Dear Mum,
I intended enclosing this surplus cash last time but forgot. Don’t like carrying it around. Would you ask Dave to get some more certificates if he is up again? There should be £7. there. Should be saving a lot more now on 7/6 a day & with nothing to spend it on.
Nothing at all to write about. Its [sic] pouring with rain as usual. Have written to Harry and Ros & enclosed letter.
Looking forward to seeing you in a few month’s time.
Love to all

Dear Mum,
Just got your letter. If I hurry up with this I shall get it off on tonight’s post. Afraid I shan’t be in Newark until 11.30 pm on Saturday. It does seem crazy as I shan’t know what to do with myself all Saturday but orders are that we are only allowed to travel on the 5.30 from here. I may be able to disappear & get the bus to Lewes & catch an earlier train there.
Had our Navigation Theory & Met. Papers today. The Nav. Paper was extremely hard, but the met was a treat. Tomorrow morning we get plotting – and the medical in the afternoon. I passed in all the practical subjects
Looks like being a massed Christening!
Must get this posted, & then some tea.
Looking forward to a week’s rest Think we may be home for 3 weeks after that.
See you 11.30 Sat night.

Tues. 7.4.42.
Dear Mum,
Decided to come home on Friday after all – just couldn’t keep away – so I’ll be on the 11.20 ar [sic] Newark on Friday night. If there’s nobody to meet me I can easily hitch-hike home. I’ll be coming home on 7 days a fortnight on Saturday I expect.
Hope you all had a good Easter. Did the girls get to Warsop? I did wish I could have been home for Easter – even more than Christmas. Still I guess plenty of people would have been glad to be here for Easter. Eastb. was quite crowded over the weekend. Weather was grand. Went to chapel twice on Sun. & a walk over the downs in the afternoon. Worked all Sat. and Monday as usual. Had all the holiday crowds watching us do P.T. yesterday afternoon. I quite had stage fright. We thought of going round with the hat!
Must get on with some work – see you Sat. Hope you’re not going out anywhere.

At last managed to find out definitely about Posting. There’s a posting of 132 observers to E’bn tomorrow morning but I’m the only one of our crowd included. Only about 10 from our flight going. Why I’m included so soon I don’t know but its [sic] annoying to think that I’ll be separated from the others. That means that [deleted] none [/deleted] I’m left with more of the old “A” flight from [indecipherable word].
Still no letters this morning. Think they must have lost it.
Will send new address immediately I know it.

Tues [inserted] ? 28th [/inserted]
Dear Mum,
Got your letter at the end of week. Was beginning to look out for one. Yes I got Mary’s parcel, suppose she has my letter by now.
Writing this just before going out for games. Its sleeting nicely so it will be fun in singlet & shorts! Feeling in very good form at the moment – getting on well with the course, feeling in the best of health and – what’s better it won’t be long – we all hope – before I come on leave. Flight Lt. Dickey gathered us together this morning and told us with a beaming face that we’d all passed Maths. and Gas Exams. I got 87% in Gas and 84% in Maths so I’m quite satisfied. We get the rest of our Exams a month as this week. We’ve started Navigation and so far its extremely easy & I like doing it. If I fail as pilot I shall be perfectly happy as an observer. Their’s is really the harder job. Getting on quite nicely at Signals & can take down 7 – 8 words a minute pretty
[page break]
easily. Aircraft Rec. should be easy for me. We did a test the other day with another flight who were taking the Exam the next day and I got 85% right which means an easy 100% mark. I happened to have bought [deleted] all the [/deleted] a lot of the photographs we got in a book so it was memory more than knowledge that helped me. The worst subject we’re taking is Air Force Law. I’ve already a book full of notes and there’s plenty to come. We’ve got to get through to get our LAC but we can take it again if we fail. I should manage it first time. Hygiene’s quite interesting – all about Camp Sites, lats, cookhouses, tell Mary; as well as hygeine [sic] in the Tropics and health conditions when flying. The other subject is knowing a machine gun off by heart. We get our Navigation Exam on Nov 21 I believe and [deleted] I [/deleted] its usual to catch a train that same night for a week’s leave.
[underlined] Later. [/underlined] Have just got Mary’s letter at tea-time. A few minutes left before reporting for Guard Duty, so will finish this. I should think I did feel down in the dumps last weekend. Who wouldn’t? Fortunately it didn’t last long. But with only 3 weeks to go before leave and with everything looking bright & 3 exams
[page break]
[underlined] 3 [/underlined]
finished behind me I’m feeling on top form. Its going to be a fag getting out of this lost spot. I suppose I’ll have to get to Birmingham & then change lines – get the L.M.S. I suppose. We talk & think about leave a goodish lot now! I expect when it comes to Nav. Exam we’ll be too excited thinking about [deleted] lea [/deleted] leave to concentrate on the paper!
I met the old friend of Miss Holmes at Chapel last Sunday morning – a very shy old gentleman with a beard who didn’t know what to do with me so he handed me over to the Minister whos [sic] [inserted] wife [/inserted] inviteded [sic] me to tea in the afternoon. We had quite a party. He had 3 young children & a German refugee girl studying at the University, 2 girl students, 1 male student, 1 soldier & me.
Please thank Mary for very interesting letter. Glad you’ve got another Ferdie. Give my love to Auntie & Peter if they come on Sunday. Guinea fowls will go down very well. Perhaps [deleted] we [/deleted] you’d better have Lucy as well, in case I’m not home for Xmas. I think it’s the 21st. Anyway it’s a Friday about then. Gosh I can hardly believe it’s so near. Time flies when your so busy. Hope the weather’s good – By the way nearly forgot – We get our flying kit in a week or two. Think if it’s cold I shall come home
[page break]
in a nice fur lined leather jacket and furlined boots – what a hope! I believe we can wear them for guards.
Well getting on for guard time must press my flash which I’ve just washed also been giving buttons & boots an extra polish. Will you have cleaning stuff at home - & any brylcream left? Must look ornamental at home anyway. We have to be perfect here. Ours is the Show Squadron & we’re the show flight. Sorry about Mrs. Baines. I must write.
Best of love see everybody very soon (I hope!?!)
[underlined] Bill [/underlined]

Dear Mum,
Glad to get your letter yesterday. Thought I’d better get this off tonight as its my turn for guard tomorrow and I shall want to spend all the spare time I have then swotting for our wretched Gas Exam on Monday morning. I shall be quite an Air Raid Warden by the time I’ve finished.
At the moment I’m in a very bad state of health. Reason being that we had another (2 more in fact) innoculations [sic] on Friday morning. These two [deleted] were [/deleted]
[page break]
[underlined] 2 [/underlined]
were double the strength of the last one, and we got them in the right arm. In the afternoon I began to feel the effects & by the time all our lectures were over I’d had enough & as soon as we’d had tea we went to bed. It gives us a terrible fever, though the first one didn’t affect me. This one hasn’t made me as bad as some of them but it’s made me feel very miserable & wretched. Our arms are badly swollen & painful & I’m dreading meeting an officer for I can no more salute than walk on my head. We had to turn up for maths this morning but were excused lectures & everything else after 10.30. so I spent a nice quiet day cutting out photos of airoplanes [sic] & sticking them on the wall. We’ve just come down to the Canteen
[page break]
[Royal Air Force crest]

It sounds to be getting winterly at home. I should think all seasons are pretty much a like here. Same old green and grey mountains year in, year out. I shall be glad to see some fields & trees and soil again. Bet the Caravan will take some chucking out. Glad you had a little outing & went to see Bitter Sweet whatever that is. Wonder if you can manage a brace of pheasants for when I come home on leave? Getting a bit tired 99 1/2% bread sausages & mince & potatoes.
Must get on with my gas. Think about me on Monday & Maths. on Wednesday. Sooner have an inoculation!
Best of love
Bill.
[inserted] Dave tells me he’s had his medical & next has to have an interview with an Admiral at Cambridge. It’s a much harder course than ours [/inserted]
