He flew operations from RAF Bardney as an air gunner with 9 Squadron and was killed in action along with other members of his crew on 13 July 1944. In reply to your letter of the 1st July, 1945, it is advised with deep regret that Flight Sergeant PAYNE and the members of his crew are buried in the Local Cemetery of Cour L’Eveque. Flight Sergeant PAYNE’S grave is No.1.
