better lay in a good stock of brown paper and string.
The uniform isn't taking shape as I [hole in paper] owing to a slight muddle about the cloth, but I think it's settled now at last; I've got a whipcord, slightly greenish and fairly heavy. I had an awful job deciding from the patterns, but I saw the roll of stuff today, and it's certainly much nicer than the barathea. The man doesn't seem quite sure whether I'm allowed it, but I'm pretty sure no-one will notice it; it's a very unobtrusive cord. No pleated or baggy pockets, I'm afraid, but I don't think it will look too bad. I tried on a beret today; it made me look like a pastry cook.
My friend Ted is going to be a W.O. in the very near future - probably before I go to Oxford so he really
[page break]
hasn't done too badly. I asked if I could be a sergeant or something just for a couple of weeks, for the fun (and also the money) [hole in paper] it, but my C.O. said no, he'd have to fill in too many forms for it to be worth his while. Which all goes to shew what a ridiculous place this is. Three of them are probably becoming W.O.s – Ted Beard, who's far too benevolent, another bloke who's a communistic intellectual in manner and appearance, and a third who just hasn't the pres[character deleted]ence for a W.O., if you know what I mean. Not that I have any illusions as to what I shall look like as an officer.
I must knock off now and go and see if my cap is still knocking about the cinema floor. I hope you are enjoying life as gentle-folk! Love to all.

work from Eashing to Francombe. The training has taken up all week-ends so that the time left for work etc. has been remarkably little. Today (Monday) is what is generally known as the”pseudo-exeat” - to wit, a whole holiday in which one can do practically anything except go in a bus or train. They reckon are[sic] journeys would not be really necessary. We disagree.
Any chance of seeing you [character deleted] next holidays?

Dear William,
Many happy returns of the day. I wish you had a wedding every year, instead of only once. It made a very pleasant interlude. Also I've only congratulated you on your prospective parentage (or is it - hood?) rather hastily on the telephone, so please take this as a confirmatory copy. It really is a very fine show. Are you going to have it christened in a Wellington or anything comic? It should please its grand-parents immensly [sic]. I hope its an ugly infant, then it should grow up handsome. I believe we were all cherubic babies. I hope Joyce is O.K.
How are you these days? I hear from Ian that your boils have returned which is hard luck. I suppose you will be off on Ops. again soon. I've been trying
[page break]
to get into Air Crews myself, but they say that I am definitely ineligible; if I have a fair chance of a Commission, I shall go for the Royal Corps of Sigs, but I don't want to spend the war as an operator or an instrument mechanic – I'd rather foot-slog I think. Or possibly gunners. Everyone except me seems to have very definite ideas on what I'm going to do, but they don't all agree, & its rather confusing. I shall probably end up in the Sikh Pioneer Corps or something funny like that. We're being pushed through Battle Drill now, by a Coy. of the Royal Sussex who have come down to train the H.G. And very well they are doing it too. It takes up all our weekend, so we have less spare time than ever now, but it's great fun.
Love to Joyce.
Yours,
Uncle(-elect) Norman

Dear Willie,
Many congratulations on the infant, which I hear arrived on Monday. I was pretty disgusted to be told that it was a niece, but the mere fact of being an uncle at all has swollen my self-respect immensly [sic] against the ravages made upon it by our Corporal. He isn't really so bad, but he has a somewhat excessively loud bark. The Sergeant is really a very decent young fellow, and we did have a charming Corporal, but he's in hospital.
Anyway, it's a very fine show. I
[page break]
had considered, if it was a boy, blackmailing you with the threat of sending Joyce the more loathsome pictures of you in infancy, to shew her what to expect; but perhaps Frances will take after [inserted] her [/inserted] Mother, in which case she would have some hope.
The militia spend their time grumbling solidly, while the volunteers tell each other how much they are enjoying it, to justify themselves for their folly. It hasn't been bad so far, though we have not yet come in contact with any Sergeant-Majors, so that joy is still to come. The most hectic time is is 6-8 a.m., when there seem to be so many things which you can't
[page break]
do the night before. They've even stopped us shaving in the evening, in hot water, now, on the ground that it grows again in the night. And to think I used to shave once every three days at home!
Give my best wishes to Joyce; I really am awfully thrilled about it all, and I hope they are both doing well. I'm sorry I can't attend the christening; but I hope I'll be further South after Xmas, and I might be able to get down for 48 hours and see my niece some time.
Your affectionate brother,
Uncle Norman.

Dear Willie,
Apologies for not writing before to thank you for the b.p. The chocolate was very welcome, & I spent a pleasant week-end eating it solidly; and I've grown quite attached to the Prune family. [deleted] Theye [/deleted] Their continued existence seems to me a complete proof of the efficient working of the process of Natural Selection.
I'm afraid I've lost your letter; but I hear that Frances is the biggest infant ever – you'd better send her photo to the Daily Express for “Believe it or Not”. Life is not all bad, especially since we've got rid of the objectionable Corporal in exchange for a very mild, elderly Green Howard. We even have a Domestic Servant – a Room
[page break]
Orderly, to be precise, though he hasn't done very much so far. We've just been vaccinated, though the effects have not yet come into action; they will doubtless do so at some particularly inconvenient stage of our training. It's getting pretty cold up here, but there's a silver lining, since they have to give us hot water to prevent the pipes freezing up; & we hope to get it some time this week. Also, of course, the late dawns mean late parades, as you have doubtless found yourself; or perhaps bigwigs like you [word deleted] appear when you please – certainly we see very few officers, even mere one-pips about [deleted] before [/deleted] during the early hours.
Love to Joyce & Frances, & I hope [deleted] are [/deleted] they are both getting on O.K.

Dear Willy,
Many thanks for your letter; I'm sorry I've never answered it before. I should be very pleased indeed to go bail for the infant, and am greatly honoured by your invitation. I also think Anna Frances is excellent; the only thing is that, if you call her Frances as far as everyday use is concerned it might be better to put it first. I've found that it is generally assumed by people who know both [word deleted] my names that Gerald is the one used, being the first, & a certain amount of confusion had ensued. This is, of course, an extremely minor consideration, & deserves the contempt it will no doubt receive.
I'm sorry Joyce is having such a tough time of it; I hope she's pulling up now. Mama writes in glowing terms of her grand-child. Thanks also for your wishes regarding N.C.O's and hot water. The latter is flowing copiously, and all the N.C.Os
[page break]
have lost their voices and so your wishes have been well fulfilled. I'm busy going sick these days, with fair success; the others marched 5 miles in the rain & back last Tuesday, to throw 1 live grenade each, but 14410589 happened to have vaccine fever the night before; & he rather thinks he's going to have a slight relapse of his gastritis (a lovely name for tummy-ache) when they go on the moors tomorrow night. Hang it, it [underlined] is [/underlined] his birthday..... We've also got the Assault Course and various other joys this week. We leave on the 16th, 10 days hence, & we shan't be sorry – it's getting too overcrowded here, we have to queue up all day long. I don't know where I'll go yet. A bloke carved up my face with a bayonet the other day, which sounds jolly good, but actually of course he only pricked my upper lip; I can't even say he ran it though. Love to all,
[underlined] Norman [/underlined]

Dear Willie
Further to our combined (for economy) wire or 26 July, many hearty congratulations on the new DSO. Ian and I have been frantically adding up stars to see what we can produce in the way of ribbons. I can make 3 if you count the Defence Medal, which I haven't had the face to put up yet. Ian is as yet bare-breasted he says he's not sure whether or not he's qualified for the Burma, but personally I think he's just being snobbish about it. Presumably you are well into two rows by now.
We had a pretty Donaldsonish sort of leave – no women, wine in great moderation, and you can scarcely imagine us doing much singing, though Ian [deleted] has [/deleted] practically murdered [inserted] me [/inserted] one night for whistling under my breath in his mess. We swam a good bit, and Ian turned salmon pink and my mecrapine yellow went a little darker in shade, and I had a lovely attack of squitters, and beat him hollow at picquet [sic] (though he will probably maintain that he had bad luck.) my opinion of the RAF has sunk considerably since a very nasty-minded Wingco turned me out of their living quarters there, in spite of the fact that they had bags of empty charpoys, and also from seeing the remarkably phoney excuses they seem to get home on. Definitely a sissy service. Too young to know better, I suppose. But otherwise the leave was good.
I believe I owe both of you and your ever-loving a letter; in fact I don't think I've ever thanked you for the [word deleted] for the very worthy Captain Foulenough. (A brow type, of course.) I take it that you will be going back to school again shortly. If
[page break]
I get home in time, I shall come & take you out and buy you some sweets one Sunday. But I'm afraid I shall be too late.
I hope Frances is getting on well with her English catechism; she must have that off pat by the time I get home so we can cracking on the Greek & Latin versions. The Hebrew can well wait. Better start her off on some Elementary Karl Marx, too, just in case. Incidentally I was conning over the christening group recently. Some detailed discussions must obviously be held with the Fairy Godmother. Name like Lavender of [sic] Petunia or something, wasn't it?
Yours,
[underlined] Norman [/underlined]

Dear Mama,
There being absolutely nothing else to do at all, you may get a reasonably long letter from me for once - especially as we are only allowed to write three; the censor will also have a lot of waffle to wade through, but I have a fellow-feeling for him, as I look like being let in for a spot of it myself' I've gazed my fill at the surrounding countryside, as I feel that I may as well do so while there is some countryside to look at. The gulls have already begun to pall; besides, they are much more evil-looking than the ones you watch
[page break]
from the floating-bridge. If we had enough ammunition, they would make excellent revolver practice, but then someone would probably pot & albatross and ruin everything. The ship is “dry” (unless you call ginger ale “wet”), which needless to say has not gone down at all well.
I had a very pleasant train journey; the first thing that happened when I arrived was that a Security Officer rushed me into a canteen & proceeded to hack off your bea[inserted]u[/inserted]tiful green shoulder-flashes with a penknife. I may say that he commented not once but many times on the excellent shewing [sic].
They've just done the dirty on us and called in all mail, so this
[page break]
is not so long as I expected. Will you thank the Aunts very much for putting me up; I'll cable to you when I get somewhere. Till then, lots of love.

Dear Mama,
Well, I've arrived. Masters told Hunt “10 to 7”, & anway [sic] the train didn't [underlined] leave [/underlined] Eastleigh till 7.22, so all was well. I had a seat to London, & a taxi at once; but King's Cross was packed out with rookies going everywhere (all the courses start together) the 9.50 was full up when I arrived, & the 10.0 was soon after, but I managed to find a nook in the corridor, and I reached here only an hour after I expected. And lo & behold, I'm in the same lines as I was in August, & a mere 200yds from the hut I was in then; so I know my way about, & a fair amount of the routine. They say
[inserted down side of page] Don't spread this address round yet – I have not discovered my Army number. [/inserted]
[page break]
its a general place, but it seems pretty permeated with Signals; but I suppose that's natural being in the middle of a Signals battalion.
We've had a meal, & made our beds – we've got spring (?) double-decker bedsteads (I got the top deck, thank heavens) and we're sleeping 32 (instead of 16) to a hut, so we shall not be lonely. I've already filled in two forms about the ration books, so you might buzz them along as soon as poss. My bed is next to the Corporal's, which, while it undoubtedly gives me the protection and comfort of his care, also gives me all the odd jobs – I had 3 in the first quarter of an hour. However he's a very pleasant fellow indeed. We are waiting to be officially received at the moment.
Any news of Franc[underlined]i[/underlined]s?
Love,

Oriel College,
Oxford.
Dear Mama,
Many thanks for your letter. I imagined that you would probably be in a banned area, but if you are I have no doubt that there will be no difficulty about a pass. I don't really recommend Oxford for a holiday – the place is absolutely packed out.
I went over to Marlow on Saturday, for a dance that the Whalleys gave, and had the greatest weekend that I've had for years; Gwen confessed that she had blued almost all her available points on it, but she did it in truly marvellous style. We were even mad enough to bathe in the river by moonlight afterwards, & we spent most of
[page break]
Sunday morning rowing up the river. I also went and called on the RAF station, all my old friends (incl, I'm glad to say, Ted Beard) are now CSMs or staff- [word deleted] sergeants not that they look a penny the more imposing for it! One of them [deleted] off [/deleted] is going to get his commission without any WOSB, which has caused a little ill-feeling, I think, especially since another has just failed is WOSB. However I received the good news that I am going on leave at the end of this course (9 days, beginning [deleted] at [/deleted] on Sept 1st – I'll probably be home on the evening of Tues aug 31st) and that I am returning to [word deleted] my old job with paid acting rank of [word deleted] full lieutenant. How long I stay there depends on present chit-chat in Quebec, I imagine.
Will you thank Ian very much for the letter & registration slip? I didn't get
[page break]
over to see Molly while she was here, as Lathbury Rd is 3 or 4 miles away & I happened to be motor-cycling both evenings. However, I hope to get over there next Sunday afternoon – Pangbourne, I mean. I simply have not time to go and see Lettice, I'm afraid. I think I'm fairly happy on the rough & on the water-splash, now, but [word deleted] night-riding is still distinctly unpleasant, especially when the tail lamp in front of you goes out, and I am consistently unable to start the machine again once she has stalled. However, at worst it's a quick death, and at best it is comparable to horse -riding as a sport.
