When I fell over the horseshoe
That was nearly as big as me
Sandy asked to borrow it
‘Just for luck you see’
With the horseshoe around his neck
In Lancaster turret so lone
If the call had come to ‘parachute’
He’d have dropped like
The proverbial stone
It wasn’t thanks to the skill of the pilot
Nor thanks to the rest of the crew
The reason that safely they finished their tour
Was thanks to that dirty horseshoe!
F for Freddy are being grounded
Now they’ve finished their tour
F for Freddy have just expounded
How they accomplished this lucky score
‘We’ve made our shirts and socks last
For these twenty weeks past
If we’d changed them, for certain
We’d have gone for a Burton’
F for Freddy are viewed with suspicion
By fastidious Corporal Wilf
‘Call that superstition
I would call it filth’!!

MEMORIAL AT HATCLIFFE TOP
In their Lancaster they had bravely battled with Berlin’s fighters and flak
Skipper Proudfoot and his young crew on their 23rd Op
Homing to Waltham through fog dense and low
Crashed by the Pines-suffered and died
On high Hatcliffe Top
The years have flown by, but you are remembered
Here, where nature’s rich bounties are spread
And the trees of pine still stand sentinel
Over peaceful fields, where your young lifeblood was shed
Shed in the hope that there would be
Lasting peace for suffering humanity
Pause by this ‘Stone’ and before you go
Remember-
The debt to brave Bomber Command Aircrews
That we will forever owe
Memorial erected by Roger Stephenson

THE WRENS PARTY
We were invited to a WRENS party
On romantic St Valentines eve
The venue was down in the coastal town
An invite we were flattered to receive
Such excitement you wouldn’t believe
We were taken there by Station transport
Sounds good! but between me and you
It meant cramped in the back of a lorry
Packed like sardines in our best blue
The dance hall was romantically decorated
With hearts of course, and candles aglow
We were greeted by our charming hostesses
Who had put on a really good show
There were handsome young sailors to dance with
And bearded officers anchored on shore
We WAAFS were very much in demand
As they whirled us around the dance floor
THEN the attention we were receiving
Began to upset some of the WRENS
They took a dim view of the girls in blue
Stealing their partners and [inserted] their [/inserted] special friends
They seated us under the candles
To partake of the cakes and the wine
To us on our RAF rations
The Navy’s catering suited us fine
But – when we got back to our billets
We were very vexed to find
From the candles they’d seated us under
Were cascades of wax down our backs-most unkind
Of course it could have been accidental
Our sisters in service the WRENS
Could never, no never even in jealousy
Have thought up such a revenge
But invited again to a WRENS party
Whether it be on ship or on shore
We will arm ourselves with candle snuffers
And SNUFF out their candles for sure!!!

The Police!
Searching kitbags
‘Take out all the things girls
You don’t want them to see’
Pandemonium .. Panic .. Incredibility!!
[inserted] The [/inserted] ‘[deleted] The barmaid [/deleted] WAAF Officer
Is with them
And looks far from pleased to me’
Enter the law
With measured pace
To each bed space
‘How are you?’ he said
As he stopped by my bed
I saw
The hard face of a WAAF Officer
She who had mocked with scepticism
My rheumatism
So I laid it on thick
‘I have been very sick
And I’ve suffered pain’
‘For how long?’
The Policeman made it plain
He was interested
Would he have me arrested?
‘Oh a long time’ I said
The law scratched his head
‘And you have pain now?’
‘Yes’
‘Are you sure?’
‘Yes I’m sure my back’s very sore’
He searched my kit-bag thoroughly
What was he looking for?
Yet another tragedy of war

Poem 1 A SONG OF HATE
Paddy is an Irish Man,
May Paddy come to grief.
Sad we wish this on him,
But his arguing is beyond belief.
Paddy is an Officer
With two rings upon his sleeve,
But the trouble we [deleted] R/T OPS [/deleted] [inserted] Girls [/inserted] have with him,
You really would not believe.
[inserted] woudn’t [sic] [/inserted]
With his hair as red as carrots,
And his stock of Irish blarney,
He thinks that he knows everything
But we all thin [inserted] k [/inserted] he’s barmy.
All through our hours of duty,
Eight, twelve or even more,
We R/T OPS have to suffer,
His arguementive [sic] roar.
Paddy likes his tea sweet,
But never was a man so sour,
If only we could heave him,
From the top of our Watch Tower.
POEM 2 A Ratty Problem
We’ve rats in the Fixer Tower,
They’ve gnawed holes in the floor,
We wake from our slumbers,
To hear “rattlings” galore.
They’ve gnawed Katy’s blanket,
And she’s got really vexed,
‘Cos there’s never no “gnawing”,
What they’ll gnaw next.
Oh Church Fenton’s signal section,
Give ear to my song,
We’ve had this “Rattalian”,
Two months too long.
So, Signal Section,
Something quick you must do,
Please get a Pied Piper -----
To lead them to you!!
[inserted] We’ve rats in the Fixer Tower
- We have To sleep on The Floor
We wake from our slumbers
To hear rattings galore
Theyve [sic] gnawed Katey [sic] Blanket
Right By her Feet
And Theres [sic] never no gnawing
What next They may eat
[deleted] Find [/deleted]
OR we’ll get a Pied Piper
To Lead Them To you [/inserted]

‘He is flying tonight’
These words
Said light
Cause a blight
To o’er me roll
As all the fears
Too great for tears
Invade my soul

RADIO ROUNDELAY
Mosquito’s at Swannington impatient to land
‘Round and Round I go
Heigho! Heigho!
‘Never get shut eye at this rate’
‘Oh hell you never can tell’
‘Listen old man I’ve got a date
With SNAKEHIPS and she’ll not wait’
‘Not with SNAKEHIPS again!
You are really tempting fate’
‘My good lord what a bore
Going round and round
The landing ground’
‘At Angels 9, 10 and 11
Going right up to blinking heaven!’
All this natter come to me
Over Swannington R/T
As Mosquito crews ‘muse’
Their patience just a little frayed
When waiting to pancake after a raid

A SONG OF HATE
Paddy is an Irishman
May Paddy come to grief
Sad we wish this on him
But his arguing is beyond belief
Paddy is an Officer
With two rings upon his sleeve
But the trouble we R/T [inserted] ‘s [/inserted] [deleted] girls [/deleted] have with him
You really wouldn’t believe
With his hair as red as carrots
And his stock of Irish blarney
He thinks that he knows everything
But we all think he’s barmy
All through our hours of duty
Eight, twelve or even more
We R/T OPS have to suffer
His arguementive [sic] roar
Paddy likes his tea sweet
But never was [deleted] a [/deleted] man so sour
If only we could heave him
From the top of our watch tower

THEME SONG FROM RHAPSODY IN HUT 13-SWANNINGTON
Has anyone a fag’
‘Oh Annie must you nag?’
‘Are you going out Ray?
‘Yes going out with Sash
Girls, bags and bags of pash
With my honey child’
(One day that dame will drive me wild)
‘Bee have you a fag?’
‘No I haven’t any
But I’m going out with Penny
And he’ll give me some
‘oh Bee you are a one
Going out again
In all this pouring rain’
‘Well its worth going for’
‘Bee it won’t get you anywhere’
‘That’s what you think’
‘I think I’m going for a drink
Up to Ye Olde Naafi, are you coming Cathie?
‘No I’ll not come, bring me back a Naafi Wad
And a concrete bun’
‘Did you say you’d come Jan?’
‘Yes I’ll come with you Ann, but when I come back
I have my bag to pack, and some ironing to do,
Then I’ve quite a few things to get together,
And I’m wondering whether I should really wash my hair-
But then-I’ll wait till I get home,
Oh dear I can’t believe tomorrow I’ll be on leave
Look out mum, here I come’
‘Rita have you a fag?’
‘I’ve only matches in my bag and bother I’ve to phone’
Says Rita with a groan, ‘to tell them I’m going to the Section
Chiefy has a selection of eggs and bacon
Poor Tom he’ll thing he’s forsaken
I haven’t written for ages and he writes me pages and pages
I guess I’ll write him tomorrow’
‘Won’t anyone let me borrow
Just ONE fag’
‘For the sake of our sanity Annie

STATION DANCE
Laughter and wine
As we capture
Moments sublime
From old Father Time
Ale and Wine
Flowing faster
Than Thames or Tyne
Toasts at youths
Sacrificial shrine
Dancing
To a different theme
Than the one played
On many a raid
Youth is the melody
Love is the theme
Music to make magic
A golden dream
That all too soon may fade
For Youth and maid
May we now only know
The glorious glow
Of earthly bliss
What though youth’s kiss
Be stale from wine and ale
When in the eyes
Shines paradise/?
Tomorrow who knows?
Life’s golden chalice
Which we now hold so tight
May, ere another night
Fall from finger-tips
And crash to pieces
Ere our lips
Can taste again
The happiness that glows
When youth’s wine flows
We who so much give
Tonight
Our Birthright
Is to LIVE!!!!

Bawtry Bind
I’m one of the Airforce G.D’s
I’m fighting a war if you please
Cleaning steps and floors on my knees.
Everything smells musty
I swear I’m going rusty,
Sweeping and dusting,
While waiting remustering.
I’m one of the Air Force G.D’s
Cleaning Ablutions and W.C’s.
Brushing and scrubbing,
Polishing and mugging
It’s such a frustration
To clean up the Station. -----
Won’t someone, somewhere
Remuster me PLEASE.

Envy
We don’t envy the wrens for their sailors’
Their adventures on ship and on shore.
Their handsome Officers and lieutenants
Their dances and parties galore
We don’t envy the Wrens for their quarters
Their sailings, their berths and their [deleted] moorings [/deleted] [inserted] dockings [/inserted]
Their boasts of being of the ‘Senior Service’
But -- We do envy their real silk stockings.!

You were very beautiful B
Baby Blonde Hair
Eyes as blue as the summer sea
Skin fairest of fair
And you were a WAAF
In the billet with me
Recalling your beauty
And the hearts that you broke
My remembrance of you
Is a bit of a joke
Very drunk you were
Blue eyes astare
As you peered at me
Through your haze of hair
And your voice was thick
Yelling “Katie come quick
That Scottish Pilot
With red hair and blue eyes
Is nothing but
A ‘wolf’ in disguise
Entangled we were
In the middle of a fir [deleted] tree [/deleted]
I tried to get free
I think I’ve broken his nose
What do you suppose
Will now happen to me?”
If you’ve ever been caught up
In a Lebanon spruce
You’ll know how difficult
It is to break loose!
‘Oh I think the Queen Bee
Between you and me
Will hang you from the very top
Of that same Lebanon tree!’

[underlined] HAPPY CHRISTMAS [/underlined]
“HAPPY CHRISTMAS”
We called cheerily to our friends
Hard to believe
On that Xmas Eve
How quickly happiness ends.
Our Lancaster Crews
Flying safely back
After battling through
Berlins Fighters and Flak,
Homing to Waltham
Through cloud base too low
Nowhere to divert to,
Nowhere else to go,
With fuel finished
So nearly home
They crashed landed
On the fog bound Drome.
On this Christmas night
Eighteen of our young Aircrew
Are lying dead in the Medical Flight.
Along with forty four
Killed the night before.
From the Christmas Eve Service
WE found no solace, nothing.
But our Corporal found she had lost
A diamond from her ring
With a flickering torch
On our bended knees,
Through the sermon we search
Finding ------- nothing.
If we search through life
Will we find why
Our brave Bomber boys
Had to suffer and die?
[underlined] Please God, we will not find [/underlined]
They died for --- nothing.

RAF WALTHAM XMAS EVE 1943
Happy Christmas!
We call to our friends
But how quickly
Happiness ends
Forty of our aircrew
Returning from Berlin
And almost home
Trying to land
On our fog bound drome
Crashed this Christmas night
Are now lying dead
In medical flight
On the sad task
That had to be done
The M.O. sadly reflected
All these young lives
And I couldn’t save one!

STATION DANCE. BOMBER COMMAND 1943
Laughter, dancing and wine
Toast at youth’s sacrificial shrine
Youth’s melody, loves the theme
Music to make magic a golden dream
Capture moment’s sublime
From old Father time
Faster, faster, dancers swing
Louder, louder, music ring
Lest we should hear the fear
Ever whispering in the ear
And what though youth’s kisses be stale
From wine and ale
When in the eyes shines paradise?
Tomorrow who knows?
Life’s golden chalice which now we hold so tight
May ere another night
Fall from lifeless finger-tips
And shatter forever, ere our lips
Can taste again happiness that glows
When youth’s wine flows
We who so much give
Tonight our birthright
Is to LIVE’

The Waafs from our Station
Were invited to an American celebration
We were made to feel quite feminine
On this special occasion
When we were given a beautiful rose
With an elaborate pin
The huge Hanger
Where Liberators and Forts
Were usually housed
Was now crowded with men
‘Oh don’t tell me they’ll
Be chasing us again.
But no, they were standing
Row upon row
Gazing at the Band
The biggest Military Band
I had ever seen
Conducted by a bespectacled man
Smartly arrayed in Military dress
A small man, I guess
Not much bigger than me
The beat of the Band, its Hip HIP hop,
Made you want to dance and never stop
But nobody did, they stood and listened in awe
All the long night through
We felt privileged to stand [inserted] We felt privileged to stand [/inserted] and listen to
The wonderful [inserted] & [/inserted] famous Glen Miller Band.

[underlined] SALLY LANCASTER [/underlined]
Little Sally Lancaster
You are remembered down the years
By aircrews of 100 Squadron.
And how you helped to allay flying fears. It was a strange coincidence
Intriguing and quite true
That your surname should be the same as the plane in which they flew.
In 1944’s war torn summer
Young aircrew would be seen
Cycling down the steep village street
Racing past the village green
At a breakneck pace,
With one hand on the handlebar
And the other
Holding precariously perched in place
A parcel of washing for your Mother.
Summer swallows chased them
Darting and diving around, having fun.
Birds and boys enjoying
The “circuits” and bumps of the laundry run.
“Landing” safely at Sally’s cottage
To deliver their laundry there.
She would greet them with a happy smile
As they gathered round her chair
To watch her knitting woollen dolls
In patriotic red, white and blue.
Good luck charms three inches high
To take with them when they had to fly
And dice with death in a hostile sky.
Pretty Polly Lancaster
With lovely auburn curls
Sadly, you could not walk and play
With the other village girls,
But you labour of love, in the work of your hands
Wrought mascots of magic and the record stands-
In the invasion summer, until December
100 Squadron had the longest spell of good fortune
That anyone could remember.
Though heavily engaged in war,
The cost? Only one aircraft lost!
Four aircraft survived more
Than 100 operations.
Magnificent Men and Machines.
Bravery beyond believing
Endurance, sacrifice, guts and pluck
All played their part.
But little Sally Lancaster
Wise beyond her years
Knew ------ they [underlined] also [/underlined] needed [underlined] LUCK. [/underlined]

THE EVERLASTING TURKEY
On the first day of Christmas my true love said to me
I’m glad we bought a fresh turkey and a proper Christmas tree.
On the second day of Christmas much laughter could be heard
As we tucked into our turkey, a most delicious bird.
On the third day we entertained the people from next door;
The turkey tasted just as good as it had the day before.
Day four, relations came to stay, poor gran is looking old;
We finished up the Christmas pud and ate the turkey cold.
On the fifth day of Christmas, outside the snowflakes flurried;
But we were nice and warm inside – we ate our turkey curried!
On the sixth day, I must admit, the Christmas spirit died,
The children fought and bickered – we ate turkey rissoles, fried.
On the seventh day of Christmas, my true love he did wince
When he sat down at the table and was offered turkey mince.
Day eight, our nerves were getting frayed, the dog he ran for shelter;
I served up turkey pancakes with a glass of Alka Seltzer.
On day nine our cat left home, by lunchtime Dad was blotto –
He said he had to have a drink to face turkey risotto.
By day ten, the booze had gone, except our home made brew;
As if that wasn’t bad enough, we suffered turkey stew.
On the eleventh day of Christmas the Christmas tree was moulting;
The mince pies were hard as rock, the turkey was revolting.
On the twelfth day of Christmas, my true love had a smile on his lips;
The guests had gone, the turkey, too. We dined on fish and chips

Take Off
I look down
From the high windows
Of Flying Control
Peering through
The evening mists
That roll
Around the loaded
Aircraft below.
As if to keep them
Safely Earthbound.
By their planes
The Aircrews
Mothers sons
Who did not give
Them birth for this
Tensely wait
Talking, smoking
Some standing apart
The Green Very light Signals
[deleted] Signals it is time [/deleted]
[deleted] To go [/deleted] It is time to [deleted] go [/deleted] [inserted] depart [/inserted]
[deleted] Sign [/deleted]
Encumbered with flying gear
Slowly they climb the steps
Into their planes
Some perchance pause
And give a backward glance
As if loath to leave
The earth they love
Then the 20 [deleted] laden [/deleted] [inserted] heavily laden [/inserted] planes
Wind slowly round the peri’ track
The Group Captain
Surrounded by a few
Off duty WAAFS and ground crew
Salutes them as they pass
Then as the Merlins roars
And lifts you
Into the dusky
Evening Air
We who watch you go
Give a silent prayer
Are you listening
You up there?

Raw Recruit.
After the humiliation
Of nude examination
The mastication
Of Air Force stodge.
Endless queing [sic]
For irons,
Plate and cup,
Woollen hood,
Woollen stockings.

As big as me
I stand outside
In a Wiltshire winter
And yearn and yearn to be free.
-----------
I’ll run away to freedom
Ere I cast my civvy skin.
But ---- What will they think of me at home
When there is a war to win?
That I’d run away like a rabbit
Run away from the truth?
Other’s were paying war’s debt with their lives
I’d only to pay with my youth.
----------
In that Waaf reception station
I wipe the tears from my eyes
And turn from freedom’s temptation
And pay with my youth ------
Was I wise?.

Ode to [underlined] 50 [/underlined] Squadron R.A.F.
Twas last night that I saw them, in the skies they'll fly no more,
My squadron so valiant and brave.
A squadron of England's fairest fighting men
Flying quick and steady to the grave
No trumpets blared before them, but the Merlin's mighty roar.
No intoxicants ran through them, but the rich, red wine of War
And I'll see them, as I saw them flying yestereve,
Flying quick and steady to the grave.
Twas last night that I saw them, in the skies they'll fly no more,
For they're sleeping in the sunset down below.
With their faces to the eastward, like the chivalry of yore
To the eastward, full of promise and the foe
But, I'll keep them in my inner heart, with a love that none deny,
My squadron, so valiant and brave
And I'll see them, as I saw them, flying yestereve
Flying quick and steady to their graves.
