Dear Mr Floyd,
My husband, Sergeant John Valentine, was the navigator of the aircraft of which your son was pilot when they were reported missing after the first big Cologne raid.
My husband was taken prisoner, and in his first letter to me he wrote as follows: -
Luckily I am safe and well, absolutely intact & much [indecipherable word]
I am afraid our Skipper was not so fortunate. Before being forced to bale
[page break]
out we had thirty minutes of hell during which he behaved magnificently. [underlined]Thanks to him [/underlined] most of the crew are alive today with me. Would you ask the camp Padre to send you the address of his parents, for I want to write to them.
I have just received your address from Squadron Leader Hulbert, the chaplain at Scampton and am sending it on to my husband, as he asked, so that he can write to you himself. But at least it will be
[page break]
several months before you can hear from him, so I thought you would like to hear the above high praise of your son’s conduct without any unnecessary delay.
With heartfelt sympathy to you and your wife,
Yours very sincerely,
Ursula Valentine

Darling Johnnie, Still nothing much to report here. I am strictly confined to barracks, to stop me from spending money, so I think the 10/- will see me through. I had a terrific day yesterday, with washing in the morning, gardening pm & ironing evening. However I slept if off & have today turned out the diningroom & am now going out to attack the garden again. There's been no mail worthy of note, - nothing at all. I hope I'll have one from you tomorrow, darling. All my love dear, Ursula

Monday evening, Felmersham
Darling Johnnie Just a short note to let you know we got home in good order this afternoon. There was no trouble in fetching the bike (tho' alas no lift along the road). The house & content are intact and we have got about 4 pints of milk to our credit. Your letter was waiting here, I don't think the section on finance was so terrible. Anyway I think we understand each other on the subject really. It was a lovely weekend, darling, our times together seem to get better & better.
All my love dear, I'll be writing again tomorrow. Yours always, Ursula

My own darling, It seems an awfully long time since I heard from you. True, I had a letter yesterday, but it was written on Tuesday, & I'm wondering whether you've been out since then. Perhaps you'll ring this evening. I had a letter from Vera today saying that Norman had been home on 48 hours leave, with a bad cold. After all, you've had a cold too. He has been on the two trips to Trondheim but on the first their engine caught fire over the North Sea & they had to come back.
I wonder if you played in your tennis match. It's glorious weather for tennis, sunny & not too hot. Do come on leave soon, while it still lasts. Must go & pick Frances up now, she's making suspicious noises. All my love to you, dearest, Ursula

My dearest Johnnie, I'm afraid I've been very bad in not writing to you yesterday. I had a hectic day spring-cleaning the dining room. I washed the walls while Florence did the floor. I carted all the books & the carpet out into the garden & afterwards carried them all in again. In the afternoon I had to take Frances up to the Clinic for her second dose in the anti-diphtheria treatment, & afterwards went to tea with Mrs Hazard, so that I didn't get all the books back on to their shelves again till about 7.30! this afternoon we have been basking in the garden again & Frances has had a glorious time with a bowl full of water on the lawn, in which she had her rubber fish, a cotton reel, wooden spoon & various sorbo balls. I've got considerably damp, as you can imagine, so I took her clothes off & let her have a sunbath for 15 minutes in her birthday suit & sunbonnet. She did look adorable!
Thanks for your most welcome P.C. received yesterday, & a letter today. I'm so glad you are to play tennis, & hope you can get some practice so that you will be on form. I must pop down to post now or I shall miss it. All my love to you, dearest, & good luck! Yours always, Ursula

Lido Monday 10 Nov.
My darling Johnnie, I do so hope you got back to camp safely. I've been thinking about you anxiously all the time – at 11.30 pm.last night hoping you'd reached Paddington; at 6 am. hoping your train would leave to time, at 7 am. hoping you'd safely caught the camp bus or otherwise smuggled yourself in. I do hope you'll let me know as soon as poss how it all went, & whether the night at Banbury was too awful. Needless to say there's not much to report here. It's pouring with rain this morning, not much of a washing-day. It was so lovely to have you home for 24 hours, it always seems twice as long & as important as any ordinary twenty four hours, because nearly every minute is full of active enjoyment of your company.
Goodbye now darling, good luck & I do hope I'll see you soon again, all my love, Ursula

I enclose the card which Nancy & David Blaikley are putting about of the birth of their baby – rather ingenious, isn't it? Tho' the stork looks very evil to me. I don't know if Ardath cigarettes are smokable, but beggars can't be choosers. If you still can't taste it won't matter or they'll do to offer to others.
Yours always, Ursula.

Johnny darling, I apologise most humbly for the accident to your flash – it got into the boil somehow & now looks pretty sick. I only hope you perhaps won't be wearing them much longer? As for the tie, Mrs S seized it & decided it must be repaired, & spent about 3 hours making one tie out of the good parts of your two old ones. I do hope it is wearable now & that the join doesn't show too much. Let me know if its hopeless & I will try to get you another.
With lots of love – longing for you as ever, Ursula

I enclose herewith a new pair of socks which arrived today in a parcel from India. Let me know if they're not long enough & I'll knit on an annexe. Mother also sent a very nice navy cardigan for me, & tea, sugar & butter which I have put into store. I hope you will like “White Cliffs”. It won't take you long to read & is quite jolly & not too deep. You could return it with the next batch of washing. Hope this arrives safely & with all cigarettes intact. They're not all Woodbine in spite of the packets. With lots & lots of love to my dearest, Ursula.

Darling Johnnie, No letter from you today but I expect that's because of there being no sunday collection. I am going to the flicks this afternoon! “Target for Tonight” is on at the Odeon & I simply must see that. Ba is at home today & will look after Frances, & I can just manage to fit it in between feeds. Frances weights 16lb 1oz this week, a gain of 6 oz which is quite enough. She has just discovered her toes & clings on to them as tho' someone is going to take them away. She hasn't put them in her mouth yet. Herewith the LBC book on agriculture. I hope it isn't too out of date now, I can't remember it very clearly. I remember reading it while I was at Thames House.
Lots of love to you darling, I hope the exams have been OK. Yours always Ursula

Darling Johnny, Here are your clean socks, a few more cigarettes & - a most unusual discovery – ½ lb of figs! The shop would only let me have ½ lb & I'm afraid they'll soon all be sold out, however its quite a thrill to get any nowadays.. You can eat them as they are, but they are better if soaked in enough water to cover them overnight, & then stewed gently. They don't need any sugar added. If it's not convenient for the landlady to stew them, you'll find they're very nice just soaked well. Sorry there are not enough to share all round, but I hope you'll choose a day to devour them when your sense of taste has fully returned! I'm sending off “Gone with the Wind” separately by book post & hope you enjoy reading it.
With lots of love & longing to see & her & kiss you again, Yours for ever, Ursula

Lido,
Tenterden Grove,
Hendon, N.W. 4
28th January, 1941
The Borough Treasurer,
Town Hall,
Hendon N.W. 4
Dear Sir, plot No. 142. Archfields Allotments
I am in receipt of your letter of the 27th January (Ref 19h.6.). I am you have been misinformed as regards the terminating date of my tenancy of the above plot, which was not 31st December 1940, as you state, but 25th March 1941. When my husband joined the Royal Air Force he gave due notice of our intention to vacate the plot, and I have your letter of the 24th October 1940 (Ref 19h.3.) in which you acknowledge this.
The misunderstanding may have arisen from the fact that when we notified Mr Thompson, the secretary of the Archfields Allotments, we told him that if he found another tenant for plot 142 before our tenancy expired, this new tenant had our permission to start digging on the empty portions of the plot as soon as he liked provide he left our crops untouched. Unfortunately the new tenant does not seem to be clear that this was a concession on our part in order to help forward next season’s crops, and not a right on his part.
I myself am going away in a few days, and have arranged that the crops remaining on the plot shall be removed as fast as it is humanly possible to eat them by a young widow left with five small children, and I have notified Mr Thompson of this arrangement. However well over half the allotment is already empty, and, since the weather at present is so unsuitable for digging, I am sure the new tenant will find, with a little goodwill, there is plenty of work he can get on with until such time as the remaining crops are cleared, or he enters into possession. Needless to say it would be highly unpatriotic at the present time to dig up crops which are bearing the food which this country so urgently needs merely in order to have the plot looking neat and tidy, quite apart from the fact that the new tenant has no right to touch any of the crops until the 25th March although we have given him permission to dig the empty part of the plot.
Yours faithfully,

Darling Johnnie,
I’m not a bit happy about Frances, she doesn’t seem nearly so well today as yesterday. She got up to breakfast, but started an awful fit of coughing, & made herself sick. Afterwards she started to work on her scrap book, then said she didn’t feel well & went to bed for about an hour. She got up of her own accord about 11 am & seemed better, & this time started doing some painting by the dining room fire, while I went on with my music lesson. But after about 1/2 hour she started crying, I went to her & she complained of a tummy pain. So I suggested she should go to bed again,
[page break]
which she gladly did, must have dropped off to sleep quite quickly & hasn’t woken yet (2 p.m.) She’s obviously far from well. It may only be general weakness after the flu, but when she coughed so this morning & then was sick I began to fear whooping cough, altho’ I haven’t heard any whooping. I think I’ll just keep her quiet for today, & not send for Howard unless there are definite disquieting symptoms. Her temperature is normal.
I listened to “The Way to the Stars” on the radio last night – quite good. Only post this morning was electricity bill (£3.4.11.) – I wonder when the milk permit will come?
Longing to have news from you about your immediate future, I do miss you so darling, come home again soon. Yours always. Ursula.

I had quite a busy time yesterday afternoon, for me. First of all a man came to the door asking if I had any knives to be sharpened or china rivetted. I didn’t care for his face much but thought I’d try him out with one of our collection of broken plates. He charged 1/3 per rivet, so it was 3/9 for the plate (a small one of the dinner service). However he made a good job of it & I told him I might find him some more if he’d come another day (the reason for stalling him off was, or course, financial) Before he’d gone, Mr J. R. Brown arrived with a ton

of crazy paving and four separate slabs, so I paid him by cheque (£2.10.). Then Mrs Harris turned up to say could she be let off this week because the lady whom she’d been “obliging” over Christmas had sent her an SOS to come again. However she is going to book Wednesdays for me & tell this other lady she can’t go to her again on that day. After all this I finished the ironing & we went out to tea with the Noves. Nothing very exciting, except when Frances piped up at tea time “Excuse me, Mrs Nove, but your hair is hanging down in your eyes.” Later she covered up this gaffe by admiring Joan’s dress, but I couldn’t help

chuckling, for her remark about the hair had been only too true. She rather shook me the other day by singing away to herself “Born is the King of Israel, with his bell.bottomed [sic] trousers, coat of navy blue!”
Today the rivetting [sic] gent came again, so as I’d saved 4/6 on Mrs Harris, I gave him the rest of the broken china, one dish, & a plate & saucer of the Suzy Cooper set. [deleted] The [/deleted] He did those (13 rivets in all) for 10/-, so I think that wasn’t bad. Of course in the old days we’d have bought a new service instead, but now its just as well to patch up what we have. Anyway tomorrow is Thursday
[page break]
and I’ve still got 3/-.
Thank you for your letter of yesterday. I note what you say about the insurance & will act accordingly.
I hope you’ll do something soon about seeing an M.O. otherwise I have a feeling you’ll stay where you are for weeks and weeks! Joan asked me to tell you that there is going to be a meeting of the incipient Labour Party at Miss [indecipherable name] house on Friday 8 pm, but I held out little hope of your attending. She said they were going to elect the Committee, but would doubtless co-opt others later, so there’s hope for you still!
Off to Joanna Michell’s Xmas party this afternoon – what a whirl!
Lots of love darling, come home soon. Ursula.

Darling Johnnie,
Your letter of yesterday arrived this morning. I wasn’t expecting one so soon, it was a pleasant surprise. I am glad you managed to get a seat on the train, these Sunday evening trips tend to be rather grim.
I enclose this morning’s correspondence Nothing else has happened much since I wrote yesterday. I went out on SSafa business & met Jean Michelle, & she says her husband thinks he’ll be going to South Africa at the beginning of February, & she & the children may be able to join him within one
[page break]
year, so they’ll be well away. Afterwards I met Joan [inserted] Nove [/inserted] & got invited to tea this afternoon. It beats the monotony for Frances so we accepted. Otherwise nothing much brewing. There’s a children’s ballet due to be performed in the Memorial Hall on Saturday week, 19th & I thought of getting tickets for F & me – I daresay you’re not keen to go are you?
I do hope some doctor or other will condescend to look at you & decide to send you home. You could probably have stayed on for Sunday night without anybody missing you there!
All my love darling.

Felmersham, Jan 7th
Darling Johnnie, I've been in to Gerrards Cross this morning & got my mixing bowl at last. I also got a bank statement & it makes the score £82.9.9. on Dec. 27th. Thirdly I went to see Matron at the Chalfont Nursing Home & have booked a single room at 7 gns per week. They range from 7-14 guineas according to size, but she showed me one, on the ground floor looking out on to the garden, for 7 gns. & it is certainly all one could ask for. They are all single rooms, not wards. So that's not quite so bad as we'd feared. On the other hand
[page break]
there are other charges for the operating theatre & apparatus, anaesthetics etc., which come to about £5. I asked about laundry, & was told the baby's nappies are done there for the inclusive charge, & other clothes can be sent to a woman they employ & charged to us, but it seems quite cheap, 4d for the baby's nightdress, 8d for mine, etc. so it looks as tho' you won't have to spend your evenings washing & ironing! On top of this, of course, is the doctor's bill, & I asked Matron what Haward usually charges & she said about 10 gns. So we shan't have any change out of £309. Is it worth it? It's too late now anyway!
I got off 8 letters last night, which was a
[page break]
relief, I think we've about finished with Christmas now. Another SSAFA job has cropped ;up today, so I must go out this afternoon & get it done. A telegram of congratulations for our wedding anniversary came this morning from the Winters, which was nice of them if slightly late. I did some practise yesterday evening, & found time to read a bit too. But it was very bleak after you'd left. I do hope you'll be home again soon, for a longer stay. I must get the draught excluded painted before then &
[page break]
hope to get a new 2-way adaptor too – on Thursday or later! My mixing bowl was 5/- so I'll have to tread warily. But I think we'll be alright. Of course the postman had to come for his Christmas box today too, I daresay there'll be others following suit.
I hope your journey was not too bad & that the trains connected up according to plan. I look forward to hearing from you on Wednesday.
All my love, darling & come home again soon, Yours always, Ursula
PS Lords do rivetting of china so I shall take some of ours in

My darling Johnnie, I was so glad that you rang up last night. I was feeling a bit blue at the time, & it cheered me up no end. All the young ones went off to the party & seem to have had a whale of a time – they didn't get home till 4 am, while we old fogies played rather dull bridge. Apparently John danced with Ba every dance but one – ceded to his
[page break]
brother Peter, & afterwards came back here drinking soup in the kitchen till nearly 5 am. However he was down bright & early to see Ba off, & has asked for her address in London in case they could have a night out sometime. So we feel things are going well, & both Mothers are as pleased as punch.
The weather here is glorious again with a strong wind blowing, & I wonder whether I needn't have postponed our return. However, it won't really matter,
[page break]
3.
I have cancelled Leverett as I am not sure whether we shall make the connection from Paddington to Marylebone in time to catch the 2.5 (we get to Padd. at 1.30 & might easily be late if the fog persists). So I'll try to get a taxi at Gerrards Cross & ring Leverett when I get there, for I am not going to attempt to carry that heavy case alone now. It's asking for trouble. I am sending off a parcel of stuff this afternoon that I can't get into the suitcase owing to pressure of Xmas presents.
[page break]
I managed to get some oranges for us today, only 4 but better than nothing, & also a bottle of salad dressing, which is always so hard to come by. So we're going home well loaded up. I only hope we arrive according to schedule. It'll be nice to be home in daylight anyway, so we can get fires etc. going a bit earlier. I do hope there's been no frost damage. Most of all I hope that you're going to be home soon after us, my dearest husband.
I have missed you so. Yours always, Ursula
PS I won't be able to write tomorrow I expect

Little Close, Dec 31st
My darling Johnnie, I have had three letters from you today, 28th, 29th this morning, & 30th by this afternoon's post (yesterday Sunday). The postal officials are really doing very well. I'm so glad you are feeling better, & only hope an ENT (I keep wanting to EPT!) specialist comes soon to release you. We shall be home tomorrow evening (God willing) & ready to receive you with open arms any time after that, the sooner the better. I have wired Miss McLeod to order bread & milk for us & Leverett to meet us at Seer Green & hope everything
[page break]
goes according to plan. It will be nice to be home again & when you come I shall be really happy again.
I did ask Peter about the switches & he said the 5 amp ones would be OK for a 2KW fire. I questioned Drag more closely afterwards & gather you can safely overload up to 100% & that with our voltage & a 2 KW fire the load would be 8/9 amps, which Drag says it quite OK. It would eventually burn out sooner than a 10 amp switch but would probably last a couple of years anyway. However if we do get a 2 KW fire for the sitting room it might be worth having a 10 amp switch there, if you'd feel
[page break]
happier, use the 5 amp ones in the bedrooms where we'd have smaller fires. As Peter said the 5 amp ones were OK I wasn't able to ask him to change them.
I like your comments on DH Lawrence. I haven't read any myself, & somehow don't think he'll be at the top of my list of priorities. I am very much enjoying my book on English Literature, I have read the first section so far on the English Bible, & am now immersed in Lord David Cecil's exposition of English Poetry. It is most lavishly illustrated too, with old prints & portraits, a really grand book.
[page break]
I am sending you 1/2lb. Of sugar (a week's ration) & do wish you had mentioned it sooner. I'd have kept you supplied with pleasure. Let me know when this is finished (but I hope you'll be home long before then). I have still got to finish off our packing so must stop now. I shall have to send some of the stuff by post anyway, as usual, we seem to have acquired a lot, mostly Frances's. She has had a lovely time down here, but is looking forward to our second Xmas at home.
All my love, dearest, come home soon, Yours always, Ursula

Little Close Sunday 30/12/45
Darling Johnnie, I am sending you some cuttings from the Times about compensation & betterment, in case they might enlighten you on this knotty problem I wondered if you might come up against later in your work. We have had more glorious sunshine down here, but I feel as tho' I've caught another beastly cold, so I was allowed to have my breakfast in bed. Afterwards we went for a walk on the other side of the
[page break]

estuary & John Winter came to meet us (or rather Ba). This afternoon he has taken her out in his car, & they & the rest of the Winters are coming back here to tea. Tomorrow he drives her to Newton Abbot for a fitting at the tailors & in the evening to the New Year's Eve dance at Thurlestone. He really does seem keen. I don't know that he's good enough for Ba in every way, but he's a very sound chap & I should think they'd be very happy. Let's hope something

comes of it.
Unless I hear anything from you to the contrary, Frances & I will go home on Tuesday with Ba. I do so hope you'll be home a day or two later, Johnny, I wonder what the chances are. You simply must be home for the weekend anyway. Tell Matron I said so!
Mother has been urging me to take some Serocalein to stop these perpetual colds, & I really think it would be worth a trial bottle.
[page break]
I don't want another cold like the last, which cast a gloom over your 6 weeks home, to come & spoil your sick leave too. By the way I asked Ba, before we both came down here, to try to get us tickets for Peter Pan which is now on in London & she got Peggy Goddend to do it for us so we now have 3 stalls (9/- each!) for the matinee on Jan 16th. I haven't told Frances yet, but feel sure she'll be thrilled by it.
I long so much to be with you again, darling, I haven't enjoyed this Xmas a bit without you. Hurry home so that we can live happily ever after. Yours always, Ursula

Little Close, Saturday Dec 29th
Darling Johnnie, thank you for your letter received this morning with the horrid description of the chap swallowing his tongue after having his teeth out. What a warning! We have been enjoying ourselves quietly here. Yesterday Ba & Mrs Winter & Mother went into Newton Abbot to visit the tailor, while Frances & I went for a lovely walk over the other side, past Sunny Cove. There were terrific waves breaking on the rocks & we had a great game on Sunny Cove
[page break]
climbing onto those rocks in the middle of the sands & getting cut off when the waves came in. It was great fun.
There is a flutter of excitement here because John Winter & Ba seem to be getting on remarkably well together. He's taking her to a dance on New Year's Eve, so we're hoping. He's very rich, anyway, & would make a most desirable brother-in-law. I like him very much. We're all going for a walk again this afternoon, it's gloriously sunny & really warm. They say it's going to be colder, with snow in the north, so if there's going to be real frost shall hurry home to look after the pipes!
Yours always, darling Ursula

Little Close Dec 28th
My darling Johnnie, I had three letters from you this morning, as well as speaking to you over the phone, so I feel I've done well. The letters were 24, 25 & 26 December & I gather your Christmas wasn't just a riot of festivities. I hope we shall never be parted for Christmas again – or any other time, for that matter. Our enormous turkey came from a farmer's widow, with whom Mother has always dealt down here – it was ordered shortly after last Christmas!
As regards the music lessons, both Mary Darly & Miss Gunn only go up to Downe (or vice versa) 2 or 3 days a week, & are in London the rest of the time, so that's alright. The lessons would take place in London, in the evenings doubtless. I'm more sorry than I can say to hear that your determination to continue has been shaken. I do hope it wasn't my fault. I think it would be a very great pity indeed if you didn't carry on, I feel we haven't so very much further to go to get through the sticky patch & then we'll really get lots of fun out of it. So you simply mustn't give in & you mustn't let me stop either (tho' I may have to in August) because it will be worth it in the end, I feel sure. We shall never be brilliant, maybe, but in time we may give pleasure, perhaps even to others as well as ourselves.
Mother & Ba have gone with Mrs Winter to Newton Abbot today to visit the tailor so Frances & I are going for a walk over to Sunny Cove this afternoon. It was very noble of you to decide this morning that I shouldn't come to stay near you, for I know you would have liked it, but were doubtless considering me. Of course if you are really to be home sometime next week then that is the best solution to the problem. Other things being equal, we shall probably travel up with Ba on Tuesday, that will give us a day or two to prepare for your arrival. I do hope you'll be home by the 6th at the latest, I should be sick if we miss that anniversary too.
All my love to you darling, Yours always, Ursula

Little Close, Dec 27th
My darling Johnnie, there was no letter from you today but I dare say that's because of the general postal disorganisation over Christmas & not as I dread to hear, because of further complications in your condition. I'd love to ring you up again but it costs 9/- a time & if I'm to put anything away in the bank I suppose I'd better curb my longing to hear your voice & be reassured about your condition.
There's nothing much to report here. The house seems wonderfully quiet now the rowdy young ones have gone. We went across to the Winters last evening. The parents played solo while Ba & I were initiated into the mysteries of poker by Peter & John. It was good fun. The weather is ever so mild today & I am far too hot in my long-sleeved blouses.
I enclose this morning's mail. There were also cards from Grunfeld & Charles Stirling. You'll see that the Peppers are at Wheaton Aston, Staffs. I wonder if that's near enough for them to get across & visit you? I have dropped them a card to let them know you're at Cosford, so they might perhaps turn up – I hope so. Frances is having a grand time down here, as always, & doesn't seem to get around to letter writing much. I gave her a Snakes & Ladders set & she & Grannie had a fierce game last evening which Grannie won. I think Frances has really learnt her lesson about taking her beatings in the proper spirit. She loves the game. I must try to teach her dominoes next.
I'm longing to have your next letter & to know when there's any prospect of our being together again. I'll come up to Cosford like a shot as soon as you say the word. Yours always, darling, Ursula
