Dear Doris
I was pleased to receive your letter [and] photo. You appear to still kindle hope that Monty will return but from what the Air Ministry has told me I think it is a rather forlorn one.
They tell me he was buried in the (cemetery at OTTERNHAGEN in the district of Neustadt and [indecipherable word], Westphalia, Germany but the number of the grave was not stated. His mothers[sic] stone was recently erected so I had his name placed on the side of it. I am enclosing an enlargement of a scrap which came back in his wallet. Should be pleased to receive the one you mention. My daughters think it would be nice if you could arrange to visit us one weekend. They would much like to meet you. The eldest daughter had a bonny baby son some two months ago and that would be what Monty was speaking of when he told of being an uncle.
Well Doris his estate has been settled
[page break]
Think of him and the many happy days we used to have fishing together. It was our one hobby. Once again thanking you very much for writing to me and it will always be a pleasure to hear from you.
Good Night & God Bless.
Yours very sincerely

March 18th/44
Dear Doris
It is with a broken heart that I am writing to tell you of a telegram received from Air Ministry yesterday afternoon a few hours after receiving my dear boys suit case of belongings. The content of the telegram reads “Deeply regret to advise you that according to information received through the International Red Cross Committee your Son Sergt: E.M.J Pease is believed to have lost his life as result of Air operation on 2/1/44. The Air Council express their profound sympathy – Letter follows shortly – How very much against our cherished hopes – but if it is Gods Will we must hold to the inevitable. Needless to mention his Sisters are like myself broken hearted – It was a very painful duty sorting out & checking his belongings which has to be done to send a receipt to Slough. One thing I can’t understand Doris is the question of the £24.0.3 which you mentioned was included among them – There was no trace in the case and his poor wallet was empty. Strangely Too in the original inventory from Slough no money was mentioned –
[page break]
Perhaps you may be able to further enlighten & guide me in this matter. I found a lovely snap of dear Monty in Private life and which I am going to get enlarged for the family ties and of course you will be included.
By way of a little comfort I should like to hear from you soon and don’t forget to thank your Mother for the lovely letter she wrote to me. I feel [indecipherable word] not having answered it but she will understand my mind has been preocupied [sic].
My daughters join with me in expressing their kindest & sincerest wishes
From Father
I still feel a glimmer of hope

Dear Mrs Wright & Doris
It was extremely kind & thoughtful of you to send the paper on. Naturally we read it with great interest. I re echo your remarks of these lads sacrifice so that we may live but I have so many times remarked in conversations “If they could only see” what we are experiencing. I have at last received news of Montys[sic] final resting place so am enclosing the Air Ministry letter so that you can note particulars. I am looking forward to the day when I shall be able to pay a visit.
I have his oil painting in the dining room showing his dear smile from whatever angle I look. I do miss him so much that I have lost all interest in what was our one sport of fishing. I only wanted him as company. His sisters are all very well. The eldest Lilian has one big son aged 5 and Olive has two - one daughter
[page break]
aged 4 & one son aged 1. Dorothy is still at home with me. I am pleased to say I am keeping fairly fit and still take an interest in gardening.
I feel as you must do how time flies. Fancy Christmas so near again.
We all send our best wishes to you all.
Yours sincerely

write this in reference to my son “Monty” – Yes. I had the news of his being missing on Sunday evening Jan 2nd and strangely enough the previous night I had a dream. A little green Book appeared in front of me and on the cover in white letters were. GOD. IS. LOVE. and on the top corner Monty in Black Letters – As you must realise it was a terrific shock to me and the daughters – but they are as optimistic as you appear to be. For myself [indecipherable words]

he had by him but he did ask me if I could get him a cheap car for purposes around the Drome. I am afraid I cannot get to Lincoln on [indecipherable word] of [indecipherable word] [indecipherable word] , So I should be extremely grateful to you if could clear things at the Drome using this letter as your authority. Perhaps you will be good enough to let me know if this is in order. His number is 1436156.
In the meantime I trust some good news will be forthcoming
