe wintry weather. I remember the first March we were at Worsley what a lovely Spring time it was & Mrs Ellis calling for me to go out into the Spring sunshine on March 9th. I also remember having my afternoon cup of tea in the sunny corner of the garden one day in March. Today of course there are many differences & I rarely indulge in afternoon tea these days = only if callers arrive. As I have told you many times I go out a great deal here & enjoy it very much but I usually have to hustle around to make dinner ready in time for Dad. We still have enough good wholesome food in spite of rationing. It is really surprising how one can manage to adjust conditions & circumstances. I just keep on reading my last batch of letters received between Jan. 24th & 31st & dating from Oct 22nd to Nov. 25th. It is a relief to us to know that conditions are not too bad & always such joy in the hope of glad reunion. Very Very [sic] often I try to picture your return. The days pass quickly away & age relentlessly takes its toll & we must be prepared for inevitable changes but one thing will ever remain = our deep love. Such joyous memories I have & I am just living in the
[page break]
hope that one day, perhaps sooner than we realize, our happiness may be renewed.
I have not yet written to Mrs Randall nor have I received a letter from her. I wonder, is it that we each fear to intrude. The last week in February was Warship week in M.c.r. & we notice in the list of contributions published in the Guardian that your old firm had given £5,000. I wonder if you have heard from E.W.F. lately. I wrote to him at Christmas to the address he gave, The Athenaeum Club, but have no response so far. Not that the message called for any =. You know of course that he now has a full-time post in the National Fire Service. The said service has been getting into various troubles lately for many delinquencies including the extravagant use of petrol. We read of one service not a hundred miles from M.c.r. using petrol, & of course a bus, to take a party to a football match in Scotland. But according to a new order issued yesterday there is to be a future drastic reduction in the petrol ration & it looks as though joy-riding will be stopped altogether & rightly so. Dad & I have felt very sore about many of the goings on very near to us. Strange how even a war of this magnitude strikes hard at some & leaves others in blissful possession of almost peace-time activities. Now love I must say Goodbye to you again I am due at the hairdresser’s at 11 a.m. & have my usual little duties to perform in the meantime. All our love & thoughts are ever with you. God bless you always
Mother & Dad.

7-30 a.m. Monday 16th March/42
My dear Douglas.
I am writing this letter in daylight 7-30 a.m. & that shows how rapidly the days are lengthening now. It has been a very beautiful morning with an opal-tinted sky (what I call a desert sky) which brings you very close to me. It was 7 a.m. when I first looked out on to a lovely world. Flaming red in the east & heavy clouds scudding across the gorgeous sunrise. Now the beauty has passed & the sky is streaked with clouds which look to hold rain. This weekend has been very different to last – just as mild as last week was severely cold. The lake still has a large sheet of ice & it is strange to watch it being moved about by the March wind. There are still great patches of snow lying on the hills & yesterday morning Dad & I set out for a walk over the hills towards Todmorden but found the road deep in snow. A party of young cyclists passed us just before we came upon this snow & when we got to the bottom of the hill they were holding a committee meeting as to mode of proceeding. Eventually they set off up the hill carrying their machines & the last we saw of them they had climbed the wall into the field & were pushing the machines over the grass which is of course so wet after the heavy snows that much of the land look like bogs.

I sent a cable to you on Saturday & now am eagerly awaiting the reply. I always feel to have something to look [deleted] ing [/deleted] forward to while awaiting my cable & it usually takes 4 or 5 days for it to get here. It always seems so wonderful that we can exchange our short messages of hope & reassurance. Daffodils and snowdrops are in the shops again but the price is out of all reason. Daffodils 6d each, snowdrops 9d a tiny bunch, & your favorite [sic] pink carnation 2/6 each. The way of life in this small industrial town surprises me. There are some really attractive shops with most expensive goods & the dress is remarkable. But I am not an admirer of the broad Lancashire accent which, in spite of the many advanced ideas in education, is very prevalent here.
Miss Chester came in last night. She went to Manchester on Saturday to see one of Ambrose’s shows = Merry-go-round = & enjoyed it. It was her first visit to M.c.r. since what you described “as the Manchester effort.” & she was amazed & shocked. I have heard of another firm, at Blackburn, who send parcels of cigarettes to troops so I am going to get particulars in the hope of sending more to you. It seems that parcels sent via the Red Cross take six or eight months to reach their destination. That seems a very long time in these days of anxious waiting. Now love Goodbye again for a day or two. All our love & thoughts & prayers are ever with you.
Mother & Dad.

My dear Douglas.
Dad has just gone out on his fire watch duties so I am going to talk to you. I’m afraid there isn’t much to talk about = things seem to be going along quietly = just the daily round & common task. Dad seems to be having to do an extra bit, as one of his best men has had to go back to work in the pit. He was a good reliable man & will be difficult to replace in these days of acute labour shortage. It is a case of Dad training an older man & you can imagine the job is not too easy. Last time Dad was on duty he left home during a blizzard. Tonight he left home on the fringe of a very severe thunder-storm, of all things, in March. I was thankful it was almost over before he left home. It was strange to have thunder & lightening & to see drifts of snow lying in the hollows. The ice has all gone from our “lake” now & the warmth has come so suddenly as to be almost over-powering. Dad & I were so warm last night we let the fire go out as we sat reading. So now we are hoping it is Goodbye to chilblains & all the other uncomfortable accompaniments of frosty wintry weather. [censored sentence]
[page break]
my fairy godmother had endowed me with a little more courage. As you know I’m not a bit brave & very very [sic] often become very anxious indeed although I do realize how stupid it is. The long weary wait for letters is very trying & I am so very thankful that ours get through to you more quickly. I am still waiting for the precious cable. Dad rang Auntie Maud up at the weekend & learned that Uncle Jim is much better & had been up to the Mill again. I wrote to Eileen for her birthday on the 10th but have no response – in fact I have no news whatever from that part of the world since January 19th. Today I’ve written to Auntie Gladys for her birthday tomorrow & remember it is Ted Hole’s birthday too. I told you he is in India didn’t I? You know that Mr Hole retired from business last winter don’t you? Mrs Hole says he does a lot of walking & has derived benefit from it. It must be heaven to be away from the E.S. Co. This week we learn of many imminent changes in our food supply. No more white bread after Easter until the war is over & there are hints of reduced rations of meat & butter. But its no use worrying about that now. “Sufficient unto the day, etc.” Now here’s Joseph McLeod telling the news again which means it is 9 p.m. so now I will put the kettle on & make my cup of tea. How I do wish we could enjoy it together! The announcer is just telling that gas, electricity, & coal are to be rationed. What a blessing summer is on the way. Now Goodnight love. As always all our love & thoughts & prayers are with you.
Mother & Dad.
