Luftpost 25 September 1943
The special edition covers Winston Churchill’s statement of 21st September 1943 to parliament on the war.
Churchill describes the war’s progress in North-West Africa, a springboard to further offensive action, following conferences with President Franklin D. Roosevelt in June 1942 in Washington and January 1943 in Casablanca. Erwin Rommel has been repulsed by Generals Alexander and Montgomery and Tunisia conquered. Following a further conference in Washington in May 1943, Sicily was captured in 38 days.
Churchill had also spoken to Stalin in Moscow. Russian armies have advanced 1,600 miles of the front.
Map showing changes to the frontline on the eastern front.
An ever increasing Anglo-American control of the air and expansion of Air Forces. Increased RAF air operations were increasingly accurate with reduced losses. A systemic destruction of German war production was taking place, which was diverting Germany from offensive capabilities.
Germany was likely to retaliate with new methods and weapons and Churchill would keep the House informed of how this would be addressed.
Map showing where German air defence will be forced to defend against offensives from West and South.
Describes how the U-boats have become less of a threat because of success of air operations and new ship building.
Quebec conference discussed the offensive against Japan in the Pacific with General Douglas MacArthur getting good results. Reduction in Japanese ships, air power and supplies.
25th July 1943 memorable date as Benito Mussolini deposed and the Badaglio government was created. Armistice signed in Syracuse on night of 3rd September 1943. Churchill expresses sympathy for the Italian population; they will become a free democracy. The German population have, however, caused three wars and Churchill stresses the need to destroy Nazi tyranny and Prussian militarism.

Eine Botschaft des Oberbefehlshabers der britischen Kampfflugzeuge an das deutsche Volk
Air Marshal Arthur Harris, Commander-in-Chief of Bomber Command, sends a message to the German people. He describes the reversal of roles: Germany is now experiencing what British cities have experienced. The RAF is conducting an extensive campaign at all times on German cities to stop the war. Supplies of aircraft have increased substantially with huge production in the United States. The focus is on military targets but collateral civilian casualties have occurred in Britain and Germany. British aircraft losses are less than 5%. The first American squadrons have arrived in Britain and they are producing planes in Detroit which can drop 4 tons of bombs on German cities. To end the war, the Germans need to overthrow the Nazis. They will make it impossible for Germany ever to start another war.

Frage: wie viele sind hier aufmarschiert? Antwort: 330000 Mann
Propaganda Leaflet C17
Claims Hitler has not talked about losses in Russia since 11 December (162,000 German soldiers dying in 162 days). Compares this to the lack of information and incorrect numbers given after the Poland Campaign. Hitler now having to use other groups and nationalities to replace those killed. Not the promised speedy victory.
Death toll conservatively estimated to be at least four times the 330,000 men shown in the photograph.
Concludes by saying the answer to how many are still marching to their deaths lies with the German people.

Aus der letzten April - Woche 1942
Propaganda Leaflet G42
In last week of April 1942, Luftwaffe and RAF bombing are compared as well as Hitler’s announcement now and from 1941. Contrasting statements from American (R F Watt) and German (Sauckel) on availability of workers.
Extract from Ludendorff’s ‘Kriegserinnerungen’ commenting on how Entente Powers were able to build their armaments and workforce. Protracting the war had meant defeat was inevitable for Germany.

Contrasts Germany after the First World War with the present, exhorting Germans to save their country. By drawing things quickly to a conclusion, Germany could avoid more destruction and successfully rebuild.

Eichenlaubträger Generalfeldmarschall Paulus an die Deutsche Wehrmacht und das Deutsche Volk
A call from the German Field Marshall Friedrich Paulus to his comrades and to the German people via radio 'Freies Deutschland' while he is a prisoner of war in Russia. After a call for reflection in August 1944 he feels he has to speak again despite being reluctant . He talks of the lies about the battle of Stalingrad spread by Hitler and Himmler on German radio - not cowardice but lack of supplies forced the German Army to surrender at Stalingrad. The atrocities inflicted by Himmler to many people and nations are in contrast to the way in which the Russians treat German prisoners of war. Thousands of imprisoned Germans troops, including high ranking and decorated officers, have joined in a call to the German military and civilians to end this war and get back to peace and freedom.
The text ends with a multilingual appeal to pass the flyer to the Germans.

Interview with Helmut Köhler
Helmut Köhler (b. 1928) recalls his wartime experience as Luftwaffenhelfer. He provides a first-hand account of two attacks on Kassel, the first on the 22 October 1943 and the second in March 1944. He describes his time spent inside the air-raid shelter; how he helped extinguish fires; the destruction of schools and the entire old town being razed to the ground. He also discusses everyday life in an anti-aircraft unit, the process of matching skills to roles, training, and anti-aircraft fire. He mentions being posted to a special deployment unit as a punishment for noncompliance, following which he was re-trained on quadruplet anti-aircraft guns at the Eder dam. He briefly talks about the breaching of the Eder dam and the ensuing flood wave. Helmut Köhler recalls Russian and French prisoners of war manning flak batteries. He describes an unexploded bomb in his house on new year’s eve 1944. He stresses that Luftwaffenhelfer freed up soldiers for combat roles and highlights how the replacement ratio was almost 1:1. He mentions his first encounter with American troops in Gudensberg at the end of the war.

German night fighter pilots report
Records his sortie against the bomber force attacking Heilbron on the night of 4/5 December 1944. Eric Pick flew on that operation.
