Dear Mrs. Wareing,
We have had your two letters of October 22nd and October 24th and are delighted to hear the good news that you have had a message broadcast to you from your husband, Squadron Leader Robert Wareing, D.F.C., N0. 86325.
We have consulted our Broadcasting Section and are able to verify this message. As soon as official confirmation is received that your husband is a prisoner, we shall pass over all correspondence concerning him to our Prisoners of War Department at St. James’s Palace, and they will then tell you how you should write to him and how parcels can be sent.
We are indeed delighted to think that your anxiety has ended with such good news.
Yours sincerely,

Dear Mrs. Evans,
We deeply regret that you will by now have heard from the Air Ministry that your son Flying Officer A. Evans, No. 157299 has been posted “Missing, believed Killed in Action” and we should like to offer you the deep sympathy of all in this Department.
This action has been found necessary in view of the following grievous report which was contained in an official German statement, and has been received from the International Red Cross Committee at Geneva.
We are told that on the 25th. March, 1944 your son Flying Officer G.F. Garland, Sergeant K.V. Miller, Sergeant M.E. Burnard, Flight Sergeant P.J. Hatton and A/Flight Sergeant A.G. Terrell lost their lives, also one member of the crew whose name had not yet been ascertained by the enemy.
Further enquiries are being made about Flying Officer Evans’ [deleted] s [/deleted] death and place of burial, and you will be notified without delay when any information reaches the Air Ministry or ourselves. Many answers are being received to enquiries of this kind, but we are afraid that they often take several months to come through.
With again our deepest sympathy,
Yours sincerely,

We are sorry to tell you that so far no information has been received about him, but all possible enquiries are being made. Any news coming from the International Red Cross Committee at Geneva or from any other source, will be passed to you immediately. If, however, you are the registered next-of-kin, your first notification will come from the Air Ministry.
May we say how much we sympathise with you in your anxiety.
Yours sincerely,
[signed] Margaret Ampthill
Chairman.

Dear Mr. Madgett,
We feel you should know of some very grave news which has reached us about a member of the crew in which your son, Pilot Officer H.R. Madgett, No.147519, was serving when he was posted as Missing.
A telegram from the International Red Cross Committee at Geneva states that the body of Pilot Officer Lewis was recovered on the shore, but no locality was given. We fear that this report must indicate that the disaster to the aircraft most probably occurred over the sea.
We are continuing to make enquiries on your behalf, and need hardly say that should any news come through about your son, it will be at once communicated to you.
Please accept our very sincere sympathy in this period of prolonged anxiety and suspense.
Yours sincerely,
Margaret Ampthill

Dear Mrs. Newton,
We have now received a reply from Sergeant Louch to the enquiry we sent him after Sergeant R. C. Smith, 742572, had been posted as missing, believed killed in action.
We deeply regret that Sergeant Louch confirms the original report of the death of your husband’s friend. He tells us that Sergeant Smith remained in the burning aircraft until the members of his crew had baled out, and that it was as a result of his unselfish thought for his companions that he so gallantly met his death.
I am afraid that we still have no news to send you of your husband, Sergeant J. L. Newton, No. 742570, and wish we could do more to help you at this anxious time.
Yours sincerely,

Dear Mrs. Newton,
Since you telephoned yesterday, making a further enquiry for your husband, Sergeant J.L. Newton, No. 742570, and saying that you thought two members of his crew had been taken prisoner, we have been in communication with the Air Ministry on your behalf.
It seems that one of the crew may indeed be a prisoner, but at present we are asked to make no effort to get into touch with him. We can, I am afraid, only continue with the enquiries we are making for your husband and hope that it may not be very long before some information becomes available.
I did telephone yesterday afternoon, as you suggested, but am writing because I could get no reply.
Yours sincerely,
Margaret Ampthill.

Dear Mrs. Newton,
Since I spoke to you on the telephone this morning, I have telephoned to the Air Ministry, asking them if they think it is wise for us to endeavour to get into touch with Sergeants Porteous and Burrell to ask them if they have news to give of your husband, Sergeant J.L.Newton, No. 742570.
We are so very sorry that they strongly advise us not to do so. We have also been asked by the Foreign Office to avoid communication with men in unoccupied France, because by writing to them and asking them questions, we may jeopardise their position and their chances of escape.
I realise what a great disappointment this will be to you, but feel sure that you will accept the Air Ministry's decision and know that if at any time it is possible for us to communicate with these men on your behalf, we will most certainly do so.
Yours sincerely,

Dear Mrs. Newton,
I am writing concerning our telephone conversation on August 13th when you made an enquiry for your husband, Sergeant J.L. Newton, No. 742570, and for his friend, Sergeant R.C. Smith, No. 742572.
I am so sorry that we have at present no news of your husband, but, as I told you, we are making all possible enquiries and you will be notified without delay if we succeed in obtaining any information.
Sergeant R.C. Smith has, unhappily, now been posted by the Air Ministry as “missing, believed killed in action. The grievous news that he lost his life was sent by the International Red Cross Committee at Geneva.
Sergeant Louch, a member of the crew, has been reported as a prisoner of war, and we have written to him asking if he can give us any information about what happened at the time. We have also sent a special enquiry to the International Red Cross Committee, asking them to obtain what details they can about the place where Sergeant Smith is buried.
It is likely to be several months before we receive replies to these enquiries, but we will write to you again when we do so.
I am so sorry to have to send you this distressing news.
Yours sincerely, [signature] Margaret Ampthill. Chairman. pp [indecipherable letter] . m.

Dear Mr. Adder,
We deeply regret that you will by now have heard from the Air Ministry that your son, Pilot Officer M. Adder, No. 175073, has been posted “Missing, believed Killed in Action”, and we should like to offer you the deep sympathy of all in this Department.
The report that your son, Sergeant G. Clark, and Flying Officer J.R. Berrington, lost their lives on the 15th March, 1944, was sent to the International Red Cross Committee at Geneva in an official German statement. The further information was included that Flying Officer T.H. Fynn was taken prisoner.
Further enquiries are being made about Pilot Officer Adder’s death and place of burial, and you will be notified without delay when any information reaches the Air Ministry or ourselves.
We shall also endeavour to get into touch with the airman taken prisoner, and should we succeed in obtaining any helpful additional news from this source we shall of course communicate with you again.
P.T.O.

Many answers are being received to enquiries of this kind, but we are afraid that they often take several months to come through.
With again our deepest sympathy.
Yours sincerely,
Margaret Ampthill.
Chairman.
A. Adder, Esq.,
153, Albert Avenue,
Hull.
P.S. We referred to your son as Pilot Officer and used the number 175073 because we have been notified by the Air Ministry of his promotion and of the new Royal Air Force number which is always allotted with commissioned rank.

Dear Miss Roberts,
Your letter of 17th December, 1944 in which you make an enquiry for your friend, Sergeant J. McCormick No. 639959 Royal Air Force, has been passed to us by the Prisoner of War Department at St. James’s Palace.
We have received some information about this airman, and as it is of a very grave nature we fear it will come as a great shock to you.
We deeply regret to tell you that Sergeant McCormick has been posted by the Air Ministry as Missing be-lieved Killed in Action. The report that he lost his life on the 4th April, 1943 and was laid to rest in the Ceme-tery at Eindhoven-Woensel, Holland, was sent to the International Red Cross Committee at Geneva in an official German statement.
We are indeed sorry to have to send you the sad news contained in this letter, and ask you to accept our most sincere sympathy in the loss of your friend.
Yours sincerely,
Margaret Ampthill

Dear Mr. and Mrs. Davis,

This action has been found necessary in view of the following grievous report which was contained in an official German statement and has been received from the International Red Cross Committee at Geneva.
We are told that on the 3rd August 1944 your son and four other members of the crew lost their lives. The information also included that Pilot Officer Wagner was captured. The remaining member is known to be safe.
We are most grieved that your great anxiety should only end with such sad news.
