[Underlined] Process Check on Protective Treatments to D.T.D. 902 ”A” “B” & “BE” Shops [/underlined]
[Underlined] Hampden Details [/underlined]
All new details and assemblies are cleaned with turps. substitute. Those repaired or salvaged are also cleaned, only being stripped where necessary. They are then given one coat of S.O.B.A.C. Aluminium P.O.V. to D.T.D. 260 “A”, and are well spaced for drying. Racks are available for the smaller details.
[Underlined] Lancaster Details [/underlined]
Are all cleaned with turps: and given one coat of either Black or Green P.O.V. to D.T.D. 314 according to its position on the aircraft.
[Underlined] Hampden C/S Camouflage. [/underlined]
These are not stripped, but cleaned down with turps: new panels are given a coat of primer (U.P.7.) and the whole sprayed with one coat of “Sea Grey” P.O.V. (D.T.D. 314) on the top surfaces, and one coat of “Black” P.O.V. (D.T.D. 314) on the bottom surfaces. A certain number, which are to be finished white enamel on the underside, are completely stripped and given a coat of Universal Primer (U.P.7.). The finishing coat of white enamel is not now put on at these works. All markings are put on to approved drawings.
[Underlined] Lancaster Components [/underlined]
Are cleaned down with turps and sprayed “Dark Earth” / P.T.O.
[Page break]
camouflage (D.T.D. 314) on upper surfaces, and Matt Black (D.T.D. 314) on the underside. Colour boundaries and markings are all carried out to A.V. Roe’s approved drawings.
[Underlined] Aileron Structures [/underlined]
Are stripped and given a coat of dope resisting paint to B.S.S. 3.X.4. before fabric covering.
[Underlined] Remarks [/underlined]
There appears to be a big contrast between different drums of the Black P.O.V. to D.T.D. 314. Certain drums of this paint, which should have a matt finish, are drying quite glossy. Enquiries are being made to ascertain why this is so. The following Batch No’s were taken from drums of paint in use and traced back to their Release Notes:-
Black P.O.V. to D.T.D. 314. Batch No. 1733. Release Note LR/17467
Alum: P.O.V. to D.T.D. 260 “A”. Batch No 1157. Release Note LR/17057
Dark Earth to D.T.D. 314. Batch No 1078. Release Note LR/16243
Green Camouflage to D.T.D. 308. Batch No 1153. Release Note LR/2305 /B.
A good standard of workmanship is being maintained generaly [sic], and components examined were found to have a good even finish and to be free from flaking.
Process as viewed is considered satisfactory.

[Underlined] Process Check on Cadmium Plating to D.T.D. 904.
“Y” Shed. 26. 8. 42. [/underlined]
[Underlined] Preparation [/underlined]
Parts are effectively cleaned before plating in a Zonax electrical cleaning bath, which is maintained just below boiling point at approx. 180°F, and at a current of 5 volts, in accordance with maker’s instructions.
[Underlined] Electrolyte [/underlined]
Is a Cannings proprietary product and is in a fairly clean condition. A sample is taken approximately once weekly by the W.I.D. for test, and additions made as required.
[Underlined] Plating [/underlined]
Is carried out at room temperature, (bath is not heated). Cathode and anode rails across the bath are in a satisfactorily clean condition. Parts are correctly suspended in bath with copper wire for a period of 20 to 30 mins. Bath is not agitated. Voltage and amperage are correct.
[Underlined] Washing after Plating. [/underlined]
Parts are washed in cold, then hot running water and allowed to dry.
[Underlined] Removal of Brittleness [/underlined]
Parts are tempered in oil at a temperature between 100° and 200°C.
[Underlined] Tests. [/underlined]
Test pieces are put in once per week, the last one dated 25/8/42 /contd.
[Page break]
Contd/
They are subjected to porosity and thickness tests. Thickness on last test piece was 0.0004” and porosity was O.K.
Book records, which are kept of all electrolyte tests and test pieces, were checked and found in order. It was noted that thickness of coat is measured by micrometer and not by weight as in Appendix II of D.T.D. 904.
Process as viewed is considered satisfactory, with the exception of measurement of coating by micrometer instead of by weight.

[underlined] Anodic Oxidation to D.T.D.910”B” & I.I.437 [/underlined] [underlined] 23-5-45 [/underlined]
[underlined] Baths [/underlined]
Two baths are in use in the factory. 1 large, 1 small: Both are in a reasonably clean condition & free from scum. Suspension of parts is by Alum: wire in the small bath and by Alum: strips in the large one. The linings of the baths are used a cathodes. The Electrolyte is kept agitated by means of pumps. The large bath having a pump at either end, but only one is in working order. Even so the fluid is well agitated in all parts. Both baths are gas heated to a temp: of 104°F. [symbol] 4°.
[underlined] Treatment of Parts [/underlined]
All parts are degreased prior to treatment. The Bengough Stuart Chromic Acid process is used, the voltage time cycle being:-
Voltage stepped up from 0 to 40 in 10 mins.
Voltage held for 20 mins.
Voltage raised to 50 in 5 mins & held for 5 mins.
This in accordance with D.T.D.910”B”
After treatment they are washed in cold running water. The hot water washing is dispensed with as an aid to crack detection by inspection staff. ([deleted] W.S.O.110/42 [/deleted][inserted]I.I.M.437 [/inserted])
[underlined] Tests [/underlined]
Parts are allowed to drain for 24hrs after treatment and are then examined under, blue mercury vapour lamps, for cracks and other imperfections. Where the Anodic film looks or feels doubtful the methyl violet test is carried out.
[underlined]Records [/underlined]
Tests of the electrlyte are taken 3 times per week by M.T. Dept. Book records were examined and found satisfactory. The latest entry dated 18-5-45 read as follows:-
Twaddle Temp. Titialtion Value CRO3 content
Large Bath 8.4 102° 3.2 1.6
Small Bath 8.5 102° 4.8 2.4
Spar booms Part Nos 40603/371 were watched through the complete process and were satisfactory in every way.

[underlined]Log item no 1 – 2 & 4 [/underlined] [underlined] Process Report No 52. [/underlined]
[underlined] Quarantine & Bonded Hoses [/underlined]:-
Incoming parts & material have been greatly reduced during the last few months, and most of the work at present being handled by the stores, consists of material and partly fininshed work returned by sub-contractors on completion of orders. All material & parts entering the factory pass through Bonded & Quarantine Stores, where they are checked to advice and release notes, inspected to drawing, are given a batch number and dispersed to their relative part stores about the factory. All information relative to the material or parts is well co-related and can satisfactorily be traced back to the original release note on test report. Any batch of material or parts received without release note is quarantined untill [sic] such times as the relevant paper work is received. Colour identifaction of raw material is satisfactorily carried out to I.I.M.412. The finished part stores are generaly [sic]in a clean and tidy condition. Parts are well stacked or binned, ends of pipes etc, are blanked off and each part carries a part no: batch no and inspection stamp. A spot check taken on valve sleeves Part No. 28503/1743 was satisfactorily traced back to Release Note No 7930 on Messers Homo Ltd, Shrewsbury.[symbol]
[underlined] Despatch Hoses [/underlined]:-
Here also the amount of work has been greatly reduced during the last few months. All parts are re-inspected, well and securly tied up, with a metal backed label attached, bearing all necessary information and an inspection stamp.
Work is carried out systematically and is efficiently controlled & recorded.
Process is considered satisfactory.

[Underlined] Process Check on Electrical Installation to D.T.D. 1029 – I. I.
A. 19. 19.8.42. [/underlined]
[inserted] 1/ [/inserted] [Underlined] Installation of Cables [/underlined] were found to be to specified requirements. A spot check was taken on Hurricane Wing Serial No. LMSD/41H/291409, Continuity tests on landing and navigation lights, and heated pressure head were satisfactorily carried out.
All conduits were satisfactorily flared and where not in tubes, are protected with approved insulating material. Ends of cables satisfactorily served and effectively protected where clipped. Connections at terminals and soldering satisfactory. Diameter of conduits ample for easy replacement. Radii on conduits conform to requirements.
[Underlined] Approved Solder [/underlined] and resin flux used, being issued to “B” Shop stores on cover note from Loco’ bonded stores. The approved solder Grade A supplied by Messrs. Fry’s Metal Foundry, Manchester to B.S.S. 219, to release note No. 3048. Flux used:- “Alchor-re” Soldering Paste (proprietry [sic] brand) from same firm, release note No. 481.
A spot check taken on Hampden Centre Section Serial No. H1/17689. The 2” length of loose cables allowed between clipped end of cable and terminal block adhered to. All Metal Braided cables satisfactorily earthed. De-icing motors (carb) bench tested and tested again in position.
[inserted] 3/ [/inserted][Underlined] Insulation resistance [/underlined]
Megger tests satisfactorily carried out. In no case was megger reading less than two megohms.
[insertered]2/ [/inserted][Underlined] Identification of Cables. [/underlined]
Effectively carried out by colouring of the insulation for core identification and by composition ferrules plainly marked, threaded on the cables for Service identification.
[Underlined] Bonding. [/underlined] is to specified requirements of D.T.D. G.E. 125. All tests proved satisfactory. Lengths of bridging connections, terminal connections on same, bonding across rubber hose connections are satisfactorily carried out. Although it was observed that 3/16/.0048” flexible copper cord is used in place of 4/16/..0048” which is called for, it does not appear to affect Bonding test readings to any noticeable extent.

[Underlined] Process Check on Heat Treatment to Inspection Instructions M. 414 and M. 407, and M. 436. [/underlined]
[Underlined] Y SHED. 24th, August, 1942. [/underlined]
[Underlined] Cleaning Prior to Treatment. [/underlined]
Material is thoroughly cleaned before treatment in a Cannings Zonax Solution bath, which effectively removes all traces of oil etc.
[Underlined] Treatment. [/underlined]
Two salt baths are in general use, the smaller one being used chiefly for rivets. Bath temperatures are maintained within specified limits controlled by “Cambridge” Recording Pyrometers the cold junction of which is checked each morning by W.I.D. The hot junctions are checked each week with a mercury thermometer. Pyrometers were last checked by “Cambridge Instrument Co.” on 14th August, 1942.
[Underlined] Quenching. [/underlined]
Bath is of cold running water in very clean condition, and is situated quite close to either salt bath. Temperature is well below specified maximum, figure of 50°C. Material is washed of all traces of salts in hot water, same being in fairly clean condition.
[Underlined] Tests. [/underlined]
Two control test pieces are put in each morning and two each afternoon, which after age hardening are hardness tested and one specimen per week is subject to a tensile test. Full records of same are kept by W.I.D.
Records. Records of all heat treatment giving part and batch nos. spec., date, times “in” and “out” and pyrometer record charts were examined and found satisfactory.
[Underlined] Heat Treatment of Steel to Inspection Instruction M. 407. [/underlined]
No heat treatment of steel for aircraft parts is being carried out at the moment in “Y” Shed.

Parts are effectively cleaned prior to treatment in a hot solution os [sic] Zonax Cleaner, followed by washing in hot water.
[Underlined] Electrolyte. [/underlined]
Is tested approximately one per week for C.R.O.3 content. Last test report was dated 25/8/42 and free C.R.O.3 content was 2.2. Bath is agitated by menas [sic] of circulation by electric pump. Bath and rails are in good clean condition and parts are correctly suspended from anode rail on aluminium wire.
A batch of parts was watched through entire process and voltage time cycle was to specification requirements. Temperature was maintained at 100°F (37.8°C) by means of steam pipes, which is within required limits. Cathodes are of staybrite stainless steel.
[Underlined] Cleaning after Treatment. [/underlined]
Parts are washed in cold, then hot running water and allowed to dry.
[Underlined] Tests. [/underlined]
The feel of the anodised surface was correct. The film was marked with methyl-violet dye, which when rubbed with a damp cloth did not produce any loss of colour.
Process as viewed is considered satisfactory.

[Underlined] Process Check on Bonded Stores to Inspection Instructions A. 33 and M. 412. “Y” and “YH” Shops. [/underlined]
27/8/42.
[Underlined] Quarantine Stores. [/underlined]
Material entering works is checked to relevant release notes, is inspected and given a batch number. Colour identification to Inspection Instruction M. 412 is satisfactorily carried out.
[Underlined] Raw Material Stores. [/underlined]
An assortment of material batch numbers were tkane [sic] at random and satisfactorily traced to their relevant release notes. Except for isolated cases material is effectively protected from corrosion with oil. It was noted that a large quantity of aluminium alloy sheet to D.T.D. 390 and B.S.S. 5.L.3. is laid flat and not on its edge owing to insufficient number of racks. It was noted also that 12” strip to B.S.S. 5.L.3. which is cut into narrower strips and rolled into “top hat” section in “C” Shop, thereby destroying the colour identification, is not re-identified when returned to Raw Material Stores. With exception of above, colour identification to Inspection Instruction M. 412 is satisfactorily carried out. The “YH” section os [sic] these stores is considered inadequate for the amount of incoming material. Several stacks of material are outside the actual stores.
[Underlined] Finished Part Stores. [/underlined]
A number of different items were selected at will from various bins, each one was found to bear its part number and inspection stamp. In several cases inspection stamps were found to be indiscernible, owing to improper stamping.
[Underlined] Remarks. [/underlined]
There is evidently an improvement in the Quarantine and Raw Material Stores since the last process check dated 8.7.42, but there is still room for further betterment [inserted] / [/inserted] especially in the “YH” Section of the Raw Material Stores.
J. F. Nolan.

[underlined] Process Check on Rivetting [sic] to Inspection Instructions A. 24 and M. 426. “Y” and “YH” Shop.s [/underlined]
[underlined]28th August, 1942.[/underlined]
Rivets entering works are inspected in Quarantine Stores, and placed in their respective bins in the finished part stores, from where they are issued as required for heat treatment.
[underlined] Storage. [/underlined]
After heat treatment they are stores [sic] in Drikold containers at temperatures of 15°C to 20°C for periods up to 5 days, which is well within 150 hour period allowed for storage at this temperature as laid down in Inspection Instructions M. 246. A good recording system is employed, by which there is very little danger of rivets being stored beyond their specified time limited. Temperatures of containers are checked approximately every two or three days and entered in book records once per week by W.I.D. and Drikold containers are refilled every 24 hours.
[underlined] Control. [/underlined]
The approved system of coloured containers used by the firm is being carried out satisfactorily.
[underlined] Workmanship. [/underlined]
Riveting on spars, ribs, mainplane skins, etc. was examined and a high standard of workmanship is being maintained, but it is desired to mention a certain difference in the standard of riveting between day and night shifts on the wing tip section, rivet tails being strong and standing well up on one shift, but excessively flattened on the other shift, which at the time of this report is the night shift. This point is to be brought to the notice of the appropriate inspectors at the earliest opportunity.
Process as viewed is considered satisfactory with the exception of the above mentioned point.

[underlined] Process Check on Protective Treatments to DTD 902A. [/underlined]
[underlined] Y Shed. [/underlined] [underlined] 23rd September, 1942. [/underlined]
[underlined]All Details. [/underlined]
Cleaned with thinners or pure turpentine when available.
Sprayed with one coat of “Sobac” P.O.V., to Spec. DTD. 260A. Returned as sub assemblies after work on benches for a second coat.
Details and sub-assemblies are well spaced in the racks for [deleted] cleaning [/deleted] [/inserted] DRYING [/inserted], before return to stores.
[underlined] Skins. [/underlined]
To scheme DTD. 83A, by which skins are degreased for 3 minutes, and then immersed for 20 minutes at 42°C or 15 minutes at 45°C in a pickling bath composed of 15% Sulphuric Acid, 5% Chromic Acid and 80% water.
They are afterwards washed in cold then boiling water and dried.
Temperature and spec. gravity of pickling bath are checked three times per week. Records of same are not kept, but a sample is taken and a chemist analysis report is obtained every fortnight, the last one was dated 15/9/42.
Skins are then sprayed with one coat of Cellulose primer to DTD. 308. This must be, and is done, within one hour after cleaning.
Bend test specimens are sprayed, dried and bent round a 1” diameter bar without showing signs of cracking or flaking, approx. once per week. All baths are in a very clean condition.
Process as viewed is considered satisfactory

[underlined] Process Check on Splicing to Inspection Instructions A.34 and A.18. Y Shed [/underlined]
[underlined] 22/10/42. [/underlined]
A number of cables picked at random, were inspected and found to have 4 ½ tucks, as required, and the serving was neatly carried out.
All cables are subjected to a proof load equal to 50% of their breaking strain, but method of application is not considered quite satisfactory, as the load is supplied as a momentary snatch, not giving the splice time to stretch and settle. Suggest that load should be held for at least one minute.
Cables 52744C/17 and 52171E/13 were checked to drawing and found correct.
Each cable bore an inspection stamp, Part Number and evidence of proof loading, on a brass tag.
Standards of workmanship is being maintained and process is considered satisfactory with the exception of method of Proof-Loading.

[Inserted] AP.1455 Leof.O. MAT2. [/inserted]
[Underlined] Process check on Segregation of Scrap…B Shop…16. 2. 43. [/underlined]
[Underlined] System. [/underlined]
Is as laid down in Letter of Direction B.137766/40/P.S.10 and consists of clearly marked bins, having a distinctive colour for each group or form of scrap. Same are conveniently placed near benches, machines, etc. so that there is little danger of identification becoming lost.
[Underlined] Condition of Bins. [/underlined]
Three differently coloured bins are necessary in this shop for Aluminium and its Alloys, and are as follows:-
[Underlined] Group 1 [/underlined] (Red) Sheet Cuttings, Tubes and Wire. L.4, T.9, and L.17.
[Underlined] Group 2 [/underlined] (Blue) Sheet Cuttings, Tubes and Wire. L.1, L.3, L.39, T.4, DTD390
[Underlined] Group 4A [/underlined] (Brown) Bar ends, L.40, L.45, and D.T.D.364.
There is also a bin for Copper (Green) and one for Steel (Black).
All bins have recently been repainted and increased in numbers, and are in good clean condition. generally, although a certain amount of foreign matter, e.g. cigarette packets etc. was noticed in the bins. This is regarded as unavoidable. Material in the bins was, as far as could be ascertained without tests, correctly segregated.
[Underlined] Collection. [/underlined]
It is only necessary for collections to be made once or twice weekly, this being done regularly. Scrap is retained in their respective bins during transit to ‘Y’ Shed, where it is dumped into marked bunkers.
[Underlined] Sacking and Labelling. [/underlined]
is carried out at ‘Y’ Shed after which it is stamped by a W.I.D. Inspector and stored under tarpaulins to await collection.
[Underlined] Remarks. [/underlined]
It was noticed that painted and unpainted material is placed in the same bin, this is contrary to the Letter of Direction, but it is considered that there is insufficient material to warrant separate bins for painted and unpainted scrap.
Process as viewed is considered satisfactory.

[Underlined] Process Check on Assemblies and Sub-Assemblies . . . B Shop . . . 18. 2. 43. [/underlined]
Assemblies and Sub-Assemblies in this shop are chiefly items required or salvaged to Approved Schemes. The following were picked at random and examined.
Lancaster 1302443 – Countershaft Cover.
Hampden 52115/H2– Undercarriage Fairing.
Hampden 52112/H3– Rear Cowling.
Hampden 5238B – Tank Door.
They were checked to drawing and schedule, examined for workmanship and defective material, and found correct. All bore a W.I.D. inspection stamp, but the “R” or “S” stamp, signifying repair or salvage was not present on all repaired or salvaged items. This was brought to the notice of inspector concerned who promised to see that they would be so stamped in future.
All repairs were effectively carried out to Approved Schemes, and all details bore evidence of previous inspection.
Salvaged or repaired sub-assemblies are not checked to drawings for dimensions where there has been no serious damage.
All items are cleaned and sprayed internally with P.O.V. where necessary.
Process as viewed is considered satisfactory.

[Underlined] PROCESS CHECK ON PROTECTIVE TREATMENTS TO D.T.D. 902A. 23/3/43.
“B” AND “BE” SHOPS. [/underlined]
[Underlined] Cleaning. [/underlined]
Is satisfactorily carried out on all details, assemblies and components, with turps. substitute.
[Underlined] Drying. [/underlined]
Racks are provided for the smaller parts and all are well spaced for drying.
[Underlined] Components and Markings. [/underlined]
Are all satisfactorily carried out to approved drawings. A certain number of Hampden Centre Sections, which are to be finished white on the underside do not now receive the final coat before despatch, but are sent in Primer only. Aileron structures are stripped and given a coat of dope resisting paint to B.S. Specification 3 X 4 before fabric covering.
[Underlined] Remarks. [/underlined]
There appears to be a big contrast between different drums of the Black P.O.V. to D.T.D.314. Certain drums ofthis [sic] paint, which should have a matt finish, are drying quite glossy. Enquiries are being made to ascertain why this is so. A number of batch numbers were satisfactorily traced back to their respective release notes.
A good standard of workmanship is being maintained generally, and parts examined were found to have a good even finish and to be free from flaking.
Process as viewed is considered satisfactory.

[Underlined] Process Check on Screwed Work to Inspection Instruction A.9. [/underlined]
[Underlined] ‘B’ Shop Group. [/underlined]
[Underlined] 25/3/43. [/underlined]
Very little screwed work is at present being done, as all gauges have been returned to the Coventry Tool Co. for re-grinding and re-adjustment.
Whilst the gauges are away, any small urgent order for screwed work is being taken to other shops for inspection.
Since the previous month’s check, the system of re-screwing salvage bolts has been stopped.
The only screwed work available for checking was:-
3/8” B.S.F. H.T. Steel Bolts for U/C 5284/B11.
The Wickman Caliper gauge was borrowed from H2 Shop, and all were found satisfactory to gauge and drawings.

[underlined] BONDED QUARANTINE STORES TO INSPECTION INSTRUCTION A.33 AND M.412 [/underlined]
[underlined] "B" SHOP GROUP [/underlined] 20/4/43.
[underlined] Stores [/underlined]
Several pipes in finished part stores were found to be unmasked. It was arranged for them to be drawn out of store, cleaned and remasked. With the above exception all stores are in a satisfactory condition.
[underlined] Batching. [/underlined]
Is effectively carried out in Quarantine Stores and satisfactorily carried through to view room.
[underlined] Material Identification [/underlined]
Is well carried out to approved colour scheme as laid down in Inspection InstructionM.412.
[underlined] Remarks. [/underlined]
Enquiries were made at C.C.S. to ascertain why pipes were being delivered to various stores without masking. These revealed that masking tape is almost impossible to obtain, and so C.C.S. have no option but to allow pipes to be delivered unmasked, as they receive them in this condition, from other firms.
It was noticed that there is no store available for Hampden repaired assemblies. After inspection they are simply stacked against one wall of B Shop. This was brought to the notice of the Asst. Chief Inspector, but no action can be taken by him at present, owing to the acute shortage of floor space. The assemblies are to be subjected to a second inspection, immediately prior to assembly, to ensure that no damage has been sustained during storage.

Process Check on Other Protective Treatments to Specification D.T.D. [deleted] 209A. [/deleted] [inserted] 209.A. [/inserted]
B and BE Shops.
24th August, 1943.
[Underlined] Cleaning [/underlined] Is satisfactorily carried out on all details, assemblies, and components with turpentine substitute or thinners.
[Underlined] Drying [/underlined] There are now very few small details passing through the paint shop, and therefore drying racks are not in use.
[Underlined] Components. [/underlined] Markings are well carried out to A.V. Roe’s approved drawings. Aileron structures are stripped and a coat of dope resisting paint to Specification 3X4 is applied prior to fabric covering.
[Underlined] Remarks. [/underlined] A number of batch numbers, taken from paint drums now in use were satisfactorily traced back to their respective release notes. A good standard of workmanship is being maintained generally, and parts examined were found to be free from flaking and to have a good even finish.

[Underlined] B SHOP GROUP. 11/2/44. [/underlined]
There are no changes to report on riveting processes since the last check dated 18/11/43.
Storage records were checked and found to be in order.
The book temperatures of Drikold containers was found to have no entry since 19/12/43. The W.I.D. Senior Inspector agreed to having the check taken regularly every two weeks.
There is a slight improvement in the standard of workmanship, but strict supervision is being maintained by A.I.D. and W.I.D.
Process as viewed is considered satisfactory.

[Underlined] Redundancy. [/underlined]
Sir,
On perusal of the redundancy lists, I find my name included in Group “A” with my seniority dated 9.3.42. I am given to understand that, as I am on [sic] ex-service man of this war, in receipt of a disability pension, and having unbroken Government Service, my seniority should [sic] dated from 3.9.39, i.e. the date of my enlistment in H.M. Forces.
I would be very much obliged if you would have my claim investigated.
