Darling Johnnie,
It seems simply ages since you left, although, or perhaps because, nothing much has happened. I spent last evening letter-writing & got off seven – to Mother, Mrs Cousins, Mrs Kent, Lowe, Hazard, Irene Galitzenstein & Aunt Ethel. Quite a load off my mind!
Frances was very pleased with her presents, & hopes to write & thank you soon. This morning I let her have some flour & she proceeded to make “pastry” (with water only) with her new rolling-pin & pastry board. She cooked the resultant mess in the oven, as I had the fire on for the
[page break]
washing, and I’m afraid I may have to eat some for tea!
We’re going out now on SSafa business and to see about the wedding present. I’ll let you know whether or not I find anything suitable.
It was a gorgeous second honeymoon, wasn’t it, Johnny darling? I’m looking forward to a third in a few years’ time! If our love continues to grow as it has between the 1st & 2nd, the 3rd one ought to be in heaven, I should think! However, I hope we shan’t be in heaven [underlined] too [/underlined] soon!
All my love to you, very very dear husband, I’m longing to have you home again.
Yours always,
Ursula.

Darling Johnnie,
Thank you for your letter enclosing one from Tante Bertha. What an invalid! 4 sets of tennis, topped off with croquet & swimming & then a night on the tiles! It’s high time I came to keep an eye on you, I think. But I’m very glad that you had a spot of fun over the weekend. Certainly I’ll be glad to meet the Robertsons on Wednesday week. I seriously doubt if I’ll have time to ring up your people, & relay the news of your meeting Mr Robertson & Mr White could as well come from you in a letter, I’ve just about got my

hands full this end.
Yesterdays meeting between between [sic] Mrs Kinsey & her husband was a most unpleasant affair. She arrived first, with only one child, & sat twiddling her thumbs for 1/2 an hour till the gentleman arrived. He was in a very truculent mood with obviously no intention of trying to make it up with his wife but only to insult her. He’s a rather good looking fellow & could, I should think, make himself attractive, but as hard as nails & very selfish I should say. He told Mrs Kinsey that he had plenty of evidence to divorce here (whereas she has no [underlined] evidence [/underlined] around him, only theories) but wouldn’t of course say what, taunting her with various unnamed [indecipherable word].
[page break]
3.
She called him a good few names too, & the whole thing is resolved now into whether he’ll divorce her & get the custody of the children or whether she’ll get her whack in first & get alimony. It’s a nasty sordid business, & I shouldn’t be surprised if he simply deserts her when he gets out of the army, for he admits he doesn’t want the children. I wish I felt more sure in my own mind of Mrs Kinsey’s fidelity; if she really has transgressed & he’s got the evidence, she’s had it. But of course she hotly denies such a thing. He also declares himself quite innocent of unfaithfulness, but I wouldn’t trust him an inch, tho’ I can well believe

that he’ll have covered up his tracks.
Soon after they’d gone, Mrs Pearce & her sister Mrs Westwood turned up, both of whom are also in dire matrimonial difficulties. My goodness, how lucky I am to have a husband like you! It makes you think.
We had a parcel from Aunt Ethel this morning containing sundry groceries which will be most useful, particularly some delightful looking cheese.
Frances is painfully pencilling you a missive, her own composition, I tell her the spelling only.
I’m longing to see you on Friday, but can’t really believe its true yet!
Always yours
Ursula.

Felmersham,
Tuesday 28th Aug.
Darling Johnnie,
This morning I was well rewarded for my letterless day yesterday by getting no less than three from you. The idea of actually playing tennis with you and going swimming, as well as dancing, makes our coming week together seem extremely alluring, I will certainly bring tennis kit with me, but dread to think what sort of a game I shall give you – though I suppose you are just as out of practice as I am, if not more, so that can be no excuse.
To answer your outstanding queries first. 1) My bike is now very satisfactory, the tyre stays “hard as a brick” for two or three days at a stretch and only needs occasional topping-up. However, if you can get hold of a spare inner tube, I think it would be a good idea to do so.
2) Barbara did catch her train on that memorable Sunday, it was nearly 20 minutes late, so she had loads of time.
I am sending on your Father’s letter to you. He sent it here as he had forgotten your address! You will probably have received the padlock by now, as you don’t need it perhaps I could have it for my bike, which I sometimes would like to lock up when I have to leave it out.
I note what you say about writing to you in the evenings and know quite well what you mean. However, evenings are
[page break]
generally scheduled for practice as well as gardening, ironing, mending, etc, so I doubt whether you would come off much better then!
This afternoon Mrs. Kinsey is coming (I hope) to meet her husband, the erring soldier from Woking, here in the hope that it may be possible to effect a reconciliation between them. I am feeling extremely nervous and hope I don’t show it too much. SSAFA business is rather brisk just now and I want to get as much as poss. cleared up before Friday. I think on the whole I will come back here after seeing Frances off, otherwise I shall be very cluttered up with her luggage and mine. Even if they don’t get on to the 10.30, Barbara will be there, so I could come home in time to get the train you have usually taken from Amersham, which connects with a train at Aylesbury which I take to be the 3.30 from Marylebone which you mentioned over the phone. Mother is very keen for Frances to stay longer after making the long journey, we shall have to talk it over when we meet, it would probably mean my going down to [deleted] gq [/deleted] fetch her in the middle of a week.
I’m in a flat spin as to what clothes to bring with me, I am anxious to dazzle you but would like to limit my luggage to one trunk if possible!
All my love darling,
Yours always
Ursula.
Laski, have you still got him
P.S. In your reading list you didn’t mention/

Monday 27/8/45
Darling Johnnie,
No letter from you again this morning, the postal services are really very remiss, I hope I shall get 2 tomorrow.
Theres [sic] nothing much to report here. Today we have gorgeous weather again, & I am very exercised in my mind as to what clothes to bring with me to L’boro, since I don’t want to cart around a lot of stuff nor yet be frozen or frazzled. It’s very hard! Also my black & white shoes are at the cobblers & I’m having to exercise all my wiles [missing word]
[page break]
him to get them done in time. F. & I are going into G.X. this pm to draw cash from the bank, get emergency cards & so on – Joan More came to tea with her infants yesterday, the affair passed off quite pleasantly & uneventfully.
Must go & get changed now. Lots of love darling & do write soon! By the way, if you can’t book the room for the 2nd Friday night maybe I’d better come home then & get ready for the weekend, shopping etc? Let me know, so I can make arrangements this end.
All my love
Ursula.

Saturday 25th Aug.
Darling Johnnie,
It only took me 10 minutes to get through to you this morning which I thought was remarkably good. It was grand to hear your voice, & to get 2 letters from you this morning. I wonder why Wednesday’s didn’t reach me till today, same as Thursday’s?
Osteoarthritis sounds a very grand name. I’m all in favour of their giving you a pension & sending you home, & then we’ll set to work to cure the knees. I gather from Dr Novokovsky that you might need weekly treatments for some months, but it would

probably clear up in the end. I hope so. Alec More left for Germany today, quite unexpectedly, so Joan is bringing her sprogs to tea tomorrow. She is having the present furniture of her cottage removed on 5th & her own in on 6th Sept, & I have said she & her family may use our house for the change-over, as we shall be away, & it would otherwise be very awkward for the granny & 2 kids sleeping on the floor etc. I’m not sure yet whether she is taking advantage of the offer, but think so. This afternoon I am taking Frances & Philip over to the fair at St Peter’s. It’s pouring

with rain & thoroughly miserable, but the fair ends today & Frances is terribly keen to go again, so as you’re not coming we may as well go. It’ll be more fun for her with Philip there, & Mrs Sharpe is in no shape to take him anywhere just now. Her infant is due in about 10 days (lucky dog!)
I have got you a padlock which I hope to post today. I’m also sending some Statesmen. You may have seen them, if so chuck them out or give them to others. I’m glad you’re in favour of the sheepskin rug, I’ll write for it this evening. I’ll bring the seed [deleted] catague [/deleted] catalogue with

me when I come, & then we can discuss what we’d like & how many.
As regards the hypothetical debts to G.A.T. I don’t see why you need mention the matter at all. Let sleeping dogs lie. After all, if a firm of accountants can’t keep tabs on a simple allowance like that, they deserve to be done down. I’m sure they’d tell you if they’ve overpaid us. Do you propose to tell the Income Tax people too? After all, £200 we had as wedding present, £250 came out of your unused RAF pay. So did £90 out of our balance of £156, & the rest is the hard earned savings of your cheese-pairing wife. Why complain? Remember I earned quite a bit at the factory, with Pat Hodson

& when letting the house last summer (£40 + £30 + £28 to be more or less exact, but don’t for heavens sake tell the Income Tax people that!)
Must go & get ready for our expedition to the fair now.
All my love to you, darling, I hope you’ll find some amusement this weekend (not necessarily with Cpt. Kealey though!)
Yours always,

Rather interesting cuttings from “Times” enclosed for your perusal

Bike is now very satisfactory, hardly needs pumping at all! Still a new inner tube will be needed some day.

Aug 23rd
My darling Johnnie,
Thank you so much for todays letter with one from Eric Magee enclosed. He certainly does sound a nice fellow, hope I may meet him & his wife some day.
I’m sorry I was such an ass as to cry about your knees, & regret still more that I admitted it. However it positively shan’t occur again! I mentioned the trouble to Dr Novokovsky, she says it ought to be curable & wants to come round here with her infra-red lamp

& have a go at it. Is infra-red what they are treating it with now? The Mores had their celebration at the Pond last night, & a very fine supper it was, lobster mayonnaise, steak & chips, fruit salad & cream & coffee – God knows what it cost them, there were 6 of us. I had an exceptionally hectic day of it. I spent the morning turning out our bedroom, p.m. painted the dinging room floor & kitchen surrounds, then when the rain stopped towards 4 pm went out on SSAFA business, visited Mrs Kinsey & then over to Little Chalfont (my bike with F on the back) to see a Mrs Pearce, a most melodramatic case which may turn into

murder before its through (when the husband comes home on leave). She poured out her woes in a steady stream till 6.15 pm, nevertheless by strenuous cycling we got home by 6.35, fed & put Frances to bed, got changed & was down at the Pond by 7 pm! When I got home at nearly 11 pm of course the house was still in the uproar I’d left it in when painting the floor, big sideboard in hall, & everything else in the kitchen. I couldn’t face it, so I went to bed, & put it to rights this morning. Today by way of a change I went on strike & spent part of the morning planting out Siberian wallflowers that Palmer had brought the night

before. After lunch I had to write SSAFA reports, that’s why this letter to you didn’t get done. I’m going to post it tonight & hope it reaches you on Saturday. By 4 pm when I’d finished Frances was browned off, so we jumped on the bike & took a picnic over to St Peter’s Common where there are permanent swings, see-saw etc & also at present a fair. She went on roundabouts & swings & thoroughly enjoyed herself, & is very keen to take you on Saturday if you come, the last day of the fair. She’s a devil for swings & things, nothing seems to shake her.
Another parcel I sent

to you in May 1944 has come home to roost, perfectly intact & in good condition. It contained among other things, 2 vests, 2 pants & a blanket, which will be useful here. Also 3 pairs khaki socks which I don’t think you’ll ever need & propose, with your consent, to give to the Dutch.
The arrangements for Frances’s holiday are at present that she will travel on Friday 31st Aug, by the 10.30 am if poss, in [indecipherable word] by 1.15 pm. I could therefore come up to Loughborough by the afternoon train if I make it snappy, but wondered if you would prefer to come home for the

weekend & I’d travel back with you on Sunday afternoon. It would be slightly cheaper tho’ not much as your fare would be extra. I leave it to you to decide. I’m looking forward so much to being with you again for a while, my darling, it seems simply ages since you were home. I do hope you’ll be able to wangle a 36 this weekend.
All my love, dearest, you’re so precious & I love you terribly.
Yours always
Ursula.

Aug. 22
Darling Johnnie,
It’s pouring with rain here, which is annoying as I had planned to go & see one or two people on SSAFA business, by bike. Since lunch time I have painted the diningroom [sic] floor & the kitchen surround with Daikaline, its not dry yet & the rest of the house is cluttered up with the furniture from there. I do hope it will look good, it is almost bound to be an improvement on the previous patchiness. This evening Joan More is having her postponed party at the Pond, Miss McLeod is keeping an eye on Frances, but tells me she is going on a month’s holiday to Scotland tomorrow, so we shall have to make other arrangements if we want an evening out.
[page break]
2.
I saw an advert in the Times yesterday for sheepskin rugs 42” x 33” for 82/6, 36” x 30” for 70/-. This is just what we want for the bedroom, on the door-side of the bed, then the string one could be mounted on the strip of matting now on the window side & make a more presentable whole. What do you feel about it? I heard from the radiogram advert that it had already been sold. I’m afraid we’ll have to wait some time for one.
I had another session at jam & bottling last night, & have now definitely come to the end of my bottles. Still we’ve got quite a nice little store by us for the winter.
There’s an article in “Housewife” this month by a
[page break]
3.
man who took up the violin when over 30. His wife thumped on the piano, altogether they sound very like us. He said he could play quite well after a year & now plays in a small orchestra! He must have had a remarkable teacher! If it is true that your knees will never get really better, thereby putting many activities out of bounds for us, how doubly fortunate that you took up the violin, so that we have that interest to occupy us. However I’m not admitting the hypothesis about your knees, if the RAF cant cure them there may be others who can.
How long do you expect to have to stay at the [indecipherable word]?
[page break]
Perhaps after a suitable interval you could point out to the kindly Fl/Sgt that you are a W/O & have had enough of penal conditions in Germany, & maybe he’d fix it for you.
I hope to send back Jock Scott’s box in due course (ie. probably tomorrow) thanks for the address.
I do hope you’ll be coming this weekend, not least because it’s the Albert Sammons concert at [indecipherable word] & they’re playing Beethoven & Bach sonatas, among other things. If you [underlined] could [/underlined] give me notice, it would help in arranging for someone to sit in with Frances, now that Miss McLeod will be away.
I love you so much, my dearest, & long for you always.
Ursula.

Thank you so much for 2 letters, one from Gable End, received this morning. I’m so glad you enjoyed the weekend, & think it’s a very good thing you went. I really mustn’t be greedy about you!
I’m afraid I wrote a very dreary letter yesterday, I’m very ashamed of it. I’m feeling much more cheerful today, but in a roaring hurry as I have to be at the [indecipherable word] at 2 pm & its now 1/4 to.
[page break]
Its more or less fixed for F. to go to Devon on Friday 31st, return following Saturday. It won’t be long but I’m sure she’ll enjoy it & it’ll do her good. I’m proposing to pay Ba’s fare, for her trouble.
Did you hear the Radar programme on the wireless last night? I thought it was excellent. F & I went to Gerrards Cross, took your hat & jacket & did various shoppings. The new shirt, size 15 1/2 & 16, has arrived today from W’hampton.
I love you so much dearest, & I do hope you’ll get 36 hours this weekend.
Yours always
Ursula.

My darling Johnnie,
I am more depressed than I can say by your letter of Friday. What a packet of bad news! I do wish you’d come home last weekend since you may not be coming for a fortnight. It’s really most bleak. Frances won’t see you for nearly a month if she goes to Devon on 31st as proposed. However there’s nothing to be done about it now. Do you think they might relent? As for the loss of the key, it isn’t only the padlock which is affected, for the key belongs to my [deleted] suitcase [/deleted] [inserted] trunk [/inserted]. as I told you when you took it, & its no joke if I’ve got to lug that into Gerrards Cross for a new one. So do make every effort to find the key.
[page break]
As for this bombshell about your never recovering the use of your knees, I just can’t believe it. No more climbing of mountains or tennis or squash or even country walks! Its too ghastly, & we won’t sit down under it. Maybe a specialist could do something about it, or a bonesetter or manipulative surgeon. Anyway I’m not going to think about it any more now, I’m too depressed for words & have been crying all morning in the intervals of doing the washing.
Ba says she’ll take Frances to Devon so I think we must jump at the offer since we shant [sic] get down there this year. I’ll pay Ba’s fare by way of recompense.
So come home soon All my love Ursula

Felmersham,
Saturday 18.8.45
Darling Johnnie,
I wonder how you are enjoying yourself this evening, and how the journey went off. I’m sure you’ll enjoy the weekend very much. I have spent a busy afternoon pruning the raspberries, they look immensely chastened now, and there is another huge pile of stuff for the bonfire. This evening I have been practising and working off some SSAFA correspondence, and when I have finished this I’m going to bed.
The long-awaited box of eggs from Jock Scott arrived this morning, all intact and most beautifully packed in sawdust. I have kept the box and packing in case you would like to return it to him (in hopes of more) but the address on his letter, (enclosed herewith) seemed a bit scanty. [inserted] Not acknowledged yet. [/inserted]
Yesterday afternoon I planted out the vegetable seedlings Mr. Palmer brought round; Frances had invited Philip Sharpe to tea, and I was just coming in, all hot and mucky, to get the tea when who should arrive at the door but Jmo (pronounced Jimmo) and her small son William. She is an old school friend of Barbara’s, from our Jersey days, and is the girl now living in Burton’s Lane, Little Chalfont, in the house that Leverett pointed out as we passed it in his car, 2 or 3 weekends ago. She has been living in Devon for most of the war, and I didn’t know she was home again. Her husband is in the Army
[page break]
In Italy but she expects him home soon. His name is Geoffrey Cozens (and she, of course, is Mrs. Cozens!). Their son William is going to 5 next month, and seems a very nice kid. I was so glad to see old Jmo again, she hasn’t a vast amount of brain but plenty of chic and she’s good fun. Her younger sister Miriam is anxiously awaiting news of her husband, interned by the Japs. She has 2 brothers, in the Army.
The photos of Peter’s wedding have come, they are very nice but they set me back 15/- C.O.D.
I made about 8 lbs of plum chutney last night, and some plum jam, which contrary to expectation is really very nice. I have now only got about 6 jam jars left, so I’ll have to call a halt soon. Mrs. Pearcy was as good as her word and sent me up a beautiful plank, over 3 ft long, by her son Brian, which will make a grand shelf. I haven’t had tome to fix it yet, and think I shall probably leave it to you next weekend.
Its nearly 11 p.m. now, so I think I shall trot off to bed. Goodnight, my sweetheart, God bless you.
Yours always
Ursula.
[underlined] P.S. [/underlined] I have got my bike back, old Payne said he has made a new valve in a different place, it remains to be seen if the tyre keeps hard now. Anyway the spokes are fitted. I have got a new battery for the cycle lamp, if you need one.

Felmersham,
Sunday evening, 12.8.45
My darling Johnnie,
Frances and I had an uneventful journey home, Frances was very good as she was entirely engrossed in nursing my fur, and when we got home she put it to bed in the cot with its head on a pillow and the rest carefully covered up with my dressing-gown. I have spent the evening, after clearing up, in working off my SSAFA correspondence and other oddments. It is now 9 p.m., and I am going to bed really early, you will be glad to hear.
The house seems terribly empty and dull without you, Johnnie darling, I do hope VJ day will come soon so that you get another 48 hours leave. Anyway you will be home next Saturday, and I ought to find plenty to keep me busy until then.
I do hope the M.O. will take more account of your knees and their creaking, and perhaps prescribe something for them. The electrical treatment for your feet will do you good, too, and now that you are no longer exposed to the tearing pace of civilian life I hope they won’t be so painful. I feel rather guilty that I let you do so much for me while you were home, I do so hope there will be no ill effects. I must say I enjoyed your help and attention. I wish you were here now, there’s a horrid big fluttery moth in the room!
Must trot off to bed now, there is
[page break]
Really nothing much to report to you, except that I love you as much as ever and wish you would come home for keeps.
Always yours, darling,
Ursula.

July 30th
Darling Johnnie,
Frances & I got home quite safely yesterday, we all got off the train at Amersham & caught the bus without much waiting. I spent the evening dress-making and went to bed reasonably early (i.e 11pm) and slept like a log. Today has been washing, so far, tho' it's not very fine weather. I've attacked that chamois waistcoat of yours, soaked it for hours in hot suds, then scrubbed it with a nail brush, and have left it soaking again. You'll be surprised to know that it is still quite yellow underneath all the black!
[page break]
Otherwise there is nothing much to report of the last 24 hours. I hope you got back without undue fatigue, and enjoyed the company of your travelling companion. I shall be interested to hear what you think of him. I've only met him 2 or 3 times, never for long, & he looks so like a hob goblin that that impression obliterated all others.
Frances fell down on the way home from school & grazed her arm quite badly, so she is solacing [?] herself now with [one indecipherable word], (viz her painting box).
I suppose you won't get this letter till Wednesday, so It'll be no good writing after tomorrow. Hurrah!
Lots of love dearest & a kiss from [one indecipherable word].
Ursula.

Felmersham,
July 26th
Darling Johnnie,
Thank you very much for two letters which arrived this morning. This M.R.U. certainly seems to be a better place and more suited to your needs. It would be grand if the electrical treatment hastens on the cure. I am looking forward eagerly to hearing tomorrow whether you can come home on Friday. I have asked Miss McLeod to sit in the house on Saturday evening and have written for tickets for the concert. If you do come home on Friday and feel up to it on Saturday, we could look in on the Chalfont Fair after all.
I have managed to buy the things you asked for down in the village this morning. I got quite a nice little satchel which may do for Frances's school days when you have finished with it. It cost 9/6.
Great excitement over the election results. Mr. Wallace came hurrying round after the 1 o'c news telling me that the Tories have lost 81 seats up till then. It's really quite thrilling.
You probably won't get this letter before leaving for home, so I will stop and get on with the spring cleaning.
All my love dear.
Ursula

Just in case you couldn't let me know when you're coming you might be able to get a car for yourself.

Darling Johnnie,
Thank you for your letter of Sunday evening, received today. I’m glad the journey wasn’t too bad. It’s probably wiser to go back on the early train again next week. If you need to phone in emergency, next door’s number is C. St G. 294. I should think they’d deliver a message, even if I couldn’t speak to you.
I’m feeling very disgruntled today for [indecipherable word] small reasons. One is that I cycled over to St Peter specially to get some information from the food office for one of my SSAFA clients & found they’d altered their hours & were shut. Also the police informed me that they have no trace of my
[page break]
wrist watch. Father wrote asking me to go to Paddington to see about Ba’s suitcase, & I just can’t manage to find the time, I’ll ring up but I think its a waste of effort trailing in all that way; if its there, they’ll forward it, if not I can’t do any good. Worst of all Peter wrote saying Frances is [underlined] not [/underlined] expected at the wedding, so now I’ve got to make arrangement for parking her & I can’t think where. Ann Reed will be away, Gwen Williams is in hospital, Joan More will have her husband home on leave, Mrs Sharpe has all her family at home on a Saturday & anyway is for some in [indecipherable word], & the school closes the day before! My people will be sorry to miss seeing Frances too. I was thinking of suggesting to them that they spend and extra night here with us (they have the 2 single rooms
[page break]
3.
& Frances can manage in the cot for one night.) I’ll suggest It anyway, I expect you’d be quite willing wouldn’t you? But I don’t know what to do with Frances for the wedding.
The dancing display went off very nicely yesterday. They are doing part of it again on August 6th at a British Legion fair in Gerrards Cross, so we’ll be able to go together & you can see it if you want to. I’ve arranged to have the piano tuned on August 2nd afternoon. The only time he could give me. Do you know what time of day you’ll be coming home? I thought it would probably not be till evening, so It wouldn’t matter.
I’m trying to spring clean the house & must now
[page break]
go & get on with it. I shall be interested to hear how you like your new abode when you’ve got into the routine of it.
Lots of love and a big kiss from Frances.
[underlined] Ursula [/underlined]
[underlined] P.S. [/underlined]
Frances enquired how much I had to pay for her when she was a baby. So I imparted the facts of life to her. She was most interested but not unduly so & has not referred to the matter again.

My Darling Johnnie
Your kit-bag has arrived safely, the fiddle looks to me to be quite O.K. The bridge has come out, but I suppose that doesn’t matter. I have washed all the clothes from the kitbag today & they are certainly several shades lighter. If you’ll bring your chamois waistcoat home next time, I’ll wash that for you too.
This the the great day for Frances’s dancing display. I shall be heartily glad when it’s over these late expeditions spoil both afternoon & evening as working periods for me. I must hurry away now
[page break]
to improve the [two indecipherable words] by doing more shopping in Gerrards Cross before the show. I was sick last night & have got a rotten headache today, so I’m probably sickening for something. You’ll have to come home & nurse me & run the house. That would [one indecipherable word] you! Actually a few aspirins will doubtless settle it.
Hope you are enjoying life more at this new place & that something is being done for your [one indecipherable word].
Longing to see you again on Saturday
Yours always
Ursula.

22/7/45Sunday evening
Johnnie my darling,
When I promised last night to write that letter of enquiry for you, I thought I’d be able to find the address of the Stopes Clinic from advertisement of her books which quite often appear in NSW but of course there are none in the copies I have here now. So I have been looking though Leslie beeadshead [sic] look to see if I could find any address, o [sic] came on a categorical statement in answer to your query. “Physically let us put people’s mind at rest at once by saying that the effect of it (masturbation) are negligible. A person may masturbate daily for twenty years asuffer [sic] no more physical disability than a slight and temporary devitalisation. “
[page break]

He goes on to say that psychologically the results are more serious because it is the result of maladjustment to sex (in your case total frustration after you had got used to a normal sex life) “It is a serious matter to be maladjusted to so important a thing as sex, but no results serious enough to cause alarm ever result from masturbation itself. - - - all sorts of pathological mental conditions have resulted not from the habit, but from the false emotions with which it has been surrounded; emotions it must be added, the intensity of which is out of all proportion to the seriousness of the habit.”
I feel sure this is just the answer you would get from any clinic. However as I promised, I will see if I can find the address of the firm

The phone book, and will ask them. But you really needn’t worry, darling, specially in view of our ecslatre [sic] success this morning, and I feel perfectly sure that when we are living tupeslier [sic] again normally the whole business will fade away. In the meantime keep it up till next weekend. I thought of sending the whole book to you, but thought perhaps you would rather not have it there, but prefer to look this it here next weekend. It is certainly a very save & refreshing book, o we might do worse that refer to it when one childrens lupin [sic] to have problems. Let me know if you consider Leeasherhead’s [sic] verdict sufficient or if you would still like e to write if owhen [sic] I find out

where to write to I may not have much time tomorrow, what with the weekly wash o in the afternoon the dress rehearsal of the dancing display, & the display itself of Tuesday.
I feel so happy & contented this evening after one lovely weekend. The days will soon pan till next Saturday, & then comes the prospect of 10 whole days together, after that six weeks and eventually one whole lives to call our own and live as we please. It almost seems to o good to be true. I’m longing too, to get down to our music seriously; we have so much to do together, 24 hours a day will never be enough for us.
How I must go to bed early as I promised you I would

I can’t pretend that I shan’t miss you, but our weekend was so lovely that the joy of it vile [sic] carry me over easily till next Saturday.
I love you with all my heart, Johnnie dearest, and I’m longing for you to come back to me.
Yours for always

Felmersham,
July 20th
Darling Johnnie,
I sent off a parcel to you this morning containing your laundry & a little light reading matter. I hope the registered envelope with £5 & other oddments has reached you safely. I [underlined] do [/underlined] hope you will be able to get away for weekends, it would be marvellous. Joan tells me that you can get a fast decent train from Loughborough to Aylesbury taking about an hour, she said. There you'd have to change & come to either Amersham or Chalfont & Latimer, from both of which buses (353 & 335) bring you to the Pheasant, from where I explained the route home. It would be better if
[page break]

you could get a car the first time anyway. The taxi hire here, apart from Leverell, is a man called Holmes, I don't know his number but you'd find it in the book (that's what I left a blank for in my last letter, & then forgot to fill it in!)
I'm longing to hear from you and to know how you're being treated now, & whether its a better place. I hope there may be a letter tomorrow. I somehow feel its unlikely that you'll get away this weekend, tho' it would be simply wonderful if you could.
Da has just sent on the parcel of stuff from Ly. Frances is thrilled to bits with her 2 new dolls (with several spare dresses & a suitcase to match), very smart 3 piece suite in green & red, about 4" high

a dog, a kangeroo, a baby in cot, 2 little china dogs, a paint-box & book & other oddments. Some of the clothes will be useful too, tho' many of them need repairs. I haven't had time to go thro' them in detail yet.
I had a pleasant surprise this morning - a letter from Dudley [indecipherable word]. I haven't heard from him for 2-3 years & wondered if he was still extant. He is, and in India. Malcolm is in Germany, handling high finance, & his people in Hendon quite OK. I'll send you the letter when I've replied to it. I'm so sorry to hear that Mr Boyd is dead, I wonder how Mrs Boyd will manage with those 3 bouncing boys of hers. Thank you for letters of 17 & 15 & for sending on Pat's.

Barbara hasn't got her suitcase yet, & was sorry to find when she got back that Dixie has been posted, she didn't know whether to. He's been a regular daily visitor to the canteen kitchen, so they'll miss each other.
All my love to you, my darling, it would be simply glorious if you [deleted] get [/deleted] could get away on weekend leaves. If not, let me know what prospect there is of our coming up to you.
Yours always,

Darling Johnnie,
I hope to draw £5 & send it off to you by the early post tomorrow in the hope that you may get it on Friday afternoon. I also intend to send you one local timetable, in which the relevant buses are 305, 335 and 353. Of these the [underlined] 305 [/underlined] comes right into the village, & it is best for you to look to the White Hart. (5d from Gerrards Cross) which is a pub at the top of the hill on the far side of the village. Getting out there, you should go back a little way to the White Hart itself & turn down to the left, Back Lane (theres a “gentlemen’s” on the corner!!) Follow this lane till the crossroads, which is
[page break]
Bottrells Lane, turn left, and your property is the 2nd house on the left.
The [underlined] 335 [/underlined] or [underlined] 353 [/underlined] both take you only to the [underlined] Pheasant.[/underlined] From there, turn left down into the village, first right at the Crown, up the hill past the Fox and Hounds (I’m not suggesting that you call in at all these). Fork left at the top where Bottrells Lane is signposted, carry on till you come to the aforementioned crossroads, & your property is still the 2nd on the left.
I feel this walk would be rather much for you, it takes 1/4 hour at least, & if you must come by bus it would be better to try to get a 305.
Better still, if you had time in London, would be to ring up for a car to meet you, either Mr Leverett

telephone Chalfont St Giles 1 (but not [underlined] this [/underlined] weekend as he is away on holiday) or else
If you are having a car, it would be nearer ([indecipherable word] cheaper) for you to come by train to Seer Green, instead of Gerrards Cross, but don’t go to Seer Green unless you are being met, as there’s only one bus an hour there (viz the 305 going the opposite way). If your train happened to connect, well and good.
Your telegram handed in 11.30 didn’t reach me till between 6-7 pm, so this gives you an idea of the length of notice required if you want to contact me.
I shouldn’t think it really likely that you’ll get home this weekend is it?
[page break]
[deleted] 4 [/deleted] [inserted] 3 [/inserted]
If there were a chance the weekend after, I could arrange to meet you in London and have taxis this end & do the thing in style.
But its certainly a gorgeous thought that you might come on leave at all. I’m afraid the journey might be rather grim, you simply [underlined] must [/underlined] have a seat, so tell people you’re a hospital case and must have one.
Can’t think of anything more now. It’s 11.30 pm so I must get to bed. I sent my letter today to Cosford. I do hope they forward it to you. did you have the kitbag finally sent off?
All my love darling
Ursula.

My darling Johnnie,
Your parcel of washing arrived this morning. Many thanks for the various items enclosed for me, much appreciated. The notepaper & envelopes will be most useful. Unfortunately the glass thing with handle, whatever it was, was broken, but the jamjar was intact. I see you couldn’t master those sweeties stuck in the bottom of the jar any better than I! I’ve settled them now by melting them out with hot water & making therewith a brew called

‘Dollies’ Wine’ which I have coloured red & handed over to Frances to use for entertaining her two small friends who are coming to tea this afternoon.
I enclose a letter from Frances which came thro’ the post this morning from the school. I gather she traced it, but its really quite good. Yesterday we went to a dress rehearsal of the dancing display, Frances looks rather nice as a Shetland pony, with real tail. I’m still hoping you may come to see it.

3.
I’m hoping to phone you in about 10 minutes, if I can get thro’, to learn the latest gen about going to Loughboro!
All my love darling. I hope you’ll be able to cope with the form for extra coupons, we could use some!
A big kiss from Frances, and an even bigger one from me
Yours always
Ursula.

Darling Johnnie,
I've had 4 letters from you in 2 days, which I consider quite lavish. I'm sorry we couldn't phone again on Sunday evening but we were both cleaned out of suitable small change. Next time I'll have a personal call, but I felt sure you'd be having lunch just then. If you go to Loughboro' let me know the phone number, would you.
We had quite a good day's shopping yesterday. We each got wedding presents, ours the heavy crystal vase, something like the Swedish one of our own, and a very lovely thing, and

Barbara's a set of six soup bowls with plates & lids, very jolly things. Prices are simply fantastic, anything silver is out of the question & even second-hand EPNS was 10 guineas for a cake-stand!
Poor Ba is in great distress over her lost suitcase. There was no trace of it at Paddington yesterday, I do hope it turns up, I just cant bear to think of her losing all that irreplaceable stuff.
Last night I cut out my summer costume which I hope to wear for the wedding. I hope to goodness it turns out alright. This morning I've done a large wash, & must now hurry off to Gerrards Cross

with Frances to the dress rehearsal of the dancing display.
I've paid the War Damage Contribution, & enclose a few letters which came for you today. The washing hasn't arrived yet, but of course I'll be [underlined] thrilled [/underlined] to do your washing for you again.
I hope they do something about your flat feet, they used to worry me but Pack always said they'd be OK in time.
Lots of love from us both, my darling one. I do long for you so
Ursula.

Darling Johnnie,
I was so disappointed not to be able to speak to you when I telephoned at 12.30 today. I thought you would surely be in the ward then, having dinner. Barbara was here to have a word with you too, & was sorry not to hear you. Poor girl, she has been having rotten earache while on holiday, it is somewhat better now, but I put drops in for her when it gets bad. She’s also in dire distress because she lost her suitcase on her way up from Devon, with all sorts of valuables including the new hat for the wedding, 4 pairs

of silk stockings, her fur & her camera, in it. I hope it will turn up by tomorrow, otherwise it will be a major tragedy. She said the travelling was awfully crowded, so I suppose that’s how it got mislaid.
The weather is gorgeous here today & we are going for a picnic this afternoon. There was a terrific thunderstorm last night. I wonder if you had it too.
Frances thoroughly enjoyed herself as a fairy at the Garden Fete, & won third prize (2/6 saving stamp) Ba arrived as it was finishing & we stayed up chatting until nearly 12 pm, & couldn’t get to sleep even then for

the really notable thunder & lightning. I kept feeling that we ought to draw the blackout, as tho’ it were an air-raid!
I gathered from the sister that I spoke to on the phone (not [indecipherable name] was it? It didn’t sound like her) that there is a hope that you wouldn’t go to Loughborough after all. I’m sure that would bring you leave much nearer. I hope you & s/o Riley were having a good time in the gym while I was trying to ring you up!!
All my love to you darling, & a big kiss from Frances
Yours for always
Ursula.

Darling Johnnie,
Thank you for your letter of 12th enclosing one from Allan. I may drop him a line if I get around to it but it doesn’t seem very likely. Anyway give him my kind regards & all that if you see him, I’m sorry to have missed him & hope we may meet again some day. This afternoon is the garden fete in the Rectory grounds, in which Frances hopes to figure in the fancy dress parade as a fairy. She really looks quite sweet in her outfit. Clashing with this is Barbara’s arrival for the weekend, so

I phoned her last night (it took me 1/2 hr to get “8 minutes”) & told her to come to the fete, & have been busy getting supper ready beforehand. I’ll have to take the pram down to the fete with me to carry back Ba’s suitcase.
Yesterday we went in to Amersham couldn’t buy most of the things I wanted & got a lot of others instead, including a length of green woollen material reduced from 6 coupons to 2 as it is slightly soiled. I’m going to wash it & hope the marks come out. It’ll make F a dress & me a blouse. I also bought a dozen preserving jars, as

we only have a few & I want to get a decent stock of fruit put by for the winter.
I’m looking forward very much to seeing Ba again. She’s staying till Monday, catching the 4.15 from King’s X, so we may possibly go up to town with her for the day, unless she has other plans.
Excuse writing getting worse & worse in my hurry. I’m surprised you say Turbett was noisy. I thought him rather a sober young fellow. Lucky chap to be on leave. Glad the cleaning arrived OK. There seem to be no more to be had, worse luck. Will send socks soon. All my love darling, Ursula.

July 12
My darling,
Thank you so much for your letter of 10th. I hope by now the cherries will have arrived, and that some at least of them were edible. The season is nearly over, there are not many more to be had here. Certainly we must avoid starting a “chocolate shuttle service”. We have got plenty here, so I suggest you keep & eat what you have, & I wont send you any more until you tell me you are short of it. A letter came from the Income Tax people today which I opened, read, re-sealed & sent off to you. I gather[?] we’ll have to pay up the [one indecipherable word] Damage contribution & smile.
Frances has let me know in no

uncertain terms that she does not like staying with Auntie Bunty, tho’ for no specific reasons. However she’s very busy & happy now, & her cold has practically gone. Yesterday we went over to see Mrs[?] Mawer[?] in Gerrards Cross, about the clothes for the dancing display, & found we were expected to stay to tea. The room was festooned with dresses & properties of various sorts, & Frances greatly admired the dragonflies wings. So Mrs Mawer very kindly produced a pair of silver[?] wings her small daughter had warn for a previous show, & then a wee blue ballet frock and a wand & a golden head-dress, & said Frances could have them all, and Frances

Nearly burst with joy because there’s to be a fancy-dress competition at the fete on Saturday & she was very keen to go & I had nothing to dress her up in – of course she togged herself up there & then as a fairy, and skipped happily round the garden for the rest of the afternoon. Mrs Mawer & I got our money’s worth of fun out of it too, for Frances was wearing a pair of rather thick knickers which hung down a good 3 inches below her diaphanous frock, and her headdress kept slipping to the most comical angles, but she was all unconscious and practically airborne with delight. You’ll certainly have to see the whole set-up when you come, if

it survives that long. I have now got to make her a leaf-dress for the display, & to this end have dyed green a discarded nightdress of mine & hope to stitch it this afternoon while out to tea with Joan[?] [one indecipherable word]. It appears Frances can only understudy for the role of Shetland pony in the display as they have the requisite 8 at the moment – I do hope someone falls out, so that she can be in it. Otherwise of course, she’ll be able to watch it, which will be quite fund. [underlined] Do [/underlined] try & come on leave by the 24th, Johnnie. Tell the Wing-Co your daughter is going to be a Shetland pony!

away to try to make it work. I hope he succeeds. I certainly miss it for the news, tho’ I’m not in much in the evenings to listen, I’m gardening as long as it’s light. It’s beginning to look more respectable but there’s still plenty to be done. Mr Hatchett enquired tenderly after you, and asked if he might be allowed to present us with a duck when you come home! I hope he does.
I’m so glad the drops are doing your eyes good, I hope the M/O will cure the spots on your chest too - & DON’T FORGET THE DENTIST!!!
Lots of love from us both. I long for you all the time darling.
Yours always, Ursula.
