Nr 5 POLSKA WALCZĄCA – ŻOŁNIERZ POLSKI NA OBCZYZNIE
Z życia obozów [underlined]
Dom lotnika w X.
troche drzewa odsłaniając przestrzeń pustą i wysmukły zamek swój sen o chwale o rodu Rattray. Stworzyła go potrzeba wojenna.
Ród Rattrey tradycje swe rycerskie w trzech wyprawach krzyzowych [obscured]
potężny Earl of Athol zazdrosnym okiem na sąsiadów swoich patrzący.
Stara nienawić do rodu Athol wygasała powoli.
W duźej bibliotece zamkowej można znaleść stare książki łacińskie, angielskie i francuskie, rzadką historię kultury z XVIII stulecia oraz atlas z 1772 roku, gdzie polscy rekonwalescenci odnajdują dokładną precyzyjną mape Polski.
No 5 FIGHTING POLAND – POLISH SOLDIER IN EXILE
From camp life [underline]
Airmen’s house in X.
If anyone is sceptical, doesn’t believe in ghosts, doesn’t value traditions and ancient legends then let them visit X. You drive an admittedly crazy 6 miles from the nearest town by taxi, remembering the first trials of the combustion engine, but it is worth it for the road and the view!
A narrow serpentine climbs up a steep hill covered in dense forest. At the bottom, the silver meanders of a river weave and bite into the cliff [obscured]
the trees clear to show a bleak landscape and the slender castle with its dream of the glory of the family Rattray. It was not the beauty of nature, that dictated the choice of this romantic, wild corner as the location for this castle. It was the demands of battle.
The Rattrey family proved its knights’ traditions in three crusades [obscured]
the mighty Earl of Athol looked with jealous eyes at his neighbours. Patrick Rattrey fell at the hands of thugs sent by his neighbour, and two beautiful daughters Elizabeth and Gryzelda were snatched by him. But in 1520 a mighty fortress rose from the cliff which was to protect the sovereign rights of the Rattreys.
For 400 years the Rattreys fought against the Athols and in the meantime they allied themselves with the mighty Montrose party, and in defending the rights of the Stuarts to the throne they fought against the English. Cromwell’s army plundered and destroyed the castle and threw the old servant Andrew into the river for not wanting to reveal the whereabouts of his master who was hidden in the woods. The years passed and the Rattrey family took on the name of Clerk Rattrey from a new Lord who had joined the family through marriage. X was the headquarters and inspiration for Walter Scott in 1793, The old hatred towards the Athol family gradually faded.
The last member of the Clerk Rattrey family was a general who fought in Sewastapol and died in 1910. From that moment the inheritance passed to another branch of the family. At that moment [obscured]
to the pilots to whom the castle was gifted as [obscured] spending holidays and [obscured] as the high and proud [obscured] heavenly tracts [obscured] so as to win [obscured] the Rattreys were not embarrassed [obscured] newcomers who [obscured] call them to propellors and motors.
In the big library I the castle one can find old books in Latin, English and French, rare cultural histories of the XVIII century as well as an atlas from 1772 where the resting pilots can discover an accurate and precise map of Poland The castle is extensive, full of winding corridors. Looking down from dark backgrounds are the almost living faces of former lords of the castle. But they look down kindly.
Nothing stops the relaxation of the tens of young airmen who are spending a short holiday here. They sleep two or three in rooms that are light and sunny and look out onto the beautiful landscape of wild mountains and wooded gorges. The ancient castle has been renovated [obscured]
of sausages and Polish hams for Christmas, and chickens have also been reared. From the forest the lads have gathered mushrooms and berries, and for all this is paid what is called palatable sums which are in accordance with the air force rank, and the amount they are allocated for subsistence.
I will share another secret. In democratic England, where they still tightly observe the differences between ranks of officers and soldiers, a rest home has been created for both officers and privates. In this house everyone, regardless of rank are treated equally, they play together and rest together and there are no conflicts due to this. Its not often that you find a young sergeant teaching a grey-haired colonel how to play bridge and this doesn’t spoil [obscured].
