[censored] you’ve been very worried of recent weeks, about your safety from the new weapon. I know you’re a long way out of London but I’ve no idea how far North these things travel. I hope that if your area has been within the danger zone, you have “hopped it” to a more salubrious spot. Although we’ve only been here a week or two, I shan’t be sorry to leave. The camp is devoid of many of the rough comforts & conveniences which we had previously regarded as minimum necessities. However we cope just because we must. I wonder if you’ve been able to take Frances for a holiday this year. It’s years since I heard from you. Fondest love John.

[underlined] STALAG LUFT III [/underlined]
30th July 1944
Darling Ursula: We are slowly getting used to the new camp. Its advantages are twofold firstly the view of the surrounding countryside which [inserted] is [/inserted] the best I’ve struck yet & secondly the privilege of being able to roam at will anywhere in the large camp instead of as heretofore, being coupled up in small compounds. The disadvantages are overcrowding, crude & limited toilet facilities & the incomplete state of the camp – eg we have no lights or facilities for cooking Red X food. However – it being summer we cope without much bother. I have a place in which to practice which is about the only thing I look for in a camp nowadays. Needless to say we have had no mail nor parcels since coming here nor do we really expect them – although I’d give anything for a few letters from my beloved wife – from whom I have had nothing for 2 months. I have met an Army Sgt who was with Leslie until Feb of this year & know him very well. His name is Jeans & he seemed to think quite a lot of Leslie. Jeans has been a POW since Feb & hasn’t had a parcel yet but as I had to leave all my spare kit behind at Luft VI I have been able to help him out only to the extent of some toothpaste. I’m keeping very fit but don’t think I have the stamina that I once had – any prolonged effort tires me & I’m usually quite exhausted after a day in which I’ve managed to do a fair amount of fiddling. Amongst the things I refused to leave at Luft VI were all the photos of you & F & all your letters – both of which provide me with refreshment when I feel in the need. I expect my mail to you will be suffering the same fate as yours to me but I shall continue writing in the hope that something may reach you. Doubtless youve [sic] being worrying about my fate during these momentous months in the East just as I’ve been worrying about yours since the menace of the new weapon reared its ugly head. Would that we could interchange telegrams to let each other know that all was well. Times must be exciting at home these days. I wonder if Peter is satisfied with the invasion – I remember him clamouring for one years ago. I expect Frances to be quite a big girl now. When are you going to send her to school? Give her my love & a big kiss. Keep well. dearest, Ever yrs
John

2nd July 19.44
Darling Ursula: The past week has been an outstanding one for me because of the arrival after an interval of a year of a personal parcel. It was the Jan one & was in excellent condition. I am afraid that I’ve given up as lost those sent in July & Oct of last year. Its most unfortunate especially as the former did get to Luft III but I, of course, am powerless to do anything about them. The big item in this most welcome parcel is the shoes which fit me exactly & are a splendid pair. I’m afraid they must have set your finances back a bit. I have removed the partially worn out rubber soles & heels from what was left of my former pair & am having them nailed on to the new ones. The abundant consignment of chocolate was most acceptable although having been closeted with a bar or two of soap for so many months some of choc had a slightly soapy flavour. However it isn’t serious & the choc will serve the dual purpose of cleaning the teeth at the same enchanting the palate. I wonder how many more parcels you’ll send me & how many of them Ill [sic] receive. I’m still getting occasional cig & tobacco parcels from the Wardens. They have been very kind to me, although I’m not very fond of the tobacco they send but hesitate to ask for a change for fear of causing offence. My attempt at duet playing was abruptly terminated after only a week or two’s [inserted] [indecipherable word [/inserted] [indecipherable word] the loss through fire of our theatre. The bands etc. which used to rehearse there now do so in my former practice room – the spud cellar. The weather being good I spend my days in the incinerator which has room only for one. Last month was, for mail, the poorest on record. I had only 1 from you & I have schooled myself to expecting very little from now onwards. Have been reading a book on Design which has clarified a few of my ideas on domestic furnishings & fittings. I’m very keen of having a really well & tastefully lit house (amongst other things) & only hope that our pocket will be able to provide the things I have in mind. I’m extremely keen to have, even if in the distant future, a house built to measure which could incorporate all my ideas. In fact I’m bursting with ideas in several directions but doubt if I’ll realise any. Hope you & daughter are well. I’m so fond of you both
John

Darling Ursula: I was overjoyed yesterday to have yours of 26th March – in sequence. For one thing I hadn’t heard from you for over a month & secondly by way of reaction from all the good news of the last weeks I was in a very depressed state. Your letter restored my good spirits as does everything that comes from you. Unhappily I still await my missing parcels (clothing) A year has now elapsed since I last had one. Not many go astray. I have just been singularly unlucky. Had some cigs today from Ray Cowdry, please thank him. Many thanks for sending off more music which I shall be delighted receive as well as your parents gift of C.G.B. Please thank them too. Thanks for sending details of household exs. I’m a bit out of touch with monetary affairs nowadays & I can only echo your hope that we’ll be able to manage things so excellently in every way that I intend being everything to you for ever, sending you out to work while I stay at home & looking after Frances. Incidentally, I loved your description of her on that sunny March morning. I wish I could have been with you. I am as fit as ever – a little tired perhaps since I’ve been working harder than ever at my fiddle – over 43 hours last week. Practice conditions are worse than ever since the loss of our theatre. Bands & choirs now practice in the spud room where I spent most of the winter but as the weather has been good I have spent the major part of each day in the incinerator. The latter has been a great success as a practice room for I get absolutely no competition there. The only snag is the sneers & gibes of the rest of the camp by whom serious doubts are cast upon my sanity. I hope they are wrong but I sometimes wonder because derangement is unfortunately not unknown here. [censored sentences] I wish I could forsee [sic] the events of the next 6 months. Sometimes I even visualise liberation – but not often. I hope youre [sic] well darling & looking as lovely as ever. Kiss Frances
John

11th June 1944
My Beloved Ursula: Unhappily I am still without mail from you & am fearing that I’ll have to go on very short rations of it in the future. The stirring news of the past weeks has thrilled us all but doubtless it will lead to further mail delays. However I’ll willingly go without your letters if our reunion is hastened by the same cause. Optimism is rife as a result of our wonderful invasion but I’m not indulging to any great extent. If I could be home in time to celebrate your birthday I’ll be surprised & that is the most I hope for. I hope you and darling daughter will treat yourselves to a holiday this year. [underlined] You [/underlined] will certainly need one after all your stupendous efforts of the past year. I’m keeping as fit as ever & devoting all my energies to the fiddle. Since my capture I have started several varied intellectual pursuits, but all have petered out after a few months with the sole exception of the violin, my interest in which grows steadily stronger. With the warmer weather I’m able to practice a lot more & it now occupies all my available time every day. I do nothing else nowadays, not even reading. I’ve started playing duets with another fellow & for want of proper material he & I play 1st & 2nd violin parts respectively of a few Mozart quartets for strings. Mind you, I don’t play well. I scratch badly & am rarely in time & usually a bar or two behind or ahead but its good fun to see who gets to the end first. Seriously though, I am improving but it’s a very difficult instrument to master & I’ve a long way to go yet. I wonder if I’ll be able to continue with it after my release If you or H.M. King will allow me time, I intend trying. It has been & is a real blessing to me here & if I believed in God, I’d thank him for it. I’ve been in this camp for a year now & dislike it more as time goes on. We’re growing daily in numbers but not in lebensraum. How I hate men in the mass! You know, I haven’t spoken to a woman for over 2 yrs nor seen one since the journey here. Nevertheless there is only 1 woman I want to see or speak to & I love her & long for her as fervently as ever I did. I wish I had some fresh photos of her & her strapping daughter. I hope you are keeping well, dearest & that the P.G’s have continued to be satisfactory. Fondest love
John

Unfortunately no mail from you to acknowledge but I have another from your Mother. I enjoy hearing from her. Would you tell her so & thank her? Could you tactfully make it known amongst my friends & relations that when writing to me concerning an anniversary of some sort (eg birthday) they need not express the hope or expectation that I shall be home before the next. I have been reading such expressions for long enough now to be sick of them & to distrust them entirely. Older POW’s have been wished the same thing for years now - & are they home? I’m very fit nowadays - working like a Trojan at my fiddle. It would appear now, though, that I shan’t emulate Nero. Kiss my big daughter for me. Love to both
John.

Once again no mail. Your precious letters have for some time been arriving in bundles but only once a month. Have had a few small anonymous tobacco parcels recently. Everybody is most kind but I wish I knew who they were. Am still practising violently – in my incinerator. In the opinion of the camp I’m “round the bend” (or mad) a common disease here. However I’m firmly convinced that I’m sane enough despite my taste for curious practice rooms. We’re getting [censored words] nowadays & all anxiously awaiting action somewhere. Are you hearing us? Hope you & darling daughter will have a holiday this year. Am a bit anxious about Leslie these days. Hope he is safe. Love to both John.

14th MAY 1944.
My Dearest Wife; Yesterday was a gala day for me 12 letters – 6 of them from you dated at regular weekly intervals from 6th Feb to 12th March. What a treasure you are – each letter is long & full of interest for me wheras [sic] everyone else gets only those horrible & very limited letterforms. Thank you, darling, for writing at such length & so regularly. I hadn’t heard from you for over 5 weeks. I wish they’d come as regularly as they are dispatched. Now to try to answer them. Horrified to hear of Frances’ rupture & earnestly hope she soon recovers – let me know. ASVs tobacco has started arriving again so don’t worry on that score. If you can, I would suggest having the piano renovated while we have the cash. Once again I stand amazed at your terrific energy & purposefulness – this time at your P.Gs. you certainly do your bit to help others. E Ms must be a bit of a worry though & while seeing the disadvantages I favour the Mother & Babe proposition. I hope you get suitable people though. I know how I would have appreciated someone like you in April 1941. I still go faint at the recollection of my worried state then. The cash aspect is pleasing – but don’t, I implore you undertake this venture for that alone & please spare yourself – don’t overdo things. Very sorry to hear of Ba’s trouble – give me any news of the friend. You talk of Frances saying her prayers. I wonder if you have my letter telling you about my beliefs – which I haven’t changed – I hope to convert you someday but what about Frances if we two don’t agree? Still no sign of clothing parcels – my last was sent off in March 194[underlined]3[/underlined]. Let Red X know, would you. The June ’43 one got to Luft III but failed to make the grade here. The skates arrived here 2 days ago – MINUS BOOTS. Delighted to hear that you find other peoples husbands insipid & hope that also applies to their brothers, sons & other male relations. I particularly want you all to myself. How much I want you & yearn for you is beyond my power to tell. I was merely trying to be sarcastic when I hinted that I might never be free. I try hard to keep gloom out of my letters to you. Once, I had to erase an outburst on the subject of Peter which filled a fair portion of a letter. Frank P. is now in his 5th year of incarceration – I feel very sorry for him – he rarely hears from Vera (once so far this year) & gets no tobacco from anyone. Love to both as always
John

Over a month since I had any mail from you. Am longing for some daily. Had 2 small tobacco parcels from Miss Hoare (bless her) but no other for months. Frank P never gets any so I have pooled all my present stock & future receipts with him and another unfortunate. Shocking weather here – rain, mud & wind. Had a game of football today – my first exercise since last autumn! What little landscape that can be seen from here is as bleak as in mid winter. No leaves on the trees yet & the fields bare. The mail situation is shocking nowadays – Its impossible to keep up any correspondence with you, yet there’s so much I want to know about you & the house. My patience is being sorely tried! April was the worst month ever for letters. Fondest love to both. Keep well
John.

Datum 30th APRIL 1944
Nothing fromm you since the beginning of the month. How I miss it! Very cold here – I have felt colder all this month than during the whole winter – there’s no sign of spring yet either. Yesterday was my seven hundredth day of confinement. How many more I wonder? Have received 10 books from Sweden. Sender unknown. Unfortunately all were thrillers or Western Stories so I’ve handed them to the library. Still no sign of your parcels of last June, Sept or Dec & no tobacco or cigs for months. My fiddle has been repaired by a chap here & is very good now. Wish I could do it justice. I wonder if you realise how incredibly keen I am to master [underlined] solely [/underlined] for the purpose of playing with you. “Pretty – pretty” solos don’t interest me a bit. Hope you’re both thriving. Kiss Frances for me
John.

STALAG LUFT III
LAGER “A”
23rd April 1944
Darling Ursula: Nearly three weeks since your last letter & no prospect of the next for sometime, [sic] according to an official statement. The mail situation has steadily worsened during the past year. Three months is the average time taken now compared with 6 weeks. 30th Jan is the date of your last letter & I’m thirsting for news of you, the house & Frances. Incidentally I havent [sic] heard from Ba since Oct 1942. I enjoy her letters – please ask her why I have fallen from Grace. Have received another 4 books from Stockholm (sender unknown). They weren’t worth reading so I gave them to the library. I’m still sitting for a few hours in the incinerator – it is still very cold & I’ve developed chilblains & another wretched cold but thanks to that excellent treatment of the M.O. my senses are preserved intact. I shan’t touch the Argotone you so kindly sent until this other treatment fails. Its success so far is 100% & it has made a great difference to my life here. I’d love some more photos of you, Frances & the house, I often look through those I have & offer a prayer of thanks to Ba without whom I would not have them. You have been in C St G for a few months now I wonder if you still like the house & neighbourhood & if you are alright for money or suffering from financial stringency. Is there any chance of action from Britain this decade? (apart from R.N. & R.A.F.) The stories of strikes (even apprentices – God Allmighty [sic]!!) & stagnation in Italy make dismal reading while old Jo goes steadily marching on. “The Kriegies friend” we call him. Some of my 4 year colleagues are almost losing faith – one or two their reason, also, I believe. Frank P has now had 1 letter from his wife in over six months. Winter is now definitely over but spring is very timid. What little grass can be seen from within the wire has turned green but there are no other signs of vernal awakening. Have you had time to send cards of greeting to my revered male parent & my three sisters all of whose birthdays occur at this season? How the hell did Irenes old man get out of the service? Could he give me any hints? Has Bunty’s third turned up yet? What brand? I think of you incessantly, dearest, & yearn so ardently. Keep well & give Frances a kiss for me
Love John

Datum 16th APRIL 1944
No mail from you to answer. Have heard from Eileen Johnson & Fred Don. Could you thank both especially the later for the several he has sent (alone of all my friends). Hope you were able to give Frances a joyful anniversary. Winter has now gone, thank goodness, but signs of spring still wanting. Am extremely thankful to have survived the winter in such good health – especially considering how I pass my time. My practice in the incinerator is a great success – I get almost absolute solitude (dirt & cold also) for about 6 hours per day but also I make no progress. [censored] roceeds here according to flour. Has everyone gone to sleep in England? We wait patiently but old Jo seems to be the only active body nowadays. Please give someone a shake.
Love John.

STALAG LUFT III 9th April 1944
[censored word]
My Darling Ursula, yesterday was a happy one for me bringing your letters of 16th, 23rd & 30th Jan. Glad youre [sic] having the house repainted. Delighted to hear your good opinion of the house compared with High House. Horswells phone No OK now. Quite agree with your remarks re Ann’s education. Her elder sisters are sentimental illiterates & I’m afraid she will follow suit. Sorry Irene ignores you but don’t let it worry you – merely reciprocate! I don’t think she has any right to be jealous of Bunty at Gable End. Her matrimonial career didn’t start until Bunty had been a year or two there. Thanks for contents of 7th parcel. Hope I get it soon. Haven’t had one since July last. My large stock of cigs is dwindling (not entirely through over consumption). Please don’t imagine I intend doing a thorough audit of your a/cs when I return, asking you to account for every penny. I trust you implicitly, of course & will be only too happy to accept the position as it is when we meet – even if youre [sic] insolvent. I would caution you on two points [circled 1] any personal RAF increased pay which we might have to refund to Touches or pay tax on if not refunded [circled 2] when I come back I shall have to live on the same income & I reckon that my cost as a civilian husband not to be less than £2 per week (Clothes, travelling food etc) Any chance of getting H & C water laid on in the bedrooms (as at Barnet)? If cost is not prohibitive, it is a great institution as I know from experience. The Dutchmen do not help me with Dutch In fact I’ve dropped it temporarily. Weve [sic] drifted very far apart now although we haven’t actually quarrelled. They are not quite the fellows I imagined them to be. I am amused at the artless way you write of the music you’re going to send me. Haydn, Handel & Mozart are far beyond me yet. If only you could hear my puerile scrapings, you’d emphatically agree. I don’t need anything more than I’ve asked for. The excellent studies already here will last me years. My latest venue for practice, an incinerator, is a success although cold & dirty. At least I am isolated & don’t worry others. I [inserted] am [/inserted] still hopeless but persistent & I wont drop the fiddle if it is humanly possible. Hope you get the piano done. The snow is disappearing slowly but winter is most protracted here. Snow & frost in 6 consecutive months. Delighted to hear of Frances’ dancing class Tell me more. I’d like to repeat how much I value the long interesting letters you send so regularly. They give me more real & positive happiness than anything else here. My warmest thanks, dearest. Love to both
John.

Still no mail to answer. It’s a month now since the last. Weather here improving slightly – still a bit of snow lying about & heavy frosts every night. Being at my wits end for room in which to fiddle. I braved the scorn of the camp today & used a brick built dustbin cum incinerator (it wasn’t burning). It was pretty cold but otherwise satisfactory if smelly. Quest for space is a never ending struggle made [censored sentences] are still getting regular supplies of Red X Food despite increased mouths to feed but have suffered 3 cuts in spuds during the winter. However we aren’t on our knees yet. Frank P. has at last heard from Vera. We all wait anxiously but patiently for something to happen soon. Love to both, John

Darling Ursula: No mail to answer, unfortunately. Your letters are taking longer & longer to reach me as time goes on. 3 months is the average nowadays. However, I have 3 packages to acknowledge with gratitude eg 6 Violin “A” strings (will keep me going for some time now) book of 5 Violin pieces (I imagine you to be the anonymous donor. they are just right for my present state of proficiency); 4 bottles of Argotone. You have been really thoughtful and considerate in sending these things another proof of your constant endeavours to help me. I can’t thank you enough. I wish a clothing parcel would turn up. I haven’t had one since early last July. 9 mos ago. we are still in the grip of winter & experiencing more snow than ever before with drifts literally of several feet in height. At the beginning of the month it thawed & the camp eventually dried & drained itself to [inserted] a [/inserted] intolerable condition. Subsequently it became bitterly cold & 2 days ago started snowing in real earnest & is still doing so. In some ways the camp is better than when we arrived. Sanitary conditions are vastly improved & if somewhat crude are at least satisfactory. We also have a small theatre – each show has to be done 13 times to allow all to see it. Internally, we are well organised & every inch of available space used for something or other. The site & climate will never be improved of course, but the worst feature of the present [censored] . I am very fit, still grinding away at the fiddle conditions for the practice on which grow steadily more difficult as overcrowding increases, I think of you & Frances constantly & often lay to picture our reunion. I hope you are well & succeeding in all your labours with house. How I wish I could help. Hope no bombs fall near you. If so, you’d better retire to Devon and keep yourselves intact for me! Frank P still not heard from wife
Love, John

No mail to answer – alas! The camp is drying up a bit after the awful period following the thaw & I have recovered my good health & sense of taste. Since I’ve been a POW my zest for farming has diminished & has been replaced by an absorbing interest in music. Of course I spend hours per day on my fiddle, read a certain amount on the subject & listen to records whenever possible. There are many & varied recordings on the camp. My hope is that you & I can go into the subject seriously when we’re together. It has certainly made a tremendous difference to my existence here & my interest grows instead of flagging as with the other activities which I have from time to time taken up. Fondest love to infant (& you!)

My Darling Wife: Yours of 12th & 19th Dec here – to my great joy. Once again I thoroughly enjoyed all the details of your activities in house & garden & of course was filled with renewed admiration (not that it ever flags, believe you me) Very glad to hear of your profitable 2 day visit to Barnet. I hope you conveyed your gratitude, even if you didn’t feel any. My people like to be thanked. Sorry to hear about the tooth, particularly about the extraction. Hope it wasn’t too painful. Whence came the Cozystove? – a jolly good investment anyway. Now that you are well & truly established & slaving like a black to get things in order I long more & more for my liberation – I’m so confoundedly useless here. Thank goodness the winter nears an end. Although it hasn’t been unbearably cold we’ve had snow in 5 consecutive months (& are still getting it). The real thaw began a short while ago & the camp is in an indescribably [censored words] It really is most unpleasant – just like the entrance to a field which grazes a large herd of cattle. The coming summer promises to be [censored words] Hurry up the end! As to my fiddle, I’m losing the urge. I’m hopeless & conditions are so beastly that I sometimes feel near hysteria when baffled either by inability to cope or by obstacles to my being allowed to play. However I’m just driving myself on not with any hope of succeeding but because of an unwillingness to admit defeat. If ever I get a place for practicing in which I can stand up; have enough room to wield a bow without hitting roof or wall, do not have to put up with obnoxious odours, decaying veg, banging, shouting, ribald comments, bad light, rivals etc etc I shall feel in paradise. God! how I hate this life! However the thought of you is a never failing source of comfort. Hope you & daughter thrive. Fondest love
John

Darling Ursula: Tuesday was a marvellous day for me bringing 4 letters from you 5th & 29th Dec, 2nd & 11th Jan. I read again & again all your details of the home, carefully studying your sketches & generally enjoying the thought of having a home to my name. Delighted to hear of the labour saving & apparently economic system of heating & cooking & glad to know that electrical appliances figure to a certain extent. Of course there are gaps in the letters (non arrivals, I mean, not erasures) but I gather youve [sic] contacted D. Halls for odd items of furniture. Try to get as much from him – let cash be your only bar if rationing can be overcome. You seem to have scrounged a gramophone. If its that old one of my peoples it isn’t much good BUT my wireless has a couple of “plug ‘oles” for a pick up. Would you therefore try to acquire either [circled 1] an electric “Pick Up” arm or [circled 2] Complete electric unit ie motor turntable & Pick up arm. If you get the former it merely replaces sound box & arm of gramophone & we continue to wind up the clockwork motor for each record but get sound from wireless, if latter we take clockwork motor & turntable out of gram & replace with electric unit. They are relatively inexpensive, especially former so its worth while getting a good quality one. The reproduction will be incomparably better than that of the old machine. I know these devices wont be plentiful but A.S.T. or Freeman (through one of GATs connections) or Peter might be able to get one. Let GATS handle Property tax. Hope Frances enjoys dancing lessons. Good idea anyway. This month has been our coldest yet but not exactly unbearable. I’m not feeling too bright my last cold lingers, taste of course, gone & nose bleeding a lot. However I’ve escaped the [censored words] In my room every single man had had either flu or bad cold. [censored sentence] We long for the end of this wretched winter & hope for big events in the spring & summer. Hope you & Frances got rid of your colds & have kept fit since. Fondest love to both. John

My Dear Frances: I am afraid that it is already too late for this card to arrive before your birthday but at least it will tell you that I haven’t forgotten all about you. I hope you had lots of presents & that among them was one from me. Perhaps I shall be home in time for your next birthday & able to give you something myself. Mother writes a lot to me about you & I’m so pleased & proud to know what a good little girl you are. While I am away, I hope you will look after Mother well & see that she behaves herself always and is a credit to her daughter – she wants some looking after, I know but you must do your best. Have a happy birthday, Frances. Love

13th February 1944
Darling Ursula: I was absolutely delighted to have yours of 28th Nov (series complete to that) written on the day you moved into our new home. I am tremendously excited at the thought that at last we have a place that we can call our own (even if we do owe 90% of the purchase price) & I am very very [sic] keen to know all about it, its size, location, rooms & their layout, neighbours, garden etc. etc. Please, in due course, send me every possible detail of it & of all your heroic labours in fitting it up & furnishing it. I don’t want you to think that I am calmly taking for granted your courage & energy in embarking single-handed on such a major project so vital to our future. On the contrary I gaze from afar in amazement at your manifold activities & am deeply (I repeat – deeply) grateful for all you do I thirst for news of progress. This is the first letter I’ve addressed to the house because I did not know, before, if you had actually moved in. My warmest thanks, darling, for everything & best wishes for success in all you do. Home creating nowadays must be like making bricks without straw. Would you repeat the Horswells phone No. It wasn’t censored but some remarks re Jack BP on the reverse side were obliterated & the number along with them. Frank Pepper hasn’t heard from his wife, for over 4 months & is very depressed. Could you find out from Olga if there’s any particular reason for the silence. I’m certainly luckier than he in having you for a wife. Yours of 7th Nov also here. I hope your gloomy forecast re my Sept parcel proves wrong. It would be hard to lose 2 consecutive parcels. I’m running short of boot polish & ran out of toothpaste weeks ago. What is the final outcome of the piano business? Had a letter with xmas wishes from Joan Moore Coulson – could you thank her please . There’s [censored words] I had a rotten cold recently & spent 1 day in bed which prove sufficient to prevent developments & I’m very fit again. Since doing my nose as M.O. directed my colds vanish quickly instead of lingering almost indefinitely
Love John.

Only 2 letters from you so far this year both of which were [inserted] of [/inserted] earlier date than I had before xmas – so I still don’t know anything of your location or mode of living. I have developed another cold (my third this winter) but so far has escaped flu which is prevalent (very). Otherwise I’m very fit but longing for you more than ever. For a change the camp is moderately dry underfoot & its possible to move about with[inserted]out[/inserted] discomfort. Had an excellent food parcel from Grunfelds Swiss friends, sent this time from Portugal. They are very, very kind. I’ll try to send a card of thanks if I can share one. Thanks to the generous cig & tobacco parcels (mentioned before) I have been able to help some room mates who are very short. Love both

Almost a blank year so far for mail from you. Only 1 letter & so I’m still in the dark as to where you are living & how you are coping. Having no winter at all here. The bitter cold was short lived & we’re back again to fearful slush. I’ve managed to get a new pair of boots out of the Red X store [censored words] We have here the worst climate imaginable but I’m extremely fit strangely enough although I have precisely no exercise. Ever since weve [sic] been here the Red X food store has been well stocked & the usual issue is 1 British & 1 Canadian parcel on alternate weeks. We thus get, I consider, ample sugar, tea, a little cheese, jam, prunes, and other delicacies. What I miss is bulky food eg bread & veg. I’m certainly [censored words] I love you so much, dear
John.

My Darling,
Yours of 14th Nov here. Series complete to 22nd November. Waiting (always waiting!) eagerly to hear if you have been living at Chalfont & details of everything you’ve done. So far winter has not been severe but most unpleasant on account of damp. Some months ago I saw British M.O. re my nose & he suggested “washing it out” daily with quantities of solution of boracic & salt. It has worked wonders, I get rid of a lot of nasty coloured mucous every day & my tasting although not always in working order is very much better. My only exercise is an occasional circuit of the compound but I feel very fit despite the ever present torture of the climate. Hope you are well, dearest, & not working too hard. Always yours John

My darling. No mail from you alas, since last year. I eagerly & anxiously awaiting news of progress with the house. I don’t know if I shall ever be free again but should I return I’d like to give Francis a grand present so that she will be able to associate my appearance with something pleasant & possibly get to love me on the strength of it. If & when my day of liberation approaches, would you search around for something she would really treasure, buy it & keep it [inserted] hidden [/inserted] until I come on the scene. The weather here continues atrociously, lots of Slush, fair amount of cold – most unpleasant. I’m keeping very fit though. Had a cig parcel from ‘The Wardens’ (bless them) my first for about 4 months I hope you are well & Frances too

Darling Ursula: Your letter of 22nd Nov here. ([censored word] as one still waiting) Hearty congratulations on your energetic procedure in getting possession of house & tackling the work of decorating etc. Pity I’m so bloody useless! Hope you won’t overdo things. Please send full details of house & garden. Im [sic] dying for news of it & so keen. When you saw G. Touche, did you receive any impression as to how I stand in his eyes? Was a bit shaken to hear that you took 2 1/2 hours to get from city to house. Is that normal? Very sorry to hear of Frances & your Mother having flu. Hope they both got well quickly & that neither you nor anyone else succumbed. Did Frances enjoy being an invalid when the worst was over? Thanks [underlined] so much [/underlined] for getting another violin & strings sent. You certainly do everything you can for me. If you can possibly repay A.S.T. without crippling yourself financially, I’d like you to do so. Please send Irene my congrats. Please tell me dates of dispatch of all mail from here that you have received & continue to do so until we leave. I shall be able in future to write only once a week & will do so each Sunday so you can keep a check. This is my first this year & I’ll write next on 9th Jan. Four years ago today, my darling, you & I were married. I love you more, if possible, than I did then but to mark the anniversary am powerless to do more than remind you of my love & my longing to be reunited with you, never again to part. I wish you would give me your honest opinion as to when that is likely to occur. I yearn for it always. Have heard from Grunfeld’s Swiss friends that they can only send the Rolex watches if they give Rolex a promise that they are a gift & that no demand will be made upon me after the war for repayment. Naturally they are not inclined to do this The climate here continues to be indescribably awful we get spells of severe weather when everything is solid mingled with periods of the most terribly damp slush which no boots can withstand I’d give a lot for the missing parcel. The low temperature adds another difficulty to my fiddle practice. Please don’t imagine that I’ll ever be able to play. Musically I’m naught but a clod & I suffer acutely from harmonic amnesia (loss of melody). Nevertheless I struggle along, undaunted. Once again my warmest thanks for all you are doing towards [underlined] our [/underlined] home. I appreciate everything & love you so.
John.
