Little Close, Dec 27th
My darling Johnnie, there was no letter from you today but I dare say that's because of the general postal disorganisation over Christmas & not as I dread to hear, because of further complications in your condition. I'd love to ring you up again but it costs 9/- a time & if I'm to put anything away in the bank I suppose I'd better curb my longing to hear your voice & be reassured about your condition.
There's nothing much to report here. The house seems wonderfully quiet now the rowdy young ones have gone. We went across to the Winters last evening. The parents played solo while Ba & I were initiated into the mysteries of poker by Peter & John. It was good fun. The weather is ever so mild today & I am far too hot in my long-sleeved blouses.
I enclose this morning's mail. There were also cards from Grunfeld & Charles Stirling. You'll see that the Peppers are at Wheaton Aston, Staffs. I wonder if that's near enough for them to get across & visit you? I have dropped them a card to let them know you're at Cosford, so they might perhaps turn up – I hope so. Frances is having a grand time down here, as always, & doesn't seem to get around to letter writing much. I gave her a Snakes & Ladders set & she & Grannie had a fierce game last evening which Grannie won. I think Frances has really learnt her lesson about taking her beatings in the proper spirit. She loves the game. I must try to teach her dominoes next.
I'm longing to have your next letter & to know when there's any prospect of our being together again. I'll come up to Cosford like a shot as soon as you say the word. Yours always, darling, Ursula

Little Close, Boxing Day
My darling Johnnie, I didn't write to you yesterday because there was no post going out & also what with one thing & another, there wasn't much opportunity for quiet letter-writing! It was grand to hear your voice & to know that the danger from your throat infection is past. I must say your letter telling me about it shook me more than somewhat in spite of your assurances 'that all was OK' so I was particularly relieved to be able to speak to you yesterday. I'm longing to hear from you again & to know how you're getting on now.
Well, our Christmas Day here went off with a bang. Stockings before breakfast (got a bottle of salad cream among other things, so was very pleased), afterwards the Winters took us out in their motor boat for a lovely sail up Kingsbridge estuary & down again to the open sea, it was glorious sunny morning & we thoroughly enjoyed it. Then came the turkey, a really enormous bird & simply delicious followed by plum pudding. Afterwards we opened our presents, great excitement for Frances who as usual made a terrific haul. You & I had some nice things too. Ba gave us a record token for £1.9/- which will buy 3 records, & she included a list of some of the things in stock last week at HMV, several Mozarts & other desirable things. Peter & Winifred also gave us a record; Carmen suite conducted by Beecham. They were only able to get one record now & will give us the second when its in stock. Mother gave me various things including some fine stockings & a piece of white silk to make a blouse – I can really hardly remember everything. There was such a riot going on & I was trying to cope with Frances's collection as well as mine! Daddy's present was a most interesting book called “Impressions of English Literature” which I think you will enjoy as much as I.
Today Peter & Winifred & Drag have left, so we have been sitting round the fire playing bridge while it pours with rain outside. This evening the Winters are giving a party, so the frolics go on. I must say I'm only running on one cylinder, so to speak, with you not here, & my inside vaguely unquiet most of the time. Nothing has happened to blast my hopes for next August, so it looks as tho' we'll have to pay a visit to the doctor when we get back.
As to your Mother's letter, I shouldn't really bother about it much. I'm not in favour of announcing the pregnancy because it wasn't a main factor, in my mind, in deciding to come here. It seemed to me that Xmas was spoilt for you & me anyway but we could still save it for Frances by my bringing her here, whereas either in digs at Albrington or palmed off on to Bunty, it would have been ruined for her. If you must reopen the matter with your Mother, couldn't you just say that it was you who decided it should be this way, as indeed it was. But I hardly think it’s worth bothering about. I shall probably come into favour again some day, equally undeservedly, & honestly I don't care much, as long as you don't think I've neglected you. You probably know how much rather I would have been with you, in hospital or anywhere else if family ties had not counted. But I feel that Christmas time the children really come first, don't you agree? Frances has certainly enjoyed herself, that's one good thing. So let me know when there's any prospect of you're being let out. If you're going to be up & about but kept in hospital for any length of time, a week or more, perhaps we could come up & stay near you then. I wonder what the prospect of getting digs is like, I suppose the neighbourhood is flooded with Jap chap's relations now. Perhaps you could make enquiries if you're in favour.
As regards my people's income tax affairs, Mother wants me to say that they have had various expenses for painting the house, something over £30 altogether for sundry repairs & she wondered if they get I/T relief on that. If you'll need the actual receipts, let me know & I’ll bring them back with me. Must hurry to catch the post now. I'm enclosing £2 for your pocket money & sundry correspondence. All my love darling. Yours always Ursula

Little Close, Sunday 23/12/45
My darling Johnnie, this morning we have all been for a lovely long walk on Bolt Head. It was very different from our last visit there, you & I, when it was so warm & sunny at the Coastguard's Hut, do you remember? Today there were occasional rain squalls & a great gale blowing the whole time, but it was wonderful up there, & I did so wish you could have been there too. Frances simply loved it & I don't think she's ever been in such a high wind before. It nearly carried her away several times. We went by car as far as the Hook's House, so that saved a long tramp. There has been a lot of flooding at North Sands, nearly a hundred yards up the valley is under water, all due to the SW gales which have been blowing. After our walk we had a colossal lunch of roast beef, yorkshire pudding, potatoes, sprouts, & parsnips, followed by mince pie, from which we are still recovering. We were due to go to a party at the Winter's this evening but Mrs Winter is unwell so that is put off. They are coming to us tomorrow evening anyway. I enclose some of this morning's post. So far there have been no Christmas cards that we haven't also sent to.
I'm glad the weather isn't too 'Christmassy' so that we need not fear for damage to water pipes at home. I did not have a letter from you today but the post is very unreliable just now of course. I do hope all continues to go well & that you succeed in amusing yourself satisfactorily. I wonder if my parcel to you has arrived. I posted it last Wednesday. Of course you won't have opened it! Must stop or I shall miss the post. Everyone sends you lots of good wishes & Winifred is actually writing to you. This letter might arrive on Christmas Day, if so it brings you a special lot of love from Frances & me. It will be lovely when we are together again. I do hope you are not in pain now, & able to get about a bit. Yours always, my darling, Ursula.

Salcombe 229
My darling Johnnie, thank you for your letter of 20th enclosing one from George T. He certainly has a pretty wit! I'm glad you at least manage to sleep fairly well, that is a great thing.
I enclose a couple of snaps which were taken at Wyton last spring. It's not bad of Ly except that she appears to bulge in quite the wrong place! The old lady is Mrs Southerland under whom Ba worked. Ba & Donald Young (Drag, as he's called) arrived quite safely in time for tea after driving down from Farnborough in Drag's open yellow Bentley. Today we went down to the village for odd shopping but this afternoon it's pouring with rain & blowing a gale so it looks as tho' we'll have to stay in. Peter & Winifred will be having a damp trip down, I'm afraid.
Ba told me she had mentioned your violin lessons to Marjorie Gunn who was very interested & said she would certainly like to hear you. She suggested that she should give you a few lessons, so the she can judge your possibilities & then pass you on to Cocky (Mary Darly) who is a pupil & now co-teacher of hers at Down (the big girl's school near Newbury where Marge teaches). She's an awfully nice girl, was at the ambulance station with Ba for some time & apparently an excellent teacher. Marge's system at Down is always to take a pupil for a little while at first herself, then pass her on to Cocky for the middle years of its training & then finish it off herself for the last term or two if specially talented. Cocky uses exactly the same methods as Marge & plays very like her too. Anyway, it's an idea, & when you are free to do so you might write to Marge & get the preliminary lessons with Marge (for which I gather there would be no charge) arranged. Ba said she is really very keen to hear & teach you. She asked Ba how you played & Ba said she hadn't heard much, you thumped so, whereupon Marge said “Does he really thump?” (with your foot don't you know). If he's a natural born thumper, then he's got the makings of a violinist & I must hear him!” she said she's spent many hundreds of hours trying to make her pupils beat in time with their feet & that it's a great asset. So I won't laugh at you for it any more!
So far I have managed to keep my sickness within & apart from a few rumbles on rising there has been no outbreak. I wonder whether a cup of hot tea brought to me in bed has anything to do with it! The Christmas tree is looking quite festive already with all the smaller presents on it. Mother has got a colossal turkey too, it weights over 13 lbs when undressed so it must have been some beast in its feathers. I shall have to brave the elements to post this, there's a terrific storm blowing. By the way, I hope you'll let me know which will be the most convenient hour to ring up. I hope to be able to get through on Christmas day. I'll try anyhow. Goodbye my darling, I hope life's not too miserable & that you have interesting books to beguile the time. Always yours, Ursula.

Little Close, Friday 21st Dec.
My darling Johnnie, It was grand to find your first letter awaiting me here & to have another one this morning. I'm glad you were well enough to write, though I can well imagine that your face must have been feeling horribly sore. Poor darling, I do hope the swelling has gone down a bit now, & that you are able to eat a bit more. You must get organised by Christmas , anyway, for they are sure to give you a pukkah dinner (you see the Hindustani is coming out in me already!)
We had a very pleasant journey down. We adopted your tactics of staying on the platform we arrived at in Paddington, so avoiding the queue & securing nice corner seats! The only snag was we missed the bus at Salcombe, so had to have a taxi, after all. Yesterday evening we were introduced to the Winter family who seem a very nice crowd. They are all coming to a party here on Monday & we all go to them on Sunday. Drag (Peter's best man) is coming after all & bringing Ba down by car arriving this evening. Peter & Winifred tomorrow evening, also by car.
My people seem well, tho' Mother looks rather tired which is hardly to be wondered at. She suggested at once that I should go up after Xmas & fetch you down here for your sick leave, or part of it, but I told her you'd rather be at home & explained how many odd jobs you have to get on with. They are all very sorry that you are not to be here for Christmas – me most of all, needless to say. Mother has sold the double bed & got 2 singles & an interior sprung mattress for her own with the cash - & put £22 or 3 in the post office, so it was a good exchange otherwise there are not many changes here. Ba & I will be sharing the double room, & Peter & Winifred sleep at the Garrards.
Must stop now or I shall miss the post. All my love to you, my dearest, I miss you terribly, but we shall soon be together again. I do hope the pain is not too bad now. I do hate to think of you suffering. Yours always, Ursula.

Felmersham, 19th Dec Evening
Darling Johnnie, I'm writing this in the evening. The packing is done except for last minute items. I decided not to take the doll I have made for Frances, it is terribly bulky, & I have explained to her that her present is waiting for her here for our celebration when you return. She was all in favour of that. So everything has gone into the suitcase, by dint of ruthless pruning of our wardrobes. It's only for 10 days after all, we'll just have to manage. I can't cope with 2 cases.
A card came today from Dudley Moss, now back in this country & hoping to be “Esq” soon. I have written saying I hope he'll come out & see us in the New Year. That's OK by you, I hope, is it? I believe you like him as much as I do.
I'm feeling as sick as a dog, perhaps the train journey will shake it out of me, literally! I'm not taking any work with me & hope to have a real rest, I think it will do me good. They're doing “Prince Igor” on the radio, I wonder if you have it on too. I'm enjoying it. However I'm going to bed after the news, for we must make an early start tomorrow - & you know how good I am at that! I have been playing Ludo with Frances each evening & believe she has now grasped the rudiments of the idea of sportsmanship. No more trouble now when her men get sent back, & no fictitious sixes either!
All our love, dearest, Ursula

Felmersham Wednesday 19th December
Darling Johnnie, It was nice to be reassured by the sister on your ward yesterday that all was going well with you. I hope she gave you my message. She said you might be up in 5 or 6 days, but not allowed home for at least 2 weeks. However that won't be so very long to judge by the way the 6 weeks of your leave flew past.
I am going up to pack when I've written this, & hope to get everything into the suitcase. Leverett is coming for us at 8.30 tomorrow. I really felt I couldn't lug that heavy case alone. I drew £3 out of the Post Office this morning, but had to spend some on postage, so that I had only £2.17 left, & allowing 8/- for Leverett, that was cutting the fare a bit fine, I had an idea it was £2.14 for the two of us! I was a bit worried about it, however I asked Leverett if he would cash my RAF book today instead of tomorrow, & to my surprise he agreed to at once. So now I am alright, saved again!
There was not much post today. Cards from Grandma & Ann & a calendar from David Blaikley. Yesterday there was a book for F from Mrs Lowe & a brass ashtray for us from Ann, which goes well with the candlesticks. Both acknowledged.
All my love, darling, get well quickly so we can be together again. Yours always Ursula

Felmersham 18th Dec
My darling Johnnie, As no telegram has come, I presume things have gone off alright, but anyway I'm going to try to ring up this afternoon & find out from sister, tho' I doubtless shan't be able to speak to you.
I had my last music lesson for some time today, Mme Fastre is to be away for 2 weeks after Xmas, so the next lesson will be about 3rd week in January. However she has given me plenty of work to do in the meantime, so I needn't be idle. It'll be nice to play on the decent piano at Salcombe
The crazy-paving man has written to say he hopes to deliver the stuff tomorrow or Thursday so I'm going to drop him a line telling him to keep it till after Xmas. If we had rain & then hard frost, the whole lot might be reduced to powder otherwise. I enclose letters from Bunty & Freeman. I have written thanking Bunty & declining her offer to have Frances.
2.10 pm. Your telegram has come it reads “operation over Hugh is fine John” I'm not sure what it means but take it that the operation was successful. Thanks so much for arranging for the wire to be sent anyway. All my love darling, Get well soon, Ursula

Felmersham Monday 17th Dec
Darling Johnnie, I do wish that telegrams would come, so that I know you are over the worst. It's such a horrid day altogether. I'm feeling considerably depressed. I do hope that you are not in too bad pain, tho' I suppose its bound to be no picnic. Poor darling, I do love you so.
I'm enclosing this morning's mail, apart from calendars from Mrs Lowe & Eileen Gibbs, & cards from the Hodsons & Ann Warren-Davis. Also there was a letter from Suttons acknowledging in the most grovelling terms my most esteemed order & enclosing a note announcing brusquely that all roses & most other things are sold out! So I shall have to look thro' the catalogue again & see what's to be had. I hope to get the Christmas cards off this afternoon. The boy from Stones brought 100 logs this morning (8/-) which I had put at the back of the garage. My yesterday's painting is nearly dry. There's one bit off the bathroom window where I had to shut it last night when I had my bath, but its not bad. The kitchen is festooned with wet washing this afternoon – what a life!
Longing to hear from you dearest, Yours always, Ursula

Felmersham Sunday 15 Dec
My darling Johnnie, I suppose by the time you receive this the operation will be over & you will be feeling rather like the dog's dinner. I do hope it won't have been too unpleasant, & that the Sister & other patients in your ward are decent, & look after you well. How I wish I could be there to comfort you myself! You can be sure I shall be thinking of you all the time. I have felt very lonely & depressed since you went & I'm sure you have too. It's really wretched that this extra separation should have come just at Christmas time, but we just have to put up with it.
I did nothing much after you left & went to bed fairly early. This morning I have made the marmalade – 7 lbs of it & rather good, I think, & painted the bathroom & kitchen towel rails. I'm writing this after lunch & hope to do the chair this afternoon. I was half afraid Freeman would turn up this morning after all, but luckily he didn't. I have cut the 3rd finger of my left hand on the carving knife & its bleeding profusely tho' not at all painful. The bandage makes it very clumsy. I'm trying to help Frances with her spelling of her letter to you at the same time as I write this, so its likely to be a bit garbled. Anyway, I love you with all my heart, darling & I'm just longing to have you home again for good. Yours always, Ursula

Felmersham Thursday 13th Dec.
Darling Johnnie, This morning I received your letter of Tuesday, so I am still no wiser as to why you are in hospital & how long for. I'm rather uncertain as to where to write to you, but as you are unlikely to be bedridden I suppose you'll be over at the MRU so I'm writing there. Yesterday's letter to you was addressed to the hospital, so if you didn't receive it, you might make enquiries there. Not that is was very important.
As you'll see from Freeman's letter enclosed, he will be coming alone on Sunday. If there's any doubt about your coming home for the weekend, I'll put him off, but suppose I shan't know till tomorrow & am not clear whether to write to Kent or to Highgate. I had a wire from Peter yesterday telling me to collect a heavy parcel from Little Chalfont station – I gather he's got lead-covered wire for outside, which accounts for the weight. Frances & I are going over this afternoon to fetch it – damn the thing. If he'd only sent it to Amersham or Gerrards X it could have been delivered by van, but we are outside the delivery area for Little Chalfont!
If you want any more cash, let me know & I'll send some, but I'm very much hoping you'll be home at the weekend. I've found a present for Ba, a utility bag such as she wanted for 12/10d, much the cheapest I've seen & really quite serviceable, so I've bought it for her. I've made & decorated the lavender bags & hope to get all the stuff packed up & labelled this evening. I wonder if you'll really be home tomorrow evening now that you're a hospital case again. I do hope they're going to give you Xmas leave so that we can go down to Devon as planned. However I suppose I shall know all the answers tomorrow. How I wish we had a phone! I don't know where or when to ring you.
All my love Ursula

Darling Johnnie, I have just had your wire saying “Readmitted Hospital” & am eagerly awaiting more detailed news of what this means. If they can really do something more for you, of course I am very glad indeed, good luck to them, I do hope it won't interfere with our Christmas plans tho' it may curtail the trip. It sounds as tho' your demobilisation will be further postponed anyway. I can't wait to hear all about it. I have just written a Christmas letter to Leslie, as it said on the radio that today was the latest day for posting. I suppose you will tell me if I must put off the Freemans on Sunday. I should think its likely. I wonder if they are putting you back to bed, or just giving you treatment for your knees. I can imagine the hospital may not be as comfortable as it was in summer. Give my regards to the nurses I met there, & Pack if he's still there.
I hope to get your letter tomorrow. Once came from your father yesterday enclosing a cheque for £15 made out to you. Shall we be able to cash it or ought we to ask him to make it out to me? Also a letter from Peter with gen. about the electrical stuff he's sending, which I'll keep for you. Shall I acknowledge ASV or will you? All my love, dear, Ursula.

Darling Johnnie, Frances & I caught a bus immediately after leaving you, in fact we had to run for it, so I didn't bother about the book token. We got home in good time, & have had a busy evening. Frances wrote a letter before bed & suggested off her own bat that she should write to you tomorrow. Since her retiral I have done half the washing, all the mending & written a couple of letters, & hope to retire soon. The kitchen is so warm it should dry the washing better than these damp cold days outside.
It seems awfully lonely here without you, darling, & I haven't had my 9 pm tea yet, altho' its now 10.45, since there's no one to get it!! I'll have to do it myself, I can see. However, I'm hoping it won't be long till you're home again, for good I hope. I'm afraid you may have been delayed by fog this evening, it said on the wireless that it was bad in the Midlands, I hope you arrived in time to get a bunk, anyway. All my love to you, my dearest husband, come safely home to me soon, yours always, Ursula

Darling Johnnie, It is now 11.5pm, so I'm afraid this may not be a very long letter. Anyway there's nothing spectacular to report. I tried out the larder this morning & found that some of my plums preserved in Campden solution had made themselves elaborate flannel nightcaps. So I had to redo the jars. I think I've caught them in time, but we must use them soon.
P.M. I went to Little Chalfont on SSAFA business & this evening I practised for an hour & since have been mending & knitting. I'm looking forward to getting a letter from you tomorrow, nothing much else seems to come by post. Its simply pouring with rain now, beating against the back of the house – I do wish Hatchett had done that waterproofing job. I must try again to get hold of him. Must go to bed now, simply dog-tired. All my love darling, till Friday Ursula
PS Old Wallace wants me – us – to go to a Liberal meeting in the Village Hall at 8 pm on Friday, will you be home? I think not

Oct. 22nd Felmersham
Darling Johnnie I rang up Sidney Scroggie this morning, he is still at Aylesbury but will be going home on leave on Thursday. I said we'd hoped he'd come for the weekend & he thanked us & we parted with mutual expressions of good will. So I've written to invite Barbara instead & I must admit I'm not sorry Scroggie isn't coming, it would have been a terrific palaver fetching him & taking him back with taxis here & there, & I didn't know if he'd have enjoyed himself much in a strange house. So its all turned out for the best. It remains to be seen whether Ba can come.
I haven't done anything very notable today, just the cleaning, washing & ironing. There was no mail. I've washed my hair & Frances's. I tried to get a rear lamp for my bike but they'd sold out. However there should be more this week. I find that back brake awfully stiff to operate & I do notice it dragging a bit when its not supposed to be on, so perhaps we could adjust it again a bit next weekend.
How about digging up the whole of the front lawn & having a sunk garden with rockery? And suppose we got some bricks from the kiln up the road to make the wall on the other side of 'the drive'? How about it?? I do hope you've managed to get back to the Hospital & that your bike is safe & sound.
Lots of love from us both, Ursula

Little Close Dec 28th
My darling Johnnie, I had three letters from you this morning, as well as speaking to you over the phone, so I feel I've done well. The letters were 24, 25 & 26 December & I gather your Christmas wasn't just a riot of festivities. I hope we shall never be parted for Christmas again – or any other time, for that matter. Our enormous turkey came from a farmer's widow, with whom Mother has always dealt down here – it was ordered shortly after last Christmas!
As regards the music lessons, both Mary Darly & Miss Gunn only go up to Downe (or vice versa) 2 or 3 days a week, & are in London the rest of the time, so that's alright. The lessons would take place in London, in the evenings doubtless. I'm more sorry than I can say to hear that your determination to continue has been shaken. I do hope it wasn't my fault. I think it would be a very great pity indeed if you didn't carry on, I feel we haven't so very much further to go to get through the sticky patch & then we'll really get lots of fun out of it. So you simply mustn't give in & you mustn't let me stop either (tho' I may have to in August) because it will be worth it in the end, I feel sure. We shall never be brilliant, maybe, but in time we may give pleasure, perhaps even to others as well as ourselves.
Mother & Ba have gone with Mrs Winter to Newton Abbot today to visit the tailor so Frances & I are going for a walk over to Sunny Cove this afternoon. It was very noble of you to decide this morning that I shouldn't come to stay near you, for I know you would have liked it, but were doubtless considering me. Of course if you are really to be home sometime next week then that is the best solution to the problem. Other things being equal, we shall probably travel up with Ba on Tuesday, that will give us a day or two to prepare for your arrival. I do hope you'll be home by the 6th at the latest, I should be sick if we miss that anniversary too.
All my love to you darling, Yours always, Ursula

Darling Johnnie, the only news is another disappointment – Algy is postponed again. I discovered this yesterday evening & went to bed in a huff (ie my long brown woolly stockings!) at 9 pm. I was wondering whether, in the course of conversation with your M.O., you could ask him if fertility tends to be reduced among POWs & if so, if there is any treatment, vitamin pills & so on, to help. If there were, you might as well try them.
What a shocking railway accident yesterday! I have been wondering if it affected your train back last night, I hope not, you arrive late enough as it is. I hope Leslie wasn't travelling then. I've got the washing done & intend to do some gardening this afternoon. The bonfire burnt slowly all night, but there' still plenty of rubbish
Frances encloses her school work of this morning, to prove she does sometime get her sums right. Love from us both, Ursula

Thursday 27th Felmersham
Darling Johnnie Do you remember that we saw an advert when you were here for the new series of WEA lectures, on the 19th Century at the Rectory here? The first one took place last night, and I organised Miss McLeod to listen for Frances while I went. It was very enjoyable indeed. The lecturer was a woman. Dr. Baker, by name, who spoke very well and informally. There were about 30 people there, I should think and every now & then we broke into discussion encouraged by the lecturer & altogether it was most interesting. The first lecture was more or less a survey of the state of the world in the 18th Century. There are to be 12 lectures in all, And I very much hope I shall be able to attend most of them. Miss McLeod declares herself quite willing to “listen” for Frances, so it all seems alright.
I went in Gerrards Cross this morning & banked £6 (£4 from last week, as I survived without spending anything except our fares home from Marston) So I shall easily be in a position to finance you this weekend. By the way I have designs on an old woolley vest of yours. I was going through your stock this morning & find you have 3 or 4 summer vests & pants & the same of winter ones, apart from what you have with you (or will you have to give any back?) Anyway the one I'm after is badly gone under both arms & between the shoulders, but the lower part will make a grand pair of winter pants for Frances which she urgently needs, so it looks as tho' you've had it as far as the vest is concerned! I dug up nearly all the potatoes yesterday & hope to finish them off this afternoon & I had a brainwave & stored them temporarily in the end rabbit hutches till they have dried off completely & can be put in sacks. There's quite a good crop, I think, & they look pretty sound to me.
Thanks for your letter of Tuesday. Pity the old oak fender was the wrong size, it sounds rather nice. By the way, don't forget to bring the plug for the bathroom bowl when you come. No sign from Mr Hatchett yet. Have told Mrs Evans we can't manage this weekend, so she said just let her know when you get your leave & she'll fix it up then. I hope she does, I like both of them very much & should like to cultivate their friendship. She was at the WEA meeting last night, so was Mrs Groom, the village schoolmaster's wife, Miss Pewley the District Nurse, the Plumbs, Joan Noye in the distance (I didn't see her to speak to) &sundry others I knew. Quite a party!
All my love to you darling, when you get this you should soon be on your way home to me, hurrah! Yours always, Ursula.
P.S. Dearest Johnnie, re meeting you this weekend: There is a fair on at St Peter's which Frances would love to go to if the weather is fine. I thought we could go early in the afternoon & meet you at the Pheasant instead of coming right out to the station (Amersham or Little Ch.) if you wouldn't mind just this once. That is, of course, if the weather is propitious, if not we'd come to the station. So would you come, in any case, to Little Chalfont. If the weather's bad, we'll meet you there, but if its not actually raining cats & dogs, or we don't show up, you catch the 335 at 4.33 pm (I don't expect you'd make the 3.33 would you?) & wait for us at the Pheasant in the bus shelter. We'll be there by 4.15 when you're due & then we can go home together or what you will. So if we're not at the station, wait for us at the Pheasant – OK?
Must dash off to the hairdresser now, & make myself beautiful (?) for your lordship. Thanks for your letter & one to small. All my love Ursula
PS The thing from Gamages has arrived

Darling Johnnie,
Thank you for your letter of Monday evening. I’m glad you had a reasonable journey home. Nothing much to report this end. I am confining myself strictly to house & garden, so as to keep the £3 intact for the bank!! I’m going to dig some potatoes this afternoon and do other gardening jobs. Don’t you think it would be nice if we had spring-flowering bulbs growing along under the hedge on the far side of the lawn?
There are such a lot of things I want to do this autumn & changes we could make in the garden][deleted]ing[/deleted], that I’m going to get ahead with the duller jobs so that we can tackle the others together.
Lots of love to you my dearest one, the weekend will soon be here now. We’ll meet you at Amersham unless you specify anything different.
Always yours,
[underlined] Ursula [/underlined]

Tuesday 25/9.
Darling Johnnie,
I am looking forward to hearing [deleted] you [/deleted] how you survived your early morning start on Monday. I went back to bed again and slept till 8 am!
Since writing to you last night things here have gone according to plan, ie Frances started school this morning, and I did the washing and have got it all dry too, its such a glorious day of wind and sun. We’ve decided to go out for a walk this afternoon to look for blackberries and wood
[page break]
- there should be quite a bit of the latter after this high wind. There was no post at all this morning – at least that means a rest from SSAFA work. I want to get cracking on some winter dressmaking next, & when I’m all set I hope Jean will lend me her machine. I’m sorry about Bunty’s old one, but if it means that in the end we shall be able to get the very latest model with all gadgets, it’ll be worth waiting for. Meantime I stitch away by hand.
Lots of love from us both to you, darling This week will soon go & you’ll be home with us again, Yours always Ursula

Sept. 17th
Darling Johnnie,
I do hope your journey back wasn’t too crowded and uncomfortable, it certainly made all the difference having you for the afternoon, and it is grand having the front hedge tidied up.
I planted out the Siberian wallflowers after Frances was in bed, & hope to do some more gardening this afternoon.
I had a letter from Bunty this morning saying she had managed to get herself another electric kettle and wants us to keep the one she lent us for a present. This is very kind of her, and altho’ [sic] it isnt [sic] actually the right voltage for this district it is distinctly better
[page break]
than nothing. So I shall write and thank her kindly. She also suggested again that we should meet you there for a weekend. How about it? It would be rather nice wouldn’t it. Shall we try & do it the weekend after next? There isn’t time to arrange it for next weekend now, I think.
By the way one thing I have been wanting for a long time is a coffee percolator, so if you see one in the course of snooping around Loughborough, remember me! I shall be interested to hear if the bronze & brass fender is the right size.
The enclosed poem was in yesterdays Observer, I thought it was rather lovely.
I’m longing for next weekend already!
All my love darling Ursula

Felmersham,
Thursday, 13th Sept.
Darling Johnnie,
I was so glad to get your letter of 10th this morning and to hear of your visit to the Rotary lunch and the invitations that arose from it. Pity it was such a poor lunch, but anyway it was worth while if you get some decent music. I hope that the orchestra may even spur you on to pluck up courage and play yourself.
The stool you found sounds just the thing for us, but I am afraid this letter may be too late for you to do anything about it, unless you have been so daring as to buy it off your own bat! I have got a small piece of material to match the sitting-room upholstery which would probably be big enough to cover it. I do hope you’ll get it and bring it with you when you come. I have asked Mr. Leverett to meet you and he says he will, at Little Chalfont station on Sat. at 3.30. I won’t go with him because there wouldn’t be room coming back with all the furniture. I told him you’d have some stuff with you, I hope he won’t be too staggered when he sees what it is, but he could hardly refuse to bring you, though he might be frightened off if I told him in advance that he was to bring a radiogram! I hope you enjoyed the concert at Leicester; there has been some quite good music on the radio this week, so I haven’t done too badly either. I had a letter from Ba this morning, saying she had to wait 2 1/2 hours for a taxi after you
[page break]
-2-
left her on Saturday – what a life! She seems to be liking her job, and suggests that if we ever want to have a night in town, doing a show, dancing or anything frivolous like that, she would come out here and spend the night with Frances. Sounds like a grand idea to me! There was also a letter for Flying Officer Valentine, which turned out to be an advice note from Morgans, the ironmongers at Loughborough, saying they sent off our goods on 11th Sept., so they ought to be here by the weekend if they are going to arrive at all. I haven’t got around to putting up the shelf yet, though I have bought the 1 1/2" nails. However, I’ll try to do it before you come, as you will have lots to play at with the radiogram. Joan Nove asked us to go round there on Saturday evening or for coffee at 11 a.m. on Sunday, so I chose the latter as being the less time-wasting of the two. This afternoon we have a school-friend of Frances’s to tea, with mother and baby brother – an awful bore really but Frances does need some juvenile company while she isn’t getting any at school. Must go and cut some sandwiches now. I’m so glad you managed to get Frances’s sandal taken in for repair and hope you’ll be able to bring it back when you come.
Frances says she loves the basket very much, please may she have a bigger one when she is bigger. She sends two kisses.
Come home soon darling, I’m longing to see you again.
Yours always,
Ursula

Darling Johnnie,
There was no letter from you this morning, the post is certainly very queer.
Frances & I had quite a long expedition yesterday on SSAFA business. We went right over to the far side of Little Chalfont & eventually located a woman in a house that stank so much Frances couldn’t bear to stay inside! It was quite a decent modern house too, its shocking what a slut can do. We went to see Mrs Pearce too & found the bird flown & L/Bdr. Pearce insole possession sadly packing up his belongings. He looked quite a decent sort, &

I should say the whole sad story could have been avoided if the in-laws had kept out of it & the husband been allowed to leave earlier. We had some tea at the Golden Hind to strengthen us for the return journey, & very nice it was.
I’ve decided that Hans & his ladylove would [underlined] far [/underlined] rather have 6 silver teaspoons than an early Victorian box, and I would rather have the latter than a formal set of teaspoons which we don’t use. So I’m sending off the teaspoons with our love & so on, and I’m just thrilled to bits with the writing-box. I wonder if you’ll like it too. I’ve put it on my desk, & exchanged the lamp from our bedroom with the one

from the desk, and it looks much nicer now. I get a terrific kick out of rearranging the furnishings like this. Of course if you can’t bear the box or think I’ve been too extravagant, we could doubtless sell it again. If I’d only thought of the spoons [underlined] before [/underlined] going shopping of course I’d never have got it – but I’m glad I have.
I’m got my hair ‘swept up’ & its stayed up throughout the mornings work which I think is pretty good.
I do hope I’ll have a letter from you tomorrow darling.
All my love & a big kiss from Frances
Yours always
Ursula

An account of the resource
674 Items. Collection concerns navigator Warrant Officer J R McKenzie Valentine (1251404 Royal Air Force). The collection contains over 600 letters between JRM Valentine and his wife Ursula. It also contains his log book, family/official documents, a book of violin music studies and other correspondence. Sub-collections contain family photographs, prisoner of war photographs and a scrapbook of newspaper cuttings of events from 1942 to 1945.
He joined 49 Squadron in April 1942 and flew 10 operations on Hampdens. The squadron converted to Manchester in May when he completed two further operations. His aircraft was shot down on the Thousand Bomber raid of 30/31 May 1942. Five crew, including him bailed out successfully and became prisoners of war. The pilot and one air gunner were killed when the aircraft rolled over and crashed.
The collection has been donated to the IBCC Digital Archive by Frances Zagni and catalogued by Nigel Huckins.

Tuesday 11th Sept.
Darling Johnnie,
Thank you for your letter Sunday evening, so glad you had a peaceful journey back. Nothing very exciting has happened here. I was ironing all yesterday evening except for an hour’s practise. I am becoming terribly attached to this writing box I have bought for Hans Lensing, & am very much tempted to send them something else & keep it myself! It’s a most attractive thing. I think

and it would be sickening if it just didn’t happen to appeal to them. I suppose I shall have to be strong-minded about it! Or must I?
The lambskin rug has come, its very soft & nice; it is in its natural condition, & I propose to trim it off & mount it on felt, if I can get any, as its rather an odd shape now. It will go on the side of the bed near the door, as it shows more. By the way, are you [underlined] sure [/underlined] you wouldn’t rather sleep nearer the window?
Must get cracking on the afternoon schedule.
All my love dearest
Ursula.

No sign of the tools yet – would you like to find out if & when they were dispatched? Pity really that you couldn’t bring them with you, as we’re having the taxi
