My dear Douglas.
Yesterday I sent a cable to you “thrilled, two photos Monday, lovely autumn morning, wish well. all love. Hudson.” & now I am eagerly awaiting your reply. In one of your recent letters written in July you ask if have had all the replies [deleted] your [/deleted] [inserted] my [/inserted] cables to you. & by this time you will have got one or two letters assuring you of their safe arrival. My last letter, written to you on Thursday night, told of the safe arrival of your photos & how very delighted we are to have them. I do hope you haven’t had to sacrifice too much to pay for them. I just wish I could send you a little extra money occasionally.
Yesterday, when I sent the cable, was a most beautiful autumn day. with warm sunshine following a very heavy dew & the country looked very pleasant & fresh. Memories crowded thick & fast memories of the happy days when we rode so happily together down the Cheshire lanes. In one of your letters you say you hope we’ll have many more happy rides together. I wonder!!!
Following the lovely day yesterday today has been very poor. with rain & very heavy mist. almost like fog.
[page break]
I understand that this is a bad place for fog. & more than ever dread the winter as Dad has a long journey to the works. He has had a fortnight of night duties & it feels nice not to have to worry. I think about them for two weeks. He starts again next Tuesday & as winter approaches the hours are longer & Dad expects to have to stay at the works all day & night when his turn comes round once in eight days. I think I’ve told you before he has no actual duties – it is just a case of being on the spot in case it’s necessary.
Did you get the letter from Ted Hole? I hope you did. He wrote to [deleted] you [/deleted] [inserted] me [/inserted] such a nice letter & I have not yet replied to him. I think I told you he had been stationed in Iver but has now gone away again. It looks as tho’ [sic] John has not been moved yet. Mrs Clayton would have let me know, & think, especially if all hopes had been realized.
Grandad [sic] is going home on Tuesday. He has slept very well. & has seemed quite happy here. tho’ sic] there are a great many things not to his liking.
Now love I must say Goodnight again & hope I shall be able to write longer letters to you after next week meanwhile Dad & I send all our love. On 2nd thoughts I’ll leave my letter until morning. Perhaps there may be a letter from you. Monday morning. No luck re letters from you so I just go on hoping. At least it is (or they are) some thing to look forward to. Goodbye & God bless you always.

My dear “Children”.
And it is no use Douglas saying “I wish you wouldn’t say my boy” because I suppose you will always be children to us.
My little note is just to say how much we are thinking of you both during this first day of your holiday. I [underlined] was [/underlined] sorry to hear rain pattering on the window this morning but it cleared again about 11 a.m. & is quite pleasant again tho’ there’s not much sunshine.
We were all so glad that
[page break]
we got in a first-class carriage & rode most comfortably until we got to Bank Top where the football crowds rushed the train & we travelled to Nelson with [underlined] 27 [/underlined] passengers in our carriage. We got in home about 6 & had a nice rest before proceeding to the worst cinema show I’ve ever seen. (“Dad’s luck again as Miss Chester said”). She came back with us for another cup of tea & I’ve bid her goodnight at 11-40. She told us this a.m. that Mr & Mrs Chester were waiting [inserted] up [/inserted] for her, to hear all the news which I thought rather nice of them. Now I must say
[page break]
Goodbye to you both.
With all our love & every good wish from
Mother & Dad.

Fancy getting this at M’cambe. Talk about memories.!! Thanks for letter received yesterday afternoon. Hope you will have a good weekend. Also that the car will not prove to be a pig in a poke & that you will get a lot of joy from it. I can imagine how useful it will be. I asked Dad if he know a source of “gas” but he does not. However it will soon be the end of August, then I suppose you can get what you want. We have just finished a good breakfast & soon shall be wending our way into the fresh air. The weather has been marvellous since Sunday. A little rain this morning now it looks like getting up hot.
Goodbye now from Morecambe. Love from
Mother & Dad.

My dear Douglas
You will be surprised to read that I am writing this letter to you sitting in the Imperial Café at Ilkley at 12-15. We came by train to Skipton & on the[?] bus to Ilkley. It is a lovely morning & we are glad we have come. [paragraph symbol] 1-10 pm & now we are sitting on the moor[?] after quite a good meal. We had the carriage to ourselves in the train to Skipton but the bus was packed. There is only an hourly service so we shall get away early & perhaps call to see Hole’s[?] tho’ [sic] we may decide to go straight home on the 5.38 train. We had a good day at Manchester & I ordered the glasses which will be forwarded in about 3 weeks. Dad bought me a most beautiful pair of gloves, in good time for my Xmas & birthday present. I am very thrilled to have them. When we had been home a little while Mrs Haworth brought your parcel which had arrived by the afternoon post.

My dear Douglas,
I am still wondering if it is true – if you have really finished those dangerous journeys which kept us just terribly anxious all the time. I shall be happier when I have a letter from you. The last one received was No. 29 on Wed. am. Then Dad brought the great news of No. 30. in the evening. I just can’t express my feelings – Thankful beyond words - & always in my thoughts & prayers are the boys who are now exposed to the horrors of the invasion. I think so much of John & wonder if he were one of the invaders. What a great day when Peace comes
[page break]
again & all the barbarity of war is left behind!!!
I have a very kind letter from Alice this am. She very very happy about your achievement & very proud about it too. Well love there just doesn’t seem to be any news except the weather. We have not had any rain, beyond a drizzly mist, since last night. But if my tooties are anything to go by it doesn’t mean we shall not have any before the end of the day. We’ve had the wettest period ever & Dad just managed to mow the lawns last night. Last time was Tues. week, almost a record I think.
Goodbye now love & always I’m wondering about you, when to expect you etc. & [inserted] as [/inserted] ever all our love & thoughts & prayers are with you from Mother & Dad.

My dear Douglas.
Congratulations on achieving your 30. You know, love, I just can’t think what to say. The news which Dad brought last night was very wonderful. & as I have told you before we are very proud of you = & more than that, so very happy in your love & thought for us. Now we eagerly await your home coming. I know it will be a severe strain on you to say Goodbye your old companions & to good old Rooster who has done such a grand job. But I know, too, that you will bring away many happy memories, - & the great joy of labour & service attempted & achieved. Of course I am
[page break]
eager to know what your new duties will be but the days pass very quickly & you will soon be home now & will tell us all the news.
Dad was very excited to bring me such good news last night & he asks me to tell you he was very sorry he could scarcely hear you speaking. He said your voice was just like a whisper a very long way off. But, as I said, he [underlined] was [/underlined] able to hear the grand news, that has brought so much relief & pride to us.
Now I must say Goodbye love & write a line to Auntie Maud for her birthday tomorrow, I think she is 61.
Always all our love & thoughts & prayers are with you & may peace come quickly & bring happiness & content to everyone. Mother & Dad.

My dear Douglas.
My precious letter No 29 came this morning bringing the usual feelings, only much more intense. Thank you so very much for letting us have the letters so regularly – they mean so much to us./. The events of the past day or too have been more than a little disturbing. The many people who have no loved ones exposed to all the horrors of war glibly remark “Well – it had to be”. I couldn’t express my feelings. “Truly we marvel & we wonder why life is life”.
Now love I am wondering all the time when you will be coming home. It is very kind of you to suggest my coming
[page break]
to meet you & “ [indecipherable word] “ in Manchester but I don’t think it would be wise these unsettled day to arrange to meet anywhere but at home. Would you care to bring Jack here for a day or two? You know we would do our best to make him comfortable & he would understand the difficulty of entertaining in war-time. Just please yourself love & make what plans you wish but try to let me know so I can get the other bed ready. Today has been beautiful with strong breeze & sunshine & all my laundry is dried out-of-doors ready for ironing. I must go to the post first, I want you to have your letters. So Goodbye now love & always day & night all our love & thoughts & prayers are with you & we eagerly await your home coming. from Mother & Dad.

My dear Douglas.
Thank you very much for two precious letters 28 & Sunday received this morning. As the number is steadily mounting I just keep on looking forward to having you home again. We have been so very proud of you during the past months & grateful beyond telling that you emerged from that horrible prison in Africa so little changed. Our sole aim since you were born has been to give you happiness & I have been proud in deed that you have found it in your latest service. For the future I pray for courage, wisdom, & guidance for all of us. I do believe as Shakespeare wrote 300 years ago.
[page break]
“There’s a divinity that shapes our ends rough-hew them how we will”. I understand so well just how you feel about the change that appears to be imminent in your service career, but I feel confident that whatever sphere you enter, it will be, as always, in service that demands & receives the best you can give. And we shall just keep on being proud of you & sharing with you the joy of endeavour & success./. I am expecting Auntie Gladys in about 1/2 an hr. so will say Goodbye now. So glad to have a little news of John./. Always, day & night all our love & thoughts & prayers are with you & we are looking forward eagerly to your little holiday. From Mother & Dad.

An account of the resource
Thanks him for previous two letters and notes that the numbers keep mounting. Proud of him that he emerged little changed from his time as internee in Africa. Say they are proud of his current service and looking to the future of his career. Concludes as she is expecting a visitor.

DATE 15th Oct./ 42 1942
My dear Douglas,
As you suggested that the news may reach you more quickly on this Special Air Mail form here is a trial letter which on the ordinary paper would be No 89. We were very delighted to have a letter from you on Tues. dated September 10th. It had come by Air Mail & bore stamps value 7 francs 50 cents, one 5 francs, one 1 franc, & one 1 franc 50 cents. The letter by registered post cost 11 francs. Of course I am keeping all the letters & no doubt the stamps will provide much interest in future. Today I have been to Burnley & have bought 2 pairs of socks & one shirt with collar attached. Next week I intend to get your parcel off. I was interested to learn that the Red X had added some little gifts to my first parcel. I wonder what they were. I have told you in a previous letter that the method of sending parcels to laghouat has been alterred [sic] & I imagine it will take longer to reach you but we must just hope for the best. I had a very happy little letter from John’s Mollie (Sheldrake). Did I tell you that Mrs Clayton thought the engagement would be announced quite soon & she seems quite pleased about it. I shall be writing for Dorothy’s birthday on November 5th & will tell her how pleased you were to have her letters. Goodbye now love . It does seem a very short letter. More news about your parcel next letter. Should be glad to learn you received the 2nd one all our love Mother & Dad.

My dear Douglas
This is a pleasant Autumn morning & I am wondering if it is cooler & pleasant with you too. We have reluctantly bid Goodbye to summer now. The lawns look damp & are covered with worm casts which means that mowing is [deleted] at [/deleted] almost at an end for this year. I have grown some Canterbury bells from seed & on Tuesday I planted them “into their flowering quarters” (says she optimistically). There are one or two very lovely gardens around here, tended like children by elderly retired gentlemen. They seem to be quite tickled by my enthusiasm & always stop to have a word in passing. The Canterbury bells seemed to be rather an idea to them I don’t think they had just realised the possibilities. Do you remember what a lovely display Grandad Hudson used to have at Chestnut Grove? I believe Dad thinks mine will compete favourably. I seem to be always writing gardens & books to you but they are my cheifest joys in these days of enforced separation. We have some beautiful thrushes in the gardens & I never see one without recalling the one on the gate in the Cheshire Lane. Weren’t we both thrilled with it?
[page break]
I wonder if you are recalling too, those pleasant days three years ago, when we wandered happily along the lanes gathering blackberries. In your letter of July 22nd you wonder if you will want to settle down around home when you return to it. I don’t think so. The present abnormal conditions are only a phase which will pass & pleasure in travel will return bringing no doubt greater realisation of joy & blessing. I often wonder if you & John will resume the old happy relationship. John says yes. I hope so too. You will both bring into the association new thoughts & ideas & a much wider outlook. I am looking forward to seeing John tomorrow. The last [deleted] night [/deleted] [inserted] time [/inserted] was when we were at Kensal & he brought Eric, from London, along to see me, one morning shortly after we heard that you were safe. It must be nearly two years. I am eagerly awaiting more letters. The last ones July 27 - 21 - 22 in that order. I am hoping to receive snaps too. In a previous letter I told you I had been able to buy a sponge [inserted] to send to you [/inserted] & now consider I was very lucky to get one cheap. There was one in a chemist’s window in town yesterday 13/11. In happier days we could have bought a similar article for 1/-. Before this letter reaches you I hope to have sent another next - of - kin parcel & will try to get shirts with collars attached. Goodbye now once again. With all our love & thoughts & prayers from Mother & Dad.

Writes that summer is over and mention planting seeds. Mentions that there are some nice gardens locally and that their garden would compete with grandad's. Garden is her chief joy which is why she mentions it in many letters. Wonders about the future and relationships. Catches up with news of family and friends. Eagerly awaiting his next letters.

My dear Douglas.
It was a great joy to us to have two letters from you yesterday. The dates were July 21st & 22nd & they acknowledged the snaps which have apparently given you pleasure. The one of me sitting in the deck chair is quite absurd. The camera has surely lied this time by making an old lady into a young one. The picture doesn’t show the white hair & wrinkles, but they are there alright a very forceful reminder of the flight of time. I have gained a lot of weight but Dad seems to go thinner every week. At present he is working extra time & that worries me, as I do feel he has enough to do in normal hours. To revert to the letters it was two weeks ago that we received one letter dated July 27th on a Thursday & on the following Saturday the post-card [inserted] dated July 31st [/inserted] with greetings from “the post-man” & later the cable, which messages brought much pleasure. It is grand to learn that Red Cross supplies have begun to arrive again &O that you have got a small amount of fuel on which to boil water for tea-making. I can well imagine how much you enjoy your cups of tea. I should miss that [inserted] or them [/inserted] more than anything. By ration is very severe 2 ozs each per week & I am thankful to a few people
[page break]
who do not use even that & so let me buy it from them. Yesterday I had a letter from Mrs Clayton with the news that John is coming home on Wednesday & would I try to go for a day while he is home so I shall go either Thursday or Friday & shall then be able to give you a little news of him. Presently I shall write to Mrs Bowers. It would have been Harry’s birthday tomorrow, Sept 30th. He was just that little younger than you wasn’t he? You mention sleeping out - of – doors & I am wondering what you sleep on. Do you drag your bed outside or just lie on the ground? It doesn’t sound very comfortable. The field of oats, across the way (which I have mentioned to you before) was cut yesterday but it does not look typical English harvest as it is very green. Much of it is in stooks but some lying on the ground as though it is useless & it does seem such a pity. We have not had any rain since I wrote to you last but every thing seems to be so thoroughly soaked & we have heavy morning & evening mist with about four hours sunshine. The birds are beginning to come for food again. It is some weeks since I first saw my very tame robin. I am hoping soon to hear of the safe arrival of your second “next – of – kin parcel” parcel & am wondering whether to send another pair of shoes or wait to see if the others are all right. Cable any requirements. Goodbye again love. A few days nearer peace & glad reunion. All our love & thoughts & prayers.
Mother & Dad.
