Title
A name given to the resource
Aerial violation of Swiss airspace
Description
An account of the resource
Report form the Commander, District 1, Land Division regarding violations of Swiss airspace on night of 12/13 July 1943 when all areas covered by the Territorial Inspectorate of District 1 received alerts which began at 00.06 and continued until 02.09. Large numbers of aircraft were seen overflying this whole area, sometimes at a lower altitude than seen in previous sorties.
The report consists of five sections:
1. Details of bombs which fell in and around Praratoud and action taken.
M. Gauthier, Chief of Police of the Fribourg Canton, had received reports of bombs falling on Praratoud, Oudisfeld and Ueberstorf. He went to Praratoud immediately and confirmed that the above reports were true – 5 bombs had fallen but not exploded. With the help of the local constabulary, he took steps to establish order and ensure the evacuation of one farm especially at risk. The Federal Military Police requested that M. Gauthier, remain in Praratoud to investigate the possible destruction of the bombs or their removal. A Military Service Order was put in place and would remain until the bombs were removed or destroyed. In the locality of Oudisfeld only one bomb fell and exploded: however, it was claimed that there was serious damage to crops and to the rooves of apartment blocks over a radius of 400 – 800 m.
2. Details of bomb which fell on Le Bouveret and action taken.
Information, coming into District 1 from different directions, suggested that a bomb fell in the vicinity of Le Bouveret. A detachment of Fusiliers from the Border Force was immediately sent out to investigate. It was thus established that a 4-engined aircraft had come down in this area. 5 bodies were found and searches continued. Major Corboz of District 10 got in touch with M. Gauthier shortly before 08.00 and requested instructions concerning the collection of the bodies. From 08.00 onwards detachments from District 10 and Border Force Fusiliers continued with the formalities.
3. Details of bomb which fell near Sion. Difficulties encountered and action taken.
Details had come in from various directions regarding the fall of an aircraft in the vicinity of Sion but problems were encountered when trying to contact and obtain reliable information from the relevant authorities during the hours of darkness. In spite of these difficulties, the reports received were eventually thought to be correct and the Inspector of District 1 was able to send the order to District 10 to ask the neighbouring constabularies to proceed with the necessary enquiries. An aircraft was finally located at the end of the road leading to Viryon.
4. Details regarding incendiary bombs.
During the morning, various places were located where the incendiary bombs had fallen, – mainly in the area above Lausanne in the region of Savigny, Normiers and their environs. Steps were taken in each case to proceed with the destruction of the unexploded incendiary bombs. These bombs do not appear to have caused widespread damage.
5. Other bodies contacted and informed regarding the above events.
Various other imprecise observations were confirmed as correct in the early part of the morning by Districts 2 and 11 and the Inspectorate of District 1 was immediately informed. As soon as the facts were sufficiently clarified, each piece of information regarding the 2 afore-mentioned aircraft was also communicated to the Army High Command, Land Division; the Intelligence Service; the Anti-Aircraft Division and the Press Office of District 1. He also requested that all authorities under the control of District 1 participate in the destruction of the incendiary bombs – or, for any other incident, to send in a detailed report.

LEBENSGEFAHR!
W.G.2.F.
[page break]
[underlined] Gibt es wirklich keine Brücken mehr …. [/underlined]
[illustration]
WEITERKÄMPFEN MIT HITLER BIS ZUM VERRECKEN UND NATIONALEN UNTERGANG
oder
[/underlined] SOFORTFRIEDE UND WIEDERAUFBAU? [underlined]
[page break]
[underlined]Das Schlimmste![/underlined]
[underlined] DAS [/underlined] IST DAS SCHLIMMSTE !
[underlined] Den Krieg überleben…. [/underlined]
[page break]
Deutsche Arbeiter! Übt Solidarität! Verbrüdert Euch mit Euren ausländischen Kollegen unter der Losung:
SCHLUSS MIT DEM KRIEGE!

[page break]
REPANDEZ LA VERITE SUR LES DEFAITES ALLEMANDES SUR TOUS LES FRONTS ! ECOUTEZ LES NOUVELLES DIFFUSEES PAR LES POSTES ALLIES! OBEISSEZ AUX INSTRUCTIONS DU COMMANDEMENT SUPREME ALLIE !
[box surrounding text]
SURVIVEZ A LA GUERRE!
[/box]
[page break]
[underlined] DEENDEZ-VOUS MAINTENANT![/underlined]
[underlined] VOUS ET L'ÁLLEMAND A VOS COTES [/underlined]
[underlined] UNE REGLE: [/underlined]
[underlined] VOUS N'ETES PAS SEULS! [/underlined]
[underlined]TOUS POUR UN ET UN POUR TOUS [/underlined]
[page break]
[underlined] VOUS SOUFFRIREZ [/upnderlined]
[underlined] QUEL GENRE D'ORGANISATION? [/underlined]
[underlined] CELLULES D'ACTION [/underlined]
[page break]
[underlined] RECLAMEZ VOS DROITS [/underlined]
VOS DROITS concernant.
[underlined] QUELLE ACTION PRENDE ?
[underlined] LA FAIBLESSE DE HITLER [/underlined]
[page break]
[underlined] QUITTEZ LES VILLES !! [/underlined]
'' Il est souvent arrivé... ''
[underlined] UNE GRANDE OCCASION SE PRESENTE A VOUS ! [/underlined]
[underlined] NOUS VOUS DISONS DONC : [/underlined]
[underlined] VOTRE FORCE EST IMMENSE ![/underlined]
[underlined] COMMENT VOUS POURRIEZ AGIR ! [/underlined]
[page break]
[underlined] Aux Travailleurs Alliés en Allemagne ! [/underlined]

[underlined] VOUS ETES EN DANGER ! [/underlined]

Lebensgefahr
Danger de Mort
Description
An account of the resource
The first part is targeted at the German population and argues, with illustrations, for passive and active resistance against the regime. It uses the image of Germany’s many broken bridges to argue that the only bridge open to the German people is that leading to peace and reconstruction.
The second, much longer, part warns foreign workers in Germany (particularly French and Belgian) that they are in grave danger as the final conflagration of the war is inevitable. Urges them to take action to lessen the danger and hasten the end of their captivity, and gives guidance and instruction as to how they should proceed.
It says that workers are in danger from Germans and from air attack from Allied Forces, the like of which they have never seen before. They will be forced to live and work in areas where Allied attacks will be at their fiercest (such as Darmstadt and Frankfurt), sent to the front, or forced to work on the fortifications. Hostages are likely to be shot or beaten and tortured in special concentration camps.
Claims that workers are in a powerful position, and should consider the successes of the Resistance organized against the regime of Mussolini before the Allies invaded in 1943. A workers’ general strike in Copenhagen in July 1944 had similar success and the workers triumphed in their demands. The 12 million foreign workers in Germany could paralyse the production of goods as well as all transport links and all this could be done in a few days.
Workers should get out the industrial centres - which are likely to be bombed by the Allies - and go to the countryside. They can hide there taking advantage of widespread labour shortage. Workers should have alibis ready, pretend to have lost their way, avoiding to rouse suspects, and steering clear from big farms as these may have spies.
Stresses the importance of sabotage and passive forms of resistance which will reduce the quality and quantity of production, either by deliberately misunderstanding instructions or damaging an almost finished article. The combined effect of these actions may be massive.
Workers should band together to ensure that their rights in the camps, workshops, or wherever their work is, are meticulously protected. Rights include food in the canteens, rations, mealtimes, facilities in the camps and cantonments, working hours, sanitary conditions, hygiene, accident prevention, permissions, Sunday leave arrangements, protection from aerial attack, and the right to get to a shelter.
Stresses the importance of acting together forming or joining cells of passive resistance or protection rights; also claims that some anti-Nazi Germans can be valuable allies provided their intentions are sincere. Concludes urging foreign workers who cannot go to the countryside to organize resistance cells, slow production, resist exploitation by passive resistance, collaborate with anti-Nazi Germans, set up a list of Nazis and their minions and spread the truth about German defeats in battle on the different fronts. They should also listen to the news broadcasts from Allied sources and obey instructions from the Allied High Command.

Description
An account of the resource
Telegram No. 809 from the Swiss Government to the Swiss Legation in London (E. 6563), concerning the violation of Swiss airspace on 15th August 1943 (with additional references to the 12/13 July 1943 incident) when Royal Air Force bombers en route to Turin make an outward passage over Lake Annecy a returned 60 Km south of it. Complaint to be made, in person to Richard Law – Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State at the Foreign Office in London about repeated violations of Swiss neutrality. Vehemently asks that existing measures be strengthened and imposed robustly, stating that Law has promised investigation into events of the night of 12/13 July 1943 but declines to make any further commitment. Notes how the response note claimed that bad weather, cloud and storms upset the equipment, which in turn affected the compasses and it seems probable that the two aircraft which fell over Switzerland had lost their bearings and were in trouble. The relevant authorities have no proof that other planes passed over Switzerland but it is possible, in the circumstances, that there were navigation errors. In addition, our blackout would perhaps have led to some unintended violation of our neutrality by other means. It would, therefore, appear probable that the various bombs which fell that night over our territory come from the remains of British aircraft and that the British Government, since it regrets the incidents and the damage caused, is prepared to pay indemnity for all damages of that night where it can be proved that British planes were at fault.

Said God, “You sisters, ere ye go
Down among men, my work to do,
I will on each a badge bestow:
Hope I love best, and gold for her,
Yet a silver glory for Despair,
For she is my angel too.”
Then like a queen, Despair
Put on the stars to wear.
But Hope took ears of corn, and round
Her temples in a wreath them bound. –

An aimless smile that hovers in the air

I dreamt I was in love again
With the One Before the Last,
And smiled to greet the pleasant pain
Of that innocent young pest.
But I jumped to feel how sharp had been
The pain when it did live,
How the faded dreams of Nineteen-ten
Were Hell in Nineteen-five.
The girl’s woe was as keen and clear,
The girl’s love just as true,
And the One Before the Last, my dear,
Hurt just as much as you.
Oh! bitter thoughts I had in plenty.
But here’s the worst of it -
I shall forget, in Thirteen-twenty,
You ever hurt a bit!

Which may help some. Still I dunno.
Crows should be glad of one thing, though
Nobody thinks of eating crow,
While roosters they are good enough
For anyone unless they’re tough.
There are lots of tough old rooster though,
And anyway a crow can’t crow

I must go down to the seas again, to the lonely sea and the sky,

And a grey mist on the sea’s face and a [underlined] grey dawn breaking [/underlined].
I must go down to the seas again, for the call of the running tide is a wild call and a clear call that may not be denied;
And all I ask is a windy day with the white clouds flying,
And the flung spray and the blown spume, and the sea-gulls crying.
I must go down to the seas again to the vagrant gypsy life,
To the gull’s way and the whale’s way where the wind’s like a whetted knife;
And all I ask is a merry yarn from a laughing fellow-rover,
And a quiet sleep and a sweet dream when the long trick’s over. John Masefield.

When roses to the moonrise burst apart:
