Interview with Ferdi Righi
World War (1939-1945)
Bombing, Aerial
Ferdinando Righi recalls his early life in Monfalcone, brought up by his mother while his father served as a submariner. Describes daily life in wartime: how he used to sleep fully clothed, waiting for the air raid siren. His mother would put some food and spare clothing in a case, wrap him in a blanket and rush to the underground shelter. He remembers how he and other children used the unpaved surface of the shelter as a sandbox, while schoolteachers resorted to storytelling to keep them calm. Relates wartime stories: a shell-shocked horse being put-down; dying victims covered in dust being evacuated and panic stricken townsfolk afraid that they would not reach the shelter in time. He comments on how the anxiety lasted for years and has lessened only recently, and describes how wartime memories still haunt him when he walks past bomb-site areas that have never been rebuilt.

Interview with Livio Ponte
World War (1939-1945)
Bombing, Aerial
Livio Ponte remembers his wartime life in Monfalcone. He describes the frightening moments when the alarm sounded, usually at night and people rushed to the shelters for safety. He mentions different attitudes: his parents going to a shelter whereas he and his brother preferred to go to the castle, where a natural cave had been adapted. He mentions pastimes and daily life under the bombs, how "Pippo" used to fly over Monfalcone and recollects people in constant fear of the Germans. He mentions a German soldier who said Hitler was a national disgrace for Germany. He describes how he used to spend school holidays at his grandparents place at Aris, a village in rural Friuli, because it was supposed to be a safer place. He describes a shot-down aircraft.

Interview with Mario Commisso
World War (1939-1945)
Bombing, Aerial
Mario Commisso remembers his early years when he lived in the Codroipo area, close to the Rivolto air base. Describes his brother being born on 28 February 1941 during a severe bombing raid during which the bombers were attacked by anti-aircraft fire and German fighters. Describes how "Pippo" was guided with the help of ground signals lit by the partisans, sometimes with tragic results. Describes how civilians salvaged scrap metal and mentions acquaintances who died when mishandling live ammunition. Recalls a big explosion at the Codroipo railway station and Spitfires dropping bombs on open fields, trying not to hit civilian buildings. Recalls stories about the end of the war: how the Rivolto air base had been prepared for demolition and abandoned tanks at Passariano being disassembled by adults while youngsters were salvaging clothing, blankets and ball bearings.

They recall the day when, just as a magician's show was about to commence, a bombing raid started and people dashed to the shelter,Two of the victims of this event were acquaintances. They recall a bombing raid when they couldn’t find the house keys and saw target indicators falling on the town. They remember the Germans retreating at the end of the war, having completely destroyed the shipyard.

Interview with Mario Miniussi
World War (1939-1945)
Bombing, Aerial
Mario Miniussi recalls the 18 March 1944 Monfalcone night bombing. He was sleeping when the siren sounded; then he saw the bombs falling on the shipyard among explosions and fires. Remembers how he was normally at school during alarms, so he and his schoolmates had to dash to the castle for cover. Mario describes different attitudes of civilians under the bombs: children were cheerful and played games, while adults preferred to talk. Describes the day an aircraft was hit by anti-aircraft fire and some splinters nearly injured him. Mentions how his parents eventually took him and his brother to their grandparents house at Fiumicello, where they spent one year as evacuees.

Bombing, Aerial
Gualtiero Silvio Cosolo recalls attending the Ceriani vocational school in Monfalcone, at this time the air raid siren went off every day and the children would run to the nearest shelter. Describes the 7 March 1944 bombing and the gruesome sight of dead shipyard workers, an event which scared him for years to come. Remembers the sense of oppression when he first went to a public shelter. Contrasted the behaviour of boys laughing out loudly and messing around, and the composure of adults who looked worried and thoughtful. Recalls the rivalries among boys from different towns and neighbourhoods and describes the blackout precautions of the dockyard workers. Recounts memories of his dad and friends who evaded roundup and managed to escape to Slovenia and later took part in the Battle of Gorizia, a series of actions between Germans and partisans. Recounted acting as a lookout when partisans used his home as a meeting place.

Interview with a survivor of the Karigador bombing
World War (1939-1945)
Bombing, Aerial
The informant recalls the day when he and his cousin plundered a ship with a cargo of furniture, clothing and foodstuffs, which was moored at Karigador. He describes how the harbour was suddenly bombed and strafed. Remembers how they hid behind a hedge and realised that the bombs didn’t hit the ship but the shoreline, leaving a large hole in the sand. Mentions nuns from a nearby convent looking for wounded or dead people.
Mentions a group of partisans showing up at his home, asking aggressively for men ready to join the resistance movement. Describes how his father, his uncle and a friend remained hidden, while the partisans ransacked the house for items of clothing.

Interview with Guido Di Blas and Ilario Bolletti
World War (1939-1945)
Projectiles, Aerial
Guido Di Blas and Ilario Bolletti recount wartime memories associated with the town of Monfalcone and the surrounding area. Describes a severe night of bombing stressing the ominous sight of target indicators and loud explosions; recalls the massive loss of life when local children who were gathered to watch a magician's show, found themselves under attack. Recounts the appalling sight of many corpses placed in improvised morgues. Describes local shelters, some being modified First World War structures. Recollects a bomber being shot down and the stir caused by the sight of a black airman; remembers the strafing of a railway station when the aircraft was so close he could clearly see the pilot. Mentions various wartime stories: conscription dodgers trying to escape roundups, reprisals, the ominous presence of "Pippo", and a German armoured train opening fire. Recollects how people tried to get by and circumvent rationing: electrical supply by tapping overhead power lines, pilfering supplies from goods trains, bribing Fascist officers to make them turn a blind eye, trading stolen salt for flour. Describes post-war hardships when they salvaged shell cases and metal splinters for their scrap value, and mentions improvised pyrotechnic devices made with explosives taken from live ammunition. Recalls people injured or killed by improper handling of live shells. Reflects on the legitimacy of attacking non-military targets and the feeling of hopelessness this created. In the photograph, Guido Di Blas is on the left and Ilario Bolletti is on the right.

World War (1939-1945)
Bombing, Aerial
Stefania Vischi recalls her wartime life in the Monfalcone area. Stresses how she spent long hours alone inside a shelter, frightened by explosions and tremors. Contrasts the horror of being at the receiving end of the bombing war and the strong community spirit among the population.
