PAPUAN CAMPAIGN IN FINAL STAGES
Last Japs. Face Destruction
Messages from General MacArthur’s headquarters yesterday announced that the campaign in Papua is now in its final stages, with the remnants of the Japanese forces at Sananada facing almost certain destruction, and that Allied bombers are striking at an enemy convoy approaching Lae, the Japanese New Guinea base.
[map depicting the Allied Base in New Guinea/Papua and the proximity to the tip of Australia]
One of the main objects of the campaign in Papua was the elimination of 15,000 Japanese troops under General Horii. With the complete enveloping of Sananada this is practically accomplished and with their destruction Papua will be entirely cleared of the enemy.
In addition, several thousand enemy reinforcements have been drowned or killed in attempts to land.
(Sananada is as well fortified as Gona and Buna and more difficult to approach. At Gona and Buna the Japanese, although outnumbered and cut off from sea aid by Allied predominance in the air, and weakened by disease, defended these positions almost to the last man. That such tenacious troops holding such defensively strong positions should be worn down and overwhelmed, speaks highly not only of the courage and skill of the United States and Australian troops but also of the care and thoroughness with which General MacArthur’s lieutenants prepared and organised the counter-attack.
Bombers Pounding Convoy
Allied aircraft are reported to be repeatedly attacking Japanese transports and escorting warships, totalling ten vessels, attempting to reinforce Lae.
Two large transports laden with troops were sunk with all on board during a night attack, and a 500-pound bomb scored a direct hit on another troopship, which was left in a severely damaged condition. Another was disabled and later sank.
A large number of enemy planes are protecting the convoy, and so far 18 have been shot down and five badly damaged.
The attack is continuing.
[underlined] TUNISIA [/underlined]
ITALIANS ROUTED IN ATTACK
Bad weather has stopped operations on the main fronts.
A French camel corps attacked a position held by 500 Italians and killed or captured 250 of them. The rest fled.
Tunis and Sfax Raided
Tunis was raided by medium and heavy bombers and the electric power station and shipping in the harbour were hit. Three direct hits completely destroyed the power house in a raid on Sfax.
Bomber Command aircraft raided targets in the Ruhr during Thursday night. All planes returned safely.
[underlined] TRIPOLITANA [/underlined]
OUTPOST CAPTURED AFTER THREE DAYS’ BATTLE
Fighting French forces have captured an outpost 65 miles east of Mazouk after three days of land and air battles.
Large supplies and numbers of troops are moving into forward positions for the coming attack against the Axis forces.
AIR ATTACKS ON TRANSPORTS
R.A.F. fighters and bombers made heavy attacks on transports 40 miles from Tripoli. Fighter-bombers made low level attacks on enemy transports on the coastal road and machine-gunned lorries loaded with troops and stores. At least one Me.109 was destroyed and others damaged in air battles.
Palermo Raided
A force of United States bombers attacked Palermo harbour and scored hits on dock installations. In raids on Tunis and Sousse hits were scored on railways and large fires were started at Sousse, where a ship was hit.
DAY RAIDERS OVER BRITAIN
Seven German planes attacked towns on the south-west British coast yesterday afternoon. Bombs were dropped causing some damage and casualties.
The raiders were finally chased out to sea by four Spitfires.
Berlin claims that a new bomb-proof submarine base has been built near Brest.
TWIN DON THRUST CONTINUES
GERMANS IN RETREAT AT ALL POINTS
The Russians are continuing their two-pronged thrust down the lower Don with the Russian armies converging from 80 to 40 miles apart in one day.
Soviet forces are closely pursuing the Germans on the north bank, while on the north bank the Red Army has smashed all attempts to hold up their advance, with Russian tanks over-running German infantry positions and inflicting very heavy losses.
At Nikolyskaya, on the north bank, Soviet forces battered back the Germans with tanks and heavy artillery, and at another point south of the Don, said to be only 70 miles from Rostov, the enemy were completely routed. South-west of Velikie-Luki, the Germans made several fruitless attacks against the Russians.
40 Places Recaptured
Moscow later claimed that in the northern Caucasus the German are now in full retreat and that over 40 more places have been recaptured. The Germans are setting fire to villages and blowing up bridges as they retire.
One tank unit alone killed more than 500 officers and men, and a party of “tommy” gunners killed another 100.
Berlin Admits Reverses
Berlin admitted yesterday that the German armies in Russia were on the defensive on all fronts, and a German radio broadcast explained to the people that their troops were being slowly withdrawn from their present positions in order to shorten their line.
(London military observers note that the Russian offensive may soon, by effectively threatening Rostov, place the Germans in the Caucasus in a critical position.)
ROOSEVELT’S SPEECH PRAISED
President Roosevet’s [sic] address to Congress received endorsement from the entire national press yesterday, states a London message.
The Times describes the speech as one which “breathed a high sense of purpose without once losing the characteristic sense of realities.”
All the morning papers praised the President for a full and frank statement of the war on all fronts.
FAMOUS SUBMARINE RETURNS
A famous British submarine, the Thresher, has returned to a home port after completing thirteen patrols in 18 months. The vessel has two V.C.s and a D.S.O. among the crew.
During the long spell at sea the submarine journeyed near 40,000 miles and sank eleven Axis merchant ships and four supply ships.
RUSSIA-BOUND CONVOY ATTACK BEATEN OFF
The British Admiralty announced yesterday that on December 31 naval vessels escorting a large convoy to Russia were attacked by an enemy force off northern Norway. The British force, comprised a number of destroyers while the German units included one pocket battleship, a large cruiser and several destroyers.
Two Hours Fight
The fight lasted for more than two hours in semi-darkness and falling snow. The destroyers had frustrated four enemy attacks on the convoy when a large force of heavier British ships arrived and the enemy fled.
Two German vessels were sunk or badly damaged and two British ships suffered damage and casualties. The convoy arrived safely at a Russian port without loss or damage carrying large supplies of war material.
The German radio admitted that the U-boats are facing grave difficulties against Allied shipping and that the date was distant when ships sunk by U-boats could not be replaced.
ODDS AND ENDS
CLEARING THE AIR
Recently Stalin gave a banquet for the Red Army general staff and Communist party leaders.
When he arrived, he took his seat on the dais and, raising a glass of vodka, said, “Comrades, I now give a toast to the great Stalin . . . to the wonderful Stalin . . . to Stalin the leader of Russia’s warriors. And I sincerely hope that this is the last I will hear about him at this affair.”
[symbol] Suggested sign for Hitler’s Russia front: “Opened by Mistake.”
SHOCK
A patriotic lady who sent out the following invitation to an officer at a nearby army post: “Mr. and Mrs. Browne request the pleasure of Captain Green’s company at dinner,” was dismayed at the reply she received.
“With the exception of five men on leave and three on sick list,” the reply read, “Captain Green’s company accept with pleasure your invitation to dinner.”
[symbol] “Too bad. He was a window cleaner and stepped back to admire his work.”
TRUTHFUL
The Colonel had insisted to his Negro cook that the turkey be a domestic, corn-fed bird, no wild fowl. He cut into a beautiful done-to-perfection bird, frowned, cut again, then sent for Sam.
“Didn’t I tell you I wanted a domestic turkey?” he thundered. “Yah, suh, dat’s a domestic, corn-fed fowl.”
“What about this shot I’m finding?”
Sam shuffled from one foot to the other. “Dat shot, Colonel suh, were meant fo’ me.”
[symbol] “He was so lit up the air-raid warden had to take him home under an umbrella.”
PREPAREDNESS
“The Fall of a Woman” will be the subject for Sunday evening at the First Baptist Church. Real facts and truths will be revealed. The eleven fans have been reconditioned and will be used to cool the building. – From the COMMERCE (Texas) JOURNAL.

ELIZABETHAN NEWS
Series 10, No. 1 THURSDAY, JANUARY 7, 1943 Two Cents
[underlined] TUNISIA [/underlined]
ALLIED ADVANCE NEAR MATEUR
Picked German troops were thrown out of strong positions near Mateur by British infantry supported by tanks and aircraft, states a message from Allied headquarters in north Africa. They occupied several high points and
[map depicting the Axis defense [sic] line and the Allied attacks]
beat off a number of strong enemy counter-attacks.
German reinforcements rushed up to assist in the attacks were heavily bombed by Allied aircraft and fell back in disorder.
A brief later message states that in another outbreak of fighting a very important line of hills 15 miles west of Mateur and 20 miles south of Bizerte have been captured after a fierce battle.
Flying Fortresses bombed Sfax, where a big power station was left in flames. Sousse was also heavily attacked.
New Fifth U.S. Army
A new Fifth United States Army, commanded by Lieut.-General Mark Clark, is being formed in Tunisia to fight with the British First Army.
U.S. AND BRITISH PLANES IN SWEEPS OVER BURMA
American and British aircraft carried out attacks on many Japanese positions throughout Burma during the day.
American planes attacked enemy positions at Mandalay and shot up railway yards and timber warehouses, while R.A.F. machines raided river and coastal craft along the whole west coast of Burma, damaging over 60 of them.
Two direct hits were made on a large Japanese ship in the Irrawady river and it was left in flames.
CHILE TO BREAK WITH AXIS
The Chile Government is expected to break off diplomatic relations with the Axis Power next Friday. This will leave Argentina as the one remaining larger south American Republic friendly towards Germany, Italy and Japan.
In the Caucasus
GERMANS FLEEING BEFORE SMASHING RED ARMY BLOWS
Moscow announced in a midday message yesterday that the Germans are in full retreat in the Caucasus following the capture by the Russians of Nalchik and that six more towns were captured during the day’s advance.
Another arm of the great Russian Caucasus offensive struck in the vicinity of Mozdok, east of Nalchik, and it is reported that 500,000 crack German troops are fleeing before the fierce attacks of Russian tanks, artillery and Cossack regiments.
In their retreat the Germans are blowing up bridges and mining roads in efforts to check the Red Army advance. Pravda says the retreat is becoming disordered and that the Cossacks are causing very severe losses to German and Rumanian troops.
Narrow Bottle-Neck
The Russians are pursuing the enemy down a narrow bottle-neck and more than 150,000 Axis troops are believed to be in danger of isolation if the soviet forces can continue their westward drive. It is thought that a number of Germans have managed to escape the trap but this does not lessen the importance of the Soviet advance.
Large quantities of German artillery have fallen into Soviet hands and many prisoners have been taken. The enemy dead is placed at a very high figure and special Russian forces are remaining in the rear to bury them.
Surprise Attack
To the south and south-west of Stalingrad Soviet troops are still moving forward in spite of desperate German efforts to stem the advance.
To the west of the city Russian forces launched a surprise blow and inflicted heavy losses on the enemy.
Forging Ahead
The Red Army is forging ahead in the middle Don area, and south-west of Velikie Luki the capture of several inhabited localities is claimed.
78TH U.S. CONGRESS OPENED
Senator Sam Raeburn of Texas was again elected Speaker of the House of Representatives by a majority of 11 votes over Senator Martin of Massachusetts, when the 78th Congress of the United States was opened in Washington yesterday.
Thousand of Bills will be dealt with during the session.
PRESIDENT LEBRUN MYSTERY
The Fighting French radio at Brazzaville stated yesterday that President Lebrun had arrived in north Africa.
Rallying Effect
This was denied in London although it was pointed out that if the President did reach north Africa it would have a great rallying effect on all Frenchmen everywhere.
12,000 TONS OF BOMBS ON MALTA DURING 1942
More than 12,000 tons of bombs were dropped on Malta during 1942 by Axis aircraft, it was revealed yesterday. In reply the island ground and air defences destroyed 955 enemy aircraft, and there were 300 “probables.” R.A.F. fighters destroyed 773 of the planes, while 182 were shot down by ground defences. R.A.F. losses were 195 planes, but the pilots of 89 were saved.
Convoy Attacks
In addition, island-based planes attacked 46 enemy convoys, 6 single ships and 5 naval vessels. More than 50 ships were definitely sunk and 40 probably sank after attacks. Eighty-three ships were set on fire and their cargoes destroyed.
BRITISH NEARING MISURATA
An unconfirmed report by Radio Morocco says that the British Eighth Army is on the outskirts of Misurata, 125 miles from Tripoli and less than 200 miles from the Tunisian border.
[underlined] SOUTH-WEST PACIFIC [/underlined]
JAPANESE SHIPS BLASTED IN RABAUL RAID
Allied aircraft made a very heavy raid on Japanese shipping concentrations at Rabaul on Tuesday, according to a south-west Pacific report. The planes attacked in two waves and bombed the targets from medium height, destroying nine and probably ten Japanese ships, totalling more than 50,000 tons. They were set on fire with direct hits and when last seen were in a sinking condition.
Seven Planes Destroyed
Munda, on New Georgia island, and Bougainville were also attacked by Allied planes. Seven Japanese planes were destroyed during the raids for the loss of two American fighters.
Japanese Fleet Massing
Messages from the south-west Pacific indicate that the Japanese are massing a large fleet in the Solomons – New Britain area for another attempt to land troops on Guadalcanal to try to seize Henderson airfield.
NEW EASTERN STATES’ PETROL AND OIL FUEL CUTS
The O.P.A. announced in Washington yesterday that all pleasure motoring will cease on the eastern seaboard from noon on Thursday.
Heating Cuts
Heating fuel cuts in the eastern States are expected shortly and it was stated yesterday that people would have to decide between running their cars or heating their houses.
Massachusetts Shortage
Oil fuel is reported to be so low in Massachusetts, says a Boston message, that many houses and apartments will be soon untenable.
United States shipyards are now launching four merchant ships daily and by May the figure will be raised to five a day.
ODDS AND ENDS
PETS
A column in a London newspaper headed “Unlovable Pets: No. 1, The Goat”, ended: “Goat’s milk is very rich, nutritious, unappetising and obnoxious. It turns red litmus paper blue. So do goats,”
At the foot of the column was added: “(Tomorrow – No. 2: Pierre Laval.)”
[symbol] “He made his bed, now he’s lying out of it.”
EMBARRASING
A man was troubled by an inability to remember names, at times even those of old friends. He was dining one day and looked up from his newspaper to see a familiar face. But the name escaped him.
He stood, shook hands warmly with the man, and said: “How are you, where have you been? Will you join me?” and other polite remarks while he was trying to recall the name.
“I’m the waiter, sir,” said the embarrassed fellow.
[symbol] Married life is like a bath – not so hot after you get used to it.
COULD BE
Golfing on links adjoining the Paramount studios, Bob Hope passed a set where a Western mob scene was being filmed. The crowd of extras, ugly, tough, unshaven, had little to do except shout and shake their fists.
“Paramount shareholders, I presume,” said Hope to his companions.
[symbol] “Her waist, like the Equator, is an imaginary line.”
BLOOD CURDLING
A practical joker stepped into a hotel elevator with a friend and began talking as though continuing a conversation: “So I turned on the light and there was this girl in the middle of the floor. Her throat was slit and there was a great puddle of blood. Beside the body was a knife. I was in a spot. If I called the police, there’d be a nasty row, and if I didn’t somebody’d find me there. So I took out my handkerchief and carefully . . .”
At this point the elevator stopped and the two men stepped out, leaving everybody in the car goggle-eyed with astonishment.

FIRST NIGHT OF THE PROMS Recording of Friday’s opening concert, Berlioz’s Requiem, conducted by Colin Davis. (Sat. B B C 1, 9.20)
A SAD ex-airman who spent his nights dressing salads in a cafe and his days playing Glenn Miller records in a Pimlico basement gave producer David Naden the idea for [italics] If I Don’t Come Back – Have A Drink On Me [/italics] (ITV Tuesday).
He set off to trace the seven-man crew of a war-time Lancaster bomber, and when all official channels failed he found them. By accident.
He reunited them on their old airfield in Lincoln, and the RAF produced another Lanc. The result: Air pictures, war talk and, of course, some old bomber-raid film. Just the stuff to set the oldies talking. But it could, I fear, fall flat with the youngsters.

They did come back
TELEVISION date to remember this month is Tuesday, July 15 at 10.30 p.m. on all ITV networks. The programme is a 50 minute documentary called “If I don’t come back, have a drink on me.”
It was made by Granada at Waddington to film the only operational Lancaster bomber left in the world, B for Betty, and the first complete crew reunion of O for Oboe since they last flew together 25 years ago, having completed a full tour of 30 bombing missions.
One member of the crew, Sgt Stan Attwood, is still in the RAF. But see the documentary for yourself on July 15.

The last Lancaster: Granada’s “If I Don’t Come Back – Have a Drink on Me,” which is networked on Tuesday, is the story of the men who flew O for Oboe during the war. Oboe was later shot down, and the plane used in the programme is actually B for Bertie, the last surviving Lancaster at R.A.F. Waddington, Lincolnshire.

10.30 IF I DON’T COME BACK – HAVE A DRINK ON ME
During the last war a bomber crew had some 5 per cent chance of surviving a tour of 30 operations intact. One crew which did was pilot Les Creed’s: Ross Elder, Don Groscop, Len Hogben, Claude Horn, Stan Attwood and Rilwyn Evans, and, of course, Flying Officer Creed, then aged 21, and skipper of Lancaster O for Oboe.
In tonight’s documentary, with a D.F.C. and three D.F.M.’s between them, they are reunited at R.A.F. Waddington, Lincolnshire, to look back 25 years.
On reflection, they considered themselves “pretty average – nobody walked out on the wing to put a fire out,” but nevertheless, the work, experiences and relationships of that short, intense period of mutual danger and mutual trust has remained with them, much of it in contrast to what they are doing today : storeman, purchasing executive, company director, works manager, washing machine mechanic, police sergeant – and in one case, R.A.F. stores [deleted] corporal. [/deleted] [inserted] Sergeant! [/inserted]
How far has their wartime comradeship and valour “gone for a Burton”?

THE LANCASTER HEROES GET TOGETHER AGAIN
The chances of an entire RAF wartime bomber crew surviving a tour of operations were 20-1 against. One crew which did survive was reunited by Tuesday’s documentary [italics] If I Don’t Come Back, Have A Drink On Me [/italics]. And at Waddington RAF Station in Lincolnshire, they met another old friend – a Lancaster bomber
TWENTY-FIVE years is a long time. As the train from London headed north towards Lincoln, Ross Elder, storeman at a cement works near Leighton Buzzard, thought : “I seem to know that fellow.”
Don Groscop, purchasing executive with a motor company, thought: “I know I’ve seen him before, but where was it?” On the tarmac at Waddington RAF Station, the two men came face to face again. And then they remembered.
Victor and Vulcan bombers tore down the runway with an ear-splitting crescendo of sound. When their heads were cleared of the noise they looked across to one of the airfield’s dispersal points and there, its four Merlin engines silent, they saw it – the Lancaster, the RAF’s most effective night bomber in World War II.
Though the Lancaster in Tuesday’s programme has never flown in anger, its letters, KM-B, are those of one of the most famous Lancasters that ever flew from Waddington on a bombing mission. Its pilot, Sq. Ldr. John Nettleton, won the Victoria Cross.
In the winter and spring of 1944 a Lancaster with the call sign O for Oboe brought Elder and Groscop closer together than either had been to another man in his young life – except the other five men in the aircraft.
While Groscop, working at his charts, provided the only light in the bomber’s darkened fuselage, Elder, in the mid-upper gun turret, scanned the sky for German night fighters.
After their tour of duty, Flying Officer Les Creed (pilot) was awarded the D.F.C. Flt. Sgt. Len Hogben (bomb-aimer) and Sgt. Groscop and Sgt. Claude Horn (wireless operator) received the D.F.M.
Twenty-five years is a long time, and now many things have changed. Bomb-aimer Hogben only gave instructions to skipper Creed when the Lancaster was making its run in to the target. Now Hogben is boss of a firm which makes tinplate containers, and Creed is his works manager.
Horn services washing machines. Flight Engineer Stan Attwood tried civilian life. For seven years he worked in hospital management in Nottingham, but got fed up. In 1954 he rejoined the RAF and went to Singapore as stores corporal.
Rear-gunner Irlwyn Evans, now a police sergeant at Aberystwyth, stood by the rear turret of the grounded Lancaster at Waddington and looked at the turret through which he pointed his four Browning 303s.
The reunion had an acute moment of frustration when, with Waddington commanding officer Group Captain Arthur Griffiths at the controls, the Lancaster took off and made several low runs across the airfield.
Creed felt he could have done the job himself. And Hogben added: “And he could, too. And what’s more, if he did we’d all go with him.”

MOON MEN’S TEARS
[underlined] TELEVISION ROSEMARY SAY [/underlined]
WHATEVER doubts one may or may not have about te ethics of the moon venture, it is essential to understand something about the technical side of the business.
I hope it has not escaped the notice of those who are as hopelessly unscientific as I am that two of the B.B.C.’s “Apollo Space” studio team, James Burke and Patrick Moore, have been allotted time off from their progress reports to answer children’s questions on how it all works.
How do the “different bits” that make up the Apollo 11 function? We were through that in no time with a model. Why is it chemically fired and not atomically? What will it push against in space? (Try [italics that [/italic] one). But best of all was “What will happen in the astronaut’s tears if they cry?” The answer is that the tears will float around the cabin. And if they cry a lot they will be swimming in tears. The seven-year-old girl who sent in the question must have sensed that Lewis Carroll was as much aware of the hazards of space travel as Jules Verne.
Both B.B.C. and I.TV. came up with some sticky emotional stuff in their moon commentating for the grown-ups. One I.TV. chap choked on “Man who is born and lived all his life on this earth . . . now . . .” Another I.TV. beauty was “The Americans are about to light a tremendous candle here this morning”. The B.B.C. countered later with “God’s in His Heaven and man is on his way there”. We also had “computers ticking like heart beats” and one of the astronauts “had already come a long way – from log cabin to space capsule”.
It might be said to have helped to put some human feeling into this terrifying affair. Heaven knows there is not much. Certainly not in John Mansfield’s brilliantly written and produced documentary, Out of This World (B.B.C.1), showing the career of Wernher von Braun, the man who designed the Saturn rockets and who is the brain behind past and future American space projects. He also designed the V-2’s that blasted savagely into London in 1944 killing or maiming nearly 10,000 people. We saw the notorious Peenemünde base, the rockets streaking across the Channel, von Braun and his team confidently surrendering to the Americans, and being quickly despatched to New Mexico to continue their research.
Now a respected and influential American citizen with some of his German colleagues still working with him, von Braun talked guttural fluency of nuclear rockets carrying men to Venus in the next 20 years.

NOSTALGIA for the kind of companionship that only seems generated in war-time by a communal danger has been worked almost to death in the last 25 years.
But Granada’s documentary If I Don’t Come Back – Have a Drink On Me managed successfully to resuscitate the emotion by tracking down the members of a bomber crew and taking them back to their old base in Lincolnshire. Middle-aged, balding, the seven men started off awkwardly, a forlorn group silhouetted against a bleak sky-line, until the only surviving Lancaster bomber came zooming down over their heads. They then remembered, with a growing despair for their lost youth and the inability to hold on to the feeling that once existed between them. I’m not sure how wise it is to stir all this up for the people concerned, but the experience was moving for the viewer.

The colour of Space
TELEVISION OSCAR TURNILL
[unrelated text]
We shall have to put aside one day our consciousness of the war and the late enemy: perhaps we have already begun to do so. What came through Granada’s exercise in nostalgia, If I Don’t Come Back – Have a Drink on Me, was that a Lancaster bomber crew of the 1940s, tracked down in middle age, have no recollection of the lust of battle. What they feel now is awe and pity at the scale of the destruction in which they had to share, and respect for one another.
David Naden, the director, was so right to interview them separately, and then inter-cut. The years between weren’t able to intrude; they still knew one another as they were then. And we could see that all equally lived in the present.

‘Mercy’ Flight To His Stricken Brother
IN a last-minute attempt to save the life of Signalman Robert Curnock (23), second son of Mr. and Mrs. D. Curnock, of 59, Minehead-street, Leicester, his brother Richard, a Warrant Officer in the RAF, has been flown from Italy to the stricken soldier’s bedside in a hospital near Cairo.
Mrs. Curnock told a “Leicester Mercury” reporter that Army doctors hope the brothers’ reunion may just tip the scales in Robert’s favour.
“My three sons, Sam, Bob and Dick, have all served in the war,” she said. “Sam, the eldest, held the rank of Second Officer in the RAF. It was a special rank and the nature of his secret duties has never been revealed to me. Four years ago he was reported missing, presumed dead.
“Bob, the second son, has been lying dangerously ill through typhoid fever and complications, since July. He is due for demobilisation, and should be home on release leave now.
“The Army doctors say there is ‘some hope’ for Bob, and we are praying that his brother’s visit will save his life.”
Mrs. Curnock said that should her son take a turn for the worse, she expects to be flown to Cairo.
Tribute to Staff
She added that the hospital staff had been “wonderfully kind” to her.
“I had 15 letters from them last week. They came from the doctors, the matron, and the nurses. They are absolutely fighting for Bob’s life. I think it is marvellous.
“When Dick arrived from Italy they insisted he should stay at the hospital instead of having the expense and inconvenience of an hotel in Cairo.
Mr. Curnock is a retired detective inspector in the LNER.

Robert Curnock was employed in the laboratory of the British United Shoe Company, while the youngest brother, Richard, was also employed in a laboratory of a Leicester shoe factory.
University College Extension Plans
A special committee is to be set up by Leicester City Council to report on possible sites for extensions to the University College.
A notice of motion to this effect presented by Alderman C.R. Keene, was carried at last night’s meeting of the Council.
Alderman Keene added that among the sites under consideration was one which, while not actually part of Victoria Park, was “between the existing University College site and the De Montfort Hall.”

Reaping the Whirlwind
The power of the Royal Air Force has been manifested over the week-end in the greatest air assault ever launched. Attacks on Friday night upon munition works in the Paris suburbs were on a large scale and enormous damage is admitted by the Vichy reports. They were, however, eclipsed by Saturday night’s battering of the factories in the Ruhr and the Rhineland. Over a thousand bombers were employed and the attack makes even the raids on Rostock and Lübeck seem almost minor affairs. The attack was mainly on Cologne. It lasted only an hour and a half, but during that time British aircraft bombed their objectives at intervals of only six seconds. It gives some idea of the scale of the operation to remember that in the biggest of the raids upon Great Britain in 1940 and 1941 the Germans never used more than six hundred aeroplanes; and these, though they had to fly a much shorter distance, carried a much smaller bomb load than the bigger and more modern machines now used by the R.A.F.
The whole attack was most skilfully planned. While the bombers were on their way to Germany large numbers of other bombers and fighters attacked the aerodromes from which night fighters might have been sent to intercept the raiding force on the way out and back. They brought down several enemy aeroplanes, and it was probably due in great measure to them that, in spite of the moonlit night, the losses were light in comparison with the weight of the attack. Great numbers of British aircraft have been sent, and will continue to be sent, to Russia to reinforce our allies in their great struggle on the Eastern front. The R.A.F. in the Middle East has been and is still being steadily increased. Spitfires which have recently arrived are now taking part in the fighting over the Western desert. In spite of all this dispersal, the force of the blows which can be delivered from home bases has grown in a fashion which must inspire trepidation among those against whom they are directed. And this is only the beginning. With the cooperation of American airmen the attacks upon German factories, ports, and railways during the coming summer and autumn will become devastating. MR. CHURCHILL in his congratulations to Bomber Command described the operations of Saturday night as “the herald of “what Germany will receive, city by city, “from now on.”
A German [italics] communiqué [/italics] describes the attack upon Cologne merely as “a terror “raid,” and belittles its effects in much the same way as it belittled the damage done at Rostock and Lübeck. It is safe to say that when the full reports are received the destruction done in Cologne will be found to have been on an even greater scale. The Germans are now learning in their own homes and their own cities, something of the loss and suffering which they have inflicted upon the civilian populations of other lands. Ever since they loosed war upon the world two and a half years ago they have boasted of the havoc wrought by the Luftwaffe and of the terror it inspired. They have gloated over what they did to Warsaw, Rotterdam, and Belgrade. They even made films of some of their greatest crimes for the delectation of patriotic Germans and as a warning to other nations to be careful not to incur the displeasure of the master race. It was part of German diplomacy abroad to exhibit such films in order to terrorize neutral countries into compliance with every German demand. HITLER himself threatened that the cities of England would be “wiped out” if the British people continued to stand up to him. By a long series of terror raids he did his best to carry out his threat, and there is hardly a city in Great Britain which does not bear the marks of his savagery. Now that the striking power is passing from the Luftwaffe to the R.A.F. Germany will begin to realize the folly she committed in entrusting her destinies to him and his comrades in crime.
“REPRISAL” RAID ON CANTERBURY
CHURCHES AND SCHOOLS DESTROYED
The streets of Canterbury were strewn with rubble and filled with fire pumps, many of which were brought from surrounding districts, yesterday after the Germans had made what they described as a “reprisal” raid on Sunday night.
Some 50 enemy aircraft flew overland, about half that number attacking the city. Three were shot down, one over the coast and two over their own aerodromes.
Among the casualties were the town clerk and his wife, who were trapped in their damaged house. Both were extricated, but the town clerk died on the way to hospital, where his wife now lies injured.
The fire services and Civil Defence, helped by neighbouring districts, worked magnificently and the fires were soon under control. Fire caused considerable destruction in a shopping centre and residential property suffered in the indiscriminate bombing. Two churches, a newspaper office, and two schools were among the buildings destroyed.
The Archbishop of Canterbury and Mrs. Temple, who were in Canterbury during the raid, are safe. The Archbishop visited people in the town yesterday and inspected the damage.
The Air Ministry and Ministry of Home Security report yesterday morning said:-
Shortly after midnight enemy aircraft made a raid on a town in south-eastern England. Most of the damage caused was in a shopping and residential district, in which some fires were started. A number of casualties have been reported.
Three raiders were destroyed during the night, one off our coast and two over enemy aerodromes in occupied territory.
