250 items. The collection concerns Pilot Officer Hedley Madgett DFM (1922 - 1943, 147519, 1330340 Royal Air Force), a pilot with 61 Squadron. He was killed 18 August 1943 on the last operation of his tour from RAF Syerston to Peenemünde. The collection consists of letters, postcards and telegrams to his parents while he was training in the United Kingdom and Canada. In addition the collection contains memorabilia, documents from the Air Training Corps, artwork, a railway map, diaries, medals as well as his logbook, photographs of people, places and aircraft. If it has been sent off I shall be obliged if you will kindly furnish me with the date & route so that I can take up with the Railway Co.

On the 18th August 1943 we received a letter from the Wing Commander of No 61 Squadron at Syerston advising that my Son was missing [deleted] [indecipherable word] [/deleted] after air operation on August 17/18, also a covering letter dated August 19th from which we learnt that he had been awarded the D.F.M.
Up to now [deleted] we [/deleted] I have not heard anything further regarding his decoration. Naturally I shall be very pleased to receive it [inserted] on his behalf [/inserted] and would be glad if you could inform me when I may expect to receive it.

Notes that they received a letter from Wing Commander 61 Squadron at Syerston that their son was missing after air operation on 17/18 August 1943. They also received a letter on 9 August of Hedley's award of a Distinguished Flying Medal. They have heard nothing further regarding the decoration and would be proud to receive it on his behalf.

250 items. The collection concerns Pilot Officer Hedley Madgett DFM (1922 - 1943, 147519, 1330340 Royal Air Force), a pilot with 61 Squadron. He was killed 18 August 1943 on the last operation of his tour from RAF Syerston to Peenemünde. The collection consists of letters, postcards and telegrams to his parents while he was training in the United Kingdom and Canada. In addition the collection contains memorabilia, documents from the Air Training Corps, artwork, a railway map, diaries, medals as well as his logbook, photographs of people, places and aircraft. Sir,
In reply to your letter of 11th May, I am directed to inform you that should you so desire arrangements will be made for you as the recorded next of kin to attend at Buckingham Palaceto receive the Distinguished Flying Medal awarded to the late Pilot Officer Headley R. Madgett from His Majesty The King. It is impossible at this stage to give any indication of the date of the ceremony you would be required to attend but reasonable notice would be given. One other person, a blood relative of the deceased officer would be allowed to attend with you.
If for any reason you should not wish to attend, the decoration would be forwarded to you by post.
Please be good enough to indicate your wishes as soon as convenient.

With reference to your letter of the 22nd inst. A495700/43/S.10a I beg to advise that my Wife and myself wiah to attend at Buckingham Palace to receive from His Majesty the King the Distinguished Flying Medal awarded to our son the late Headley R. Madgett.
I not that you will advise me in due course of the date of the Ceremony.
